Issue 14 2020 - 14 May 2020

Foundation

We are very excited to see students back on campus this week and are looking forward to the opening of the New Learning Hub later this term.

“I am excited for the opening of the New Learning Hub because we will have so much more learning space! A better environment helps me concentrate and learn better so I think it will really help boost my school experience. I am also excited for the new grass area so there more nice places to sit during breaks.”

“I’m eagerly awaiting the opening of the New Learning Hub, with it comes new opportunities to learn in an environment that is conducive to a contemporary education.”

From the Principal

There has been a definite buzz around the campuses as we have welcomed students back this week. We have had strong attendance rates across the School on the specific days that each Year Group has returned to On-Campus Learning, and it has been a pleasure to see the smiling faces, particularly from parents at drop-off!

As previously advised, we distributed our plan for attendance up until the end of Week 4, realising that the landscape could well change by Week 5 and beyond. As has recently been mentioned through the media, the preliminary indication is that the NSW Government will most likely move to have all students attending school each day from the beginning of Week 5, Monday 25 May.  Our current plan is that we would support this move and will be working towards being able to welcome all students back every day from that date. We would also look to reinstate our OOSH program at this time, and are in the process of reviewing the program of cocurricular activities and the staged reintroduction of sport, in line with the AIS framework, endorsed by the AHPPC.

We will write to all parents and carers early next week with details of our plans and the steps we will be continuing to take to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our community. If you have any feedback or queries regarding the transition to having more students on campus each day, this can be provided through feedback@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Thank you to all members of the school community for your fantastic support of our two recent fundraising initiatives in support of Taldumande Youth Services and breast cancer research through the Virtual Mother’s Day Classic 2020 last weekend. It is wonderful to know that thousands of dollars have been raised for these important causes.

I am very much looking forward to celebrating National Careers Week next week, from 18-24 May 2020. Please click image below for more details of the events.

Mother’s Day Classic

Thanks to all the participants in last week’s Mother’s Day Classic virtual race. We had 133 registered participants and raised over $3,000 for breast cancer research.

Redlands Silver Linings Cookbook

The RPFA is excited to be putting together the school community’s best family recipes made during lockdown. We are looking for at least one recipe and photo from every Year Group of any meal – breakfast, lunch or dinner. Using the template as a starting point, please save your copy as “Recipe – [your family name]” and submit to rpfavicepresident@redlands.nsw.edu.au by the end of Term 2. Thanks and happy cooking!

Book Club

The Redlands Book Club held its second meeting via Zoom and its first evening meeting last week to discuss The Single Ladies of the Jacaranda Retirement Village by local Northern Beaches author Joanna Nell. Although it was a light-hearted book, it discussed many important issues around ageing and we would highly recommend it.

Our next meeting will be held in the second last week of term to discuss the non-fiction book Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup by John Carreyrou. This New York Times best seller was named as the Financial Times and McKinsey Business Book of the Year.

Please email Lerida Grant on lerida@bigpond.net.au for more information.

Return to Campus

It has been wonderful to see and hear students returning to the Campus this week. While we realise they are returning to a new normal and are having to make a number of adjustments to their routines, there has certainly been that first day of school buzz of excitement around the playground, corridors and classrooms. I would like to express my appreciation to all of the students for the mature and thoughtful manner in which they have returned to Campus as they have effectively followed the new rules and expectations which we have communicated in our Return to Campus Arrangements for this week. We will continue with these arrangements and our stated schedule for Week 4 and will communicate further arrangements for Week 5 next week. Just a reminder that we have opened the Campus for students from 7.30am and they may arrive between 7.30-8.15am for their temperature checking as they arrive to school.

Cybersafety Seminar

It was pleasing to see the large online parent turnout for the Cybersafety webinar presented by Brett Lee on Tuesday evening. Brett outlined the risks that young people face online and also shared some strategies that parents can put in place to support young people to use technology safely and constructively. In the webinar, Brett outlined the following points we can raise with students to help them remain safe online:

  • The internet is public and permanent
  • Protect personal details online
  • People you only know through the internet should be seen as strangers
  • We all have rules on the internet and computers
  • Talk to a trusted adult if you encounter an online problem or issue

In addition, he shared the following five principles parents can follow at home to help support students to use technology safely and appropriately:

  • Set clear rules and boundaries
  • Remember that you, as a parent, make the final decision
  • Use management controls
  • Stay up to date with your child’s usage
  • Communicate with your children regularly

Students in Yrs 7-10 will have many of these messages reinforced with them through either the Pastoral program or the PDHPE curriculum over the course of this year. We look forward to welcoming Brett back to Redlands later this year to give a similar presentation to the students.

Service Learning

It was great to see so many members of the Secondary School community (staff, students and parents) participate in our two remote service learning opportunities last weekend: Taldumande Camp-In for Kids and the Mother’s Day Classic. Thus far we have raised $3354 for Taldumande to support vulnerable and homeless children and their families from across the Sydney region. We also raised nearly $3000 in the Mother’s Day Classic which will go towards breast cancer research. Pleasingly, we also had the second largest number of participants in the Mother’s Day Classic for schools. Thank you to Ms Riley for her efforts in organising these events and to the many staff, students and parents who participated.

National Careers Week (Term 2 Week 4)

We have looked to build on the success of the inaugural Redlands National Careers Week in 2019 in the 2020 version. Pleasingly, despite the various restrictions currently in place, we have been able to move all of the scheduled events to a remote environment in Week 4. We are excited to offer an array of activities and events aimed at getting students to think about post-school possibilities aligning with our vision of further developing their “life-readiness”. Some of the highlights are:

  • A remote Careers focused assembly on Tuesday
  • Guest speakers on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 4.30 – 5.30pm
  • Tuesday: Janine Garner presents “It’s Who You Know: Why your network is key to your success and how to find the right people that will help YOU”.
  • Wednesday: Matt Church presents “Lead the future. How to thrive in the decade of disruption”.
  • A Speed Networking session for students with over 20 Redlanders from around Australia and the world
  • Another instalment of the Great Debate between teachers and students during lunch on Friday.

More information can be found here. We encourage students to sign up for as many activities as possible.

Study Skills

As mentioned in some of the Year Group sections of Note Day last week, there are a number of useful resources in the Study Skills Handbook which Dr Prue Salter has shared with schools. We encourage students and parents to look at these to assist with both On-Campus and Remote Learning. Some of her tips for successful remote learning are below.

  1. Have clear distinctions between schoolwork time and your personal time. If you let those two worlds collide you will end up never really feeling like you can have time to yourself without feeling guilty. Then in the learning times you can make a more conscious effort to stay on track.
  2. If you know you can’t stay focused in your bedroom, then do your learning in another part of the house where someone can check up on you. Working in an area of the house where you will be supervised can help you stay on track.
  3. Take notes when you are listening to the teacher talk or make a mind map about what is being discussed in the lesson. If you are writing about what you are learning it will help you to be more focused.
  4. Turn off all notifications and make sure your mobile is on silent (or preferably in another room). Don’t have other windows or applications open on your computer. Take away the temptation so you don’t send messages to other students or work on other tasks during a lesson when you are meant to be focused.
  5. Every 20 minutes look away at something 20 feet (about 6 metres) away for 20 seconds to reduce eye strain. Stand up and stretch if you need to.

Debating

Congratulations to our debaters who participated in virtual debates against Knox last Friday. While certainly different, it was great to see so many of our debaters still able to participate in this event. We thank Ms Bryant for her efforts in organising these and we wish the debaters all the best over the next two weeks in further remote debates against Pymble Ladies’ College and Kambala.

Online Canteen Ordering

When students return to campus next week they will have the option of online Canteen ordering through Flexischools, enabling them to preorder their recess and lunch and pick it up from the canteen. Parents can create a Flexischools account for their family via this link https://www.flexischools.com.au/ and link a credit card and student number. More details regarding online Canteen ordering are available on Redlands Pulse.

While online Canteen ordering will minimise student movement through the Canteen, it will still be open for real time purchases. However there will be a limited number of students allowed at the Canteen at any one time.

Uniform

We would ask families to support the school in ensuring students are in the proper Winter uniform as they return to campus. This includes following the School’s expectations in terms of hair, jewellery and blazers. A reminder that all students are expected to wear their blazers to and from school in Terms 2 and 3 on all days except Thursday (when students may wear PE uniform to and from School).

Uniform Shop – Online Ordering Only from Monday 18 May

Effective from this Monday 18 May, all Uniform orders will only be available Online through Flexischools for both parents and students via the following link: www.flexischools.com.au until further notice.

This is due to the significant increase in the number of parents and students visiting the Uniform Shop in recent days.

Please note that only if an incorrect size has been ordered online, exchanges can be made at the Uniform Shop.

Chaplain

The delight of having students in the classroom warms my heart and reminds me why I became a teacher in the first place. Thank you to parents for entrusting your children to Redlands. I just love teaching them as each of their individual personalities and warmth comes out.

I started today with a very excited Yr 7 class. The classroom throbbed with excitement and smiles.

Students reflected in this time on the experience of isolation. While there was anticipation of return of sport and more face to face time with friends, there was also a sense of gratitude and appreciation that this was a unique season for them.

The time of restriction on our movement and socialising has given us a new appreciation and gratitude for many things that are overlooked in the hustle of life. Time to reflect; time to be with family; the joy of laughing with our children; the beauty of a walk; the peace of life less rushed; the pleasure of teaching our children to cook (and clean up); the challenge of finding new ways to connect with others; the wonder of just thinking. There is so much to be grateful for in this phase of life.

There is much to give thanks for as we look at our country and how we have coped with lockdown and the beginning of a staged return. I am humbled and thankful for those I know who work in hospitals as representatives of all those working in that arena. I am thankful for the army of cleaners and their quiet persistent work. I am thankful for the clear blue skies and the grey clouds that leads to life-giving rain. I am thankful for the mercies I see each morning.

There is still a long way to go, with many challenges and transitions still to face. Taking the following verse to heart can help to navigate this terrain ahead: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4:6). This captures the balance between letting go of the concerns we do not have control over and not allowing it to consume us. It reminds us that God has an eager ear and a unique perspective. He hears and answers though we may not see the precise answer we are expecting. It also tells us that as we set our anxiety aside and call to God, we can do it with thankful hearts appreciating the blessings God has bestowed on us now and into the future. As we trust God, he showers us with peace.

So like my Yr 7 class, it is good to reflect, be thankful and look for the joys still to come.

Cyber Awareness

Below are some takeaways for students from Brett Lee’s Understanding and Managing an Online World webinar which was held on Monday evening. Whilst they may be more appropriate for our younger students, a reminder never hurts.

The internet is public and permanent.
I need to protect my personal details online.
People I only know on the Internet are strangers.
We all have rules on the internet and computers.
I can talk to a trusted person if I have an online problem.

Year 10

It was fantastic to see Yr 10 on Tuesday and how excited they were to be back on campus for the day. There was a high level of energy and collegiality throughout the day and it was clear the students had missed each other over the past few weeks. I am sure they are already looking forward to next Tuesday, as are all of us.

Half Yearly Examinations

A reminder that students will be sitting their Half Yearly exams on Friday 15 May and Monday 18 May. The exam timetable has been sent to them and can also be found on the Pastoral page under Important Information. The students have been told that it is a reduced number of exams, being Maths, Languages, Science and Dance only. During these two days, students will not have normal Zoom classes, with the exception of still being required to attend Tutor sessions. Students have been told to ask their class teachers if they have any questions as to the processes involved, and also to communicate effectively with them if they have any technological issues during the exams. If you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Careers Information

Students will shortly begin the process of deciding their choices of HSC or IB subjects for 2021-22. Ms Salier, our Careers Advisor, spoke to half of the students on Tuesday about this process and will be speaking to the other half next Tuesday.

Next week is National Careers Week and Ms Salier has organised a number of activities to take place during the week. She will be sending further information to parents and students as to how to access some of the keynote speakers and the events, which are also included here:

Interesting Article

please read

As we all remain in some form of lockdown, our wonderful Redlands online sport program has enabled our students to continue to work on fitness with lots of interesting and fun activities. I am sure the students are missing the connection with the team sports that they love playing as I know I have been struggling with not being able to play the sports that I love also. This week I have attached a link to the World Athletics website which is an amusing read with some interesting videos and facts, and also has additional lockdown exercises to keep you fit, focused and sane.

Key Dates

Yr 9 On-Campus Learning Friday 15 May and Friday 22 May
Virtual Study Skills Seminar Prior to Monday 1 June

Return to School

Ms Walker and I are incredibly excited about seeing Yr 9 this week. Guidelines have been further developed that provide school staff, students and parents with a clear reference point of how Redlands is ensuring a safe, clean and secure environment. Redlands will continue to implement appropriate social distancing measures proportionate to health advice. Yr 9 had a year meeting to discuss return-to-school arrangements this week.

On return to school days, we will continue to emphasise to Yr 9 the need to implement good hygiene practices, including:

  • wash hands frequently with soap and water before and after eating and after going to the toilet
  • cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze
  • avoid touching your face
  • limit physical contact when greeting people
  • limit physical contact in the playground.
  • staggered break times to avoid classes mixing

Entry to School

The Campus will be open for students from 7.30am in Weeks 3 and 4. The Library will be open from 8.00am-4.00pm. The Library will not be available for students to use before or after school and the Study Centre will not run during this time. The Library will also not be open at recess or lunch for student use.

Uniform

Students are expected to wear their Winter School uniform for On-Campus Learning days. However we appreciate that families may not have had the opportunity to visit the Uniform Shop over the past few weeks. From next Monday 18 May, Winter Uniform purchases will only be able to be made Online through Flexishools via the following link: www.flexischools.com.au until further notice. This is due to the significant increase in the number of parents and students visiting the Uniform Shop in recent days. Please note that If an incorrect size has been ordered online, exchanges can be made.

Resources – Parent and Carers Toolkit

To support parents and carers, the Department of Education has created an ‘essentials’ toolkit packed with self-care tips and handy lists in the areas of parenting books, apps, podcasts, websites and self-care tips. These resources aim to support you and your child’s mental and emotional wellbeing during this period of uncertainty and change.

Study Skills

By now we are all starting to get a bit more used to different modes of learning. If you are still finding it challenging to stay focused in online lessons, here are some tips to help you:

Virtual Study Skills Seminar – Prue Salter

If you were lucky enough to attend the Study Skills evening back when students were in Yr 7, you would appreciate the wealth of valuable insights, tips and hints presenter and study skills expert Dr Prue Satler has to offer. Redlands has arranged parent access to a virtual Study Skills Seminar until 1 June.

Given the increase in student autonomy with their learning management, this is the perfect time to revisit and refine developed skills.

Ideally it is best that you watch these videos together with your child, just like you did when you attended the evening in person. The Study Skills Seminar has been broken down into bite sized chunks so if you do not have time to watch it all in one go, you can work through the session at your own pace. You can also go back and watch any of the videos prior to 1 June. The video page will prompt you to download the workbooks for the session and will show you at the end where you can then access all the slides from the session that are shown in the video. The link to access the evening is here (Username: redlands | Password: 68results).

Year 8

This Week

As a Year Group, our students will be contributing to thanking the essential workers in our community as a Pastoral effort from Yrs 7-12. Yr 8 will be sending letters to our local delivery services, including our nearest Australia Post locations. We have an eager group of students helping to organise this effort and appreciate all of their support and enthusiasm in writing these very important messages.

Thank you to all parents who participated in Brett Lee’s presentation on Cybersafety earlier this week.  While students are spending more time online with remote learning and modern technologies, his message was even more important. He shared valuable information and resources while reinforcing the message that the internet world works very much like our physical world and our teaching and discussions with students about rules and structures online should highlight these parallels. A few notes and resources are below.

Brett Lee’s Cybersafety Presentation

This webinar was designed to empower parents with the knowledge and strategies to support their sons and daughters to be as safe as possible when online. He encouraged parents to set clear rules and boundaries, to always make the final decisions, to use management controls, to stay up-to-date with their children and their technology usage (what are they using and when) and to communicate with their children regularly about what they are doing online.  This all begins by starting the conversation, including:
What?  All programs, apps and websites
When?  Time limits and occasions for using these devices
Who?  Restrictions on who they can/cannot connect with
Where?  Where it can/cannot be used
How? Language that is acceptable online and what to do when there are problems

Further information for parents on Gaming, the Dark Web and 5 Principles to Stay Safe Online can be found on Brett Lee’s website, www.internetsafeeducation.com .

Careers Week

Next week is Career’s Week at Redlands and all students are invited to participate in two guest speaker presentations through the Zoom links in the attached flyer. Yr 8 will also participate in a special Careers Matching Game next Friday and they are all invited to participate in the Great Debate taking place at lunchtime. Registration for this event is open to all students through the Library iLearn page.

Study Skills Tip For May

While some students and families have embraced remote home learning, others are still struggling with certain aspects. Dr Prue Salter has released a video series answering the most commonly asked FAQs to help Yrs 7-12 families make the learning taking place at home as effective as possible this term. You can access this series here: https://pruesalter.com/RHL/RHL.php

The one hour session is broken into 17 bite sized chunks of mini-videos.

Topics covered are:

  • How can families make the home environment a better space for learning?
  • How much schoolwork should students be doing each day?
  • What is the best way to approach the day’s learning?
  • How involved should parents be and what if they also have to work at home?
  • How important is it to stick to the curriculum?
  • Any specific advice for senior students?
  • What if students have trouble learning this way?
  • What should senior students do if they feel they are disadvantaged?
  • How can students stay motivated to do their schoolwork at home?
  • How can students stay more focused in online lessons?
  • What do you need to know about webinars?
  • How much screen time can students have outside of schooltime?
  • What can students do outside of their schoolwork to be more effective learners?
  • What are the top tips for parents?
  • What are the top tips for students?
  • Where can you get help from?

Year 7

Welcome back to campus Yr 7!  What an exciting morning to see our delightful Yr 7 students come back onto campus. The excitement all around the cohort was fantastic and their enthusiasm to get back into class was wonderful to note.

Updated Student Arrival Time Weeks 3 and 4

Please note that we have amended the time which the campus will be open for students in Weeks 3 and 4. Students may arrive now from 7.30am in Weeks 3 and 4. This earlier time will facilitate an earlier arrival for Yr 12 students who have before school classes, as well as those students who might arrive to school before 8.00am because of school buses or other transportation arrangements. In addition, this earlier time will also help to alleviate possible congestion between 8.00-8.15am as students are arriving to school and having their temperature checks. Temperature checking will now be open from 7.30am for students arriving on campus. Please note that the Library and outdoor courts will not be available for student use before school.

Yr 7 Vaccinations Update

Yr 7 vaccinations will be: Dose 1 – 11 June and Dose 2 will be postponed to Term 1 2021, date TBA.

Parent Webinar – Brett Lee Understanding and Managing an Online World

Thank you to all the parents who attended the webinar on Tuesday 12 May. Brett Lee shared some excellent messages surrounding the areas of technology and the reality of how it can impact on the lives of our young people, digital footprint, cyberbullying and sexting.

Brett highlighted five simple key principles around the management of the online space for parents to consider:

  1. Set clear rules and boundaries
  2. You make the final decisions
  3. Use management controls
  4. Stay up to date with your child’s usage
  5. Communicate with your children

Key points to discuss with your children:

  • The internet is a public and permanent space
  • To always protect their personal details online
  • Everyone has rules on the internet and on computers
  • Talk to a trusted adult if they have any online problems

“Happy was an understatement! The boys’ first words when I picked them up were ‘we don’t want to get in the car and for this day to end!!’ I think that says it all really…:-))”

This message from a Junior School parent this week made me smile and may resonate with many other families too. It has been a joy for us to welcome the majority of students back in this phased return over the week and aspects of the return have felt like the start of a new school year. Similar to the start of the -year, I have also noticed how much students have grown over the time away! This will continue next week as communicated with next Thursday and Friday seeing two Junior School Year Groups attend together as another incremental step towards the return of all students.

We have really appreciated the parent support of new drop-off and collection processes which has made for a smooth start and end of school day for everyone. The key reminder from me is that Junior School arrival is not before 8.15am and goes until 8.35am. Roll call is deliberately later and this window of time has been clearly planned to allow for Prep families to have dropped off before and allay congestion on Allister Street.

The School’s planning for on-campus learning Week 5 onwards will be communicated at the start of next week.

Thank You

On behalf of our staff, I express my gratitude for the scrumptious pastries delivered to the School on Tuesday for all staff to enjoy from the Redlands Parents and Friends Association on behalf of all parents. Our community has always been one that shows and values gratitude and support, and for parents to think of us as we return to On-Campus Learning spoke volumes and was immensely appreciated.

I Spanish News – Education Perfect Languages Championships

Redlands students are once again encouraged to join students from all around the world to learn languages, earning points towards awards (and maybe even prizes!) for yourself, while helping Redlands to shine on an international platform.

The EP Languages Championships are on again from 4.00pm on Thursday 14 May until 4.00pm on Thursday 21 May.

All Junior School students are registered to participate. To compete, all students need to do is answer Spanish language questions on Education Perfect. Points are awarded for all questions except self-marked questions and dash. Further details of the competition can be found on the website or on the EP app.

Certificates will be awarded to students with 500+ points. Redlands Junior School Spanish students will also have the chance to win gift vouchers and other prizes in our own school-based challenge.

I encourage all students to participate to improve their Spanish skills and have fun in this exciting and motivating competition. ¡Buena Suerte!

Chess

During Term 2, the Sydney Academy of Chess will still be offering Chess coaching services online for Redlands students with three components. How it works:

  • Online live lessons – the students who have enrolled for Term 2 will meet the Chess coach in a virtual classroom using the Whereby meeting tool, where the coach will share the chess board on the screen and guide the group through a new topic each week, such as checkmate patterns, opening traps, strategies and endgame techniques.
  • Pre-recorded video lessons – weekly lessons will also be pre-recorded and available to view on the Vimeo website in a private folder. These lessons can be viewed using an iPad, iPhone, laptop or desktop at the students’ leisure.
  • Online playing server – after the students have watched their lesson, they will be encouraged to practise their skills here which is our online playing platform for games, puzzles and challenges. Each child’s Chess Squad login and password will be emailed to the parents, when they enrol for the classes.

There is a cost for this service of $77 for the term which can be made via this secure payment page. Please enter the code HXOGYD0P1E and then follow the prompts to complete the enrolment.

Sustainability

A key overarching strategic goal of the School is to continually improve our environmental sustainability and over the last break solar panels were installed across the roof of both the Peter Cornish Building and Robert Dunnet Hall. These were commissioned this week and we will seek to incorporate the various data that the solar panels will provide us into student learning, which will be an excellent real-world resource for us.

We are also pleased to have installed 15 new recycling bins around the Junior Campus from the beginning of this term. These bins will be for paper or co-mingled recycling and we encourage all members of our community to use them appropriately when onsite. We believe these new recycling bins will further help to reduce our environmental footprint as a School.

Back on Campus

Laughter, smiles, friendship and reconnecting defined this week in the Prep School. The staggered return for our learners was a huge success, with most days having over 80% of students on campus from each Year Group on their scheduled days. Using Seesaw and Zoom as our main learning platforms proved successful, whilst having some outside lessons where students were able to run, play and investigate was the icing on the cake. Lunch times were filled with laughter and games that had been missed by all. Teachers were thrilled to see their students again and some even commented that a few of our learners had grown just a little taller! I had set myself a challenge to get to know the names of our learners each day. Time will tell if I am successful in this venture but I look forward to the challenge again next week.

Thank You

Thank you to all parents who have been so patient throughout the drop off and pick up times this week. We review our processes each day and we appreciate your feedback and understanding while we try to make the current logistics work even better for our community.

On behalf of the Prep staff we would like to thank the Class Parents Group who provided the staff with delicious treats this week. We were all so humbled with your generosity. They certainly didn’t last long in the Staffroom.

Week 4 On-Campus Learning

Please find the staggered schedule below for Week 4. The same procedures will be in place for drop offs and pickups and also for our students whose parents are essential workers.

Temperatures will still be taken each morning. Please be aware that if your child’s temperature is 37.5 degrees or above, you will be asked to take them home and have them checked by a GP before returning. With this said, please consider the temperature in your car as you drive to school on these mornings.

Can I please remind all parents that from 8.00am the School Zone 40km/h applies. We would prefer you to be a few minutes late than cause an accident by rushing through the School Zone.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Later this term, you will have the opportunity to meet with your class teacher for a brief discussion on your child’s progress. In these strange and uncertain times, we feel it is important to have a time to meet face to face with staff, instead of an individual Storypark post. This time will allow us to celebrate their success and raise any concerns. Bookings will be made with your child’s teacher via the School Interviews website. Details will be advised later in the term.

Crunch and Sip, Morning Tea and Lunch

Just a reminder that each child has three breaks for food in the Preschool each day – Crunch and Sip, Morning Tea and Lunch. Can we please ask that these containers are clearly labelled with the child’s name and are placed in the appropriate location at the beginning of the day.

Crunch and Sip: Crunch and Sip is a break during class time when the children can refuel on a fruit or vegetable snack only and rehydrate with water. The Crunch and Sip break gives children the opportunity to eat the piece of fruit that might otherwise be left in their lunchbox. Children are also more likely to eat their fruit or vegetables and drink their water if their friends and peers are all doing it too! We ask that you provide this snack in a separately labeled container or zip-lock bag and place it in the basket on the sink in the classroom storeroom. Drink bottles will also be kept in here and the children will be able to refill their bottles at the sink as they need.

Morning Tea and Lunch are stored in separate containers in the fridge. Each class has a fridge door to open. Morning Tea containers are kept in the class basket in the fridge and lunch boxes and stored on the shelf.

Please remember that we are an Allergy Friendly Centre (ie. allergy aware) and have a number of children with serious allergies. Therefore, we ask that any food your child brings to Preschool does not contain nuts or traces of nuts or shellfish. We have a number of resources containing nutritious and well-balanced lunch box ideas available in our parent library in the foyer for inspiration.

Secondary Sport

Parents and students can refer to Redlands Pulse or iLearn for the most up to date schedule of online fitness/sport sessions and the relevant Zoom links to sign in.

Fitness Centre

We have a number of pieces equipment which are great for the athletic development of students (and adults), including skipping ropes, resistance bands and stretch bands. These are great for warm up and short at home workouts. If you would like to borrow some, please contact Mr Gooding. We have a number that can be borrowed or alternatively we can arrange for them to be purchased.

Football

A reminder to all Redlands Football, that the Zoom sessions and Challenge are compulsory. These will be used towards the end of the season when assessing pockets and award winners. Students who are onsite during the live session will need to either complete the workout during the afternoon (with the video sent to Ms Seebohm and Mr Ellis) or complete the General Fitness session on Thursday Morning (7.00-8.00am) or Thursday afternoon (2.30-3.30pm). The Challenge is uploaded onto iLearn for students to access on Monday afternoons.

Hockey

There are a lot of great Hockey resources on the Redlands iLearn – Hockey, with all winter representative sport. The live Zoom sessions are compulsory for all. Hockey players are reminded to be ready to start at 3.30pm on Tuesday afternoon. Those students who are on site on Tuesday (Yrs 12 and 10) will have space available to complete this workout on school grounds.

Netball

A reminder that there is a live Netball Fitness session run across Zoom every Tuesday morning from 7.00-8.00am for all Secondary School netballers. This session is recorded and placed on the Netball section of the Secondary Sport iLearn page so that students in Yrs 12 and 10 can complete it after they return home from school each Tuesday.

Each Monday, a Netball skill challenge is also provided for all students in the program to complete each week. This challenge has been placed on the Netball page under Weekly Netball Challenges within the Secondary Sport iLearn page. This challenge needs to be completed and uploaded to the assignment section of the Secondary Sport iLearn page by Monday 18 May at 8.00am.

This term, it is an expectation that all netballers complete the Netball Fitness session and the Weekly Netball Challenge as part of their commitment to the sport. Attendance and submission for each student is recorded each week. If a student is unable to make the Netball Fitness session, they must participate in the General Fitness session for their respective Year Group on a Thursday.

We want our netballers to be as conditioned and prepared as possible to take the netball court when the season is able to recommence and I look forward to seeing them in our next live fitness session and to seeing their submissions of this weeks the Netball challenge.

Rugby

For Weeks 3 and 4 Redlands Rugby will continue with Online Learning and resources covering Skill Development, Fitness and also Weekly Challenges. There will be additional videos added each week covering a range of skills and topics including important team building exercises and game plan specific training. Each week new challenges will be released along with the weekly Friday Fitness session tailored towards Rugby.

Make sure students are completing the current Challenges.

We have had some incredible scores in the Bronco Challenge already with 2:19 being the best score from any student. Please make sure the entire challenge is filmed along with the time shown at the end.

Students are reminded that both the challenges and the Friday Fitness session are compulsory for all Rugby students as part of their Winter Rep Sport commitment.

For the Friday Fitness there will be a focus on Core Strength and Leg Drive.

Swimming

With the cancellation of the CIS Swimming Championships, ISA was unable to send a team through to swim at these championships. They did however select a merit team from the results of the ISA Swimming Championships, congratulations to the following swimmers who were selected in this merit team:

  • Olivia Donoghue (Yr 11)
  • Xander Halfen (Yr 8)
  • Chloe Jennings (Yr 8)
  • Erik Scott (Yr 10)
  • Samuel Virtue (Yr 10)
  • Ruby Voyce (Yr 8)

Tennis

Well done to all Tennis students who completed the Tennis challenge last week. Congratulations John Kremer for hitting 356 forehand wall volleys continuously. The following students are also to be congratulated for their efforts: Shaun Patrick (123), Isaac Swann (74), Chanel Wang and Samantha Wightwick (67), and Federico Gazzilli (60). Just a reminder, weekly participation in organised Tennis training, Tennis challenges and general fitness sessions provided by the School is compulsory. The training sessions will help us keep active and allow us to keep improving our individual skills. Students should be practicing this week’s challenge and uploading into iLearn by Sunday along with completing one of the fitness activities listed on the Tennis ilearn page. Students’ attendance will be tracked each week and will count towards final awards and pocket criteria at the end of the season. We are looking forward to the time we can as a school get back out on court.

Touch Football

Congratulations to Anna McCormack (Yr 12) and Olivia (Lulu) Simpson (Yr 12) who were both selected in the ISA Open Touch Football (Merit) team. Due to the cancellation of the CIS Championships, ISA decided to select a merit team (meaning if they were to have trials this would have been the team). This is a fantastic achievement for both Anna and Lulu. This also shows the growth and development of the Redlands Touch Football program.

Return to On-Campus Learning

It has been exciting to welcome back students as they return to On-Campus Learning and their happy faces walking in the school gate when they saw friends and teachers. I have had some questions from families about the resumption of Wednesday and Saturday sport. For now, the online Zoom sessions (see below for details) will continue in line with both the Government guidelines and the published AIS framework. We are currently exploring what a gradual reintroduction of small group training would look like for our students when restrictions are lifted and, once finalised and approved, this will be communicated to all families at the appropriate time.

Saturday Morning Fitness, Netball and Football Zoom Sessions

Last Saturday, we expanded our live Zoom sessions on offer by including a 45 minute Netball skills and a fitness session. This session, adapted from the NSW Swifts online program, was open to any student who wished to participate, regardless if that is their preferred sport. Thanks to our Sports Captain Stella Cunningham who guest presented on her 12th birthday.

Well done to those students who not only completed this session but did so after just finishing the Fitness session prior to, and in some cases even completed the Football session afterwards. We also had a special guest appearance in the Football session by Winston the family dog who ended up in a tug of war practice with Mackenzie.

These sessions will be on offer once again this weekend with the Zoom codes listed below and, like previous weeks, these details will be available on Google Classroom.

Saturday 16 May Zoom Fitness – 9.00-9.45am
Saturday 16 May Zoom Netball – 9.45-10.30am
Saturday 16 May Zoom Football – 10.30-11.15am

Messages of Support Video

This link was emailed to all Junior School families last week but a few emails bounced back. As I said in my email, it is a challenging time for all and so I thought  a video that has some special messages of support for our Junior School students would be fun to watch.

We are looking forward to when the Junior School is be back to how it was at the start of Term 1, a hive of activity, students going about their daily routines, sport as we know it, but in the meantime stay focused, stay positive and enjoy the video.

FOSS

Thanks to everyone who joined our Friends of Snowsports Zoom meeting on Monday night.

Main points from the meeting:

  • we are preparing to enter teams (approximately two per division) in the State Championships 23-30 August at Thredbo;
  • possibility of an on-line buy/sell sale soon;
  • ski weekends in Term 3 for State training;
  • still a possibility of Family Weeks and training in holidays. All still up in the air!

Next FOSS meeting is on 25 May at 6.00pm.

Latest Update

From the latest communication from Interschools everything is still on hold. Resort operators are working with Government Health directives and are keen to move ahead with this season. As Australia seems to be doing a great job in controlling the spread of the virus, we can only hope more restrictions are lifted.

If you could envisage at this time your child competing in State Championships then it’s very important from our planning (if you haven’t already) that they are registered here asap. It would also help if everyone could let me know if you have a Thredbo Season pass for 2020 or will need one.

Decisions around all July holiday programs at HCC will be advised in the next couple of weeks. We need more information as the main consideration is Government Policies and the opening of the resorts. If anyone requires a refund for financial reasons, please contact me and I’ll organise the transfer. Any payments made can be carried over to weekends or State.

Snowsports on iLearn

Please look at the Snowsports link on the Secondary Sports iLearn page for fun videos and the Snow Active Dryland Training exercise program. So keep fit and stay healthy.

Ballet and Dance

The Ballet and Dance students continued to show their commitment this week and classes have been progressing professionally with a lot of fun thrown in. Everybody’s patience has shown during some unavoidable technical glitches and the camaraderie and support shared between students is just terrific to see.

Guest Artists

We are very excited to shortly be making an announcement about a new Jazz Guest tutor joining us! As soon as we are back in the studio this highly acclaimed performer will run workshops here at the Academy. Watch this space, as we continue to reveal more.

Reporting

The school is currently experiencing a technical problem which won’t allow our students to be marked present in some of our Ballet and Dance classes. The technical team is working hard to rectify this.

RAD Examinations

The Academy is currently accessing the possibility and feasibility of entering students into the Royal Academy of Dance examinations in 2020. We will keep students and parents informed as we receive updated information and as the RAD continues to develop new examination guidelines and conditions, based on the impact of Covid-19.

Ballet and Dance Classes Online and Guidelines

We continue to run all our Ballet and Dance classes online via Zoom until further notice. Parents and students will be notified in advance of any changes to this arrangement. Students who attend school on a day when they also attend an after school Ballet and Dance class must return home to attend online classes. If required, these students will be permitted to enter the online class late. Unfortunately, there will not be any face to face studio classes at this time. Students and parents can also choose to opt out of any online classes and to request a rebate, please email the Ballet and Dance office. We all very much look forward to returning to the studio at some point in the future.

Supervision of Prep Students

Parents are responsible for the supervision of Prep students during online classes. It is always advised that there is a responsible adult present (in the vicinity of the computer) when a student is working online.

Suitability of Space

Please make sure that the Dance class is taking place in a suitable space. We do recommend 3m x 3m (or at least 2m x 2m) of clean floor space to allow for the students to actively take part in the class. Please also remove any items that could cause injury, including books, toys, pets etc.

Uniform

All students should wear their Dance uniform for class.

Opting Out of Online Ballet and Dance Classes

As advertised, our 2020 classes will all run online, via Zoom with very few exceptions, (performance groups) until further notice. Students who do not want to continue their Ballet and Dance classes online, must let the office know to allow for rebates to be put in place.

Marking the Roll

Class rolls will be marked as per normal practice. Please make all students aware. Students should join the class on time and remain in class throughout the online class.

Abe’s stage credits include A Riff on Keef (2015) for Griffin Theatre Independent, Trigorin in The Seagull (2017 – Dir. Anthony Skuse, Secret House), the 30th anniversary production of the Australian musical Darlinghurst Nights at Hayes Theatre (2018), the world premiere of the new Australian musical Findr (2018 – Jackrabbit Theatre/Darlinghurst Theatre Co), Ironbound  at Kings Cross Theatre (2018) and most recently in Sport for Jove’s Rose Riot –  a two show Shakespearean epic covering 100 years of history and 8 of Shakespeare’s history plays. He played multiple characters including Bagot, Lancaster and Richard of Gloucester. Sign up is via iLearn this week.

ATYP On Demand

ATYP stages work specifically developed to excite young people, not just as audiences but as artists with plays that speak to the experiences, challenges, and achievements of growing up and growing older. The ATYP On Demand platform gives young people and educators around Australia the opportunity to be inspired by the extraordinary talent of young artists. These are plays performed by people their age, including two Redlands students Apsara Lindeman and Olivia Everingham as well as several Redlanders including Rebecca Burchett and Asha Boswarva.

Meeting with Australian Composer and Redlander – Jack Frerer

This week our Foundation office, in conjunction with the Careers office, will be hosting a Virtual Speed Mentoring event via Zoom with emerging Young Australian Composer Jack Frerer, Class of 2013 as one of the mentors.

Students, staff and parents are invited to join this session and participate in conversation with Jack Frerer on his journey as a graduate of Redlands and The Juilliard School and his new career as a composer, producer and filmmaker, based in New York City.

This Zoom event is scheduled for Thursday 21 May (4.30pm-5.30pm). Parents and students will be emailed all relevant Zoom links in the coming days.

Biography – Jack Frerer

The “exuberant” and “delicious” (Boston Musical Intelligencer) music of Jack Frerer (b. 1995) has been performed across the US, Australia, Europe and Asia, and will performed this season by ensembles including the Nashville Symphony, the Arapahoe Philharmonic, the Albany Symphony’s “Dogs of Desire” ensemble, the Australian Youth Orchestra, and the UT Austin Wind Ensemble, among others. Jack is the recipient of a Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Morton Gould Composers Award from ASCAP, the Suzanne and Lee Ettelson Composers Award, and the Brian Israel Prize from the Society for New Music, and winner of both the Juilliard Orchestra and Gena Raps Chamber Music competitions. He was a Tanglewood composition fellow for 2019, a composer for the New York City Ballet’s 2019 Choreographic Institute, and is currently Composer-in-Residence with the Arapahoe Philharmonic. Jack studied with John Corigliano and Robert Beaser at The Juilliard School.

He is a co-creator and producer of The Roof, a collaborative film and performance series he created with dancer Liana Kleinman which features New York–based choreographers and composers.

Music Festivals 2020

The Music Department is sad to inform our community that the Redlands Junior and Senior Music Festivals, and the annual HICES Music Festival have been cancelled for 2020. We understand that this decision will have an impact on our Redlands Music community, particularly our musicians, who enjoy sharing their musical talents with family and friends. However, the government directive to restrict public gatherings has mandated these cancellations. As a department, we remain committed to both enriching the life of students and the wider Music community by working towards some possible presentation opportunities in Term 3, in providing students with performance goals as they continue to work on their repertoire, build technical skills and continue exploring their love of music making.

Remote Music Learning

Teaching over this past week has seen Music teachers and tutors engaging with the students in both On-Campus Learning and Remote Learning platforms. Over the past month, the Department has committed itself to ensuring that we continue to provide our students with instructional materials in all areas of Music. In focusing on delivering remote online platforms, we have been working in association with our exceptional Music specialists to develop and administer a range of innovative learning resources to support student learning and music making across the Academic, Cocurricular and Extra Subjects Music programs.

Music Program Offerings – Weeks 3 and 4

Academic Music

We look forward to welcoming students back into the classroom over the coming fortnight with the School’s gradual reintroduction to On-Campus Learning. In ensuring the safety and wellbeing of students and staff, access to Private Music Tuition rooms will be limited at this time. The only exception to this arrangement applies to the Yr 12 Higher School Certificate and International Baccalaureate courses of study, as we support these students in their final preparatory stages for all major practical works.

Cocurricular Music Ensembles

Junior School and Secondary Music Ensembles will continue to be delivered through online platforms in providing students with learning resources to work independently at home. This includes Google Classroom (Yrs 3-6) and iLearn (Yrs 7-12). Please note, Preparatory Choir and Preparatory Strings will not be running at this stage.

Please note that the following Secondary School Music Ensembles that occur in the morning will now commence at 7.15am rather than 7.30am, to allow students who live near-by time to travel. All students are encouraged to participate in the session, even if this means engaging with the tutorial for 15 minutes. All resources for independent learning are available to the students via their Music Ensembles iLearn Platform.

  • Intermediate and Advanced Guitar Ensembles (7.15am-7.45am)
  • Combined Choirs (7.15am-7.45am)
  • Intermediate Jazz, Stage Band and Jazz Vocal Ensemble (7.15am-7.45am)

Extra-Subjects Music (Individual Tuition and Groups)

From the start of this term, the department reintroduced all Individual Music Tuition and Group classes across the School. While these sessions will continue to be delivered by Music tutors remotely via Zoom, at this stage we are unable to provide On-Campus tuition. Music tutors will be ensuring that students are provided with instruction on alternate days, in consideration of their Academic classes during scheduled On-Campus Learning days. Revised Music tuition schedules will be issued by Music tutors prior to the commencement of the next week.
