Issue 12 2020 - 30 Apr 2020

From the Principal

Welcome back to all members of our school community to the new term and a specific welcome to new families and staff. In particular, I welcome our new Head of Preparatory School, Mrs Ainslie Breckenridge, who has started in the role this term and is already having a very positive impact. Ainslie joins us from Barker College, where she was the Primary Curriculum (PYP) Coordinator, having previously held the position of Head of Junior School at PLC Armidale.

This term break was certainly very different for all of us and with ANZAC Day commemoration ceremonies having been cancelled and the School being unable to hold on-campus assemblies, this assembly was developed for our Secondary School students to take part in remotely. I also enjoyed joining in with our Junior School students for their remote assembly on Zoom, which included acknowledgement of ANZAC Day. Another highlight was joining the Preparatory School students for their Zoom assembly which was certainly an entertaining experience and it was wonderful to see the students.

By now I assume you will have read my most recent letter regarding our plans for the staged reintroduction of On-Campus Learning from the start of Week 3, in line with the advice and recommendations from the NSW Government and AHPPC principles for schools. We are very much looking forward to the students joining us on campus as we transition towards the eventual return of all Year Groups attending each day.

As you are all aware, we will understandably have a range of opinions within our community regarding the speed at which this transition should occur. Our focus continues to be on making well-informed decisions and implementing key actions and strategies to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all members of our school community. As will be outlined in more detail in communication to be sent by our Heads of Schools, we have thoroughly addressed the specialist advice in our planning and a large amount of work is going on behind the scenes to action each of these areas. I have been so impressed by the dedication of our staff during this process and am most thankful for the quality and professionalism of our leadership team at the School.

Our New Learning Hub on the Senior Campus was due to be opened at the start of Term 3 this year – and the good news is that the building program is ahead of that schedule. I can’t give a specific date for occupation at this time, but I know that our students and staff will enjoy moving into this exceptional educational facility during this term, which will no doubt be an exciting part of their return to On-Campus Learning. With the scaffolding and temporary stairs having been removed, the campus is certainly feeling more spacious and open. I take this opportunity to sincerely thank parents and other members of the Redlands community for their very generous donations which have enabled the development of this wonderful new facility.

Foundation

A very warm welcome to Term 2! I hope you all had a relaxing holiday and managed to play lots of board games, bake and enjoy the beautiful autumn weather. I personally have refreshed my love of biking and have taken up a running challenge in the preparation for the upcoming Mother’s Day Classic.

If you wish to join the Redlands MDC20 Team please register yourself / your family here. More details can be found on the Service article in this Note Day.

New Learning Hub Update

Great progress has been made on this Senior Campus development. Over the past few weeks the temporary bridge to the temporary classrooms was taken down and the temporary classrooms removed, enabling the landscaping in front of the New Learning Hub to be undertaken. Interiors are in the final stages, student lockers are being installed and classrooms are being equipped.

Thank you to all our donors who supported this transformational project which is getting close to the finish line. Your generous support will benefit current students and generations to come.

Redlands Community Cards

I would like to thank our families who are involved in creating lovely cards for our older Alumni and community members, and Annie Flynn in particular for taking the leadership of this.

A message of cheer will be sent out to all our Platinum Girls next week as their annual luncheon, which reflects and celebrates our Old Girls who graduated from Redlands in 1970 and prior, has been postponed from 6 May. To acknowledge their day and share love and light with them at this time, we are extending a message of care and kindness to our Platinum Girls, including drawings created by current Redlands students Alice Flynn (Yr 4) and Grace Flynn (Yr 2).

Book Club

The Redlands Book Club has joined the online fun and had its first Xoom meeting to discuss A Match Made in Mehendi by Nandini Bajpal. We had the great thrill of being joined online by the book’s author, an Indian born Australian, now based in Boston, USA. We heard about her inspiration for the novel and the intriguing process of writing it.

Our next reads for Term 2 are The Single Ladies of Jacaranda Retirement Home by Joanna Neil, followed by Bad Blood by John Carreyrou, an expose on the medical start up, Theranos.

Our next meeting is Thursday 7 May. It will most likely be a Zoom call and the time has yet to be decided. Please email Lerida Grant on lerida@bigpond.net.au for more information.

Term 2 Welcome

It has certainly been a different to start to the term, with the campus much quieter than usual this week without the return of students, as well. I have certainly missed hearing and seeing the first day of term buzz of excitement amongst our students, but I am looking forward to having students transitioning back to face to face schooling over the coming weeks and returning to the campus soon. As mentioned in my letter at the end of the holidays, when students do return to school, they will see how the campus has transformed in recent weeks with the removal of the temporary classrooms above the John Roberts Centre, the removal of the walkway across to these classrooms and the removal of the temporary stairway in the Liggins Courtyard. We are continuing to make preparations for the opening of the New Learning Hub and are getting excited about this upcoming move.

Term 2: Weeks 1 and 2

As stated in my letter at the end of the holidays, we are continuing in our remote learning and teaching environment for the first two weeks of this term. From the feedback received at the end of last term from students, staff and parents, we have made adjustments such as lengthening Recess by ten minutes during remote schooling and scheduling in Independent Learning Days as per the schedule below:

We are excited to be able to begin our transition back to face to face teaching and learning from Week 3 and can now confirm that we will have Yr 12 students return everyday (5 days a week) from Monday 11 May. We will also have one additional Year Group on site each day for face to face schooling as per the schedule below.

We believe it is important to prioritise our Yr 12 students and their academic, social and pastoral needs in this, their last year of schooling. As we will have two Year Groups on campus each day, we will be incorporating a number of updated health, safety and physical distancing measures. The Executive and Secondary School Leadership Team have been working through the logistics of this return to school plan over the past few weeks. We will be sending a detailed document with these arrangements to parents and carers on Friday 1 May and then we will be able further discuss these plans and answer any parent questions in Parent Zoom Webinars which will be scheduled for Monday 4 May and Tuesday 5 May (more information below). Tutors will be going through these plans with students in their Tutor Groups in the coming days, as well. We appreciate your patience and support in the development of these plans over the past few weeks. We have been regularly receiving guidelines and advice from federal, state and local authorities, as well reflecting on best practices in schools and school systems in Australia and across the world with the aim of ensuring a safe, smooth, productive and sustainable return to on campus learning for students and staff.

Parent Zoom Webinars

We will be holding another round of parent webinars for each year group via Zoom on Monday 4 May and Tuesday 5 May. These webinars will give senior leaders an opportunity to give more detailed information about our transition back to face to face schooling from Week 3 and also address other questions and concerns that parents might have. We hope parents are once again able to attend these webinars remotely via the Zoom links in the schedule below.

ANZAC Day

While this year’s ANZAC Day was very different for all Australians across the country, we were pleased to be able to still hold our annual ANZAC Day Assembly remotely via video on Tuesday. A link to the video was also sent home to parents on Tuesday so that you could view this service and its messages, as well.

I know a number of students and families still commemorated ANZAC with their own Dawn Services in their streets or neighbourhoods and I have included a photo of one of our Service Captains, Maya Auld, leading an ANZAC Day Dawn Service in her local community.

Service Learning Opportunities

While many face to face Service Learning opportunities have had to be put on hold because of Covid-19 restrictions, we are able to offer two upcoming remote Service Learning opportunities in which we would encourage students and members of our community to participate.

Taldumande Camp In for Kids

Taldumande Youth Services is an organisation based in North Sydney and the Northern Beaches which supports vulnerable and homeless children and their families from across the Sydney region. We are encouraging students to participate in a Camp-In on Friday 8 May to raise awareness and funds for young people and their families who are less fortunate. More information can be found in the Service Learning article of Note Day.

Mother’s Day Classic

The Mother’s Day Classic is an annual fun run and/or walk which raises funds and awareness for breast cancer research. Every year many members of the Redlands community participate in this event. However, this year, we are asking members of the Redlands community to participate in the Mother’s Day Classic virtually through the Redlands MDC20 Team. Again, more information can be found in the Service Learning article of Note Day.

iLearn for Parents

As parents are aware, iLearn is our Secondary School Learning Management System for students and they are accessing iLearn pages more than ever during their remote learning. Parents also have access to iLearn course information pages. The iLearn course information pages will allow you to see the formal assessment information and results, course outlines and resources for each of the courses in which your child is enrolled. Please note, parents will not have visibility to each of their child’s individual iLearn class pages as these are for students and teachers only. Further information and tips for accessing iLearn course information pages can be found on the Secondary School page of Redlands Pulse.

Chaplain

ANZAC Day is a time to recall the self-sacrifice of our armed forces and this theme of self-sacrifice is especially poignant in the current state of our country. The ANZACs volunteered to the rallying call that they were needed to protect the rights and freedoms of the empire. The young men and women took steps forward to surrender their rights, their health, their life to protect others. As they found themselves in the trenches their focus would have been less broad and perhaps focused on protecting and even dying for their mates. Each year we take time to remember their sacrifice and the continuing sacrifice others have made through our recent history in the armed forces.

It is said that this is where our national spirit was born (or at least clarified) and as I reflect I see this as true in our country. 2020 has seen a renewal of this spirit. The summer of fires revealed Australians are still willing to sacrifice for others. The firefighters, the emergency services, the Army and Navy, neighbours caring for neighbours and civilians opening their homes as refuge for the fleeing strangers. We remember the 25 who died in NSW during the fires. They left families and friends to mourn the loss, as they made the ultimate sacrifice for others.

The spirit of self-sacrifice is stirred in our community as we face the Covid-19 crisis. The self-sacrifice of our nurses, doctors, cleaners, emergency workers as they stand in the breach knowing that they are at higher risk of catching the virus. The self-sacrifice of each of those who have closed their business’s door knowing there will be long term cost but, for the protection of others, they will endure. Even each of us as we stay at home; we don’t meet up with the family, we don’t go to the beach or the movies or the restaurant because we know we need to sacrifice our rights for the benefit of others.

This is the spirit of self-sacrifice of our nation forged by the ANZACs and remembered and celebrated each ANZAC day.

So as I stood in the dark on my driveway with candle in hand, I thanked God for our ANZACs and all those who have made sacrifices. As I did, the words of Jesus filled my mind: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:13.

It was a foreshadow of his own sacrifice for us to make us his friends. A sacrifice that was needed, a sacrifice that stands for any who would accept it, a sacrifice that took his life for the benefit of others. This sacrifice bespeaks love as does the sacrifice of ANZACs and all who give their life for the benefit of others.

Taldumande Youth Services: Camp in for Kids

The number of homeless children and young people is skyrocketing as a result of Covid-19. Taldumande Youth Services is being inundated with new applications as families and vulnerable young people become victims of the Coronavirus, not by infection, but by circumstance. Children experiencing homelessness are an especially vulnerable population of Australians and on census night 2016 there were 19,400 children aged 1-14 without a home. Right now, indications are that there has never been more demand for homeless services. A time when most of us are safely isolating in our own homes. Job losses, school closures, financial hardship and the impact on mental health is seeing an influx of homeless numbers at an alarming rate.

What can we do to help?

While at home all you need to do is sleep a little ‘rough’ while still in the comfort of your own home, be sponsored by others and raise funds for those less fortunate. You could build a fort in the lounge room, go ‘old school’ and set up blankets over furniture with sleeping bags underneath, sleep on your veranda or set up a tent in your backyard for older children or the whole family.

When?

Redlands will hold our Camp-In on Friday 8 May. Donate and ask friends and family to make a donation to your group in support of Taldumande.

Uniform Shop

The Uniform Shop will re-opened today. Our revised opening hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 8.00am-4.00pm. There will be no late night opening on Thursdays until sport resumes.

To satisfy our social distancing requirements and protect our families and staff, we will only allow one customer into the shop at any time. As this is a particularly busy time of the year with students needing winter uniform, we strongly encourage parents to continue placing orders at www.flexischools.com.au or by emailing us at uniformorders@redlands.nsw.edu.au to avoid having to wait outside the Shop. Preference will be given to customers collecting online orders.

Welcome Back

Welcome back to Term 2, and I hope that all families had a lovely Easter holiday break.

We wanted to take this opportunity to remind parents that all of the usual support services are still available, although they may look a little different. Students can email these supports directly or through wellbeing@redlands.nsw.edu.au and staff will respond accordingly during school hours.

Our Counsellors have developed a Pastoral Support iLearn page with a variety of different resources. Parents are also welcome to email any of these supports if you are concerned about your son or daughter, or just need some advice about how to support them.

Welcome Back

It was wonderful to connect with some of our Yr 11 students online on Tuesday for the commencement of Term 2. Like our students, I welcomed the interaction and connection after a much quieter holiday than usual. I had the opportunity to help some students in 11Roseby Red reflect on their Approaches to learning grades. These conversations are vitally important and allows students to take a lens to their approach to study and learning. The process helps them to identify areas for further improvement and to recognise their strengths and celebrate their achievements. This week, during Tutor Time our students are finalising their Legacy Vlog projects and Mr Walker and I enjoyed viewing 11DB’s contribution, expertly edited by Harrison Winton. I am looking forward to the term ahead and particularly seeing students face to face and “in the flesh” on Monday 11 May, after such a long time. I hope you are all well and I look forward to continuing to support our Yr 11 students during Term 2.

Year 10

Welcome back to Term 2. I hope you all had a lovely time over Easter and enjoyed spending some enforced time together as a family!

As you would have heard from both Mr Webber and Mr Corcoran, we are hoping to plan a gradual return to campus for Yr 10 over the coming weeks. Weeks 1 and 2 education will remain by remote learning, with plans to return to campus for one day a week in Weeks 3 and 4.

Meanwhile, please can you continue to email ssabsence@redlands.nsw.edu.au if your child is unable to attend Zoom classes or Tutor Time at any point during the day. Tony and I are emailing any student who is marked absent at any point during the day and does not have an ‘explained absent’ in the form of a parent email to the school. If your child does miss any sessions, please ask them to also email their teacher to let them know and then catch up the work that will be available on iLearn. Yr 10s have begun being very proactive in doing this and taking responsibility for themselves, which is great to see!

Independent Learning Day

Due to the successful trial of an Independent Learning Day at the end of Term 1, there will be one for both Week 1 and 2 this term. The first one is Friday 1 May and the second is Thursday 7 May. The students will not have any Zoom classes on these days but will have work that has been set by their teachers to complete. The only time they are still required to attend a Zoom session is for Tutor Time, to enable their Tutors to check-in on how they are going.

Effort Grades

Students have begun looking at their effort grades with their Tutors and setting goals for this coming term. They have been asked to complete a proforma that they will then discuss with their Tutor in a one-on-one Zoom session during Tutor Time in the coming couple of weeks. Please have a discussion with your child about this, and if you have any concerns, please get in touch with their Tutor or me. We are here to support you in any way we can.

Tutor Time

Our Tutor time has changed due to an increased recess break. It is now from 10.40-11.00am. This time is used as follows:

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday are times for the Tutors to informally check-in with their groups, play games, have chats, and also conduct one-on-one meetings in break-out rooms.

Wednesday is a whole Year Group Zoom meeting and Friday is a remote Chapel session. These sessions are all compulsory and are very important to enable the Yr 10 Pastoral team to check-in on all students and see how they are managing. It is also an important time for students to socialise with each other in their small Tutor Groups.

This term we welcome two new students into our Yr 9 community. Momo Elsworth has joined Cowper Yellow and Mark Danse, Roseby Red. We thoroughly look forward to meeting Momo and Mark in person hopefully in the not too distant future.

Tutor Time remains a fun opportunity for students to interact with their Tutor Group online.

  • This term, Tutor Time will start at 10.40am via Zoom and will run for 20 minutes. Students will meet every day (Independent Learning Days included).
  • This week, Tutors and students have been reflecting on student Term 1 Approaches to Learning Reports. Students have been setting SMART goals in response to their Effort Tracking Scores and individually meeting with their Tutor to discuss goals.
  • Chapel will continue to be held each Friday. Everyone will attend their Tutor Group Zoom meeting when they will watch a message from our Senior Campus Chaplain. Students can then opt to either complete Chapel reflection questions provided or step away from their screens prior to Period 3.

In response to student, parent and staff feedback, over the break there were some changes to our Remote Learning arrangements. All information was shared with parents via the Term 2 welcome letter sent from Mr Sean Corcoran. Students also familiarised themselves with this information on Tuesday. All relevant documents are available for review on Redlands Pulse and on the Yr 9 Pastoral Care iLearn page.

Absence

Student attendance at Redlands is monitored regularly.  A reminder that every absence must be supported by an email from a parent/guardian to Secondary School Absences. We understand that there can be a number of reasons for absence. How can students help in the process of keeping accurate attendance records?

  • Having technical issues? We understand that there can be issues with personal devices. Students should promptly email their teacher to receive the work for the lesson. Issue is persistent? Email iSupport to receive assistance and contact all subject teachers.
  • Late to class? This could mean that the student misses roll-call. It is the students’ responsibility to manage their time appropriately and be ready for the start of each lesson.
  • Private Lesson? Students may need to remind their Private Tutor to take/amend the roll.
  • Sick? Allow appropriate time to rest and get better.

Year 8

This Week

Welcome back to Term 2! It has been wonderful getting to see all of our Yr 8 students over the last few days as we begin a new term with new goals, Term 1 reflections and refining our experience with remote learning. Students have had a chance to see their friends again and check-in with their Tutors as they begin their one-on-one conversations for goal setting and reflection.

Tutor periods for the next two weeks will continue to be a casual space for students to check-in with their Tutors and peers to allow for social connections and individual support, as needed.

Upcoming Events

School photographs have arrived and will be distributed starting Week 3 when students begin returning to campus. If you missed the chance to order school photos, there is still time to place an order. More information to come Week 3.

Mark your calendars for Wednesday 5 August for the Yr 8 Parent Teacher Evening. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet all of your child’s teachers and to hear how your child is going in each subject.

Parent Tip from Dr Prue Salter

Explore Dr Prue Salter’s new module Guide to Remote Home Learning on her Study Skills website. Information is included in stages. At this point, most students are in Stage D: Maintaining Your Approach. The subtopics include: Staying Focused and Motivated, Longer Term Work, Specifically for Seniors, Physical and Mental Health and Asking for Help. All of these modules allow students to work through and self-assess what they are already doing and what they might need to consider doing to maintain a strong home learning routine and a good balance of mental and physical health while learning from home.

Year 7

Welcome back to Term 2 and I hope that all families had a lovely Easter spent with family. As students continue to settle back into remote learning, I thank you all for the support, patience and feedback (feedback@redlands.nsw.edu.au) you have provided.

Our Yr 7 Pastoral Care program is continuing and will be an integral aspect of maintaining connections with the students. Until students return to school in full capacity, Term 2 will continue to focus on:

  • Refining remote learning skills
  • Self-care when working remotely
  • Social connectedness and resilience through Tutor Group activities.

Informal one-on-one sessions have begun whereby Year Advisors and Tutors will check in and assess the individual wellbeing of students. It is hoped that such sessions will connect students more with key adults who are supporting them through this period of time where uncertainty and anxiety may be evident. If you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact.

We wanted to take this opportunity to remind parents that all of the usual support services are still available, although they may look a little different.  Tutors, Year Advisors, Counsellors, the Dean of Students and the Chaplain are available as Pastoral supports.

Effort Tracking

This week, students will have had a chance to go through their Approaches to Learning Reports from the end of Term 1. Students have met with their Tutors to reflect on the data to target specific subjects and to set new goals as they begin Term 2. We have been incredibly proud of the effort grades Yr 7 students have achieved thus far. Their hard work, persistence and dedication to achieve course outcomes has been exceptional.

Study Skills – Prue Salter

As we will not be able to run the Yr 7 Study Skills evening this year, we have arranged for you to be able to access a filmed version online until 1 June. Given the challenges students faced last term, it is now time to help students re-focus, assess and adjust their approach to their learning with tips and techniques from the study skills expert, Dr Prue Salter.

Ideally it is best that you watch these videos together with your child, just like you would if you attended the evening in person. The study skills seminar has been broken down into bite sized chunks so if you do not have time to do it all in one go, you can work through the session at your own pace. You can also go back and watch any of the videos during the four week period. The video page will prompt you to download the workbooks for the session and will show you at the end where you can then access all the slides from the session that are shown in the video. The link to access the evening is here; Username: redlands

Congratulations

Congratulations to all students who participated in the Secondary School Cross Country Carnival. It was brilliant to see the enthusiasm had by so many students. A special mention goes to Eleanor Blankenstein, Emily Collins, Federico Gazzilli, Krishna Gupta, Charles Hargrave, Julianna Harrington, Imogen Jeffery-Bilich, Angus McInnes and Stella Simpson-Morgan who placed in the 12 and 13 age groups.

Visual Arts

Yr 7 students have been incredibly busy in Visual Arts. Students were given the task of recreating a famous portrait painting using props from around the house – inspired by this article http://blogs.getty.edu/iris/getty-artworks-recreated-with-household-items-by-creative-geniuses-the-world-over/#tips. What wonderful achievements by Yr 7!

Head of Junior School

Welcome Back to Term 2

Welcome back to students and families as we commence Term 2. In particular, I welcome new students and families this term and look forward to connecting with you in person very soon understanding that these are strange circumstances in which to start a new school.

It was great to see the students in our Zoom assemblies on the first day, where we were also joined by our Principal and Deputy Principal, Mr Webber and Ms McGarry. Mr Webber again spoke to the students and reminded the students of their ‘One Word for 2020’ which I had set them a task to focus on in the very first assembly of 2020 and in particular, he spoke of perseverance which he knew was a focus word for a number of students.

You will have received my Term 2 Information letter sent last week and this has a large amount of important information for Junior School families.

Weeks 3 and 4 – Phased Return to On-Campus Learning

The letter from Mr Webber earlier today outlined our plans for returning to On-Campus Learning in Weeks 3 and 4. Please be assured that the health of students and staff will remain paramount in this process. More detailed information will be provided to families tomorrow.

ANZAC Day

As is always the case in the start of Term 2 assembly, we paused to remember the many Australian and New Zealand Army Corps military personnel who served, fought, and given their lives for our country whilst recognising their courage, mateship, skill and perseverance.

The Dawn Service at Mosman has been an annual event for me and the School so it was hard not to be there this year and mark the occasion more privately. However, I was moved to hear of some of our Junior School students’ efforts in remembering this day which I was able to share in our student assemblies.

Georgia Slack (Yr 5) wrote to me and shared a wonderful photo of herself with her sister and brother as they played the Last Post at dawn outside their home for their neighbours. Similarly, Thomas (Yr 6), Alice (Yr 4) and Grace Flynn held a short ceremony in their school uniform outside their house at 6.00am on ANZAC Day. Alice read the Ode to the Fallen, Grace held a candle and Thomas played the Last Post on his trumpet.

Budding artist, Viraj Tandon (Yr 3), created a wonderful tribute to ANZAC Day; a charcoal drawing of a faceless soldier which he also submitted to ABC News. His image was selected to be displayed on their website and received an overwhelming online response from the general public.

I commend these students for their community-minded gestures which were appreciated by their others at this poignant time and to all students and families who may have marked the occasion in a different way this year.

Learning Review Meetings

Information has been circulated to families via email by the Dean of Administration, Ms Atkins, on the online booking process for families to make times to speak with class teachers about students’ learning. Please note that this time will not be a time for technical assistance or feedback on remote learning but any feedback on this topic should continue to be sent to the School’s central feedback email address.

NAPLAN Cancelled for 2020

As you may well be aware, the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN), which is an annual assessment for students in Yrs 3, 5, 7 and 9 will not proceed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 situation.

Curriculum Camps for Yrs 3, 4 and 5

In addition to the Curriculum Camp for Yr 5 that was cancelled at the end of last term, this term’s scheduled camps for Yrs 3 and 4 will also not take place. Early preliminary exploration is taking place to see if there is scope to reschedule these at a later point in the year, subject to school being back to normal and the health and safety guidelines at that time.

Borrowing Books from The Arnold Library

To help the balance between online and offline reading, our Junior School Library team are able to help support this and you can request some books or the team are happy to choose some for your child(ren). If you wish to do this, please email Juniorlib@redlands.nsw.edu.au and books are then loaned to parents or students, cleaned, packaged up with their name and left in the foyer for next day pickup. Returns are put in a box, also in the foyer where books are cleaned and shelved. The service will be subject to change as based on government announcements and gradual return to school.

Live Zoom Workouts

It was wonderful to see so many students involved in our first ‘live’ workout sessions on Wednesday afternoon when we have Sport in our timetables. We will continue to run these and also explore opportunities to have optional Saturday morning sessions when we would normally be playing interschool sport.

Welcome Back

Thank you to everyone for your warm welcome. My first week at Redlands has certainly been a steep learning curve however I very much appreciate the kindness and guidance from staff and parents who I have met in these first few days. As I stated earlier in my Welcome to Term 2 letter, I encourage both parents and students to come and talk to me to introduce yourselves and to give me a brief run down of which Year Group you belong to this year and anything else that you would like to share. The more conversations I have, the faster I will get to know this wonderful community.

Term 2 has started successfully with a return to remote learning. After a few minor glitches on day 1, we were up and running with our Daily Planner providing us all with a view of how the day would look. I know our teachers and I enjoyed the Zoom sessions immensely. These sessions brought a smile to the faces of both students and teachers alike. The enthusiasm to reconnect was infectious. I must say my favourite part of the week was meeting you all at our first online Prep Assembly. Seeing smiling faces and giving me a thumbs up was a heart-warming experience. I can’t wait to meet you all face to face. A big thank you to all those students who posted a picture or video of something that was special to them. The messages on Seesaw have been just beautiful. Watch this space to see what the Week 2 challenge will be!

Parent / Teacher Interviews Weeks 2 and 3

Thank you to those families who have filled in their timeslot to talk with their classroom teacher. This is a great opportunity to discuss your child’s learning in Term 1 and also it will give the staff a chance to outline ‘where to next’ with their learning. Any feedback surrounding Seesaw as a learning platform or the delivery of remote learning itself won’t be discussed at this meeting. Please continue to provide any comments you have to feedback@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Semester 1 Reports

Semester 1 reports will be written and distributed this semester as normal and the timing will be confirmed with families as soon as possible. Staff have sufficient evidence from both on campus and remote learning to provide comments. NESA has also released a statement that gives some guidance for staff when assessing and reporting at this time.

Library Books

From Week 3 onwards, students who are rostered on to come to school can bring in their library books on that day to swap over. They will be taken to the Library throughout the day in small groups. Parents who wish to swap over their ‘big borrow’ from the end of Term 1 are asked to email Victoria Roberts in the Library. She will put together a new ‘big borrow’ for you and leave it for pick up at the Prep Reception desk.

Redlands House/Transition Gold

Welcome back for Term 2. We do hope all our Redlands House families had a safe and enjoyable break, and an opportunity to spend some quality time with their families. Although this term has not started the way we would have hoped, we are grateful for our strong connections and our online learning platform, Storypark. The response from parents and families has been fantastic. Please continue to use Storypark as a communication tool, not only with staff but with other families too. In this challenging time we very much appreciate the strength of our community working together for the benefit of the students. At Redlands, we don’t enrol children, we enrol families – you all become a part of our ‘village’. The Redlands House staff are missing not only the children but the parents and families too.

Weeks 3 and 4 – Phased Return to On-Campus Learning

Secondary Sport

Throughout the first two weeks of Term 2 we will be continuing our online format for Sport. All students who are registered for a winter sport are expected to be engaging with the content provided through iLearn and from their relevant Sport staff member. These program have been carefully designed to ensure there is collaboration within teams in certain sports, as well as developing critical physical and technical skills for the sports. All students within the school are welcome to join any of the available sessions either as extra sessions to their specific sport or just for general fitness for those students that may not be completing a rep sport throughout winter.

Fitness Centre

We have a number of pieces equipment that are great for the athletic development of students (and adults) including skipping ropes, resistance bands and stretch bands. These are great for warm up and short, at home workouts. If you would like to borrow any equipment, please contact Mr Gooding (jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au) or alternatively we can arrange for them to be purchased.

Football

Gerry Gomez (Director of Coaching: Football) has been working hard during this down time. There are a number of great training skills and drills that students can access on iLearn. These are great drills that you can do in the comfort of your backyard or a small 2m x 2m area. There will also be a number of challenges and fitness activities going up in the coming weeks, we are encourage all the Redlands Football Program to continue with these challenges and to complete the fitness challenges in order to keep their skills and fitness levels up for possible season ahead. A reminder that all of the Live Zoom Sessions are now available on iLearn, if you have missed any (or would like to do them again) of Mr. Gomez’ sessions they are all in the one place.

Hockey

There are a number of skills and drills videos now on iLearn for all of the Hockey program to access, if you require any equipment for these activities (balls, cones, sticks), please let Ms Seebohm know and we can arrange a time to have them collected. Again, the live Zoom sessions that have been carried out on Tuesday afternoons are also available on the iLearn page if students wish to complete this workout again.

Welcome Back

In these unusual times can I welcome you back to Term 2. I will assume there was not much of an opportunity to replicate Term 1 school holidays of previous years but hopefully the restrictions allowed the opportunity to spend more quality time with your family members. The recent announcements by the Government relating to schools are exciting knowing there is light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully we will see each other soon.

Cross Country Carnival

While it is not possible to run our Cross Country Carnival this term due to the current climate, in some exciting news I can confirm that we have secured Cammeray Golf Course on Thursday 17 September (Term 3, Week 9). The students will complete a unit of work in their PDHPE class later this term in preparation for Term 3.

IPSHA Sport Update

As you would be aware we participate in both IPSHA and HICES sporting pathways for our Junior School students. Below is the latest information from IPSHA regarding boys’ and girls’ sport. Please keep in mind that this is all based on the current rulings by Government and we will adapt in whatever way we are able to should the situation change.

Girls

  • No change at present.
  • Were restrictions to be relaxed and it is deemed safe to play sport then IPSHA would be happy to facilitate an ‘opt in’ Saturday sport program over whatever weeks remained.
  • At this point IPSHA are hopeful that Term 3 sport will proceed as normal.

Boys

  • With the secondary associations having ruled a line through all Term 2 sport, it may make it difficult  ‘politically’ for IPSHA to go ahead on Saturday 30 May as previously indicated but it might be a case of ‘opt in’ as described above for the Girls.
  • Term 3 sport would be three rounds of Rugby / Football / AFL and then athletics as normal. The format over those three rounds may be gala day style so as to maximise games for the students.

Redlands HomeFit

At the end of last term it was great to receive feedback from those families who have been visiting Redlands Homefit  and selecting some items to stay active during this time. What was more pleasing was to read some of the activities that our students have been logging in their daily exercise log.

Parents and students are encouraged to continue to visit Redlands HomeFit located on Redlands Pulse where a variety of content has been uploaded and will continue to be over the coming weeks. This page will be regularly updated with tips, hints, blogs, videos and routines. Can I encourage you to make some time to visit this page in the coming days and weeks to see if there is something that would suit you and your family.

NSW/ACT/Qld Interschools Update

All NSW Regional Interschools events in the July school holiday period (Saturday 4 July to Sunday 19 July) in NSW resorts are now cancelled. This includes the Sydney Interschools event at Perisher.

The Redlands Cup (11 July) also needs to be (very sadly) cancelled! Any payments to cancelled events will be fully refunded next term.

Snow Australia Interschools and Thredbo continue to plan for the August NSW/ACT/QLD State Interschool Championships. A formal announcement of either the hosting or the cancellation of this August event will occur on or before the end of July. The qualification process for the State event will be developed and published by mid-April – (this has not yet happened).

Snow Australia Interschools and Perisher continue to plan for the September Snow Australia National Interschool Championships. A formal announcement of either the hosting or the cancellation of this September event will occur on or before mid-August. Qualification to the Australian event, if any August State event is not held, will be developed by the National Interschools Committee during July.

*Please note that all scheduling is provisional and dependent on event entries and operational conditions.

*Schedule adjustments may also be required as a result of changed operational landscapes.

Decisions around all July holiday programs at HCC will be advised as soon as possible. We need more information as the main consideration is Government Policies and the opening of the resorts.

FOSS Events

Friends of Snowsports (FOSS) regrets that The Icebreaker event at the Balmoral Beach Club on Thursday 30 April was cancelled by the venue.

The Second Hand Ski and Snowboard Equipment Sale on the Senior Campus on Sunday 3 May has to be postponed until further notice.

The next FOSS meeting is on Monday 11 May at 6.00pm via Zoom. Link will be published next week.

Ballet and Dance

What a fantastic start we have had to Term 2. Thank you to all our students, tutors and parents for supporting our remote learning Ballet and Dance classes and making sure Term 2 is off to a terrific start. It was just wonderful to see and talk and learn with students again. It is that terrific ability to adapt that takes us along new paths and makes these classes so very special indeed.

As we continue delivering classes online, there are some areas of responsibility that we would like to highlight to parents and students.

Supervision of Prep Students

Parents are responsible for the supervision of Prep students during online classes. It is always advised that there is a responsible adult present (in the vicinity of the computer) when a student is working online.

Suitability of Space

Please make sure that the Dance class is taking place in a suitable space. We do recommend 3m x 3m (or at least 2m x 2m) of clean floor space to allow for the students to actively take part in the class. Please also remove any items that could cause injury, including books, toys, pets etc.

Uniform

All students should wear their Dance uniform for class.

Opting out of online Ballet and Dance Classes

As advertised, our 2020 classes will all run online, via Zoom with very few exceptions, (performance groups) until further notice. Students who do not want to continue their Ballet and Dance classes online, must let the office know to allow for rebates to be put in place.

Marking the Roll

Class rolls will be marked as per normal practice. Please make all students aware. Students should join the class on time and remain in class throughout the online class.

New Faces

We welcome two new wonderful teachers on board. Ms Susie Sturgis and Ms Jennifer Psaroulis who will both be teaching/assisting Jazz going forward. We will also announce a new Senior Jazz teacher shortly.

Susannah has over 18 years of dance experience, skilled in Jazz, Tap, Contemporary and Ballet styles. Her performance credits include the Sydney Opera House, Schools Spectacular Tap Troupe, Chinese New Year Festival, Dance Of Champions (Channel 10) and Everybody Dance Now ‘The Dying Art Society’ (Channel 10). Susannah has been teaching dance for over five years and is excited to join the Redlands staff as a teacher after working as an assistant teacher at Redlands since early 2019. Susannah is currently studying a Bachelor of Primary Education specialising in Early Education at Notre Dame University.

Jennifer, a Redlander and the 2019 Dance Captain, has been performing nationally in Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, Lyrical, and Hip-Hop since the age of six. Throughout her training, she has completed all of her RAD Ballet examinations with Distinctions, including Advanced 2. She trained at Redlands, where she had major lead roles in Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote and The Nutcracker. Jennifer has been teaching dance for the last three years, predominantly choreographing eisteddfod routines for both groups and solos. She is currently studying a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Advanced Studies at Sydney University majoring in Theatre and Performance Studies and Psychology. Jennifer is extremely excited to be back at Redlands as part of the faculty working together with the teachers who inspired her.

Welcome back to Term 2. I hope the Easter time has given families time to refresh and connect together in new ways at these challenging times. I look forward to seeing all our Drama and Theatre students in our Extra Subject program in online and remote classes in Term 2. These exciting classes offer our students a great form of creative expression in Acting, Film, Music Theatre and Production in all areas of the school. I am so thankful for the creative and resourceful way our staff have adapted to support our students development in the arts. What Do Lessons Look Like In Your Home?

The Music Department welcomes the Music community back after what we trust has been a relaxing time in which to reconnect with family and friends in many new and different ways. From Facetime through to quiet time with our family members, we hope this has been a wonderful time to appreciate, create and make music.

In meeting our goal to deliver online learning platforms for the Academic, Cocurricular and Extra Subjects Music programs, we are pleased to be supporting Music lessons for all students from Kindergarten through to Yr 12. This is inclusive of the Private Music Tuition program and Extra Subject Group Tuition, as we resume Rock Bands and Musicianship. The Music Ensemble program (Junior and Secondary School) will be delivered via Google Classroom and iLearn.

We would like to acknowledge the Redlands ICT Department for collaboratively working with Music staff in preparing, facilitating and supporting virtual learning environments in readiness for Term 2.

Term 2 Remote and Online Junior School Performing Arts

The Music Department is pleased to resume the majority of lessons and ensembles on the Junior Campus. This is inclusive of Private Music Tuition, Group Tuition and Music Ensembles.

In providing a range of musical learning experience and resources, and in reconnecting with Junior Campus students live via either Zoom or in Google Classroom, we look forward to supporting the students in their music-making at Redlands.

Please refer to the guidelines that have been issued by Heads of Section to ensure this is a safe and productive online experience for our students and tutors.

Live Video Conferencing with Students via Zoom Guidelines

Prior to accepting a Zoom invite from a Redlands staff member, you are required to accept the online guidelines which have been developed by the School and previously been emailed to Junior Campus Private Music Tuition families. These have been constructed to ensure that we are all mindful of the responsibilities we all have when using an online tool such as this platform.

In addition for the Private Music Tuition program, parental permissions are required. If parents are yet to complete this authorisation, please click on this Google form.

Please note that the only Music Ensembles we will not be running at this stage are Preparatory Choir and Preparatory Strings.
