Issue 12 2023 Term 2 Week 2 - 04 May 2023

From The Principal

Yesterday we hosted our 2023 Platinum Lunch which honours our alumni who attended Redlands at least 50 years ago. It was a wonderful occasion as 101 of these graduates were in attendance sharing their memories, reflections and stories from their time at Redlands.

The guest speaker was Redlander, Barbara Wellesley AM (Class of 1955), who has a long and distinguished career aimed at helping to improve the lives of children and young people, including being co-founder and National Director of Good Beginnings Australia. Her many accomplishments saw her being awarded Membership of the Order of Australia for her national and international work with and for children.

In her reflections on her time at Redlands, Ms Wellesley spoke of the strength of her relationships with staff and fellow students, being taught the importance of values such as respect and fairness and how she was always encouraged to back herself and follow her dreams which eventually led to such a distinguished and rewarding career.

What struck me about Ms Wellesley’s reflections was that if we spoke to our current students about what they value most about their Redlands education, they would share many of the same reflections Ms Wellesley did. We have a special culture here at Redlands, a culture that has been developed and nourished since our founding 139 years ago and continues to thrive today.

I am so pleased to see our connections with our alumni community continue to strengthen and look forward to hearing more of their stories and insights about their time at Redlands at various events in the months ahead.

Community Update

It was a real treat for me to join our alumni for the Platinum Girls Luncheon this week. This popular and much-loved event welcomes Redlanders who attended the School more than 50 years ago, providing a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the enduring and diverse experiences, friendships and achievements of our former students. Our cherished alumni thoroughly enjoyed each other’s company and delighted in the speeches and musical performances provided by our talented students. The recollections of Ms Barbara Wellesly AM (RL 1955) were particularly engaging as she recounted her time at Redlands through the 1940s and 50s.  My thanks to the Class of 1970 who hosted me at their table and also to all those that contributed to this successful event.

It was a pleasure to attend the Junior and Secondary School Parent Contact Group (PCG) Meetings this week. Our PCGs continue to explore ways to keep our community connected, included and supported within the many and varied aspects of school life. If you are looking to connect with our community for support or guidance then please reach out to the passionate and diverse experience of our class and year group parents, the RPFA  and Friends of Groups.

The Redlands community is again rallying to support life-saving breast cancer research through participation in the annual Mother’s Day Classic. 57 Australians are diagnosed with breast cancer and 9 Australians will lose their life to this disease each day. Your support of Team Redlands, through the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), will fund life-saving research to improve breast cancer detection, develop new treatments, and allow people with breast cancer to live longer and better lives.  Your support of Team Redlands can be activated here.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Kindest regards

Platinum Luncheon – Celebrating 100 Years of Heritage

This week we were excited to welcome just over 90 ‘Old Girls’ back to Redlands. This was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the rich history and development of our Redlands programs and facilities and celebrate 100 Years since the Liggins Building was open.

The Liggins Building opened on 9 May 1923 in honour of Redlands co-founder Miss Elizabeth Liggins. First a boarding house, then kitchen, art room laboratory, pottery workshop, and during WWII it even housed the School’s bomb shelter. Gergaynia Shelley (nee Beckett) RL 1957 and Alumni Award Winner 2023 remembers senior biology classes downstairs in the Science Lab.

Our guests were very impressed to see the how the campus has grown since their times. They also appreciated hospitality of our students and staff. A special Thank You to Year 11 students who kindly escorted our guests and our extraordinary musical performances from Years 7, 9 and 11 students whose preparation and talent enabled them to shine and bring a joy to our guests. Thank you to the Redlanders Alumni Association members joining us for this event and Natalie Davies RL 1987 in particular for her address.

A booklet full of memories from our Platinum Redlanders was compiled to celebrate and recognise this special centenary milestone. If you wish to read these enjoyable memories click HERE

Redlands Parents and Friends

Welcome to May! We have a busy month ahead – with more secondhand uniforms to sell, funds to raise, mothers to celebrate and teachers to appreciate.

We are currently planning on selling secondhand uniforms on Tues 9 May and Tues 16 May from 8.30-10am at the RPFA storage unit at 1 Monford Pl, around the corner from the uniform shop. We are also looking into the possibility of another Sat morning sale – watch this space for more info. As usual, our secondhand uniform sales provide great value for families and also give each of us an opportunity to contribute to the clear benefits of recycling. In addition, funds raised are contributed towards the means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund. We will only be accepting payments by EFTPOS. Please also remember to bring your own bags for your purchases.

We are also participating in two events in the fight against breast cancer.

On Sun 14 May, complete a 5km or 10km walk or fun run around the Sydney Botanic Gardens with the family to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research at the 2023 Mother’s Day Classic. Mums, dads and kids are all welcome to join in the festivities. There are limited pink Redlands T-shirts from past MDC races available in the Uniform Shop. Or just wear your Redlands baseball caps! Join our team in the race (make sure to join Team Redlands!) or donate to this great cause. For more information, please contact Jennifer or Sophia.

On Fri 26 May and Sat 27 May, we will be reviving our pink sock charity fundraising program. Teams will be wearing pink socks for their fixtures (you can purchase the socks at the uniform shop or on Flexischools) and there will be food and treats available for sale (please contact your respective FoGs to volunteer to make and/or sell baked goods), with proceeds donated to charity. Please come support our teams and fundraising efforts.

Fri 26 May – Senior Football & AFL at Macquarie Fields

Sat 27 May – Senior Rugby at Macquarie Fields, Senior Netball at NBISC, Senior Hockey at Bowman Field; Junior Football at Redlands Junior School oval

All Junior School and Prep School students mums are also invited to join the Mother’s Day Celebration on Mon 15 May from 7.45am in the Piazza on the Junior Campus. To assist with catering, please book your attendance here.

The RPFA will be organising morning tea at the end of the month to show our appreciation to all our fabulous teachers and support staff. Please check with your class and/or year parents to see if there are any additional initiatives being coordinated for specific teachers. For past students of Mrs. Benneyworth, who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma during the summer break, please send a picture or short 5-10 second video to BenneyworthBootcampers@outlook.com before 25 May for us to collate and send to her to wish her well. Please include the student’s name and year in Mrs. Benneyworth’s class.

Walks on Tracks

Weekly guided walks around the northern Sydney area are organised by an RPFA volunteer. This is a great way to meet other Redlands parents and get in shape, plus a wonderful way to spend a morning discovering the many paths of the Sydney area.

The invitation for walks is open, so if you have friends or family who you think would like to come along, please feel free to bring them. Dogs are also welcome on most walks.

Next week’s walk on Wed 10 May will be in Hunters Hill. Followed by brunch at Keiko’s. Meet at 44 Carranya Rd, Riverview with a plate to share at 8.40am.

Any questions, please contact Ann Marie Kimber or call 0406 691 533.

Book Club

Come along and enjoy the lively conversation of other Redlands parents from all around the world with a common love of reading. The Book Club meets twice each School term, rotating among members’ homes. There is also an annual visit to Sunday Writer’s festival (May) and sometimes to movies that are tied in with a book discussion.

Our next meeting is Wed 17 May from 7pm at Tania’s house, 23 Calypso Ave Mosman. We will be discussing Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. Please email Tania or call her on 0450473484 to let her know if you are coming so that she can plan appropriately for numbers. Reminder, we will only have light nibbles and drinks, no dinner. Please let Tania know if you would like to bring something.

If you want to pick up our next book, it is The Familiars by Stacey Halls. We will meet to discuss this book on 19 Jun at morning tea. If you would like to host the meeting, or if you might be interested but have concerns about what’s involved, please contact Monica or Sabiha to have a chat.

Also, if you would be happy to host a meeting in the future but are just not available to do so in May/June, please let us know as well! We still have 4 more meetings in the second half of the year to organise!

Week 2 – Key Highlights!

Students

Yr 10 student Sophie Yu has won the North Sydney local finals of the Plain English Speaking Award, held on 28 April at the Northern Beaches Secondary School! She will now proceed to the regional final at the Arts Unit in Lewisham in late May. Her remarkable achievement deserves our full congratulations. We also express our appreciation to the coaches and teachers who have provided unwavering support throughout the journey, including Ms Vyvian Kang.

Staff

Mr Cameron Ellis has now been formally appointed the Secondary School Head of Sport, moving from an Acting to a permanent role. Cameron has established strong connections throughout the Redlands community and congratulate him on this appointment.

Parents

Our second Wellbeing Support Session for parents and carers was well attended on Tuesday night this week, led by Ms Lara Luitingh and Ms Shannon Pearce. It was affirming and helpful to hear a range of supportive techniques on managing teen stress, anxiety and other big emotions. Key topics included:

  1. How a teen’s emotional development influences a once peaceful home
  2. How parents can adjust their everyday parenting approach to encourage their teen to express their emotions
  3. Helping teens regain emotional control when it seems like their emotions are overwhelming them
  4. Recognising harmful emotional control and when/how to seek help

A range of resources were shared with attendees which can be found here.

Looking Ahead to Week 3

Next week, Ms Jana Gomes who works alongside Dr Tessa Opie, from ‘In Your Skin: Relationships and Sexuality Education’, will return to Redlands to continue to partner with us as we further develop and implement our relationships, consent and sexuality education programs.

The content of these sessions will be age appropriate and tailored specifically for each year group in line with our relationships, consent and sexuality education curriculum. Students in Years 8, 10 and 12 will engage via half day workshops led by In Your Skin with breakout sessions facilitated by Redlands staff who have undertaken training.

In addition, students in Years 7, 9 and 11 will each have one-hour presentations led by In your Skin. As a school, we are committed to ensuring our students continue to receive appropriate education on these critical topics, and we are pleased that our engagement with In Your Skin will continue to enhance our relationships, consent and sexuality education programs already taught through our PDHPE and pastoral care curricula.

At our Secondary School Parent Contact Group Meeting held this afternoon, our Dean of Students, Ms Marita Jansons and our Assistant Dean of Students, Ms Sarah Matthews, will talk parents through how we ready students for these sessions. Marita has found great success and buy-in from students via valuable Student Focus Groups, held in the weeks preceding the training. This practice enables the students to share issues which are currently surfacing for them and means that in consultation with In Your Skin, we can contemporaneously tailor our programs to our students specific needs and interests.

Parent Presentation
‘Teens, Parties, Gatherings & Alcohol: What Do Parents Need to Know?’

Next week, Redlands is pleased to welcome back Mr Paul Dillon (DARTA) to present to parents. Using the most current data this presentation will examine the use of alcohol and other drugs by school-based young people. Some simple strategies will be provided to help ensure teens are able to interact with friends on a Saturday night and, at the same time, reduce the risk of underage drinking and the potential dangers associated with such behaviour. It aims to empower parents with a positive message and assist them in having open and honest family discussions in this complex area. Paul will also be presenting to Yr 10-12 during the day. The parent presentation will be hosted on Wednesday 10 May, 6.00pm – 7.30pm in Redlands Hall. This will be a parent only event. Registration is via Redlands Pulse.

Looking Ahead to Important Presentations for Yr 10, 9 and Yr 8 Parents/Carers and Students

Yr 10 Senior Pathways and Subject Expo Evening

Yr 9 Experience to Extend Evening

Yr 8 The Building Blocks for Success in Secondary School

2023 Requests for Leave

In order to minimise the disruption of students’ learning, Redlands does not endorse requests for leave of absence during term time, particularly at the end or beginning of term. Each case will be judged on an individual basis before permission is granted in these exceptional circumstances.

Requests for leave and notification of intention to take leave should be directed to the Head of Secondary School, well in advance, by a formal email to gvandepeer@redlands.nsw.edu.au

Taking leave during term time for family holidays is generally not endorsed and will require the student to submit any ‘hand-in’ assessments prior to the leave being taken. Additionally, students who miss a test or exam whilst on leave may find that given the inability for a ‘catch-up test’ the marks for this assessment are not counted in the student’s summative report total.

To The Rescue: Dropping The Drop Off Routine

Over the past two weeks, there has been a steady stream of parents dropping forgotten items off in the Student Services Centre or delivering food to the gates during breaks.

Forgetfulness is part of human nature. When we forget something, we often beat ourselves up about it.

Normally when students forget their home learning, presentation cards, sports equipment, lunches, etc., calling or texting their parent/s and asking them to bring these items is a quick problem solve.

Whilst forgetting a needed item can evoke heightened emotions in teens, it can also present an opportunity for teens to develop their self-management and problem-solving abilities.

After high school students will be responsible for themselves and their mistakes. Some of their mistakes won’t be fixed as easily as sending a text. Practising that responsibility now prepares teens for life beyond school.

Teenagers use their phones for everything. Next time your teen reaches out asking for you to drop something off at school, help them to consider how they can independently problem-solve at school. Remind them that the discomfort of forgetfulness (and sometimes subsequent consequences) can encourage them to stay organised at home, prompt them to seek the assistance of an appropriate staff member, and help them to place reminders on their phones.

Looking for some advice on helping your child get organised? Dr Judith Locke offers insights into dropping the drop off routine, providing some ‘top tips’ to help your child become better organised.

Redlands Suspected Concussion Protocols

As we enter the Winter Season, it is timely to remind all members of the community about Redlands Concussion Protocol. We take any head knock extremely seriously. If a student does experience a head knock at any time, during a school-sponsored activity or an activity outside of school, they are asked to see a doctor for a medical examination immediately following the head knock. Redlands requests a confirmation from the medical examiner as to whether a concussion is confirmed. If a student is diagnosed with a concussion, further information will be shared with the student and parents to follow the Redlands Concussion Management Process. This process is in place to support a safe recovery and return to school for the student and to minimise long-term impacts of the concussion. If there are any further questions about this process, please direct questions to Mr Jonathan Gray, Dean of Activities.

Student News

Yumeto Lee

Recently, Yumeto, participated in the NSW Senior League State Baseball Championships as a part of the Ryde Hawks Black Baseball team. This team is comprised of all-stars from the Ryde Hawks Senior league division, and we are thrilled to announce that Yumeto made the team for the second year in a row.

Despite tough competition, the Ryde Hawks Black team made it to the semi-final playoffs and ended up finishing third overall. Yumeto played an instrumental role in the team’s success, contributing to his team’s batting performance throughout the tournament. We are incredibly proud of his hard work and commitment to achieving such an outstanding result.

As Yumeto continues to pursue his passion for baseball, we are excited to see him compete in the upcoming Down Under Classic held in the Gold Coast. This tournament presents him with an opportunity to showcase his skills and potentially be selected to tour the USA.

We applaud Yumeto for his dedication to his sport and his outstanding achievements, and we wish him the best of luck in all of his future endeavors. We look forward to seeing our students continue to excel in their passions and achieve great success.

Imogen Jeffrey-Bilich

Imogen has been awarded the Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy ‘Student of the Month’ award for May in the years 9-10 category. Imogen received this prestigious award due to her outstanding participation in the Alana Haines Awards, a major ballet competition held every two years in Wellington, New Zealand. For the competition, Imogen performed the ‘Lilac Fairy’ variation from the Sleeping Beauty ballet and a contemporary solo in front of a packed theatre and panel of judges. Her performances were impressive, and she showcased her exceptional talent and dedication to the art of ballet.

In addition to her competition performance, Imogen demonstrated incredible dedication to her training by attending several long days of ballet workshops in the second week of the holidays. Her commitment to her craft is truly inspiring, and we are proud to have her represent our school in the world of dance.

We would like to congratulate Imogen on her well-deserved award and commend her for her hard work and passion for ballet. We are excited to see where her talent and dedication take her in the future and look forward to seeing her continue to excel in the world of dance.

Sophie Yu

We are thrilled to announce that Sophie has won the North Sydney local final round of the Plain English-Speaking Award held on 28th April at Northern Beaches Secondary School. This is a prestigious public speaking competition organised by The Arts Unit of the NSW Department of Education, and we are extremely proud of Sophie for her exceptional performance.

Sophie represented Redlands at the competition and delivered an outstanding speech, impressing the judges and the audience with her eloquence and confident stage presence. Her remarkable achievement has qualified her to compete in the upcoming regional finals, which are scheduled for May.

We would like to extend our warmest congratulations to Sophie for her well-deserved win and commend her for her hard work and dedication in preparing for this competition. We would also like to express our appreciation to the coaches and teachers who provided unwavering support throughout the journey. Without their guidance and encouragement, Sophie’s success would not have been possible.

Once again, congratulations to Sophie on this remarkable achievement, and we wish her all the best in the upcoming regional finals.

Arnhem Land Update

This week, Yr 9 were involved with two online sessions where they interacted with the Yolngu community and culture College in preparation for Arnhem Land in Week 6. Students were introduced to Yolngu language, signs and cultural norms, and the concept of reciprocal learning.

Please read through the pre-learning information (which includes a packing list) available on our Yr 9 Pulse news Feed, and remember to compete the medical forms.

Camp Details

Our Camp is hosted at the Gulkula site, a significant Gumatj ceremonial site widely accepted by all clans as a meeting place. Since 1999 Gulkula has been used as the site for the annual Garma Festival and significant investment in facilities, meeting rooms, training spaces, catering, dining and accommodation has taken place. The site is a short drive from Gove airport and the regional hub of Nhulunbuy.

Students are provided with tents and camp beds and have access to permanent sanitation blocks. All meals are made on-site by local caterers in the industrial kitchen. Students will have access to the air-conditioned Knowledge Centre for some sessions. Other learning opportunities take place across the Gulkula site and through off-site excursions to sites of local cultural importance, including the highly regarded Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Arts Centre in nearby Yirrkala. Average daytime temperatures in Nhulunbuy in early June reach 29°C falling to 23°C at night, with a low chance of precipitation.

Students must arrive to school on Sunday 28th May at 5am sharp. They will be transported via bus to Sydney Airport where the cohort will fly to Gove via Cairns. Once students arrive at Gove Airport, they will be bussed to the Gulkula site.

Students will return to Sydney Airport via two separate flight times on Friday 2nd June in the evening. Dependant on airline scheduling, these arrival times will be confirmed shortly.

In Your Skin

Over the next two weeks Yr 8 students will be taking part in the In Your Skin program created by Dr Tessa Opie. This program is designed to promote positive language and culture around sexuality and encourage positive, healthy relationships.

The website for the external provider is available here if you are interested – https://www.inyourskin.co/.

During Tutor Time there will be a number of lead-in sessions which challenge students’ perceptions of the language they use to describe sexuality and relationships. There will then be a half-day workshop on Thursday 11th May led by In Your Skin.

Both Martia Jansens (Dean of Students) and our Yr 8 Tutors have discussed with students the need to approach these sessions with an open mind and an open heart. We have also reinforced that it is okay for students to feel uncomfortable with some of the content presented and that there is support available if needed.

The focus of our Yr 8 program lead in sessions is to break down stereotypes as they relate to relationship expectations, gender and sexuality with a specific focus on language and terminology.

Our three lead-in activities (as described by In Your Skin) are:

  • Spot the difference – The aim of this activity is encourage students to realise the negative impact of rigid gender stereotypes and their assumed corresponding behaviours.
  • Words – The purpose of this activity is to help students to describe how self esteem, intimate relationships and social safety and equality are affected by gender stereotypes. We are specifically concerned with the effect of derogatory names because of presumed sexual activity or inactivity.
  • Names – Students will explore ethical concepts of discrimination based on sexuality and discuss the meanings of homophobia and transphobia. This activity will also be an opportunity to consider possible differences of opinion about sexuality and respecting difference and diversity in individuals and communities.

You are highly encouraged to ask your student/s about these sessions and what they are taking away from them.

Upcoming Events

We have a a number of significant events during the term which include:

  • Week 3 – Thursday 11 May – In Your Skin
  • Week 4 – 5 – Coaching Conversations
  • Week 7 – Thursday 8 June – Athletics Carnival

Year 7

Week 2 – Pressing our Noses back to the Grindstone.

Week 2 has been a whirlwind of activity at Redlands for Yr 7. Winter sport has begun with gusto, with many energetic performances in sport on the weekend; students preparing for Gala Arts auditions; and the cohort getting into preparing for and completing a range of assessments in their languages. This week we had assessments in Chinese, Japanese and Latin; next week there are assessments in French, Spanish and Science. While we have only been on campus for a little over a week, for many it feels like the holidays are in the long distant past!

A quick reminder that the dates and details of subject assessments can all be found through the ‘assessments’ tab on the Year 7 Core Page on iLearn. I encourage parents to familiarise themselves with this page, so students can be encouraged to plan ahead for any pressure points in the term. This is certainly something we have been reaffirming in Tutor academic care sessions.

Additionally, we have already had a few students experience concussion in our Winter Sport season, so please make sure you are familiar with the protocols in place for caring for students after a concussion incident. The school’s concussion guidelines document can be found on the Senior School Sport page on Pulse.

Even with the busy start to Term 2, students are still finding innovative ways of having fun and bonding. A few of our girls decided to become very literally connected by tying their shoelaces together at recess. Luckily, their Year Advisor is adept at using tweezers and nails to pull apart complicated knots – even though that was never part of the job description!!

Meanwhile, a few students did some wonderful work in supporting the Platinum Ladies lunch on Wednesday. This lunch celebrates our Redlands alumni, giving them a chance to visit the school and reminiscence on their past experiences as students. Thank you to Ina Guan and Grace Walker-Barker who offered a wonderful musical performance during the lunch, entertaining the ladies and adding a wonderful tone to the event.

A big thank you must also be extended to Lauren Rolfe and Laura Huang who both shared with the cohort their experiences of high-level sporting competitions over the holidays, offering presentations on their respective events during our Year Assembly. Congratulations to Lauren who represented the Junior Australian Softball team in New Zealand, winning the ‘Easter Classic’ competition; and congratulations to Laura who competed at the National Championships of Synchronised Swimming in Perth, her team coming third for their team routine at event!

This week also saw students complete an important social and emotional wellbeing survey, conducted by ACER. This survey allows us to gain a comprehensive review of student wellbeing, to help us plan targeted support for Year groups, to ensure we can help students remain happy, healthy and successful. The survey was anonymous but allows us to see trends across Year groups in the school.

Finally, I want to remind everyone of the wonderful collection of co-curricular lunchtime clubs we have within the school. This week, I visited the Esports club, where students were involved in a tightly contested competition in Mario Kart. Such competitions are preparing Year 7 and 8 students to partake in the FUSE Cup, an international Esports competition that is focused on providing young students with an opportunity to participate in safe, inclusive, supportive and structured school-based Esports competition, while developing positive gaming behaviours and furthering their digital wellbeing. Year 7 and 8 students will compete in the Fuse Cup in June at St Lukes Grammar, Dee Why.

Key Dates and Upcoming Events:

  • Week 3: Year 7 and 8 Respectful Relationships Presentation (Period 5, Thursday 11/5)

See below for more information.

  • Week 5: Vaccination Catch Ups (Wednesday 24/5)

An opportunity for students who missed Term 1 vaccinations to be vaccinated. Further information will be forthcoming.

  • Week 7: School Athletics Carnival (Thursday 8/6)

A fun day where students will connect in House groups and compete in a variety of track and field events.

IMPORTANT NOTICES:

Yr 7 and 8 Respectful Relationships Presentation – Thursday 11 May:

Redlands has been updating our PDHPE and student wellbeing, relationships and sexuality curriculum, and to support our school curriculum all students will be involved in a series of workshops and presentations on the topic of respectful relationships.

Presentations will be delivered by the team at In Your Skin.

The content is designed to support young people to develop healthy and positive relationship skills. Students will be encouraged to actively consider their relationship values and expectations, and to develop a healthy and realistic sense of self and ‘other’.

Presentations are sex positive, evidence-based, with an awareness of all genders and sexual identities with a focus on harm reduction. In Your Skin’s approach is refreshing and informative, fun and realistic.

Our pastoral team has identified some resources for parents that might be useful in understanding some of these issues and engaging in discussions with your child.

Live from Yr 6 Camp in Canberra

There is something serenely uplifting about driving out of Sydney as the sun rises and I enjoyed this experience as I drove down to Canberra yesterday morning to spend time with Yr 6 and the teachers on camp this week. As always, I have really enjoyed the many opportunities to sit and enjoy a conversation over a meal or on an activity with students, which are always a highlight for me on each Junior School camp. It is these types of moments where, as teachers, we find out a little more about each child and often vice versa too.

There is a uniqueness about this particular trip where our Yr 6 students are engaged in rich learning experiences in both civics and outdoor education such as the high-ropes course, camping, canoeing, hiking and mountain biking, interspersed with curriculum-related learning experiences at The CSIRO Discovery Centre, The Australian War Memorial, Parliament House, The Museum of Australian Democracy and the National Gallery of Australia, where my day started yesterday with three of the groups. They have also enjoyed evening activities with this evening’s activity being a private session at Questacon, the interactive National Science and Technology Centre which is always an absolute student highlight.

So close after ANZAC Day, the visit to the Australian War Memorial had greater significance and impact to many of the students and I loved seeing the sheer awe of the students as they saw the original David Hockney painting of A Bigger Grand Canyon, which they have studied in Visual Arts this year. Jackson Pollock’s famous 70-year-old abstract work, Blue Poles, which the National Gallery Of Australia purchased for $1.4m and is now worth a staggering $153m w2as another highlight.

One of the things that has made me particularly proud has been observing how the students have been looking after one another and I have seen a how polite, engaged and respectful the group have been as they have moved around Canberra.

To assist in meeting the cost of part of our week in the nation’s capital, the Australian Government generously contributes funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs, which is duly acknowledged and paid directly to the School upon completion of the excursion. This has supported the opportunity for our students to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education.

We have posted some pictures of the trip so far on the Yr 6 page on Pulse for you to enjoy and get a feel of the trip so far and I look forward to joining families welcome the group back at approximately 4pm on Friday afternoon. I know you will also join me in thanking the marvellous team of teachers here caring for the group in loco parentis. It is a huge responsibility, but the meticulous planning of Mrs Robinson, Mr Atkins, Ms Proctor and the team has helped with the smooth organisation of the week yet again, for which I and the students are immensely grateful.

Student Medications on Yr 4 Camp

We are looking forward to Yr 4 heading down to the Southern Highlands next week and a reminder that if your child/ren requires medication (Prescribed or OTC) on camp, you will need to complete a Medical Authority Form located on Pulse HERE.

This form will need to be returned to Mr Atkins ASAP. Students should not be arriving to camp without a completed MAF if they require medication.

Please contact our Head of Outdoor Education, Mr Atkins, for any other questions via email.

Yr 6 Healthy Relationships Workshops

Next week, our Yr 6 teachers, PDHPE staff and school counsellors will help external providers, In Your Skin, to lead and facilitate Healthy Relationships workshops. Our Redlands staff have undertaken training ahead of time to enhance their skillset and know the students best.

As was the case across Yrs 6-12 last year, these half day workshops and presentations for students will be age appropriate and tailored specifically for each year group in line with our relationships, consent and sexuality education curriculum.

As a School, we are committed to ensuring our students continue to receive appropriate education on these essential topics in line with our School Vision to inspire our students to achieve life-readiness.

Staffing News

Sadly, we will be saying goodbye to Dean of Teaching and Learning, Mrs Stacey Smith on Friday May 19. Stacey will be taking up a role with the NSW Department of Education as a Curriculum Leader in the Northern suburbs zone of Sydney. Stacey will be working across many schools to help staff and train schools in the new NSW Curriculum reform.

Even though we are sad to see her leave Redlands, we wish her all the best in her new role.

A Message from OOSH

Our team has already started planning the Winter Vacation Care! The mid-year holidays run for three weeks, and we would like to invite you to send us some suggestions about activities, incursions and/or excursions. If you have any ideas to share, please email us or catch one of the team in the playground.

Some friendly reminders:

  • Please update your account with your preferred payment method or email anogueira@redlands.nsw.edu.au if you require assistance. OOSH payment are now only handled by the K-6 OOSH Coordinator.
  • Children must be picked-up by 6pm and parents are responsible for supervising their children after they have been signed out. WE ask you to leave the school grounds after you have signed your child out. Please catch up with other parents outside the school grounds please.

Upcoming Events

Mother’s Day

We look forward to welcoming you to our Junior Campus Mother’s Day coffee and conversation morning on May 15. Please join us in the Piazza from 7.45am for a coffee, time to catch up with friends then spend some quality time in your child’s classroom. Bookings are essential so please click on the link found on the flyer.

K-6 Parent Cybersafety Workshop

Please join us on Thursday May 11 to discuss the importance of cybersafety with our elearning Coordinator, Mrs Argiro Anaganostu. As we know the digital space moves quickly and it is important for us as adult to know how to help our young learners navigate the digital space that they will grow to experience every day. Places are limited, so please ensure you book a spot via the link found in the flyer.

Preparatory Campus Playgrounds

At Redlands we are so very fortunate to have beautiful playgrounds and equipment for our students to play on. Our students can play on the Piazza equipment from 8am in the mornings and at times during the day when the play area is supervised. As cooler mornings start to creep in and the sun doesn’t quite reach our playground in the mornings, occasionally the equipment will be closed due to damp sand or wet climbing frames. The teacher on duty at the time will make this judgment call.

In the afternoons, can I please ask parents to keep your child with you or very near to you after they have been picked up. No child is to be swinging from the trees or disrupting classes that are still running.  Playing on the equipment is only permitted for students who are booked in to OOSH. Thank you for helping us with this.

Redlands House and Transition Gold

Healthy Eating Week

We strongly advocate for healthy eating at Redlands House. The students are always encouraged to eat healthy foods, or everyday foods as we call them, first before any sweet treats. Preschool children need to eat foods from all five healthy food groups – vegetables, fruit, grain foods, dairy and protein. Healthy foods have nutrients that are important for growth, development and learning. In Week 4, all of Redlands House will focus on healthy eating and exercise.

Mother’s Day

To celebrate Mother’s Day we would love all of the important ladies in the children lives to join us in the preschool from 9am to 9.30am on Monday 15 May. We invite you in to join in activities and music lessons with the children and teachers.

Parking

Parking around the school can be problematic, especially around pick up time. To ease congestion and ensure the safety of our students, the Prep school use a carline that enable parents to collect their children from the underground carpark from 2.45pm each day. We therefore ask Redlands House families to refrain from parking in the 5 minutes parking zone outside the preschool from 2.45pm onwards. Families are still able to park for 5 minutes out the front of Redlands House between 2.30pm – 2.45pm. Cones will be placed on the road at 2.45pm, not before, in order to prepare for the Prep Car Line.

Secondary Sport

It was great to see the start of the Winter Season take off last weekend, despite some inclement weather there was a lot of sport on over the weekend.

Parents & Carers last week received an email containing the Redlands Concussion Protocols, which can also be found on the ‘Key Documents’ section of Redlands Pulse – Secondary School Sport. A reminder to all that these protocols are for both a return to school and a return to sport. Students who have a suspected concussion are asked to seek medical attention at their earliest convenience.

Over the next few weeks we will be sharing a number of articles surrounding all things sport and we will hear from some key personnel within the Redlands Sporting community about what they see as the benefits of sport.

Football

It was a fantastic Round 1 for Redlands Football. Despite the wet weather all games went ahead as planned, with some fantastic results for our Redlands teams. With an almost clean sweep in the boys, we finished with one draw, with all other teams winning in Round 1! The Girls also had a fantastic start to Round 1, only losing one game out of the five fixtures. With a great start to the season, we are looking forward to seeing our teams in action this Saturday at Macquarie University fields this weekend. A reminder that the fixture details are available on the Redlands Pulse – Weekly Fixture tab.

Congratulations to the following students who were selected into the ISA Open Girls Football team: Jasmine Black, Madison Barwise, Arkie Riches and Zoe Twining (shadow player). A further congratulations to Keian Murphy and Hugo McKay who were selected into the Open Boys team, and Liam McFarlane and Jaiden Murphy for selection into the 16&U Boys squad.

A huge congratulations to Jasmine Black who was a member of the Sydney FC Women’s team for the 2023 Season. The team won the A League Grand Final on Sunday in front of a record breaking crowd. Congratulations Jasmine!

Hockey

It was a fantastic Round 1 for Redlands Hockey! A big thank you to the Friends of Hockey for putting on a morning tea for the entire Hockey community, a great initiative to start the season!

The First XI hockey team took the field early on Saturday morning, braving the heavy rain, for their first game of the season against Central Coast Grammar School, one of our key rivals from the 2022 season. The girls played well from the outset, especially as many of them have not played together before and we all know that it takes a while to get used to the way that everyone plays and to work out how to successfully play together as a team. The girls did really well with many moments of beautiful teamwork to get the ball up the field. Our defence also held strong with some lovely tackles from Serafina Scotting and gorgeous saves from Megan Kirkpatrick in goals. The game ended with a 4-2 scoreline to us after three stunning goals from Jess Van Extel and one impressive goal from Lexi Jones. Jess was named player’s player. It’s looking promising for the season ahead!

The Junior Girls team had a fantastic start to the season on Saturday! With many of the team still learning the ropes they put on a fantastic team performance. The team played against Central Coast Grammar School and for the first half it appeared the teams were very evenly matched. The Redlands Juniors came out very strong in the second half and dominated the game, finishing with a 6-1 win, with a second half performance that showed this team is going to be a force to be reckoned with for the season. A special mention to Sahara Nicholas who scored a massive 5 goals in the game and could not be stopped by the Central Coast defence.

We look forward to seeing our teams in action this Saturday at Barker College. A reminder that the weekly fixtures are available on the Redlands Pulse – Weekly Fixture tab.

A huge congratulations to the following students who have been selected into the 2023 ISA Hockey team: Eloise Trueman (Open Girls), Jessica Van Extel (Open Girls), Heidi de Saxe (16&U Girls), Iona Gait (16&U Girls) and Megan Kirkpatrick (16&U Girls). Wishing them all the best of luck in the NSWCIS Championship!

Tennis

Despite the wet weather over the weekend, we had a great start to the Winter Tennis season! Development Squad players and the NSS teams were able to compete at home and away for the first time, as well as the ISA players against St Andrew’s Cathedral College. Hopefully this week the sun will be out and everyone can be on the court.

A quick reminder that wet weather calls are made at 5:45am for Tuesday and Thursday morning sessions and 6:45am/8:45am for the Saturday morning 8am/10am sessions respectively. If you do not receive an email or notification then, please assume training/matches are still on. We will reach out if we have to cancel last minute due to any sudden downpour and scores will be reflected in the draw as partial play. All home venues have covered areas for the players to wait under in case the weather clears up.

Good luck for Round 2!

Round 1 Representative Sport

In very wet conditions we commenced our Winter Sport Fixtures for 2023. The majority of our fixtures were able to go ahead despite the weather and in Football we won 5 out of their 7 matches played at home. Well done to those students who played in their first representative team on Saturday. Special mention to two Year 4 students in particular who stayed behind after their 4A Football match and played for the 5A team who were short players due to sickness. Well done Hunter and Armaan.  Similarly to Jonas in Year 6 who arrived a game earlier to help the team who were playing before his match.

Both our Year 5&6 Hockey teams recorded a win and represented Redlands in both commitment and sportsmanship. Students who were nominated by their coaches across all Winter Sports as ‘best on ground’ will receive their certificates at our next assembly. Some reminders for both families and students;

  • If your child is sick night before or morning of please complete the online absence form through Pulse so their coach is aware of it and can make modifications.
  • Please be in correct playing kit and at the venue 30min prior to kick off time
  • Please allow time for travel and parking as Saturday morning traffic for both club and school sport has been compared to midweek peak hour traffic.
  • Let’s continue to create a culture of thanks, students to individually thank their coaches before their departure after the post-game huddle.

Ballet and Dance

Academy Update

It was wonderful to have so many of our Prep and Junior Students turning up to school this week, fully equipped to have their hair done for class, and teachers were thrilled to hand out stickers. Reminder to parents, please pack a hair kit for dance: no hair kit no sticker!

Senior ballet dancers had their Mock RAD exams on Sunday which went smoothly. Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy teachers Kate Larter and Samantha Simpson (who is an RAD examiner) where thrilled with the standard of the students work and just want them to present themselves with confidence by showing their love of dance through every movement.

Redlands Ballet and Dance are thrilled to welcome Georgia Tindall to the Academy.

Georgia grew up and trained on the Northern beaches of Sydney. Starting at the age of 4, she developed a strong passion for all things Dance.

After completing high school at Brigidine College, St Ives where she was awarded Dance Captain in Year 12, Georgia studied Full Time Dance at Brent Street in 2021 receiving a Diploma in Performing Arts.

From there, Georgia completed an online mentorship throughout Covid lockdown with AAFTA Dance International, Los Angeles. Learning from some of LA’s top performers and choreographers was a truly inspirational contribution to her dance journey.

In early 2022, Georgia joined The Dream Dance Company’s Show Business program led by renowned choreographer Marko Panzic.  As well as being given the opportunity to showcase her choreography on stage, this program further developed Georgia’s strong interest for creating her own work.

In August of 2022 she moved to New York City to train in Broadway Dance Centre’s Professional Semester program. Georgia gained knowledge and inspiration from a variety of leading New York choreographers.

Georgia looks forward to sharing her passion with our wonderful students.

Juliet Whelan (Year 8)

Juliet Whelan has been a focused and determined student in all her classes and private lessons. Over the April holidays, Juliet attended the Australian Ballet School’s ‘Intestate Training Program’.

Juliet about the experience: “I had such an incredible time down in Melbourne! I learnt so much information from the lovely teachers that I can then take into my everyday classes.”

Juliet also competed her classical solo choreographed by Mrs Revie at the IRBD dance competition! Juliet placed 3rd, which is an incredible achievement for her first solo in pointe shoes!

Congratulations Juliet!

Years 9-10

Imogen Jeffery-Bilich (Year 10)
Imogen Jeffery-Bilich (Year 10)

During the April holidays, Imogen flew to Wellington, New Zealand and competed in the prestigious Alana Haines Awards. For the competition, Imogen performed the ‘Lilac Fairy’ variation from Sleeping Beauty, coached by Mrs Revie and a contemporary solo choreographed by Ms Jennifer.

Imogen found that, “The Alanah Haines Awards were an amazing experience where I was immersed with incredible, talented dancers from New Zealand and Australia. I’ve learnt a lot from this competition and am looking forward to applying this to my current dance training at Redlands.”

In addition to her overseas experience, Imogen attended the Redlands RAD Advanced 2 workshop in the second week of the holidays. Imogen’s commitment to her training is very commendable, and she consistently proves herself to be a wonderful role model in the academy.

Congratulations Imogen!

Drama and Theatre

What a wonderful and fun filled week we have had in Drama of Week 2 of this term! We celebrated our Yr 10 Drama Curriculum performers with their engaging and theatrical performances of Shakespeare, Yr 8 attended Sydney Theatre Company to see the Fantastic Mr Fox as well. Our Extra Subject Drama classes are now starting to develop their performances for our end of year Extra Subject Drama Showcases which we hope you can join us for later in the year. Please come along to our Yr 12 IB Performance evening (taking place in Week 3), they have worked so hard and created thoughtful and innovative performances, we would love to see you there.

Yr 10 Shakespeare Performance Evening

A massive congratulations to our amazing Yr 10 Drama Curriculum theatremakers who performed last Thursday and Friday in the Drama Studio to full houses, a big thank you to all our parents and audience members who came along to support, as well as to the Yr 10 Drama teachers, Stacey Whitmore and Sam Novis who have done great work on the performances and the showcase.

“I believe that the recently past Yr 10 Drama performance night was as incredibly entertaining for its audience members as it was for its performers. As a fellow performer it was a deeply joyful and exhilarating night that brought us experiences to remember into our adulthood as both laughable and educational. I know that I myself will most definitely remember the feeling of lights on my face for years to come and I hope that my peers can know this same joy in a memorable night we all shared.” – Tali Feldman

“The Shakespeare performance evening was a great night to practice our performance skills with our friends and share our Elizabethan experiments and work with the audience. The audience saw a variety of excerpts from plays, ranging from Romeo and Juliet, to The Tempest and Othello. I was encouraged to step out of my comfort zone using Shakespearean techniques like strong annunciation and big movements to interact with the audience. We were proud to share our practice and hope everyone enjoyed the evening!” – Remie Gibbs

Yr 8 Drama Curriculum Excursion – The Fantastic Mr Fox!

In Week 1, our Yr 8 Drama Curriculum classes attended a performance of the Fantastic Mr Fox at the Sydney Theatre Company. The performance had live projection with a revolving stage and it was a wonderful introduction to theatre for our Yr 8 Drama students.

Yr 12 IB Curriculum Performance Evening

Yr 12 IB Theatre present the Collaborative Project Examination on Monday May 8, 6:30pm to 7:40pm at the Drama Studio.

The students perform group-devised work using techniques from theatre company Complicite. This year the students have focussed on the lives of three women: Frida Kahlo, Helen Keller and Gypsy Rose.

We warmly invite you to attend the performance and participate in the stimulating Q and A discussion afterwards. Audience feedback is an important part of their assessment and the students welcome all feedback.
