Issue 18 2022 Term 2 Week 8 - 16 Jun 2022

From The Principal

A huge thank you to all parents and carers who supported the ‘Light for Lismore’ Service initiative, which was student led and community driven. The RPFA provided incredible support and our students responded with donations of goods and heartfelt cards with messages of support. Secondary School Service Coordinator, Ms Riley, generously travelled to Lismore in a van last weekend to deliver the donations and was devastated to see the significant challenges that people are still having to confront. The situation may no longer be front page news; however, for people on the ground in Lismore, the challenge of rebuilding their town and their lives remains a daily reality.

The standard of the performances at the Vocal Competition last Friday evening was outstanding, which was reflected in the comments and encouragement provided by ARIA award winning guest judge, Meg Mac. There is significant courage involved in standing before an audience and singly solo, especially for the younger students in Year 7. The Senior Music Festival this Friday evening promises to be another memorable night of entertainment.

Student leaders have focused their messages on encouraging participation and taking a risk with trying new events, leading up to the recent Swimming Carnivals and the Secondary School Athletics Carnival next week. The Junior and Secondary Swimming Carnivals were a great opportunity for students to represent and support their Houses. There was a positive atmosphere at both events with a large number of students actively involved and colourfully dressed. Congratulations to Cowper and Dumolo Houses on winning the Junior and Secondary events respectively.

Community Update

It was a genuine pleasure to attend the Preparatory School Parent Contact Group Meeting this week. I was delighted to discuss the many exciting projects and initiatives that the School has planned and was grateful for the passionate and constructive community feedback shared. All of our Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) continue to keep our community connected, included and supported within the many and varied aspects of school life. For more information on the wide range of community events and activities that are taking place through the remainder of this term and beyond please visit the RPFA section.

We are excited to be welcoming more of our community groups onto our School grounds as the year unfolds. Tomorrow we welcome prospective parents and carers on our Senior Campus as we host our first Open Morning in a number of years. This event provides an opportunity for families considering a Redlands education to hear from our students and School leadership. At the end of last week, we welcomed back to campus alumni cohorts from 2010, 2011 and 2016.

Our alumni of Redlanders can be found locally and globally. We continue to ensure the important connections with our community are nurtured and developed through Redlands dedicated alumni engagement program that includes interstate and international reunions and networking opportunities. We value greatly the relationships we build and maintain with our alumni and we are excited by the opportunities and initiatives they help support in preparing our current students for life beyond the school gates. For more information on our recent alumni reunion along with how you can support our Annual Appeal program, please visit our Foundation section.

A reminder to save the date – Spring Fair is back and will take place on Saturday, 3 September. We will share further details on this much loved Redlands community event early next Term.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Foundation

Last week we all celebrated Redlands 138th birthday. As part of the events, the traditional Foundation Day Service was hosted at Redlands Hall and attended by many members of our wider community including members of the Foundation Advisory Committee, Redlanders Alumni Association, RPFA and other important members such as Dr Sue Morey AM, Redlander 1959.

It was wonderful to see our young leaders, School captains Sophia Maxwell and Jack Murray engaging with our guests and reflecting on our long and rich history.

Protecting our precious heritage: Liggins Restoration Appeal

As part of this year’s Appeal we are seeking support towards restorations of the Liggins building. The proposed restoration will help preserve its historic façade, restore the roof and brickwork, refurbish the interior and provide an exceptional learning environment for our students.

The Liggins Building, originally known as Liggins House, opened on 9 May 1923 in honour of Redlands’ co-founder Elizabeth Liggins. First a boarding house, then kitchen, art room, laboratory, pottery workshop and during WWII, it even housed the School’s bomb shelter. Today, it comprises much loved Language classrooms and the Staff Common Room. Throughout its history, our community has generously supported some of its upgrades, including the 2007 Science Block/Liggins Atrium Project enjoyed by students today.

Your support of the Liggins Restoration Appeal will help revive this treasured icon for generations of Redlanders to enjoy.

If you wish to secure a recognition plaque for your donation they are available in three sizes ($10,000, $5,000 or $1,000). Please contact me directly.

DONATE NOW

Every gift to the Redlands Building Fund of $2 or more is tax deductible within Australia.

Back on Campus

It was an exciting night at Redlands last Friday as members of the Classes of 2010, 2011 and 2016 were welcomed back to Redlands Hall to connect and share stories. The atmosphere was electric with the opportunity to speak with past teachers, explore the Redlands Learning Hub, as well as a tour the Liggins Building, which generated some fantastic memories.

Enormous thanks to Jeff Brown (Redlander 2016), Peta Blundell (2010), and Rory Pryor (2011) for their tremendous effort in organising this special event.

We look forward to holding more Reunions later this year and reconnect with our past students.

Community Gathering

This term has seen a consistent focus on gathering the Secondary School community. In all, we have held ten assemblies with individual cohorts and mixed year groups. In the past week, we have held a Yr 7-9 Assembly followed by a Yr 10-12 Assembly. Students have gathered informally in the gym on most of these occasions and been led by Yr 12 Student Leaders. Next week on the final day of Term 2, we will hold two formal end of term assemblies for junior and senior students, where a number of awards will be bestowed on students.

This week I gave thanks to the students for their strong desire to build connections and community. In each of the assemblies held this term, a range of students acting as speakers, performers, film-makers, comedians and even game-show hosts, have contributed to building community and supporting the students to re-engage with each other after the long pandemic period where traditional connections were not always possible.

Our Student Leader Team, ably led by Sophia Maxwell and Jack Murray, spent their time finding cheesy ways to make their fellow students laugh, revitalised the Redlands Rhino (now appearing at every event possible) and genuinely connect through persuasive calls to action. As adults we know that standing up in front of a large audience isn’t easy, but our Yr 12 leaders and prefects have demonstrated strong leadership in their pursuits this term. They have demonstrated courage and vulnerability. This week I remarked to Yr 10, 11 and 12 how impressive this was – at Redlands we don’t do things because they are easy. A characteristic I continue to observe and admire in Redlands students is their intention to keep challenging themselves, to keep taking risks and to keep putting themselves out there.

We know from the recent Swimming Carnival that the old adage ‘you get what you give’ continues to ring true. Those willing to give to their community receive something back from it – a sense of inclusion, belonging, or perhaps something more tangible. In the assembly this week, I thanked all of those students who not only attended the Swimming Carnival last Thursday, but did so in good spirit. Swimming Carnivals are not for elite swimmers – they are an opportunity to try something, to take a punt on yourself, to stretch yourself, to enter a competition, knowing (most of the time) that you are not the strongest person on the blocks and may even come last in the race. Although cliched, it’s not about winning or losing, but having a go, and this is a characteristic that goes to the core of being part of the Redlands community and to the core of being Australian. Some people think it is an outdated Australian characteristic. I don’t think so. I like to think we live in a society of people who strive, who take part, who get involved – not a society of cynics or disparagers – but a society who choose to be positive and hopeful. For me working in education means we actively work against cynicism, hopelessness, reductionism, in a society where far too often these sentiments and attitudes are accepted as the norm.

I also saw this commitment and pursuit of hope on Friday evening at the Senior Vocal competition which was another opportunity for Redlands students to have a go, sound their voice, face their fears and sing in front of a supportive and admiring audience. Yes, most of the audience were parents, but also friends, peers, teachers, the Principal and external musicians, who had come to judge the fine musical talent at Redlands. I was so impressed with the quality of the performances, and also with the confident and courageous attitude these students displayed in standing up and performing in a competitive environment. In admiration too, I observed a Yr 11 student, who was an audience member, sit in the front row, cheer on her friends, and almost leap out of her seat in excitement and pride for their talent and courage. She wasn’t performing herself, but she was there supporting and encouraging her friends and peers on a Friday night and it was really special to witness this shared enjoyment. She gave and she received. What she received was the joyful experience provided by an evening of musical talent, and I imagine deepened friendships, but also the subconscious reinforcement that having a go, taking a chance and being supportive is what makes a powerful community.

I asked Yr 10, 11 and 12 at the assembly this week if they were coming to the Senior Music Festival on Friday night. I challenged the students to share in the joy of this event with their peers. The same attitude applies to the Athletics Carnival, being held on Tuesday next week. Being a strong runner is not the point. It’s about having a go, spending time with friends in your House, and experiencing school beyond the classroom setting. I remain hopeful that in the final week of Term 2 our students will benefit from engaging and participating in the many opportunities on offer.

Senior Music Festival

If you are interested in coming along tomorrow evening, to the 2022 Senior Music Festival at The Concourse, Chatswood, we have over 150 students performing an eclectic range of music on the theme Greatest of All Time. Experience Beethoven to Bohemian Rhapsody in what promises to be a wonderful showcase of our students’ talent and hard work, and a testament to the dedicated team of music tutors and teachers who support the co-curricular Music program. Tickets are still available via The Concourse Box Office or Ticketek.

Motivated by Waste

Last Friday a Waste Audit was held on the Senior Campus. The students involved were all very motivated and keen to complete the task as part of our mission to be more sustainable. Many were shocked at the amount of rubbish not put in the correct bins and the sheer volume of food waste. A brief outline of what was uncovered in the audit is below!

Student and Community Spirit – Senior Athletics Carnival

This week our Heads of House and Student House Captains met with their Houses, ahead of next week’s Athletics Carnival. Lots of fun and spirit was generated and students were provided with key messages about next Tuesday, such as:

DressAll students should dress in their House colours. At a minimum, students should wear an appropriate top in their House colour.

Attendance and Participation – students are expected to be participating in all the track and field events available to them, and when not competing, sitting with their House in the appropriate area and actively supporting the other students in their House.

The behaviour and conduct expected of students at school will be expected of students at SOPAC, including their travel to and from the carnival on school buses. In order to support students to demonstrate their best selves, the following boundaries will be in place on Tuesday:

  • Students will not be permitted to sit looking at their phones or laptops – these will be confiscated after the first warning.
  • Students are encouraged to bring their own food and drink and will only be able to purchase limited food from the canteen at SOPAC.
  • Students will not be allowed to wander around SOPAC – they will be reminded only once to return to their House and support their House peers, before being issued with a Friday afternoon detention.
  • Inappropriate, risky or persistent poor behaviour will not be tolerated. Students engaging in this kind of behaviour will be collected from SOPAC by their parents, following a phone call from the Year Advisor.

Tuesday 21 June – the finer details for parents

On Tuesday all students need to be at school by 7.00am so they can board buses on time from various designated points on the Senior and Junior Campuses. Buses will not wait for late students. The carnival runs until approximately 2.15pm and we aim to be back on the Senior Campus by 3.20pm. Typically, most students return to school on the bus at the end of the carnival. This is encouraged.

Students may return home with parents at the conclusion of the carnival but will not be permitted to leave before the carnival concludes. Parents wishing to collect their children from SOPAC, or return home with their children as they are spectators, must provide written permission to the Year Advisor by midday on Monday. As the day is about House Spirit and community, we do not anticipate requests to leave the carnival early as the students are expected to remain for the entire day to support their peers, as part of a contributing community.

Further information about the Athletics Carnival is contained in the letter published earlier this week. All students are expected to attend the Carnival, unless they are unwell. If unwell, parents should email ssabsence@redlands.nsw.edu.au on the day of the Carnival and supply a relevant medical certificate.

Senior Swimming Carnival Results

Well done to all the Yr 11 students who attended and participated in the Senior Swimming Carnival last Thursday at the Sydney International Aquatic Centre. It was great to see so many of the cohort embrace House spirit and support one another throughout the day. It was also pleasing to see many of our Year 11 students jump in the pool and compete in multiple events. The carnival gave a good insight as to which students were keen to become future House Captains in 2023.

Congratulations to the following students who received Age Champion and Runners Up Champion

  • U17 Boys Age Champion: Sam Chubb & Simone Francesci (shared)
  • U17 Runners Up Champion: Loch Wilding

Senior Athletics Carnival

Next Tuesday, the Senior Athletics Carnival is taking place at Sydney Olympic Park. Yr 11 will need to meet in the Liggins quad at 7am to get there names marked off. It would be wonderful to see lots of participation by Yr 11 and attendance on the day. For students running for leadership positions early next term, this is a great opportunity to see Year 11 fully involved in a fun, full-school community event.

Friday Arvo Athletics Training

Friday arvo Athletics Training takes place every Friday afternoon at Balmoral Oval from 3:30-5pm. The training sessions run by Mosman Athletics Club, are open to all levels of ability and give students the opportunity to focus on the fundamentals of running which can be used for other sports and it is also a great mindfulness activity that allows students to switch off from their studies after a big week and socially connect with each other. Sprints, Middle Distance, Jumps and Throws are on offer to students who attend the training. Training will continue until the end of term and throughout all of Term 3. With the Athletics Carnival coming up next Tuesday, this is a good opportunity to learn or refine new skills for any of the Athletics events. If your child is interested in training, please email Mr. Cam Ellis (cellis@redlands.nsw.edu.au).

Upcoming Yr 10 Events

Tuesday 21 June Athletics Carnival

Friday 24 June Last Day of Term 2

Thursday 3 November Vaccination Catch-Ups

Athletics Carnival

Next Tuesday, students are to be present for the day and arrive on the Junior School Oval no later than 7:00am for attendance. Busses depart at 7:15am.  Students are asked the following:

  • Be present and participate throughout the day
  • Wear their Sport uniform or House colours for spirit
  • Bring clothing to layer as the temperature may fluctuate throughout the day and we will be outside

Man Cave Reflections

This week, half of our cohort participated in the Man Cave presented by 6 very different, dynamic and unique youth workers and counsellors who have devoted their lives to helping shape young people’s future. Goals of the day included:

  • learning how gender stereotypes impact their attitudes and behaviour
  • Meeting diverse male and non-binary facilitators
  • Learning to constructively express their thoughts and feelings
  • Connecting to their values and strengths
  • Leaving with tools and resources to support their personal wellbeing
  • Defining values-based visions for the people they want to become

Students took away two strategies in particular: the check-in and the shout-out. Both were incredibly powerful tools used yesterday to support students in being vulnerable with one another, expressing any concerns or celebrations on their minds and recognising and highlighting strengths in one another. The importance of honesty, trust and inclusivity were themes throughout the day, as well as the need to get to know one another before judging one another. An overwhelming number of students asked for more opportunities like this one and are seeking further opportunities for connection.

The positive engagement and open-mindedness was extremely impressive and yet again, the incredible young people we are privileged to work with each day gave us an enormous amount of energy as we were able to watch them connect, grow and broaden their own perspectives throughout the day.

Subject Selection Wrap-Up

Thank you for your support from home and for your communication throughout this subject selection process. Students have now completed their last step, submitting their HSC or IB class preference selections this week. For any student still feeling unsettled with their decision or this process, we ask them to reach out to their Year Advisor for a follow-up conversation.

Students were asked to step up this term and they did just that. Their maturity throughout the many information sessions and individual meetings with Deans and Heads of Department was exceptional and the feedback from all staff has been overwhelming positive.  As a cohort we have been discussing impressions recently and Yr 10 are owning their impressions and how they want to set themselves up for senior years.

Homelessness Awareness and Donation Collection for Wayside Chapel

Donations for the Wayside Chapel and St Vinne’s Emergency Housing continue to be collected this week.

How Can You Help?

Friday Afternoon Athletics Training

Friday Afternoon Athletics Training takes place every Friday afternoon at Balmoral Oval from 3:30–5pm. The training sessions are run by Mosman Athletics Club, and are open to all levels of ability. These sessions give students the opportunity to focus on the fundamentals of running which can be used for other sports; it’s also a great mindfulness activity that allows students to switch off from their studies after a big week and socially connect with each other. Sprints, Middle Distance, Jumps and Throws are on offer to students who attend the training. Training will continue until the end of Term 2, and throughout all of Term 3. With the Athletics Carnival coming up next Tuesday, this is a good opportunity to learn or refine new skills for any of the Athletics events. If your child is interested in training, please email Mr Cam Ellis: cellis@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Swimming Carnival

What a day we had at the annual Junior School Swimming Carnival! Albeit in Winter, the tropical indoor climate and warm water made it feel like our usual summer date for this annual event which had to be postponed from Term 1.

It was inspiring and invigorating to see the students engage with and enjoy the carnival so much and it was impossible not to feel the tangible House spirit in the stands and on the pool deck, aided and abetted by the music playlist which seemed to be perfectly pitched for students, staff and parents!

I extend my sincere gratitude to all of the Junior School staff and coaches involved in every aspect of the day for their combined collegial spirit and effort to support an event of this magnitude to run as smoothly and as efficiently as it did, even finishing an hour ahead of schedule.

Of course, on behalf of the students too, my sincere thanks are extended to our Sports team led by Mr Dunne, who led the very detailed pre-carnival preparation and oversaw the day’s events. As Deputy Principal, Mr Corcoran commented to me, the sign of a great carnival is seeing the stands devoid of students as they immerse themselves fully in the day and on this measure, the carnival was an unmitigated success.

Well done to all of the students involved and particular congratulations to Cowper House who won the overall trophy again. Further information can be found in the Junior Sport section of Note Day.

Light for Lismore Support

We are extremely grateful for, and proud of, the efforts of our school community in the support of the recent charity project to support the flood-affected Lismore region of NSW.

Last Sunday, Ms Rachel Riley, Redlands Service Coordinator, personally drove to Lismore to deliver the array of generous arts and craft donations, handmade storage boxes and cards of support written by our Redlands students to the CEO of the Northern Rivers Children’s Services (NRCS), Jane Isenhood.

Jane was deeply moved by the boxes and the beautiful caring messages from our students and was overwhelmed by the School’s generosity and the sheer volume of donations that came from Redlands families. These donations will support over 2000 children throughout the region for months to come.

Thank you again to our many parent volunteers, families, Ms McKenzie, staff and students who made the ‘Light for Lismore’ project a reality. As Ms. Riley described, she was not prepared for how devastated the town was and continues to be after the floods. The recovery will take over a year and lives will be impacted for the foreseeable future.

From the Junior Campus Wellbeing Team

Can feeling bad help students to feel good?

We came across Professor Tracy Dennis-Tiwary’s article, The Anxiety Paradox and wanted to share some suggestions with you on how to help your children work through their anxiety in a way that develops resilience.

She claims that a parent’s natural impulse is to intervene and try to alleviate the fear, but that this isn’t always the wisest course of action. While anxiety-removal tactics may temporarily soothe children, this can stifle their ability to develop resilience. Professor Tracy Dennis-Tiwary suggests that you help your child to work through their anxieties.

For example:

  • If your child is having a problem at school, gently guide them on how to handle the situation the next day at school. Is it possible for them to discuss their concerns with a teacher; or to express their feelings to a friend; or can they talk to a school counsellor about coping strategies? Help them to find a way to work through the anxiety.
  • Allow them to sit with their fears and help them in coping rather than trying to “fix” the issue for them. Parents are asked to listen and advise, but not to intervene right away. See if they can handle the situation and praise them on their efforts in a very specific way. This can reinforce positive and helpful behaviours.

Children can learn to master their anxieties in this way, which is essential for feeling good and developing resilience.

FINAL CALL Code Camp – Holiday Camp 12-14 July (Yrs 2-6)

Light for Lismore

A message from Kelly Constable, facilitator of Light for Lismore:

‘Last Sunday, Rachel Riley, Redlands Head of Service, delivered your generous arts and craft donations, handmade storage boxes, and cards of support written by our Redlands students to the CEO of the Northern Rivers Children’s Services (NRCS) in Lismore. In response, Jane Isenhood cried when she saw the boxes and the beautiful caring messages from our students. She was overwhelmed by your generosity and the volume of donations that came from our Redlands families. These donations will support over 2000 children throughout the affected flood region for the months to come. We are grateful to the volunteers, the families, teachers, and administrators that made ‘Light for Lismore’ a reality for our neighbours in this devastated community. As Ms Riley described, she was not prepared for how devastated the town was and continues to be after the floods. The recovery will take over a year and lives will be impacted for the foreseeable future. We look forward to creating more opportunities for our students to learn about compassion and the impact of kindness and sharing with those in need.’

Kindness and compassion, two incredibly important characteristics to have! I am so very proud of our Prep students in how they responded with these qualities in bucket loads for our Lismore friends. As we talked together over the last few weeks, they realised that this tragedy had happened in area of the state that some of them enjoy sunny holidays, it brought it very close to home and they saw a connection that made everything so real. Thank you so very much to all the parents who generously gave to the donation boxes and for those RPFA members who put the boxes together for the drive north. Our students are experiencing ways to learn and think about the greater community and how they can contribute to it. We look forward to showing kindness again to our friends in Lismore again soon.

Term 3 Wellbeing Lunchtime Activities

At times the playground can be a daunting place for little people or there may be times when a child just wants to play quietly or do an activity with a few others at lunch time. Our Dean of Students, Mrs Clinton and I have been putting our heads together to work on ways we can provide opportunities for additional play and friendship time beyond the playground for our K-2 at lunchtime. The former afternoon Clubs program provided a springboard for us to use to achieve this. We have taken the essence of Clubs and increased the experiences but instead of an afternoon registration process, we have been able to use similar activities during lunch breaks where more students can access them on a flexible basis depending on their mood and need of the day. The two activities that will be capped at numbers will be the Tech Tuesday and the Chess Club due to resourcing and staffing. More information around the registering process will be shared with students and parents next week. Please be aware students may miss out on these two activities but both Mrs Anagnostu and Madam Merlot will do their best to accommodate the year 2 students in their last semester of Prep.

The choice of activities has been based this term on what our students have been wanting plus some activities that have already been in place.

The timetable below outlines all the activities available for our prep students not only at lunchtime but in their afternoon registered activities. This is shared with you to know what is happening across Prep and for you to highlight these activities with your child.

Please note that these are not compulsory activities, and it will be up the child on the day if they wish to go to the activity. There is certainly no expectation that they come every week either. Expectations around behaviour and the respect of property in teacher’s classrooms will be discussed at our Week 9 Assembly.

Illness

With the recent cold weather we have seen an increase in cases of cold and flu, we encourage you to please keep your child(ren) at home if they are unwell. This prevents the spread of infection amongst the children and staff, it assists us to keep our Redlands House community safe.  Please continue to RAT test children if they have any cold and flu symptoms, we need to remain vigilant in the area.

Toys at Preschool

We are blessed with beautiful resources at Redlands House, so we encourage the children to please leave toys at home. They can become lost or broken whilst at Preschool. If your child has a special item to share for ‘News’, please leave this with your class teacher in the morning. We have discussed this matter with the children. We thank you for your support with this.

Redlands – Pink Sock Charity Sport Round

On Saturday 23 July Redlands we will be hosting a Pink Sock Round in support of the Breast Cancer Network Australia. This year we encourage All students across the Secondary School to purchase pink socks from the Uniform Shop for $15.00 in support of this charity. All parents, coaches are also encouraged to wear a Pink item on the day.

On this day we have arranged for a large number of our winter sports teams to play at our home venue, Macquarie University. Further information will be sent out prior to the end of term.

Winter Sport

Netball

A reminder that there have been some changes to the Netball schedule for this weekend, Redlands Rhino has the most up-to-date fixtures including times. Players need to arrive at their playing venue 30minutes prior to their start times. Please ensure you look up where you are playing and allow for Saturday morning traffic.

Waterpolo

The Senior Waterpolo competition came to an end on Friday night with the Boys teams going down to top of the table Balgowlah Boys. This season, the Boys have been very impressive building each game. Despite some one-sided score lines, the Boys continued to work hard for each other and really improved throughout the season. The Girls finished their season with an internal match against each other, a great way to send out the long standing Yr 12 Waterpolo girls Evie Farrell, Amber Williams, Ruby Kelly and 2022 Waterpolo Captain Willow Stefanovic. Unfortunately, the Girls just missed out on featuring in this year’s finals series.

Football

This Saturday 18 June our Football teams will be competing in Round 7 of the ISA competition. A reminder to check the Redlands Rhino (available on Redlands Pulse) for the most up to date fixtures for this weekend, which will be our last round of ISA Sport before the holiday break. Students will not have training on Tuesday 21 June due to the Redlands Athletics Carnival, all teams will have training on Thursday 23 June as per the normal Football training schedule. Wishing all teams the best of luck heading into Round 7.

Hockey

We have our last round of Hockey for the term this Saturday 18 June. With both of our teams playing at our home field out of Barker College, we encourage students to arrive early or stay after their games to support their Hockey peers!

Due to the Redlands Athletics Carnival there will be no training on Tuesday 21 June, training will resume on Thursday 23 June as the last session before we break for the school holidays.

Don’t forget to save the date for the End of Season Hockey Celebration! The celebration will take place on Thursday 25 August, further details will be provided to the Hockey community shortly.

Earlier this week Jessica Van Extel travelled to Newcastle to compete in the NSWCIS team in the 16&U NSW All Schools Hockey Championships. Congratulations to Jess on a fantastic tournament!

Cross Country & Athletics Training

We will continue to offer Athletics training on Friday afternoons throughout Term 2 to interested students. These sessions are open to all students and will not only prepare students for the Athletics Carnival but will also assist students participating in the 2022 Representative Winter Sports Season.

When:                          Friday Afternoons

Time:                           3.30pm-5.00pm

Venue:                         Balmoral Oval

Snowsports

Please see the Snowsports page for all the most up to date information regarding the 2022 Snowsports season.

Tennis

We hope everyone has had a good long weekend break and are looking forward to the last weekend of competition matches and Development Squad training for the term! We encourage students to give it their all this Saturday so Term 3 will start off strong! Please note there will be no training on Tuesday 21 June due to the Secondary School Athletics Carnival, training will resume on Thursday 23 June as the last session before we break for the school holidays.

A reminder for Round 7 (18 June) this weekend:

  • Please submit your team roster to the Google form before Wednesday 12pm
  • If you are unable to attend Saturday’s competition, please email Caitlin Wong by no later than 12pm on Friday. Attendance is mandatory otherwise and particularly important for ISA players as this competition has very strict guidelines.
  • Please check the draw and playing pairs list to see when/where/who you are playing.
  • Students need to arrive at the venue at least 15 minutes before start time.
  • For any questions, please email Caitlin Wong.

Wishing all players good luck for the last round of competition!

Rugby

With the long weekend now over and our season reaching its mid-point, our focus as a program must shift to our upcoming matches against Blue Mountains Grammar. Despite only being able to field two teams, with our Under 13s and Under 16s having matches, BMGS must not be taken lightly. The rivalry with BMGS is filled with matches that have been highly physical, with both teams taking it to each other both defensively and in attack. For our Under 13s and our Under 16s, gaining control of the match from the outset will be crucial, with the teams’ Captains and Vice Captains being tasked with making sure each of their teams are switched on during warm ups.

Rugby is a fantastic environment for leadership development and the standards that have been set by our previous Rugby Captains has been exemplary. Past Captains such as James Renwick and Cameron Pascoe, our 2018 and 2019 Captains respectively, delivered both on and off the field, setting benchmarks in their efforts at training or through matches whilst also being active in and around our Junior Programs. Our 2022 Rugby Captain, Hugh Sellar, had the opportunity to run out last week onto Campbell Field, leading our 1st XV out for the first time. His individual efforts in that match and his words to the opposition in the post-match are a wonderful reminder to our future leaders of what is to be expected at that level.

In coming years we will see new leaders step up. For next year, our 2023 Captain has the opportunity to lead one of the most skilled and talented 1st XV Squads for the past five years, drawing level with Renwick’s mighty Grand Final side of 2018. In that Year 12 cohort are a number of boys who have all had the opportunity to lead the Age-Group sides. Seeing players such as William Pearson, Josh Hicks, Samuel Chubb and Jack Forrest all develop as leaders within that squad is one of the most rewarding aspects of my role and I could not be more excited to see how much further these young men and other players within the squad can push themselves, each offering a different style of leadership and commitment to the program.

There is a wonderful quote that I believe sums up leadership within the Redlands Rugby Program. Ex-Ireland Scrumhalf Peter Stringer was once asked to speak to his Club side Leinstar before a crucial match. His quote.

‘Something or someone, motivates everyone in this room. Find that one thing that inspires you to perform and gets the best out of you.’

Fitness Centre

The Fitness Centre is the perfect space to develop speed, fundamental movements and also power. All students can access the morning sessions which run Monday – Friday and start promptly at 6:30am. Averaging over 20 students per session, the Fitness Centre is a wonderful place to start your day, working out alongside your classmates and other age-groups.

Students are reminded to bring with them the following.

General Sport Information

Wet Weather

If training is cancelled due to wet weather, a notification will be posted on the Redlands Sport Twitter page (@RedlandsSport) in addition, an email will be sent out to both students and parents. This includes morning & afternoon training along with weekend fixtures.

Thursday afternoon sport – wet weather arrangements (Yr 8-12)
In order to limit student mixing indoors, Students in Year 8-12 who are dismissed at the end of Period 5 are required to go directly home. Sport coaches and Redlands staff will supervise their COVID-safe departure.

Thursday afternoon sport – wet weather arrangements (Yr 7)
In the event that year 7 sport is cancelled on Thursday afternoon, students will remain at school until 3.20pm and participate in sport based activities.

Fixtures

A friendly reminder that the weekly Fixtures (The Redlands Rhino) can be found on the Secondary School Sport page on Redlands Pulse from Wednesday each week. Please ensure you check this on Friday each week to ensure you have the most up to date fixture information.

Uniform

The Redlands sports uniform should be worn to all trainings and matches (students are not permitted to wear any non-Redlands branded clothing). In the event of inclement weather students should wear their Redlands fleece or sports tracksuit.

Game time and arrival times

Students should arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of their scheduled fixture on Saturday (unless directed otherwise). Please ensure you know where you are playing and the likelihood of traffic on Saturday mornings to allow adequate time.

Attendance at Sport

Can we please draw your attention to the following communication process regarding absence from sport:

  1. Parents are required to send an email to the appropriate Sports administrator prior to missing any training session asking for them to be excused
  2. Any student unable to attend a Saturday fixture due to illness, is required to submit a Medical Certificate to their Sports administrator by the Monday morning following the missed fixture
  3. Injured students are required to attend all training sessions and Saturday fixtures
  4. Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards & result in school disciplinary action

Please note that the first unexplained absence will result in a lunchtime detention with further unexplained absences escalating to a Friday afternoon Detention. Please refer to the Student Planner 2022 for full details on requirements for participating in a Representative Sport.

Junior School Swimming Carnival

Our annual Junior School Swimming carnival, postponed from Term 1 took place at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Wednesday. In the second of our big 3 carnivals there was much excitement leading up to the first race, our youngest swimmers being the Under 8 and Under 9 25m and 50m Freestyle event. It was very exciting to see these students participate in their first Junior School Carnival.

Knowing the carnivals can be long for spectators, children and adults in the stands were kept entertained by some dancing competitions with various playlists. It was great to see our war cry competitions make a return at this carnival having being unable to host it last year due to COVID singing restrictions.

With the continuation of the entrant number system this year we can track the participation rate of all houses as well as being able to provide feedback to students across their age groups in the strokes they entered.

The class relays in the 25m pool, organised by the teachers and in some cases the students themselves proved to be a hit with some fierce rivalry between the classes. Thank you to the parents and families who attended who travelled out Homebush to support the carnival as well as our House Captains and Sport Captains, for whom this was their first carnival as leaders at an all-day event.

Congratulations to Cowper House who won the House cup. Congratulations to Cowper House Captains Josh Svensson and Georgia Grace who led their team to victory and got to raise the cup in victory for 2022.

Age Champions Swimming 2022

Drama and Theatre

Last week I was able to sit in on the mini-auditions for the Yr 5 and 6 Junior Music Theatre class. All the students were fantastic and it reminded me of the strength and power of Theatre and Drama education.

Theatre and Drama education offers a Utopia pedagogy that allows participants to see the current clearly and at the same time start to imagine a new version of reality, or at least begin to recognise that change is possible. It is an experience we should all have and implore anyone to join up to the many programs and offerings Redlands has available.

Gala Arts

Students are busily preparing and rehearsing for Gala Arts which will be on Friday 22 July. Tickets are now available via the Concourse website. Click the link below to buy tickets now.

Submissions for the Gala Arts Photography are still open. All the information is below and can be found on iLearn. Please email drama@redlands.nsw.edu to be added to the page for the submission.

Extra-subject Drama and Theatre

Classes are going well. If you want to enrol your child please contact drama@redlands.nsw.edu.au. Some classes are at capacity and have a waitlist.

A few reminders below:

The Extra Subject Drama and Theatre Program automatically renews at the end of Semester 1. Parents do not need to contact the Drama office unless they wish to change their enrolment. Billing takes place prior to the commencement of Semester 2. Four weeks’ written notice to drama@redlands.nsw.edu.au is required if you wish to withdraw from the program.

Please communicate with your child about their extra-curricular classes in the morning. We have had cases where students are in the car line or their designated pick-up spot and have needed to be located before class starts. Please ensure any absences are sent to drama@redlands.nsw.edu or your child’s class tutor prior to the lesson.

Senior Advanced Ensemble Auditions

Even if not successful this time, going through the audition process is an incredibly valuable experience for students, and provides an opportunity for feedback.

Students will find all audition requirements on the ‘Music Department Auditions’ iLearn page. Applications close Friday 24th June.

Junior Music Festival 2022 – SCHOOL OF ROCK!

As we approach the end of Term 2 students and teachers are in full swing with JMF rehearsals. Featuring every student in the Junior School, expect to be singing along to your favourite rock and roll hits as our curriculum and cocurriculum ensembles perform their hearts out. This is a great time to remind students of the ‘team’ nature of being in an ensemble, and the importance of timely and focused rehearsal attendance. It has been particularly impressive to see our Junior students bringing pencils to rehearsals to write in any special conductor messages on their music!

Further JMF  information, including ticket sales, to be distributed next term. Watch this space!

Junior Campus Choral Celebration

Singing is at the core of what we do in music at Redlands. The old adage ‘if you can sing it, you can play it’ certainly rings true in our curriculum offerings and students in the choral stream of our cocurricular ensembles are building on core learning experiences to produce a lovely choral sound. Our 2022 Choral Celebration is just that – a celebration of all things singing on the Junior Campus. Whilst it is not an event with a parent audience, students in TG to Year 6 will enjoy performing for their peers and teachers, and students have even prepared a combined item Sesere Eeye, which you might hear at home this week! Thanks must go to our Head of Choral Mrs Nicole Roberts and our wider Junior Music department for preparing this event.
