Issue 14 2024 Term 2 Week 3 - 16 May 2024

From the Principal

Yesterday we hosted our 2024 Platinum Luncheon which honours our former students who attended Redlands at least 50 years ago. It was a wonderful occasion as 120 of these Redlanders were in attendance catching up with each other; reconnecting with their alma mater; and sharing their memories, reflections and stories from their time at Redlands.

The Platinum Luncheon is another one of my favourite events on the Redlands calendar as it is not only an opportunity for us to further strengthen our relationship with our alumni, but it also connects us with the people who helped to create and foster the special Redlands culture we value today.

Personally, I enjoyed hearing these Redlanders share some of their stories such as: learning to sing the lyrics to “Popeye the Sailor Man” in Latin, the formation of the first Redlands orchestra fifty years ago and uniform detentions being given out by the Deputy Headmistress, Miss Steel.

It was also an honour to have Ms Coralie Amos OAM (Class of 1964) speak at the Platinum Luncheon and we are proud to be naming our next means-tested scholarship after her. In 2021, Ms Amos was awarded the Order of the Medal of Australia for services to the community, assisting others through organisations such as the Australian National Museum of Education, Meals on Wheels and her local hospital. Ms Amos shared her journey of volunteering and reflected on the power of giving one’s self, time and knowledge in the service of others. More details about the Coralie Amos OAM Scholarship can be found here.

Service has been a core pillar of a Redlands education for the past 140 years and I am proud to say it continues to be so today. Just a few weeks ago, Redlands Secondary School students were awarded a Next Generation Award at the North Sydney Council‘s Community Awards for their service work with the residents of Bougainvillea Retirement Village next door to the Senior Campus.

The example of Ms Amos and these current students illustrates how through dedicated, generous and selfless acts of service, we have and continue to make a tremendous difference in the lives of others.

I am very proud to share that Redlands has been nominated as an Excellence Awardee for the Australian Education Awards 2024 in the Innovation in Curriculum Design category. This award recognises excellence in innovation in program design and delivery that contributes to improved student learning outcomes. Nurturing and deepening a culture of innovation is one of our key strategic drivers, and it is pleasing to see Redlands recognised as a national education leader in this space.

We are also very proud of Daisy Thomas (Yr 12) who was presented with three awards at the Snow Australia Awards in Melbourne earlier this month:

  • 2024 Junior Athlete of the Year
  • Female Athlete of the Year (Freestyle Park & Pipe)
  • Junior Athlete of the Year (Freestyle Park & Pipe).

These accolades follow Daisy’s exceptional achievements in January, where she won Australia’s first ever Winter Youth Olympic medal in Big Air Freestyle Skiing, claiming silver at the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, South Korea; and also placed 5th in the Ski Slopestyle Final.

Community Update

It is always a real treat to join our alumni for the annual Platinum Luncheon. This popular and much-loved event welcomes Redlanders who attended the School more than 50 years ago, providing a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the enduring and diverse experiences, friendships and achievements of our former students. Our cherished alumni thoroughly enjoyed each other’s company and delighted in the speeches and musical performances provided by our talented students. My thanks to the Class of 1969 who hosted me at their table and also to all those that contributed to this successful event.

The recollections of Ms Coralie Amos OAM AM (RL 1964) within the Platinum Lunch were particularly engaging as she recounted her time at Redlands through the late 1950s and 60s, and shared compelling experiences as a celebrated community volunteer. As a student at Redlands School, she was thrilled to have the opportunity to serve as Sports Captain for McDouall House and as Tennis Captain, winning the Hattersley Cup. Coralie chose teaching as a profession, and received a Commonwealth Scholarship and Teacher College Scholarship that assisted in her studies. Following a successful teaching career Coralie, immersed herself into volunteering in various pursuits selflessly serving others in her community, which she continues today.  In 2021, Coralie was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to the community. We are delighted and proud to name our latest scholarship appeal in her honour – the Coralie Amos OAM Scholarship Appeal.  Click here for more details.

It was pleasure to welcome and celebrate our Redlands House, Preparatory and Junior School Mums and Carers on campus with coffee and classroom activities earlier this week. Our Junior Campus students always shine brighter when their loved ones visit them on campus and it was lovely to see the great pride and joy that this special event provides.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Platinum Luncheon – Celebrating 140 Years of Redlands

Redlands Hall was brimming with warmth and excitement as 120 guests celebrated 140 Years of Redlands’ rich history at this year’s Platinum Luncheon. This annual celebration welcomes those who attended Redlands 50 years or more ago, and this we were honoured to gather with the classes of 1954, 1964 and 1974 who celebrated milestone reunions. It was particularly special to speak with Jenny Wilson from the Class of 1949, and hear how the school has changed in the 75 years since her graduation.

This was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the rich history and development of our Redlands programs and facilities. Keynote Speaker Coralie Amos OAM, a Redlander from the Class of 1964, talked about the incredible advancements she has noticed. She was somewhat surprised to see white tables and walls that students are actively encouraged to write on, enhancing collaborative learning, the different gardens across the campus to encourage and support experiential learning, the increased scale of our science labs, and of course our transformational Redlands Learning Hub.

Honoring Lynette Fahl and naming of Fahl Garden

As we reflected with the Class of 1964 on the life of their classmate, the late Lynette Fahl, after whom our Senior Campus Garden (in front of the Redlands Learning Hub) is named, a deep sense of gratitude was felt. The redevelopment of the Science Block were made possible by a bequest Lynette’s family left Redlands to help achieve the vision the School has for its advancement, and to honour their daughter’s legacy.

Coralie Amos OAM RL 1964 Scholarship Appeal

To acknowledge and honour Coralie’s dedication for Service and helping communities in many different areas, we have launched Coralie Amos OAM Scholarship Appeal.

Her commitment goes from the Australian national Museum of Education, Meals on Wheels, the local hospital to more than 37 years promoting golf as a healthy sport for women and girls at the club and district level, she has given her time and passion freely without seeking recognition or reward. In 2021 Coralie was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to the community.

Part 2: The Post-War Era, SCEGGS Redlands 1945 – 1975

By 1945, after two world wars, a flu epidemic and a Depression, the School was struggling financially by 1945. When Miss Roseby retired at the end of that year, the Old Girls’ Union gave generously to establish the new Roseby Library. The new Headmistress of SCEGGS Redlands, Mrs Isobel Humphery, was a war widow and herself a daughter of a war widow, having attended Church of England Girls Grammar School, Cremorne, an independent school set up in 1919 for the children of War widows. She came to her new role at SCEGGS Redlands with a keen sense of social awareness and worked with the SCEGGS Council, Old Girls and staff and welcomed the parents on campus with the establishment of the Mothers’ Canteen in 1958 (with an initial focus on second hand uniforms and the canteen) and the Redlands Parents’ Association in 1960. Mrs Humphery worked tirelessly, building a new post-war school community at Redlands. As the child of a single parent and a single parent herself, Redlanders have noted that she was particularly sympathetic to students whose parents were widowed or divorced and she had a mutual respect for her staff and a loyal band of parents, who gave their time to raise funds for the school, raising money to build a new library in 1955 and science labs in 1957. Students and their parents also gave generously to various charities including the Central Australia Mission during the 1950s and 1960s.

In 1961, the school fair was organised by the parents for the first time and a major campaign was launched money for a school assembly hall, the fundraising managed by the school, predominantly volunteer parents. The Hall was opened in 1966 and a canteen, operated exclusively by parent volunteers, opened underneath in 1968. In 1971, it was reported that 325 Mothers had volunteered their time in the canteen that year, while all unsold food was sent to Dalwood, Chesalon and Baptist homes to help the charities and avoid wasted food.

Fundraising continued throughout the 1970s with the first named Spring Fair held in 1973. Money raised included the purchase of musical instruments, allowing the school to start its first full school orchestra, and fit-out for the new Roseby Library in the Humphery Building.

The students did their bit for the Junior Red Cross and other charities with cake stalls and yo-yo competitions and selling Christmas cards, raising funds, in aid of schools and hospitals and the Vietnamese Orphans’ appeal. By 1979, students were sponsoring animals at Taronga Zoo and raising money for Multiple Sclerosis by holding fashion shows. In the mid-1970s, however, the School came to the brink of closure as a result of some ill-advised financial decisions by the SCEGGS Council and was saved from being sold by a dedicated band of parents on the Redlands’ Parents Association.

Behind the Scenes with the RPFA: Meet your Class Parents

A wonderful group of volunteers, Class Parents are in place from Redlands House all the way up to Yr 12. Their efforts in welcoming new parents, organising teacher celebrations and facilitating class social events go a long way in maintaining the connected and engaged school community we enjoy here at Redlands.

Check back here each week to meet 2024 Class Parents and discover how you can get involved!

CP Five

Name: Ervina Mercado
Role: Class Parent for Juniors Orange and Two Yellow
Kids: Declan (Juniors), Alyssa (Kindergarten), Jayden (Year 2),

If you could choose a Class Parent theme song what would be the title name?
You’ve got a friend in me from Toy Story – we’re all in this together and I’ll always try to be a friend, a helping hand, a sounding board.

Why did you decide to become a Class Parent, and what do you love most about it?
I like to bring people together so that we can each find those who will help to support us in our children’s childhood years. It’s also a great way to connect and build friendships. We are new to the School and have truly enjoyed getting to know the lovely families in this school community. I’ve also had a lot of support from my co-class parents – Elizabeth (JO) and Sarah (2Y) and also the class parents of my daughter’s Kindergarten class Sophia and Leah.

What advice would you give to a parent or carer looking to get more involved in the school?
Let your class parents know that you are interested so that they can keep you front of mind when opportunities arise, keep up to date with school communications and Note Day to find out when volunteers are needed and try to find some time to stay engaged with the school community, even if it’s just saying hello and stopping for a little chat with someone.

If you could trade places with your children for a day, what would you most want to experience?
Having the time and energy to run around the oval with my friends, playing all sorts of sports and made up games.

Year 12 Festival on the Fahl pursues $50,000 for the McGrath Foundation this 30 May!

2024 Festival on the Fahl takes place on Thursday 30 May. This year we raise money for the McGrath Foundation. Our Year 12 Captains are currently planning a fun day of activities and community building events to secure a Redlands record sum for their chosen charity.

If students can raise $5000 before the day, they wear mufti.

On the day, students can purchase a BBQ lunch and delicious treats.

There will be a range of fun activities spread out across the afternoon.

Prior to the day, teachers will be auctioning off their classes to Year 12 students who will then pick up the teacher baton and take responsibility for delivering the curriculum in an engaging and enjoyable lesson.

To ensure the day is smooth and easy to facilitate, with over 1000 students on the Senior Campus, the event will be ‘cash-only’. All students are advised to bring sufficient gold coins so they can engage in the prepared activities and contribute to this worthy cause.

A Go-Fund Me Page has been set up to generate awareness and support. All funds raised will go directly to the McGrath Foundation.

Please support the students and their fun-d raising initiatives.

National Reconciliation Week

This National Reconciliation Week, the theme “Now More Than Ever” resonates deeply, serving as a reminder that the pursuit of justice and the acknowledgment of the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are ongoing imperatives. At Redlands, our classrooms reflect our commitment to truth-telling, listening carefully, and understanding our shared histories, as well as tackling racism. From exploring Aboriginal astrology in Science to attending performances by Bangarra Dance Theatre, our curriculum is diverse. Our Art students examine contemporary Aboriginal artists, and our Computing Technology students draw knowledge from Aboriginal social connections. In English and History, we confront uncomfortable truths about dispossession and the Stolen Generations. Our immersive Midawarr Camp in Arnhem Land underscores our dedication to a deep understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures by walking with the Yolngu people on their Country.

During National Reconciliation Week, the Redlands Secondary School will engage in various initiatives to spotlight and contribute to reconciliation efforts. Redlands Hall will host an exhibition showcasing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artworks from our collection. Inspirational talks by individuals dedicated to reconciliation will take place, and the Roseby Library will feature works by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors and intellectuals. Our Week 5 Student-led assembly will focus on this year’s theme, featuring a talk by a representative from Welcome to Country, a social enterprise that promotes economic self-determination and champions the growth of wealth and success within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Now more than ever, the call for respect, action, and change echoes strongly. Redlands proudly supports this week, aiming to empower our students as the next generation of leaders in the reconciliation journey.

Tomorrow Woman

Yr 12 students who identify as she/her will be engaging in a Tomorrow Woman workshop next Tuesday. Tomorrow Woman’s motto is Trust your voice, dare to speak, author your tomorrow. They support females in recognising their voice and the need for their voice in the world. In today’s world, 54% of girls feel like they are not a good enough woman.

In Yr 10, this cohort participated in Tomorrow Woman’s the Her Code workshop that aimed to question the confines and expectations of modern womanhood.  This year, Yr 12 will participate in the Her Influence workshop which aims to look more deeply at how certain pressures and expectations influence the way they treat others, particularly other women, and students are given the tools to create a more supportive peer dynamic.

2024 Festival on the Fahl

As a school community who strongly values service, the 2024 Festival on the Fahl will raise $50,000 for the McGrath Foundation to directly support the patients and families of those affected by breast cancer. Fifty-seven Australian Women are diagnosed with Breast Cancer every day.

The Festival on the Fahl will be held on Thursday the 30th of May on the Senior Campus. Students across Years 7-12, staff, families and community members are encouraged to support through active participation and giving.

Festival on the Fahl is designed to bring the students and staff of the Secondary School community together to have fun and celebrate our unique culture for a worthy cause. Please donate.

On the day students are encouraged to bring cash in order to engage with the various activities and stalls available on the Fahl Garden. If every student can commit to $50 on the day, we reach out goal! With community support, we know we can exceed this goal and make a meaningful difference.

Year 11

Year 11 Da Vinci Decathlon

Congratulations to our incredible Year 11s who came 3rd overall in the Da Vinci Decathlon this year. To win subject prizes is a major feat, but an overall placing is a stellar result that attests to the academic rigour and critical thinking of these students. Their accolades also include 2nd prize in Code Breaking, 2nd in Ideation, and 3rd in Cartography. Hugo Baird, Jesse Forrest, Lachlan Green, Krishna Gupta, Katherine Lam, Liam Petersen, Emma Wong, and Sophie Yu have produced one of the best results the school has ever had in this highly challenging and prestigious competition. They were also leaders in weekly coaching and mentoring sessions, going above and beyond the requirements of the IB CAS (Creativity, Activity, and Service) Experience to teach higher order skills to younger members of the team, sharing expertise and strategies on how to develop excellent responses under time pressure. I look forward to reporting the full report on their results upon their release later in the term.

Service Trip to Cambodia

Students accepted onto the Cambodia trip have been nominating preferences for their groupings. If there are any families who are yet to register on the Infuse website via the link sent by Mr Gray this should be done as soon as possible to confirm the place.

Shortly Mr Gray will be reaching out to the group to check-in about fundraising which can be started right away. The pre-learning program will also start soon, which will help students understand why M’Lop Tapang is an important cause for us, and help prepare students for their experience.

Year 11 HSC Earth and Environmental Sciences and IB Environmental Systems and Societies Excursion

On Tuesday the Year 11 HSC Earth and Environmental Sciences and IB Environmental Systems and Societies students participated in a day long excursion to Bantry Bay to gain hands on experience in ecological sampling techniques and discussing the Human impact on ecosystem resources and dynamics. The day started with a observing geological maps of Sydney Basin and discussing the changes. Students then got their hands dirty collecting soil samples to determine acidity, texture and the composition. After a quick recess student then trailed into the native bushland to conduct a transect and quadrat sample identifying the changes in native and exotic flora whilst relating this to proximity to the urban street line. The day was finished with a water quality and pollution analysis of two creeks where students measured; pH, conductivity, turbidity and conducted a macroinvertebrate capture to use as a biological index to determine the pollution level between the samples. Students enjoyed the sunshine and getting up close and personal with some leeches. The day provided a great experience into how data is collected in real life ecosystems.

Year 11 HSC Geography Excursion

On Monday Year 11 HSC Geography Students investigated Circular Quay as an urban environment as part of the new HSC Geography Investigation. We were very lucky with the weather and students had the chance to explore the social, economic and environmental sustainability of our local city. We are so lucky to live in such a great place!

Year 10

Year 10 Half-Yearly Examination Reminders

Today at our Yr 10 assembly, I congratulated students on their excellent preparation for the Half-Yearly Examinations. This is a significant milestone for the cohort – it is their last exam block before commencing their Senior studies later this year. I know that there has been much trepidation and some challenging hurdles to overcome in the lead up to the exam block. I encourage Yr 10 to spend the weekend focusing on self-care, study and sleep before next week.

Here are some key messages and reminders I reaffirmed with Yr 10 in regards to their Half-Yearly Examinations:

Uniform

  • Students must attend the Half-Yearly Examinations wearing full school uniform. Students are permitted to wear sport uniform on Thursday, and on Tuesday if they are involved in representative sport training.
  • Students are not exempt from sport training due to exams.

Cocurricular Activities

Da Vinci Decathlon

Year 10 travelled to Knox Grammar School on Wednesday 15 May to compete in the Da Vinci Decathlon. They demonstrated excellent teamwork skills and have worked hard since the start of Term 1 to prepare for the big day. Congratulations to Zara Anderson, Leah Chung, Kira Delaney, Ethan Lee, Lucinda Maher, Finlay Meijer, Frankie Richardson, and Marcus Richardson for their dedicated efforts. While some students on the team have done Da Vinci before, there were also several new members, who adapted quickly to the high level of academic rigour and challenge. Well done!

Year 9

Subject Focus – Drama

Across Monday and Tuesday evening our Year 9 Drama classes presented their performances for their current assessment which required them to delve into some of the more complex times and events that have shaped Australian history.

Students were required to undertake significant research into an event such as The Great Emu War of 1932 or the 2020 Bushfires and develop a ‘doco drama’ style performance, highlighting some of the controversies surrounding the event.

An additional challenge put to students was the need to work in groups with others that they may not necessarily have done before and fully develop their own scripts.

Thank you to the Drama Department and especially, Miss Samantha Novis and Mr Lincoln Gidney for their wonderful support in helping students prepare for and stage these performances. What an incredibly valuable learning experience for our students.

Subject Focus – Art

Year 9 Art students are currently studying sculpture and I was lucky enough to see some of their wonderful works throughout the week.

Da Vinci Decathalon

The Year 9 Da Vinci Decathlon team brought home honours in the form of a 3rd place subject award in Science. This is a fantastic and well deserved result for a group of students who bond together in a highly collaborative manner and thrive on deep, rigorous thinking across a range of areas. Congratulations to Charlotte Boris, Soraya Christian-Hare, Alex Heller, Sophia Liu, Bowen Shiao, Abby Stante, Will Thomson and Will Vass for their excellent achievement. I look forward to reporting the full results when Top 16 placings are released later in the term.

Redlands Students Success at the RSYS Presentation Evening

The RSYS Dinghy Squad Presentation Evening was held on Saturday 11 May, with several Redlands students receiving coveted perpetual awards, which were presented by Redlands alumni Karyn Gojnich.

School Fashion

With a mixture of new and old uniforms bouncing about the School, and a change from Summer into Winter uniform, it can sometimes be a challenge for students to stay on top of what is required in their school uniform. Luckily, we have students as committed as Charlie Lee and Mackenzie Willis who confidently took to the stage in Redlands Hall on Monday to perform a fashion show for the cohort in our Year Assembly. With style and flair, Charlie and Mackenzie demonstrated what to wear and how to wear it well for our Redlands uniform. They moved gracefully along the stage, while yours truly, read out the fashion show script, giving Yr 8 clear pointers on how to wear their uniform well.

Alas, no photos were taken of our wonderful fashion show, but you can read the script below.

Welcome to the 2024 Fall catalogue show, featuring charming Charlie and magnificent Mackenzie modelling the Redlands uniform!

Introducing our first model ‘Charlie’! Let’s hear it for her.

Sporting a very ‘in’ look, Charlie is wearing the new Redlands dress. It is colourful, comfortable and note how the hemline comes down, so that it sits neatly on the top of her knee. How perfectly practical and so very fashionable. Charlie is wearing appropriate socks and black, leather school shoes. Comfortable and sophisticated. Would we expect anything else? And now let’s look at those amazing accessories. Charlie is in style with the totally natural look – she has no make-up and no nail polish – oh yeah, that’s so fresh! And she has only one stud or sleeper in each ear. Minimalism is the new maximalism. Go Charlie!

Thank you, Charlie. Keep looking super good!

And now our second model, Mackenzie. Give it up for Mack – on the attack!

Rocking out in the boys uniform, Mack is looking slick and ready to tackle any classes. From his glossy black leather shoes to his neatly tied tie, he is the definition of suave and sophisticated with all the key accessories. None! On top of that, he has a nicely ironed shirt, and, as he’s wearing the fashionable Redlands trousers, of course his shirt is tucked all the way in. Legs out, shirts out; legs in, shirts in. And topping off an unbeatable look, is a leather belt on tight and looking alright!!

Thank you, Mackenzie. Keep that style fresh!

Let’s hear it again for our two top models!

Full uniform details are available on Pulse.

Da Vinci Decathlon

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was one of the world’s greatest thinkers and scholars. Da Vinci demonstrated an ability to perceive the interconnected nature of knowledge and embraced learning with a lifelong passion and determination to uncover the unknown. In his honour, The Da Vinci Decathlon exists, a competition that places a particular emphasis on higher order thinking skills, problem solving and creativity.

Earlier this week, a collection of our Yr 8 students attended Knox College to compete in the Decathlon. They not only had a great day competing but achieved some exceptional results, achieving 2nd place in two subject areas: English, and Art and Poetry. Given the high level of competition with entries from many schools, including selective high schools, it is a fantastic achievement to attain such high placings, particularly in the junior years, as our students are still relatively new to the challenging nature of the questions.

Huge congratulations to the entire Yr 8 team – Natalie Bain, Lachlan Carter, Ina Guan, Aimee Kang, Olivia Law, Charlie Lee, Aaron Oh, and Clementine Roumanoff. They all worked incredibly well as a team and we look forward to hearing of their full results, which will be released later in the term.

Day of AI

The Day of AI was an exhilarating event filled with engaging discussions and positive exchanges centered around the boundless possibilities of AI. Participants enthusiastically delved into the intricacies of inputting data to cultivate valuable insights and innovative ideas. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as students wholeheartedly embraced the opportunity to connect with peers who share their passion for leveraging AI’s potential. From exploring emerging technologies to brainstorming creative applications, the day was a testament to the transformative power of collaborative learning and the limitless horizons of artificial intelligence.

A huge thank you to everyone who was involved in the organisation and running of such a positive and engaging day.

Roseby Red – Rooftop Party

Well done Roseby Red, you certainly deserved your rooftop party. Such a great opportunity to connect with other students in the Tutor group. Thank you for creating such a beautiful poster about Respect in our community.

Group Chats

We are educating our Yr 7 students on the importance of balancing technology use both at home and in school. Below are some strategies we have discussed together. Implementing these strategies can help alleviate the stress and overwhelm often associated with group chats, empowering our students to manage their digital communication more effectively.

Suggestions to reduce group chat overwhelm:

  1. Set your phone to “do not disturb” mode: This feature helps minimise interruptions by silencing notifications from incoming messages, allowing you to focus on other tasks without being constantly bombarded by notifications.

  2. Mute the chat: Most messaging apps offer the option to mute specific group chats, which can be incredibly helpful in reducing the frequency of notifications. This way, you can still check the chat at your convenience without being overwhelmed by constant alerts.

  3. Leave the chat: If the group chat is causing excessive stress or distraction, consider leaving the chat altogether. This is a viable option when the chat is no longer serving its intended purpose or when the volume of messages becomes unmanageable.

  4. Set your text receipts to “delivered” rather than “read”: Changing your text receipts settings to display “delivered” instead of “read” can help alleviate the pressure to respond immediately. This allows everyone in the group to respond at their own pace without feeling pressured to reply instantly.

  5. Set reasonable expectations with friends. Have a cut-off time where phones are put out of sight to minimise distractions.

 Wellbeing Seminar

Thank you to everyone who attended the recent ‘Managing your Teen’s stress, anxiety and other big emotions’ seminar. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Thank you to our Wellbeing and Counselling Team for your incredible work preparing and delivering this session.

This seminar covered:

  • What to expect and developing your understanding of the normal course of adolescent emotional development
  • Managing emotions by helping your teen express their emotions and helping them regain emotional control
  • Recognising unhealthy emotional expression and responding appropriately

If you would like access to the resources from this session, please use the  ‘Secondary School Student Wellbeing’ page on Pulse.

Head of Junior School

Thank you for the wonderful turn-out at the Junior Campus Mother’s Day morning on Monday. It was a great opportunity to acknowledge the remarkable role that mothers play in our lives and as a school, it was good to thank our mums and carers for everything they do. I also acknowledge that for some families and students Mother’s Day can be a challenging and a difficult day and our thoughts are with them on these occasions.

Cross Country Carnival

Warm sunshine, muddy legs and great House Spirit were on display at the Junior School annual Cross Country Carnival held at St Leonards Park this week. The effort demonstrated by our runners was commendable, as too was the support and encouragement our students exhibited to each other. Congratulations to all who took part and thank you to the many parents, including our parent volunteers, who supported the event. A special well done to this year’s winning House, Roseby and especially to our age champions and runners up (further details are included in the Junior Sport section of Note Day).

Student Safety and Safeguarding Focus

Part of our responsibilities under Child Safe Standards is to take account of and find opportunities to listen to student voices to inform the school’s decision-making processes. This is especially pertinent in the context of student safeguarding.  As such, this term we are implementing Playground Climate Surveys for students in the Junior School with the aim of capturing students’ views of what is working well, as well as areas needing improvement in this part of the school.

The short surveys are anonymous, confidential and target areas such as; activities and games enjoyed by students, areas in the playground where they feel safe plus locations where they feel less safe, behaviour of students they perceive as being kind and respectful, and conversely, any behaviour of students they perceive as being unfair or unkind.

Results will be analysed by senior staff to identify patterns and themes and interventions will then be implemented. The Playground Climate Surveys will be administered again later in the year to track and measure the impact of the actions taken.

Year 4 Aboriginal Art Incursion

Year 4 engaged in an enriching Aboriginal Art Incursion on Thursday last week, guided by Muru Mittigar community members. The session aimed to deepen understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal art’s significance in visual storytelling, aligning with our Term 1 English and Units of Inquiry curriculum. Students actively participated in discussions on Dharug and Aboriginal history, explored artefacts, partook in an art workshop, and enjoyed storytelling opportunities, fostering meaningful connections and enjoyment throughout.

Year 4 Camp

The Year 4 students and staff are enjoying a few days away from school this week at their outdoor education camp at Fitzroy Falls. This has presented a further opportunity to embed some of their learning this term as well as to engage in age-appropriate adventure-based activities. We look forward to welcoming back our Year 4 campers tomorrow.

Parents Circles: Responsive Parenting and Raising Healthy Children

A message from our Junior Campus Counsellor, Silvia Roberts

Being a responsive parent sounds simple enough, but living high stress lives, often in isolation, lots of us know how nearly impossible it can be. Recognising that the essential condition for a healthy child’s development is the child’s relationship with nurturing adults, we invite you to join us for regular Parents’ Circles facilitated by the school counsellor, Silvia Roberts.

The Parents Circles will draw on specific topics and will be centred on providing a space for open discussions and questions. The sessions will also equip parents with a wide range of essential practical and emotional regulation skills, and guide parents through the art of fulfilling their children’s needs which are the essence of healthy positive parenting.

The topic for the session, in Week 4 (Wednesday 22 May 8.30 am – 9.30 am in Lucy Hill Library) is:

Family Systems – Boundary Systems: Boundaries Must Be Taught

  • Small children have no boundaries and develop whatever the boundary system parents have.
  • What happens when parents either wall up or lack boundaries? Or what happens when each parent has a different boundary system?
  • Exploring different possibilities of families’ boundary systems and family roles. Guiding parents to help children set up functional healthy boundaries, which in turn will help children to create healthy friendships.

In Week 7, we will be exploring the topic of Negative Core Beliefs in Children – Positive Parenting

  • Negative core beliefs in children can lead to them developing depression, anxiety, co-dependency, relationship issues or addictions later in life.
  • How can parents prevent the onset of negative core beliefs?
  • Exploring five core natural attributes of children and guiding parents to attend to those in a functional and effective way.

This will help their children develop each separate characteristic properly which will lead to functional teens and adults who feel good about themselves rather than develop dysfunctional survival traits.

We extend a welcome to our prep and junior parents to attend. You are welcome to bring your own coffee or tea. As this is a parenting circle of support, numbers are limited to 20 to keep it small enough for interactive discussion so please book your space here.

Mother’s Day

There is nothing better than bringing mothers and carers together to enjoy a coffee, a pastry and a good chat with friends, that is exactly what we did on Monday to celebrate our wonderful Redlands mums. The rain held off just long enough for us to stop the busyness of life and appreciate everything that our Redlands mum do for their families and for us!

Classroom were a buzz with activity as I walked around. It was lovely to see mum shoulder massages happening, arts and craft, singing, storytelling, building activities and learning shared on ipads.

A big thank you to all the mums and carers who came on Monday, I hope that the small snippet in time made you feel very loved, valued and spoilt.

Prep Students Out and About!

Kindergarten’s visit to Golden Ridge Farm

On Tuesday, our Kindergarten classes went on an exciting excursion to Golden Ridge Animal Farm. The students had a wonderful time exploring the farm and meeting various animals. One of the highlights was milking Betty the Cow, where we learned the difference between dairy cows and beef cows. Farmer Charlie helped us to recognise all the different products that come from the milk of a cow. Another fascinating fact we learnt was that llamas spit to protect sheep, giving them enough time to escape from predators. The children had the chance to hold chicks and ducklings and they fed lambs as well. We also discovered that a baby rabbit is called a kitten. The entire excursion, including the bus trip, was an enjoyable experience for all.

Year 1 Visit to the Big Dig

Year 1 learners were digging into the past on their excursion to The Big Dig last week. There was much awe and wonder as the students learnt about the Foy and Byrne families who lived in The Rocks in the 1800s.

Each class took turns to work as archaeologists, excavating artefacts from the simulated archaeological dig. Students used an interactive map mat and artefacts found at the site to examine and discuss how these families lived. They couldn’t believe that all seven children shared a bedroom!

The excursion has really provoked curiosity in the Year 1 students. They came back to school with so many questions and perhaps feeling a little more grateful for the things they can enjoy today – like a hot shower!

OOSH Reminder

Parents and carers are reminded that children attending OOSH must be picked up by 6pm. In the instance when you are running late, please call OOSH to let them know your expected time of arrival and they will organise a staff member to stay past 6pm.

Please be aware that late picks charges $10 for first 5 mins and $5 for every minute after that (See OOSH Pulse page for full OOSH details).

Thank you for your support with this.

Parents picking up their children from OOSH after 4pm MUST enter and exit via the Junior School Reception only. The emergency exit next to the Prep Reception is not to be used for exiting the building at any time for OOSH students and their families.

Prep School Playground Reminders for Families

Our Prep students are so very lucky with the variety of activities that are on offer after school, and we love seeing them active and happy. With such variation comes a logistical structure that needs to be understood and followed by staff, students and families.

Can I please remind our Prep families that the playground equipment is only to be used for children who are registered at OOSH after school hours. If you are waiting for a Junior School sibling, we ask parents to supervise their Prep child in an area that is close to where you are waiting.

Food that is offered by OOSH staff in the playground is for OOSH students only, thank you for supporting us to keep all our children safe after school.

Secondary Sport

The wet weather played havoc over the weekend, with a number of teams having cancellations, whilst we try to anticipate cancellations as early as possible unfortunately in some instances we are at the mercy of opposing schools (or councils). We do try to get the cancellations out as early as possible, via the Redlands App, so this is a timely reminder to ensure you (and your children) have access to the Redlands App.

We have just come out of the Year 12 assessment block and next week will see the Year 10s sit their half yearly exams, it is important to reiterate that maintaining sports and physical activity during these periods offers several benefits:

  • Stress Reduction – physical activity can help release endorphins, which can manage stress, maintain focus and mental well-being
  • Improved Cognitive Function – regular sports has been linked to improved cognitive function, including better concentration, memory and problem solving skills, which leads to students studying effectively.
  • Improved Time Management – balancing academic studies with sport and physical activities teaches students valuable time management skills. Learning to prioritise and allocate time efficiently is essential for success both in academics and life well beyond school years.
  • Increased Energy and Productivity – physical activity boosts energy levels and productivity by improving circulation and oxygen flow to the brain and body, this again can lead to greater focus, efficiency and stamina for tackling academic tasks.

We are encouraging all students to maintain their sporting commitments throughout this period not only to support their academic success but also to contribute to holistic development, mental well-being and long term health.

“When I step onto the court, I don’t have to think about anything. If I have a problem off the court, I find that after I play, my mind is clearer and I can come up with a better solution. It’s like therapy. It relaxes me and allows me to solve problems.”

Football

Week 2 of the ISA Competition.

With the weather affecting some of the fixtures again we are grateful that some of the games went ahead. For the second week in a row we are so pleased to have the new playing fields at Macquarie .

On a very wet day at St Patrick’s grounds. The boys played quite well against a very good ST Patrick’s team.  Very happy with the effort the boys put in and the commitment to play football.

Well, done everyone as we look forward to keeping improving, most of our girls will be away to Barker and the boys are at home to ST Pius.

Hockey

Despite the wet weather Round 2 of the ISA Hockey Season went ahead against Central Coast Grammar School and Barker. The 1sts game was a tightly fought match and the game ended up in a 1-1 draw. 2nds continued their good start to the season with another strong performance winning 3-2. The defensive structure was a key focus of the coach during the week and this showed in frustrating their opponents all match. Our 3rds team came up against a strong Barker side but showed great determination to fight back from 2 goals down early on and went into halftime very much in the match at 2-3. Barker started the second half stronger, and the game ended up 3-5 to Barker. This weekend only the 1sts have a match against Chevalier with the 2nds and 3rds each having a bye round.

Netball

Round 2 delivered another good run of wins for our netballers with 10 wins , 2 draws and 2 losses.

Players of the week for Round 2 are listed below.

The Firsts was Alex Tanner. Alex showed fast and impactful defensive movement and many rebounds against a very accurate shooter.

Junior A was Olive Ross Sampson. Olive had amazing shooting and agility work in the circle, she was everywhere on the court. A definite stand out player for the day.

Junior D was Sophie Feller. Sophie was super enthusiastic and she played exceptionally. She was highly adaptable and happy to play whichever position , her accommodating nature made for a positive game.

Junior B was Annalise Beatty. Annalise showed great enthusiasm in training and at the game. She played out of position and did an amazing job adapting to coaching instruction.

Junior C was Matilda Hugman. Matilda played with lots of energy and adapted well to the umpires calls. She had a good eye on the court passing accurately into the goal circle to the shooters and settling when needed. She was also did amazing stepping into wing defense with little experience and is continuously growing her skills.

Junior E was Alice Connell . Alice happily took a new position to help out the team for majority of the game. She adapted well to the new position making some great intercepts and keeping the energy high on the court.

Senior 3 was Sophia Rayson. Sophia makes playing C look effortless! She gives 100% to every play which allows the ball to flow down the court seamlessly.

Inter C was Eva Simpson. Eva did a phenomenal job as goalkeeper in today’s game. She got 3 feet and her arms up quickly, which challenged the other team shooters greatly. She also jumped for every rebound and assisted her team in a massive win on the weekend.

Junior G was Scarlett Kohn. Scarlett played really well in a variety of positions. Great shooting and had some very good intercepts and was clearing the ball quickly when defending.

Junior F was Claudia Chmielewski. Claudia did really well at finding space in the circle and put up some great shots from far away and communicated well with her team.

Inter B was Alice Franceschi. Alice grew with her shooting confidence over the course of the game. Alice dug deep, pushed herself and had a strong game in the end.

Inter E was Katie Budden. Katie moved well in C this weekend, she had great movement down the court and was an impactful feeder into the circle.

Inter D was Talie Kara. Talie had quick defensive footwork and got many tips which were very impressive in her game.

Here is the draw for Round 3

A reminder we have our annual Pink Sock Day Redlands fundraising weekend on June 1st across all sports at Redlands. To celebrate all players will be asked to wear pink socks and we will hold a bake sale at NBISC. Our Friends of Netball committee will be reaching out in the next 2 weeks will details of our you can be involved. We would appreciate your baking services that weekend. Last year was a huge success, let’s try and beat it this year.

Rugby

We also ask that players and parents check the Pulse page & Rugby news notifications for weekly updates and important information.

Focus for the week:

Our junior age teams managed to get some wet weather footy under their belt on the weekend, super promising to see the energy on display. A special mention to our u13’s who showed real determination until the last hooter with a try and rightly deserved celebration in the dying minutes against an incredibly strong Shore team.

This week’s focus is to harness that energy and determination across all age groups. Play until the final hooter, try hard all training sessions, do your extras, attend the s&c sessions in our fitness center.

  • Opens Girls: Sam Wightwick, Indi Hindmarsh ,Alexia van der Merwe, Heidi De Saxe

We have plenty of Touch Football opportunities in the off season.

High performance groups will be invited to attend a number of events during Winter, including the quickly approaching Metro carnival. A trial will be held shortly to take our Opens Girls team to All Schools in the October school holidays, we look forward to our first participation in this event, hopefully leading to many more in the future across a range of age groups and divisions of play. As always if students are interested in playing or refereeing outside of school, we encourage you to reach out so that we can help point you in the right direction!

Water Polo

A special shout out to our Opens girls who won their first game for the season on Friday last week.

Trainer of the week: This season we will name players/trainers of the week throughout the term on Note Day each week. These players demonstrate commitment to the team in training and strong performance in games.

  • Opens Girls: Sela Tea
  • Inters Girls: Lauren Rolfe
  • Iners Boys: Cooper MacDonald

Focus for the week:

Another week of games, it was good to see there was evidently more improvement in the communication between players during the game. However, this week showed the importance of setting up properly and swimming down to the goals. This week at training we will mainly focus on fitness again, and mock gameplay to work on setting up positioning and refining our shooting to give the kids more confidence to shoot when they are playing the competitive games.

A few reminders:

  • Fixtures have been loaded onto Pulse and the student’s calendar. We encourage all students to download the Redlands App
  • Open Water Polo girls, your compulsory 1x Gym session on Tuesdays 3.30-4.30pm. Attendance is recorded.
  • Inter teams, to attend the Fitness session, please read the Fitness Center pulse page. Inter team students can select the morning they wish to attend but will need to register their attendance.
  • Water polo is a representative sport and as such attendance is compulsory to all training and fixtures. Absences must be logged through Pulse sport absence form.

General Sport Information

Fixtures

  • All student training and fixture details will be available to families under My Schedule on Redlands Pulse. Additionally, the weekly Fixtures (The Redlands Rhino) can be found on the Secondary School Sport page on Redlands Pulse from Wednesday each week. Please ensure you check Redlands Pulse Friday afternoon to ensure you have the latest fixture information.

Uniform

  • The Redlands sports uniform should be worn to all trainings and matches (students are not permitted to wear any non-Redlands branded clothing). In the event of inclement weather students should wear their Redlands fleece or sports tracksuit.
  • Students must wear trainer style sneakers that are preferably white with non-marking soles. It is part of our shared responsibility to ensure that students wear footwear that aligns with the activity to be undertaken. High top sneakers, Vans, Converse etc. are not appropriate for School Sport.

Saturday Sport Absences

  • Parents are required to log an absence via Clipboard prior to missing any training session.
  • Any student unable to attend a Saturday fixture due to illness, is required to submit a Medical Certificate to their Sports administrator by the Monday morning following the missed fixture.
  • Injured students are required to attend all training sessions and Saturday fixtures.
  • Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards and result in school disciplinary action.
  • Please refer to the Student Planner 2024 for full details on requirements for participating in a Representative Sport.
  • Bus Transport
    • When travelling on Redlands transport the Redlands school rules are in place and students should be always upholding the values of the school:
  • Have good behaviour, safe behaviour and appropriate language at all times.
  • Follow the driver (and supervising staff) instructions at all times.
  • Obey the transport rules and regulations at all times (seat belts must be worn at all times).
  • Leave the bus how they found it (no rubbish, no mess).

Students who fail to meet the standards of the above will face school disciplinary action.

Wet Weather

  • Unless communicated differently or in the morning of the session (via Redlands Pulse & Clipboard), all training sessions are to be deemed ‘on’.
  • Students should bring with them a change of Redlands Sport Uniform (Thursdays only) or their school uniform (Tuesday) if there are light showers during training.

Just a reminder for all families who represent Redlands in Saturday sport only Redlands Sports Uniforms and match day kit is to be worn. Each family should own either a school tracksuit and or a fleece that they can wear over the top of their playing kit if they are cold. If your child feels the cold they may play in their fleece if their match allows it.Any incorrect item will now be confiscated as all students have received the same message.

Redlands Pulse Orientation and Navigation Video

Our intranet, Redlands Pulse, is the first port of call for all Junior School Sport related enquiries. A video has been produced to show you how to navigate through Pulse. You can view this short video here.

Redlands Pulse -The Junior School Sport pages on Redlands Pulse will continue to be the ‘source of truth’ for all information relating to sport this term. I am asking that if parents have an enquiry relating to sport that your first port of call will be the Junior School Sport section of Redlands Pulse.

Sport Information Booklet

For all Sport information regarding what sports we offer when, how to navigate our documents, as well as information on Uniforms and Carnivals please refer to our Parent Information Booklet on Pulse.

Wednesday Sport Inability to Train

If your child has an injury that prevents them from training, please send through an email to Junior Sport juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au requesting they ‘sit out’ of training for that particular session. We can then forward this to the relevant external coaching staff. Where applicable please include when they can return to normal training, so coaches are aware of this. That way coaching staff are aware of an injury that prevents them from participating at the venue but also allows us to be aware of periods where they are medically required to ‘sit out’.

Representative Sport Student Absence

If students are absent on match day, parents are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.

Junior Lunchtime Concerts

It’s an exciting day on the Junior Campus – our very first Junior Lunchtime Concert has been hosted for some keen performers from Years 3-6. With the success of our Senior Lunchtime Concerts, facilitated by our Resident Associate Artist, Dr Jeremy Eskenazi, we wanted to bring this informal performance opportunity to our Junior Campus students who are taking private music lessons.

These Junior Lunchtime concerts are for friends to come see with their lunch, and are an informal performance opportunity that we hope will build resilience and courage for our students in the Music Performance space.

Lunchtime concerts are on every second week (Weeks 3, 5, 7 and 9) of term 2 on Thursdays in the Junior Campus, and weekly on the Senior Campus on Wednesdays.

If any students are interested in performing in a future lunchtime concert on the Junior Campus, please talk to Ms. Jacqueline McGlade in person, or email Dr Jeremy Eskenazi on jeskenazi@redlands.nsw.edu.au

Congratulations to all students who performed today! All Junior students are welcome to watch!

Eisteddfods 2024

As we embark upon the Eisteddfod season, let’s reflect on the timeless wisdom of Ralph Waldo Emerson: ‘Life is a journey, not a destination.’ This sentiment underscores the importance of embracing the process—the hard work, dedication and passion poured into every class—not just the eventual performance. It’s through our commitment to growth and preparation that we truly excel and shine on stage.

For the most up-to-date information on this event please see our EISTEDDFODS Pulse page.
