Issue 14 2021 - 13 May 2021

From the Principal

It has been a privilege to have Dr Tessa Opie, from inyourskin, working with the School this week as we embark on a three-year partnership to review and develop the Relationships and Sexuality Education program across the School.

Dr Opie presented two workshops to Yr 11 and 12 students as well as presenting to all academic staff across the School, parents on Monday evening and then two full ‘train the trainer’ days with PDHPE staff and Pastoral Care leaders.

Dr Opie was full of praise for the culture and feel of the School, the engagement of our students and the passion and the commitment of the staff, who want us to have the best program in the country, to support all students in their Social and Emotional Wellbeing.

As communicated, due to the strong interest in Dr Opie’s presentation to parents, her address has been recorded and is available to view until Monday 24 May 2021 via this link. It can also be accessed through the Secondary School page in Redlands Pulse.

Dr Opie will return in late July to run a series of workshops for students in Yrs 6 to 10. The content of these presentations will be communicated to parents prior to the sessions being held. Thank you to all parents who completed the short survey regarding the program and key aspects that you believe are important to address. Information received from parents and students has been very useful and will help inform the development, scope and sequence of our program as it is reviewed and implemented.

I know that staff have already greatly appreciated the research-based approach that informs Dr Opie’s practice and the wealth of resources provided to support the program going forward.

I greatly appreciated receiving positive feedback on the sessions from various members of the community. The highlight for me was an email sent to Ms Van de Peer and me from an alumni whom we had previously met with to discuss how we could improve our programs from her perspective. To have her mention how many positive comments she had received from students and parents regarding the steps we were taking and the workshops that have been offered was moving.

The work has only just begun and I know that our staff will continue to drive us as we look forward to further engagement with Dr Opie in the years ahead.

Mosman Youth Art Prize 2021

I sincerely congratulate Year 12 HSC student Carmen Brisson, who has won the Mosman Youth Art Prize 2021 with her artwork Is consumerism a dream or a nightmare? 2021 (Photograph). This was announced last Friday night at the Mosman Art Gallery. More details about this significant achievement can be found in the Year 12 section of Note Day.

This is Redlands

Our on campus engagement with the Redlands School community continued this week as we welcomed parents and carers to the ‘Supporting Young People in Relationships and Sexuality Education’ parent workshop hosted by Dr Tessa Opie and our Principal, Mr Stephen Webber. This workshop was mainly aimed at parents and carers of students from Yrs 6 to 12, however, a number of our Junior School parents and carers also attended.  A reminder that Dr Opie will be running a future workshop that will focus on parents and carers of our younger students.  We are delighted to be working in partnership with Dr Opie in the review and development of this important area and her parent presentation can be viewed here until Monday 24 May.

I am constantly reminded of the importance of sharing our impressive facilities with our parents and carers and am excited to announce that we will be hosting tours of the Redlands Learning Hub in Terms 3 and 4.  The dates and times of these tours will be released shortly. In the interim, I invite those who are interested to view our virtual tour of the hub that was developed last year.  As we continue to develop further community engagement opportunities on campus, we encourage a continued connection to the significant and diverse experience of our Class and Year Group parents, the RPFA and Friends of Groups that support our many and varied community activities.

Earlier this week I had the privilege of viewing the wonderful range of creative artwork submitted by students from across the School to feature on specially commissioned greeting cards. Of the numerous passionately created artworks, 12 were chosen for production and these are now available for pre-order

The Redlands Online Auction is up and running with some wonderful items up for bid. The auction is open to all and will close on Wednesday, 26 May at 2.30pm.  Get your bids in early!  Proceeds raised through both the auction and the sale of the Arts Cards will be directed to the Belinda Oxley Scholarship Appeal.

And finally, a reminder that the Redlands Parents Prayer Group provides our current parent community with the opportunity to come together in prayer. The Group is now meeting in Week 4 of each term in the David Armstrong Room at St Peter’s Church (with parking located on Waters Rd), with the next gathering scheduled for this evening from 8.00 to 9.00pm.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Head of Secondary School

At times it’s almost astounding how much we can achieve in one school week. The past week has been particularly fulsome and as a community, we have accomplished much.

It was reassuring to witness Yr 10 tackle their Examination Block and National Minimum Standards Tests with maturity and confidence, especially as they are about to embark on some significant decision-making in the coming weeks. I know so many of them exerted substantial effort in their preparation for the exams, and anticipate strong results. I have been privileged to engage in conversation with a group of Yr 10 students this week, who shared their experience of the Examination Block with me. It was affirming to hear about their commitment to study and to witness their developed sense of self. Attending Industry Day tomorrow should further cement this growth, allowing them to move out into the world to explore and consider their place in a broader context. I wish Yr 10 all the best for their Industry experiences tomorrow and look forward to hearing their stories when they return next week.

Yr 7 and 9 students engaged in their NAPLAN tests with energy and perspective this week. In my English lesson with Yr 7 today, they were full of their usual vigour despite the intensity of their week. As we move into the half way point of the term, we once again approach a period of assessment submission and testing. Yr 7, 8 and 9 students will all be responsible for completing a range of tasks this term to represent their learning, understanding and skills. As well as subject-specific skills, organisation, collaboration and communication will also be tested as we anticipate students juggling their assessment preparation with sport, co-curricular and family commitments. I strongly encourage students to access the Study Centre in the Redlands  Learning Hub, open before and after school, to access subject-specific teachers for support and feedback.

Tomorrow a communication will be made available to parents and students in Yr 11 and 12 detailing the workshops and Study Centre access for the upcoming holiday period. Dedicated HSC and IB Workshops will be available for Yr 12 students on Level 2 of the Learning Hub across the three-week break. Level 3 will be accessible to all students in Yr 11 and 12 who wish to engage in Independent Study in the final week of the break. We expect a significant amount of Yr 12 students to access this space during Week 3, as they did in the previous holiday period. This year we will be inviting Yr 11 students to also access the Learning Hub for private and collaborative study. We hope that by sharing the space with Yr 12, our Yr 11 students will continue to adopt and develop their own independent learning practices.

Dr Tessa Opie’s presentations to Yr 11 and 12 students on Monday were well received and engaging. Her focus on developing students’ sexual health literacy is designed to enable the growth of confident, competent young people who care about themselves and others. What particularly resonated with our senior students was the skills-based approach and the strategies offered for developing a broad set of relationship skills, with which to navigate both sexual and non-sexual interactions. We look forward to welcoming her back in Term 3 when she will deliver age and stage appropriate presentations to Yr 6-10 students.

Dr Opie’s presentation to parents can be viewed via this link until Monday 24 May. It can also be accessed through the Secondary School page in Redlands Pulse.

At our Yr 12 Leadership Meeting this week, Mr Webber was a guest speaker. He spoke about the challenges and joys of leadership and referenced Jim Collins’ leadership text, Good to Great. One insight that Mr Webber provided was about how ‘great’ leaders display humble leadership, and enable other people to shine and grow. They also care more about the success of the organisation rather than their own individual success. He posed a question to Yr 12 leaders: ‘In thinking about your leadership, take a step back and think about why you are in this?’.

He reassured Yr 12 that leaders sometimes have to make tough decisions and recognise that leadership is not always smooth sailing and there are some tough experiences along the way. He was able to succinctly connect this aspect of leadership with some specific Yr 12 experiences, as reflected in a recent Student Voice Prefect Survey, such as managing prefect duties with learning priorities. He spoke of the competing demands leaders face and the need to prioritise these demands. Notably, he affirmed that we often grow the most during times of difficulty.

If you have been finding it tough, recognise the diverse resources around you, and work together collectively as a year group. Step up and show initiative which is a powerful action.

Mr Webber concluded his presentation by complimenting Yr 12 and expressed his great respect for them as a cohort. When they broke into groups after this presentation to work in teams for the upcoming Winter Solstice Fair, it was easy to see how well they do work together as a cohort and how energised they are to serve their peers as student leaders.

Wishing you all a wonderful end to the week and a restful weekend. I am looking forward to heading out to Sport on Saturday morning and seeing more examples of Redlands students working together, learning together and achieving much.

Chaplain

Chapel services are a key part of the Redlands wellbeing and pastoral care program. This is a small window each week where students are encouraged to tend to their souls (their inner-self). This continues to recognise the importance Spirituality and Religiosity have in supporting and promoting student wellbeing which is widely supported by Psychological research. The Chapel time is reflective of our connection to the Anglican tradition. The students collectively sing (COVID permitting), pray, reflect on the bigger questions of life and worship. It is so important for students to consider how they connect to something bigger than themselves. In the Anglican tradition of valuing the bible as the Word of God the students are encouraged to engage with the text. There is a talk that reflects, explains and applies biblical passages to the modern context, inviting students to find their connection to these timeless books.

It has been my goal, as Chaplain, to incorporate as many students as possible to contribute to the chapel services. I am always open to students making suggestions and participating. Presently we are singing the song Oceans on the request of students. We were surprised and delighted by a Yr 11 group praying the Lord’s prayer in Spanish. We are likewise looking forward to similar in Chinese and French. I think this is a lovely reminder that people following Jesus are represented in many nations and language groups.

Music is a clear way to contribute and serve the school community in the chapel context and so I am delighted to announce the launching of the Chapel Jam iLearn Course. This new initiative by Mr Mathew Owen is to help facilitate any student who would like to contribute in small or more consistent ways. This page will give the schedule, practice time, music score, basically anything a student may need to know to participate. Students can contact me or Mr Owen to get access. It has been great over this year to see Yr 7 step up with regular contributions of drums, violin and keyboard. We are keen to see some Yr 7 singers and likewise singers from Yrs 8 and 9.

Some of our Yr 11 students will be using this service opportunity to be their CAS contribution and this is a wonderful way to share their skills and time for the benefit of others.

Chapel for some is a new experience, others a bit of a mystery and others the highlight of the week. For me it is a source of continual delight as I see students reflecting, participating and thinking.

God Bless

Dr Tessa Opie

Students and staff welcomed Dr Tessa Opie, Founder and Director of ‘In your skin’, to Redlands this week. Tessa is a renowned and well-respected relationships and sexuality education expert, advocating for healthy and consenting relationships, with a sex-positive, evidence-based and harm reduction focus. She presented to Yrs 11 and 12 last Monday, on key topics such as sexual health, impact of pornography on sexual values, consent and sexual communication, and navigating respectful relationships. For more info please see here. Jess Howard and I also attended a full day workshop this week to further build our knowledge and understanding in this area, in order to best support Yr 11.

Year 6 Transition Session, report by Jemma Davies and Alex Gibbs

Last Monday morning the current group of Yr 6 students from the Junior School, along with many of their parents, visited the Senior Campus for a short Q&A session and an introductory parent tour around the school, to ease the transition of moving from the Junior School to the Secondary School next year. Together with three Yr 7 students, we sat on a panel and answered questions from both the students and the parents whilst also sharing personal experiences about our transition into the Secondary School and our current learning journey. Additionally, Mr Webber made a short introduction, followed by Ms Van de Peer and Mr Guha. They collectively gave a presentation on the introduction to Yr 7, covering a range of topics including the structure of Core and Tutor classes, subject choices and life outside academic learning. The mix of students in the panel allowed both an older and younger perspective to be shared surrounding the transition, which additionally provided insight to the audience about some of the inter-year relationships between Secondary School students, such as the Peer Support Program. Following on from this, a group of Yr 11 students took the attending parents on a brief tour of the school, with focus on some of our key learning spaces, including the Learning Hub and the Roseby Building. Parents visited a variety of classrooms with different subjects and year groups where they were able to experience how learning differs throughout the year levels and the different branches of subjects offered throughout each year level, including Science, Design and Technology and Languages. Overall, this experience was a good way to start off the transition into Yr 7 and create connections with the junior years.

Platinum Girls Luncheon 2021 by Sam Virtue

Several other students and I were given the opportunity to help the Redlands Platinum Girls Luncheon 2021. We were all able to spend some time getting to know the women who attended Redlands over 50 years ago. I was able to talk to some amazing ladies about their widely different experiences at high school. Many of them shared their experiences in the L block (Languages building) of their morning prayers and commented on how it hasn’t changed since they attended. I met a wonderful lady who graduated in 1946, and she shared her experience of high school and how widely different the community differs from the present community. The ladies all shared amazing wisdom and offered a primary insight into the history of Redlands. This experience was shared by other students in my Year Group, and we were all able to tell each other what we learnt from these ladies and how widely different everyone is. I am very grateful to have had this opportunity to meet these lovely women.

Tennis Report by Joel Keith

Last weekend the Representative Tennis teams played our second games of the ISA draw. Compared to our first match up against Oakhill, in which our best Tennis wasn’t played, St Pius wasn’t as much of a challenge. It was good to win our first games of the season and as we often say “the comeback is greater than the setback.” That being said, at Tennis we always try to learn and reflect on games and experiences. We have always incorporated this mentality into our training and games and through this, great improvement has been found. Many of us haven’t played together before as doubles partners and are still getting used to playing with each other. It made me proud how quickly we were able to adapt and learn each other’s style of play. However, what I personally found most exciting was the development of many players during the summer months, these people reaching higher teams than before, showing how their hard work paid off. Playing Tennis, now more than ever, plays a massive role in how I deal with situations as a person. Tennis being a mentally straining sport (often fuelled by unnecessary anger and stress!) has allowed me to be able to take a step back, calm myself down and consider the big picture. This is where the learning and reflecting mentality helps me: after taking a step back I can analyse what is going well and what isn’t. Tennis being such an enjoyable sport takes the pressure away from my study and gives me a chance to catch up with mates and exercise. I will continue to play Tennis in my final two years of school and really look forward to what the competition and comradery has in store.

Year 10

Half Yearly Examination Wrap Up

I would like to highlight the maturity displayed by all of our Yr 10 students throughout the exam period. All students arrived on time and left promptly after their exam. It was also great to see Yr 10 maximising their writing time in the exam, working right up until the end time.  In the coming weeks, students will receive their marks back. As expected, there will be highs and lows. I hope that Yr 10 can use the time, post-exams, for insightful feedback from teachers which will assist them with understanding strategies which they can use to improve along with greater insight as to what subjects they choose in the lead up to subject selection.

Industry Day: Friday 14 May

Tomorrow, all of Yr 10 will be participating in the highly anticipated Industry Day. Students must make their way to and from their company venue. Students should have already done their transport research to ensure that they get to their company venues on time. All students are required to wear the dress code recommended by their company.

The general dress for Industry Day is smart casual which was highlighted to all of Yr 10 at last week’s Year Assembly. Students are not permitted to wear jeans and a t-shirt and need to look professional. Specific dress requirements and key pieces of information for each company were emailed to Yr 10 last weekend.

This experience for Yr 10  will be extremely valuable and beneficial and I really hope Yr 10 value this opportunity to step into the shoes of an employee at their selected company.

IGNITE: Mindfulness Reflection

For the last three weeks, the IGNITE Term Two team has met each Monday to discuss the Term Two theme: Resilience: Mindfulness and Gratitude. Last week, the IGNITE team was able to implement their knowledge by presenting to the Yr 10 cohort in Tutor Groups what mindfulness is, and how it can be used in the lead-up to exams and during exams and everyday mindfulness activities.

Below is a thoughtful reflection by Spencer Farrell and Will Pearson which was read by both of them at last week’s Year Assembly which summarises a few of the key takeaway messages from the Mindfulness session which was lead by all of the IGNITE team during Tutor Time.

In yesterday’s tutor, the IGNITE team members went to all the tutor groups to discuss what mindfulness is and how one should best achieve it. We established that to be mindful you must be in touch with your thoughts and feelings and be present in the moment. We also discussed the importance of mindfulness and how it can help improve your mental health.

To be mindful is not a process; it is an outcome that could be achieved through an array of different methods which are best suited to you. Whether that means playing sports and being physically active, or if that meant participating in yoga and trying to connect your mind and your body, the discussion yesterday demonstrated that there was no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way.

Yesterday we ensured that there were a variety of options available for you all to choose from, so you could truly achieve mindfulness in a way that suited you. So you weren’t forced to pretend like you were actually benefitting from something that may have only benefitted a few.

We believe that the idea of achieving mindfulness in a way that you are comfortable with and that can resonate with you is so important to remember.

We can often get caught up in trying to be like someone else, and sometimes it is really valuable to know an activity that will help you calm down, slow down, and breathe. To feel like you, not being forced to be someone else. And hopefully after yesterday’s activities,or today’s speech, you guys might be one step closer to discovering what mindfulness activity suits you.

So to conclude, whether you all took lots away from yesterday’s activities or you just sat there and enjoyed a break from the stresses from school, remember to be kind to yourself, to be present with who you are, and lastly to remember it’s ok to take a break, to slow down.

NAPLAN

Students are commended this week for approaching the NAPLAN Examinations with a positive and focused mindset.  Several students left the Writing Exam on Tuesday discussing the creative stories they had written and proud of their abilities.

Dodgeball Competition

Every other Wednesday when students have a chance to bring their ideas for service and leadership forward, Alex Tanner decided to share her idea for organising a Dodgeball Competition. As details were being coordinated, students thought it would work well to run this competition during NAPLAN week to allow for some energy to be released prior to testing. With the help of Luke Barwise, Joseph Hooper and Liam McFarlane, the competition has been running this week extremely successfully. The finals take place this Thursday and the winning Tutor Group will receive a pizza party to commemorate the experience.  When Tutor Groups were not competing, another group of students contributed to a collection of wellness activities for classes to choose from to help balance the demands on this big week.  These are further extraordinary examples of student voice and student-led initiatives that came together with a proactive and enthusiastic group of students wanting to help build further cohesion and spirit across the cohort.  Thank you to all students who contributed to the events this week and for all students across the cohort for their enthusiasm in participation.

NAPLAN

Well done to all Yr 7 students who completed NAPLAN during the week. We were really impressed with how they approached each day.

Student Lockers

There has been a lot of talk around student lockers lately and you would have received a letter from Ms Gemma Van de Peer earlier in the week. Our goal is to support Yr 7 to better self-manage their lockers in the Redlands Learning Hub, and in the process, develop some important social and emotional learning (SEL) skills. I would just like to say that our Yr 7 cohort has shown that they can be responsible young people – so, I do hope they can take these messages on board moving forward.

NAPLAN – Yrs 3 and 5

This week saw students across Australia in Yrs 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy, or NAPLAN, as it is more commonly known. Our students can take great pride in the way in which they approached these formal assessments and our starting point in Yrs 3 and 5 is always to ensure that the students do not feel any undue pressure, that they are appropriately prepared for the format of the tests, and that they were provided the conditions to do their very best, all that we can ever ask of them.

My thanks are extended to Ms Atkins (Junior Campus Dean of Administration) for her considerable work behind the scenes to ensure that everything ran smoothly and to Class and Learning Plus teachers for looking after the academic and pastoral needs of their students, both before and during these tests. We look forward to receiving the results in Term 3, at which point parents will also receive a detailed breakdown of their child’s assessments.

Biggest Morning Tea – Thursday 27 May

We are excited to be part of this year’s Cancer Council event, Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea.

Led by an initiative from Class 4 Red which they presented in assembly, we look forward to hosting this event on campus where students will be able to purchase morning tea baked goods and be able to donate money too.

Parents and community members may also wish to support this student-led fundraiser by making a donation at our online fundraising page here.

Walk to School Day: Friday 14 May

Tomorrow is National Walk Safely to School Day, an annual campaign which promotes road safety and a healthy lifestyle. Walking to school is one way to build exercise into our daily routine and also will help reduce traffic congestion around our Redlands school community.

We have been promoting this with students this week and this short BTN video may be a conversation starter at home too that you can use to discuss with your students prior to Friday morning.

We will have stickers at the gate for students who walk to school and even if parents need to drive, perhaps park a couple of streets away and walk the last part tomorrow.

Belinda Oxley Scholarship – Arts Cards

We are delighted to announce that the Arts cards can be pre-purchased here and will be distributed after Wednesday 26 May.

The online auction is also now open with wonderful prizes such as holiday accommodation, children activities and camps and incredible artwork. This auction will close at 2.30pm on Wednesday 26 May.

Proceeds made from these initiatives will be dedicated towards the Belinda Oxley Scholarship, a means-tested scholarship which is to be awarded to an exceptionally talented Yr 7 2023 student for their entire Secondary schooling.

House Cross Country Carnival

Congratulations to all of our students who took part in today’s annual House Cross Country Carnival. In beautiful weather, it was inspiring to see students challenge themselves and earn House points in their races and there were some wonderful personal bests for many students but of equal note, I was delighted to see the students having fun and showing great sportsmanship.

My thanks are extended to our Sports Department and our team of teachers and coaches who helped to ensure that the day was a success.

PREP SCHOOL UPCOMING EVENTS

Walk Safely to School Day – Friday 14 May

Walking is the first thing an infant wants to do and the last thing an old person wants to give up. Walking is the exercise that does not need a gym. It is the prescription without medicine, the weight control without diet, and the cosmetic that can’t be found in a chemist. It is the tranquilliser without a pill, the therapy without a Psychoanalyst, and the holiday that does not cost a penny. What’s more, it does not pollute, consumes few natural resources and is highly efficient. Walking is convenient, it needs no special equipment, is self-regulating and inherently safe. Walking is as natural as breathing – written by John Butcher – Founder Walk21

Now in its 22nd year, this important day is supported by Redlands and we are so excited to see students walking to school tomorrow (if they can) and enjoying chatting along the way! I believe that some of our students and families are using a ‘walking train’ through their streets. If this is happening in your area, please take some photos to share with us.

For more information on this exciting event, how you can participate, walking road safety recommendations or hosting your child a healthy breakfast for their big walk, please read on here.

Belinda Oxley Scholarship Luncheon

There is only two weeks ago until this event!

Last week we were excited to announce the winners of the Design A Card competition in our Prep Assembly. Dana Casimaty presented our Prep winners with a paint set that they can use for future art pieces. We are now delighted to announce that the cards can be pre-purchased here and will be distributed after Wednesday 26 May.

The online auction with wonderful prizes such as holiday accommodation, children activities and camps and incredible artwork is open now and will close on Wednesday 26 May at 2.30pm. Proceeds from these initiatives will be dedicated towards the Belinda Oxley Scholarship, the means-tested scholarship which is to be awarded to an exceptionally talented Yr 7 2023 student for the entire Secondary Schooling.

OOSH News

Our OOSH team has been working incredibly hard to revamp our OOSH room as well as encourage student agency as often as they can. At this stage OOSH is completely booked out on Wednesday and Thursdays and there also exists quite a substantial wait list for these days. Please be aware of this if you are calling or emailing on these days, as your child will be placed on the waitlist.

Yr One have been observing changes in foods when they are heated and cooled. One Blue had a wonderful opportunity to use our senses of sight, smell and touch to observe popcorn before and after popping. It smelt so good, we wished we could have eaten it, but we know that we don’t taste Science experiments.

Redlands House and Transition Gold

Transition Gold 2022 Information Session

It is the time of year when we start to think about school readiness. For assistance in deciding the best pathway for your child, please speak to your class teacher. Children can be very different on a group situation and your teacher will be able to guide you in relation to their learning style and ability to socially and emotionally cope with school. On Wednesday 19 May at 3pm, an Information Session will be conducted for families interested in the Transition Class for their child in 2022. Ideally children are best suited to the Transition Class, if they turn five years old between January and August. The Transition Class Information session will be held in the Transition Gold classroom at 3pm.

Independent Thinkers

At Redlands, one of our major objectives is to encourage children to be critical independent thinkers. Children are naturally curious, there is no need to teach them to think per se, and therefore the educators role is to introduce them to different more effective ‘ways of thinking’. Our Educators support the children to focus on critical thinking, and problem solving, communication, collaboration and creativity and innovation. We develop these skills by assisting the children to make connections between new ideas and their own experiences, building on their prior knowledge, identify children’s current understandings and address any misconceptions. We engage the children in real-life problem solving, encouraging them to describe and verbalise their thoughts to co-construct meaning, challenge ideas and viewpoints. Families can assists in developing these thinking dispositions by: helping children make connections between new ideas and own experiences; engaging children in solving problems and talking about what you are thinking; asking children to describe their thinking and expose them to a variety of viewpoints.

Secondary Sport

Secondary Sport Redlands Pulse

AFL

On a wet and windy Thursday 6 May, 130 boys turned up to Gore Hill Oval along with similar numbers of girls at Bankstown to trial for the NSWCIS 15 years and under AFL teams. Redlands had five boys and one girl trial: Isaac Brooks (Yr 9), Henry Charles (Yr 9), Flynn Kieran (Yr 9), Oliver Noakes (Yr 10), Charlie Parker (Yr 9) and Eva Osborn (Yr 9). The standard of play was high despite the conditions, and all Redlands students played well in front of the selectors across a number of trial matches. Congratulations to Isaac, Henry and Eva for making the final play-off round of 36 and congratulations to Henry and Eva for selection in the final CIS team of 22. Best of luck to both students in the NSW AFL All Schools Championship to be played on Tuesday 25 May!

Congratulations also goes out to to Eva Osborn (Yr 9) on making the Girls NSWCIS 15 Years and under AFL team who will compete in the NSW AFL All Schools Championship on Monday 24 May.

Basketball

Congratulations to Emilie Bessell and Meera Coburn who represented the ISA at the NSWCIS Basketball Tournament last Thursday 6 May. The ISA team were undefeated on the day, winning all five games they played. Both Emilie and Meera were an integral part of the team’s success and have been included into the 16 players who were selected into the CIS squad, with the final team to be named after a training session next week.

Yola Reinecke was in Mackay last week at the U20 Australian National Championships representing NSW. Her team finished 4th in the tournament, losing the bronze medal game to a very strong Queensland team. A fantastic achievement, congratulations Yola.

Fitness Centre

With the large numbers of students consistently attending our morning sessions in the Fitness Centre, there will be an adjustment to the programming across Monday to Friday.

From next week the Monday morning session will be a Girls Only Session. This is a way to encourage all of our female athletes to attend a session specifically designed for their selected Winter Rep. Sports. The session will run off the normal time with the students arriving at the session at 6:30am.

This is a great initiative and I encourage all of our female athletes to get behind the session and attend in huge numbers.

Sessions for the rest of the week, Tuesday – Friday will continue as mixed age groups and students.

Football

Many games in Round 2 of the ISA Season were washed out due to the rain. However, there were a few teams that were still able to play including the 2nd Boys who had a great game, even though they went down 3-0 to St Patrick’s 3rd Boys. The 16A Boys played against St Patrick’s 16B and despite holding a 1-0 lead until the final minutes, St Patrick’s managed to score two quick goals at the end of the game, finishing with a 2-1 loss to the Redlands 16A team. The 13B Boys played against Oakhill 13D and had a great game, dominating possession for the match and finishing with a 7-0 win. The Inter A Girls also had the opportunity to play on Saturday against the Barker Inter B team, having a great team win and finishing with an 11-0 victory.

A reminder the details for the games in Round 3 are now available on Redlands Pulse under the “Redlands Rhino (FIXTURES)”. Please check the details of your game carefully in the event there are any changes. The 1st Girls will be travelling via bus to CCGS this Saturday and parents will need to complete the bus permissions online for students who will be catching the bus.

Hockey

Round two of the ISA Hockey Season saw two games cancelled due to the rain. The 2nd Girls game still went ahead at Barker College where they had a fantastic game, finishing with an 8-1 win over the Barker 2nd Girls. In Round 3 all teams will be travelling via bus to venues outside of Sydney. A reminder that all parents will need to complete the online permissions on engage for the bus this Saturday.

Congratulations to Sebastien Griffith on his selection into the NSWCIS Open Boys Hockey team. Seb will compete at the NSWCIS Hockey Championships in Week 5, good luck Seb.

Netball

It was a very busy day at NBISC on Saturday with some late restrictions meaning no spectators. This didn’t impact the spirits of the teams, with some great matches across the morning. The 1st VII continued their winning ways with a strong display against St Pauls Grammar School, our 2nds had a very close match against St Andrews with the game going back and forth in the final quarter, luck falling Redlands way with a 3 point win in the end.

A reminder to all that the Redlands Rhino has the up to date fixtures for this weekend, there have also been some changes to the draw with Redlands Pulse – Netball having a draft draw.

Tennis

On Saturday 13 May, our ISA teams played either St Pius X or St Augustine’s. All teams played extremely well both in their doubles and their singles. It is great to see the teams working really well together with lots of talking on the court in the doubles, an important attribute to poses when playing doubles, particularly when many of our doubles pairings are new.

Spectators are asked to sign in to each venue with the venues Service NSW QR code or to follow any instructions as directed by the school convenor present. EastCourts Tennis Club have a no spectators inside the venue policy this week. However, spectators are allowed to watch from the carpark/outside the venue. Please note, only some courts will have good viewing access from this vantage point.

Just a reminder, please email Eliza Peirce directly regarding injury/illness that eliminates you from a training session. Unexplained absences will result in a lunch time detention. If you are rostered to play on Saturday and fall ill on Friday, please notify Eliza Peirce no later than 12.00pm on Friday to ensure a substitute can be found.

Wet weather notifications can be found on twitter @RedlandsSport, if you cannot find wet weather information, please turn up to your venue regardless, this applies to training and matches.

Waterpolo

Our Senior Waterpolo teams are heading into the back end of their season, with only four weeks to go. The teams have been improving each week and they are just in reach of the Finals. Our Inter teams are also playing some good waterpolo, with some close matches in the last few weeks.

The final weeks of the Senior draw are now available on Redlands Pulse – Water Polo

Cross Country Carnival

Our annual Junior School Cross Country Carnival took place at Cammeray Golf Club during the week in beautiful conditions. In the final of our big 3 carnivals there was much excitement leading up to the first event especially on the new course from 2020 with more hills and turns. With two events on the same course running the same distance, (Championship and Fun as determined by the Beep test results in class) it was great to see all students put in a big effort no matter what event they were running.

We were also able to have parents, carers and spectators at this event this year and thank you to those in attendance who did a great job in following the crowd control guidelines to make the event as safe as possible for the students.

Over the day and across both events course marshals scattering at checkpoints throughout the course were witness to some acts of sportsmanship, one student actually finished her race carrying two spare shoes that she picked up while running, others ran with a friend who needed more time on one of the 5 hills, others made a pact to run as a group and a few stopped and helped out friends who had tripped over. I am sure there were a lot more that went unnoticed. We also had some very competitive runs especially in our Yr 5 and 6 classes.

Special mention to Finn Gurney in Year 6 who for the second year running recorded the fastest race of the day completing the course in a time of 9:59.77. Fastest female was Olivia Law only a minute behind Finn with a time of 10:59.33.

Secondary Campus Ensemble Rehearsal Attendance

Students are reminded about the importance of regular attendance to all Music Ensemble rehearsals and in meeting goals set at the start of the year in reaching a high standard of performance excellence. Morning rehearsals commence 7.15am and students should be moving to rehearsal rooms by 7.10am. Absence due to camp and/or illness will be the only accepted reason for non-attendance. It is essential that you contact seniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au if you are unable to attend any rehearsals.

A reminder that punctual attendance at all ensembles is an expectation of all students enrolled in co-curricular ensembles. Prep Ensembles commence at 7.45am, with supervision from 7.35am and Junior School Ensembles commence at 7.15am with supervision from 7.05am. The exception to these times are Junior Voices, Guitar Ensemble and Jazz Band which all commence promptly at 7.30am.
