Issue 16 2022 Term 2 Week 6 - 02 Jun 2022

From the Principal

‘Be Brave – Make Change’ is the theme for Reconciliation Week this year and it was enriching to attend several Junior School Year Group assemblies this week, during which students discussed the importance of reconciliation in Australia. It was pleasing to note that a number of Year 6 students were already aware that the week commemorates two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey – the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision.

We often focus on the School Value of Respect, which informs our expectations of how we treat each individual in our school community, valuing them for their unique characteristics. The Reconciliation Australia website states powerfully that ‘reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures.’

Students at Redlands don’t see this as anything unusual and in my experience in listening to their discussions, they naturally start from a position of respect for First Nations culture. Education is assisting progress on the path to true reconciliation; however, the theme this year calls us all to be bolder and braver in our approach and to embrace the truth, even when this can be confronting and challenging to hear.

It was fantastic to see staff taking part in a series of ‘Learning Walks’ this week, to provide insight, connection and collaboration across the Junior and Senior campuses. Teachers and leaders from the Junior School visited Secondary School classrooms and vice versa. Evidently the Junior School staff were welcomed like rock stars by the Year 7 students, demonstrating the strong relationships formed in prior years.

I sincerely thank the RPFA who generously provided a lovely morning tea this week as a gesture of thanks to staff on both campuses, on behalf of all Redlands parents. Their following kind words were very much appreciated by staff:

We appreciate your efforts to hold a safe and welcoming learning environment for all of our young people and at the same time challenge and stimulate their minds.

We value how much you believe in them for who they are today and see their potential, nudge them to dig deeper, dream big and hold a growth mindset.

We are grateful for the care, the role modelling, the fun, the shared wisdom and the wonder you bring every day.

And for all the things we know you do that we can never directly witness, we do see it shine through in the way our young people step into the world and thrive.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you all!

Thank you RPFA and Redlands parents!

Mr Stephen Webber

Community Update

This is Redlands

Our motto, ‘Let your light shine’, is a phrase taken from The Sermon on the Mount, ‘Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in Heaven’ (Matthew 5:16 NIV). At Redlands we aim to provide extensive opportunities to enable each student’s light to shine and to foster the light in those around them, and those who need support.

We are fortunate to have an altruistic community. Parents and friends of the School proudly support the enrichment of our students’ lives in many ways, through regular donations and by giving one of the most special gifts of all – their time.

Redlands, like most independent schools, has a Foundation that supports the School’s strategic and philanthropic programs. The Foundation Advisory Committee (FAC) provides the School with specialist counsel in support of the short and long-term objectives of these important programs. The FAC’s experienced stewardship of our philanthropic program enables Redlands to continue to invest in the growth and advancement of the School.

Like the FAC, our Parent Contact Groups, Friends of Groups, Alumni Association and the Redlands Parents and Friends Association all come together as passionate and dedicated volunteers to selflessly support our School and the wider Redlands community.

‘Let your light shine’ is an ethos we carry in all our endeavours and I remain grateful for the guidance and support that our volunteer community so generously continue to provide.

Please don’t hesitate to connect with the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Year 12 Legacy Gift – The Tradition Continues

“Over this past term, Billy, I, and members of the Legacy Gift team have been planning a movie night for the current Year 7 students. This took place last Friday night where we had a great turn out of numerous Year 7 students eager to enjoy the pizza and movie, which was Johnny English Strikes Again. After transforming two classrooms on Level 2 of the Redlands Learning Hub into a movie theatre, the Year 7 students made themselves comfortable in their Oodies and pyjamas and enjoyed the fun and relaxing movie night. Raising $905 towards our Legacy Gift we had a very successful night which would not have been made possible without the help of Ms Casimaty, Mr Millham, Ms Mountain and the rest of the movie night Legacy Gift planning group. A special mention to Year 12s Ema, Tamis, Joel, Katina, Ashani and Hugh, who took time out of their Friday nights to come help Billy and me make this possible.

Collections

Final Call for Light for Lismore

Collections of stationery and craft supplies will end this Friday 3 June. Thank you to everyone who has already donated items. Through this collection, we are helping to support 170 registered educators and around 2,000 children per week. Without these educators, there is no care for these children, while their parents work and try to rebuild their lives after losing everything.

Our Prep and Junior School children are decorating boxes for each of the educators and writing letters of hope to their peers in Lismore. Let’s help to fill up these boxes with as many requested items as possible. Craft supplies such as scissors, dough kits, palettes, beads, pom poms, tissue paper and string are especially needed in addition to any of the items on the list below. Please donate items in Redlands House and Prep receptions areas and Junior School classrooms.

Worn Up Uniform Recycling

As part of our sustainability efforts, Redlands has partnered with Worn Up with the aim of diverting old school uniforms from landfill to be upcycled into new products. The RPFA will be collecting old Redlands branded uniforms that are not suitable for the second hand uniform until next Wednesday 8 June, with collection bins located in the Prep, Junior and Senior school receptions. Please do not send in current uniforms in good condition, which can be donated in Term 3, or non-Redlands branded items, as the RPFA has limited storage space and volunteers to sort through the items. Speaking of which, do let us know if you’re around next week to help sort and pack!

Head of Secondary School

The rain has held off this week and students and staff have been able to take advantage of playing and sharing in outdoor spaces. Whilst it has certainly been very chilly, the students have thrived in the sun and appreciated the opportunity to stretch their legs (and lose their handballs). Today Yr 11 attended a Careers Expo with their Year Advisor, Assistant Year Advisor, Academic Deans and the Redlands University and Careers Advisers. From all reports they were exceptional at this event and spent their trip back on the bus eagerly discussing future career plans. This afternoon we anticipate training going ahead, and are keeping fingers and toes crossed that all teams can compete this weekend.

Year 10 HSC/IB Senior Studies Pathway Information Forum and Subject Walk’n’Talk

This event was held last night and along with the Deans of HSC and IB, Mr Bentley, Head of Teaching and Learning spoke to Year 10 and their parents. Mr Bentley’s messages were well received and a brief snapshot is provided here:

“At Redlands we are fortunate to be able to offer our students two well-established and internationally recognised programs for their final two years of study – the NSW HSC and the IB Diploma Programme. Both programs are rigorous and designed to provide each of our students with rich opportunities to meet their individual needs and interests so that they can be confident, creative and critical thinkers. To pursue academic excellence and have a growth mindset. To problem-solve, collaborate and communicate and use their knowledge and abilities for the good of others.

Of course, these are not just skills or competencies that are developed at Redlands in the final two years of study but form part of our broader educational philosophy towards learning which is articulated in the Redlands Learning Platform which is designed to enhance learning four all of our students from Preschool to Year 12. At the heart of what we do is a strong commitment to inspire our students to achieve-life readiness and to let their light shine.”

Mr Bentley provided his top 10 Tips for students making the selection process.

  1. Choose what you are interested in and good at.
  2. Learn about what the HSC and IB programs offer – both are challenging and will stretch you.
  3. Know that we offer a wide range of subjects in each course – 38 in the HSC and 26 in the IB.
  4. Make an informed choice – talk to key people including our Academic Deans, Subject Coordinators, Year Advisor, Careers Advisors, Head of Secondary School or me.
  5. Don’t get caught up in picking a subject or a program because of what you might have heard about scaling. This is not usually a recipe for success! There are lots of myths and untruths about scaling. You can learn the facts by coming along to the Sydney Uni UAC information night on Monday 6 June 5.30pm.
  6. For the IB programme, there has been some media coverage about changes to ATAR conversion table. Know that these changes will have very little or negligible difference for our students.
  7. Don’t choose a course or program just because your friends are doing it.
  8. Set clear goals, visualise a successful image of yourself as a learner and maintain effective work habits.
  9. Do make the most of your final two years and be actively involved in a range of school activities on offer at Redlands.
  10. Have a sense of humour!

Today the Senior Pathway Selection Conversations between Year 10 students and key staff commenced. The Deans, YA and AYA, Head of Teaching and Learning, Head of Learning Analytics and Mr Allen, Head of History, representing the Subject Coordinators, will spend some valuable time with individual Year 10 students, hearing about their interests, passions and plans for the future. Thinking and assumptions will be challenged and supported, so that all students move through the discernment process to reach a decision with which they are confident. Mr Gray, Dean of Activities, and Mr Castelli, Head of Learning Analytics, can be seen below meeting with Isaac Brooks and Henry Charles, respectively.

Sydney University and UAC Subject Selection Information Evening

This event will be held on Monday 6 June from 6.00pm in Dunnet Hall. Light refreshment swill be served from 5.30pm and students will receive their UAC books on this evening. We encourage Year 10 students and parents to attend this event as part of the senior pathway discernment process. Parents can register their attendance here.

Student and Community Spirit – Swimming Carnival

This week our Heads of House and Student House Captains met with their Houses, ahead of next week’s Swimming Carnival. Lots of fun and spirit was generated and students were provided with key messages about next Thursday, such as:

Swimmers – Appropriate swimwear is to be worn in the pool. Goggles and swim caps are to be worn for races.

DressAll students should dress in their House colours. At a minimum, students should wear an appropriate top in their House colour.

At the Swimming Carnival students are expected to be wearing the appropriate clothing, sitting with their House in the appropriate area and actively supporting the other students in their House. The behaviour and conduct expected of students at school will be expected of students at SOPAC, including their travel to and from the carnival on school buses. In order to support students to demonstrate their best selves, the following boundaries will be in place on Thursday:

  • Students will not be permitted to sit looking at their phones or laptops – these will be confiscated after the first warning.
  • Students are encouraged to bring their own food and drink and will only be able to purchase limited food from the canteen at SOPAC.
  • Students will not be allowed to wander around SOPAC – they will be reminded only once to return to their House and support their House peers, before being issued with a Friday afternoon detention.
  • Inappropriate, risky or persistent poor behaviour will not be tolerated. Students engaging in this kind of behaviour will be collected from SOPAC by their parents, following a phone call from the Year Advisor.

Thursday 9 June – the finer details for parents

On Thursday all students need to be at school by 7.00am so they can board buses on time from various designated points on the Senior and Junior campuses. The carnival runs until approximately 2.15pm and we aim to be back on the Senior Campus by 3.20pm. Buses will not wait for late students.

Typically, most students return to school on the bus at the end of the carnival. This is encouraged.

Students may return home with parents at the conclusion of the carnival but will not be permitted to leave before the carnival concludes. Parents wishing to collect their children from SOPAC, or return home with their children as they are spectators, must provide written permission to the Year Advisor by midday on Thursday. As they day is about House Spirit and community, we do not anticipate requests to leave the carnival early as the students are expected to remain for the entire day to support their peers.

Further information about the Swimming Carnival is contained in the letter published last week, requesting parental permission. (on Pulse) All students are expected to attend the Swimming Carnival, unless they are unwell. If unwell, parents should email ssabsence@redlands.nsw.edu.au on the day of the Carnival and supply a relevant medical certificate.

Legacy Gift – Yr 7 Movie Night

Report by Billy Thomas (Yr 12)
On Friday 27 May, the Yr 7 movie night was held on the second floor of the Learning Hub at 6pm. Seven Yr 12 students worked hard to put the event on; organising the food and drink and arranging the room for the movie. The movie was Johnny English Strikes Again, which was a hit with the Yr 7 students. Mrs Dana Casimaty also helped immensely in organising and putting on the event, and we are very thankful for the pizzas and juices that she managed to obtain for the night. Despite a bit of mess, the night was a great success, with a netted $905 that will go towards the Class of 2022 Legacy Gift. We thank all the Yr 7 students who attended and contributed towards this cause, as well as all the Yr 12 students: Katie Wightwick, Katina Casimaty, Ema Yasumura, Tamis Hunter, Joel Keith and Hugh Sellar, that lent a hand in preparations and tidying up afterwards.

ISA Cross Country Results

Subject Selection Process Update

Thank you to all parents, carers and students who attended last night’s Yr 10 into Yr 11 Pathway Information Forum and Subject Walk’n’Talk. The students impressed from the moment they entered Redlands Hall, being guides for their parents and being receptive to all the information shared by Deans, heads of department, teachers and Ms Van de Peer.  The excitement and buzz of having parents on campus and a face-to-face session was also a delightful experience.

Sydney University and UAC Subject Selection Information Evening

The event will be held in Dunnet Hall on the Campus and will commence promptly at 6pm with light refreshments being served at 5:30pm. Registration for this event is required and parents/carers must register separately from their children.  Please click here to register. This event will not be recorded.

A range of speakers will address important questions such as: What is the ATAR? What should you consider when selecting your subjects for Years 11 and 12? What are prerequisites and assumed knowledge? What is university really like?

Man Cave

This term, we have organised for Man Cave to present to our male students on Wednesday 15 June to support young men in having healthy relationships, to reach their full potential and to contribute to their community. The program offers a safe space to discuss the unique challenges and opportunities of masculinity for young people of all gender identities and sexual orientations.

The Man Cave is

“… a preventative mental health and emotional intelligence charity that empowers boys to become great men. [They] exist because suicide is the leading cause of death for men aged 15-44.  It’s not car crashes, drug overdoses or coward punches. The biggest killer of young men is themselves. Not only that, more than 1 woman dies every week at the hands of a man and most of the time this is a man they’re close with, someone they trust. After working with over 24,000 boys across the country, [they] fundamentally believe that these statistics are preventable through early intervention programs that focus on boys strengths rather than their deficits.”

For more information, see the website: https://themancave.life/

We are currently organising a similar experience for female students at a later date this year. Please notify me at aynson@redlands.com.au if you would like to further discuss your child’s involvement in this program.

Student News

Zoe Halliday attended an event called Girls on Track at Sydney Motorsport Park. This was an initiative to promote STEAM subjects for girls and to promote girls’ involvement in motorsports. https://motorsport.org.au/events/girlsontrack.

“On Friday 27 May, I headed up to Eastern Creek for the Girls on Track program hosted by FIA and there were so many cool people there. It was honestly an amazing experience because I got to meet not only drivers which you usually see but people from behind the scenes of motorsports such as mechanics, engineers, media, and marketing teams. I had been karting the previous Thursday near the place that Girls on Track happened (Sydney Motorsport Park). It was a super fun and interesting to hear about her experiences in karting from a whole group of young females so far. I also thought that it was pretty cool that I got to meet Molly Taylor, an amazing Australian rally driver, who was so nice and friendly to talk to. While we were there we were taken on a tour of one of the 5000 garages and the formula cars.

I got into motorsport quite a while ago and it’s something that I really enjoy. I mainly follow Formula 1, and sometimes the supercars and Moto GP. I was actually lucky enough to recently attend the Australian Grand Prix with my Dad where we watched Formula 1 in person, and we got to meet some drivers and people behind the scenes, watching the race from the Red Bull Ampol Garage for the Supercars race. We got to meet Jess Dane there, the person who got us into Girls on Track, who is a co-owner and works in commercial operations. It was overall such a great opportunity to hear from all the different perspectives, for example all the people behind the scenes of sport, those who develop the cars we get to see racing on track, and people working in all other parts of the business to the driver we get to see hop in the car and get the points for the team. I think it was really helpful and so much fun and I’m so grateful for the experience!”

Student News

In very exciting news, our very own Mia Kwintner has been named as one of the top 50 Cheerleaders in Australia and New Zealand (14 and under). As a part of this, Mia attended an elite training camp with specialist coaches and the other select athletes.

In addition, last month Mia was in America competing in the World Championships and she was named as one of the top 50 Cheerleaders (‘Next Generation’ 14 and under) in the world. This is huge achievement given that 47 athletes are American and only 3 are international. As a result, Mia has been invited to train in America for a week with this group of athletes.

Congratulations to Mia on this outstanding achievement!

Learning Walks

Senior Campus Learing Walk

Junior Campus Learning Walk

Last Friday, I had the privilege of joining Mrs Robinson (Yr 6 Coordinator), Mr Brakell (Yr 5 Coordinator) and Mrs Smith (Dean of Teaching and Learning) for a Learning Walk through Yr 7 Maths and English classes.

One of the most joyful aspects of the two hours was reconnecting with former Junior School students who were equally thrilled to see us and welcomed us into their new learning environment along with their teachers.

Coordinated by the Head of Teaching and Learning, Mr Bentley, the purpose of our walk was to learn more about pedagogical practices in the Secondary School with a specific focus on numeracy and literacy including reflections and observations in relation to questions including the ones below.

  • How might we arrange our physical learning environment?
  • Who was doing most of the thinking in the classrooms?
  • What did we notice about single sex and mixed gender seating?
  • How evident was deeper learning and what did it look like?
  • How engaged in learning were our students?
  • Did the learning reflect the values and philosophy of the Redlands Learning Platform?

It was wonderful to see how engaged the students were in their learning and following this opportunity, today, we were thrilled to welcome Ms Van de Peer (Head of Secondary School), Mr Bentley (Head of Teaching and Learning) and Mrs Rolon (Dean of Studies) for a reciprocal visit to classrooms in Years 5 and 6 as well as some of our Learning Plus groups.

NSW da Vinci Decathlon

Last Thursday, over 800 students from across NSW in Yrs 5 and 6 participated in the Knox Grammar NSW da Vinci Decathlon. The Decathlon celebrates the academic gifts of young people by providing a stimulating and challenging competition run in the spirit of an Olympic Decathlon. Students competed online via Zoom in teams of eight across ten disciplines: Engineering, Mathematics, Code Breaking, Art and Poetry, Science, English, Ideation, Creative Producers, Cartography and Legacy.

With the day divided into three sessions and many tasks running concurrently, both the Redlands Yrs 5 and 6 teams demonstrated excellent collaboration and took a group approach to problem solving. Congratulations to the students involved and to Mrs Hibbert and Mrs Cocks for guiding them.

Sydney Writers’ Festival

The Junior School writers’ workshop club had the privilege of attending the Sydney Writers’ Festival last Thursday 26 May and it was fantastic.

We arrived at 9:30 and waited around Town Hall for it to start at 10. In the time we had, we posed for pictures and did a catwalk on a red carpet, waved at incoming schools and inspected funny-looking, possibly robotic pigeons. Until finally 10:00 a.m. arrived. We all sat down excitedly with our notepads set up and pencils freshly sharpened. The lights dimmed slowly as a tornado of butterflies swarmed in our tummies.

The first author to come on stage was Mick Elliot, spotlight following him as he told us about his strangely shaped chicken-nugget head. (Not to bully him, but he said it himself.) Mick wrote the series Squidge Dibley and calls himself “author and professional mischief-maker.”

After Mick finished up and ran energetically off stage, Matt Stanton was next. He told us about a billion things about robotic pigeons, exploding whales and how the Mona Lisa was never finished. He is the author of Funny Kid, which we think is based off him!

The third author was Nat Amoore, who ran onto the stage with her cheeky little grin lighting up the room. She told us about her childhood stories and her latest book, We Run Tomorrow, among others. Nat acted out her twenty-four favourite movies which serve as inspiration for her writing, all in twelve minutes with Mick’s help.

Then came lunch when everyone stuffed their faces full of treats. We all entertained ourselves by playing Chinese whispers over and over and over again until finally the second period came.

We heard from Corey Tutt, who founded Deadly Science, a program which encourages Indigenous people in STEM fields.  He’s just written a book called The First Scientists, and he told us every little detail about it.

And finally, Remy Lai came on with a big smile on her face.  She is an author and illustrator who wrote Pawcasso and Pie in the Sky.  She has two dogs named Bossy Boots and Poop Roller and lives in Sydney.  She showed us how to draw like her, but some of our attempts looked quite horrendous in comparison.

We love writers’ workshop and thank you so much, Ms Moore-Patel and Mr Guha, for letting us have permission to enjoy this special day!

NSW State Tennis Team Selection

We were thrilled to hear that Ami Dalla Pozza (Yr 6) has been selected to represent NSW at the Australia and New Zealand Tennis Championships on the Gold Coast later this month. This is a remarkable achievement and reflects Ami’s dedication to practice and improvement and her skill level. We wish Ami well and look forward to hearing how she fares in this national tournament.

RPFA Staff Appreciation Morning Tea

Our staff were extremely grateful to receive some scrumptious morning tea treats this week from the RPFA on behalf of our parents and carers. The generous thought was very much appreciated and enjoyed and on behalf of the staff, I share our gratitude for this kind gesture.

Old School Uniforms

The RPFA has partnered with Worn UP on diverting old school uniforms from landfill to be upcycled into new products. The RPFA is collecting old Redlands branded uniforms that are not suitable for the second-hand uniform sale until next Wednesday 8 June and there will be a yellow Redlands Worn UP wheelie bin in Junior reception for the collection of old uniform items.

Student Health Matters

This week, our nurse has had to send a number of students home who are coming to school unwell and with multiple flu symptoms. Whilst our COVID numbers have been extremely low this term, we have had many students and staff away with flu so I ask families to ensure that students are well enough to come to school so as not to spread germs in classrooms.

Code Camp – Holiday Camp 12-14 July (Yrs 2-6)

RPFA / Worn UP Partnership

As you may be aware or may have read in the RPFA section of Note Day last week, the RPFA has partnered with Worn UP on diverting old school uniforms from landfill to be upcycled into new products. The RPFA will be collecting old Redlands branded uniforms that are not suitable for the second hand uniform sale from Wed 1 June to Wed 8 June.

To accommodate this, there will be a yellow Redlands Worn UP wheelie bin in Prep reception until Wednesday 8 June for the collection of old uniform items. Please only place old Redlands uniforms in these bins.

A huge thank you to all the very generous parents who have donated so far. If you would still like to donate any items, please drop any craft things in the box by next Friday. The students have started their box decorations and have been busy writing and creating colourful cards with messages of kindness.

Heritage Week 6-10 June

Next week we celebrate Redlands Heritage Week which highlights different chapters of the School’s history, the foundations of the School and our special Redlands culture and community.

Our focus for Heritage Week this year is to celebrate the History of Science and Innovation at Redlands, and we certainly had a terrific start to this celebration with the successful Science and Innovation Luncheon on Friday 20 May. Not only did the luncheon celebrate science and innovation with reflections by guest speakers from various eras in the School’s history, but it also served to raise money for a new means-tested scholarship named in honour of remarkable Redlander, Dr Sue Morey AM (’59).

Throughout next week Prep students and staff will be celebrating in the following ways:

  • A focus on our heritage during Prep School and Junior School assemblies next week
  • A Prep School Heritage Tour on the Senior Campus on the morning of Thursday 9 June
  • Our school archivist will be visiting Kindergarten on Tuesday to share pictures and stories with our students.
  • A display of historical photos will be on display in the Prep reception.

Student Achievements

On Wednesday 25 May, the Redlands Cross County community presented an inspiring example of determination, resilience, and encouragement. The ISA Cross Country carnival challenged students to move past their comfort zone and engage with an intimidating sport. It was the support of the Redlands community that saw every competitor finishing strong and ensuring they left nothing on the course, despite the unfortunate weather conditions leaving multiple students crossing the finish line dressed in mud (or shoeless).

A special mention to Finn Gurney in 12 Boys for taking home 2nd place, Isaac Brooks for finishing strong in 3rd place, Bronte Backhouse for finishing 5th, and Amber Kusano in Year 8 who finished 7th. These results come from their hard work and perseverance. However, it was through the determination of all Redlands runners who participated that allowed Redlands to place 1st in the Senior Girls, as well as 3rd Overall for the Boys.

Congratulations to everyone who made the CIS squad (listed below), we wish you the best of luck for the upcoming carnival:

  • Bronte Backhouse (U17 Girls)
  • Emilie Bessell (U16 Girls)
  • Isaac Brooks (U16 Boys)
  • Maddy d’Almeida (U17 Girls)
  • Thomas Brown (U13 Boys)
  • Finn Gurney (U12 Boys)
  • Daniel Koppers (15 Boys)
  • Amber Kusano (U14 Girls)
  • Landon Mansell (U14 Boys)
  • Nicholas Meagher (U12 Boys)
  • Gianmarco Pradel (U16 Boys)
  • Finn Woodward (U17 Boys)

An incredible result that speaks to the efforts of Coaches Ms Gocher, Ms Carroll and Mr Frost, as well as Mr Ellis for his administration and encouragement. A particular thanks to Mr Walker, for his continuous dedication to the cross country program.

Football

In Round 5 the majority of our Football teams were back in action at our home fields, Macquarie University. Despite the recent rain the fields were open and although they were a little soggy, our players and coaches were thrilled to get the opportunity to play again at our home fields. Our Girls Football program had another fantastic weekend. The 1st Girls were up against the top of the table Barker College 1. It was a tough game with both teams having a number of chances but Barker were able to convert more of their opportunities and left with a 3-1 win. The 2nd Girls were up against Barker 3 and had a very dominant game, finishing the day with a huge 8-0 win. The Junior A Girls continued their undefeated streak against Barker Junior A in their toughest game to date, but still managed to end the game with a 3-1 win. The Junior Blue side had a tight 2-1 loss, while the Junior Gold Girls finished the round with a 2-2 draw.

Our Boys program were playing the majority of their games against St Pius X College. The 1st Boys played in a very physical match with both teams getting quite heated, finishing with a 0-0 draw it was a great result for our boys against one of the powerhouse schools in ISA Boys Football. The 2nd Boys continued their great form in the first half and were leading 2-1 against St Pius at half time but couldn’t manage to keep the lead in the second half. The 15A were well matched against St Pius, finishing with a 2-1 loss, while the 14A team continues to be a force to be reckoned with, finishing the day with a massive 4-0 win. The 14B/13B combined team had a very tough game against St Spyridon 14A, while our 13A side showed some huge improvements from previous weeks and had a thrilling game which resulted in a 4-3 loss. The 13B team played another tough game this week against a strong Oakhill side but continue to compete each week regardless of the opposition.

Best of luck to all of our Football teams this week in Round 6 of the ISA competition. A reminder to check the Redlands Rhino (Redlands Pulse) for the most up to date fixtures for the week ahead.

Our Director of Football, Gerry Gomez is running the Redlands Football Development program on Monday morning at the Junior Campus Oval from 7am-8am. This session is open to all girls and boys Football players in Year 7-9. In the event of wet weather the session will be moved into Dunnet Hall and students will need to bring appropriate shoes for indoor training. We hope to see you there!

Save the Date

Please save the date for the end of season Football presentation which will be held on Tuesday 6 September at Dee Why RSL. Further information will be provided closer to the date.

Hockey

In Round 5 our Hockey players made the trip to Mittagong to play against Oxley College.

It was an early morning for all our gorgeous hockey players this Saturday. We were all a bit sleepy eyed on the bus ride down to Frensham (in Mittagong), but once we got to the field – all rugged up in trackies and scarfs – we got the music pumping in support of the 2nds, who had an awesome game! It was so great to be able to support the other Redlands team, who are improving every week. We started the game strong, and showed great skill and composure throughout, but unfortunately the scoreline didn’t go our way this week, and we went down 4-0. We held out against a strong team for most of the game, and it was only in those last few minutes that they got a big lead. We had some great moments and are looking forward to training hard this week ahead of our game next Saturday! – Ellie Trueman (Year 11).

The 2nds played one of the best matches so far! Winning an amazing 9-0 against Oxley College, all the way at Frensham. Sahara scored an amazing 4 goals followed by Lexi’s 3 goals and Jemima and Noush scoring a goal each. Both coaches, Beth and Yasmin, were very excited and proud of the team, particularly as they were playing without a sub for the first half. Special mention to Ava and Jess for playing half a game each as goalie this week! Shout out to Annie’s dad for driving her out after she missed the bus, in order for the team to have a sub in the second half.

In Round 6 our 1st Girls Hockey team will be playing against Chevalier College and our 2nd Girls Hockey will be playing against Blue Mountains Grammar School. Best of luck to both of our Hockey teams in Round 6!

A reminder to save the date for the End of Season Hockey function which will be held on Thursday 25 August. We can’t wait to see all of our Hockey players and parents there to celebrate the season.

Netball

We had a number of exciting games of Netball this past weekend, with a number of teams seemingly getting their season back on track with some resounding victories. This week saw the mid-point in the ISA Netball season, with a number of changes to the ISA Draw for a few Redlands teams. Redlands Pulse – Netball has the latest version of the draw, please ensure you look over the draw to see if there have been changes to your teams’ Saturday fixtures. The Redlands Rhino will have the most up-to-date weekly fixtures, and it will be uploaded onto Pulse and the Redlands App each Tuesday afternoon.

The Redlands Netball Presentation Dinner has been locked in for Thursday 15 September, more details regarding the location, timings and how to purchase tickets will be sent out shortly.

Rugby

With the sun finally out, Redlands Rugby could officially get the 2022 ISA Rugby Season underway, playing matches against divisional rivals Redfield and also St Augustines.

Having the opportunity to be back on the sidelines was fantastic, with the sense of community and spirit amongst the teams and parents easily identifiable. Our Under 13s started the morning off travelling to Rat Park to play a brilliant match against a strong St Augustines team. Having not had the chance to really train much over the past few weeks, the opening quarter was very much about building combinations and learning their positions. Quickly though, some of the stronger players within the group really started to gel and we started to see the Redlands team begin to put pressure on their opposition. Charlie Reeves, Chase Hindmarsh and Austin Durrant took control of the match, putting points on the board with some skilled kicking, passing and ball carrying. The highlight of the match had to be the long pass from the scrum by Charlie, the quick thinking chip of Chase, the brilliant regather and run by Austin, all finished off by Chase supporting the whole way and getting the final pass for another Redlands try. Special mention must also go to Danny Gordons length of the field effort which brought Redlands back in the game, allowing us to again build pressure on Augies, an Austin Durrant try sealing off a wonderful win.

Other memorable moments for the weekend would be our Under 16s beating the Redfield side again. This is long built rivalry, tracing back to when this Redfield team demolished Redlands 75-5 all the way back in Year 7. Since then, this incredible group have developed as a squad, bringing fresh faces into the team and now sit again, top of the table, having crushed Redfield for the second consecutive year.

Lastly, it was fantastic for our Redlands Rugby Captain for 2022, Hugh Sellar, to be able to lead out his squad finally. Whilst the 1st XV suffered a disappointing loss, the efforts put in by the squad were tremendous, with Hugh leading the charge as always. Look for this group to continue to build, especially leading into a tough match this weekend against Chevalier College.

Snowsports

Please see the Snowsports page for all the most up to date information regarding the 2022 Snowsports season.

Tennis

We had some close ISA matches over the weekend, but our Firsts and Seconds were able to achieve a solid win against opposing school St Patrick’s College! Team Green in the Internal Competition also had a close win against Team Red (down to a tiebreaker!) – securing their place in tied second on the leaderboard. The Internal Competition Results will be sent out for all players to access and keep track of their standings. We are very happy with the progress these new students are showing in terms of technique and matchplay.

A reminder for Round 6 (4 June) this weekend:

  • Please submit your team roster to the Google form before Wednesday 12pm
  • If you are unable to attend Saturday’s competition, please email Caitlin Wong by no later than 12pm on Friday. Attendance is mandatory otherwise and particularly important for ISA players as this competition has very strict guidelines.
  • Please check the draw and playing pairs list to see when/where/who you are playing.
  • Students need to arrive at the venue at least 15 minutes before start time.
  • For any questions, please email Caitlin Wong.

Wishing all players good luck for this weekend’s competition!

Waterpolo

With only two rounds to go before the Senior Competition enters the finals, both the Boys and Girls teams will be looking to build some momentum for the last few weeks. With all three teams still with a chance to play finals it will be great to get all players there on Friday night. The Inters are continuing to improve with each week, with the girls taking strides in both their ball movement and defensive tactics, with two rounds to go before they head into the mid-season break, both the Inter Boys & Inter Girls will be looking to finish the term strongly.

Fitness Centre

The Fitness Centre is the perfect space to develop speed, fundamental movements and also power. All students can access the morning sessions which run Monday to Friday start promptly at 6:30am. We have had a great number of students attending the sessions and look forward to welcoming more interested students over the coming weeks!

Students are reminded to bring with them the following.

  • A water bottle
  • Towel
  • Redlands PE / Sports Uniform

Drama and Theatre

Drama and Theatre is a space where students can not only collaborate with their friends in a safe and supportive environment but is also where students learn crucial life skills that are necessary for future professions and industries such as:

Confidence – Being able to perform/speak in front of an audience is an important skill for the future. Think of leaders briefing a team, pitching a business idea or running a workshop – most jobs require you to do something like this

Creative thinking – How can you approach an idea in a way that hasn’t been targeted? Creativity leads to innovation

Critical thinking and problem solving – Performing from the perspective of different characters help develop empathy. It helps to analyse and understand things from multiple angles

I have seen this run true over the last few weeks as Year 12 IB Theatre and HSC Drama students prepare for their solo performance assessment. A lot of these students have been a part of this program since their junior skill, and to see how much they have grown is a true pleasure. We wish them all the best of luck.

Gala Arts

Last Friday the Finalists for Gala Arts 2022 were announced. Congratulations to all those who are involved. Excitingly, we are now opening submissions for the Gala Arts Photography section. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to FoM Treasurer Lisa Connors
It will be a casual affair so please pop in and say hello if you can.

Senior Vocal Competition Finals – Next Friday 10 June

We are thrilled to announce that our judge for 2022 will be the ARIA-nominated, indie-soul icon Meg Mac. Just a week before her headline performance at the Sydney Opera House, we’re delighted she could pop by Redlands to lend her ear and talents to discern the winners of this years Senior Vocal Competition finals!

Due to the large volume of finalists in this year’s Senior Vocal Competition, the first division will start at 5.30pm. Due to room size limitations, attendance is limited to friends and families of competitors in their respective sections.  Please note that the session times are guides only and indicate the earliest possible start time for the division. As seats are not allocated, ticket-holders are advised to arrive with plenty of time ahead of their respective session. Please also ensure you bring a face-mask to assist us in managing community wellbeing.

DIVISION ONE (YRS 7 + 8) – 5.30pm
DIVISION TWO (YRS 9 + 10) – 6.30pm
DIVISION THREE (YRS 11 + 12) – 8.00pm
