“Cant we just have fun?!”
Sport in schools wrestles endlessly with its purpose. How and why sport exists in schools often requires constant justification to students, parents and staff. This struggle is increased when sport is compared against other activities available to young people both inside or outside the school. An article by Neil Rollings, from the UK company Independent Coach Education, comments on how some schools are caught trying to pursue ‘fun’ within sports programs as opposed to meaningful engagement and student learning. If the focus of sport within schools was solely based around delivering fun and not learning, we would adjust our facilities and programs accordingly. Schools would build theme parks and water slides instead of sporting facilities and science laboratories. Fun should be considered a by-product of sport not an aim.
Sports need to provide opportunities for ‘deep learning’. Michael Fullan, a renowned educational researcher, describes this ‘deep learning’ as “experiences that build global competencies using real-life problem solving”. These experiences are readily accessible through sports programs. The provision of sports within schools needs to focus on this as its aim. However, this is a difficult sell to young people in today’s society. More often than not young people are surrounded by alternatives to sport which provide more immediate gratification and reward. Sport is focused on a medium to long term impact, a reward which comes from sustained and consistent effort. Most sports are faced with difficult challenges that require persistence and the application of both physical and mental skills to overcome these challenges in order to receive any sort of reward. Even when a student does obtain a sporting goal or reward, it is not the material reward which is the priority, it is the intrinsic reward of fulfillment, contentment and achievement doing something that is challenging and meaningful.
Sporting organisations and governing bodies are rapidly trying to address this issue by making themselves more appealing to younger generations. The rise of modified versions of sports is seen as an answer, by providing shorter, less intrusive forms of sport with more excitement and instant gratification eg T20 Cricket. Whilst this may be a necessity for the business of sport which deals in a very competitive market for sponsorship, talent and spectators, it should not creep into our school sport systems. Doing so, would be to sell the meaning of sports very short of its aim. Sport should not be seen as easy or just ‘fun’, it should be viewed as an opportunity to teach young people that hard work and consistent effort towards a long term goal is satisfying. Having fun along this journey becomes a bonus.

Hope you all had a great long weekend. We are back this weekend in the ISA competition and most of the teams are at Home. We encourage everyone to attend and support our teams at our home ground at Macquarie.
After the great results in Round 5, we are planning to chase qualification to the Semi Finals. Some teams need more wins in the next five games but it is possible to achieve if we all attend training and be prepared to work hard. We are very lucky to have very passionate coaches teaching our players.
I am so pleased to say that the whole Sports Department have seen the improvement by our teams in one of the toughest School Competitions in NSW. The Australian Soceroos are currently working hard for World Cup success, this is very similar to Redlands Football looking to qualify for the ISA Semi Finals. Come on Redlands we can do it!
