Issue 13 2024 Term 2 Week 2 - 09 May 2024

From the Principal

Earlier today, parents and carers were notified that our Chair of the Redlands Board of Directors, Ms Glenda Mcloughlin, will be stepping down from her position and leaving the Board after almost eight years of dedicated service. Personally, I have worked closely with Ms McLoughlin in various capacities during her time on the Board, most notably over these past two years as I have moved into the Principal role. I wanted to acknowledge her for her unwavering support both for me as Principal and the School as a whole.

Under Ms McLoughlin’s stewardship, our School has prospered in all areas – academic, cocurricular, pastoral care, leadership and service. Some of the highlights during her time as Chair of the Redlands Board are:

  • a significant enhancement of the School’s facilities, most notably the delivery of the John Roberts Centre, Redlands Learning Hub and Fahl Garden, providing dynamic learning spaces that reflect the quality of our teaching and learning
  • the development and introduction of the School’s Strategic Plan 2021-2025, which has guided the direction of our School to prepare our students for the challenges of the future
  • the renewal of our partnership with Macquarie University for the next 30 years and the establishment of a 20-year partnership with Mosman Lawn Tennis Club, with upgrades to facilities at both sporting venues
  • the expansion of the Redlands Foundation Means-tested Scholarship Fund, providing the opportunity of a Redlands education to exemplary students who would otherwise not be able to attend our School
  • the recent introduction of a new modern Constitution for the School.

Her steady leadership of the governance of the School has not only successfully navigated us through the challenges of the pandemic and the opportunities of the implementation of our Strategic Plan, but has also ensured the School is primed for future success. I would like to formally thank Ms McLoughlin for her wise counsel, exemplary governance and dedicated service to Redlands.

I look forward to working closely with Chair Elect, Professor Glenn Wightwick, and continuing to build upon this strong partnership between the Board and the Executive to ensure we are providing the very best educational experience for our students.

Last term as part of their Christian Studies assessment, Year 7 students wrote me letters on how our Redlands values are illustrated in both the bible and here at school. Over the holidays I greatly enjoyed reading a selection of their reflections, and yesterday I visited 7G’s Christian Studies lesson to further unpack their insights. I was so impressed with their reflections and in depth feedback and came away further reminded that our Redlands values of compassion, fairness, honesty, moral courage, respect and responsibility are truly lived everyday here at school.

The persistent soggy weather over these first few weeks of Term 2 has certainly presented various challenges and on Saturday, there was an even article in the Sydney Morning Herald with the headline, “Weekend Sport Cancelled as Sports Grounds Waterlogged”. However, with the opening of our all-weather sports fields at Macquarie University, on Saturday morning I had the great pleasure of seeing some weekend sport as some of our Secondary School AFL and Football teams kicked off their season with matches on the new pitch. While we all look forward to the weather clearing so we can enjoy more outside activities, at least we have been able to play some of our sports fixtures on our new home ground.

At the beginning of this term I sent a letter to all families announcing that we will be moving to a single leadership model on the Junior Campus from the beginning of 2025 with one Head of Junior School (P-6) overseeing and leading Preschool through to Year 6. A link to the letter can be found here. This week I have been meeting with class parents in the Prep and Junior Schools to update them further and look forward to sharing more information with the community in the coming months. What I can affirm is that while we are looking at ways to improve our systems, processes and structures, our aim is that the outstanding educational experience our students receive on the Junior Campus, which our parents greatly value, will fundamentally not be changing but only be enhanced.

Lastly, I wish all mothers a Happy Mother’s Day for Sunday and look forward to celebrating with some of you at our Mother’s Day Breakfast on the Junior Campus on Monday morning.

Community Update

Like many independent schools, Redlands is governed by a voluntary Board of Directors. The role of the Board is to effectively represent and promote the interests of the School with a view to adding long term value to Redlands as an educational enterprise. The Board is responsible for setting and reviewing the strategic direction of the School as well as monitoring the implementation of that strategy by management. The Board seeks to be composed of a diversity of Directors who have the ability to contribute to the School through their experience, qualifications, talents and commitment to Redlands.

As communicated to our community earlier today, Professor Glenn Wightwick, has been elected as the incoming Chair of Redlands Board of Directors following the stepping down of current Chair, Ms Glenda McLoughlin who will also leave the Board after almost eight years of resolute and exceptional service. On behalf of the Redlands community I thank Glenda, for her service and significant achievements, in particular for being a key driver of connecting our School with the wider community throughout her tenure as Chair.

We look forward to further strengthening the engagement with our community with Glenn who is a current parent and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Enterprise at the University of Technology Sydney. Glenn has served on the School Board for the last four years, with the last two years as Deputy Chair. Please click here for more information on our Board of Directors.

It was a pleasure to welcome a number of parent groups on campus this week.  Our current Year 5 families attended an information session and tour of our Senior Campus to assist in their preparation for the transition across Military Road in 2026. Our Kindergarten was a hive activity yesterday as it opened its doors for future families to see this vibrant learning and play space in action. Our Secondary School Parent Contact Group (PCG) also convened on campus this week. Our PCGs continue to explore ways to keep our community connected, included and supported within the many and varied aspects of school life. If you are looking to connect with our community for support or guidance then please reach out to the passionate and diverse experience of our class and year group parents, the RPFA and Friends of Groups.

On Monday, we look forward to celebrating our Junior Campus Redlands Mothers and Carers. Please join us for coffee, conversation and a classroom visit by registering here.  I wish all mothers a Happy Mother’s Day for Sunday and look forward to seeing those that can make it to Monday’s event.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Support Redlands Future: Expansion of High Country Campus

For over a century, the Redlands High Country Campus in Jindabyne in the Snowy Mountains region has been a much loved location for our students. When Year 12 students leave the School, Camps and Winter School are among the top three programs they enjoyed most at Redlands.

“The Winter School final dinner was testament to the strong friendships which had developed. The tears flowed freely and no one wanted to go home, because the High Country Campus had become home. We watch the sunrise as we stumble to breakfast, red clouds scud across the mountaintops, pure white snow reflecting pink. Gradually the day becomes warmer. It is bright, sunny, and perfect. All around me, happy faces, and mountains fill the air.” Jessie Hodgkinson RL 2000

This year we are planning to have our very first Giving Day to raise much needed funds for the expansion of High Country Campus. Originally developed by the School in partnership with the Redlands Parents and Friends Association, High Country Campus was opened in 1996 with two accommodation buildings. Two more buildings have been added since.

Our new residential Moonbah Program for Year 9 students will commence in 2025, aligning with our Vision of inspiring students to achieve life readiness and to let their light shine and our Strategic Driver of supporting and challenging students to achieve personal excellence through programs and pathways. To accommodate the whole of Year 9 split over two terms, we need to be able to house approximately 20 more students and 12 more staff.

We are Seeking Support in Many Different Ways

Join us as a Matching Gift donor and inspire our community, help on the day or join the Giving Day organising team. If you interested, please contact me directly dcasimaty@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Platinum Luncheon | 140 Year of Service at Redlands

Next week we will be welcoming over 120 Alumni who graduated from Redlands 50+ years ago to our Platinum Luncheon. Up until 1978, Redlands was a girls school only.

As part of this Luncheon we will be welcoming Coralie Amos OAM, RL 1964, who is celebrating her 60th reunion. This year we are naming a scholarship after her to acknowledge her contribution to community service.

A special acknowledgement to Marguerite Gillezeau, Redlands Archivist, for preparing a wonderful history about Service at Redlands.

The Early Years of the School 1884 – 1945

In 1891, Redlands opened it’s doors to boarders as a need was growing and Miss Arnold had a strong personal connection with this decision, having been orphaned at a the age of five when her parents died of tuberculosis in London. Separated from her siblings, young Clara experienced the benefit of benefactors who ensured she completed her education at a small boarding school in St Albans, Herefordshire, modelled on a family environment and operating from the home of its Principal, Mrs Sarah Upton – a model Miss Arnold adopted.

In terms of external charities and social causes, the first school bazaar was held at the College for Girls on Christmas Eve, 1893 and raised a significant sum of money for the yet to be built Royal North Shore Hospital.

The Principals established the Old Girls Club in 1908, renamed the Old Girls Union (and now the Redlanders Association), as a way for alumni to keep connected with the school, both socially and philanthropically.

In 1918, students from Kindergarten to Year 12 knitted socks and balaclavas for the soldiers at the front. Fundraising fetes and music and drama productions were held to raise money for the Red Cross, YMCA and French-Australian League of Help, with the students also insisting on donating their prize money to the war effort.

The School’s commitment to charity, both towards fundraising and individual students, saw the first official Redlands scholarships awarded in the aftermath of World War I in 1921, establishing a tradition that has continued for over a century. The awarding of scholarships and bursaries and waiving of fees as the 1930s Depression created financial hardship for many families enabled students to stay on at Redlands at Miss Roseby’s expense. When she first bought Redlands in 1911, Miss Roseby had, in turn, experienced a benefactor in Miss Arnold. The Roseby sisters purchased Redlands as a business but leased the property until Miss Arnold’s death in 1932, paying only reduced rent, equivalent to the cost of Council rates. This act of generosity allowed Miss Roseby to concentrate on providing innovative education to her students. In 1934, when the School celebrated its 50th anniversary, it was the first time Redlands focussed on its own fundraising, raising much needed money for bursaries and school equipment. Nonetheless, service continued throughout the 1930s as the school community raised funds for the Rachel Forster Hospital and fostered two young girls in India. During the years of World War II, while the School held fetes and other fundraisers for the Red Cross and other charities, former students joined the armed services in even greater numbers than in World War I, working in a wide range of war related industries.

Next week: Service in the post-war era, SCEGGS Redlands 1945 – 1975.

Walks on Tracks

Weekly guided walks around the northern Sydney area are organised by Ann Marie, a wonderful RPFA volunteer. This is a great way to meet other Redlands parents and get in shape, plus a wonderful way to spend a morning discovering the many paths of the Sydney area.

The invitation for walks is open, so if you have friends or family who you think would like to come along, please feel free to bring them. Dogs are also welcome on most walks, look for the ???? below .

Walks are roughly 1 1/2- 2 hours and for those with the time we love to stop for a coffee afterwards. We have planned all the walks for the term so mark your calendars.  Next two shared here:

  • Wed 15 May: Balmoral to Chinamans Beach. Meet outside Balmoral Boatshed ????
  • Wed 22 May: Manly Dam. Meet at Wakehurst Parkway Golf Club car park. Upper Clontarf St Seaforth. Sorry no dogs this week.

Any questions, please contact Ann Marie on 0406 691 533.

Book Club

The Redlands Book Club is a group of Redlands parents – past and present – who share a love of reading. New members are always welcome! The Book Club meets twice each school term to discuss a book, rotating among members’ homes. Occasionally, outings are also organised to events, movies or shows that are tied in with books, including annual attendance at the Sydney Writer’s festival in May. If you would like to join Book Club, or simply want to know more, please contact Monica or Sabiha.

Monica shared ”We had a great meeting this week with the author, Lynne Johnson, of ‘The Bait Trap’. It was a lively discussion, both about the book and what’s involved in writing crime fiction”.

A number of Book Club members will be attending the Sydney Writers Festival this month. If anyone is interested in joining in, they can contact Monica or Sabiha (see details above) to find out more.

We are delighted to share the next four books and meeting date:

Behind the Scenes with the RPFA: Meet your Class Parents

A wonderful group of volunteers, Class Parents are in place from Redlands House all the way up to Yr 12. Their efforts in welcoming new parents, organising teacher celebrations and facilitating class social events go a long way in maintaining the connected and engaged school community we enjoy here at Redlands.

Check back here each week to meet 2024 Class Parents and discover how you can get involved!

If you could choose a Class Parent theme song what would be the title name?

Stayin’ Alive by the Bee Gees. That is success in my view – everyone alive and well! Plus I’ve found the parents and class parents in particular support me to do that!

Why did you decide to become a Class Parent, and what do you love most about it?

We’re new this year to Redlands and I thought it would be a great way to get to know other parents, the teachers and the school better plus I was hoping I could be representative of other parents who have similar questions / queries to mine. In addition, my co-class parent Ervina twisted my arm:) She’s the brains behind the operation! I love meeting everyone and hearing their stories and experiences with Redlands and parenting in general. The final reason is that my dad Peter was the volunteer Tuckshop Dad at my school when I was growing up and he did so in his army uniform to the shock and awe of all the students. He’s a terrible cook but if he could give back, then I thought I could find a way too!

What advice would you give to a parent or carer looking to get more involved in the school?

Just reach out to the school, your own class parents or the RPFA and let them know how you might like to contribute. I’m impressed with the many skill sets and experiences Redlands parents have. Some are experts in social event organising, some love sport, some have amazing PR/comms skills, some love music, some love to celebrate  different cultures and some love supporting amazing charities. There are lots of different ways to get involved in a way that suits your own interests and the time you have to give. I work full time so I thought that maybe I wouldn’t be able to play a role but I’ve found a way to get involved – I’m a little “feast or famine” about it depending on how the work week shapes up or if I’m travelling but everyone has been very flexible with that.

If you could trade places with your children for a day, what would you most want to experience?

Finding my true passions from scratch again – including getting back into music! I love music but life got busy and there hasn’t been space lately. Seeing Lluis’ passion for music is inspiring. I also love meeting new people so I think there’s something so exciting being in a school environment and meeting new friends that may end up being life long!

Do you have pictures of parent / family get-togethers you want to share?

Please send them to RPFA Note Day.

Year 9 Moonbah Program 2025

A bespoke residential experience, the Year 9 Moonbah Program, is underpinned by Redlands’ commitment to the development of each student’s personal growth. Living in community and on country at Redlands’ High Country Campus outside of Jindabyne, students connect, learn and lead to foster deep understanding and critical thinking via a rich and varied interdisciplinary curriculum. Through the 9-week program, students deepen independence, responsibility and are empowered to become the authors of their future selves.

Over 30 students from our current Year 8 cohort, who embraced the opportunity to form part of our student focus group for the 2025 residential program, are preparing themselves for a week of Connection in Week 4 this term. Today, Ms Jansons and Ms Matthews met with the Moonbah Connection Crew to outline the week-long Connection program. Students began the session with some games designed to get them moving and sharing – we cannot wait to take them away for a week mid-term so they can experience, enjoy and engage with each other in this wonderful setting. They look forward to sharing their adventures and experiences with the community in the weeks after they return. Stay tuned!

Transitioning from Homework to Home Learning: A Message to Parents

At Redlands, we’re committed to nurturing not just academic excellence but also fostering the skills necessary for lifelong learning. With this in mind, we’d like to share a gentle reminder regarding the importance of independent study for your child’s progress, particularly as they progress through the school years.

Research shows that regular independent study significantly contributes to academic success and personal development. Therefore, we encourage Year 7 and 8 students to engage in 60 minutes of independent learning each evening, while Year 9 and 10 students are encouraged to dedicate 90 minutes. Additionally, we suggest 3-4 hours of independent study over the weekends.

Independent learning or ‘Home Learning’ encompasses a variety of activities, including studying for or working on assessments, completing teacher-set tasks (primarily in Maths), revising daily content, reading and re-reading English texts, and finishing unfinished class tasks. Importantly, we emphasise independence in learning, encouraging students to not solely rely on teacher-set tasks for their academic growth.

To support this endeavour, we recommend employing effective independent learning strategies such as the SQ3R method. SQ3R stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review, providing a structured approach to comprehending and retaining information.

It’s vital for parents to understand that not all subjects will require nightly teacher-set tasks. Instead, students may be working on long-term projects spanning several weeks or even a term. Therefore, ‘homework’ in the traditional sense of the term, might not always be provided in finite amounts each evening, but this is not to mean that students should not be engaged in meaningful academic activity of an afternoon or evening.

By fostering a culture of independent learning, we aim to equip our students with the skills and habits necessary for success not just in their academic journey but throughout their lives.

Technology – in the evening young people need to switch off from devices. This week at our Stage 4 Assembly we spoke to students in Year 7 and 8 about being mindful of their technology use in the evening after receiving reports from students that they were experiencing overwhelm. Below are a few strategies that the Year Advisors shared with their cohorts.

Climate Fresk Challenge

The School’s commitment to sustainability continues to go from strength to strength. This week Redlands joined over 1.5 million other participants worldwide in welcoming Climate Fresk to the campus to work with some Year 9 students.

Climate Fresk is an innovative game that takes the best, most objective climate science in the world and makes it accessible to everyday people. By engaging with IPCC climate science, our students are not only expanding their understanding of the climate crisis but also becoming pity of a global community committed to change.

The game harnesses systems thinking to set the groundwork for informed decision-making and meaningful action. From understanding complex climate systems, they sit with how it makes them feel – from the ‘head’ to the ‘heart’ as it were. Finally, the session concludes with the ‘hands’ through provocations around how young people can make change and influence those around them to do so as well.

“I found the workshop extremely engaging as the forum in which we learnt about the topic was hands on and allowed a variety of perspectives. I particularly enjoyed the debate we had around activities and carbon emissions and when we created a flow chart that detailed the effects of our human activities.

I was very interested to know that 20,000 years ago when the average temperature of the earth was just five degrees cooler, much of our oceans were ice and could have been walked across.

Overall this workshop was a great opportunity and broadened by perspective on the underlying problem of climate change.” – Maya Turton

“The Climate Fresk workshop was very enjoyable, and opened my eyes to a lot of the climate-based problems that I didn’t know of or didn’t know the gravity of. I particularly enjoyed the debates, as it allowed all of us to express our opinions and highlight all different areas of the statements addressed. Overall the entire experience was enlightening and inspiring.” – Felix Elwin

It’s not just for students, there are monthly workshops in Sydney including one in the GreenHouse Tech Hub on 15 May as part of Climate Action Week.

Week 2 – Fly me to the Moon(bah)

This week a group of 30 students embodied our 2024 motto – ‘Step Beyond’ – by volunteering to travel down to our High Country campus in Week 4 to engage in a pilot run of our Moonbah Connection week. Our enthusiastic students met in a group on Wednesday to discuss what they might expect over the week and to receive important information on how they could make the most of this opportunity. Embodying our School’s desire to empower student voice, this week will give the students the chance to experience High Country Campus living first hand and share their experiences with their peers. Students left the meeting feeling excited and energised about the opportunity and I can’t wait to hear back from them how the week unfolds!

The inaugural 2025 Moonbah Program for Year 9 is certainly an exciting prospect for our cohort and the Moonbah Connection week should help to clarify some of the queries students still have over how their term away next year will operate. Stay tuned for more details from the students once they return!

Further information on the 2025 Moonbah Program, including a detailed FAQ and video, can be accessed through Pulse.

A student who definitely ‘stepped beyond’ recently was Henry Richardson, who was awarded the Step Beyond award in assembly on Tuesday. Henry showed great honesty and vulnerability in being part of the student voice at the end of our relationships workshops last week and sharing his thoughts on the material we had covered over the day. Other recognised, notable speakers were Lachlan Carter, Juliet Cooke and Fergus Kerr.

Cocurricular Club Spotlight – The Irregular

Now that we are into Term 2, students are well-immersed into the cocurricular clubs on offer at Redlands. The times and locations of all clubs can be found on Pulse.

Every Monday, The Irregular, the online newspaper club, meet, confer and write in LH2.6. After a term of organising and writing, the team are about to release their first paper and round of articles for the year with topics ranging from the Taylor Swift Eras tour experience; the impact of height in women’s sports; and an exploration of fast fashion through Temu and Shein. The newspaper encourages students to compose articles on topics of interest, encouraging them to engage in thorough research and careful composing and structuring of their work, so that it engages readers. So, if you are a keen writer or want to develop your writing skills, come along and check out The Irregular next Monday!

Yr 7 Study Tips

Next week is a busy week with multiple assessments for Year 7 Students. It is important for students to remember that this is a normal part of our education journey. Here are a few tips for students to help those pre-assessement jitters…

  • Remind yourself that you’ve prepared well and trust in your abilities.
  • Break down the assessment into smaller, manageable parts, and tackle each question with confidence.
  • Focus on the task at hand and avoid getting overwhelmed by worrying about the outcome.
  • If you feel stressed, take a moment to close your eyes and visualise success.
  • By staying calm and composed, you can approach your assessments with clarity and perform to the best of your ability.

Filling your Cup

During assembly this week, we talked to students about the important of self-care. We know it’s impossible to pour from a empty cup so we encouraged all students to think about two or three activities which can fill their cup.  Focusing on self-care as a student involves discovering activities and habits that bring you joy and relaxation. This might include hanging out with friends, playing sports, or exploring creative hobbies like drawing, writing, or music. It’s also essential to take breaks from screens and social media to recharge. Additionally, prioritising healthy habits such as getting enough sleep, eating well, and staying active contributes to your overall wellbeing.

Please pass on any success stories of students participating in these wellbeing activities to your Tutor or Year Advisors; we’re eager to hear about their achievements.

Day of AI – Friday 10 May

The Day of AI for students is an educational event aimed at providing young learners with insights into the world of artificial intelligence. It offers workshops, talks, and interactive sessions tailored to students’ interests and skill levels, allowing them to explore AI concepts, applications, and career opportunities. Through hands-on activities and engaging discussions, students gain practical knowledge and inspiration to pursue further studies or careers in AI-related fields. The Day of AI for students serves as a platform for fostering curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking skills essential for navigating the evolving landscape of technology and innovation. We are really looking forward to seeing all Yr 7 students engage in this day tomorrow.

As we ease into the new term, it has been pleasing to observe our students showing strong learning effort in their lessons as well as demonstrating very good standards in their conduct and behaviour. Across the term it will be a priority for these core expectations to remain high so that students can make the most of the learning opportunities at the School.

Year 6 Camp

This week Year 6 students have been attending their school camp in Canberra. I have previously mentioned the many benefits that school camps bring to the social and emotional development of students. Prior to leaving for Canberra, I spoke to the Year 6 students about my view of the main aims of such experiences which in summary are; to have fun and enjoy different activities in a different setting, to find opportunities to be challenged and thereby grow, and to practise empathy by putting others first which is pivotal to the success of the whole camp experience. When I caught up with the Year 6 students in Canberra this week it was clear that the Year 6 cohort were indeed putting these aims into action.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education and as such contributes funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. As a school we acknowledge and are grateful that this subsidy has supported the opportunity for our students to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

Year 6 Healthy Relationships Workshops and Parent and Carer Webinar

On 30 May, Year 6 teachers, PDHPE staff and School Counsellors will help external providers, ‘In Your Skin’, to lead and facilitate Healthy Relationships workshops. As per previous years, the half day workshops from Year 6 – Year 12  will be age appropriate and tailored specifically for each Year Group in line with our relationships, consent and sexuality education curriculum. More detailed information about the content of the workshops will be sent to Year 6 parents and carers next week. To support parents to navigate this area the School is facilitating an online information session featuring Dr Tessa Opie. Please refer to the details below from Mrs Sabine Partington:

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are pleased that we have once again engaged with ‘In Your Skin: Relationships and Sexuality Education’, to continue to partner with us as we further develop and implement our relationships, consent and sexuality education programs.

Dr Tessa Opie will be conducting a series of workshops and presentations for students in Years 6-12. Additionally, on Monday 13 May, Dr Opie will run an online information session on Relationships and Sexuality Education for Redlands parents and carers, from 6pm-7pm.

This presentation will focus on Years 6 through 12; however, all Redlands parents are welcome.

As a school, we are committed to ensuring our students are properly educated on these very important topics, and we are pleased that our continued engagement with Dr Opie will only further enhance our relationships, consent and sexuality education programs already taught through our PDHPE and pastoral care curricula.

Please feel free to contact me or the appropriate pastoral care staff if you have any further questions.

Yours sincerely

Parents Circles: Responsive Parenting and Raising Healthy Children

A message from our Junior Campus Counsellor, Silvia Roberts

Being a responsive parent sounds simple enough, but living high stress lives, often in isolation, lots of us know how nearly impossible it can be. Recognising that the essential condition for a healthy child’s development is the child’s relationship with nurturing adults, we invite you to join us for regular Parents Circles facilitated by School Counsellor, Silvia Roberts.

The Parents Circles will draw on specific topics and will be centred on providing a space for open discussions and questions. The sessions will also equip parents with a wide range of essential practical and emotional regulation skills, and guide parents through the art of fulfilling their children’s needs which are the essence of healthy positive parenting.

The topic for the session in Week 4 (Wednesday 22 May, 8.30 am – 9.30 am in Lucy Hill Library) is:

Family Systems – Boundary Systems: Boundaries Must Be Taught

  • Small children have no boundaries and develop whatever the boundary system parents have.
  • What happens when parents either wall up or lack boundaries? Or what happens when each parent has a different boundary system?
  • Exploring different possibilities of families’ boundary systems and family roles. Guiding parents to help children set up functional healthy boundaries, which in turn will help children to create healthy friendships.

In Week 7, we will be exploring the topic of Negative Core Beliefs in Children – Positive Parenting

  • Negative core beliefs in children can lead to them developing depression, anxiety, codependency, relationship issues or addictions later in life.
  • How can parents prevent the onset of negative core beliefs?
  • Exploring five core natural attributes of children and guiding parents to attend to those in a functional and effective way.

This will help their children develop each separate characteristic properly, which will lead to functional teens and adults who feel good about themselves rather than develop dysfunctional survival traits.

We extend a welcome to our prep and junior parents to attend. You are welcome to bring your own coffee or tea. As this is a parenting circle of support, numbers are limited to 20 to keep it small enough for interactive discussion so please book your space here.

Wayside Chapel Update (from our Junior School Captains)

Thank you everybody for your kind donations on Friday, for Wayside Chapel. As well as a hefty amount of money, many toiletries were brought in to school on Friday for Wayside Chapel. We raised a total of $1938.85. We have the goal to raise the most money ever raised in a calendar year by a school for Wayside Chapel, so these donations have really helped.

Our goal is $4300, we have $2400 to go!

Thank you everybody for the support.

The Importance of Giving Back

Teaching children the value of ‘giving back’ fosters empathy, gratitude, and social responsibility. By engaging in acts of kindness and service, young learners develop a sense of purpose and fulfillment while recognizing their privilege. Ultimately, it nurtures compassionate and responsible people who understand the importance of helping others and building a better society. This is what our Redlands value of compassion is all about. Our daily conversations and acts of kindness towards others develop not only compassion but pure kindness in our students. Our Redlands community is always looking for ways our children can ‘give back’.

One way that you and your child can do this is to join the Redlands Prep community for a Kids Giving Back – cook4good session. Cook4Good is a 2-hour activity where children contribute by cooking nutritious meals for those facing homelessness and food scarcity.

Sessions are on Saturdays from 2-4pm at Kids Giving Back Paddington, with a limit of 25 kids per session. Register for one or both of our upcoming dates:

Term 2 session, June 1st

Term 3 session, August 3rd

Wet Weather Fun!

One of my fondest memories as a child at school was getting out in the playground and jumping in puddles after it had rained! I would love our Redlands learners to also indulge in this fun activity this year without worrying about getting their shoes or socks wet. For this fun to occur, we need the children to have a pair of gumboots and a raincoat that they can access at school. This is not compulsory but if you would like to, please send a labelled pair of simple gumboots and a raincoat to school with your child that they can put on themselves. These will be sent home at the end of the term.

Secondary Sport

Great weather to be a duck! Winter has certainly started and thrown some curveballs for the winter season. However it was great to see some excellent sport played across the weekend with a number of Tennis, AFL, Football, Netball and Hockey teams managing to get in some great fixtures.

A key focus this term for sport is empowering young adults in order to significantly contribute to life readiness. By fostering skills and traits within sport we are able to set students up for success in life beyond the athletic arena. Within sport no matter the level competing we are working towards the following skills:

  • Self-Discipline and Time Management – regular practice and adherence to regular schedules, students learn to manage their time effectively, balancing academics, sports and other responsibilities, this discipline translates to work and personal relationships.
  • Resilience and Perseverance – facing challenges and learning from failures allows teenages to develop both skills, they will understand the value of hard work, dedication and bouncing back from setbacks which are crucial when faced with life’s obstacles.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration – working together as a team towards a common goal, being able to communicate effectively and resolve conflict, these are vital in any profession or social setting.
  • Leadership and Decision Making – whether team captains, future leaders, mentors or role models, leading within a team requires making quick decisions, motivating others and taking responsibility for outcomes. all of which are skills that are transferable to leadership roles in academics, career and/or community settings.
  • Goal Setting and Achievement – setting and striving toward goals is fundamental in sports, learning to set realistic goals, creating plans and tracking progress is something that Redlands does well, particularly within Coaching Conversations within Tutor Groups. Achieving success in sports boosts self-confidence and instils a sense of accomplishment, motivating teenagers to pursue their aspirations in other areas.

Through our Sports programs we are certainly assisting students to acquire and develop a toolkit of skills that will prepare and empower them for the challenges and opportunities they’ll encounter throughout their lives.

Round 1 Recap:

Congratulations to everyone who was able to play last Saturday. The conditions were not great but our players showed resilience, responsibility and commitment turning up to their matches.

We had mixed results and already started to work on things that we can do better on the field for round 2 of the ISA competition.

Well done to our teams who performed well and gave it on the day, our Junior Girls A coming home with a great draw away from Barker, both Second XI Girls and Boys started with wins, 13A boys dominating the game against St Andrew’s and lastly the 15A,16A and 14A drawing their matches – a very good start.

ISA Round 2 our Girls program is at our new Synthetic at Macquarie and most of our boy’s program will be at Strathfield playing a very hard round against St Patricks.

Come along and support us!

Gerry Gomez
Director of Football

Hockey

Last weekend marked Round 1 of the ISA Hockey Season and all three teams played at home (Barker) against Oxley. Despite some indifferent weather leading up to the weekend, the rain held off and we had three competitive matches. The 1sts started the day off strong with a 1-0 win and a solid defensive effort from all involved. The 2nds followed this up with another win and the 3rds put in a good first performance despite the result. Looking forward to round 2 at home again.

Netball

What a sensational start to the season.  With nine wins to open the season. It was so great to see, we had loads of support from parents and siblings, nearly all players had cut their nails too and there were no cool shoes – WAHOO!!

Player of the week: This season we will name players/trainers of the week throughout and share here in Note Day each week. These players demonstrate commitment to the team in training and/ or a strong performance in games.

  • Firsts: Tahlia Stone, a valiant first game with the First VII, excellent shooting accuracy and many ball assists in the movement in to the circle.
  • Inter D: Le Shyan Chua, showed great resilience this first game in trialling a new position of GK. She did very well, with lots of tips and intercepts.
  • Junior E: Harlow Boddington, played the whole game keeping up high energy around the court. Had lots of great intercepts with tight defence and quick offloads with the ball.
  • Inter A: Jessie McKeown, a great hustle throughout the game in the goal circle, read the play well and got some great intercepts.
  • Senior 3: Syrah Hargrave, incredible shooting and was a key playmaker down the court. You could see her performance uplifted the whole team and pushed them to reflect the high standard she was playing at
  • Inter C: Penny Vincent-McGovern, had a great game in C, helping the ball get down the court to the circle edge and getting a few tips and intercepts
  • Junior H: Elysia Angus, played a great game as captain, gave lots of energy and had a great attitude. Made lots of intercepts and got the ball down the court.
  • Junior A: Liv Law, played a  great game, didn’t stop running and intercepting. Had great feeds in to the circle.
  • Inter C: Annie Matthews, played with high energy and utilised the plays practiced at training. Also tried a new position at the end of the game.
  • Junior B: Issy Salz, kept on running and showed resilience in competing with strong players.
  • Inter E: Eva Fitzhenry, had the most stellar defence. Got great rebounds and intercepts, great getting the ball out of the circle and centre third nice and quick.
  • Junior C: Emma Foley, displayed great shooting and rebounding. She read the play of others around her and made great drives into space. In team huddles she lifted the energy of her other team mates.
  • Junior G: Zara Siva, played a full strong game, maintaining tight defensive play whilst consistently reading the game and creating good breaks for her team mates.

On the field this weekend we are looking for players to execute core skills at a high level. We have focused heavily on what we can control as individuals on the field in pre season. We hope to see strong chop tackles, catch and pass and execution of numbers overlaps and/or positional mismatch.

Tennis

We had a great first week of Winter Tennis!

Well done to all the ISA teams who played very well against St Andrew’s Cathedral School on Saturday.

It was an outstanding performance from Redlands ISA 3 (Miles Woodhouse, Regan Vom, Bowen Shiao and Jonathan O’Carrigan) who defeated St Andrew’s 8-0.

The other members of Redlands ISA 3 (Louis Dobson and Anay Mishra Mall) stepped in for Redlands ISA 1 and played extremely well, with Louis Dobson winning his singles, a great effort from a Year 7 playing in Division 1.

Special mention also goes to Redlands ISA 7 who won 5-3 and Redlands ISA 9 who won 7-1 over St Andrew’s Cathedral School.

Well done to all the teams!

Students, parents and visitors enjoyed the new tennis centre, and we are looking forward to hosting all the ISA home matches at Mosman Lawn Tennis Club over the next few weeks.

Good luck to all teams this Saturday!

Water Polo

Competition has begun, a wonderful start for our Intermediate age teams with two strong wins on Monday Night!

Trainer of the week: This season we will name players/trainers of the week throughout the term on Note Day each week. These players demonstrate commitment to the team in training and strong performance in games.

  • Opens Girls: Ruby Voice
  • Inters Girls: Maddie Dunnet
  • Iners Boys: Lukas Radich

Focus for the week

Following our success from Monday night games, we will continue to focus on good comprehension of the game and further refining our ball skills and movement. A key takeaway from the games over the last few days is fitness and movement in the water, especially over the last few quarters. As such, this week will primarily focus on enhancing our fitness and skills in the water, such as practicing defence; ensuring that the body and arms are out of the water when an opposing player is attempting to shoot. Additionally, we will also be working on communication between players when the game is in play in order to build effective teamwork and avoid game confusion.

 A few reminders

  • Fixtures have been loaded onto Pulse and student’s calendars.
  • Open Water Polo girls, your compulsory 1x Gym session on Tuesdays 3.30-4.30pm.
  • Inter teams, to attend the Fitness session, please read the Fitness Center pulse page. Inter team students can select the morning they wish to attend but will need to register their attendance.

Uniform

  • The Redlands sports uniform should be worn to all trainings and matches (students are not permitted to wear any non-Redlands branded clothing). In the event of inclement weather students should wear their Redlands fleece or sports tracksuit.
  • Students must wear trainer style sneakers that are preferably white with non-marking soles. It is part of our shared responsibility to ensure that students wear footwear that aligns with the activity to be undertaken. High top sneakers, Vans, Converse etc. are not appropriate for School Sport.

Junior Sport

Round 1 Representative Sport

In very wet conditions we commenced our Winter Sport Fixtures for 2024. The majority of our fixtures were able to go ahead despite the weather and in Football we won 5 out of their 8 matches played at home. Well done to those students who played in their first representative team on Saturday. Special mention to three Year 4 students in particular who stayed behind after their 4A Football match and played for the 5C team who were short players due to sickness. Well done Mason, Gus and Moos.

Most of our Netball matches were able to go ahead and given the number of new students to this sport we had some great results, but more importantly showed excellent potential for growth. Hockey had 1 win and 1 loss away and like Netball the girls excelled in what is a new sport for most of them.

Some reminders for both families and students;

  • If your child is sick night before or morning of please complete the online absence form through Pulse so their coach is aware of it and can make modifications.
  • Please be in correct playing kit and at the venue 30min prior to kick off time
  • Please allow time for travel and parking as Saturday morning traffic for both club and school sport has been compared to midweek peak hour traffic.
  • Let’s continue to create a culture of thanks, students to individually thank their coaches before their departure after the post-game huddle.

Cross Country Carnival The Cross Country Carnival which will take place on Tuesday 14 May for all Junior School students. The carnival will be held at St Leonards Park, St Leonards. We will have full access to the entire Park and students will enjoy an open and challenging course. Each student will complete the course twice (two laps) to achieve 2.0km total distance.

Our aim is for this to be a fun experience for everyone on the day but also provide a great experience and challenge for those aiming to progress to HICES and CIS where the courses present many different challenges. Upon arrival at the venues students in each grade will be divided into two groups (Boys Championship Race and a Girls Championship Race) which will run as separate events.

After the event the result will be sorted into age groups with the top 5 runners in boys and the top 5 runners in girls in each age group will make up the Redlands team that will participate at the HICES Carnival in Bathurst on the 21 May.

Please refer to our Cross-Country Carnival page on Pulse for all information relating to this carnival.

Junior School Athletics Carnival- Field Events Trials

As previously advertised, in preparation for our Athletics Carnival students will be completing a unit of Athletics in their PE classes in Term 2 which will cover High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put and Discus. Redlands Pulse Orientation and Navigation Video

Our intranet, Redlands Pulse, is the first port of call for all Junior School Sport related enquiries. A video has been produced to show you how to navigate through Pulse. You can view this short video here.

Redlands Pulse -The Junior School Sport pages on Redlands Pulse will continue to be the ‘source of truth’ for all information relating to sport this term. I am asking that if parents have an enquiry relating to sport that your first port of call will be the Junior School Sport section of Redlands Pulse.

Sport Information Booklet

For all Sport information regarding what sports we offer when, how to navigate our documents, as well as information on Uniforms and Carnivals please refer to our Parent Information Booklet on Pulse.

Wednesday Sport Inability to Train

If your child has an injury that prevents them from training, please send through an email to Junior Sport juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au requesting they ‘sit out’ of training for that particular session. We can then forward this to the relevant external coaching staff. Where applicable please include when they can return to normal training, so coaches are aware of this. That way coaching staff are aware of an injury that prevents them from participating at the venue but also allows us to be aware of periods where they are medically required to ‘sit out’.

Representative Sport Student Absence

If students are absent on match day, parents are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.

Drama and Theatre

Reviews: Year 11 Excursion to Sydney Theatre Co – Into the Shimmering World

Last night, the year eleven HSC and IB drama students had the opportunity to attend Into the Shimmering World by Angus Cerini. This play follows a rural Australian couple as they navigate grief that comes in many forms, I noticed that the themes and structure of this production very much mirrored the piece the HSC classes will be assessed on in June, Ruby Moon by Matt Cameron. It was incredible to see a play with such similar structure only four weeks before our performance evening as their use of elements of production to drive a five person play was incredibly inspiring. In particular, the use of sound (or the lack of it) and lighting design to build tension was particularly revealing as a simple silence made the audience question everything the play had previously told us.
This was until a thunderclap that felt like it shook the building itself accompanied by perfectly timed flashing lights brought us into a moment of joy with the couple, after months of drought, there was finally a storm. I look forward to continuing rehearsals with the insight this play gave me and I can only hope our duologues will be half as impactful when it comes time for us to perform.
Serafina Scotting, Year 11 HSC Drama

On Wednesday evening we were given the opportunity to see Into the Shimmering World by Angus Cerini, directed by Paige Rattray and produced by Sydney Theatre Company. A key takeaway for me were the outstanding elements of production and the interesting themes which were presented. One of the most poignant themes was water and the hope that it provides to rural farmers. This theme was represented through the lighting which would turn blue and the use of audio effects such as the sound of rain. Another apparent motif was the trees, which one of the protagonists, Ray, constantly brings up. This idea of trees allowed for the representation of life. This theme was often referred to through dialogue and props with the small tree saplings that stayed on the stage after they were brought on. Finally one of the other significant symbols is “The Crook” which represents death as he is constantly hunting. It is also implied that the stress he invoked is the reason Flossie, Ray’s wife, passed. “The Crook ” is only ever referred to through dialogue and sound effects of gunshots. This gives “The Crook” an ambiguity which relates to the mystery of death. Overall, the themes that were propelled by production elements in Into the Shimmering World helped build the play’s meaning.
Eshan Eliatamby, Year 11 HSC Drama

Redlands School Play

Following more than 70 amazing auditions and many callbacks we are thrilled to announce the cast for this year’s play:

Max Perry, Charlee Kwintner, Josh Farrant, Freya Kittle, Tali Feldman, Krishna Gupta, Millie Winton, Eshan Eliatamby, Aneke Golowenko, Liam Petersen, Remie Gibbs, Hiro Phillips, Megan Kirkpatrick, Abbie Sewell, Angus Baker, Jaiden Murphy, Betti Butcher, Jasper Houchell, Ben Hanning, Sarah Zeppel, Eliza Draper, Jasper Hanly-Atmore, Serafina Scotting, Juliette Treloar, Louis Abrahams.

Away is set in the Australian summer of 1967-1968 opening with an end of school term performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. As families plan and depart on their Summer holidays, the Shakespearean themes of suffering and reconciliation persist. Curiously the different families end up at the same destination and are ultimately united during a fierce storm.

British immigrants Harry and Vic love their adopted country but are faced with their son Tom’s illness. Jim and Gwen fret over their daughter Meg’s blossoming independence and her friendship with Tom, of whom they do not approve. Roy (Tom’s school Principal) is unable to console his grief-stricken wife Coral following the death of their only son in the Vietnam war.

With the help of some Shakespearean fairies and a spectacular storm, these families are reconciled and face the future anew. This is a story about the coming of age of a group of individuals and the unification of the country in which they live. Despite being set almost 40 years ago, this multi-award winning play is as relevant as ever with its themes of reconciliation and loss.

Away is clever, funny and yet very moving. It is full of the familiar family ingredients, Gow has constructed a magical play that every Australian can relate to. It depicts the hopes of new generations, prompting us to consider what is ultimately most important in our lives.  This play is a heartwarming, funny, yet serious reflection of who we are as Australians, it’s a story about our history, our lives and our dreams.

This will be a fabulous and heartfelt performance for all to enjoy at the Zenith Theatre (Chatswood) 8-10 August – ticketing information to follow.

Drama and Theatre Extra Subjects Programme

Our wonderful Senior TheatreSports team competed against other schools in the state last week at Linfield Learning Village and this week our brand new Intermediate team went out to compete at the Tara girls school!

Both teams played extremely well! We wish to congratulate all our players on their exceptional improvisation and TheatreSports skills! It was a wonderful night representing Redlands!

Congratulations to our fabulous Senior team: Hallie Hunt, Sholto Mirrlees – Black, Remie Gibbs, Serafina Scotting and Juliet Treloar!

Congratulations to our fabulous Intermediate team: Hugo Burton, Mathew Krapovnitskiy, Liv Dijkstra and Eva Fitzhenry.

This is the first time these TheatreSports players have gone out to represent Redlands. They did exceptionally well in a very tight competition. They came in 4th place out of 9 schools and only missed out on going through to the next heat by 2 points! We are so proud of what they achieved on the night! What an outstanding first go!! Well done to the Intermediate team.

If you would like to come along to our free lunch time TheatreSports club and have a go at some wacky high energy games, we can be found in the Learning Hub on level 3, room 3.6 on Tuesday lunch time. All are welcome!

Housekeeping: We kindly ask that all parents and guardians be on time to the extra subject pick up locations after the classes finish.

You will find the various finishing times and locations for Junior school pick up on the Redlands Drama and Theatre pulse page. If you are running late your child/ren will be taken to OOSH and you will be charged accordingly.

Music

As we start to ramp up towards our biggest cocurricular music events of year, the Senior Music Festival and Junior Music Festival, it’s important that our students are demonstrating preparation, commitment and attendance at every rehearsal.

We are asking our community to help to prioritise these rehearsals, as when every person is there in our ensembles, there is significant learning and growth. Conversely, when multiple students are away each week, the whole ensemble suffers and progress is hindered. Whilst we know some appointments are unavoidable, we ask that wherever possible external commitments are not scheduled during ensemble time.

Making time in regular practice routines for our cocurricular ensembles is an expectation we have of our students, and we appreciate your support in helping our students practice for their weekly ensemble rehearsals. Students also should ensure they bring a pencil to every single rehearsal, along with all other equipment.

Thank you to the students, parents and carers in our community that already do make this a priority, and for your support in making sure our students are getting the full benefit and value of being in a cocurricular ensemble.

Senior Music Festival 2024 – Kaleidoscope

Save the date! The Senior Music Festival, involving our entire cocurricular line-up of over 200 students on the Senior Campus, is coming up! Tickets will be on sale later this term.

Vocal Competition – Guest Adjudicator Brad Cooper

We are incredibly grateful to have the wonderful Brad Cooper, a Tenor with Opera Australia, adjudicating our upcoming Vocal Competition.

Brad Cooper is a versatile artist who excels in opera, operetta, lieder, and kabarett. In 2021, he returned to the stage with a notable performance at the Sydney Opera House and planned performances in Handel’s “Messiah” and Beethoven’s “Fidelio.” Brad has successfully launched a new Weimar Republic Kabarett show, “BERLIN ELECTRIC,” which is set to debut in Europe. His past roles include significant performances in Wagner’s operas and various leading roles across major global opera houses. Additionally, Brad has a robust concert portfolio, including performances with high-profile artists and at prestigious events. He is deeply committed to music education, running workshops and projects aimed at engaging diverse audiences. Brad’s education was supported by several trusts and scholarships, underpinning his successful international career.

We look forward to the wonderful advice and adjudication that he will provide for our successful Vocal Comp auditionees.
