Issue 18 2023 Term 2 Week 8 - 15 Jun 2023

From The Principal

Last Friday we held our Foundation Day Service as part of the celebration of our 139-year history during our Heritage Week. It was wonderful to join together as a community and hear from guest speaker, Emeritus Professor Merilyn Sleigh (Redlander, Class of 1964), reflect on how her Redlands education provided the foundation for her future pursuits.

Below is an excerpt from the speech I gave at this Service which encapsulates why I believe celebrating our history at Redlands is so important to our present.

As I learn more about the history of Redlands, I am further inspired by both our earliest school leaders such as Elizabeth Liggins, Clara Arnold and Gertrude Amy Roseby, who tirelessly led the School through the countless challenges of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and our earliest students, who, like you, our current students, honed their passions and forged their identities while attending Redlands. As graduates, many of these students went on to become pioneers in their various fields, and last year we honoured some of them through the naming of our Redlands Learning Hub floors.

However, history, if it solely remains in the past as historical records, grainy images or plaques on a wall – is merely that. History. What is special about Redlands is that our past informs our present as the culture we so strongly value today has been derived and created from this history.

Over the past few years, I have attended numerous alumni events such as the Platinum Lunch, the Redlander Alumni Awards and the Young Alumni reunions. At these events I have had the opportunity to speak to Redlanders who graduated from one year ago to 70 years ago.

When I ask them what they loved most about their time at Redlands, there is an amazing similarity in their answers. The strong collegial relationships with other students and staff. The many opportunities to find and develop their own passions and interests. The welcoming, inclusive and supportive community which allowed them to truly discover and be themselves.

I hope and believe that if I asked you, our current students of Redlands, this same question, you would give many of these same answers. The names, faces and buildings might change. But the culture – the heart and soul of our School – remains the same.

I know that you, our current students of Redlands, will continue to strengthen this culture today for the future generations of students who will follow in your footsteps tomorrow.

Sports Facilities

As the winter season of sport continues to roll forward, some of you might have noticed recent developments occurring out at the Macquarie University sports grounds. As announced last year, Redlands has entered into a long term investment and lease partnership with Macquarie University so that we will be able to continue to call these grounds home for the next 20 years.

For the first stage of this development, we have partnered with Sydney FC and Macquarie University to upgrade the Northern Oval into two all-weather football fields or one AFL oval. These works are scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.

We have also partnered with Macquarie University, AFL NSW and the NSW Government to upgrade the University Oval fields, as well as the changerooms and surrounding facilities. These works will commence in earnest next year, once the Northern Oval upgrade has been completed.

At the end of last year, there was also some exciting news for our Tennis program. Both our Winter and Summer Tennis programs will be moving to the Mosman Lawn Tennis Club from the start of 2024, as the School signed a 25-year lease for these facilities and will be supporting their upgrade to a professional standard.

We look forward to seeing these upgraded facilities coming online over the next few years for the benefit of our current and future students.

Expanding the High Country Campus

Thank you to those families who already contributed to our Annual Giving program.

This year’s Annual Giving provides an opportunity to support the expansion of the High Country Campus which was originally developed by the School in partnership with the Redlands Parents and Friends Association, It was opened in 1996 with two accommodation buildings and two more buildings have been added since. This was only possible due to generous contributions of Redlands families.

A few months ago, we announced the launch of a new residential Experiential Learning Program commencing in 2025 for our Year 9 students. In order to accommodate the whole of Year 9 split over two terms and the future expansion of our Winter School, we need capacity to house approximately 20 more students and 12 more staff.

Please join us to make this possible. Every gift, large or small, makes a difference! A donation of $2 and more is tax deductible in Australia.

Using Waters Road to Drop Off?

Please role model safe driving practices by adhering to the parking signs and the road rules. Sadly, some of our local residents are reporting that there is an increase of Redlands parents parking illegally and doing u-turns in the street near the traffic lights. We appreciate you working with us to prioritise the safety of all of our students and members of the local community.

Together, Our Job is to Have the Hard Conversations

At School, we often have challenging and important conversations with students and families. We always appreciate the support and understanding of parents and carers with whom we work in the development of the young people in our care. Recently, we have been talking with students about the risks of sending ‘nudes’ and the other broader topic of ‘consent’. Many people do not recognise the broad nature of ’consent’ and its inextricable link to the mobile phone. People tend to conflate ‘consent’ with asking someone before engaging in sexual relations, but consent goes much further than this. Consent is knowing that:

  • We do not take photos or videos of someone without first seeking their permission
  • Even if we have their permission, we then do not post these images or videos to social media, without once again, seeking consent for this also

For a variety of reasons, most of which are related to personal safety and security, young people need us to engage in regular conversations with them about the complex area of consent and the use of the mobile phone to request, send and share images, especially if these are intimate images. or ‘nudes’.

Modelling appropriate actions via our use of the mobile phone is a good first step, but as adults, we need to go further. We must also sit and talk with our young people and do this often! Why? If they see that we are willing to talk about it, they know a) it is important and b) we are open to them approaching us if they find themselves in a tricky situation.

The article below from the esafety commissioner is a must read for all parents and carers of young people. Thank you for engaging with this information and supporting the educators at Redlands.

Sending Nudes and Sexting

esafety commisioner

Young people are often better at managing relationships and protecting themselves online if you give them support and guidance.

It’s important to talk with them about sending nudes and sexting, to help them stay safe.

When young people talk about ‘sending nudes’, it usually means sharing intimate photos or videos of themselves with someone else using an online message or chat function, or a phone text service. ‘Sexting’ means sending a sexual message or text, with or without a photo or video. Sending nudes and sexting are becoming common among young people and adults.

When someone shares (or threatens to share) the intimate image or video without the consent of the person shown in it this is ‘image-based abuse’. The content can be shared with others via text or online. This can be traumatic for the person shown, so it’s important that young people feel comfortable about reaching out for support so they can get the images taken down and find any other help they need.

How to Talk with your Child About Sending Nudes

Research shows that 45% of young people aged 14 to 17 have seen sexual images online. But banning your child from using the internet is not practical – these days it’s important for healthy social interaction. Instead, you can help prepare your child by having open conversations about their online experiences from an early age, before they’re teenagers. That way, they’re more likely to come to you for advice if they see anything that makes them uncomfortable or upset.

It’s also a good idea to talk about consent from an early age. We know that although it’s uncommon, children as young as 9 have shared nude images online – this may be due to not understanding the risks or being pressured by an older child or adult.

Children are more likely to make safe choices when adults have early protective conversations. You can start without mentioning sex or the topic of sending nudes. For example, ask your child for permission to take their photo or to post a photo of them on your social media. Then as they develop, you can talk with them about consent in various online situations.

If your child is already a teenager, talking about consent first is still a good way to start a conversation about sending nudes.

Here are some suggestions for how to have the discussion about sending nudes – you can choose what you think is right for your child and family.

Match your approach to your child’s level of maturity, age, and the type of relationship you share with them. You might take the opportunity for a chat while you’re doing something together, like a long walk or a car trip. Sitting side by side, rather than looking at each other, can help make it less awkward!

Open the conversation with a real-life story from the media or your child’s school or community (or you could use a story from eSafety’s resources). Ask questions like ‘Do you think it was right for them to share that photo after they broke up?’ or ‘Do you think it was right for them to post that video online of their friend having sex?’ Follow up by asking ‘Why?’, ‘Why not?’ or ‘Tell me more’ to help you understand more about what they’re thinking.

Explore what their friends think about sharing nudes. Ask your child what they think might happen if one of their friend’s nudes went viral and how they would get help.

Talk about mutual respect and trust. Explore why these behaviours are important to maintain healthy and respectful relationships. Explain that if someone is pressuring them to send an intimate image, that can be a sign that something isn’t right in the relationship. It doesn’t matter if the person is a friend, crush or someone they just met online.

Let them know that it’s OK to say ‘no’ when someone asks for an intimate image or video or to get sexual online, even if it’s someone they think they can trust. Respecting their bodies and personal values is important.

Help them understand that it’s important to get consent before sharing any type of image or video of someone else. Let your child know that sharing an intimate image or video of someone without their consent is a breach of trust and against the law.

Tell them they can always talk with you, no matter how worried or embarrassed they feel. Let them know that you will help them work things out if they feel pressured to share an intimate image or video of themselves or if they have shared an intimate image or video of someone else.

Let them know about eSafety’s advice for Young People. You could even start the chat by showing your child these pages:

How image-based abuse happens, including ‘revenge porn’, ‘sextortion’ and sexual grooming

Sharing an intimate image or video of a person without their consent is image-based abuse. It’s never OK. If it happens to your child, it’s important they understand that it’s not their fault, even if they shared a nude with the other person in the first place or agreed to get sexual with them in a live chat.

Image-based abuse is sometimes known as ‘revenge porn’ because some people do it to hurt a person who’s ended a relationship with them, or threaten to do it unless they agree to talk. But there are other reasons too – for example, to upset or bully the person, or get them into trouble.

The image or video is often a selfie, or a screenshot or recording of a live video chat. But it can also be a meme, a fake or deepfake edited to look like the person, or even an image of someone else that’s been tagged with their name.

Image-based abuse can also happen when:

  • a scammer hooks or ‘catfishes’ a person into a fake friendship or relationship, then tricks them into sending nudes or getting sexual online and threatens to share the images or videos to blackmail them for money (see sexual extortion, also known as ‘sextortion’)
  • a sexual predator (paedophile) ‘grooms’ a child or young person to trick them into sending nudes or getting sexual online, then threatens to share the images or videos unless the child or young person sends more nudes or gets sexual on camera again.

How image-based abuse can affect your child

  • They may feel humiliation, guilt, shame, anger, violation and self-blame – leading to immediate and ongoing emotional distress, withdrawal from school and family life, and difficulty with establishing and maintaining trusting relationships. In severe cases, this can result in self-harm and suicidal thoughts.
  • They may be bullied, teased and harassed by others if the image or video is shared around their school community or friendship groups.
  • Their intimate image or video may remain online or continue to be shared more widely, adding to their trauma every time it’s seen again.
  • Damage to their reputation may impact their relationships, performance at school or work, ability to socialise and confidence about the future.

How to support your child through image-based abuse

If your child experiences image-based abuse or does it to someone else, it’s important to make sure they’re safe and not about to harm themselves. If they’re at risk of immediate harm, call Triple Zero (000) for help.

Here are some suggestions for further support:

  • Try talking to your doctor if you have concerns about the health and wellbeing of your child. You could ask them for a referral to a specialist adolescent psychologist.
  • Children and young people can access counselling services any day or time at Kids Helpline (for young people up to age 25) and headspace (for 12- to 25-year-olds). Free and confidential legal advice is available from Youth Law Australia (for young people under 25) and local community legal centres can also assist with advice and referrals.
  • It can be difficult to support your child through this experience – you may need help too. You can contact Parentline for information and counselling. You can also find resources about dealing with sexual abuse on the Raising Children Network.

If it Happens to your Child

Stay calm and listen. Finding out that your child’s nude has been shared, or someone is threatening to share it, can be very upsetting – but try to stay calm. If you’re upset or angry, they may not listen to your advice (and it might stop them coming to you about other concerns in the future). Thank them for being brave enough to let you know.

Keep your focus on your child’s wellbeing. It’s important they’re supported by a trusted adult so they can get the help they need.

Help them take action. It’s important to collect evidence and report image-based abuse, so the intimate image or video can be removed or the threats to share it can be stopped. You can do this on behalf of your child if they’re under 16, or help them fill out the online form if they’re older. Follow the steps for collecting evidence, reporting the abuse, preventing further contact and getting more help.

Check how they’re doing. Look out for signs your child may be depressed or anxious. These can include unusual changes in their:

  • mood
  • sleep patterns
  • appetite
  • energy levels
  • willingness to socialise
  • attendance at school or work.

It may also be a good idea to ask their school for support. This could include:

  • looking out for any concerning behaviour directed towards your child, such as shaming or bullying
  • letting you know if the teachers or support staff notice signs of depression or anxiety, such as missing classes or falling asleep because they’re tired.

If you think your child is struggling to cope, help them speak with a doctor, psychologist or counselling or support service.

Find more suggestions about how to help someone deal with image-based abuse.

If your Child does it to Someone Else

Talk about the impact of sharing an image or video without consent. Try to understand what has happened and why, and explore the impact it might be having on the person whose image or video has been shared. Explain to your child that it’s never OK to share an intimate image or video of someone else, because it can harm their mental health and reputation – now and in the future.

Try to stop the image or video being shared. Talk to your child about steps they can take to prevent the spread of the image or video. Encourage them to:

  • delete all intimate images or videos of the person from their phone, hard drive and any other device, as well as from any backups or cloud storage
  • delete the image or video from the site, app, chat or message thread immediately, as well as any comments they or others have made about it
  • ask the people they have shared the intimate image or video with to delete it online and from their devices immediately, along with any comments they made about it, and to get anyone else they have on-shared it with to also delete the image or video and any comments
  • report the image or video to the site, app or service used to share or send it, and ask it to take down any copies that have spread – check The eSafety Guide for links to common platforms and services.

Contact your child’s school and ask them to help stop further distribution. (Be aware that schools have mandatory reporting requirements and depending on the circumstances, may be required to report the matter to relevant authorities or the police).

Help your child to repair harm. If the school or police are involved, be sure to follow their advice.

Encourage your child to do everything they can to repair the harm caused to the person in the image or video. If appropriate, this could include encouraging your child to meet with the affected person, listen to and accept what they have to say, and offer them a genuine apology. You and the family members of the affected person may want to offer support by being there with them when they meet or talk.

Secondary School Athletics Carnival

It was wonderful to see Yr 12 so involved at last Thursday’s Secondary School Athletics Carnival at Sydney Olympic Park. It was a special carnival for Yr 12 as this was their last ever Athletics Carnival. It was so heartwarming to see all of Yr 12 supporting one another at their events and cherishing the connections they have with each other.

Some highlights from the carnival include:

  • Emilie Bessell and Sebastien Griffith both winning the Champion of Champions 100m.
  • Hugo McKay taking out the Senior Boy’s High Jump in a unicorn onesie.
  • The 18 Year Girls, locked arm in arm, racing the 100m wearing an array of superhero outfits including superwoman and spider man.
  • The McDouall Yr 12 Senior Boys Relay Team (Will Pearson, Keian Murphy, Lachlan Binnekamp, Sebastien Griffith)  running 46.1, 0.16 shy of the Senior Boys Relay Record.
  • The Yr 12 Student relay, convincingly taking the win in the Staff Vs Students relay.
  • Sebastian Tang, dressed as Harry Potter, running the 200m with a broom between his legs.
  • Yr 12 running their lap of honor down the straight of the 100m as a cohort, including our School Captain Josie Simpson, who was pushed by Allegra Brown in a wheelchair.

Congratulations to the following Yr 12 students who took out the Age Champion and Runners Up Age Champion:

  • 17 Girls Age Champion and Senior Divisional Age Champion – Emilie Bessell (McDouall)

  • 18 Girls Runners Up Age Champion – Maddie Barwise (Dumolo)

Special mention to our Cowper House Captains, Yasi Coletran and Joe Griffiths who led their House to victory.

Pockets and Blazer drop off

If a Yr 12 student is receiving a pocket for Winter Sport, they will need to bring their blazer in on Friday 23 June (last day of school) and hand their blazers in at a set-up blazer collection in the quad. HSC students will need to drop their blazers off with their pocket at 12:30 and IB students will need to drop their blazer off at the start of lunch, before they head home to prepare for the Yr 12 Formal. Pockets will be distributed to Yr 12 students early next week.

Reflection on Defence of Sydney Monument Service

Oolan Margon and Jack Stevens were honoured to join Ms Sabine Partington at the 2023 Defence of Sydney Service in Wk 6. Both students were exceptional representatives of the Yr 11 cohort and made the most of this opportunity. Please see Jack’s reflection below.

“Last week, I received the privilege of being able to attend the 2023 Defence of Sydney Service commemorating the 81st anniversary of the night that ‘war came to Sydney’ at the Defence of Sydney Monument on North Head, Manly. This was a very touching and emotional event for me, as I learned about the 21 young sailors who were killed that night, following an attack from a Japanese ‘midget-submarine’. The most moving moment of the day for me was listening to a speech from a student from another school, who recounted the events of that fateful night from the first-person perspective of one of the sailors killed in the attack. This speech was ended with the devastating information that this sailor was due to go on leave from the navy the next day. From listening to this speech, as well as others from military personnel, my already exceptionally high respect for our veterans has increased. It is crucial that we pay the upmost respect to our veterans and current armed forces, as many of them have given the biggest sacrifice, and gave their lives to ensure we can live in the world we live in today.”

Jack Stevens – Yr 11

Athletics Carnival

Arnhem Land Reflections

On Tuesday evening, Yr 9 students presented their Arnhem Land Camp experiences to the Redlands community and representatives from Culture College. Via narration, song, dance and movement, the students reflected on the connection and depth of their immersion on country in Arnhem Land. David Abineno recounted his interaction with Indigenous elders, sitting and listening to them, sharing stories and connecting over Galpul making. Lachlan Howes shared the connection he made with the powerful female Yolngu artists, where they so specially shared their craft with him while painting. Other students showcased their whole group ‘Give Back’ performance, crafting the ancient stories of the Macassans and Yolngu relationship, the Midawarr season and connection to country via women’s and men’s business. It was a wonderful display of the students’ new knowledge and experiences, and a chance for parents to share in Redland’s vision for profound Indigenous education and engagement.

Week 8 – Athletics Carnival and the Race to Finish Term 2 – Ready, Set, Go!

‘The Love Song of Redlands and a Racetrack’*

Let us go then, you and I,
When Term 2 is spread out against the sky
Like a student energised on a racetrack;
Let us listen, to Redlands’ heartbeat,
From lessons in seats
To restless nights on home learning tasks
And assessment submission for feedback and marks:
Beats that build to joyous expression
Of unbridled enthusiasm
On track and field, always with a question …
Oh, do not ask, ‘What is it?’
Let us go and Athletics Carnival revisit.

*Adapted from T.S. Eliot’s ‘The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock’

Let us go back to the end of last week. To Thursday 8 June. The calendar event we had all been waiting for – the Athletics Carnival. Time to dust off our joggers, find a bright yellow, red, green or white shirt, and get ready to hit the track (or field) for the Athletics Carnival!

And what a joyous expression of unbridled enthusiasm it all was. This year, students were encouraged to move beyond wearing just their Redlands PE uniform and instead dress in their House colours. From the start, Yr 7 showed their joie de vivre, arriving at school covered in House colours and then using stick on jewels and making zinc patterns across their faces to ensure there was no doubt which House they were proud to be part of! Needlessly to say, there was a lot of important posing across the day!

And then came the races! The forecast had called for rain, but it was all sunshine and smiles (until about 2:30pm…), and this led to some excellent competition. Yr 7 involvement was high with a huge number of students competing in not only the 100m and 200m races, but also the 400m and 800m. The queue for Long Jump was so long, it had to be seen to be believed! Even this Year Advisor got involved and gave the Long Jump a go, before later racing in the Staff versus Student race (unfortunately or perhaps fortunately depending on where you were sitting, the students were the victors).

It was wonderful to see students engaging in events competitively and others getting involved simply for the fun of being part of it all, across the day.

In addition to the wonderful participation, there were some exceptional results. A HUGE congratulations goes to our Yr 7 Age Champions.

12 Boys Champion – Nicholas Gorman

12 Girls Champion – Phoebe Sun

12 Boys Runner Up – Buddy Miller

12 Girls Runner Up – Gabriella Demian

13 Boys Champion – Robbie Smith (Yr 8)

13 Girls Champion – Liv Law

13 Boys Runner Up – Tristan Fournier Le Ray

13 Girls Runner Up – Lauren Rolfe

And, a special congratulations must be extended to Liv Law who not only became the Junior Girls Division Champion but also broke a collection of records on the day.

  • 1500m in 4:56.47 (the previous record was 5:22.24!)
  • 800m in 2:26.04 (the previous record was 2:36.91)
  • 400m in 1:03.25 (the previous record was 1:05.14)

I wonder what records the cohort might break next year?

FUSE Cup

As many know, the school has offered eSports as a cocurricular club this year. As part of the Thursday lunch club, eSports ran the Redlands Cup, a Mario Kart tournament with each of the 25 student members competing. This was used as a practice for the FUSE Cup – a Sydney Region tournament.

The FUSE Cup tournament was held last Thursday at St Luke’s Grammar School with 60 students from local region competing. Redlands took 14 students to form 3 teams of 4 with 2 reserves. The students competed in races and time trials to determine who progressed to the next round. In between races, students were involved in a series of lessons and practical activities including positive gaming culture, physical exercise and digital wellbeing, with the underlying values being integrity, strength, inclusion and teamwork.

Of the 12 students competing, Connor Price finished in 2nd Place – losing the final by a mere single point! The winner, a student from St Luke’s, will now get to compete in the National Final on the Gold Coast in October. Overall, Redlands dominated the tournament with 3 semi-finalists, 2 finalists and 1 second place overall. Congratulations to all the Yr 7 boys who were selected on the team: Henry Richardson, Andrew Budden, Connor Price, William Auty, Henry Campbell, Ari Abe-Apostolou (sick on the day), Lucas Keall, Joshua Freer, Jason Gong, Morgan Besley and Zach McHattan.

Foundation Day Assembly

Following the excitement of the Athletics Carnival and the FUSE Cup, Yr 7 and Yr 11 were invited to attend the School’s Foundation Day assembly, where Redlands celebrated 139 years as a school. Former Redlands student Emeritus Professor Merilyn Sleigh (graduate of 1964) shared with students stories of her time at Redlands and how her education here offered her a pathway to great personal career success.

Thank you to Ina Guan and Grace Walker-Barker who both led the assembly in singing, and Aaron Oh and Liv Law who read out student reflections from past Redlands alumni.

Push for Better Mental Health Challenge comes to Redlands

On Wednesday, the founder of the ‘Push for Better’ Push-Up Challenge, Nick Hudson, visited Redlands to speak in the Years 7-9 Assembly. He explained the history of this charity initiative and praised the School’s positive response and involvement. Redlands are working hard through their push-up targets and appreciative of any support.

A Fun and Relaxing End to the Week

After a busy week and with a bit of lovely sunshine, students Olive Ross-Sampson and Matilda Hugman, and also Nico Thompson, Ben Farrant, Erol Jackson, Zac Purdy and Nic Gorman were showing us all how to make the most of the wonderful surrounds of Redlands, using the time at lunch to relax, recharge and get ready for the last periods of the day.

I also want to applaud Alba Martin-Gomez whose creation of a wonderful, cheery Mushroom fun guy (fungi) has given a lot of smiles to everyone who has seen it. Well done!

Compost Tuesday

Our environmental leaders launched another initiative this week – Compost Tuesday. In assembly, students were provided with information about what they could place in these compost bins and this will start next week.

Y12 Legacy Gift Product Launch

In our Junior School assembly this week, we were delighted to welcome back four Junior School students now in Yr 12: Angus, Oliver, Lachlan and Jamison, to talk to the students about two gifts that they will be selling next term connected to fundraising towards the School’s mean-tested scholarship.

The Yr 12 students showed a Redlands 2023 tote bag and a Redlands sports towel which they will be selling next term and details will be circulated in advance.

Important Student Safety Reminder

Please can parents of students who either catch a bus home or attend an after-school activities remind their child(ren) that students are not permitted to go to the Shell garage at the junction of Murdoch Street and Military Road to purchase food and/or drinks. As this is a very busy petrol station, our guidance comes from a point of student safety and expectations. Students have been given this message as well as we have also had some miss their bus due to this reason.

Emmy and Friends

During Term 2, Kindy and Year 1 students participated in the ‘Learn to Be Safe with Emmy’ program, run by specialist providers, Act for Kids. Each week educators came to school to facilitate conversations around personal safety, early warning signs of danger, personal body space and how to identify and articulate feelings. This invaluable program assists students and teachers understand key aspects of ‘safe’ and ‘unsafe’ situations at a time of growing awareness in a child’s development. Students learn lifelong protective skills using age-appropriate language, developing knowledge and confidence in identifying trusted adults, while teachers are supported with resources to enable the discussion of personal safety.

We Have Grown So Much in Prep!

As this term draws to a close, I look back at the semester and cannot help but be amazed at how far our little learners have come. Each day Prep students come to my office, clutching their work and brimming with pride. What amazes me every time is their development not only in their writing and reading capabilities but their creativity and willingness to try new things and to think ‘outside of the box’. I often look back through their books and marvel at the difference between that hesitant first entry to the piece I am now being shown. To me this is pure joy to witness risk taking where they try, get feedback, try again and then share their learning journey with me and others.

Our Prep student-led assemblies are another example of how our students have made huge strides with confidence to stand up and speak in front of their peers and staff. Each fortnight I watch on with amazement as our students plan and execute such a professional assembly where their message is always articulated so beautifully through role playing or sharing of stories. Another example of such beaming confidence is when I bring tours and visitors into their classrooms. I often will disturb the students and they are always so happy to share what they are learning.

I cannot wait to see what my special visitors will bring at the end of Term 4.

Sustainability in the Prep

A Message from Mrs Kim Chipper, Sustainability Manager

Students in the Prep School are very motivated when it comes to learning about the environment. This term, two Prep students have been named as the first Year 2 Environment Leaders, congratulations to Leelan Haines and Vivienne Cooksley.

Prep School students are currently learning the benefits of composting through using worm farms to collect food scraps from their Crunch and Sip. On top of this, students have a variety of recycling streams available, including a return and earn bin (to collect a recycle eligible containers), battery recycling and coffee cup recycling bins (for any hot chocolates). Once a week an Environment Club is run over lunchtime, where students can learn more about the environment.

Over the past 12 months, students in the Prep School have been involved in a Sustainable School Gardens program with David Harrington, an ethnobotanist. Some of the activities have included habitat audits of the school grounds, exploring what niches exist for biodiversity in our playgrounds and gardens, pollinator counts investigating the different types of essential pollinator species found in the School and an assessment of the soils found in the various gardens and vegetable beds. Hands on learning activities have included nature art from found materials, habitat restoration and construction using logs, rocks and mulch, creating bee hotels from sticks and clay and the communication of scientific data using novel methods.

Lost Property

As the term draws to a close, our pile of named and unnamed pieces of clothing, lunch boxes and drink bottles has grown. A table full of lost property will be placed outside the Prep reception next Thursday and Friday, anything unclaimed will be thrown away.

Staff Changes

At the end of the term, Miss Monckton will be leaving Redlands. Miss Monckton has worked at Redlands House for a few years and has decided it is time to see the world and go travelling with friends. We will miss her dearly and wish her all the best for the future. A replacement for Miss Monckton will be announced shortly.

Miss Caddick’s time at Redlands has also come to an end, as we welcome Miss Sarah Heard back from maternity leave. Miss Heard will join Mrs McDonald on Transition Gold 3 days a week. Mrs Amy Johnson will also join this team 2 days a week. We wish Miss Caddick well, we do hope to see her back at Redlands some time in the future.

Toys at Preschool

We are blessed with beautiful resources at Redlands House, so we encourage the children to please leave toys at home. They can become lost or broken whilst at Preschool. If your child has a special item to share for ‘News’, please leave this with your class teacher in the morning. We have discussed this matter with the children. Secondary Sport

Over the coming months we are going to begin cultivating leadership opportunities for students in sport as a crucial development for their personal development and future success. By providing avenues for students to exercise their leadership skills within the sports context, they can learn valuable lessons and acquire essential qualities that will benefit them beyond the playing field. We have fostered a number of strategies to foster leadership in sports through the following ways (which will continue to evolve):

  1. Leadership Roles: encouraging the selection of team leaders who can serve as role models for their peers. These individuals should exhibit strong leadership qualities and be responsible for motivating and guiding their teammates.
  2. Mentorships: establishing mentorship programs where experienced athletes or coaches can guide younger students. This creates a supportive environment for skill development and helps instill leadership traits through hands-on guidance and feedback.
  3. Team Projects: encouraging students to collaborate on team projects or initiatives that require them to work together and make collective decisions. This cultivates teamwork and allows emerging leaders to develop and showcase their abilities.
  4. Workshops: by running workshops or seminars focused on leadership development. Inviting guest speakers along to share their experiences and insights on effective leadership in the sporting world.
  5. Volunteering & Community Engagement: encourage students to participate in community service projects related to sports. This allows them to take on leadership roles in organising events, coaching younger athletes or advocating for sport-related causes.
  6. Decision Making Opportunities: providing students with opportunities to make decision that impact their team or sports. This could involve determining team strategies or contributing to fundraising efforts.
  7. Recognition & Rewards: by acknowledging and rewarding students who demonstrate exceptional leadership skills, we motivate others to aspire to leadership roles.

By implementing these strategies we can foster leadership opportunities for students in sport, equipping them with valuable skills, confidence and a sense of responsibility that will benefit them both in their athletic pursuits but also any future endeavours.

‘The most valuable of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do, when it has to be done, whether you like it or not.’

Bus Transport

As a school we pride ourselves on the way in which our students participate and train in their chosen fields, providing opportunities for all students to participate in a range of activities is something that we will continue to do. Providing transport to those activities is something that we do as a school, this is a reminder that when travelling on Redlands transport the Redlands school rules are in place and students should be always upholding the values of the school:

  • Have good behaviour, safe behaviour and appropriate language at all times.
  • Follow the driver (and supervising staff) instructions at all times.
  • Obey the transport rules and regulations at all times (seat belts must be worn at all times).
  • Leave the bus how they found it (no rubbish, no mess).

Students who fail the meet the standards of the above will face school disciplinary action.

Yr 8 Drama Performance Evenings 2023

The Yr 8 performance night Australian Landscapes is taking place in the Drama Studio on Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 of August (Week 4, Term 3) at 6:30pm. This term, students have explored the work of Australian writers and performers who have contributed to Australian drama and theatre. Students have engaged in a range of dramatic forms, performance styles and theatre conventions related to Australian theatre and developed a broad understanding of our cultural heritage and the characteristics of the Australian psyche. This is their first ever performance night examination, and we are very proud of the newly learnt performance skills they have developed and demonstrated. Come and watch our Year 8 Drama students perform extracts from fantastic plays such as Lockie Leonard, Hating Alison Ashley and Burnt, just to name a few. We look forward to seeing you there in the audience!

Senior Vocal Competition Results

We congratulate all performers in last Friday’s Senior Vocal Competition held in the Edwards Auditorium! The delightful Chloe Zuel was warm and generous in her encouragement of our aspiring young singers, and shared valuable industry insights with many who reached out to her for connection. Gratitude also extended once again to our Resident Associate Artist, Dr Jeremy Eskenazi who accompanied performers on the evening, with additional thanks owed as always to our wonderful Senior Administrator Ms Kirsty Hales and our Head of Performance Senior, Ms Arienne Brodie for their work in support of the event.

Well done to all performers for the extraordinary performances on display. We congratulate the Division Winners & Runners Up for their splendid achievement, and make special mention of Aneke Golowenko (Yr 10) who was awarded the overall trophy for this year’s Competition.
