From the Principal

Good News Week/Community Spirit

Four special bits of news that have kindled the warmth in my soul in a week that has brought us much-needed rain, but also cold and blustery winds, all connect to the importance of community and to kindness toward others.

First, I received two letters this week about caring for dogs of owners who are part of our local community. One was from an elderly gentleman whose dog was hit by a car on Military Road outside the School. His wife had been looking for the dog, which had survived the hit, but had run off. Some students and staff who had witnessed the event told the lady what had happened. She told her husband how kind and helpful those who had seen what had happened had been both when they first met her and in the following days, when they called to ask whether the dog had been found. Five days later the couple were contacted by another local man to let them know that he had found the dog, which was in his lounge room eating a banana! The couple and their dog are happily reunited. The letter concluded: “We have many friends within your School community, but the good hearts of Redlands I had the great fortune to meet on this very stressful journey were outstanding people, both students and teachers alike. Thank you sincerely from our family, to your family”.

Late last week another adventurous dog, which escaped and set out on an adventure, came across in its wanderings and sought to befriend two of our Yr 10 Football girls (Sofia and Marie) who were training in Cammeray Park. They recognised that the dog was lost and took charge. They tried to contact the owner but when the phone was not answered, they walked the dog home. The owner wrote to the School, and when our staff had identified the two girls, she came up to leave a card and a small gift for each of them to express her gratitude for their “sense of responsibility and community spirit”. This kind of behaviour represents true community spirit and we are all very proud of all those who display it unhesitantly.

Third, I reported on a number of wonderful sporting successes last week. This week I am able to speak of the sports prowess of the parents who formed Rowing crews and competed against parent crews from other schools at the Great Autumn Regatta for parents and other supporters, which took place last weekend at the Sydney International Regatta Centre at Penrith. Nine Redlands crews (the highest representation from all the schools) which had trained in an exemplary fashion, inspired by their children’s Rowing, displayed their own fitness and skills.

Three crews won medals at the Regatta: Dogs of W’Oar won Gold in the A final, the all-women’s crew of Menop’oars won Bronze in the B final, and the OAReos won Gold in the C final.

We congratulate all the parents and past parents who participated and thank most sincerely this year’s organisers, Kevin Bush and Sonja Price, and also our Head of Rowing, James Petering. Another fine example of School community spirit.

School Representative Sport

It appears that there is some misunderstanding on the part of some parents of Secondary School students about the fact that Redlands requires all Secondary students to participate in a Representative Sport for one season (summer or winter) each year. The only exemptions that are made are for students who are following at a high level the Dance Academy program, or for a student who has a medical condition that precludes the student from playing a sport for Redlands. All Secondary students are also expected to pursue a fitness activity offered by the School on Thursday afternoons if they are not engaged in a Representative sport.

There is nothing new about this and the expectation regarding sport participation is made clear to all parents of students whose children are entering the Secondary School. The only change that has been made during the past 12 years was the reinstatement of a compulsory Representative Sport for Year 12 students in their final year. There is no doubt that a healthy body supports a healthy mind and also playing in sports, most of which are team sports, builds collegiality among students and a belonging as a member of Redlands.

With the increasing amount of time that many school age children are spending in passive activity with their electronic devices, there is an increasing concern that children are becoming obese and not pursuing a healthy lifestyle.

There are of course many other reasons for students to engage in sports activities, all of which relate to the holistic program which Redlands offers to students.

Many independent schools still require students to play representative sport in both seasons each year. The two key reasons why Redlands does not impose this higher commitment is that we also have a very strong Performing Arts program, and many other Cocurricular activities. We recognise that students can sometimes take on too many things across the Cocurricular offerings, therefore our Pastoral leaders keep an observant eye on those who may be trying to do too much at the detriment of their academic studies. Further, Redlands appreciates that its students really like the range of Cocurricular activities, which are provided as choices, but we cannot offer all sports and therefore we give students the option to take an external sport in one season each year.

Gala Arts 2019

How does Gala Arts simply keep getting better and better? This year, in response to the wishes of the Prefects and members of the Student Representative Council who wished to expand inclusivity in the Redlands Arts program, a new category of Visual Arts was introduced. With support and assistance of Mr Harpley and the Visual Arts Department, an exhibition of student photography was on display and the winners were announced at the conclusion of the evening.

The Performing Arts Captains kept the audience greatly amused, as well as informed, as they introduced, like professionals, the 24 items in the program. It was wonderful that the judges were all Redlanders and the high standards of performance across the program made it very challenging for them to decide upon the winners in each category. We also congratulated Dumolo upon winning the House Shield for 2019.

I sincerely thank Marita Jansons, Alyssha Clarke, Joy Daley, our House Mentors and all the other teachers and tutors involved in supporting the students in this spectacular celebration of the creative arts.

Gala Arts is one of the very special events in the Redlands calendar. It brings together the talent across the whole Performing Arts program at Redlands. It is also fitting that it concludes with the finale of the Showcase by Year 12. We wish those in coming years all the best as they take the stage to share their talents and entertain the audience. The pipeline of talent shows no sign of narrowing.

Foundation

Let Your Light Shine on Education

Our School is built on so much more than bricks and mortar. While our facilities are so important for sustaining and building a dynamic learning environment, even more vital is the sense of community and spirit we create within these environs.

One such precious ingredient for this is the means–tested Redlands Scholarship Fund, launched by Principal Dr Peter Lennox in 2010. This Fund creates life-changing opportunities for exceptional young people to realise their full potential, when a Redlands education would otherwise be out of reach.

Prior to this, Redlands has a long tradition for awarding scholarships, the first awarded in 1920 for 1921 under the Principal Miss G A Roseby. During the Depression, many alumni were awarded unofficial bursaries as Miss Roseby waived the school fees for countless Redlands families whose fathers had lost their jobs. As a result, many of these students were able to stay at school and graduate, attend university and pursue professional careers.

Join Us Today and Make a Lasting Difference

Every gift will make a significant difference, regardless of size. Donations to the Scholarship Fund are tax deductible.

For further information, please contact Dana Casimaty, 9908 6484 or visit our website.

Students are Leading the Way

Our Yr 12 students are already behind the cause, volunteering to help organise activities to inspire student participation in reaching this objective, including a challenge to our Alumni to join them in contributing to this Fund and creating their own Class Legacy Gifts.

A Peek Inside the Classroom… PDHPE

This term I have asked teachers to invite me to their lessons to witness some of the “wow” moments that occur in their classrooms. So, over this term, I will be visiting classes in each subject area and will be giving little “peeks inside the classroom” in my Note Day pieces. This week I will write about my PDHPE lesson.

This Wednesday I had the great pleasure of joining in Ms Howard’s Yr 8 PDHPE lesson. On a cold and rainy morning, the students and I started the day with a modified game of Tip and Bull Rush in the gym. The game combined physical skills, teamwork and strategy and became increasingly complex over the course of the lesson. The students had great fun over the course of the period and seemed to gain particular enjoyment in tagging me out throughout the games. Not surprisingly, the team I was on seemed to lose most of their games – apologies to my teammates! Thank you Ms Howard and 8R PDHPE students for this peek inside your classroom.

Gala Arts

Last Friday night was one of the highlights of the Redlands calendar – our annual Gala Arts House competition. It was a truly amazing night of dance, theatre, music and singing and the high quality of all performances was quite frankly, stunning. Congratulations to all students and staff onstage and backstage who made Gala Arts possible. And a special congratulations to Dumolo House for winning the overall Gala Arts House Shield.

Paul Dillon Parent Talk: Tuesday 18 June 6:00-7:30

On Tuesday 18 June, Redlands is pleased to welcome back Mr Paul Dillon to speak to our parent community. Paul has been working in the area of drug and alcohol education for the past 25 years and presents to many schools and community organisations in the Sydney area.

Paul will be delivering a parent presentation on the evening of Thursday 18 June free of charge to all parents and carers from 6.00 – 7.30pm in Redlands Hall. This year, Paul will be presenting on the topic entitled, Teenagers, Alcohol & Other Drugs 2019: What’s happening, what’s out there and how much influence do parents really have?.

Using the most recent data available, this talk will examine the use of alcohol and other drugs by school-based young people. It will have a particular focus on the changes in patterns of alcohol use that have occurred in recent years, as well as any particular concerning trends around illicit drug use. There will be a close examination of the positive influence that parents can have on their child’s drinking behaviour, as well as the barriers that they may face during adolescence. It aims to empower parents with a positive message and assist them in having open and honest family discussions in this complex area.

This session will be covering material aimed at parents and carers and it is not appropriate for students to attend. As Paul’s sessions are always highly relevant, informative and practically based, we strongly encourage all interested parents to attend as we continue to work in partnership in developing our students’ wellbeing.

Pink Sock Round

On Saturday 15 June, Redlands will again be hosting a Pink Sock round in support of the Breast Cancer Network Australia. Redlands has a proud association with BCNA and we look forward to raising funds in support of its mission again in 2019. This year we encourage the School community to purchase pink socks from the Uniform Shop for $15.00 in support of this charity. All spectators and coaches are encouraged to wear a pink item (or several) on the day to demonstrate support. The Uniform Shop also has pink Redlands hats and tshirts to purchase for $15.00 and $20.00 respectively.

On this day we have arranged for a large number of our winter sports teams in Rugby, Football and Hockey to play at our home venue, Macquarie University. Throughout the day, there will be a bake sale and a BBQ with all proceeds going towards the charity. We will also have an Alumni tent and other fundraising activities. The BBQ and bake sale will cater for all students and post-match functions for 1sts teams. Netball teams will also be selling pink baked goods at their home venue, NBISC, on the day.

In order to make this a successful day, we would appreciate any assistance from parent volunteers across our community. Please follow this volunteer link to register your assistance on the day. Some of the ways that our community can get involved include:

  • Providing items required for the bake stand (doughnuts, muffins, cupcakes, slices, cookies)
  • Collecting donations on the day
  • BBQ assistants (minimum of two volunteers for each hour shift from 7.00am-12.00pm)

If you are unable to come on the day, you can donate by clicking here. We look forward to seeing the Redlands sporting community support this very worthy charity.

Matthew Talbot Winter Donations Appeal – Socks Undies and Toiletries

At this time of the year, as the weather gets considerably colder we encourage the Redlands community to make a small contribution to our annual appeal for socks, underwear and toiletries for the Matthew Talbot Hostel for homeless men in Woolloomooloo. Please consider picking up a few items to contribute. These can be dropped off at the Secondary School Office, brought in by students during Tutor lessons or to the Staffroom in the Liggins building. This will mean that the Hostel has a good supply of these items for the coming months.

Yr 10 Redlands School Sleep Out

Again this year our students in Yr 10 will be participating in the Redlands School Sleepout. On the night we will have an opportunity to hear from guest speakers representing Taldumande and Orange Sky Laundry about the services they provide to young people at times of crisis or people living rough on the streets. Students have been encouraged to seek sponsorship for this event so that we can make a financial contribution to these organisations. If you would like to support Yr 10 students and these organisations, you can use the following links to make a contribution.

Travelling Overseas in the Holidays?

Please keep in mind that if you are travelling during the holidays and have an opportunity to pick up toiletries from the airline or hotels, we can pass these on to the Matthew Talbot Hostel as well.

Social Engagement Opportunity – Young Person’s Planning for the Planet

This week we have kicked off our a student led project exploring the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Students from Yrs 10 and 11, particularly those studying Geography and Environmental Systems and Society, will be working on putting together a detailed plan for how NSW can respond to each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. This is a meaningful and practical way for students to apply their knowledge, curiosity and creativity to addressing a significant social challenge.

Cross Country

Last Wednesday, 13 Yr 12 students cheered each other on at the annual ISA Cross Country Carnival as they strode into their most successful record in recent times.

Asha Boswarva, Caitlin Du Plooy, Rebecca Faurby, Zoe Kimber, Lindsay McNeil and Penny Butler built a formidable team, winning the overall Girls shield for the first time in Redlands history. Lindsay and Asha crossed the line almost simultaneously, finishing fourth and fifth, while Rebecca Faurby came seventh out of over 30 competitors. As a result of such an excellent performance, they have all qualified for CIS.

The Senior Boys team, comprising of Alex Ainsworth-Grace, Lachlan Greig, Thomas Latchford, Cody McCartney, Dominic Swift, Will Tobin and Lachlan van der Pluijm came 2nd among all the competitors. In addition, Will Tobin, Lachlan van der Pluijm and Cody McCarney have now progressed to the CIS Cross Country Carnival, to be held on Thursday. Well done, runners!

Gala Arts

Brava and bravo to all the Yr 12s who participated in Gala Arts last Friday. Another magnificent evening of entertainment displaying a variety of the talents and passions of our boys and girls in different categories. I am sure their high calibre must have given the judges a difficult time to reach their decisions. I would also like to thank all students involved in the Showcase. A huge number of Yr 12s took part despite their many competing commitments, reflecting the warm community spirit of this cohort. All their dedication at rehearsals manifested in a beautiful and energetic final production. Great work by all!

Yr 12 Study Room

Since last term, two classrooms have been offered exclusively to Yr 12 students for a study space during lunch times. T1 is used for individual silent work, T2 for collaborative study. Students can have lunch while catching up with work, either independently or through peer discussion. From this week, R2.1 will also open for the same purpose on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 3.30-5.00pm. An English teacher supervises the room during this period.

We welcome more students to use these spaces in support their ongoing learning and time management. Students are also reminded to maintain the tidiness of the classrooms.

HSC Syllabus Study Skill Workshop 2 Optimising Your Study Sessions by Ms Rachael Riley

Student Reflection by Tara Sahagian

I found the session with Ms Riley very interesting and informative. She reminded us that we should have time to sleep and do social activities and study at the same time if we use our time as wisely as we can. As well as this, she reassured everyone and told us that if we have not been getting the best marks for our assignments up to date, we shouldn’t be discouraged because there is so much study and preparation that we can do in between now and our final exams to revise. Some tips for this revision included things that may have been obvious, but certainly I needed to be reminded of, for example:

  • Making sure that you do questions (and asking teachers for feedback for these questions) to test your knowledge and find gaps in knowledge of things you don’t know instead of reminding yourself what you do know already;
  • Effective study doesn’t include summarising the textbook or highlighting;
  • Studying for short periods at a time with breaks will be much more productive than studying for an extremely long time;
  • “Diamonds are created under pressure”.

I walked out of this session feeling really motivated and ready to try new things – whether that is the way I use my breaks, the way I study, and even my perspective towards studying which I really did appreciate and it was so lovely to get her insight on it.

Interesting Article of the Week

website 1

website 2

This week I have attached the websites from two of the speakers some Yr 9 students were fortunate to hear on Tuesday at Altitude Day (see more detail below). The first website is that of Ben Pettingill, who became blind at the age of 16 years. As a result of what Ben has gone through, he believes that life has no limits other than what we impose on ourselves and on others, and that it is up to us to create the life for ourselves that we want. The second website is a business that has been created by Lauren Shuttleworth and is relevant for Yr 9s as it connects with the organisation Room to Read. Lauren has developed an idea where each stationery product sold funds a specific number of education days for girls in developing countries. The hope is that it reduces the inequality evident between boys and girls in these countries.

Yr 9 into Yr 10 Information Evening

Next Wednesday 12h June from 6.00pm, there is an information evening for Yr 9 students and parents to give them details about the options and electives that are available for Yr 10 2020. Please come along with your child to find out more.

Arnhem Land Immersion Opportunity

In the April school holidays next year, students from our Year Group have the opportunity to live with and learn from the Yolngu people of Arnhem Land, in the Northern Territory. This is an incredible experience that allows students to develop a greater knowledge and understanding of our land, Aboriginal culture, and self.  All parents and students are invited to find out more at the Information Evening on Monday 24th June at 6.15pm in the Roseby Library. Any questions should be directed to Mr Simon Colyer.

Altitude Day

On Tuesday, 20 Yr 9 students were invited to attend Altitude Day run by the organisation YLead for Yr 9 students across NSW. Over double the number of students applied to attend this event but unfortunately, we were only able to take 20, and they were selected based on their emails to Tony and me, expressing their interest in the event. The students had a wonderful day where they listened to a number of speakers encouraging them to ‘dream big’ and ‘listen to understand’. The hope was that the students felt “You can 100% change the world. It’s the little things that really count. BE BRAVE,” (Emma Watson, actor and activist). The students returned to Redlands inspired to make a difference in the world and be the best they can be. They will be presenting what they learnt to the Year Group in their assembly next week.

Gala Arts

Congratulations to the talented students involved in Gala Arts last Friday: Jacob Gold, Alex Gibbs, Ema Yasumura and Tate Boswarva. It was a magnificent evening!

Social Awareness Program

Students have begun looking at organisations whose primary focus is reducing the inequality that exists between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians and will be getting to know the organisation in detail.

Pastoral Care Program

This week students completed the annual Behaviour Awareness Survey, where they were able to anonymously express their opinions about the school environment, endorse positive contributions from students, and identify any undesirable behaviours that are not aligned with the values of Redlands.

I hope you have a great week.

Redlands Junior Boys placed 4th, with our Boys team placing 3rd overall. The School placed 1st in the Coeducation division – well done to all involved!

  • Gala Arts was a fantastic evening. Well done to all of our Yr 8 performers (Sabrina Blasco, Helena Dracakis, Ellyce Evans-Beard, Jacob Reiser and Avalon Thomas) and photographers (Cleophe Eliatamby, Sebastien Griffith and Ophelia Jackson). Congratulations to Sebastien Griffith who won the
Intermediate Photography division with his picture taken atop Cradle Mountain in Tasmania.

Redlands Behaviour Awareness Survey

Completed annually, the Redlands Behaviour Awareness Survey (BAS) allows students to express their opinions about the school environment, endorse positive contributions from students and identify any undesirable behaviours that are not aligned with the values of Redlands. Results will be shared with the Senior Campus Counsellor and Year Advisors but students who report information will remain anonymous. The BAS for Yr 8 2019 will be completed in Week 8 during Pastoral Care time.

Upcoming Webinar

The relationship between social media, alcohol use and parental monitoring in adolescence webinar will be held on Wednesday 19 June from 12pm AEST and presented by Ms Anna Smout. This webinar is for parents, school staff, and anyone else seeking information about the relationship between social media use and drinking, and how parents can protect against alcohol use in adolescence. Australian teenagers spend more than 3 hours per day on social networking sites. Greater time spent using these sites has been linked to problem drinking in adolescence. This webinar will present information on the
relationship between using social networking sites and problem drinking, and will focus on how parents can intervene to protect their child from alcohol-related harms.

Year 7

This Week

In Tutor this week, students brought a question for their first round of student led Tutorial sessions. Many students used this time very effectively, actively engaged with their peers, utilised the white boards to demonstrate their thinking and worked through their own questions. We are looking forward to another round next week.

Congratulations to our Yr 7 ISA Cross Country runners! Our Redlands girls made history with the first Overall Girls 1st place position with our Junior Girls coming in 1st as well. Our boys also did an incredible job, earning 4th position in the Junior Boys competition. Well done to all of our runners: Isaac Brooks, Hamish Campbell, Zara Clement, Lara Farrell, Rafferty Heard, Flynn Kieran, Daniel Lev, Hugo Little, Liam McFarlene, Fletcher Mennie, Charlie Parker, Gianmarco Pradel, Sophia Rolon, Felicity Schlederer, Eliot Stewart, Daisy Thomas, Sofia Thorne, Zoe Waterfield and Annie Zhang.

Last Friday night, we were all inspired by the talent we have among our students as highlighted at Gala Arts showcase. Several of our Yr 7 students had artwork chosen for the event and we will share pictures in our next week’s edition of Note Day.

Congratulations to our Yr 7 da Vinci Decathlon competitors. Our team has achieved our best results ever. Yr 7 earned 2nd place in Art and Poetry.  Congratulations to Noah Berbic, Sholto Mirrlees-Black, Conor Petersen, Emma Sullivan, Isaac Swann, Christopher Szeto, Daisy Thomas and Melinda Wright.

Term 2 Pastoral Care: Hitting Our Stride

Positive Behaviour For Learning and Playground Environments

Positive Behaviour Support for Learning (PBS4L) is a comprehensive, integrated whole school approach to student wellbeing and behaviour. It focuses on building student commitment and understanding of the specific behaviours that contribute to safe, organised and respectful learning and playing environments. At the beginning of the school year, each classroom on the Junior Campus developed a set of behavioural expectations under the pillars of Learning, Respectful Relationships and Safety and Organisation. These have been published and are visible throughout our classrooms and learning environments. Following this, our Junior School Student Representative Council, under the guidance of Ms Christina Cosolito, conducted class meetings focussing on the behaviours that contribute to a positive playground environment. Teachers and students from Kindergarten to Yr 6 were consulted and their ideas summarised, resulting in a campus-wide agreement.

These playground expectations were launched at Preparatory and Junior School assemblies earlier this week. In support of student awareness and understanding, Ms Jacqui Lofgren, along with a group of student volunteers, produced a film demonstrating the behaviours under each pillar. If you would like to view this film and learn more about the social, emotional and behavioural competencies that support positive relationships and student wellbeing, please feel welcome to attend a parent information session on Thursday 20 June at 8.30am in the Arnold Library, Junior School. For further information contact Ms Sam Kourakis, Dean of Students, Junior Campus.

The da Vinci Decathlon

Last Thursday, over 1300 students from across the State in Yrs 5 and 6 participated in the annual Knox Grammar NSW da Vinci Decathlon. The Decathlon celebrates the academic gifts of young people by providing a stimulating and challenging competition run in the spirit of an Olympic Decathlon. Students competed in teams of eight across ten disciplines; Engineering, Mathematics, Code Breaking, Art and Poetry, Science, English, Ideation, Creative Producers, Cartography and General Knowledge.

With the day divided into three sessions and many tasks running concurrently, both the Redlands Yrs 5 and 6 teams demonstrated excellent collaboration and took a group approach to problem solving. With more than 50 teams in each age group, the Yr 6 team placed 12th overall and successfully achieved 2nd place in Cartography, 3rd place in Code Breaking and 7th place in Science. Well done and congratulations to all participating students and my thanks are also extended to Mrs Hibbert, Mrs Ling and Mrs Rugg, who prepared and accompanied the students. Pictured at top.

Primary A ISDA Debating Success

Congratulations to the Primary A (Yr 6) Debating team who won their Quarter Final against St Aloysius last Friday. They are off to the Semi Finals next week against St Ignatius College. We wish them the best of luck and look forward to hearing how they go!

Yr 5 Antarctica Presentation and Taronga Zoo Excursion

Last week, Yr 5 were lucky enough to listen to Deb Shoosmith (mother of Luke Shoosmith), share her experiences of living and working as an Oceanographer in Antarctica. Yr 5 learned about the Antarctic environment, flora and fauna as well as the challenges of living and working on the most remote continent on the planet. The presentation was brought alive by many visuals. This experience enriched the children’s appreciation of the fragility of Antarctica and how we can protect it moving forward. Many thanks to Deb for this wonderful presentation.

Yr 5 also took part in a full day excursion to Taronga Zoo, where they participated in a workshop led by Taronga’s Education Department, Surviving in a Changing World. This complemented their current inquiry topic of Fragile Environments in Geography and also their study of Adaptations in Science. The students had a close encounter with some of the animals and were also able to see the new baby elephant. The Yr 5 team would like to thank the 18 parent helpers who came along on the day and helped make it such a resounding success.

Happy Birthday Redlands!

This week the School proudly celebrated 135 years of excellence in education at Redlands. In addition to this it celebrates 120 years on the Military Rd Campus and 30 years since the first International Baccalaureate cohort graduated. A delicious birthday cake was shared amongst staff with a culminating Foundation Day Service on Friday 7 June. For some new families beginning at Redlands, you may not have been aware that our school has its origins in the College for Girls in 1884. Of interest is the history page on our website where the School’s archivist has gathered some wonderful pictures and information of the School’s history.

Gala Arts Festival

A joint initiative of the Secondary Arts Captains and House Captains, the Gala Arts festival was created to showcase the artistic talents of Redlands students whilst at the same time promoting inter-House competition and House spirit. Last Friday’s concert certainly highlighted the extraordinary talents of many of the Secondary students and equally the skill of the numerous staff who assisted the students with their pieces both on stage and behind the scenes. One would be forgiven for thinking that the students were professional performers and I am continually impressed with the expert skills exhibited by such young adults. Highly accomplished Redlanders Hannah and Eliza Reilly, Jack Frerer, Luke Haberecht, Jordan Auld and Dr Nicholas Xiradis were tasked with the very difficult job of adjudicating for the evening. I urge you to read their biographies and those new to our school might gain an understanding of the quality of students that Redlands continues to produce. Flynn Henry’s (Yr 11) exceptional Tap dance won him the coveted Overall Winner of the night. At the conclusion of the Vocal, Theatre, Instrumental and Dance components, an additional section this year was the inclusion of the Visual Arts finalists’ pieces. Congratulations to Sebastien Griffith (Yr 8) and Stephanie Ng (Yr 12) who were awarded overall winners in each section.

At the beginning of the school year, each classroom on the Junior Campus developed a set of behavioural expectations under the pillars of Learning, Respectful Relationships, and Safety and Organisation. You may have noticed your child come home with a Positive Learning certificate after Assembly upon receiving three nominations for following behavioural expectations under any of the pillars. The Junior School Student Representative Council, under the guidance of Ms Christina Cosolito, conducted class meetings focussing on the behaviours that contribute to a positive playground environment. Teachers and students from Kindergarten to Yr 6 were consulted and their ideas summarised, resulting in a campus-wide agreement.

Queen’s Birthday

Redlands will be closed on Monday 10 June to observe the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. A reminder, if you are taking students out on a school day, it is the School’s policy to request permission by emailing the Head of Early Childhood, afellowes@redlands.nsw.edu.au prior to your leave dates. If you are planning a trip over this long weekend, we wish you safe travels and look forward to hearing all about your adventures.

Illness

Winter is here and with the increased number of students absent and being sent home due to illness, it would seem timely to remind you of the part you play in keeping our community healthy and well. If your child is unwell with a fever, runny nose and/or cough, please keep them at home to reduce the chance of spreading their infection to others. Most coughs and colds are caused by germs called viruses and they are passed on by coughing and sneezing the virus into the air. Thank you for your close attention to this matter.

Student Drop Off

Students are not permitted to be alone on the school grounds before 8.00am.  School begins at 8.20am and between these times when there is a teacher on duty, students are allowed to play on the Piazza or visit the Library for some quiet reading time. A bell will ring at 8.20am guiding students to wait for their teacher at their meeting place. We understand from time to time your arrival to school is delayed; however, we do ask that you be mindful of continual late arrivals, especially as role modelling good time management skills is a valuable message. If you arrive after 8.20am, please do not go directly to the classroom, rather, see the Prep Reception and a member of staff will sign your child in and escort them to their classroom causing the least amount of disruption to the beginning of the day.

Uniform

I would like to remind all Preparatory families of the winter uniform expectations for Term 2. The school blazer is a winter requirement and must be worn to and from school and during Assembly and Chapel. Each classroom has hanger space where students can hang their blazers if they would like to take them off throughout the day. If it is a PE day, then blazers are not required. The Student Planner has more information on correct Uniform Guidelines. Staff will be reminding students of these guidelines via a sticker in their Planner.

Redlands House/Transition Gold

Happy Birthday Redlands!

This week the School proudly celebrated 135 years of excellence in education at Redlands. Maths and Literacy in Transition Gold

Transition Gold are exploring a project all about Maps. Did you know that the story of Alexander’s Outing by Pamela Allen follows a journey through Sydney of a family of ducks? The journey can be mapped and followed from the Botanic Gardens through to Art Gallery Road and into Hyde Park where the Archibald Fountain is found. Transition Gold wanted to know if the story was true. They researched using Google to find out that it was based on an event when a young policeman made sure that a family of ducks made it safely to Hyde Park across College Street many years ago. Pamela Allen used the story on which to base her book and even ensured that the Bottle Tree was replaced when it died. TG used a map of the area to follow the journey and plot the path on a real map.

Toys at Preschool

We are grateful for the abundant resources at Redlands House, and we therefore encourage the children to leave toys at home. Could you please support the staff with making sure all personal toys are kept at home to avoid them being broken or lost?  If your child has a special item to share for News, please leave this with your class teacher in the morning.

Football

Round 5 saw some great improvements in results across the Boys Football program. With all of our teams travelling to Oakhill College. Our 2nds Boys were up first, and playing against a strong Oakhill B side made it a tough game but our boys showed some promising signs for the next time they play the Oakhill C side. After coming off a great win against St Spyridon, our 1sts Boys were hoping to get some more points on the board. With some great passages of play for our boys, we had opportunities but were unable to capitalise, eventually losing 0-1 due to an Oakhill penalty. Our 16A Boys managed to secure their first win of the season with 1-0 over Oakhill. The 15A boys had a 1-0 lead early in the game, growing in confidence after a close game against SACS during the week. Despite being unable to hold onto the lead, the team was far more competitive than we were earlier in the season. The 14 Boys teams both played well, with the 14A Boys having a 0-0 draw and the 14B Boys finishing with a 3-1 win. The 13A Boys also had a 0-0 draw and the 13Bs a 2-4 loss.

Our Girls program has been going from strength to strength, with more great results over the weekend. We had the Junior A, Inter A and 2nds at home. The 2nds were first up, and playing against Barker were prepared for a tough game. Our girls got off to a great start and managed to come away with a 2-1 win. The Junior A Girls were up against Central Coast in what seemed to be an evenly matched game. With the game tied 1-1, Central Coast scored again only to have the goal disallowed, resulting in a 1-1 draw. The Inter A Girls continued their great streak, and playing against CCGS Inter B, finished the day with a 6-1 win. The 1sts Girls played against Oakhill in what proved to be their toughest match. A well fought game from our girls saw them finish with a 2-1 win, keeping their undefeated record intact for another week.

Congratulations to Scarlet Thomas (Yr 11) who has been selected into the U17 Girls NTC team.

There are no games this Saturday due to the long weekend. A reminder that the next round, Saturday 15 June, will be our at home Charity Round, Pink Sock Day. Please remember to purchase your Pink Socks from the Uniform Shop as soon as possible.

Hockey

Over the weekend the Girls 3rds took on SACS, playing strong as a team. They scored early to be up by one in the first half and came on even stronger in the second half playing with purpose, scoring another two goals. Our defence was strong and the girls attacked well as a team. A great 1-3 win for Redlands.

The 2nds had a big 6-0 win against Barker. Starting out with a very competitive game, the girls took control for what was a one sided match. The girls played one of their best games so far against one of the better teams of the competition.

The 1sts played a friendly match against SACS Division 2. From the very start of the match, this was a fast flowing game with lots of ball movement and opportunities throughout the game. With the scores levelled at 1-1 and with only ten minutes of game remaining, one of the SACS girls was injured with a cut to the head. The rest of the game time was eaten up with the required medical treatment leaving the result as a tie.

Enjoy the long weekend and we resume with Round 6 on Saturday 15 June with all teams playing at Macquarie University Sporting Fields as part of the charity round. Be sure to purchase the pink socks!

Netball

We had some very exciting matches held at Dunnet Hall over the weekend, with all three teams facing Barker. Our 2nds have been working hard all season with a number of tight matches, this week was no different, taking on the Barker College 3 team who were sitting at the top of the table. The girls were working hard, keeping it close, with the first three quarters been tightly contested with the score not exceeding any more than three goals. Unfortunately Barker were too strong in the final quarter. Our Senior 3rds had a nail-biter against Barker, coming off the back of a close loss to the Barker 8 team the previous week (by 1 point!). The girls were looking to kickstart their season against Barker 7 this week, working well with their crisp movements into the shooting circle and able to control the tempo of the match. With less than a minute on the clock, the girls held a one goal lead. Redlands were able to close out what was an exciting finish to the game.

Please note this weekend (Saturday 8 June) there are NO Netball fixtures. Both the NSNA and ISA Competitions will recommence on Saturday 15 June. There have been some regrades in both competitions, so please ensure you check both the Redlands Rhino and Redlands Pulse – Netball for up-to-date fixtures next week.

Rowing

Each year the Redlands Rowing program joins schools such as Kings, PLC Sydney, MLC and St Catherine’s to offer their parent and supporter groups the opportunity to row for 4-5 weeks before meeting each other at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games Rowing venue to race against each other over a distance of 500m at the Great Autumn Regatta.

This year we had a record number of nine crews of eight rowers, with these Redlands crews making up one third of the field. For many crews, this was their first time in a Rowing boat while other participants were more than experienced with numerous seasons of experience under their belt. One of our parents was returning to Penrith where their last race at the venue had been the finals of the Sydney Olympic Games however this was the exception to the rule with most being “could have been champions”.

Our newer crews might have started out a little wobbly with cautious first steps, thinking how crazy they must have been to sign up for this experience, however by the end of the program they were more than race ready. Each crew trained twice a week over the program, meaning they had time to learn before applying the challenge of Rowing at race pace.

The regatta was held in perfect conditions, a rare gap in what has been some recent unpleasant weather. Each crew raced in a Heat, Semi Final and then a Final, with progression into each race being used to sort crews into ability where the fastest crews met each other in the A Final and then worked backwards down to the D Final. The Redlands crews acquitted themselves outstandingly, not only in the crew name rowing puns (Menop’oars, Gladi8oars, Dogs of W’oar, OAReos and Viking W’OARiors to name a few) but also in their on-water performance. Three of the crews visited the podium with a bronze won by the all women’s crew of Menop’oars in the B Final while the OAReos won the C Final and the Dogs of W’Oar redeemed their 2018 near miss to yet again win the A Final.

I would like to acknowledge the assistance of a number of our Rowing students (Stephanie Larcos Yr 11, Amelie Archer Yr 10, Alex Holtheuer Yr 10, Sophia Maxwell Yr 9, Charlie Harman Yr 9 and Elizabeth Holtheuer Yr9) who coxed some of the crews throughout the training and on race day, in some instances coxing their parents to victory!

A special mention to Kevin Bush and Sonja Price. While both parents of the school, they have been key to setting up and coordinating this year’s event. The efforts required to organise 80+ individuals into crews of 8 can only be compared to trying to herd a similar number of cats through a gate. The participants and I are very much in your debt.

We will be again looking to run this program for the start of Term 2 2020, so start working on finding that long lost flexibility and feel free to make contact with the Rowing Head Coach – James Petering to enquire as to how to participate next year.

Rugby

Our away weekend against Oxley got off to a great start with our Under 13s playing their best game of the season, running away with a brilliant 25-5 win against Oxley. Our 14s immediately followed this up with an equally impressive victory, putting together a wonderful second half as they came together as a team to record a 41-22 win.

Across on the main pitch, our 1st XV were quietly preparing for their crucial match against Oxley, a side previously undefeated this season. This match shaped as something much more meaningful than just a win, with Oxley not only being the team that previously forced us into relegation but also had a controversial victory against us last year. Cameron Pascoe and the other leaders within the squad spoke about the need to fix the ledger, with a win against Oxley not only moving us further up the ladder but also meaning our overall record against the school would be three from four including our wonderful Semi Final last year.

The game started perfectly, Redlands controlling position through our forwards. Our lineout was superb. Redlands, with all of the position soon had a well worked try, Jett Weir scoring in the corner. Converted from the side line by Cameron and Redlands were up 7-0. For the next 15 minutes, Oxley attacked our line, the Redlands forwards holding them back again and again. Unable to break our line, Oxley gave away two costly penalties and to finish the half Redlands were able to again score, this time under the posts, Redlands 14-0.

As has been the case this season, we let the opposition back into the game after halftime. Letting Oxley score an easy try after being unable to clear our lines the score was drawn 17-17 with less than two minutes on the clock. Off the kickoff, Riley Felton soared above everyone else, plucking the ball from the hands of two Oxley players. Redlands was unable to hold on, knocking it on and giving Oxley the last play of the game, a scrum 35m out. The game was all but over, Oxley would have been happy with the draw, but the Redlands forwards wanted more. A full arm penalty, a kick to win, no more time on the clock. Cameron, our 2019 1st XV Captain, calmly pointed to the posts, not a sound. Sailing over the black dot, the crowd erupted, the Oxley players fell to their feet, the Redlands players leaping over each other to hug Cameron. A famous Redlands victory and one that will be a defining play in our season. The Team Song at the end echoed (https://aabowden.smugmug.com/Redlands-Rugby/2019/1-Jun-v-Oxley-1sts/n-vCj8W3/i-JHN6qn5/A )

Congratulations to both Cameron Pascoe and Thomas Vekas from our 1st XV. Both of these boys have made it through both trial periods and been selected in the ISA Representative sides.

Cameron was selected as Outside Centre in the ISA 2nds and will have the chance to push for selection in the ISA 1st XV when he plays in the two trial games held at St Pius X. Thomas impressed in his trials, especially the one held last Sunday in the Blue Mountains. Thomas is the starting Hooker in the ISA 3rd XV and will also look to put pressure on the players picked ahead of him when he has the chance to come off the bench for the ISA 2nd XV, playing alongside Cameron.

Both of these boys have been outstanding for our 1st XV and these selections go some way to demonstrating how hard they have worked. To have two players pushing for selections in these higher representative teams shows how far our program has developed and the calibre of players involved.

Tennis

On Saturday, the Redlands ISA Tennis teams all played St Pius X College. The 1sts led the charge with a great win, fighting for each point in many exciting rallies and strong teamwork in the doubles matches. Phil dominated his singles match leaving little opportunity for his opposition to win games with a decisive 6-0 win. The 2nds followed suit with two of our youngest Tennis players combining for the first time this season as a doubles pair to help their team to victory. The 3rds came through to win more rallies and crucial points to take more sets than their opposition, clinching the match. The 4ths cruised through their sets dropping only five games all day, a great effort. The 6ths went into Saturday’s match undefeated and walked away still undefeated, a few close games and a few errors gave St Pius the opportunity to get close to taking a set from the team, but all players were able win the crucial points and practice their match playing skills under pressure. With the first half of the season over, all Redlands ISA Tennis teams enter the second half well placed in their division. Remember, when you are challenged, ‘’If you do not believe in yourself, no one will do it for you’’ Kobe Bryant.

NSTA teams braved the cold morning to once again challenge themselves to play their best Tennis and improve their match playing skills. It is pleasing to see the teamwork and sportsmanship displayed by all but especially those students who have teammates sick or injured.

Just a reminder, Saturday 8 June is the long weekend and no ISA or NSTA Tennis matches are scheduled. Matches resume Saturday 15 June.

Waterpolo

Our Intermediate teams again had some great results on Monday night, with both the girls and boys teams showing great improvements week to week. There will be no fixtures for the Seniors this Friday (7 June) or for the Intermediates on Monday (10 June).

Junior Sport

Queens Birthday Long weekend.

There are no matches this weekend due the Queen’s Birthday Weekend. Training will resume on Wednesday morning next week and matches are as scheduled for weekends until the holidays.

AFL

Our AFL boys went down courageously against Newington last week and showed some real fight to stay in a tough contest against a strong opponent. The game finished with Redlands 17 points down and attacking for the best part of the last quarter without being able to add points. The regraded boys AFL draw has been announced and was emailed to parents, it is also available via Redlands Pulse.

Girls AFL will be available for students from Yrs 5 and 6 during Term 3. There are still spots for players available. Girls interested in playing AFL matches on Saturday mornings in Term 3 should sign up in the Sports Office ASAP. Girls looking to make a head start on their skills for Term 3 are welcome to join the Friday morning skills sessions before school on the Oval

Netball

Our netballers have a well earned rest this week with no matches due to the long weekend

It’s been great to see so many students utilising the before school sessions. Despite the cold and wet weather today, there were 30 plus girls bright and early for Leonie Stewarts skills session.

Redlands 13 continued on their winning ways, earning a promotion to A grade after being the dominant force in their B grade competition so far this season.

Redlands 15 joined the winners circle last week and farewelled outgoing coach Deni in fine style, all the pieces clicking together nicely in what will be a turnaround game for their season (pictured at top).

Redlands 17 and 18 battled in very tight contests to come up with draws last weekend. It’s a sure sign that we’re playing well and improving when we are involved in such tight matches.

Our Net Set Go Girls continue to impress. For Yr 3 girls, Net Set Go is a great pathway for learning Netball and our girls have displayed teamwork and commitment. Coach Erin is very enthusiastic about the prospect for this young group.

NSNA have regraded the draws which has an impact on a number of our teams. Please keep an eye out for email advice from Ms Eliis with all the important information about regrading for teams.

Hockey

Our Hockey girls were untouchable last weekend showing amazing teamwork to take a 3-1 victory over Queenwood. The Yr 6 girls in this team are so generous in their effort and praise towards younger players and are real shining lights of the way that year’s students embrace and can be strong leaders across the School. Not only are they playing great team based Hockey, but their willingness to share knowledge, understanding and experience is a true benefit to the younger girls coming through.

CIS Rugby Triallists

Toby Luce and Oscar d’Almeida flew the Redlands Rugby flag last week at the CIS Primary Rugby trials. Both boys are involved in our rep Rugby Sevens program and club and district level Rugby outside of school, and did the Redlands Rugby community proud with their honest hardworking effort at trials. Despite neither boy making the final 20, both drew comments and commendations from the range of selectors who were impressed with Oscar’s bruising defence and commitment to the breakdown, whilst Toby only narrowly missed selection after featuring as a hooker in the Possibles v Probables matches.

Winter Before School Training Schedule

For all trainings on the Junior School Oval, please use your own discretion in extreme rain and weather situations. Often parents and students will have left home to attend before we can make a realistic judgement on the weather. If there is no danger of lightning, nor heavy rain which would soak anyone training outdoors, our aim is to go ahead and run the session. Coaches and/or staff will be in attendance. It’s not always possible to find an alternative training venue, but students will be supervised until school begins in this circumstance.

Drama and Theatre

Gala Arts

What an exciting night Gala Arts 2019 was, showcasing the talents and amazing gifts of many of Redlands seasoned performers, especially our wonderful Yr 12 performers as well as some new faces to the Redlands stage. The exceptionally high standard and breadth of performance styles just keeps getting stronger every year, highlighting the passion and dedication of our young performers and richness of talent in the Redlands community. It was a delight to see such a galaxy of stars and such a wide age range in the performers, with many new comers stepping on to the Concert Hall stage. What a privilege it was to welcome back Redlanders Jordan Auld, Luke Haberecht, Jack Frerer, Nick Xiradis as well as our very special guest judges, Redlanders Hannah and Eliza Reilly. Congratulations to our wonderful comperes, the performers, staff and parents involved for all you did to make it such a wonderful evening.
