Issue 18 2018 - 14 Jun 2018

From the Principal

Congratulations to Michael Jones OAM

We congratulate Redlands Board Director, Mr Michael Jones, who was recognised last Monday in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List with the announcement that he has been awarded an Order of Australia Medal in the General Division for service to education.

Michael has been a Director on the Redlands Board since late 1985, and served as Board Chairman from 2001 to 2016. His extraordinary generosity of time donated to Redlands, while operating a private architectural business, has been a wonderful asset for the School, which educated his three sons. His knowledge of the history of the School is expansive; he was one of those Redlands parents and friends who were instrumental in the acquisition of the High Country Campus property near Jindabyne, and of the development of a suite of facilities which has long been a home away from home to students attending Redlands Winter School, and which acts as a base for key parts of the Redlands Outdoor Education program. His work on the Board’s Physical Resources Group, which he also chaired for a number of years, has assisted many other property developments and master planning activities for the two main campuses. He has served at various times on a number of other Redlands Board committees.

Michael has previously also served as Chair of the Tara Anglican School Board, and he continues as Chair of Snowy Mountains Grammar School Board, a school which was generously assisted by Redlands through the first 12 years following its foundation. At a higher level still Michael is currently the Deputy Chair of the NSW Association of Independent Schools and sits on the Board of ISCA, the Independent Schools Council of Australia, the national body which represents the independent schools throughout Australia at the Federal level. His knowledge of independent education at both State and National levels is a great asset to the schools with which he has been and continues to be associated. The converse is also true, whereby his experience of independent schools themselves allows him to bring insights and value to State and National bodies for independent schools.

It would be hard to find a worthier recipient of an Australian award for generous and selfless service to independent schools than Michael Jones and we are delighted for him and extend to him our thanks and very best wishes.

Head of Secondary School

Participation

The focus of Tuesday’s Prefect Assembly was on student participation and involvement in the many different facets of school life and below is an excerpt of a talk I gave to to the students on this topic.

“I would like to thank and acknowledge the multitude of students involved in the many different events we have heard about today, such as Gala Arts, Winter Sports teams or the number of different Service learning initiatives.

I also look forward to seeing your continued involvement and participation in a number of upcoming events this term such as the Senior Music Festival on Friday 22 June, the Pink Socks Sports Round on Saturday 23 June or the Athletics Carnival on Tuesday 26 June.

However, I would like to take a moment to acknowledge many of you who participate in and contribute to various events in the Secondary School without fanfare, accolades or the bright lights being shone upon you.

  • The student who was part of the crew working backstage at Gala Arts
  • The student who gets up early to volunteer at Matthew Talbot House on a Monday morning – in the holidays
  • The student who was in the pit as part of the orchestra at the Musical
  • The runner who competed for the school at the ISA Cross Country who might not have earned a top placing but still tried their very best for the team
  • The debater who competes on Friday evenings and then gave up their Friday night when they were not competing to assist in hosting the FED Finals
  • The student who stays back to assist on parent teacher nights
  • The student who works with Yr 7 or 8 students in Peer Support
  • The student who looks out for a Junior School student at the crossing
  • The student who wears their uniform with pride
  • The student who gives up their seat on the bus for an adult because it is the right thing to do

To all of you and the many more who contribute to the school in so many other ways, who do not receive the accolades or are not in the bright lights, to you we say thank you. Your dedication, participation and school spirit make Redlands a better place.”

Leave Requests

Please note that the final day of school this term is Friday 29 June. It is our School Policy for all students to attend for the full duration of each term except where permission has been granted on the grounds of special circumstances. We trust you will understand that the School is obliged to adhere to this policy for absences as we place a high priority on our program of learning and its delivery to all our students throughout the year. Any requests for leave during term time should be made to Secondary School Absences email.

Drop Off and Pick Up

There have been concerns raised by members of the community about unsafe practices of parents dropping off and picking up students before and after school along Waters Road. We ask that parents please observe road rules and traffic signs and are considerate of others. We appreciate your support as the safety of our community and members of the public is our highest concern.

Library Opening Hours in Holidays

After a successful trial in the Term 3/4 holidays last year, we will once again open the Roseby Library to Yr 12 students to study for their upcoming HSC and IB Trial Examinations. The Library will be open in the last week of the upcoming holidays (Monday 16 – Friday 20 July) from 8.30am – 3.30pm. The Library will only be open to Yr 12 students and they should sign in as per normal when they are using it.

Paul Dillon

Tonight, Thursday 14 June, Paul Dillon will be holding a parent seminar from 6.00pm – 7.30pm on Adolescents and Risk-Taking entitled “Why do teens do the things they do and what can you do about it?”. This talk will have a different focus from last year’s talk to parents which received much favourable feedback. Paul is the Director and Founder of Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia (DARTA) and has been a leader in the area of drug and alcohol education for the past 25 years. He works with many school communities across the country to ensure that they have access to good quality information and best practice drug and alcohol education. His talks at Redlands are always informative and well-received by members of the community, and we strongly encourage parents to attend.

Term 3/Term 4 Notice of Departure

As we are approaching the mid-point of the year, this is a reminder that those families who are planning on leaving the School during or at the end of Term 3 or Term 4 are required to give notice to the Principal via an email to registrar@redlands.nsw.edu.au by the following dates:

  • Term 3 Departures: Friday 22 June
  • Term 4 Departures: Friday 27 July

As per our Conditions of Enrolment emailed to all families in December last year with the 2018 Schedule of Fees, there will be fees in lieu payable for any notices of departure received after the relevant date.

Yr 10 Sleepout

Redlands Sleepout preparations are underway. Students will be sleeping out on Thursday 28 June at school. Like the CEO version, the Redlands Sleepout is an opportunity for students to better understand the realities of homelessness by experiencing it, if only overnight. We will be sleeping under the Gym and having a soup kitchen dinner. We have arranged a number of guest speakers for the evening who can offer valuable insights into homelessness and specifically some of the challenges associated with youth homelessness. The following morning students will be actively participating in a range of follow-on activities. The empathy students can gain from the Sleepout experience will hopefully be matched by their engagement in a series of action and reflection sessions at School during the morning after the Sleepout.

There is a fundraising element to this event. We will be fundraising in Tutor Groups for either Taldumande Youth Services who support vulnerable children, young people and their families through crisis response, residential care and specialised casework. We will also be supporting Orange Sky Laundry, a world-first, free mobile laundry service for people experiencing homelessness. Each student in Yr 10 is encouraged to seek personal sponsorship of at least $25.00 as part of this initiative. Collectively we hope each Tutor Group will strive to exceed a combined target of $500.00.

Yr 8 SIMS Visit

Yr 8 will be visiting the Sydney Institute of Marine Science tomorrow. They will be exploring the impact we have on our local marine environment and putting into practice things they have covered in Geography and Science so far this year. It is important that they come dressed in their PE uniform, preferably wearing their tracksuit pants and warm fleece, as we will be outside for much of the day. Students will also need to bring their recess and lunch as we will not have access to the shops for the day.

Matthew Talbot Winter Donations

Winter is upon us and this is an especially challenging time for people who are homeless. Please consider making some donations to the Winter Appeal for the Matthew Talbot Hostel. Redlands has had a long association with Matthew Talbot, with our Yr 11 students and volunteer teachers attending on Monday morning every week of the year to serve breakfast. At this time of the year and again at Christmas, we seek donations of new socks and underwear, basic toiletry items such as toothpaste and toothbrushes, soap, hand sanitiser, shampoo and second hand bath towels in good condition.

Donations can be brought to school any day from now until Week 2 next term. Every Tutor Group will have a box for collections. We hope to be able to fill 48 boxes in the Secondary School.

Pastoral Care

As we build on the independence theme from last week, students have been asked to be mindful of the 35,000 choices they make each day and take increased responsibility for them. The next two holiday periods provide independent opportunities for students to take charge of their learning and consolidate their understanding. There has been a noticeable shift since Tutors and Yr 12 students celebrated ‘Independence Day’ last Wednesday and we hope this continues as students realise they have a choice regarding every aspect of their lives and have the opportunity to learn from their outcomes.

Fundraising Concert

Erin Pacholke has organised a one hour fundraising concert this Friday evening in the Music Centre from 6-7pm. It will feature a number of Yr 12 musicians with all proceeds going to Headspace. Parents and students are warmly invited to attend.

Library Open Hours

Following the positive feedback regarding extended Library hours, we will trial opening the Roseby Library on the last week of the Winter holidays. Students are encouraged to make use of the collaborative or independent learning spaces and resources available to them on Campus during this time.

Safe Driving

NSW Police and the PCYC have created a safe driver course which is designed for individual students to attend in their own personal time.  Students are encouraged to take advantage of this great opportunity and the benefits the course can provide.

Careers and Universities
  • There are some deadlines for applications coming up including the UTS IT Coop program on 17 June and the Engineering/Technology cadetship program which is on 22 June. Students must confirm with Ms Salier if they are intending to apply.

Yr 12 Leadership

The Student Leadership process will officially begin on Wednesday at our Year Assembly with a formal introduction and overview presented by Mr Sean Corcoran.

All students are encouraged to apply, but we would like to ask them to think carefully about their reasons for wanting to apply, to consider whether the students of Redlands know them well enough to vote for them, and to be prepared for very possible disappointment. It is also important for Yr 11s to realise that they all have the capacity to be leaders of the school in Yr 12 regardless of whether they hold a position. All self-nominations will be closed on Friday 29 June (Week 9, Term 2).

Student Achievements

Well done to all the Yr 11 students who participated in the ISA Cross Country Carnival with a special congratulations to Alec Price, Cameron Pascoe, Ben Kittle, Alex Ainsworth-Grace, Dominic Swift, Thomas Latchford and Trae Hare-Boyd, whose team won the first place in the Senior Boys Team Overall point score. This is the first time we have achieved such a remarkable result in Redlands 134 year history.

HSC Assessment

A reminder about the procedure to be followed if students are sick, or unable to attend a scheduled assessment task. It is essential that both the class teacher and the Dean of Studies, Mr David Randall, are informed as soon as possible. In the interests of fairness, the NSW Educational Standards Authority (NESA) require us to apply a clear assessment policy. This can be found in the Yr 11 Assessment Booklet, located on the Yr 11 page of Redlands Pulse. It is also on the Pastoral iLearn page for Yr 11.

Basically, any extension or alternative date can only be approved by the Dean of Studies. Application forms for illness and misadventure, and for permission to be absent on the date of a task can be found at the Secondary School Office. Any application must be made directly to the Dean of Studies and be accompanied by the relevant documentation, a doctor’s certificate in the case of illness.

Failure to submit an assessment, or to attend one on the due date will result in the award of zero for that task unless the correct procedure has been followed as outlined above.

Yr 10 Students are ‘sleeping rough’ on Thursday 28 June to raise awareness and funds for homelessness and to support Matthew Talbot Hostel, Orange Sky Laundry and the Taldumunde Youth Refuge for at-risk teens. In order to fundraise, we are asking that each student undertakes sponsorship for participation in the Sleepout with a target of $25.00 plus per student (this is not a limit but a target to aim for!). Students have received a fundraising sheet to complete via email this week. Additionally, during the sleepout event, students will participate in a range of activities and games that will involve gold coin donations for each game entered. A parent letter with full details has been sent this week. Please contact either myself or Ms Coleman for any queries.

Pastoral Care

The Pastoral Care focus this week for Yr 8 was based on the Personal Bank Account (PBA) affiliated with the seven Habits of Highly Effective Teenagers. Some of the hardest battles in life are the ones fought within yourself, and it is through these battles, we learn to channel our inner strength and develop character; it is then, that we truly grow. Our self-esteem, or how we feel about ourselves, operates like a bank account. Just like a savings account at a bank, we can make deposits into, or withdrawals from our PBA by the things we think, say or do. To keep the balance in our account positive, we need to have more deposits than withdrawals. The more deposits we make into our PBA, the better we feel about ourselves, both in self-esteem and self-confidence.

Student Achievements

Over the long weekend, Sasha Jansz attended the Nunawading Spectres Basketball Tournament in Melbourne with her U16 Division 2 Norths team, a prestigious tournament with over 600 teams competing. This was a very tough competition, however a wonderful experience for Sasha and her team. They are to be congratulated on winning their division which was an extraordinary result.

Announcements

On Friday 17 June, Yr 8 will be visiting the Sydney Institute of Marine Science on Friday. They will be exploring the impact we have on our local marine environment and putting into practice things they have covered in Geography and Science so far this year. Approaches to Learning

Students must complete their Approaches to Learning (ATL) by Friday this week (Week 7). To do so:

  • Students will use iLearn, open each Course Information page and undertake the Approaches to Learning quiz (eg English, Maths, History etc)
  • The survey can be found in the navigation area under Quizzes
  • Students will be allowed multiple attempts at the quiz

Your assistance with ensuring your child has completed their ATL this week is sought. More information is available in the Yr 7 Term 1 Week 11 Note Day.

Yr 7 ISA Cross Country Reflection

Last week Redlands competed in the ISA Cross Country Carnival. The opening race of the Carnival was the 12s boys 3k which involved one lap of the course. Nui Currie finished 14th followed by James Pocknee (24th place) and Nicholas Fitzhenry (28th place). In the 12 girls, Emilie Bessell placed 4th, followed by Sophie McGrath in 5th place. Both Emilie and Sophie will represent Redlands at the CIS Cross Country Carnival which is a fantastic result.

In the 13 boys 3k, Keian Murphy was 9th across the line, securing automatic selection to CIS. Lachlan Binnekamp was next across the line in 42nd place. In the 13 girls 3k, Bronte Backhouse finished in a gallant 4th place, followed by Madison Barwise (7th place), and Madeleine D’Ameida (11th place). All 13s girls will represent Redlands at CIS.

Fortnite and Teens

If you have children between 8 and 18, the chances are you’ve heard of the multiplayer online shooter game Fortnite: Battle Royale. There are mixed opinions surrounding this game. To assist in shedding some light I’ve included a few articles you may find useful. The Guardian’s parents’ guide provides an overview of the game. SMH explores many justified concerns arising from the captivated teen market. ABC News considers some of the benefits of and advice for such online interactions.

Fads can be difficult to navigate with teens. Always remember to set your expectations, make appropriate rules, inform your teen – and inform yourself, respect your teens privacy but also be aware of what your teen watches and reads.

Looking for a roadmap to find your way through the challenges of adolescence? Raising Children Network has some fantastic articles, tips and hints to help you along the way.

Once again, our Junior School students achieved phenomenal results in the 2018 Language Perfect World Championships which took place from 21-31 May. In our focused area of Spanish, which all students in the Junior School learn, Redlands placed in the following local and global positions:

4th overall in Spanish in the world out of 1,058 schools
2nd in Spanish in Australia out of 712 schools
1st in Spanish in NSW out of 212 schools

These remarkable results and continued improvement on previous years are a testament to the students’ engagement and enthusiasm for the subject, guided by Senora Colagiuri.

The highest scoring class was 6R with 28,329 points and Mrs Colagiuri remarked that the best thing about this competition is that regardless of whether you score 10,000 or 10 points, all the learning that the students do helps to improve their Spanish skills and their overall literacy skills. BIG congratulations to every student on their incredible effort and commitment to learning.

Junior Canteen

In accordance with the New South Wales Healthy Eating Guidelines, we are delighted to share some updated information of the Junior Campus Canteen menu. In NSW, the revised strategy has been informed by a comprehensive evidence-based report and a consultation process that included key stakeholders to understand the barriers and enablers for increasing healthy food and drink choices in all NSW school canteens. In addition to these guidelines, Redlands has sought feedback from health professionals in the community who have provided suggestions.

A wider variety of freshly made to order food will be available to families, as well as daily, hot food specials with more gluten and dairy-free food options. There is also a considerable reduction in the pre-packaged food choices.

It is important to note the limitations with the cooking facilities currently in the Junior Campus Canteen. With small amounts of preparation space and a lack of stove-top cooking, there is a constraint to the amount and variety of food that the School is able to prepare. The School is however looking at ways to increase the Canteen’s capacity in the future.

We hope that these first steps, coupled with our plan to move all ordering online from the start of Term 3 will provide families with a more efficient and appealing range of culinary options for you and your children. We thank our Canteen staff for guiding these modifications as a part of our commitment to the ongoing improvement of our catering offerings. The revised menu will be in effect from next Monday 18 June.

Drinking Bubblers

We were delighted to have installed another new water bubbler for students, staff and families to utilise on a daily basis. In addition to the one installed at the end of last year by the Junior School play equipment, we have installed a three-station water bubbler and chilled and filtered water bottle refiller on the Parkes Building near the flagpole. Many students have a daily water bottle that they refill and I will encourage all students (and parents) to use this station as a water source to refill drink bottles rather than purchase bottles from the Canteen as we seek to reduce our plastic consumption at School.

Annual Giving

The support from our community is very important for the School’s development. We are very fortunate at Redlands to have a long history of community support for our School through volunteering, corporate ties and financial donations. Our current facilities on the Junior Campus are enjoyed by our students and staff, thanks to the generous support of previous generations of families.

We would greatly appreciate any families who have not already done so in this financial year to support us in our journey. You can secure a family plaque, get involved with the Spring Fair preparation or donate a raffle prize. For further details, please see the Foundation section of Note Day or contact our Director of Development, Mrs Dana Casimaty, on 9968 9858. Once again, your generous support and assistance is greatly appreciated.

May I take this opportunity to remind all families that school begins at 8.20am and students are asked to line up at their meeting spot and wait for their teacher. Head of Sport

“Cant we just have fun?!”

Sport in schools wrestles endlessly with its purpose. How and why sport exists in schools often requires constant justification to students, parents and staff. This struggle is increased when sport is compared against other activities available to young people both inside or outside the school. An article by Neil Rollings, from the UK company Independent Coach Education, comments on how some schools are caught trying to pursue ‘fun’ within sports programs as opposed to meaningful engagement and student learning. If the focus of sport within schools was solely based around delivering fun and not learning, we would adjust our facilities and programs accordingly. Schools would build theme parks and water slides instead of sporting facilities and science laboratories. Fun should be considered a by-product of sport not an aim.

Sports need to provide opportunities for ‘deep learning’. Michael Fullan, a renowned educational researcher, describes this ‘deep learning’ as experiences that build global competencies using real-life problem solving”. These experiences are readily accessible through sports programs. The provision of sports within schools needs to focus on this as its aim. However, this is a difficult sell to young people in today’s society. More often than not young people are surrounded by alternatives to sport which provide more immediate gratification and reward. Sport is focused on a medium to long term impact, a reward which comes from sustained and consistent effort. Most sports are faced with difficult challenges that require persistence and the application of both physical and mental skills to overcome these challenges in order to receive any sort of reward. Even when a student does obtain a sporting goal or reward, it is not the material reward which is the priority, it is the intrinsic reward of fulfillment, contentment and achievement doing something that is challenging and meaningful.

Sporting organisations and governing bodies are rapidly trying to address this issue by making themselves more appealing to younger generations. The rise of modified versions of sports is seen as an answer, by providing shorter, less intrusive forms of sport with more excitement and instant gratification eg T20 Cricket. Whilst this may be a necessity for the business of sport which deals in a very competitive market for sponsorship, talent and spectators, it should not creep into our school sport systems. Doing so, would be to sell the meaning of sports very short of its aim. Sport should not be seen as easy or just ‘fun’, it should be viewed as an opportunity to teach young people that hard work and consistent effort towards a long term goal is satisfying. Having fun along this journey becomes a bonus.

After the great results in Round 5, we are planning to chase qualification to the Semi Finals. Some teams need more wins in the next five games but it is possible to achieve if we all attend training and be prepared to work hard. We are very lucky to have very passionate coaches teaching our players.

I am so pleased to say that the whole Sports Department have seen the improvement by our teams in one of the toughest School Competitions in NSW. The Australian Soceroos are currently working hard for World Cup success, this is very similar to Redlands Football looking to qualify for the ISA Semi Finals. Come on Redlands we can do it!

Congratulations to Scarlet Thomas who has been selected into the State U15 Metropolitan Football team to compete in the National Youth Championships. Good luck Scarlet!

IPSHA Sport

Matches resume this week in the IPSHA competition and we are in Round 6 on the schedule. There are a few minor changes from the draw with Football (Soccer) and those changes have been communicated by email to those affected. Yr 5 matches are now: A at 8am, B at 8.45am and C at 9.30am, which is reverse of our regular order. All those matches are at Sydney Grammar School St Ives (Top Field).

Yr 4 matches were both advertised on the schedule as being at 10.48am – it’s a typo and both games are actually at 10.45 at UNSW, David Phillips Field, Banks Avenue Daceyville.

CIS Cross Country

Our 15 Cross Country runners compete at Eastern Creek in the NSWCIS Championships today. Pictures and results from the event will be posted next week.

Big Freeze at the G

Daniel Bailey from Yr 3 had the opportunity of a lifetime last weekend. He was the Mascot at the Melbourne Demons AFL match In front of 83,000 at the MCG. It was a big event as it was a main fundraiser for MND which Neale Daniher suffers from. He gave an amazing speech and all 18 AFL coaches went down a slide into an ice bath to raise funds. Daniel and a band of Demons supporters marched to the ground with Beanies and Flags and then got to lead the Melbourne team onto the ground with the team which was fantastic.

Pink Sock Round at Macquarie University 23 June

On Saturday 23 June Redlands will be hosting a pink sock round in support of the Breast Cancer Network Australia. This year represents the BCNA 20th anniversary and we are hoping to raise as much as possible for the network. This year we encourage all students across the school to purchase pink socks from the Uniform Shop for $15.00 in support of this charity.

All parents and coaches are also encouraged to wear a Pink item on the day. The Uniform Shop also has pink Redlands hats and tshirts for purchase for $15.00 and $20.00 respectively. All profits from purchases will go towards BCNA.

On this day we have arranged for a large number of our Winter sports teams to play at our home venue, Macquarie University. Throughout the day, there will be a Bake sale and a BBQ running with all proceeds going towards the charity.
