Secondary School Achievements

So many exciting events have taken place in the past week, involving students across the Secondary School. Individual and collective achievements abound, and in today’s Note Day, I wanted to feature a few of these with you.

Yr 12 Geography Trip

On Tuesday Yr 12 HSC students departed for their two-day Geography fieldwork as part of their studies of Ecosystems at Risk, and Economic Activity. The first stop was Port Stephens where they took a quad bike tour of the Worimi Conservation Lands/Stockton Sand Dunes. Students then visited the indigenous culture centre to learn about indigenous management of the ecosystem. On the Wednesday students visited two wineries in the Hunter Valley to learn about organic viticulture practices as part of their of economic activity.

Yr 11 Students Shine at Junior Campus Open Morning

Samantha Hely and Lachlan Binnekamp delivered impressive speeches at the Junior Campus Open Morning to engaged parents. The students’ thoughts and insights about Redlands were very well received.  Lachlan generously shared one of his fondest memories of being in the Junior School:

I still remember my first school camp back in Yr 2 where we went to Camp Rathane in the Royal National Park. This was for sure one of the highlights for me in Prep School and I loved all the fun activities we got to do even if it was a bit daunting having to spend two nights away from my parents at first, I ended up loving it. I remember on the first night my friend and I were struggling to fall asleep on the camp beds and when my teacher came around to do the routine nightly check-up, she noticed we were still awake. My teacher took us to the kitchen hall, sat us both down and went and made us a hot chocolate. She was incredibly kind, and she helped both of us relax so when we went back to our cabin, we both fell straight asleep. I thought there must have been some secret sleep potion in the hot chocolate. It is this sort of care from the teachers that I have experienced throughout my Redlands life that has kept me loving this school and I find it amazing just how much the teachers at Redlands genuinely care about their students. It has been a great transition from Prep School all the way to Secondary School and I have been able to become familiar with the school system and have felt comfortable at Redlands.

A huge congratulations to Samantha and Lachlan for stepping up to this leadership opportunity.

Yr 7 Gymnastics Success

Charli Am competed in the Nationals on the Gold Coast last week and placed 8th overall in the competition. Charli achieved some of her best scores and performed well against very tough competition. A huge congratulations to Charli, who is the outstanding gymnast balancing at the top in this image!

UAC Students and Parents Presentation for Yr 12 Parents and Students

On Wednesday 25 May, from 5-6pm in Redlands Hall, the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) will offer a presentation on applying for tertiary study. The presentation will outline:

  • the ATAR

Kids Giving Back

Our Principal, Mr Webber, and I were proud to receive an email from Gabrielle Morrisey Hansen, CEO of the organisation Kids Giving Back, sharing how a number of our Secondary School students and their families spent time volunteering in Term 4, 2021 and over the last school holidays to help others through this organisation.

Kids Giving Back is a charity whose mission is to create the next generation of generosity through meaningful, hands-on experiences for young people to give back to others. Through charity partners, they arrange opportunities for children aged 6-18 years old and their families to provide assistance and support for people experiencing food scarcity or hardship.

The contribution of our students resulted in over 5000 meals, care packs and new backpacks of school supplies for those in need being prepared and distributed. 11 charities were assisted as a result of their work which supports the homeless and vulnerable in the community.

Thank you to the following Yr 7 students who participated in one or more of the programs during the school holidays: Alexander (Xan) Kraszewski-Francia, Daniel Benoliel, Jeffrey Benoliel, Sebastian Okhovat.

To hear of our Redlands students embracing the concept of contributing back into the community is heart-warming and a wonderful example of our students living our School Values whilst making a difference to the lives of others.

Dr Tessa Opie Presentation

Respectful Relationships: Dr Tessa Opie
Monday 23 May, 7.00-8.30pm
Redlands Hall

All parents and carers are invited to this presentation on Respectful Relationships Education: At School and in the Home. Last year Dr Opie’s workshop was well received by Redlands parents and carers, and we envision this year’s information evening will be just as informative and valuable. As seating numbers are limited, booking is essential so please ensure that you book via this link by Friday 20 May to avoid disappointment. This presentation will target parents and carers of students in Yrs 6 through 12; however, all Redlands parents and carers are welcome.

Flu Season

We have seen a significant decrease in the number of student COVID-19 positive cases over the first four weeks of this term. However, as many of you are aware, there are a number of other “bugs” spreading throughout the wider community which are also affecting our students and staff. The NSW Health Department has expressed their concerns about this flu season and you can find a link to their influenza fact sheet here. Whether it is COVID-19 or other illnesses, our general advice is the same: students who are unwell or are displaying flu-like or COVID-19 symptoms should stay at home, get tested and not return to school until they are symptom free.

From the Deputy Principal

On Tuesday morning I had the pleasure of attending the Junior Campus Open Morning for prospective families to the School. It was a wonderful event, and at its conclusion many of the families in attendance shared their glowing feedback with me. As we have not had as many opportunities to open up our School to the wider community over the past few years, it was a great reminder to me of what makes Redlands so special. Whether it was through the pride of Ms Breckenridge and Mr Guha talking about their respective Sections of the School; or the nostalgic reflections of current Yr 11 students Samantha Hely and Lachlan Binnekamp warmly sharing their experiences from Redlands House, Prep and Junior Schools; or the unbridled excitement of our Yr 2 and Yr 6 student tour guides proudly showing families around the campus – our passionate, engaged and friendly community was on show for everyone to see.

As we have begun to return to more “normal” activities this term, I have also enjoyed the opportunity to reconnect with many parents at weekend sporting fixtures, evening performances or even at the front gate of the Prep School in the morning. I told the prospective families at the Open Morning that when I started at the School over five years ago, I asked everyone I met over my first few weeks – the students, staff and parents – what made Redlands unique. What did they love about their school that made it special? By far the most common answer I heard was the strong sense of community; a community that was warm, welcoming and supportive. We realise that for many parents and carers, you have not been able to share in some of these communal experiences over the past two years, so it is great to now see more and more of these types of events running, not just for the students, but for our whole community.

One of the key drivers of our new strategic plan is the further development of a positive and supportive culture of wellbeing, and a new initiative this year to help us achieve this aim will be administering the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) Social-Emotional Wellbeing Survey with students in Years 3-12. This survey is a confidential, strength-based survey which will assess and measure the overall wellbeing of students, allowing us to measure the effectiveness of our pastoral care programs, identify social and emotional needs of specific student groups and compare data with other schools conducting the survey. We plan to regularly administer this survey moving forward so that we can track the development of our students’ wellbeing over time. Students in Years 3-12 will be completing the survey in their classes or Tutor Groups over the next few weeks, and if any student is uncomfortable taking this survey, they should speak to their class teacher or Tutor.

We are excited to welcome back Dr Tessa Opie from ‘In Your Skin: Relationships and Sexuality Education’, to continue to partner with us as we further develop and implement our relationships, consent and sexuality education programs. Next week she will be working with students in Years 6, 11 and 12 before returning to the School in Term 3 to work with students in Years 7-10. Dr Opie will also hold a parent information session entitled, ‘Respectful Relationships Education: At School and in the Home’ from 7:00pm – 8:30pm this coming Monday 23 May in Redlands Hall. There are still a few places available for this event and parents and carers should book your attendance through this link.

Pleasingly, we have seen a significant decrease in the number of student COVID-19 positive cases over the first four weeks of this term.

Community Update

It was a pleasure to welcome parents and carers to our Junior Campus Open Morning earlier this week.  Our Prep and Junior tour hosts did a magnificent job in guiding our guests through the Junior Campus, whilst openly sharing their experiences as a Redlands student, and our talented musicians charmed all with their wonderful performances. A common thread in my discussions with visiting parents and carers was how impressive it was that our students were valued and known as individual learners and how they are challenged to develop and grow their unique passions and talents.

The Redlands Science and Innovation Luncheon is just around the corner and we are delighted to share the Redlands Online Auction items with our wider school community in order to view and perhaps bid.  The auction has some spectacular items up for grabs that include accommodation packages, food and beverage vouchers, wellbeing experiences, beautiful fashion items and much more. The auction is open to all and will close on Friday 20 May at 2.30pm.  A reminder that proceeds raised from this unique event will be directed to the means-tested Dr Sue Morey AM Scholarship, the fifth Redlands Foundation Scholarship, which honours and celebrates Dr Morey’s outstanding contribution and service to community health in Australia. For more information on the Science and Innovation Lunch along with our special guest panellists please visit our Foundation section.

A reminder that on Monday 23 May we welcome back Dr Tessa Opie from ‘In Your Skin: Relationships and Sexuality Education’, who will be running an information session for Redlands parents and carers on ‘Respectful Relationships Education: At School and in the Home’. This session will run from 7.00 to 8.30pm in Redlands Hall. The feedback from our parents and carers from last year’s session was extremely positive and we envision this year’s information evening will be equally informative and valuable. As seating numbers are limited, booking is essential so please ensure that you book via this link by Friday 20 May to avoid disappointment. This presentation will focus on Years 6 through 12, however, all Redlands parents are welcome.

These events provide a mere snapshot of the wide variety of opportunities our community has to engage with our School and we look forward to welcoming more of our community back on to the campus as Term 2 unfolds.  Thank you to those parents that I met this week for sharing your time and feedback with me.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Call for Climate Strike Reflection Speech – Sophia Lark

Sophia Lark spoke to the Yr 11 cohort at our Year Assembly this week about the ‘Climate Strike’ which recently took place in the City of Sydney. Sophia, along with Lourdes Moya-Jones, Elena Parker, Fedora Hamori, Lily Hobbs, Phoebe Vandekreeke, Jenna O’Reilly and Marina Viese Vivaldi participated in the ‘Strike for Climate’ which demands that our politicians take our future seriously and treat climate change as what it is: a crisis. Sophia, Lourdes, Elena and Fedora were featured in an article by News.com.au, Uprising’: Greens leader joins school student climate protest’  which quoted Sophia saying that “We don’t have a voice, but this is how we get one,” Ms Lark said and that “We’re really relying on other people to vote on our behalf in order for us to have a future.”

Below is the speech which Sophia presented to Yr 11:

Good morning Yr 11, as some of you know, we had a Yr 11 group go on the climate strike! This strike was such a fantastic experience; we had the opportunity to hear from traditional landowners about the impacts of the coal mining industry on their lands and the nurses’ and midwives association about how climate change affects the health industry. We heard from young children from Lismore, who were six and eight, about how their homes were destroyed, how deeply their family, school, friends and childhoods were damaged – and why there needs to be change. There were bands who performed, people who shared their stories, and people who listened and raised their voices too. As we walked through the city with over 5000 people, it laid testament to the power of the young people and how we will make our voices heard. And we definitely did, as we stood outside the Liberal HQ, joined together, and promptly blasted music, listened to speeches, and provided some lovely chalk decorations to the road and walls! We also had the opportunity to connect with other young climate activists around Sydney!

One thing I have taken away from this is the fact that climate change affects everything, and everything affects climate change! Now that seems simple, an obvious fact, but I want everyone to understand that while standing up here and giving speeches, attending strikes, and the environment club may not be your cup of tea, you can all make a change in areas you are passionate about. Because without addressing the current health crisis, the lack of sustainable building materials, the economy, the law, the forestry/land management industries, current conflicts, coral reef bleaching, animal abuse, the way we view history, the impacts of COVID-19, machines, technology, how businesses are run, how we support and value those in need, and so on, we will not see change regarding our climate.

If we do not lift up the voices of artists of all kinds, we will not challenge the way we think, feel, and see, which desperately needs to be challenged. We will not see a shift from the stigma of pursuing a career or even an education in the arts and humanities, which deserves more recognition for its role in shaping society, and the hard work, pure dedication, and community cultivated in this sector. If we do not support arising athletes, we will not see a shift in the sporting industry’s often toxic and taxing environment, nor the shift that sport should not be seen as a commodity but rather a space full of talented, passionate and hardworking people. If we do not support each other and ourselves and challenge the way our system currently works, we will not see cases of mental health issues in teenagers lessen. Something I, and all of you, are affected by each day.

What I want you to take out of this is that you should do what you are passionate about at the end of the day. And, assuming you aim to make the world a better place, and I hope all of you are, everything counts, and everything is connected. Please use your skills to lift yourself and others up, to change what needs to be changed. And something I can promise you is that change will happen.

Well done to Sophia for presenting her reflection on the ‘Stike for Climate’ at the Year Assembly and to Lourdes, Elena, Fedora, Marina, Lily, Jenna and Phoebe for their participation in the strike and for being the voice of our future generations.

Uniform Blitz

This week, the Secondary School had a uniform blitz. It is important that all Yr 11 students wear their blazers to and from school and that the Winter uniform is to be worn. Hoodies are not permitted to be worn at school and students are not to wear sports uniform during the day at school. Dress hems need to come down to the knees and no jewellery is to be worn at school.

Burn Bright – Monday 23 May

Yr 9 will be involved in the Burn Bright incursion on Monday. Over the course of the day, students will be split and the program will be geared specifically for each gender.

BOYS SELF-EFFICACY PROGRAM – ‘Ignite’

The journey to manhood has never been an easy one and involves a search for identity and meaning. IGNITE is designed to challenge traditional concepts of manhood and to help young boys grow into men with strength, integrity and respect. With only the boys together, the program is designed specifically to engage young men with new thoughts and positive messages about how they can live happier and more genuine lives. This program becomes a catalyst for challenging conversations about being a man in the 21st century. The day explores three important values for growing into a man: strength, integrity and respect. This program will be a very active in nature and allows boys to be boys.

GIRLS SELF-EFFICACY PROGRAM – ‘Spark’

There are so many influences on young women which make their journey through adolescence sometimes tricky and conflicting. Having to navigate peer pressure, body image, media influences, expectations, online and digital spaces and much more can be daunting and often girls find it difficult to deal with these changes that are occurring. With only the girls together, this program will discover how young women can seek to respect themselves and others in their immediate worlds. SPARK provides the tools which help young women build confidence, positively express themselves, understand their values, cultivate gratitude and perspective and build their capacity to be resilient. The program aims to enhance emotional intelligence and empowers students to build positive and healthy relationships with their peers, parents and their community.

Happiness and Gratitude

“Happiness is not the result of bouncing from one joy to the next; achieving happiness typically involves times of considerable discomfort. It’s more than simply a positive mood, it’s a state of wellbeing that encompasses living a good life.” Dr Michael Carr-Gregg

Happiness is defined as the balance of positive and negative emotions, combined with overall life satisfaction. Happiness and gratitude have been studied in positive psychology for many years and researchers have found that gratitude is always strongly associated with greater happiness. Although everyone has their own definition of happiness, many of us want to feel more positive emotions than negative ones. However, negative emotions are still important. They have a lot to teach us and alert us when things need to change. Practising gratitude helps people feel more of the positive emotions, enable us to relish good experiences, improve our overall health, deal with adversity and build strong relationships.

This has been communicated with students via email, and a reminder will be sent out early next week.

Resilience

Resilience is important for a young person’s mental health. It is their ability to bounce back from failure, challenges, adversity and stress. It’s not something that kids have or don’t have but a skill that kids develop over time as they grow. Building resilience not only helps a young person deal with current difficulties, but it also helps develop a resilient mindset that will help them deal with challenges later in life. All young people are capable of working through challenges and coping with stress, but they require guidance and support from a charismatic adult role model.

A Farewell and New Beginnings

Last week we farewelled Mr Atkins and thanked him for being an exceptional Year Advisor – several students spoke about the care and support he has offered our Year Group, and that he will be missed. We wish him well in his new role and cannot wait to see him on next year’s camp!

I am very excited to be stepping into the role of Year 8 Advisor, alongside Mr Horan, who has been appointed the Assistant Year 8 Advisor. We both look forward to continuing to encourage and assist Year 8 as they navigate their journey at Redlands.

Asking for Feedback … from Your Children

As shared by our Deputy Principal, Mr Corcoran, in this week’s Note Day, one of the key drivers of our new strategic plan is the further development of a positive and supportive culture of wellbeing, and a new initiative this year to help us achieve this aim will be administering the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) Social-Emotional Wellbeing Survey with students in Yrs 3-12. Junior School students will be completing the survey next week.

Connected to feedback, it reminded me of any article I read and shared a few years ago that explored the notion of parents asking their children for feedback at home on how to be a better parent. While being the best parent for my children is something I regularly think about, getting feedback from them on this matter hasn’t been…….yet.

Following similar principles to workplace surveys, the article suggests that upward feedback from our children can be a great way to help us identify ways in which we can improve as parents; as well as also knowing what to continue to do. It advocates asking your children the following three questions and sharing the questions with them in advance:

  1. What do I do that you like or that you’d like to see more of?
  2. What do I do that you don’t like or has a negative impact on you?
  3. What would make me a better parent?

As I read the questions, I also saw the opportunity to flip the questions for my children to reflect on themselves too! But the emphasis was on the need to actively engage in the listening part of this process and also without judgment. Then, when it’s your turn to talk, to be calm and open, mindful that your children might be taking a risk in sharing their feelings. Based on the feedback you receive; you would then probably have some ideas about what you can do differently.

I hope this may serve as a prompt for you as it has for me and just as feedback helps us in the context of growth at School, I look forward to getting a better sense of how to be a better parent; arguably the most important role we play.

Junior School Student Recognition – Kids Giving Back

Our Principal, Mr Webber, and I were proud to receive an email from Gabrielle Morrisey Hansen, CEO of the organisation Kids Giving Back, sharing how a number of Redlands students and their families spent time volunteering in Term 1 and over the last school holidays to help others through this organisation.

Kids Giving Back is a charity whose mission is to create the next generation of generosity through meaningful, hands-on experiences for young people to give back to others. Through charity partners, they arrange opportunities for children aged 6-18 years old and their families to aid and support for people experiencing food scarcity or hardship.

These students are among over 500 young people who produced over 7000 hot meals, salads, fruit kebabs, breakfast boxes, snack packs, care packs and decorated tote bags which were distributed to 13 charities around Sydney. They also were especially helpful in folding and packing new clothes for over 8000 vulnerable people, many of whom were affected by this year’s floods. We deeply appreciate their service to others and the kindness they have extended.

I will duly acknowledge these students in assembly next week but I wanted to also do so through this wider community communication as well. Thank you to the following Junior School students who participated in one or more of the programs during Term 1 or the recent school holidays:

Maddison Thomas (Yr 3); Leo McCarthy, Hugo Menegazzo, Poppy Pope, Vincent Okhovat, Luke Spencer (Yr 4); Tadhg Lavan, Hayden Thomas (Yr 5); Ethan Spencer (Yr 6)

To hear of our Redlands students embracing the concept of contributing back into the community is heart-warming and a wonderful example of our students living our School Values whilst making a difference to the lives of others.

Junior Campus Open Morning

On Tuesday, we welcomed over 160 people to our Junior Campus Open Morning for prospective families, the first time we have been able to host this in-person event for two years. As well as hearing from some of our Senior staff, our visitors thoroughly enjoyed hearing from two Yr 11 students, Samantha Hely and Leachlan Binnekamp who effusively shared some of their fondest memories and experiences from their time on the Junior Campus in those formative years and how they have lived life to the full in their journey through Redlands. Having seen Samantha and Lachlan in those younger years, it filled me with immense pride to listen to them speak as young adults and share their Redlands story thus far. Following on from this, our guests were taken on student-led tours with many of our Yr 2 and Yr 6 students involved in this part of the morning. As I commented to parents, an important aspect of these types of events is that we choose different students each time to afford as many students as possible with these types of leadership opportunity and I congratulate the students involved in these tours; we have already received numerous complimentary messages on both their confidence and openness as they led groups around the school.

Lismore Appeal (until Friday 27 May)

Thank you to families who have been part of our initial stationery donation drive to support The Northern River Children’s Services in Lismore. Our students are creating boxes filled with donated school and art supplies to replenish materials lost during the floods. Students are also making cards for families that are going through the heartbreaking process of rebuilding their lives. We know that this project will provide the students with a sense of both empathy and purpose as we remind our NSW neighbours in Lismore, that they are cared for and not forgotten. We encourage families to support this opportunity in the coming weeks as we strive to make a difference to this community.

Sustainability Initiatives

Waste Free Wednesday starting next week

Next Wednesday 25 May, the Junior Campus will begin our student-led ‘Waste Free Wednesday’ sustainability initiative. A waste free lunch box is one that only contains packaging that can be composted or reused (such as a banana peel or reusable containers). Families are encouraged to consider this option and it also might be an opportunity to pack your child’s lunchbox with them, discussing what could be used.

Single Use Water Bottles

A reminder that from Monday 30 May (Week 6), our Junior Campus will cease all water bottle sales. In the last two years, we have installed numerous filtered water bubblers and refilling stations throughout the campus, which get very good usage from the students. We know that nearly every student brings a water bottle to school each day and they are permitted to drink and rehydrate in class, as needed. As is already the case, if students forget to bring a water bottle to school, they will be encouraged to use a bubbler or will be provided with a paper cup.

This presentation will target parents and carers of students in Years 6 through 12; however, all Redlands parents and carers are welcome.

Flu Season

Pleasingly, we have seen a significant decrease in the number of student COVID-19 positive cases over the first four weeks of this term.

A Special Visit From A-League Football Team, Macarthur FC

This week we were very excited to welcome members of the Macarthur Football Club to Redlands. A few of the teams’ key players held sessions with our Prep students where they played mini games and carried out skills and drills. All our Prep students were so excited and so grateful for the time that they spent with them.

A highlight of the session was welcoming the Redlands Rhino and the Macarthur Bull mascots onto the oval! So much fun and a big thank you Ms Wilson, Mr Dunne and Mr Gerry Gomez for organising this day for us all.

Junior Campus Open Morning

160 families joined us in Dunnet Hall this week to experience our Junior Campus. It was thrilling to have this event in person and to be able to share an authentic Redlands experience. We were privileged to hear from two Yr 11 students, Samantha Hely and Lachlan Binnekamp. They spoke effusively of their journey at Redlands thus far from Preschool to Yr 11 and it was great for parents to see how students grow in every sense as they move up through the School.

Our Years 6 and 2 tour guides did a tremendous job of taking families on tours and showcasing key areas of the Junior Campus. The feedback from families was overwhelmingly positive from these tours and to say we are proud of our students is an understatement. They were a credit to the school and to themselves.

Waste Free Wednesday: Starting Monday 23 May

Next Wednesday we will begin our Waste Free Wednesday sustainability initiative. We are encouraging our students to bring ‘a waste free lunch box’ which is one that only contains packaging that can be composted or reused (such as a banana peel or reusable containers).

As we will be discussing what ‘waste free’ means in our classes, it might be an idea to have your child help pack their lunchbox, discussing what could be used. This opens up the dialogue relating to waste and can even help you plan waste free ideas for Wednesdays ahead.

Our Yr 2 sustainability leaders will help lead the initiative by collecting compost materials and helping spread the sustainability message in Prep.

Thank you for helping us to not only get this off the ground but also by helping us to make sure this isn’t just a tokenistic activity but a lifestyle choice for a better future.

Learn to be Safe with Emmy and Friends

Over the next five weeks Act for Kids will be conducting their ‘Learn to be safe with Emmy and Friends’ protective behaviour program. The program focuses on what is safe and unsafe behaviour and provides strategies to help students navigate what to do when they need help. It is never too early to start teaching these skills to young children and this program does so with age-appropriate visuals and conversations to help guide the process.

If you would like to know more about the program, please talk to your class teachers or to Dean of Students P-6 Katie -Louise Clinton.

Return to Parent Borrowing

Parent borrowing from the Lucy Hill Library will recommence next week. The library will be open from 8am-8.20am and again at 3pm-3.30pm. Parents may borrow ten books at a time for a two-week loan period.

The emailing and collection of book bags from the school foyer will now cease. If you currently have books at home, please leave them in the foyer or bring them back to the library when you have finished with them.

We are certainly looking forward to sharing the library and all it has to offer with you again.

Redlands House and Transition Gold

Independence

At Redlands House we encourage strongly encourage independence. We love seeing the children carry their own bags, pack away their belongings and look after their food containers. As children grow and develop, they become more able to do things for themselves, to express themselves and to explore their world independently. Independence contributes to the development of self-esteem, identity and wellbeing. Doing something for yourself produces a powerful sense of achievement and success. When children have opportunities to make choices, to attempt tasks for themselves, and to take on increasing responsibilities, their sense of themselves as competent members of society grows.

Extended Care Bookings

Extended Care (Late Room) is available from 2.30pm to 6.00pm for all Redlands House and Transition Gold Students. Extended Care is held at Redlands House each school day, afternoon tea is included. For Extended Care bookings please email – Extendedcare@redlands.nsw.edu.au

WINTER SPORT

Netball

A number of close fixtures last weekend across the teams, with NBSIC playing host to some tight matches especially across the Inter A and Inter D fixtures. The Inter A team were in a back and forth tussle with the Barker Inter A team, with the lead from either team not stretching past 3 or 4 goals, there were some great passages of play throughout the 4th quarter however it was Barker who ultimately came out on top with a 30-33 win. The Inter D fixture started off with a slow start, the girls taking a while to get going with Barker jumping out to an early 8 goal lead, but the Redlands team didn’t let that get to them, capitalising on a few mistakes throughout the 2nd and 3rd quarter, they then looked to dominate the 4th with some crisp passing displays through the centre court lead to Redlands taking control of the match eventually running away with a 27-23 victory.

Water Polo

We are seeing some huge improvements in the water polo particularly across the Inter teams, with a number of new players really coming into their own in the last few fixtures.

The draw for both the Senior and Inter competitions can be found on the Northern Beaches Water Polo Academy website, there may be some last minute changes and we will endeavour to communicate these changes as quick as possible.

A reminder also that ALL students need to complete the online registration via the LINK HERE

Football

Our Boys Football program had a tough Round 3 against St Patrick’s College. Despite the results not going in Redlands favour, there were some fantastic performances on the day. With our 1st Boys narrowly going down in a 0-1 loss, they played extremely well against one of the toughest teams in the competition. A shoutout to the 2nd Boys Football team who also bounced back in the second half, making some fantastic adjustments and holding their own against a strong St Pat’s side. Our Girls Football program had some great matches on Saturday. With both our Junior A and 1st Girls continuing their undefeated streak, they had a 10-0 win and a 2-0 win against SACS and Oakhill respectively. Our 2nd Girls also put up a great fight against a well drilled SACS 1st team and despite not getting the result they were after, they showed some great determination against a strong side. Sadly due to the closure of Macquarie University fields with the recent wet weather, there were a few of our teams missed out on a fixture during Round 3 but we hope that all students are looking forward to Round 4 this Saturday. With the majority of our teams playing at our home field, Macquarie University, we encourage students to arrive early and stay after their games to support our other Football teams.

Hockey

In Round 3 both the 1st and 2nd Girls Hockey teams played against Barker College. Knowing the strength of the Barker 1st team this year, the Redlands 1st Girls knew they would have their work cut out for them. A fantastic start by Redlands saw a very early goal by Iona in the first minute of the game. Shortly after Barker were able to get one of their own on the board and before the half time break the scores were level at 2-2 with the Redlands 1st Girls were playing some of their best hockey to date. Another Barker goal saw Barker take the lead 2-3 but the game was evenly matched between the two teams. A few lapses in the final minutes and some tired legs saw Barker manage to put away two more goals, with the final score of 2-5 not truly reflecting the closeness of the match.

The 2nd girls played fabulously against a very strong Barker 3 team. It was a tough match for the Redlands 2nd Girls that unfortunately ended in a 1-4 loss. Despite the strong opposition, there were some excellent passages of play from the Redlands Girls. A special thanks to both Annie and Amelie who played one half each in goals and did a tremendous job. Some great teamwork led to a fantastic goal by Carolina to get Redlands on the scoreboard.

Cross Country & Athletics Training

We will continue to offer Cross Country training on Friday afternoons throughout Term 2 to interested students. These sessions are open to all students and will not only prepare students for the Cross Country Carnival but will also assist students participating in the 2022 Representative Winter Sports Season.

Time:                           3.30pm-5.00pm

Venue:                         Balmoral Oval

AFL

We are looking forward to round 4 this weekend, for all teams this weekend this Friday 20th and Saturday 21st May. The draws are available on the Redlands Pulse AFL, please ensure you check the Redlands Rhino for the most up to date fixture information each week.

Good luck to all our teams!

Tennis

Despite our ISA away games being cancelled due to wet weather, home teams were able to claim victory against St Pauls – some intense matches that went down to the game score!

There were also some great matches in the Redlands Internal Competition. We are happy to see new players progressing with their formal competition skills.

A reminder for Round 4 (21 May) this weekend:

  • If you are unable to attend Saturday’s competition, please email Caitlin Wong by no later than 12pm on Friday.
  • Please check the draw and playing pairs list to see when/where/who you are playing.
  • Students need to arrive at the venue at least 15 minutes before start time.
  • For any questions, please email Caitlin Wong.

Good luck for this weekend’s fixtures!

Rubgy

Central Coast Grammar vs Redlands – 21 May – Macquarie Sporting Fields

Despite the constant cancelations due to wet weather, the disjointed and, at times frustrating lack of Rugby for our boys, the 2022 ISA Rugby Season will finally kick off this weekend in tough fixtures against Central Coast Grammar.

Due to the lack of conditioning and our inability to train consistently, the matches will be modified to allow all players to get match times as well as maximising our attacking options across the field. I could not be more excited to see all Age-Groups run out on the weekend and represent our program. We have seen a tremendous amount of development across the group and, in speaking with each of the Captains, I know how pumped they are to lead out their teams.

For this weekend, our Captains are the following.

Redlands Under 13s

  • Freddie Hart – Captain
  • Charlie Reeves – Vice Captain

Redlands Under 14s

  • Henry Preece – Captain
  • Leonardo Migliucci – Vice Captain

Redlands Under 15s

  • Max Perry – Captain
  • Oliver Cooke – Vice Captain

Redlands Under 16s

  • Alfie Leach – Captain
  • Hugo Scott – Vice Captain
  • Miles Eden – Vice Captain

Redlands 1st XV / Opens

  • Hugh Sellar – Captain
  • Will Pearson – Vice Captain
  • Samuel Chubb – Vice Captain

These appointments are initially week to week, watching as these leaders develop and build into their role. Within each Age-Group there is a wonderful core group of leaders and I could not be more encouraged to see each of these students take their opportunity to lead out their teams.

  • Hugo Scott – Under 16s Vice Captain and Fly Half
  • Miles Eden – Under 16s Vice Captain and Lock
  • Kane Thompson – Under 16s Openside Flanker
  • Max Stepniak – Under 16s Wing
  • Joshua Hicks – 1stXV Vice Captain and Centre/Wing
  • Will Pearson – 1stXV Vice Captain and Centre

All of these boys had their moments on the day, each one appearing on selectors notes and getting ranked within their positions. In the forwards, Miles and Kane were everywhere, building combinations with Stannies and Oakhill boys, they worked their way around the field with powerful runs between both of them. In the backs, Alfie Leach quickly realised that he had to hunt for the ball, working off his wing to not only make a number of quick runs off his flyhalf but also being, as usual, brilliant with his defence and chop tackle. Our quick steppers, Josh Hicks and Max Stepniak, were highlighted by the selectors for their elusiveness and effectiveness in attack. Hugo Scott and Will Pearson, in the Under 16s and Opens trials respectively, were both identified early, their tackle busting runs and ability to work off their playmakers had them highlighted as contenders for the final selections.

In the end, with possible / probables matches drawing to a close, Redlands should be incredibly proud in having three boys selected across the Representative Teams.

For the Under 16s ISA Rep. Squad which will travel to Oakhill for further selection trials, the following boys were selected:

  • Joshua Hicks
  • Hugo Scott

For the Opens ISA Rep Squad I am pleased to announce the following selection.

  • William Pearson

In addition to these three boys, a further three boys are shadows for the Under 16s meaning, should injuries occur, further Redlands students could be called into the squads.

We as a community should be incredibly proud of what these three boys have accomplished. For Will, being selected in the backline as a Year 11 is an amazing accomplishment, competing with over 18 boys for just his selected position. Josh and Hugo should be so encouraged by their selection, their second selections having made the squad last year in 2021. To put that in context, Josh and Hugo have now competed with over 32 students for their positions across these last two years, each time, forcing the selectors hands and demanding their place across the squads.

I could not be prouder of these students and cannot wait to them perform during the NSW Schools Championships.

Drama and Theatre

“We must all do theatre to find out who we are and to discover who we could become” – Augusto Boal

Augusto Boal, a political theatre activist who pushed the boundaries on social commentary and action believed it was in Theatre that we look at society and aim for change. Recently, I watched the technical rehearsal for Yr 9 Documentary Drama and was immensely proud of the sophisticated work they are developing about different social issues. It made me reflect on the importance of the art form and how we can use these experiences to look at ourselves and the way we would like to interact with others and the world. Now, more than ever is an important time to positively reconnect with family and friends as we very much heading toward normality.

Gala Arts

The performance audition submissions are now closed for Gala Arts. Excitingly, we are now opening submissions for the Gala Arts Photography section. All the information is below and can be found on iLearn. Please email drama@redlands.nsw.edu to be added to the page for the submission.

Theatresports

Intermediate Team

Excitingly, the intermediate team have made it through to the semi finals. We await with bated breath of their achievements on Tuesday 31st May at Linfield Learning College.

Senior Team

On Tuesday night the Senior Theatresports team competed at Linfield Learning College in the preliminary heats. Overall, they placed 8th and should be extremely proud of their achievements. Congratulations to all involved.

Yr 10 Absurd Theatre Performance Images

Once again, congratulations to all of the Yr 10 Drama students on their fantastic performances at the Yr 10 Absurd Curriculum Showcase Evening. Below are some images from over the two nights.

Senior Curriculum Performance Evenings

In the upcoming weeks, we have an array of senior curriculum performance evenings, showcasing their classwork over the semester. We encourage friends and family to attend to support all students involved. Please see the information below for these evenings.

Extra-subject Drama and Theatre

Classes are going well. If you want to enrol your child please contact drama@redlands.nsw.edu.au. Some classes are at capacity and have a waitlist.

Reminder: A friendly reminder to communicate with your child about their extra-curricular classes in the morning. We have had cases where students are in the car line or their designated pick up spot and have needed to be located before class starts. Please ensure any absences are sent to drama@redlands.nsw.edu.au or your child’s class tutor prior to the lesson.

Highlight of the Week: Redlands House

Creative Kids Wednesday Class: Students are playing “Follow the Leader/Pass the Pattern” which gives them focus and provides everyone with the opportunity to lead the group.

Highlight of the Week: Preparatory Music Theatre Kindergarten, Yr 1 and Yr 2

Today we sang through A Song Of Peace and added some harmonies and new actions. The Yr 2 singers really encouraged and supported the kindy singers as we challenged ourselves with holding parts. Well done to everyone!

Private Tuition Studio Concert Series

Weeks 5-7 will see our Semester One studio concerts launched across both Junior and Senior Campuses. These lunchtime concerts offer a relaxed opportunity for singers and instrumentalists from P-12 to share their journey with a supportive audience of family and friends (whom we are delighted to welcome on site to join us!). ‘The clock striking one’ will see the radical pivot wherein classrooms need to magically turn into performance spaces! Thank you in advance for your grace and assistance with these transitions ready for our music sharing time.

Senior Music Festival – Friday 17 June 2022 6pm

We are just four weeks away from ‘THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME’ Senior Music Festival extravaganza on the stage of the Concert Hall at the Chatswood Concourse.  This is shaping up to be an evening of joy for the whole Redlands community from youngest to oldest. Book a family night out and join us in Chatswood!

The Concourse/Ticketek have advised that our Box Office opening has been delayed just a touch further (until early next week) – but rest assured we will send a green-light correspondence piece home immediately to give you the ‘ready set go’ you need to book your tickets as soon as that link becomes live!

The venue was packed last year, so book early to ensure you don’t miss out!

As is our fun tradition, we’re stockpiling SMF ‘merch’ (including a limited edition G.O.A.T. hoodie!!) and other terrific prizes that we can’t wait to award to the students who achieve the highest ticket sales!

A reminder that in addition to our usual weekly ensemble and Year 12 rehearsals, the mandatory whole cast rehearsal is coming up on Sunday 5 June 2022. All cast members are required to be in attendance at this day as we finalise musical details, wardrobe and choreography. More information to come!

New Lockers

In seeking to address the needs of our growing Music program, we are thrilled to announce the installation of a further 48 music instrument lockers this week – strategically addressing the housing needs for our smaller instruments. New locker allocation will be prioritised for those on the waiting list, so it’s a fantastic time to make sure your expression of interest has been lodged if you would like a locker soon.

All forms are housed on PULSE, (alongside all our other sign up forms for ensembles and private tuition!).

When in doubt, please reach out to our wonderful administrators on each campus who will be happy to assist you.
