Issue 18 2021 - 10 Jun 2021

From the Principal

One aspect of leadership that I thoroughly enjoy is the opportunity to develop exceptional teams of staff across the School. Many of you would be aware of Jim Collins’ seminal work in studying the traits of organisations that enabled them to move from being ‘Good’ to ‘Great’. One key characteristic was the ability to get the ‘right people in the right seats on the bus’. People who share the values of the organisation and who powerfully believe in its vision and mission.

It is for this reason that I am very pleased that we have appointed Mary-Lou O’Brien to an Executive role as the Director of Digital Innovation, from the start of Term 3. Mary-Lou is currently Director of a Digital Transformation Consultancy, following her role as the Chief Digital Officer at Melbourne Girls Grammar. She also held the position of Director of e-Learning at MGG and was Deputy Director of the Centre for Educational Enterprise.

Prior to working in Secondary Education, Mary-Lou was the Commercial Development Officer, Lecturer and Post Grad Course Convenor in the School of Business at Swinburne University. She has a Master of Business (eBusiness and Communication) from Swinburne University, is very highly respected as a leader in Digital Innovation and Strategic Planning and was a finalist in the 2018 CIO of the year award, as well as being selected on the 2018 Educators Hot List.

Mary-Lou will bring a wealth of leadership experience, passion, drive and energy to the School and is excited to be joining Redlands as we embark on implementing our new Strategic Plan.

One of the Strategic Drivers in the soon to be released plan is focused on the Culture of Innovation in the School and the implementation of an Entrepreneurial and Innovative Thinking Program across the Senior and Junior Campuses. We look forward to partnering with the broader community as we develop this program over time. Futurist Tony Seba describes society moving from the extractive age to the creative age and we are all aware of the impact that digital technology and AI will have on future careers. Whilst not all Redlands students will be entrepreneurs in the future, they will all benefit from developing their creative thinking, innovative thinking and problem-solving skills.

On Wednesday this week a large group of Year 8 students had the opportunity to take part in a Futurepreneurs Masterclass program and our Year 5 and 6 students will all be taking part in the Kidspreneur program prior to the end of term, with both programs run by Entropolis.

It was wonderful to celebrate the School’s rich history last week through our Foundation Day service on Friday, with guest speaker Tess Haubrich (2007 Arts Captain) powerfully conveying the positive impact Redlands had on her development and future career path as an actor. Whilst the list of her films and the actors she had worked with was impressive, it was amusing to see the ‘in awe’ reaction of the students when Chris Hemsworth was mentioned by the Deputy Principal. My thanks also to the group of Year 8 students  who developed a memorable Heritage Week Assembly in partnership with Archivist Marguerite Gillezeau, which was presented to Junior and Secondary School students.

Community Update

It was lovely to experience the coming together of students, staff, alumni, our Board and special guests in celebration of Heritage Week. As a community, we value the relationships we have with each other. Our students past and present, families, staff and members of local and global communities are valued and included through a shared connection with Redlands. Foundation Day provided us with the unique opportunity to share and connect our past with the present and future of the School.

Save the Date – we are delighted to announce that the School will be hosting a Community Day on Saturday, 4 September. Community Day will take a different format to that of our traditional Spring Fair due to the ongoing and unforeseen challenges of COVID-19.  We will share further details of this Redlands community event early next term.

As we continue to develop further engagement opportunities on campus we are also looking to enhance your connection with the School through a review of the various communication channels available. Whilst the Redlands App has been a welcome addition to the School’s communication channels we recognise that there is still some work to do in streamlining and simplifying the access and usability of information.

As these initiatives and improvements are being developed, I encourage a continued connection to the significant and diverse experience of our class and year group parents, the RPFA and Friends of Groups that support our many and varied community activities and events.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Legacy Gift, Class of 2021 – Students are leading the way and the Tradition Continues

We are very proud of the Yr 12 Legacy Gift team, who have made fantastic contributions to our community while raising funds towards the Belinda Oxley Scholarship and an environmental initiative at Redlands.

Yr 7 Movie Night

Last Friday night, this team hosted the Yr 7 Movie Night, welcoming our youngest Secondary School students to enjoy a night of popcorn and pizza in pyjamas whilst watching Ratatouille on the big screen!  This was very happy and successful event, displaying leadership, teamwork and generosity of spirit towards our younger students and the overarching Legacy Gift fundraising project.

Thank you to Yr 12 Year Advisors, Ms Matthews and Dr Regis, for supervising throughout the evening and donating most of their Friday night!

Spirit Fair

On Tuesday afternoon the Secondary School came alive with fun and frivolity, as the Spirit Fair was celebrated with gusto, hosted by the Yr 12 Leadership Team. The purpose of this event was to provide the opportunity to develop House spirit in a friendly and inclusive environment, whilst raising proceeds towards the Legacy Gift initiative.

Students enjoyed a variety of activities, including basketball and dodgeball competitions, Just Dance competitions, Lip Sync Battle, chess competitions, a movie screening, sausage sizzle and carnival stalls.

Congratulations to the Legacy Gift team and the Class of 2021, it was a great effort and thank you to the entire Redlands Secondary School student community.

Heritage Week and Foundation Day Service 2021

Heritage Week culminated in Foundation Day Service last Friday including Redlander Guest Speaker, actor Tess Haubrich (Class of 2007 Arts Captain), who fondly remembered her School’s lovely sense of community and individuality. It was a pleasure to welcome Tess back to Redlands and hear about her journey since she graduated. Tess encouraged students to always remember to take the road less travelled, to let your light shine and let it shine brightly.

A perfect way to celebrate 137 years of Creative Arts at Redlands!

Embracing Opportunities

We’ve witnessed some clear examples of students stepping up this week and embracing opportunities. At Redlands there are many opportunities for students. These range across curricular, cocurricular, sport and service. On many occasions, the students themselves provide the impetus for these opportunities, actively initiating them by themselves, and for themselves. This proactive mindset and way of being is striking and exemplary.

The week started with a group of Yr 9 students presenting to the Secondary School teaching staff about sexism. Anhu Guan, Olivia Salmond, Emma Sullivan, Charlotte Waterland and Annie Zhang confidently delivered a well-crafted presentation to the teachers where they surfaced some complex issues related to casual sexism and its impact. Many of their insights emerged from a survey they undertook in Yr 8, but others too have emerged from shared experiences in modern society. These students were articulate, calm and resolute in their messaging. It takes confidence and courage to stand up and address people in public, and the Yr 9 students embraced this opportunity and were in turn, embraced by the teachers, who asked genuine and interested questions, in response to the students’ presentation. I want to congratulate these students for requesting this opportunity to be heard, and for sharing their experiences and perspectives with us.

The Yr 12-led House Spirit Fair which was held on Tuesday afternoon was a wonderful culmination of creativity and collaboration. Earlier this year, the Yr 12 Student Leaders and Prefects expressed their desire for an opportunity to engender House Spirit and a sense of fun during a busy term, and prior to the Athletics Carnival. Yr 12 deserve praise for their effective collaboration on a range of events to inspire Secondary School students. What was very apparent on this cold wintry afternoon was that the Fair enabled a fairly tired student body to take a break from study and sport and to relax in each other’s company, engaging in fun activities, and building community. The Fair gave younger students the opportunity to engage in activities with others in their House and with whom, they might not necessarily spend time. I particularly enjoyed watching the lip sync battles, Yr 12 dancing in the quad and the 3×3 basketball.

Sabrina Blasco and Hannah Mitchell offered a wonderful presentation during the Yr 10 Year Assembly this week about the impact of homelessness on the LGBTQ+ community. What struck me about their presentation was their mission to leverage their privilege for the good of others. Embracing yet another opportunity, they delivered an inspiring and insightful presentation to their peers, challenging them to consider their role in supporting others and making a difference to the broader community. Both students are commended for their efforts and their courage in surfacing these important messages for our community.

Yr 8 Futurepreneurs

Today I was privileged to attend the Pitch session of our Yr 8 Futurepreneurs Masterclass held at Canva HQ in Surry Hills. Mr Bentley, Head of Teaching and Learning, and Mr Corcoran, Deputy Principal, attended with me and we were impressed with the creativity and passion of our students. Ms Vale and Ms Jansons accompanied 40 Yr 8 students to Canva HQ where they worked on bringing their entrepreneurial ideas to life, culminating in presentations to Canva employees and invited parents. Ten groups presented on a range of business ideas from companies that support the management of mental health, people living with Autism Spectrum Disorder, the slow fashion industry, sustainability and people who need guidance with public speaking. The students were articulate, passionate, socially minded and inventive.

Many of them anticipated building companies underpinned by social entrepreneurship and in a non-profit space, connecting their business venture to their own personal values and desire to see positive change in the world. From Ms Vale and Ms Jansons, I hear the day was fairly fast and furious, but when Mr Bentley, Mr Corcoran and I arrived, you could not tell – the presentations were slick and professional (a big thanks to Ms Vale and Ms Jansons for their wonderful support of the students and their expert readying of them to this point). What we saw were future leaders – start-up pioneers, social change agents and inventors. The Canva employees who joined us at the end of the day provided insightful and supportive feedback to all students and affirmed their skills and developing ideas. One asked the students to continue to meet, and to sustain an exploration of these ideas. Another said, ‘Sign me up – I am ready to invest!’ As English teachers, Mr Bentley, Mr Corcoran and I, were most impressed with the students speaking skills – they way they used the space and visual resources to convey their ideas and the cohesion they demonstrated between speakers, was exemplary. I am not sure now what these 40 students are going to do in Yr 9 Commerce. We may need an extension class! And I am certain if invited, they would embrace that opportunity too.

Sydney Jewish Museum Field Trip

Yr 9 were fortunate to attend the Sydney Jewish Museum last Thursday. This was a challenging and moving experience as they browsed the museum guided by people who knew Holocaust survivors and the survivors’ families. Their knowledge and passion enriched the displays enormously. The learning curve was steep as students learnt of strange named places from Central Europe, the difference between a ghetto, labour camp or death camp and the unfolding of history leading up to the holocaust. Included below was a photo taken by River Stefanovic which, in his words, “summarises the Jewish children’s lives lost during the Holocaust.” This is taken in the Children’s Memorial with names and photos of children who perished in the camps. Such loss of loved ones, life and potential brings home the reality of the darkness of this time.

Students also listened to a survivor talk about their experience and answer questions. These dedicated people are very old and these are the last years for students to hear such stories and meet people who actually experienced the creeping danger and reality of the hate and genocide.

Finally at the museum, students engaged in a workshop around the causes of the Holocaust.

Over all it was an overwhelming, interesting and valuable day for them all. The workshop sessions in the afternoon enabled our students to process the learning and emotions of the day, as per the photos below. As students reflect on such issues, they also have seen the value of listening to older generations speaking about their experiences, challenges and lessons of life.

What I am encouraged by is the students’ deep questions that they were reflecting upon: Who was to blame? How were people capable of such cruelty? When should we not trust our media and cultural messages? Why is there such evil in human hearts? How did the survivors process their experience? What was God doing? Is forgiveness possible? Why do genocides still happen? Is faith possible or inevitable in the face of such crimes?

Interestingly, survivors have different answers to the final question. Many speak about their faith as sustaining, providing hope and comfort. Others emerge with no faith having turned away from God. This is often the way: similar experiences can result in quite opposite responses. It is often in the valleys of life that we reach out to God and find that the voice of Jesus brings comfort and perspective, helping us to trust him in the hard times. I know in my personal dark times my understanding of God and his perspective on the world has given me the framework to make sense of that darkness. My relationship with Jesus has been the foundation by which I could forgive and move on. It is the hope of eternity that helped me look to a brighter future. It is the biblical framework that enables me to critique past and present culture and guards against arrogance. May I invite you to contact Fiona or me if this is something you would like to explore more.

I strongly recommend that if you have not been to the Sydney Jewish Museum it is well worth a visit. Every year I learn something new and am challenged anew.

God bless

House Spirit Day

Tuesday saw a new event on the Redlands calendar – the House Spirit Fair. This was organised by Yr 12 students and involved a range of activities, both indoors and outdoors, to help develop House spirit before the annual Athletics Carnival next week. Many students participated in activities such as guessing which teacher was each baby photo, watching a movie, playing dodge ball and competing in chess. As the afternoon was run in House groups, it provided an opportunity for peer support relationships to strengthen across the year groups, in particular with many Yr 11 students knowing Yr 7s in their role as Peer Support leaders this year.

Athletics Carnival

Next Thursday 17 June is the annual Redlands Athletics Carnival, which is a compulsory event for the whole school to attend. Please can parents ensure they have granted permission on Redlands Pulse as soon as possible. The event is on the penultimate day of Semester 1 and is a great opportunity for Yr 11 students to relax and have fun after working so hard over the past two terms. We appreciate your support in ensuring your child attends this compulsory event, and build life-long memorable moments when looking back on their final two years of school.

A big thank you to all our Yr 12 students and House Captains for running such a high-energy, fun and positive afternoon to promote the school community. It was also pleasing to see Yr 10 mingling with so many students from other Year Groups too.

Ignite Reflection

In the past few weeks, the Yr 10 Ignite team have been exploring the extremely confrontational statistics of homelessness in youth, and with Pride month emerging, how those amongst the LGBTQ+ community have been affected. This began with an in-depth discussion surrounding our everyday privilege, and how we might be able to “leverage our privilege for good”.

We recognise that as students who are incredibly privileged, be that through our education, support networks, unrestricted, daily access to sufficient warmth, comfort, shelter, clean water and nutritious food or even opportunities to speak out about matters of concern, we can make use of our voices, influence, wealth and resources to help benefit the rest of the community, especially those who are poor and marginalised. Though we are the beneficiaries of privilege, we can also be the self-proclaimed advocates for those who don’t have it.

We also found that often, we get lost in our little bubble of the lower North Shore, oblivious to just how privileged we are, the hardships of others, and even the negative effects of our actions, only truly considering the things that have a direct effect on us. After this much-needed realisation, we were able to establish a number of ideas that we thought could assist in utilising our privilege for good, and additionally, raise awareness on an often shirked issue: You could support organisations like the Smith Family, LGBT.org or Mission Australia, you could conduct research and share it with others, you could explore the impact of role models who have already begun to make a positive change, join in on service projects or engage in immersive experiences such as the Yr 10 ‘sleeping rough’ initiative that will take place next term.
Combatting inequality and privilege should not mean combatting peoples’ conscience. Nonetheless, providing our community with a greater sense of awareness surrounding the struggles of those who lack ordinary privilege and are victims of social injustice has the potential to reactivate our wonderful capacity to empathise and develop genuine thinkers and genuine carers with a spirit of generosity, gratitude and mindfulness.

Claudia Lalich, Lucy Horton and Sarah Kumpulainen.

Heritage Week

‘Along with some of my classmates, I had the privilege of presenting about Heritage Week to the Yr 7 and 8s last Thursday. We spoke about the history of the creative arts at Redlands, dating all the way back to the founding of the school in 1884. We learnt so much about our School’s history when preparing the presentation, which was very interesting. There were so many great photos from the archives we were able to use. Much has changed since the days when the main dance styles were folk and ballroom. The audience was great, genuinely interested and taking in as much information as they could. So many people take part in at least one of the creative arts, and I hope they all learnt something new about the history and timeline of their passions. I certainly did! It was a valuable experience for everyone, and I hope this initiative will be continued in the years to come so more students can hear about the fascinating history of Redlands’.

Participation in the competition provides our students with excellent examination practice and an opportunity to see how they fare in competition with students of their own age from across the country. Students who are interested in Science can use the test to assess areas of strength and weakness. Success at the test is a way of demonstrating aptitude when applying for Science related opportunities in and out of school.

Entry for students in Years 7-10 is voluntary. Please complete the form here Registration for ICAS before Monday 9 August if you would like your child to take part. A fee of $16 will be charged to your account if you wish your child to participate.

Mother’s Day Coffee Club – Take 2!

After the disappointment of the late cancellation of our Mother’s Day Breakfast earlier this term, we are very pleased to share that we will host a Mother’s Day Celebration now on the last morning of this term, next Friday 18 June.

As part of our COVID plan, it is necessary for all attendees to book via the link on the flyer and we look forward to celebrating this morning with our community.

IPSHA Teacher Librarians Meeting

Last week, we were delighted to welcome teacher librarians from across NSW independent schools; many in person but as is now a new norm, many from across regional schools via a live link.

Held in our wonderful Junior School Arnold Library, a space I often feel is the heart of the Junior School, the afternoon allowed for engaging teacher presentations on research in the profession as well as rich discussion on children’s literature. Visitors also enjoyed the opportunity to visit the Lucy Hill Library in the Prep School, another inspiring learning space in our School which is renowned in school circles as one of the best dedicated library spaces for this age group.

Thank you to Mrs Wiebe for her organisation of the afternoon and her role on the wider IPSHA Librarians committee.

International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) 2021

For over 30 years, International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS), have taken place in schools throughout Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, the Pacific region and South Africa. ICAS is an initiative of Educational Assessment Australia (EAA), a not for profit organisation owned by the University of New South Wales (UNSW).

At Redlands, it is optional for Junior School students to sit these tests in Term 3. Assessments occur during class time within a supervised area of the Junior School. No particular preparation is required and all students receive a certificate and an individual student report indicating which questions they answered correctly, their total score as well as their average compared with the rest of the students in the State.

A more detailed letter and registration details can be found here on Redlands Pulse and any questions should be directed to the Dean of Administration, Ms Atkins.

Yr 6 Kidpreneur Training Day

Next Thursday, we are looking forward to our Yr 6 students enjoying an immersive day program in entrepreneurship to amplify their creativity and start developing problem solving, teamwork, design thinking and pitching skills.

This was originally planned for last year but had to be postponed and the session will be run by Entropolis, who have been involved in setting up whole school entrepreneurial programs in schools, and we have already organised a similar day for Yr 5 at the start of Term 3 as a new initiative.

Semester One Reports

Student reports for Semester One are currently being finalised by teachers and I look forward to reviewing them too. For new families, in particular, these reports will be uploaded to Redlands Pulse for your private access during the first week of the holidays.

Back copies of your son or daughter’s reports are also available via Redlands Pulse. To access the reports, parents will need their Redlands Pulse user name and password. Parents requiring assistance re user name or password should email pulse@redlands.nsw.edu.au as soon as possible.

Do take some time over the break to read through it with your child and acknowledge and celebrate areas of growth and progress. As students return for Term 3, their class teachers will also spend time with your child looking at aspects of goal setting for the second semester, which they will then share with you at the Student-Led Conferences in Week 4 of next term.

Shell Coles Petrol Station

We have been alerted to the highly dangerous practice of a couple of Redlands students being dropped off or picked up by parents at the Shell Coles petrol station at the junction of Murdoch St and Military Rd

Junior School students have regularly been reminded that they are not permitted to go to the station after school or in between the end of the day and any after school activities, particularly Ballet and Dance. Please reinforce this message to your child if this is something that you are aware of.

Reminder: Tuesday Clubs

Please be reminder that the Tuesday Semester One clubs have finished this term and do not take place in the last week of term. This includes Debating and Chess (Friday).

Parent Helper Information Session

I am looking forward to having a conversation with our parents who have emailed their interest to be parent helpers in Prep next term. On Wednesday 16 June at 8.30am-9.15am, please join me as we talk through expectations and also go through some of the learning experiences that you will be part of in our classrooms. Thank you to those parents who have already emailed their interest.

Year 1 Unit of Inquiry: Story Telling

Our Year 1 students have been participating in a Story Telling Unit of Inquiry. Here are some of their artworks – we have some budding artists in our midst!

Yr 2 Unit of Inquiry: Connecting with our Expert Parents

Connecting with experts when we are inquiring into a topic is a rich and authentic way for our students to make connections in their learning and to understand the relevance of what they are learning. Below is a snapshot of what Yr 2 students experienced this week:

On Wednesday, Mr Fournier le Ray came to talk to us about his company. He told us about apps and the process of making them. He also told us how technology has come through from the past to the present. He inspired us to design our own apps. He talked to us about making app updates with a video about IAG safety apps. He gave us example app that tested at home Covid symptoms. He told us about how technology might improve through the present to the future.

Thank you for having the time to talk to us.

Madeline Hogue and Lydia MacJohn.

End of Term and Start of Term Dates

Please be aware that there will be no Wednesday Clubs next week but our Prep After School Sport program will be still operating.

The last day of term is Friday 18 June. Term 3 will commence on Tuesday 13 July and full winter uniform will be worn.

Mother’s Day Activities

We would love to welcome all Mother’s and special friends to Redlands House on Friday 18 June, from 9am to 9.30am, for a rescheduled Mother’s Day morning. The children would love you to join them in their classrooms for some special activities and experiences.

Yr 6 Buddies

This year, Orange Class Seniors have enjoyed a wonderful collaboration with their buddy class 6 Green. The relationships the children are developing fosters trust and enables them to learn mutual responsibility and build a sense of agency to the wider Redlands community. This term, Orange Class were presented with some amazing books made for them by their individual buddies. The stories were unique and the illustrations detailed. The Yr 6 students had clearly spent a great deal of time and effort making these books, and Orange Class were extremely excited to receive them. Our class thoroughly enjoy this collaboration, and they value their friendship with their buddies greatly.

Junior Girls

The Junior Girls played a physical side in Canada Bay on Sunday. It was great to see them continue to compete and attempt to get to the ball first all day. The girls put in a very tough effort and should be proud of their intensity and positive attitude throughout the game.

Inter Girls

The Inter Girls played a highly skilled side in St Ives on Sunday. The girls showed a lot of improvement in their movement of the ball out of the backline and up towards the forward line. The forward and backline high-press structure was also executed precisely throughout the day. It was also great to see the girls match St Ives’ tackling intensity and pressure around the contest.

Junior Boys

The Junior A team came out with an impressive first quarter keeping Knox scoreless. From then it was a race to keep the lead. The boys had an impressive outing and dominated over an impressive Knox side with a solid win.

Junior B Boys

The Junior B team had a strong start but let the scoreboard run up against them in the second quarter. It is the toughest competition they have faced so far but they came away from the game with areas to improve and rather than dropping their heads. There were multiple lessons which will see them match up again when they play next later this season.

Intermediate Boys

The Intermediate Boys played top of the table Shore on Saturday. Having played them previously, the boys knew it would be a physical and fast paced clash. Our boys were able to bring desired pressure early by trailing only by a single goal. The boys were able maintain this intensity for the second term before letting the scoreboard get away from them later in the game. The boys greatly improved from last time they played Shore and it was evident that their skills and match sense have developed in that time. With matches done for the term, we are hopeful that these skills will continue to grow and may be able to match it with Shore when games recommence in Term 3.

Cross Country

On Saturday 5 June, we had 2 students compete for their Athletics NSW Club at the NSW Cross Country Relay Championships. Congratulations to Amber Kusano (Yr 7) whose team placed 4th in the U14 Girls 4 x 2km relay and Emma Mahon (Yr 12) whose team placed 1st in a strong Open Women’s 4 x 4km relay.

Football

Round 6 was the last round of Saturday Football for the term and with most teams at home it was an exciting round.

The 1st XI Girls played against Blue Mountains on Saturday, with a comfortable 7-1 win. The team has been ravaged with injuries lately, however managed to work together to produce a fantastic result. Player of the match was Madi Barwise for her countless breakaway runs down the wing, resulting in a goal and two assists. Special mention to Arkie Riches from the Junior A side who scored her first goal for the 1st XI this week. The Inter A Girls won with a convincing 11-0 against Chevalier. The team worked hard to create space to play in the midfield, creating numerous opportunities to get the ball forward. In the second half a change in formation to three at the back, opened out the wingers and provided more chances up front. The team was very pleased with their effort, creating goals from both long-range shots and passes across the face of goal. Overall, it was a fantastic game for the Winter School players to end on. The Junior A Girls also had a great 7-1 win against BMGS. With a number of goal scorers – Arkie scored 3, Caitlin scored 3 and Zoe scored 1. It was a great team game with some impressive passages of play, the team will continue to work on their defence in the coming weeks. As the goalkeeper was injured, four volunteers rotated in the goalkeeper position and all did a fantastic job. The Junior B Girls played against Barker this week, they played some great team Football and managed to string together some great combination plays, resulting in a 3-0 win over the Barker side to finish out the term.

The 1st Boys were up against second of the table, St Pius in what was going to be a challenging game. Great execution in the first half saw Redlands with a 2-0 lead and the team showed some great improvement with forward passing combinations which complemented their attitude for the game. St Pius came out hard in the second half and managed to score a goal of their own, making it 2-1. Redlands were doing their best to hold St Pius until the final whistle, however, a last minute goal from Pius managed to level the score at 2-2. A great effort by our 1st team who have shown they have the ability to play with the best schools in the competition.

The 2nd XI had a tough 0-0 draw against St Pius 2nd XI – a very competitive and even match with very few chances, but which really opened up in the final stages. The Redlands 2nd XI were unlucky not to net one in the closing seconds to run away with the win.

The 16A boys were feeling confident after coming off the back of their first win of the season. Playing against a St Pius side that they lost 2-0 to in the first game of the season, the boys started very strong with early chances to Awanui and Doug falling short. The rest of the game proved to be a tight arm wrestle with both teams having chances to win the game. With 10 minutes to go in the 2nd half, St Pius converted against the run of play to go 1-0 up. Nonetheless, our Redlands boys dug in and kept fighting. We were rewarded with a great team goal converted by Awanui with 2 minutes to go, the game finished 1-1.

The 15A boys were back at home this week to start the second round of games playing against St Pius. A team which the boys dominated earlier in the season with a 4-0 win, they knew they had to keep their focus to ensure another win. The game started off tight with neither side having too many clear cut opportunities. Morgan Rose managed to break the deadlock just before half time putting us into the break 1-0 up. The team came out in the second half and asserted dominance with two quick fire goals coming from Zac Stonley and again Morgan. The game ended 3-0, in a great win for the 15A side. A special mention to George and Max who did a great job controlling the midfield and allowing our creative players up front to have plenty of opportunities.

The 14A Boys have shown a lot of improvement since their last hit out against St Pius, they demonstrated a far more well-drilled and composed structure. Relentlessly defending wave after wave of attack with the occasional quick counter attack, the score remained just 1-0 coming into the 2nd half. This form continued with very little getting through until an unfortunate collision between two Redlands players saw the team concede a quick succession of goals to St Pius, however, the boys rallied and held Pius off for the remainder of the game but were too far down to claw the game back.

The 13A Boys had a convincing win against St Pius. Making it to half time with a 1-0 lead, the team really improved in the second half with short but accurate passing the team managed to score another 3 goals in the second half for a 4-0 win.

The 13B team showed some great improvement from the first game against St Pius and despite not finished the day with a win, they showed some great improvement in playing out from the back and trying to make runs in behind opposition defence. A couple of highlights were an amazing save from David in the first half and another play late in the game where Hunter managed to fly past two of the opposition players and had a great shot on goal.

There will be no games for the remainder of this term, however, training will continue as per the usual schedule except on the last Thursday of term where students will be at the athletics carnival. The ISA competition will recommence in Term 3.

Football end of season celebration

Hockey

The 1st XI Girls had a hard match up in Round 6 against a very strong CCGS side, for the majority of the game they were able to hold their own and create some good opportunities but CCGS proved to be just too strong and the game ended as a 3-0 win the CCGS. The 2nd XI were missing a few players due to injury and illness and therefore needed to call in some reinforcements for the game. They put up a great fight against the CCGS 2nd Girls, however the physicality of the Central Coast team proved to be a challenge. Despite moving up a division the Junior Girls continue to dominate. Playing against CCGS Junior A Girls, they finished the game with a massive 5-1 win and continue their undefeated streak this year.

There will be no games for the remainder of this term, however, training will continue as per the usual schedule except on the last Thursday of term where students will be at the athletics carnival. The ISA competition will recommence in Term 3.

Netball

It was a crisp morning at NBISC for the last round of Term 2 Netball and with the majority of our teams playing at home, it was great to see the team spirit run throughout NBISC. There was a great display of Netball throughout the morning, with our Inter A and Junior A teams capping off a great morning with some strong wins in the last time slot. The Jnr D team continued to show great improvement with a very strong 22-8 win over SACS 13, The Jnr B team have working extremely hard on their control throughout their training and this was on show during their early match against SACS 11, taking the match 26-16. Our Snr 2 team had a difficult second match after moving up into Division 2, with a hard fought lost to CCGS 1 and our Snr 1st team unfortunately went down to a strong Oakhill 1 team.

There are no games this weekend, with training to continue in Week 9 on Tuesday (there will be no training on Thursday 17 June due to the Athletics Carnival). A reminder that training will resume on Tuesday 13 July.

Rugby

Redlands Rugby had a wonderful weekend of matches to finish off Term 2 with traditional rivals Redfield coming out from Dural to play our 13s, 15s and 16s.

Redfield, not too long ago, would dominate Redlands across most age-groups, combining strong runners in the forwards with some pace in the backline. It was fantastic to see how far our program has come as all of our teams took it to the opposition physically, chopping legs in the tackles and running hard with the ball.

Our 13s kicked it off, matching numbers against a undermanned Redfield side. With the result already decided as a win for Redlands, our boys threw caution to the wind and threw the ball around, the game ending with over 70 points scored between the two teams. It has been brilliant to watch this group of boys develop and improve this season and I cannot wait to see what they can achieve in the back end of the season.

Our 15s were up next, facing a Redfield side that was coming top of the table and had not lost a match in over four years of Rugby. This was an incredible contest, with Redlands never taking a backward step and with the game in the balance, the ball went through three sets of hands and Daniel Lev was able to score, seeing Redlands go into the lead by 1 with less than a minute on the clock. Any nerves by the 15s were immediately quelled off the kick off as Hugo Scott stepped through the kick chase and ran away for the try that sealed the win. 15s top of the table as we go to the holiday break.

Our 16s came up against a massive Redfield side and in the opening ten minutes it seemed as if the opposition would just bludgeon our team into submission. Samuel Chubb, as he has always done, stepped up and pulled the team back into the contest with a wonderful try. From that point it was neck to neck with the teams exchanging tries into the second half. Ultimately, the Redlands team went down by one try but should be commended on the physical efforts they gave.

As we lead into the holiday break I would also like to commend our ISA Representatives who all competed in the NSWRU Trials. Hugo Scott, William Pearson and Joshua Hicks all were selected into the ISA Black Squad which is the A Division side. They played brilliantly in Tuesday match against CHS with William scoring a wonderful try on a cross field kick. All three boys will continue their development with the squad as we lead into the NSW Championships.

Tennis

On Saturday, all ISA teams played Oakhill College. This was the second time this season we had played them and knew we were in for a challenge. It was teams 5-8 that rose to the occasion to win their matches.

Congratulations to Stella Simpson Morgan (Yr 8) who, as member of the Metropolitan Stormers, had a very successful weekend, placing 3rd in the NSW State U14 Team Championships. Well done.

Week 8

As our Netball and Hockey teams have come to the end of their season, we congratulate them on their performance and sportsmanship. The 6B team, coached by Heidi Moore went through their season undefeated with the following wins over their opposition;

Round 1 Win 12-1
Round 2 Win 9-0
Round 3 Win 21-0
Round 4 Win 17-2
Round 5 Win 13-0
Round 6 Win 21-1
Round 7 Win 21-9

Special mention to the 6A and 5A Netball team who only had 1 loss each all season. While these results are great, they are not the be all and end all. Feedback from the coaches of all our netball teams this season were that the girls were keen to improve each week, were focused at training and as a result they achieved success.

CIS Touch Football

Congratulations to Charlie Reeves (Yr 6) who was selected in the CIS Boys touch side. Charlie trialed with Dany Gordon and George Andrews, who were nominated to attend the trials based on their school touch season. We wish Charlie the best of luck when he competes at the NSW PSSA Touch Football Championships next term.

Draw

The Term 3 Draw for the remaining rounds of Football and Rugby along with the girls AFL draw is now available. Please note this is a new link so please delete any old draws you may have saved in on your device. You can view it here and save to your phone/device- 2021 Term 2&3 Winter Draw. As it is live and subject to change, please do not print off the draw. We recommend checking back each Friday evening to ensure you have the correct time and venue for the following morning. There may be occasions where host schools change a time or location midweek and when this occurs the draw will be updated. For Rugby families, as per the email that was sent to you end of last term, your fixtures are released by IPSHA (Sporting Association that we belong too) on Thursday each week so your times and opposition will remain blank until then.

SMF Celebration! – Wednesday 9 June 2021

In order to thank the 200+ staff and students who helped ensure the festival’s success, on Wednesday 9 June at 1pm, a cake was served in the Upper Gallery of the Music Centre, with the prizes to be awarded for the highest number of Festival Tickets sold at this time! Congratulations to the Hunt, Houchell, Wilson and Ramsey families for their great efforts in ticket selling for this year’s show!  Thanks to our sponsors at Turramurra Music, In Tune Music & Optimum Percussion for their generous prize donation.

HSC Trial Performance Examinations 2021

Congratulations to all our Yr 12 HSC Music 1, 2 & Extension students for a very successful Trial Examination day today! Students presented their complete programs of Performances and Compositions, supported by a team of our specialists in the supporting ensemble. We are so proud of the music you are making, and wish you all the best as you reflect on the feedback of our external examiners to guide you to even higher heights in the weeks ahead.

Senior Vocal Competition – Tomorrow Night: Friday 11 June 2021

Tomorrow night! We wish our finalists all the best as they prepare to perform two contrasting works in the Senior Vocal Competition for 2021. Kicking off in the Edwards Auditorium at 6pm, performers may each bring two guests with seats secured through Trybooking.

Our adjudicator for this year will be the magnificent Clarissa Spata – a world respected performer across classical and contemporary genres. Most recently you may have seen her as a quarterfinalist on The Voice in 2020. We look forward to her valuable contribution to the evening.

‘Small Ensemble’ focus for Senior Cocurricular as we round off the term!

With plans afoot for our Annual Music Awards Dinner in Term 3 (stay tuned!), our Senior Strings, Bands & Choirs have all divided into smaller groups for student-led preparation of new pieces! All groups will be showcasing their ‘works in progress’ for their peers next week, as we decide on the line-up of entertainment for our Dinner! (Don’t worry, groups that miss the Dinner line-up will be performing their pieces for guests in our Open Rehearsals next term!)  Here are our three student-led Senior Choir groups prepping for their A Cappella ‘battles’ next week!

Lunchtime Concert Series – Senior Campus (Week 8)

Thank you to all our performers and guests who have come to cheer on our instrumental and vocal learners in their journey. This Friday sees the end of our Semester One studio concert series. We look forward to celebrating the growth between now and the Semester Two concerts for all our students.

Senior Cocurricular Music Photos – Wednesday 16 June 2021

Ahead of our Co-curricular Music photos this coming Wednesday, students are reminded to be in full school uniform with blazer. To assist the smooth-running of the process, all students must bring their Student ID Card to their photo call time at the Fahl Garden, but they do not need to bring their instruments for these photos. Wet Weather venue will be the Edwards Auditorium.

Running successfully since 2004, Griffin Ambassadors is an annual access-all-areas program for Yr 10 to 12 students supported by the Robertson Foundation. The year-long program is stocked with workshops, performances and access to industry professionals, all geared to support the next generation of theatre-goers and theatre-makers. Ambassadors are united by a common curiosity about contemporary Australian stories, a love of theatre and the motivation to know more! Ambassadors might be curious techies, budding playwrights, outgoing performers, or maybe just love going to see theatre.

Applications for the 2022 Griffin Ambassadors program will open in late 2021. To be notified when this happens, please leave your details here.
