Issue 12 2021 - 29 Apr 2021

From The Principal

Whilst out on my early morning ride today in the magnificent Ku-ring-gai National Park with the sun rising and the full moon setting, I reflected on how very fortunate we are to be living in Australia and how much we have to be thankful for. Growing concerns around the crisis in India sends a strong reminder of the reality of what people are dealing with in other parts of the globe.

I felt inspired to share a passage by Bishop Ken Untener, which I had shared with my Executive team at our fortnightly Executive Committee meeting earlier this week.  It is so relevant at present, irrespective of your personal beliefs or faith, and in particular in a school environment where we nurture and grow young people who are our future.  We inspire them to do their best, be their best and make a difference, no matter how big or small. I hope that this passage resonates with you as it did with our team:

“It helps, now and then, to step back and take a long view.

The kingdom is not only beyond our efforts, it is even beyond our vision.

We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction

of the magnificent enterprise that is God’s work.

Nothing we do is complete, which is a way of

saying that the Kingdom always lies beyond us.

Not statement says all that could be said.

No prayer fully expresses our faith.

No confession brings perfection.

No pastoral visit brings wholeness.

No program accomplishes the Church’s mission.

No set of goals and objectives includes everything.

This is what we are about.  We plant the seeds that one day will grow.

We water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise.

We lay foundations that will need further development.

We provide yeast that produces far beyond our capabilities.

We cannot do everything, and there is a sense of liberation in realising that.

This enables us to do something, and to do it very well.

It may be incomplete, but it is a beginning, a step along the way,

an opportunity for the Lord’s grace to enter and do the rest.

We may never see the end results, but that is the difference

 between master builder and worker.

We are workers, not master builders; ministers not messiahs.

We are prophets of a future not our own.”

Within the School community this week, it was wonderful to be able to welcome Yr 7 Parents and Carers to mix socially on the Fahl Garden and to have the opportunity to meet a number of staff members.

I was pleased to note so many people talking about how involved their child had become in the full life of the School and making the most of new opportunities. A common thread of discussion was the focus on developing new friendships and the importance of feeling connected.

Restrictions on our Performing Arts program have now been removed which means that we can look forward to the Senior Music Festival at The Concourse Chatswood on Friday 28 May. I was so impressed by the exceptional quality of the performances in the Junior Piano Competition held last Friday evening and have no doubt that the Senior Piano Competition this Friday will also be a wonderful event.

We look forward to the first round of Winter Sport commencing this weekend and I know that many of our students are looking forward to representing the School with pride.

So, as we have reached a period during which our full cocurricular program can run, let us stop and give thanks for the many blessings we share and be ever mindful of our global connection to those less fortunate than ourselves.

This is Redlands

It was lovely to welcome our Yr 7 parents and carers back to the Secondary School on Tuesday evening for the first of our campus events of the year.  This ‘Meet and Greet’ enabled our Yr 7 parents and carers to meet our Teachers, Tutors, Year Advisors and School Leadership Team, establishing those connections that we see as so important in developing a productive partnership between home and school.  As the Redlands Learning Hub was in active use by our teachers and students on Tuesday afternoon, we were unfortunately not able to host tours of the building within the event.  We look forward to welcoming parents on tours of the Learning Hub as the year unfolds, and in the interim, invite those that are interested to view our virtual tour of the hub that was developed last year here.

As we continue to develop further community engagement opportunities on campus we encourage a continued connection to the significant and diverse experience of our class and year group parents, the RPFA and Friends of Groups that support our many and varied community activities and events.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Head of Secondary School

Sunday morning saw an early start for me this week, as I headed to George’s Heights for the ANZAC Dawn Service. Meeting me were Mr Webber, Mr Corcoran and three of our Student Leaders, Laura Sidoti, Julia Parker and Harrison Winton. We were privileged with a beautiful sunrise to accompany this special occasion which featured a strong focus on Indigenous contributions to Defence operations. One of the speeches was particularly poignant and offered both personal and collective insights on Indigenous experiences of war. The ceremony was strongly represented and quite different to how we celebrated ANZAC Day last year, making it all the more commemorative.

We enjoyed a wonderful afternoon with Yr 7 parents and teachers at the Meet and Greet on Tuesday. Utilising the beautiful Fahl Garden, it was great to be able to mingle and chat with parents about their children. It was also helpful to hear feedback on the recent Study Skills talk and the ways we can support Yr 7 during assessment periods. We look forward to some deeper conversations at the Parent Teacher Night in early Term 3.

As the Redlands Learning Hub was in active use by our teachers and students on Tuesday afternoon we are unfortunately not able to host tours of the facility within the event.  We look forward to welcoming parents on tours of the Learning Hub as the year unfolds, but in the interim invite you to view our virtual tour of the hub here.

As part of this evening, we offered Yr 7 parents the opportunity to engage in Parent ICT Information Sessions. These are designed to support parents to navigate iLearn, manage eSafety requirements on their child’s laptop and offer some tips for avoiding online distractions at home and school. Please register your interest using this link.

It was lovely to welcome Yr 12 back to school this week after an intense period of examinations. The Yr 12 Student Leadership Team met on Wednesday to explore their roles thus far and to discuss feedback from a recent Prefect Survey. Ever empathetic and generous, they explored ways to support each other, the Yr 12 Prefect body, and the Redlands community. 2021 sees an evolved Student Prefect system take shape, and one that enables a great many more students to be able to call themselves a ‘Prefect’. This term, our large Prefect body will have the opportunity to explore the practices of leadership more deeply by engaging with others’ perspectives of leadership and through some specifically designed leadership experiences. Ms Jansons and I so enjoy our time reflecting and guiding Yr 12 leaders. Despite their youth, they are wisely able to discern the dispositions of authentic leaders as being of service to others, as growing others and as positively influencing culture. Our future is in safe hands!

This term the Redlands staff have been focusing on how best to support students with ADHD. As you would be aware, our students diagnosed with ADHD benefit from a range of adjustments, and these vary depending on the student and often, the subject area. In conjunction with our Learning Plus Department, the counsellors and the Pastoral Team, we are currently exploring the common learning challenges faced by students with ADHD and also the executive skills challenges they face such as organisation, getting started, completing and returning assignments and working memory. As part of our collaborative practices we will be connecting with parents of students who manage ADHD over the coming term in order to review the effectiveness of these practices. As always, we value your feedback and welcome any comments on how your child is travelling in terms of their executive skills development.

This weekend we commence the Winter Sports Season. I am looking forward to heading out to Macquarie University to watch a few games and enjoy a coffee with staff and parents, who are up early and enjoying the crisp air. Although there are a few injured students currently filling up the lifts at school, we anticipate a strong season across a range of sports. We wish all students well this weekend, and to those nursing sprains, bruises and fractures, a speedy recovery.

Are you a parent of a Yrs 11 and 12 student who is learning to drive or thinking about it? Lane Cove Council and Hunter’s Hill Council (in conjunction with Hornsby Shire Council) will be hosting an online (Zoom) Graduated Licensing Scheme Workshop for parents/carers and supervisors of Leaner Drivers. The session will offer practical advice about:

  • current driving rules and requirements for L and P platers
  • how learners benefit from supervised on-road driving
  • how you can help make learning to drive a safe and positive experience

Chaplain

‘Pay it Forward Day’ was on Wednesday this week. A day to celebrate kindness, a day to look to ways to show grace towards others in practical ways, a day to cause a ripple of kindness. Thankfully this is a deep value in our Redlands community showing love and kindness each and every day. Our students are continually encouraged to show kindness so no-one is on the outer. All are welcomed and valued as people.

This is a reflection of the biblical principles. All are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27-28) so that each and every individual is of infinite value. Jesus articulated the implication of this as he commands to love one another and even to love our enemies. What an extra ordinary thought; that we can have a real issue of conflict and disagreement with someone, and yet still show deep love and care for the other. Such love in disagreement is a cornerstone of Christian faith as it models the love of God in Jesus.

However, Jesus does not let us get away with easy words of love, he also told the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25ff) that cleverly illustrates that this sort of love is practical and costly. The Samaritan (the expected villain of the day) was the one to stop and render assistance to an injured man in a dangerous setting. He not only took time and effort in a place where he could easily become a victim but he also paid for accommodation and continuing treatment. This was not expected and demonstrated the sort of love that ‘Pay it Forward’ calls for.

In contexts of disagreement and conflict, there is always the opportunity to look for opportunities to show kindness. A kind word or an act of service or generosity can bring a spirit of healing and community to all our lives.

Finally, a reminder to mark in your diary on Thursday 13 May, 8-9.00pm, the Parent run prayer group in the David Armstrong Room at St Peter’s Church (with parking located on Waters Rd). Please contact Sally Swan at swanlsally@gmail.com for further information.

Year 12

Examinations

Examinations for both the IB and HSC programs wrapped up on Monday. Over the course of the next two weeks, our Yr 12 students will begin receiving results and feedback from their teachers. There will no doubt be mixed feelings for students during this period. Please do frame any conversations that you have with your child through a positive and encouraging lens. Please connect with your child’s Tutor, Mr Randall, Mr Taylor and myself if you have any concerns regarding their academic progress or wellbeing in relation to this recent examination period.

It was such a pleasure to connect with students during the recent break when many took advantage of the Study Centre to prepare for their exams. It was exciting to witness students working collaboratively on Maths problems, using the white board walls of the Learning Hub rooms to plan and problem solve.

Student Achievements

We wish Liam Dow the best of luck as he trials for ISA Football.

Siebren Elzinga has avidly pursued a strong interest in Golf and he recently participated in his first Junior Golf Tournament, the 41st Annual Muirfield Junior Open 2021. It was a stroke play event, meaning that the total amount of the player’s shots added up to their total score. He won a trophy and a cash prize of $150. Siebren is striving to achieve a zero handicap and judging by his recent success, he is well on his way to achieving his goal.

Emma Mahon achieved fantastic results in the recent Australian Track and Field Championships. Emma competed in the U20 (combined 18 and 19 years) 1500m heats and was pleased to come away with an equal PB and place 14th. Her main event, at the Championships was the U20 (combined 18 and 19 years) 5000m. She was very excited to place 4th overall in this event with a 64 second PB time of 17:39.

Year 11

There are a number of exciting events that are providing leadership opportunities for students in Yr 11 and it is wonderful to see so many of them step-up and be involved in these events. In particular, recent opportunities include:

  • Meeting and greeting all staff and students on gate duty last week and this Monday, due to Yr 12 being unavailable on an assessment block.
  • Assisting throughout the year at Matthew Talbot Shelter by serving breakfast on Mondays, with different students participating each week.
  • Chaperoning Alumni guests at Redlands Platinum Girls Luncheon that celebrates women who left Redlands 50+ years ago.
  • Two events involving the Junior School, assisting current and potential Redlands students and parents in tours of the Secondary School and speaking to parents.

Student Achievements

Congratulations to the following students for their success recently in the following areas:

  • Erik Scott on his selection for the NSW CIS Swimming Championships.
  • Ben Harrington on his sailing achievements in particular over the last school holidays, in which he won in the All School Teams division and competed in the Victorian Youth Championships.
  • The Yr 11 Mock Trial team, consisting of Louise Colin, Charlotte Harman, Sophia Maxwell, Sophie McMillan, Jack Murray and Callum Wardman-Browne, who had their second win of the year on Tuesday evening against North Sydney Boys School, with a strong performance in a criminal trial regarding fraud. In the next round they will be fighting a civil trial against Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College.

Pastoral Program

This term the Tutor Groups will spend time understanding a number of different topics, some of which have been suggested by the students themselves as areas they would like to know more about. The Pastoral Program’s overall area will be about healthy lifestyles, focusing on addiction of various substances such as vaping, drugs and alcohol, as well as addiction of technology and social media. The Social Awareness Program will continue to look at diversity, with a focus this term on the LGBTQIA community to develop a better understanding of this section of our community. Our Careers Advisor, Simone Salier, will continue to visit each Tutor Group this term, providing information on life after school, with an overall focus this term on ‘thinking globally’. In addition, there are a number of universities visiting the school this term, either face-to-face or virtually via Zoom, such as Notre Dame, UNSW, New York, Melbourne, UCL London and Macquarie. Please encourage your child to keep up-to-date with all relevant year information on our Pastoral iLearn page.

Have a great week!

Camp

It is exciting that it is finally time for Yr 8 Camp, based at Yarrahapini on the Mid-North Coast next week (Monday 3 May to Friday 7 May). There is a change to the original information regarding where students will be departing, so please note, we will now be departing from Alister Street, Cremorne (Redlands Junior School – Dunnet Hall). Students are to be dropped off at 6am. We ask that parents do not congregate on the pathways or entrance to allow for other parents to drop off and for staff to assemble students in a timely manner. We will be returning approximately 2.30pm to the Senior Campus Friday 7 May. Please note, parents will be sent an SMS on Friday confirming arrival time.

Food for Day 1

Students to bring lunch and snacks for Day 1 (no nut products).

Staying safe

Please pay close attention to the advice in the gear list as to what to bring, but these items are particularly important:

  • Broad brimmed sun-hat. Baseball caps do not offer adequate protection and should not be used
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Non-aerosol insect repellent and long-sleeved clothing
  • No jeans, singlets or short shorts. Clothes should be quick-drying and provide sun protection
  • Strong garbage bags for waterproofing gear

Medical Information

If your child requires medication (including anaphylaxis and asthma), it is imperative that staff sight all items prior to departure.

Further Locker Reminder – Student Personal Property and Valuables

Redlands has a supportive community and rich school environment. Part of maintaining this culture is continuing to uphold respect for our facilities and being responsible for personal belongings.

Students are reminded that ‘all personal property and valuables must be labelled and kept locked in school lockers’ (page 10 Student Planner). All students are required to have a lock on their locker by the end of Week 3, Friday 7 May. Students can arrange their own lock or purchase one from the Uniform Shop. To avoid the loss of keys, combination locks strongly are recommended. Thank you for your assistance.

Yr 7 Meet and Greet

It was wonderful to see Yr 7 parents and carers in person for the long-awaited Yr 7 Meet and Greet. We hope that this event provided you with a great opportunity to say hello to your child’s teachers, and to establish and affirm these important partnerships.

NAPLAN

On Tuesday 11 May, Wednesday 12 May and Thursday 13 May, students in Yr 7 in all Australian Government, Catholic and Independent Schools will sit the annual National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). The NAPLAN examinations are designed to assess reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. Following the tests, all parents across Australia will receive results in a common reporting format.

While all students in Yr 7 are expected to participate in NAPLAN testing it is important for you and your child to know that NAPLAN is not a pass/fail test. It simply looks at what level students are achieving in literacy and numeracy against National Standards and compared with student peers throughout Australia. More information is available on the NAP website.

Access to New Change Rooms

Our new student changing rooms are open this week. Staff will be communicating the rules and expectations when using this space.

The new boys changing room is located in the old IB office and the girls room can be found in the old Lost Property room in the Gym. Both rooms can be used in conjunction with the current bathrooms. Opening times for both are as follows:

7.45am – 8.15am
10.10am-10.30am
1.15pm-1.30pm

Reminders

Lockers

As mentioned last week, students are required to have a lock for their locker. This is to ensure that they can store their belongings safely whilst at school.

JUNIOR SCHOOL UPCOMING EVENTS

Reporting Live from Canberra!

I am currently enjoying a wonderful couple of days with Yr 6 on camp in sunny Canberra. Simple opportunities to sit and enjoy a conversation over a meal or on a hike with students are always a highlight for me as I spend time on each Junior School camp.

The students have been actively engaged in rich learning experiences in both civics and outdoor education such as the high-ropes course, camping, canoeing, hiking and mountain biking, interspersed with curriculum-related learning experiences at CSIRO, the Australian War Memorial, Parliament House, the Museum of Australian Democracy and the wonderful National Gallery of Australia.

One of the things that has made me particularly proud has been observing how the students have been looking after one another and consistent feedback I have received from various sources about how polite, engaged and respectful the group have been. One of the staff at Parliament House stopped our staff to specifically commend groups for their respectful behaviour and their intelligent questions and prior knowledge of the workings of Parliament.

To assist in meeting the cost of part of our week in the nation’s capital, the Australian Government generously contributes funding of $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs, which is duly acknowledged and paid directly to the School upon completion of the excursion. This has supported the opportunity for our students to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education.

We have posted a number of pictures of the trip so far on the Year 6 page on Redlands Pulse for you to enjoy and get a feel of the trip so far and I look forward to joining families welcome the group back on Friday afternoon. I know you will also join me in thanking the fabulous team of teachers here caring for the group. It is a huge responsibility but the meticulous planning of Mrs Robinson and her team has helped with the smooth organisation of the week.

Junior Piano Competition

Last Friday afternoon, Mr Webber and I were thrilled to be part of the audience at this year’s annual Junior Piano Competition. The quality of performance from every child was exceptional and our guest judge, Dr Kirill Monorosi, also noted the high overall level of performance.

It truly was a memorable afternoon in the Edwards Auditorium within the Music Centre on the Senior Campus and I extend my congratulations to all of the students involved and the overall winner, Andy Guan.

Welcome to Redlands Courtney Evans

This week our new OOSH Coordinator began. Courtney comes to Redlands with ten year’s experience in the OOSH Catholic System and with a very extensive knowledge of policy and procedure under the ASEQUA framework (Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority).  Courtney will lead the team through the OOSH registration process next year and in the meantime will spend time reviewing our OOSH facility. As a result of this review, we need to stop the process of taking students who have not been picked up at car line to OOSH. This process actually places our OOSH facility out of staff to student ratio and can jeopardise our registration with ASEQUA. Therefore, if you are late picking up your child in the afternoon, the class teacher will call you to ensure all is okay and will take them and wait with them in the Prep Reception area until you arrive.

Kindergarten Information Sessions

I have enjoyed meeting and having conversations with current TG and Redlands House Senior parents over the last two weeks. Next Tuesday I will be meeting our 2023, 2024 and 2025 Kindergarten families. This is a time for us to start making connections with future families and share information around where we are heading with Redlands Preparatory School. I strongly encourage you to pass on this information to any families who may be considering Redlands for Kindergarten.

Term 2 Wellbeing

As part of our Wellbeing program Term 2 we are working with the provider ySafe. In class Circle Time this week students will be discussing how we stay safe on the internet. Our focus will be to identify people and demonstrate protective behaviours and other actions that help keep themselves safe and healthy. At Redlands this is a whole school approach across P-6. Our main goals for this esafe program are:

  • Supporting an integrated approach to Digital safety and wellbeing
  • Embedding esafety into our daily teaching practice
  • Providing curriculum related lessons in Circle Time that are authentic and appropriate to each age and stage
  • K-2 students to attend ySafe workshops to support our students but also our teachers and parent community
  • K-2 students appreciating how the Internet connects people
  • Communicating with other people via the Internet
  • Recognise the ‘characters’ in online games often represent real world people

Mother’s Day Breakfast Friday 7 May, 7.45am

We invite all mothers and carers to a special Mother’s Day breakfast next week. To assist in our catering, could you please RSVP here now.  After the breakfast we invite you to Join us in our K-2 classrooms for fun together.

Belinda Oxley Scholarship Appeal

We value participation from all members of our community and are especially grateful for the creative contribution from our students. Belinda Oxley is remembered as a dedicated educator with a passion for visual arts and we are raising funds to honour her legacy and name one means-tested scholarship after her.

Creative Arts Cards

To celebrate Belinda’s legacy, we asked our Preparatory and Junior School students to enter a Creative Arts Competition which closed last Wednesday 21 April. Almost fifty artworks were received across age groups with great variety of images. Winners will be announced next week, stay tuned!

We are delighted to support this cause which acknowledges Belinda’s legacy and were thrilled with how positive the response was from our students towards this wonderful cause.”

The Redlands Arts Cards will be available to pre-order from 13 May and will be advertised in Note Day. All proceeds raised will contribute towards the Belinda Oxley Scholarship.

Thank you to all our young artists who participated in this initiative!

Redlands Arts Luncheon Auction

The online auction with some incredible prizes such as holiday houses, degustation vouchers, wellbeing experiences and many more to support the Belinda Oxley Scholarship Appeal, will be launched on Thursday 13 May and accessible to all members of our community. The Prizes include the following:

Degustation Dinner

Enjoy a degustation dinner at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron Cellar for six people including wines.  Conditions apply and valid for dining Monday to Friday only, lunch or dinner. Valued at $1520 and reserve set at $800.

Wombats and Dingos and Emus, oh my!

Last week Kindergarten got up close and personal with Australian wildlife at the Featherdale Wildlife Park, as part of our investigation into the Australian Bush. However, our learning journey did not begin at the park gates. It began weeks earlier as we developed a framework for successful self-management in this new and unfamiliar scenario. This involved thoughtful discussions as we collaborated to establish what behaviour expectations would look like for successful learning, organisation and relationships outside of the school gates. As part of this success criteria, Kindergarten developed and managed their own organisation with a take home checklist to address attire, sun safety, meals, water and rainy weather needs.

This active involvement in planning self-management strategies meant Kindergarten were confident in their ability to succeed. This was evident as they approached the excursion with energy and enthusiasm, apologies for the 3am wake up of some. We were introduced to Lauren, the wildlife educator, who described the characteristics of Paddy the koala, Clementine the snake, Quilt the blue-tongue lizard and Minty the joey, before letting us have a pat! We then followed our interests, exploring the park and spending time in spaces that sparked our curiosity.

Throughout the day, Kindergarten eagerly posed questions, observed closely, listened attentively and responded with wonderment and awe. This experiential learning not only developed our scientific skills and knowledge of the Australian bush, it also fostered dispositions such as curiosity and self-efficacy which are valuable for life-long success.

Mother’s Day

To celebrate Mother’s Day we would love all of the important ladies in the children’s lives to join us in the Preschool from 9-9.30am on Friday 7 May. We invite you to join in activities and music lessons with the children and teachers.

Parking

Parking around the school can be problematic, especially around pick up time. To ease congestion and ensure the safety of our students, the Preparatory School uses a carline that enables parents to collect their children from the underground carpark from 2.45pm each day. We therefore ask Redlands House families to refrain from parking in the 5 minute Parking Zone outside the Preschool from 2.45pm onwards. Families are still able to park for 5 minutes out the front of Redlands House between 2.30–2.45pm. Cones will be placed on the road at 2.45pm, not before, in order to prepare for the Preparatory Car Line.

Allergies

Please remember that we are an ‘Allergy Friendly Centre’ (ie allergy aware) and have a number of children with serious allergies. Therefore, we ask that any food your child brings to Preschool does not contain nuts or traces of nuts, egg or shellfish. We have a number of resources containing nutritious and well-balanced lunch box ideas available in our parent library in the foyer for inspiration. This year we have children enrolled who are at risk to Anaphylaxis in response to the following items:

  • Peanuts and all tree nuts
  • Chickpeas
  • Coconut
  • Eggs
  • White fish
  • Sesame

Food Breaks in the Preschool

Just a reminder that each child has 3 breaks for food in the preschool each day – Crunch and Sip, Morning Tea and Lunch.

Crunch and Sip is a small fruit or vegetable snack that is accessible to the children, along with their drink bottle.  Please place the container in the wire basket at the door of your child’s classroom.

Morning Tea and Lunch are stored in separate containers in the big fridge in the foyer. Each class has a fridge door to open. Morning Tea containers are kept in the class basket in the fridge and lunch boxes are stored on the shelf.

Secondary Sport

Secondary Sport Redlands Pulse

AFL

Our AFL program on the senior school commenced last weekend with the boys playing their games at Macquarie University.

The Junior Boys 2nd team were gallant against Trinity, with many boys playing their first game of AFL. Trailing by 30 points during the 3rd quarter, the lads closed the gap to as little as 2 points in a terrific 2nd half of football but in the end trailed by 8 points at the end of the game. Our Intermediate Boys side dominated play against Cranbrook with multiple goal scorers and a runaway win.

On Sunday, the Intermediate Girls played against St Ives Blue with many of the girls playing their first ever game of AFL. The coaches were delighted with the improvements throughout the game with the girls winning the last quarter but ultimately giving St Ives the win. Finally, our Junior Girls played against the juggernaut that is the Willoughby Mosman Swans Red team. With many of the girls also playing their first ever game of AFL, the girls improved throughout the game to put their first score on the board to many cheers from the sidelines.

Baseball

During the Easter Holiday break we had 3 students represent Manly-Warringah District Baseball and the Baseball NSW State Championships.

Congratulations to James Greer (Yr 9) who had a strong competition leading the team in run production with his team narrowly missing out on qualifying for the Nationals Competition finishing in third place.

Zander Highland (Yr 7) and Zachary Lark (Yr 8) also completed in the Intermediate League with their team finishing third against just missing out on the National Competition.

Cross Country

Training has started back up again for Term 2. It was great to see so many students enjoying working hard to improve their running.  Training runs every Friday afternoon. Students should change into their sports uniform at lunch time and meet in the Undercroft at 3.20pm, ready to walk to Primrose Park. Students should arrive back at school at approximately 5.00pm.

The ISA Cross Country is Wednesday 26 May (Week 6, Term 2). Permissions and event information will be sent out once available. For more information please contact Mr Nick Walker or Ms Eliza Peirce.

Football

Most of our teams played in a trial game last weekend in preparation for the season. The Girls Football teams played against Barker College. The Junior A and Junior B Girls both got off to a fantastic start with a great win in both games. The Inter A Girls also had a great game and dominated the possession, coming away with a great 2-1 win against one of the powerhouse schools in the competition. The 1st Girls were up against a highly skilled, well drilled Barker team. Although the game was a 4-0 win to Barker at the final siren, the second half showed some great signs of the potential of the 1st Girls Football team.

Many of our boys teams had a trial match against SACS over the weekend, the 13A boys had a 2-1 win, showing some great signs for the future of Redlands Football. The 14A side fought hard, however, came away with a 5-0 loss against the SACS 14A. The 16A Boys showed some great signs in the first half, with SACS proving to be too strong in the second half finishing with a 5-0 loss to SACS. The 2nd Boys had a 2-0 win over SACS and played a great game of team football.

ISA Round 1 will take place this Saturday 1 May. Please check the “Redlands Rhino (FIXTURES)” tab on Redlands Pulse for the most up to date fixtures, which is updated on Tuesday of each week for the upcoming Saturday games. A reminder that students will need to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the start time indicated on the fixture (1 hour for 1st teams). Best of luck to all of our Football teams in the first round of the season this weekend.

Congratulations to the following students who were selected into the ISA Football team this week: Jasmine Black (Open Girls), Brianna Irvine (Open Girls), Alex Ridler (Open Boys), Keian Murphy (16&U Boys), Lachlan Binnekamp (16&U Boys) and Hugo McKay (16&U Boys). Best of luck to all of these students when they compete in the NSWCIS Football Championships later this term.

Hockey

The girls hockey teams played in trials games against Barker over the weekend. The 1st Girls finished with a loss on the day, however, it was great for them to play their first game as a team and work on some key tactical aspect of the game ahead of the first official round. The 2nd Girls and Junior Girls both had great wins respectively, a great team effort by both sides in their first game playing together.

The first round of ISA Hockey will take place this Saturday 1 May. Please check the “Redlands Rhino (FIXTURES)” on Redlands Pulse for the most up to date fixtures, which is updated on Tuesday of each week for the upcoming Saturday games. Best of luck to all of our Hockey teams in the first round of the season.

After their selections into the 16&U ISA Hockey team, Freya Gait (Yr 10), Eloise Trueman (Yr 10) and Jessica Van Extel (Yr 9) represented the ISA in the NSWCIS 16&U Hockey Championships on Friday 23 April. Congratulations to Eloise Trueman and Jessica Van Extel who have been selected into the CIS team who will play in the NSW All Schools Hockey Championships later this year. Well done girls.

Netball

It was great to see Netball back in full force on Saturday.  All teams had a great hit out against some very strong Barker College opponents. We saw some very encouraging signs from a number of teams across the morning.

A reminder that ISA Round 1 begins this weekend, with the majority of teams at home, please ensure you look at the Redlands Rhino for the up-to-date fixtures.

Please ensure wherever you are playing to follow the COVID Safe Protocols of the venue. For those teams playing at NBISC (Redlands home venue) the following orders are in place:

  • 2 spectators per player
  • maintain social distance when seated (1 seat between each spectator)
  • players must wait outside the venue until their game is due to start (coaches will do warm up outside)
  • players must leave the court via the court exit (red sign) at the completion of their game

Rugby

The Redlands Rugby Season kicks off this weekend with matches for our Under 14s, Under 15s and Opens against division rival Blue Mountains Grammar.

All matches will be played at our home ground of Campbell Field at Macquarie University Sporting Fields.

Match times are the following.

  • Under 14s vs Blue Mountains Under 14s – 08:30am
  • Under 15s vs Blue Mountains Under 15s – 09:30am
  • Redlands Opens vs Blue Mountains 1stXV – 10:30am

This will be a wonderful opportunity to kick our season off and I encourage all teams or students who are not playing to attend. For more information please contact Mr Jack Gooding.

Sailing

Ben Harrington (Yr 11) spent most of the school holidays travelling and racing in sailing regattas across the states. During the first week he sailed in the Combined High Schools Regatta on a 16 foot skiff at Lake Macquarie, he and his two female crew had never sailed that boat type before, despite this they won their Division on scratch, came 2nd on handicap, and won in the All School Teams Division!

Ben then travelled to Williamstown Victoria and competed in the Victorian Youth Champs. Unfortunately, between boat equipment failures and a mostly cancelled second day of racing due to no wind, he was not as successful, but still took away two days of training clinics and more national-level racing experience in the 29er class.

Tennis

The Winter Tennis season starts this weekend. Teams and the draw can be found on Redlands Pulse. Please check carefully your start time and venue. Allow plenty of time to get there and warm up. Training groups are now set for the remainder of the season. As we begin the season it is important to remember a few player courtesies to ensure the match days run smoothly:

  • Serving players should have 2 balls with them before they begin serving.
  • Players should never leave the court mid game/ set for a drink. If a drink is needed, players must wait until the change of ends and take a drink walking to the other end.
  • Serving players must announce the score each point and then the game score at the end of each game.
  • All players must know the order of sets and players must be nearby ready to take the court when the previous set is finished.
  • As you are umpiring your own matches, make fair line calls. If in doubt, call it in.
  • Try your best at all times.

At this stage, there are currently no COVID restrictions in place for this weekend. Any restrictions will be communicated each week as required. However, we are encouraging spectators to sign in to each venue with the venues Service NSW QR code or to follow any instructions as directed by the school convenor present.

Just a reminder, please email Eliza Peirce directly regarding injury/illness that eliminates you from a training session. Unexplained absences will result in a lunch time detention. Wet weather notifications can be found on twitter @RedlandsSport, if you cannot find wet weather information, please turn up to your venue regardless.

Round 1 – Winter Sport

In beautiful conditions we commenced our Winter Sport season, exciting for all but especially for our Yr 3 and 4 Netball teams and our Year 5 and 6 Hockey teams who did not have a season last year due to COVID-19.

Team uniforms were on point, sportsmanship was on display, and results were great across the board with all Football, Netball, Hockey teams winning their games. In Rugby our Yrs 5 and 6 teams also secured some wins in their respective games and while our youngest and newest team, our Yrs 3 and 4 Rugby teams, had a loss they certainly showed a lot of potential.

In terms of housekeeping please ensure the following takes place each match day;

  • Arrival in full Redlands Team kit (no other non-Redlands clothing to be worn)
  • Arrive 30 minute warm up prior to scheduled start
  • Drink bottle to go next to coaches kit bag prior to game
  • Required safety equipment – shin pads, mouthguard and boots
  • Parents/spectators to stay off field of play – for Redlands Oval this means viewing the matches from the Piazza outside the canteen

Morning Training Sessions

Well done to all those students who have attend the optional training sessions across the various sports last week. Can you please ensure students are here on time for a 7am start. To make it easier, Footballers can be dropped at the oval gate entrance at 49 Murdoch St.

Cross Country Carnival

As previously advertised the Junior School Cross Country Carnival will take place on Thursday 13 May at the Cammeray Golf Course. All students in Yrs 3-6 will be involved in some capacity. We will be running a staggered format, similar to last year where each Year Group will be transported separately to the course and compete either in the Championship Run or the Fun Run, both the same course and the same distance. For more information about this and to see what event your child is running in please refer to the Redlands Pulse

CIS Hockey

Congratulations to Otis who has been selected for the CIS Primary Boys hockey team and will go forward with the team to the NSW PSSA Hockey Championships in Newcastle from 25 till 27 May.

We wish him the best of success at these trials.

Key Dates and Calendar

On the Junior Sport Pulse Page we will display upcoming Key Dates for each Term. Just below that on the Pulse page we also have a Sport Calendar that has a more comprehensive view of Sport for this term. If you have any questions about what is on and when, please refer to these documents before contacting us.

Parent Information Booklets

For all Sport information regarding what sports we offer when, how to navigate our documents, as well as information on Uniforms and Carnivals please refer to our Parent Information Booklets on Redlands Pulse.

Representative Sport Team Lists

For weekly team selections please refer to the Term 2 Winter Sport team lists. These will be updated on Redlands Pulse following each fixture. Please remember that our Redlands Representative teams are fluid, meaning teams may change week to week depending on 3 main criteria: Ability, Attendance and Attitude. Any team movements will be discussed with your child by their coach. Please make a habit of checking these weekly.

Draw

For your ease and convenience, you can view and save the Winter Draw to your phone/device – 2021 Term 2&3 Winter Draw. As it is live and subject to change, please do not print off the draw. We recommend checking back each Friday evening to ensure you have the correct time and venue for the following morning. There may be occasions where host schools change a time or location midweek and when this occurs the draw will be updated.

Redlands Junior Piano Competition

The Music Department would like to congratulate all finalists who competed in the annual Redlands Junior Piano Competitions on Monday evening. Hosted superbly by Head of Junior Campus Music Mrs Amy Richardson, all students were welcomed to the stage, presenting polished performances from memory and in demonstrating high levels of technical proficiency across all divisions. Guest adjudicator for the competition, Dr Kirill Monorosi from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, was particularly impressed with the outstanding standard of piano playing from students in Years 3-6, commending all competitors on their overall musicality and stylistic interpretation of the repertoire. At the conclusion of each competition, students were presented with their awards by the Principal, Mr Stephen Webber and Head of Junior School, Mr Ari Guha.

The Music Department would like to acknowledge the work of exceptional specialist piano tutors, who mentor our young musicians in their musical endeavors. The team of Piano Tutors here at Redlands includes Ms Julia Booth, Mrs Annette Houghton, Mr Zi-Hao Li, Mr Damon Wade and Mr Jason Xu. Thanks, is also extended to Ms Arienne Brodie and Ms Katherine Moses for their assistance in selecting finalists throughout the audition process and in mentoring these young pianists in order to achieve a high level of performance and presentation. Winter Music Festivals

As we approach the Winter Music Festival Season, the Music Ensembles Program across the Junior and Secondary Campuses, will continue exploring and extending their musical skills in preparation for a variety of concerts throughout May and July. Staff and students are already well-underway in preparing a wide range of repertoire in readiness for the Senior Music Festival (Friday 28 May) and the Junior Music Festival (Thursday 29 July), The Department would like to welcome the school community to be part of these festive concerts.

Senior Music FestivalA Night at the Movies

The Senior Music Festival, A Night at the Movies, is a concert celebrating the vibrant Music Ensembles Program of the Secondary School and this year will be dedicated in honour of Tomomi Takahashi, a Redlands Music Tutor, who sadly lost her battle with cancer last year and who will forever remain in our hearts.

Tomomi will always be remembered as a key member of the Music team, and an exceptional musician who made significant contribution to the life of our School, matched with an everlasting impact on the lives of the students she mentored and the staff she worked alongside.

A number of musical tributes in honour of Tomomi will form part of this concert, and we invite the Music Community to be part of this event, in recognising how our lives can be shaped and impacted through power of music.

While celebrating the wonderful life of Tomomi, we are so thrilled to be recognising the achievements of our Redlands Music students, who after over a year in reduced ensemble arrangements, have been resilient and courageous learners, committing themselves to perfecting their skills. This festival will be true testament to the dedication and perseverance of all our musicians as they present an inspiring evening of music-making.

This exciting event in the school calendar will present a wide range of classical and contemporary repertoire, with the thematic feature of the concert exploring music from well-loved films. Traditionally, in concluding the festival, students from the Music Program participate as part of the Year 12 Finale, in an exciting performance presented through song and dance. This year, graduating students, choral members and a rock ensemble, will be performing a medley from MAMMA MIA: The Movie, with hit tunes from ABBA. The Music Department anticipates a sensational concert in showcasing the talents of its Redlands musicians.
