Issue 16 2018 - 31 May 2018

From the Principal

Last Saturday I enjoyed the beautiful sunshine and watched our Football teams playing at Macquarie Playing Fields against opponents from several schools. The Boys’ First Eleven were pitted against possibly the strongest team in Division 1, St Pius. Winning the Division 2 title last season has lifted our Firsts back into the very strong and competitive Division 1 of the ISA competition. The game was played at a cracking pace from the start right through to the final whistle. The skills and commitment of both teams was a wonderful spectacle for spectators and for some of our younger players to watch and, for those younger players, to aspire to. Exceptional fitness, great tactical awareness and fine ball control meant both goalkeepers had a busy time. 2-2 at half time meant the game was still for either to win. It was not until the third quarter of time that St Pius scored a third goal; what was wonderful to see was that our players did not drop their heads but continued to press forward to get shots on target, but could not pierce the strong opposition defence. Pushing forward relentlessly to score an equaliser for at least a draw as time ticked by, meant taking risks at the back, and sadly that led in the final few minutes for two break-away goals to go against us to leave a score-line that did not really reflect the effort, skills and courage of our team. But they will continue to improve, as they play other quality teams in this top Division. We wish them all the best for their future matches. They are doing themselves and their school proud. That is the spirit which we want to see from all teams who play for Redlands.

Congratulations to our Junior School Cross Country athletes who this week won the Division 1 HICES trophy for the 3rd year in succession (!) and to the Secondary School athletes who competed at the ISA Cross Country, providing our best results for some years with the Junior Girls finishing 1st and our Girls teams coming 2nd overall and with our Senior Boys finishing 1st for the first time ever! Thank you to all our Athletics coaches who develop both skills and attitude in our athletes.

Gala Arts is on at The Concourse Chatswood and I am looking forward to another spectacular evening which will showcase the talent among the Secondary School across the Performing Arts. Next week is another important week in the Redlands calendar with Redlands Heritage Week, which includes an annual Platinum Luncheon for Redlanders who graduated 50 or more years ago, and which ends on Friday with our Foundation Day Service, as the School turns 134 this year.

Annual Giving Thank You

As we approach the end of the financial year, I would like to acknowledge and thank all the families who have made a donation to our Building Fund, Scholarship Fund or Library Fund this year. We are very fortunate at Redlands to have a long history of community support for our School through volunteering, corporate ties and financial donations.

Our current facilities are enjoyed by our students and staff, thanks to the generous support of both current and previous generations of families. We would greatly appreciate any families who have not already done so to support us in our journey. All donations are tax deductible. For further details, please see the Foundation section of Note Day or contact our Director of Development, Mrs Dana Casimaty on 9968 9858 or dcasimaty@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Innovative Design Needs Your Support

Thank you to all the Redlands families who have made a donation to the School in this financial year. As the construction of the New Learning Hub on the Senior Campus progresses, we are seeking support for the final fit outs and equipment for the Innovative Design faculty, including 3D printers and laser cutters.  We are very fortunate at Redlands that we have a community which supports the School so generously, and any donations will be greatly appreciated.

“This equipment allows our students to learn about real-life experiences and applications for a range of technologies. At Redlands, students are exposed to programming and coding which prepares them well for their next stage of education. Students also become more adaptable and flexible in developing their skills and critical thinking to cope with rapid changes in technological development.”

Alannah Nastase, Head of Innovative Design

Event

Head of Secondary School

HSC or IB?

On Wednesday evening we held our Yr 10 into Yr 11 Subject Information Evening. This event was an opportunity for parents and students to hear from Secondary School leaders, Subject Coordinators and individual teachers about the various courses and subjects available to students in Yrs 11 and 12. At Redlands, we are very fortunate that our students have the choice of either enrolling in the Higher School Certificate or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme for their final two years of study. While an increasing number of schools are exploring the IB as an option of study for their senior students, at Redlands the IB is just “part of what we do” as we were the first school in Sydney to offer the IB 30 years ago.

We realise that students and parents are having many conversations about whether the HSC or the IB is the best course for them. While Yr 10 students will be making this choice over the next few weeks, we thought it would be beneficial for parents in Yrs 7-9 to hear some of the messages we are sharing with Yr 10 families so they have the best information in the lead up to senior studies.

Firstly, the IBDP and HSC are both highly regarded programs of study that allow students to achieve academic success and their own academic “personal bests” which will best prepare them for their next stage if life after Secondary School. However, some of the key differences between the two programs are the following:

  • The HSC is the leaving certificate for all students in NSW who complete Secondary School. The HSC caters to a wide range of students who use their degree for a variety of post-school opportunities. While the majority of students use the HSC to gain an ATAR which will allow them direct entry into undergraduate university programs, the HSC also caters for students who are looking for entry into TAFE programs or are moving directly into the workforce. The IBDP is an international program studied by approximately 150,000 students worldwide. It is a mission-based program which focuses on preparing students for direct entry into undergraduate university programs.
  • The HSC is comprised of two separate “one year” courses. The Preliminary HSC course actually covers the first three terms of Yr 11 while the HSC course covers Term 4 of Yr 11 and the first three terms of Yr 12. The IBDP is a two year course covering both Yrs 11 and 12.
  • The HSC allows for more specialisation as the only mandatory course is English. The IBDP is a more generalist program as students have to choose subjects in six different “groups” (including an additional language) as well as complete other compulsory “core” elements.

In addition, there are some myths and misconceptions that we also debunked with Yr 10 parents and students on Wednesday evening. Some of these are:

  • “I can only achieve academic success in one program.” Students can achieve academic success and their academic “personal bests” in either the HSC or the IB.
  • “The School preferences one program over the other.” In terms of staffing, scheduling or other structures, Redlands does not preference one program over the other.”
  • “I need to stop doing cocurricular activities in Yrs 11 and 12 to perform well academically.” Redlands strongly believes in the values of a holistic education and we believe it is best for students to continue to pursue their cocurricular interests and passions in Yrs 11 and 12.”
  • “If I take the HSC I cannot apply for overseas universities.” While the IB is studied more widely around the world and is more known and recognised internationally, many students at Redlands and across NSW who complete the HSC are still able to apply for and successfully gain enrolment in overseas universities.
  • “I should only choose specific subjects because they scale well.” We strongly recommend students choose subjects they feel they are good at or enjoy.”

We encourage Yr 10 students and parents, as well as students and parents from Yrs 7-9 to speak to Dean of Studies, Mr Randall, Dean of IB, Mr Taylor, Subject Coordinators, teachers and Tutors if they have any further questions.

ISA Cross Country

Yesterday our Cross Country runners were tremendously successful at the ISA Cross Country Championships. Our Junior Girls team finished first and, for the first time in our history, our Senior Boys team finished first. Overall our girls finished second and our boys finished third. Individually, Olivia Vigneault (Yr 8) won the U14 Girls race and Emma Mahon (Yr 9) won the U15 Girls race, while Olivia Donoghue (Yr 9) finished 3rd in the U15 Girls race. (A more complete summary of results will be included in next week’s Note Day.) Congratulations to all of the runners and coaches on these outstanding results!

Paul Dillon

On Tuesday, we were very fortunate to once again have Paul Dillon speak to students in Yrs 10, 11 and 12 as part of our Pastoral Care and wellbeing program. Paul is the Director and Founder of Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia (DARTA) and has been a leader in the area of drug and alcohol education for the past 25 years. He works with many school communities across the country to ensure that they have access to good quality information and best practice drug and alcohol education. His talks at Redlands are always informative and well-received by the students.

Paul will also be holding a parent seminar Thursday 14 June from 6.00-7.30pm on Adolescents and Risk-Taking entitled, “Why do teens do the things they do and what can you do about it?”. This talk will have a different focus from last year’s talk to parents which received much favourable feedback. A letter will be sent out with further information on this seminar and we strongly encourage parents to attend.

Gala Arts

Tomorrow evening is Gala Arts at The Concourse, Chatswood from 6.30pm. Gala Arts is our annual Performing Arts festival, showcasing the plethora of talents of the diverse Redlands student body from Yrs 7 to 12 across the categories of vocal, theatre, instrumental and dance. Personally, I cannot wait to see many of our creative and performing arts students shine on stage in this friendly House competition and wish staff and students all the best for tomorrow night.

English

Poppi Kent, who is in Yr 11, should feel justifiably proud that she will be receiving a Merit Certificate for the story she submitted for the 2018 Nan Manefield Young Writers’ Award, which is run annually by the Stanton Library. The Mayor will be presenting the award next week. Poppi’s story, The Voices in My Head , is a sensitive portrayal of a young woman struggling to forge an identity independent of the constraints imposed upon her by society. Poppi’s impressive creation of a sustained narrative voice is one of the striking aspects of this work, as is her deft, and, at times, amusing, characterisation of Amy, her protagonist.

Debating

Congratulations to the Yr 10 ISDA team for their big Octos win. They will be competing against PLC Croydon in the Quarter Finals this week. All the best Yr 10!

We had two closely fought FED Semi Finals last week and unfortunately neither team made it to the Grand Final this term. A special mention to the Yr 8B team whose loss was contentious to the audience around.

Redlands is hosting the FED Grand Final this week. All FED debaters are expected to attend this day. Students will be expected to watch/participate in the Grand Final debates and also help with setting up rooms, chairing, time keeping and helping visitors find their way around the school. Gala Arts participants are excused from this commitment. Students have been emailed sign-in and sign-out times. The Redlands community is invited to come in and watch one of the high calibre debates. There will be eight debates held concurrently at 7pm on the night.

Service

Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal

Bright and early on Sunday last weekend, over 76 Yr 11 students participated in the Red Shield Appeal Door Knock covering the area around our school. At the start of the morning we were joined by The Honorable Trent Zimmerman, Federal Member for North Sydney. Six of our Yr 12 students, ably led by Hugh Smylie and Nono Nakamura, our Service Captains, also managed the counting-house processes at the conclusion of the day, reconciling receipts issued with donations collected. The total amount collected on behalf for the Salvation Army was $5,011.00.

Tanzania

The students traveling to Tanzania this coming holidays have completed all of the fundraising for their Service projects. They have raised an impressive $16,000 towards a range of construction projects they will undertake as part of their expedition. They are now in the final stages of preparations for departure, including getting shots, organising gear and fine tuning their Swahili language skills.

Busking for Breast Cancer

As you may be aware, on Saturday 23 June Redlands will be celebrating our vibrant community with the Redlands@Home round of sports at Macquarie. As part of the fundraising activities on the day we are calling for students and parents with some musical talent to volunteer half an hour to add some music to the day. We are looking to fill busking slots with all donated funds going to the Breast Cancer Network Australia. Also Redlands Community Support T-Shirts ($20) and Redlands Pink Caps ($15) are available from the Uniform Shop.

Community

Thank you to Nathaniel Wong who assisted one of our Yr 7 students who tripped on some stairs. Our School Nurse, Ms Macken, was most impressed with his calm and considerate help.

Careers and Universities

In Pastoral Care over the past week, Ms Salier offered a presentation to each Tutor Group on bonus points and early entry schemes. This week was also packed with university visits from EHL Hospitality School, Switzerland (number 1 in the world), UTS and Monash universities. Next week we will have visits from St Hilda’s College, Melbourne University and UBC Canada. Students are encouraged to check their emails from Ms Salier for further information.

Formal

There has been a boom in ticket sales and it looks as though every student in the cohort will be attending to celebrate the friendships they have developed over their time at Redlands. On the last day of this term, students are permitted to leave at lunch time in order to prepare for the event. Parents are encouraged to attend pre-dinner cocktails in the foyer and will not need to purchase tickets for themselves. We look forward to seeing you all there.

Gala Arts

Yr 12 students have been feverishly preparing for the showcase item of Gala Arts. The finale will no doubt be one to remember and we are looking forward to seeing them take to the stage as a Year Group.

Paul Dillon

On Tuesday Paul Dillon presented to Yr 12 for the final time. He discussed safe driving , drugs and alcohol. As always he is a highly engaging presenter and our students appreciated his down to earth candour. Parents are invited to attend his Parent Workshop on Thursday 14 June (Week 7) in Redlands Hall at 6pm.

Paul Dillon Talk

Earlier this week, Paul Dillon, a very well-known and respected expert on topics relating to student health and wellbeing, gave an engaging talk to our Yr 11 cohort on a range of topics, including driving, alcohol and drugs. This is the second time that he has spoken to Yr 11s since last year and his talks are always well received by the students. I would encourage parents to chat with their child about these topics at a suitable time.

Gala Arts

Gala Arts is one of my favourite school events. This is the one night of the year in which students’ hidden talents are revealed to the larger school community, and we get a sense of the richness of their extracurricular lives. Each year, the line-up of talent is truly outstanding and includes theatre, dance, vocal and instrumental categories. Every performance will bring a particular Redlands flavour of flair and spectacle to a terrific and varied evening. Good luck to all the Yr 11 students involved in this year’s Gala Arts event this Friday.

Red Shield Appeal

Last Sunday morning, 76 students demonstrated their generosity of spirit by donating their time to the Red Shield Appeal drive to raise funds for the Salvation Army. This involves the very daunting task of knocking on doors to seek donations. The enthusiasm of students in putting together for this event is really impressive. Their efforts were rewarded with a huge taking – nearly $5000 raised over a two hour period! We are so proud of our boys and girls for this colossal effort and great success.

Correction—Updated Date for Yr 11 Meningococcal Vaccinations

Year 10

Industry Day

Yr 10 had an exciting and informative day last Friday as they ventured to a number of industries across Sydney. Industry Day is an opportunity that brings students to a workplace to learn more about a company and its industry, observe employees in their normal work routines, and ask questions of employees. During the tour, employees can demonstrate the equipment and technology they use on an everyday basis while highlighting the core skills and knowledge they apply in their jobs. More than a simple field trip or site visit, a workplace tour is designed and structured to meet specific learning outcomes, be educationally rich, and build awareness of the business, it’s industry sector, its role in the economy, and the career options it provides.

Paul Dillon

Paul Dillon presented an accessible and engaging information session to the Yr 10 cohort on Tuesday. Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia (DARTA) aims to provide education and training expertise as well as high quality research assistance on a wide range of alcohol and other drug issues. Additional information about the presentation or the issues discussed they can be found here.

Vaccinations

Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program. Yr 10 Meningococcal vaccinations will take place on 19 June. To consent to the vaccination of their child, parents/guardians are advised to:

    • read all the information provided in the parent information kit
    • complete the consent form, including signing their name next to the vaccine/s they would like their child to receive
    • return the completed consent form to their child’s Tutor or Year Advisor by Monday 4 June
    • ensure that their child eats breakfast on the day of the school vaccination clinic.
Information Evening

The Yr 10 information evening was held last night. This was an informative night for both parents and students. These are important choices and we urge parents to discuss the options available to their child thoroughly with them and consider their own child’s particular strengths in determining which curriculum and which subjects they should choose.

Yr 10 Parent Teacher Night

Yr 10 Parent Teacher Night is taking place next Wednesday 6 June. If parents are unable to attend they can contact me or the classroom teacher to organise an alternative meeting time or phone conversation. Mrs Salier, our Careers Advisor, will also be available on this evening to discuss university admissions and pre-requisite subjects if needed.

Year 9

Yr 9 Commerce Market Day

The Yr 9 Market Day was held last Thursday  24 May, under the Gym. Lunchtime was a buzz with students from all Year Groups keen to try the wares of our Yr 9 students. This was certainly a highlight for our Year Group and we were all impressed with their entrepreneurial endeavours and sales skills. The day proved a wonderful opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and skills from their current Commerce topic of Running a Business. All students contributed an equity investment into their business and charged nominal operating costs (these funds were donated to the Redlands Scholarship Fund). Due to students’ sound planning, they recouped their initial investment and raised profits which will be distributed charitable causes chosen by our students.

Pink Sock Day

On Saturday 23 June (end of Week 8), Redlands will be hosting Pink Sock Day at Macquarie University in support of the Breast Cancer Network. Most sporting teams will be playing their games at Macquarie University on this day. Students are encouraged to support this initiative by donning pick socks. It is sure to be a wonderful community event with cake stalls and a barbeque.

School Assessments

With the school assessment season upon us for Semester 1, it is perhaps timely to check in with your son or daughter to see how they are travelling in terms of their wellbeing. Although students may not readily discuss their concerns around these assessments, we ask that parents be cognisant of the perceived or actual pressures that students may feel around this assessments. At Redlands we encourage students to do their best whilst maintaining clear perspective around the importance of these assessment procedures. Should you feel that your child is needing extra support at this time please do not hesitate to be in contact.

Study Hall in Roseby Library

For students seeking a quiet space to work together with access to teaching staff, the school is now running Study Sessions in the Roseby Library. These sessions occur on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 7.30- 8.15am. This is informal in the sense that students can ‘drop in’ if and when this is needed.

Year 8

Pastoral Care

For the remainder of this term, the focus of Tutor Time will be based on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. Being a teenager is both a wonderful and challenging period where tough issues and life-changing decisions have to be made, and that’s where the seven habits of highly effective teenagers come into play. Throughout the term, students will be discussing how they can become more independent and effective by following seven basic habits. The habits range from being proactive in every aspect of one’s life, to planning and prioritising one’s daily life and responsibilities.

Next week begins our celebrations of Heritage Week at Redlands, acknowledging the history and foundations of the School. If you are new to the school and/or aren’t aware of our interesting history, please do visit the History page on our website. A variety of events and activities are scheduled for Yr 8 students next week including our Heritage Week Assembly and the Foundation Day Service to be held in Redlands Hall for students on Friday.

Uniforms

Tutors are conducting regular uniform checks, and we have asked students to remedy any uniform problems immediately. Some boys will need their hair cut, and quite a number of girls will need their hems lowered or new skirts procured.

Student Achievements

This week saw a number of our students compete at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre in the ISA Cross Country Carnival. Congratulations to the following students who made the Redlands ISA Team, and we wish them well: Lauren Smith, Louise Colin, Callie Forest, Olivia Vigneault, Evie Farrell, Ella Palmet, Elizabeth Holtheuer, Ashani Gupta, Ruby Kelly, Rex Brook, Lockie Taylor, Oliver Garrett, Max Rawlinson and Michael Natilli. Congratulations on your selection!

Gala Arts

Gala Arts is on Friday night, 1 June. This is such a wonderful celebration of diversity, talent and outstanding entertainment. We congratulate all students on their auditions, as well as performances on the evening.

Absences

Just a reminder on processes for absences and approved leave. Please email the school as soon as possible if your child is sick and unable to attend school that day. Please note that this is a dedicated absence email address only – any emails sent to this address will not be responded to. If a student is absent from school for any longer than two days, please supply a doctor’s certificate. No medical appointments should be made during school hours, including Thursday afternoon Sport. This obviously does not include medical emergencies. Requests for approved leave should be made in writing to Mr Sean Corcoran. Would you please cc me in this correspondence as well.

News
  • Best of luck to all students involved in Gala Arts this Friday. Gala Arts is a wonderful event which recognises talent across the school and a highlight of the Redlands calendar. There may still be a scattering of tickets available (see the Drama section of Note Day for more information). If you are unable to attend this year – this event should be a priority for 2019!
  • Congratulations to all students for tackling the last few weeks of heavy assessment with focus and determination. We have been very impressed with their time management and approach to learning. Assessment schedules should start to lighten in the coming weeks (phew!) This will provide much needed time to regather, take the foot off the accelerator a little and reflect on good practice (What did students do well? What could they change next time they approach assessment?).
  • On Monday students attended the Museum at the University of Sydney. Staff reported exceptional engagement and behaviour – explaining that the day was insightful. Well done Yr 7!
  • Week 6 is Heritage Week. Yr 7 will be visited by Redlands Archives who will be sharing stories about the coeducational history of the school.
  • Included for your enjoyment are some happy snaps from Peer Support in Week 4.
Pastoral Program

This week students engaged in two conversations with their Tutor Group. Conversations have explored self-awareness and self-esteem. Self-awareness encompasses identity, values, desires and goals. More vulnerable students often experience low self-esteem. This means that they believe that they are not worthwhile, they cannot do very much or be successful and that they are not like, loved or valued. They may seek ways to feel better about themselves which involve putting others down or reinforce this negativity by living up to their own expectations. Objectives of conversations this week include:

  • To identify and celebrate histories, competencies and qualities.
  • To explore areas of personal change and development.
  • To acknowledge and develop personal strengths and the strengths of others.
Study Skills – What do students do when they get a disappointing assignment mark?

We all have times when we think we have done brilliantly then get an assignment back and are really disappointed instead. Students could just feel really bad, or they could try these steps:

Review and Understand

The first step is to work through the feedback and work out what went wrong.

  • Did they not meet the criteria?
  • What feedback was given from the teacher?
  • Do they understand the feedback?
  • Can they work out why they got their mark?

If they don’t understand why they got the mark they did, it is ESSENTIAL they ask their teacher for further clarification. Otherwise they will keep making the same mistakes.

Challenge or Accept

Once students understand what the issue was, they can either accept it, or challenge it. If students feel now that the mark was actually fair enough, then it is time to move on. There is no point beating themselves up anymore about a disappointing mark. Instead students need to treat this as a learning process. The people who are most successful in life don’t let their mistakes get them down, they see them as a learning opportunity where they can improve and make sure it doesn’t happen again. However, if students really think the mark was unfair and the assessment met all of the criteria, they can talk to their teacher and politely explain their point of view and ask if they would reconsider the mark.

Learn and Change

The only way to improve is to work out what could be changed about the assessment then try and fix it. Consider, if they were to re-do part of the work what exactly would they change? Another good thing students can do is to ask to see other students’ work who received top grades for their assignments – to evaluate what was missing in their work or how they could improve their work next time. It would also be a great idea for their next assignment to show the teacher a plan, or a draft early on, explaining how they think they’ve met the criteria and seek feedback well before handing it in.

The da Vinci Decathlon

Last Thursday over 1100 students from across the State in Yrs 5 and 6 participated in the annual Knox Grammar NSW da Vinci Decathlon. The Decathlon celebrates the academic gifts of young people by providing a stimulating and challenging competition run in the spirit of an Olympic Decathlon. Students competed in teams of eight across ten disciplines: Engineering, Mathematics and Chess, Code Breaking, Art and Poetry, Science, English, Ideation, Creative Producers, Cartography and General Knowledge.

With the day divided into three sessions and many tasks running concurrently, both the Redlands Yrs 5 and 6 teams demonstrated excellent collaboration and took a group approach to problem solving. With more than 50 teams in each age group, the Yr 5 team achieved noteworthy results in English (5th), Code Breaking (8th) and Cartography (8th). The Yr 6 team are to be highly commended for achieving 1st place in the General Knowledge section of the competition. Well done and congratulations to all participating students and my thanks are also extended to Mrs Hibbert and Mrs Rugg, who prepared and accompanied the students.

Yr 5 – Chloe Bailey, Piper Bradley, Iona Gait, Remie Gibbs, Krishna Gupta, Michael Havryk, Liam Petersen, Callum Zhu

Yr 6 – Mischa Barac, Arya Gapaillard, Ahnu Guan, Rafferty Heard, Benjamin Palmet, Conor Petersen, Mitchell Travers-Wolf and Melinda Wright

Redlands Cross Country Team Success

On Tuesday morning our Redlands Cross Country team set off in darkness for Orange to compete in this year’s HICES Cross Country Carnival, competing against other coed independent schools from across the State. With over forty of our Junior School girls and boys running, the event was certainly one that needed a combined team effort and our team ran with great spirit and determination, which resulted in them defending the Division 1 Shield again, coming 1st overall for the third year running.

We are very proud of all of the girls and boys who competed and I also extend my gratitude to our many parent supporters who made the long journey out to Orange to support the children. We look forward to celebrating their achievements in our next Junior School assembly.

AFL State Champions

We were delighted to hear of the success of Yr 6 students, Isaac Brooks and Gianmarco Pradel, who were part of the Combined Independent Schools of NSW team in last week’s State competition. The boys competed against the best of the State over the course of the week in Bateman’s Bay and their team gelled superbly to emerge victorious as State Champions for 2018. Both boys played important roles in their team and then travelled back on Friday for Isaac to compete for the Chess team on Friday afternoon and then both boys pulled on the Redlands AFL jersey on Saturday morning to play with their school mates again.

Yr 3 Camp

As I shared briefly last week, I had the pleasure of joining Yr 3 on Camp last week, a wonderful experience and opportunity for them to enjoy time together and create memories together. With perfect weather, the outdoors environment certainly helped to facilitate some engaging experiential learning for students and many also commented on making new friendships too; one of our hopes for our camp program.

As our Junior School camps conclude for 2018, I acknowledge the immense preparation and student care on all four camps, which has provided every students with some wonderful memories.

You Can Sit with Me – Friday 1 June

Tomorrow, the Junior Campus is encouraged to wear a touch of yellow as part of the You Can Sit with Me inclusivity and kindness campaign, which our Junior School students were given more information about in our assembly. Our Junior Campus buddies will also enjoy sitting with each other and having lunch together.

Special Visitors

To complement Get Caught Reading Month, Yr 2 classes invited some very special guests to read to their students. Thank you to Mr Latimer, Mr Guha, Ms Francis, Mrs McPhillips and Yr 5 buddies from the Junior School, who gave their time to read and interact with Prep students. Getting to know the Junior School teachers and students is the beginning of the transition from Prep to Junior School. I know the Yr 2 students thoroughly enjoyed time increasing their literacy knowledge with the wider school community.

You Can Sit With Me

This Friday 1 June, Junior Campus will be joining together with their buddies at lunch time to observe You Can Sit With Me day. You Can Sit With Me reminds everyone in our school that we welcome anyone to sit with us regardless of interests, ability and age. We encourage all students to wear a touch of yellow on this day. If you are interested in buying a pencil or bag tag, please visit their website. All proceeds from the sale of items go to the Literacy and Numeracy Foundation.

Too Sick for School

As the colder weather approaches, so do many bugs and illnesses. It’s often hard to know whether to send your child to school or let them stay home to recover, especially when that means an adult needs to cancel work or alter a busy schedule.

Recently, some children have been sent to school unwell and have then presented as sick early in the school day. For safety’s sake and the wellbeing of other students and staff, if your child seems unwell please keep them home from school and if needed, seek medical advice.

Please ensure that your contact and emergency details are up to date so that we can contact you immediately, if necessary. Children often become even more distressed when they are sick and have to wait long periods of time before being collected.

Lost Property

There seems to be an accumulation of lost items in the Lost Property box outside the Prep Office. Please check the box if you have an item missing. To avoid items being misplaced, could you please make sure everything brought to school is clearly named. Thank you.

Girls’ Uniform Trial

As part of ongoing consultation with students and parents regarding the School uniform, we are trialling girls’ trousers this Winter, Terms 2 and 3. The School has recently sourced smaller sizes for Prep students. If you are interested in trousers for the Winter for your daughter, please visit the Uniform Shop. There are black socks available to purchase to wear with the navy trousers.

Yr 2 Camp Parent Information Session

Thank you to everyone who attended the Yr 2 Camp Information Session on Wednesday 30 May. If you were unable to attend the session, all information, including all questions and answers will be made available on the Yr 2 section of Redlands Pulse. A significant message overall from presenters was that if you have any concerns about the camp in September, to discuss these with the class teacher early, so any adjustments or awareness can be addressed accordingly.

New Learning Hub Appeal

Work is progressing well on the new state of the art educational facilities and open spaces on the Senior Campus which are due to be completed mid-2019. Thank you to those Early Childhood families who have kindly donated to secure a Family Plaque or made a donation towards the Building Fund (all donations are tax deductible). There is still some availability if you would like your family’s name on the Legacy Board which will be placed in the foyer of the New Learning Hub.  For more information please visit the website or contact Dana Casimaty, Director of Development, 9968 9858.

Redlands House/Transition Gold

Front Door at Redlands House Cremorne

The front door to the Preschool is manned from 8.00-8.45am each morning and each afternoon from 2.30-2.45pm. As all parents are aware, it is a very busy time for the staff to greet parents, children and ensure that the door is completely monitored to prevent any quick getaways or planned escapes by children who are searching for their caregivers in the afternoon, as soon as the first parents arrive.

The staff would like to ask the parents to reiterate with their children that in the morning they are to stay in the playground with their teachers until the bell has gone. Parents are to drop the children to the playground and please ensure they do not follow them into the corridor. Staff are always on hand to assist with separation. In the afternoon, the children are to stay in the classroom until their parents arrive. When children are in the corridor with their parents, it is imperative that your duty of care to supervise your child comes into play in partnership with our staff supervision. This also includes the need to have parents ensure that the gate and the door of the Preschool are closed at all times.

Storypark

We encourage all families to become involved in our online portfolio communication opportunities on Storypark. Sharing background information and family events, celebrations or discoveries can be made through posting on your child’s site. The teachers and/or group can then share at school with your child. The magic of a trip to a farm or a visit from a special person are two examples of many highlights shared last term through this forum. This year we would like to encourage parents to add knowledge on topics and events that the teachers post to enhance our planning and programming, aiming for a collaborative approach between Preschool and home.

Colder Weather

Now that the weather has changed and the days are becoming colder, please ensure your child has adequate clothing for outdoor play. We do encourage the children to play in the outdoor environment in all weather conditions, so it is important that they have appropriate clothing. We have raincoats and gumboots for the children to wear at Redlands on wet days, but they need to have a nice, warm layer underneath.

July Vacation Care Program

In order to book your child into the Redlands House July Vacation Care Program please visit the Carebookings website and enter the booking code 38J8G. The online system opens on Monday 4 June at 10.30am. Please be aware if there are days that the numbers of students do not reach a required minimum, then this service will run from the Junior Campus area. Families of those students will be notified of this change of venue when numbers have been finalised.

Junior Parent/Teacher Conferences

Parent/teacher/student interviews will be held for Redlands House Juniors between Tuesday 12 and Monday 18 June. Bookings will open at 8.30am on Friday 1 June. You will be able to book interviews at times that suit you best. Go to www.schoolinterviews.com.au and follow these instructions:

Enter school event code 26yby
Choose teachers
Choose times

When you click finish, your interview timetable will be emailed to you automatically – check your junk mail folder if you do not receive your email. You can return to www.schoolinterviews.com.au at any time and change your interviews until bookings close.

For parents who don’t have access to the internet at home, at work, at a friend’s house or on their phones, please send a note to school with the approximate times you require or phone the School on 9968 9848. Interviews are strictly 20 mins and spaces are limited. If you require more time, please contact your teacher directly to make alternative arrangements. Parents can change their interview bookings, any time prior to the closing date, by re-visiting the www.schoolinterviews.com.au website, and using the event code. Remember to use the same name and email address you used when you made your original booking. Parents wishing to change their interview times after the closing date should contact their child’s teacher.

Head of Sport

Sport in School is About Developing Better People not Better Results

The world over we are seeing a decline in what can be deemed as “traditional” competitive sports. In Australia less kids are now competing in Swimming, Rugby and Cricket, sports which were once giants in the Australian sporting landscape. This phenomenon is not isolated to Australia as in New Zealand there are decreases in the number of children playing Rugby, in Canada a reduction in Ice Hockey participation and in the USA, evidence suggests a sharp decline in the number of children playing Baseball, their national pastime. So, what is causing this decline within competitive sports?

Firstly, the sports are not to blame. It is the shift in approach to coaching, mentoring and delivering these sports to students which has changed. In many cases today, we have begun to focus too much on youth sports as a talent and performance driven pathway, as opposed to a critical component of childhood and adolescence. Sport in schools is about character education, ensuring young people are exposed to environments and experiences that help them become better people and better students. The opportunity to develop resilience, perseverance and commitment are life skills which stand as the most important aspect of youth sport, not the wins or losses of a team. Sport in schools, at the most basic level, is about education and learning above all else.

The pressure from sports organisations and professional sporting bodies to continue to look for and develop “talent” has pervaded our school’s sports system. In many cases, sports programs are directed towards a pathway of physical development and skill in a pursuit of winning records. This has in turn led to a focus on what is easily measurable when trying to identify talent: solely results and physical attributes. I am not saying there is anything wrong with skill development; in fact, if we were not developing physical skills, we would not be doing our students justice. What I am proposing is for skills development to move beyond physical attributes of a sport and towards the “softer” more personable skills required for success in the future. How well does a student deal with loss; how do they show humility in victory? How committed are students to a cause greater than themselves? How respectful are they towards their teammates, opposition and the ‘privilege’ of playing sport?

In order to achieve these standards we require a combination of three parties working together – parents, students and coaches. Parents are asked to gently encourage and provide positive reinforcement regardless of result. Students learn to understand responsibility and commitment and coaches use every opportunity within their respective sports as positive learning experiences, whilst at the same time motivating students to stay engaged with sport through their lifespan.

These are not easy tasks. As a school we are accutely aware of this and are looking at ways to move forward in the best possible way.

Athletics

Athletics training will begin on Friday 1 June from 3.30-5.00pm at Balmoral Oval in partnership with the Mosman Athletics Club. If you are interested in participating in these trainings please see Mr Ellis in the Sports Office to register your interest. More information can be found on Redlands Pulse.

Cross Country

We had a great day yesterday out at the ISA Cross Country. Congratulations to Olivia Vigneault (Yr 8) who was the U14 Girls Champion, Emma Mahon (Yr 9) who was the U15 Girls Champion, Olivia Donoghue (Yr 9) who finished 3rd in the U15 Girls, and Hannah Johns (Yr 12) who finished 3rd in the 18+ Girls. These are some fantastic results for our female athletes.

We also walked away with the Junior Girls Divisional Championship (for the second year running) and for the first time in ISA Cross Country history, we took the Senior Boys Divisional Championship.

We will have a full recap of the day in next week’s Note Day.

Football

Congratulations to Kate Stanbridge, Sydney Stuckman, Joh Sawa and Daniel Knight for their selection into the ISA teams who competed in the NSWCIS championships on Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 May. Well done to Kate Stanbridge who was selected into the NSWCIS squad.

Hockey

Last weekend saw some tight games of Hockey played by our 1sts and 3rds while the 2nds girls took advantage of a bye round. The 3rds travelled to Blue Mountains Grammar School for their game where the 0-3 loss score line didn’t reflect the effort by the girls. Special mentions should go to Lucy Horton, Jazmin Evans and Jessica Travers-Wolf for their individual outstanding games.

The 1sts played against St Andrews Cathedral School and in a game where SACS were constantly on the offensive, the Redlands girls won the day with a 1-0 win. Yasmin Gupta took advantage of a break to take on the SACS goalkeeper and sneak in the match winner. While the whole team performed remarkably well under pressure in defence, special mention goes to Anna McCormack for her key role in keeping SACS away from the goals.

This weekend will see our 1sts travel to Oxley College for a 9.00am game (please complete online permission for transport) while the 2nds play at 9.45am and the 3rds have a 8.30am game against St Andrews Cathedral School at Ernie Smith Reserve in Moorebank. As always, we ask that students arrive no later than 45 min prior to their game times to ensure that they can adequately prepare for their respective matches.

Netball

Some very close matches over the weekend with a number of Redlands teams coming out victorious. Our Senior 2nds had a great match against Central Coast Grammar School, which has certainly boosted their confidence as they come up against Oakhill this weekend. Our ISA Junior A and B teams both had away wins against both Chevalier and Oxley respectively. Both teams are looking to continue their form with some home games against Central Coast this weekend.

Seeking Expressions of Interest

On Saturday 4 August we would like to take interested players from the Secondary School Netball program (Yrs 7-12) to attend the Giants vs Fever game at the ICC, Darling Harbour with the game starting at 7pm. All players are welcome to attend this game. The cost will be charged to your School account. Tickets are approximately $30 per person. All players are to make their own way to and from the venue. If your daughter(s) would like to attend this excursion, please register your daughter for this event by contacting the Director of Netball Coaching, Annie Stalley, via email astalley@redlands.nsw.edu.au by 13 July.

A reminder about our open Netball skills sessions on Thursday mornings have been moved to Lang Gym (7.00–8.00am). These are open to all Secondary School Netball players and are a great way to get some extra skills sessions in.

Rugby

The Redlands 16s had a resounding win over the weekend with some brilliant running from the backs matched with incredible efforts defensively from the forwards, proving too much for the weaker SACS side. This squad is made up through a combination of our 15s and our current 16s and it was great to see the combinations between the two Year Groups be so strong through the entire match. James Wells set up James Reid for a try along with Guy Salter, Ben Bootes and Alex Phipps caused mayhem across the whole field. There were a few notable highlights from the game. Gus Miller soaring above the SACS winger for a try stands out as one, along with an absolutely perfect line break run from Simon Van Weelde. I do want to highlight the incredible game of Alex Phipps who tackled anything in sight and his ball running for the entire game was devastatingly good. Well done to the 16s and let’s see if they can follow it up this weekend against Redfield.

Tennis

Another strong performance from Redlands ISA Tennis with all four teams recording a win (back to back weekends). Our 1sts team had a very close victory over St Pius (4.5-3.5) at Talus St. The 2nds continued to display some fantastic tennis and were able to comfortably beat their St Pius opposition (7-1). The 3rds had another dominant victory over St Pius winning (6-2). The 4ths produced another good solid win at Cammeray against St Pius (6-2). Well done to all players. Please make sure you check the coming weekend’s fixtures.

IPSHA Sport

There are a few minor changes to IPSHA Yr 3 Football this week. Yr 3 Blue will now play Newington at 8am at Tempe Reserve and Yr 3 Red are now playing against Coogee Prep at Heffron Park – Robey Road Maroubra, (Oval near Des Renford Pool).

CIS AFL Boys – State Champions

Isaac Brooks and Gianmarco Pradel are now NSWPSSA Champions after their CIS team took out a very tense Grand Final in the State Championship gold medal game in Batemans Bay last week. Isaac and Gianmarco join the long list of Redlands NSWCIS Representatives, but only a select few have tasted victory before at this level. Isaac drew particular mention from the coaches for his courage, relentless running and attack on the ball through the whole tournament, especially the gold medal match up against Sydney North. Gianmarco’s clever positioning, superb team first attitude and fearless attack on the ball were a highlight.

HICES Cross Country Champions

Orange is a long way from Sydney and our 42 strong Cross Country team made the trek last week to defend the HICES Division 1 Cross Country Championship and did so in emphatic style. Redlands won their third Cross Country Championships in as many years. There was a great atmosphere and huge amounts of support and encouragement for all of our runners, who battled the challenging hilly and slippery course really strongly. Many of our runners finished top ten to earn themselves a place at the CIS Championships. A full list of our HICES Reps to CIS will be available next week. Congratulations to all of our team members who relished the challenge of being favourites, showed great team spirit, fair play and sportsmanship in retaining the title.

Football

Our Yr 5 C team had a great 1-0 win over Newington Lindfield last weekend at Macquarie University. It was great to see so many girls battling away against the all boy opposition. The Yr 4 Blue team were more dominant in their six goal victory – again  sharing the scoring by gender and players against Shore.

Hockey

Another draw for our amazing Hockey girls. This time 3-3 in a goal scoring feast at Pymble last week. Our team has been gelling together beautifully and last week’s all out attack made for s super exciting and entertaining match against Ravenswood.

Netball

Our netballers looked the part and showed great support for the McGrath Foundation at NSNA’s Pink Round at Willoughby last week. Redlands 13 ground out another nailbiting win getting up 5-4 in their fifth one point margin game this season. Redlands 14 turned the tables on their opposition battling to a 3-3 draw after having gone down to their opposition in Round 1. The Redlands 14 girls are improving with each game and, as they enter their second round of matches against teams, it’s really great to see their improved performances turning into points.

Rugby

As our Rugby boys develop, there is more and more to be impressed with. Last weekend it was our Yr 5 players who showed the way! Oscar D’Almeida, Toby Luce and Joshua Salis really impressed. Oscar and Toby in the forwards where their hard work provided plenty of solid ball for the backs. Hugo Scott made the most of his opportunities and Josh Salis showed a clean pair of heels when given an inch of space to score the first of what looks to be many exciting tries.

Junior Campus Ensemble Attendance and Punctuality

Morning and Lunchtime Sessions

With the Junior Music Festival fast approaching, students are reminded about the importance of regular attendance to all Music Ensemble rehearsals, in reaching a high standard of performance excellence. Parents are asked to please ensure students arrive to rehearsals on time with their instruments and all other required resources. Absence due to camp and/or illness will be the only accepted reason for non-attendance. It is essential that parents contact juniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au if their child is unable to attend any rehearsals.

Junior School Curriculum Music

In Music classes this term, students will analyse and perform repertoire based on our STEAM Theme (Science Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics). It will be an action-packed term as students’ study units of inquiry such as ‘the sounds engines make’ and ‘patterns around us.’
