Issue 12 2018 - 03 May 2018

From the Principal

A very warm welcome back to all families as we commence Term 2. I extend a special welcome to the new students and their families who have joined our community from the UK, Canada and Luxembourg and from local schools, and to those who have commenced their education at our Redlands House Preschool.

ANZAC Services

On the first day of term we remembered those who have served our country with our Secondary School ANZAC Service, and Junior and Preparatory Schools’ ANZAC Assemblies. Redlands parent, Lieutenant Colonel Craig Delaney ADF (retired), spoke to both Secondary and Junior School students about the Army values of Courage, Initiative, Respect and Teamwork and how they can be embraced in a school environment. Junior School students also learnt about the history of the slouch hat and the bugle. Lieutenant Colonel Delaney urged students not only to reflect on the ANZACs but also on all the soldiers who have served Australia in other wars, thereby contributing to shaping our great nation, and their families; and all those who have undertaken peacekeeping operations. They have all contributed to maintaining the ANZAC spirit and tradition.

At the Secondary School ANZAC Service we also reflected on an excerpt from the 1918 edition of The Redlander, the School Year Book, describing the excitement of the day 100 years ago when the Armistice was signed. Upon arriving at School “We all went into Assembly. Everybody came! Everybody cheered! Everybody smiled! On this day of days the words of Hark, the Herald Angels Sing seemed to come by inspiration. After Assembly up went the flag, and with it three hearty cheers.” The excerpt encapsulates the mood of the day, but finishes with a more sobering message: “It was a great day! A splendid day! A day it will be hard to forget. Heaven help us when we do! For when the world is able to forget the joy and infinite blessing of Peace, another war is close at hand”.

Staff Professional Development/Parent Life Ready Symposium

While Term 2 commenced on Tuesday for students, our teaching staff participated in a day of Professional Development on Monday. At the first session, which was attended by all Redlands staff, Dr Helena Popovic, an expert on brain function and neuroplasticity, gave a very motivating and entertaining presentation on how to Boost your Brain. Following morning tea, Mark Church, co-author of Making Thinking Visible, who works with some of the project teams in the ongoing work of Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and who visited Redlands several times last year, led our academic leaders from all three Sections of the School. The theme of these two sessions and of a third on Tuesday afternoon, was to introduce these middle leaders to an Action Research model which is being used in a number of schools worldwide with whom he works. He will be returning in June and again later in the year to see how the Action Plans are developing. Our Subject Coordinators on the Senior Campus and our Year Coordinators on the Junior Campus will lead their direct reports in pursuit of these specific Action Research investigations, which aim to look more deeply at a chosen aspect of their development of our Culture of Thinking and its practice. Dr Burgess and I joined our Middle Leaders for all three sessions with Mark and greatly enjoyed learning and thinking about learning with our academic leaders.

Following that afternoon session, Mark stayed on to be the guest speaker in the first of a series of Life-Ready events which Dr Emma Burgess is planning for 2018. We were delighted by the large audience in Redlands Hall who came to hear Mark speak and then to put questions based upon his talk to a panel comprised of our three Heads of Section, Mark and me. The interest among those attending led to some very perceptive and good questions which kept the panel on our toes. The first question asked the panel to respond to how ready our teaching is to equip our students for a rapidly approaching future world of Artificial Intelligence and robots and the final question asked for more information upon how parents can support their children and our teachers in developing their thinking. Thank you to all who came along and participated in the evening. It is incredibly heartening to Redlands teachers to see the keenness among our parents to want to learn themselves about their parenting opportunities to help their children become excellent learners with powerful dispositions to learning.

New Learning Hub Update

During the School holiday period, the restorative work was completed on the New Music Centre, including the replacement of the timber floors in all three Music rooms. which were impacted by surface water last term. The area outside the building has also been substantially completed and this has allowed the area beneath the Lang Gymnasium to be connected with that external area, thereby increasing outdoor space and providing easier access to the New Music Centre and the other classrooms within the building. Significant progress was made on the piling and earthworks in preparation for the laying of the base of the New Learning Hub.

This month’s report from our project managers and builders has again confirmed that the scheduled completion of the New Learning Hub by the end of Term 2 2019 remains on time, with the building expected to be available for classes from the start of Term 3. The final works of Stage 1, landscaping from the NLH right across to Gerard St over the top of the New Music Centre, and the access road for the campus along the western boundary, will then continue and are scheduled to be completed in time for the start of the 2020 school year.

Head of Secondary School

Term 2 Welcome

It has been wonderful to see the students return this week and hear their excited greetings and their laughter ringing through the playground. Our Yr 12 HSC and IB students are sitting their Half Yearly Examinations offsite for the first two weeks of this term and we wish them all the best during these assessments of their learning. It was a busy holiday period for many of our students who travelled to China or Japan on Languages tours, travelled to Arnhem Land on one of our Service Learning trips or participated in the Winter Sports Camp at Berry. It sounds like all of these have been fulfilling and enjoyable experiences for our students and I would like to thank the teachers and staff who organised these trips for them. It was also a great pleasure to see a number of staff, parents and students at the moving ANZAC Dawn Service at Georges Heights in the holidays. School Captain, Jasmine Zhou, and Service Captain, Hugh Smylie, laid a wreath on behalf of the School and assisted in the Service by reading pieces during the ceremony.

On Monday, Dr Helena Popovic presented to the staff about ways to boost our brains as we prepare for the term ahead. The advice she gave resonated with the staff but was also applicable to students and parents in our wider community and I will share more in a future Note Day. We also were very fortunate to have Mark Church, co-author of Making Thinking Visible, which is part of Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, continue his ongoing work with our academic leaders while Pastoral leaders and teachers focused on mental health issues that affect our students and support strategies we can implement. As Mark Church said when speaking to parents on Tuesday evening at our inaugural Life Ready Series event for parents, a school that truly values students’ learning must also truly value teachers’ learning and I can proudly say Redlands values both.

On Tuesday morning, we held our own Secondary School ANZAC Service in Dunnet Hall. It was a moving and poignant service of music (with a specially commissioned piece, Proud Echo, composed by our very own Commander Phillip Anderson, OAM RAN, and played by our Advanced Concert Band); reflections (from both staff and students); history (with Dr Lennox sharing an excerpt from a Redlander in the days after the Armistice in 1918); and powerful messages, punctuated by an address by our guest speaker (and Redlands parent), Lieutenant Colonel Craig Delaney. He focused on the ANZAC values of Courage, Initiative, Respect and Teamwork that were not only so important on the shores of Gallipoli over 100 years ago, but are so important for our school community today. I thank everyone who made this Service such a special start to the term.

Staffing Update

It is with sadness that we will farewell HSIE Teacher and Assistant Yr 9 Year Advisor, Mr Ted Scott at the end of Week 2. Mr Scott joined Redlands at the beginning of Term 4 2015 and has been a valued teacher, Pastoral leader and Snowsports enthusiast during his time at Redlands. Mr Scott leaves us to return to the Department of Education at North Sydney Girls High School and we wish him all the best in his new position. For the remainder of Term 2, Ms Sarah Major will be taking on the majority of Mr Scott’s classes until we appoint a replacement. Ms Major is a familiar face in the Redlands community as she has taken on a number of short term teaching positions in the HSIE Department over the past few years. We will also be interviewing for a new Yr 9 Assistant Year Advisor and will announce this appointment in due course.

Life Ready Series: Thinking Skills for Life

It was wonderful to see so many of you attend our inaugural Life Ready Series talk Thinking Skills for Life. Mark Church, co-author of the book Making Thinking Visible: How to Promote Engagement, Understanding and Independence for All Learners, spoke to parents about the importance of developing thinking dispositions and shared some of the journey he has been on with our teachers for the past year. This talk was followed by a Question and Answer session with school leaders across the three campuses.

One of the questions from the audience was, “What can we, as parents, do to support these initiatives at home?” and some of the responses from the panel and Mark Church were:

  • Help develop a growth mindset with students by focusing your praise on the process, learning and effort rather than their skill or ability.
  • Ask them questions about their learning as opposed to their results. (For example, instead of asking them, “What mark did you get on that assessment?” ask them, “What did you learn from that assessment?”)
  • Focus on the learning over the work. The completion of work should not be the goal of an assignment; rather the learning should be the goal.
  • Challenge them but don’t rescue them. When your child encounters difficulties, don’t jump in to solve the problem for them but ask them probing questions that will help them think through the problem and find a course of action moving forward.

We look forward to future presentations in the Life Ready Series in the months ahead and continuing to build our partnership between school and home.

Study in the USA Information Evening

Redlands is proud to once again host the Study in the USA Information Evening on Monday 7 May from 5.30 – 7.30pm. Representatives from 30 American universities will be in attendance to not only share specific information on their universities, but to also give students and parents valuable insights on the process of applying to American universities. I would encourage families who are thinking about applying to American universities in the future to attend this excellent event.

Winter Uniform

A reminder that students should be in proper Winter uniform for Terms 2 and 3. Please ensure students continue to take pride in their uniform by wearing their blazers to and from school. Also, a reminder that girls should have skirts with a “hem falling to the top of the knees” and that boys should have hair that is cut “away from the eyes, ears and collar and a style that is neat and conservative”. Students and parents can refer to the Student Planner (p19-20) for further information.

Year 12

I’m Proud of You

The phrase everyone needs to hear, really needs to be heard this week. To teachers, Half Yearly Examinations are internal assessments to gauge student understanding. To many parents they are also an indication of progress and of reasonable expectations. To many students Half Yearly Examinations are the biggest, longest, most stressful gateways to their future. They threaten to expose their mistakes, draw on their weaknesses and rule out future opportunities. Although this is not the case, we can’t always expect students to be able to see things in context when they have only experienced a fraction of the journey. ‘I’m proud of you’ is a powerful phrase that can balance self-pressure by strengthening self-worth.

Tutor Meeting

During our Professional Development Day, our Yr 12 Pastoral Team welcomed back Kim Hurley from Long Service Leave and reflected on our progress so far. We reviewed the student goals that were set at the start of the year and celebrated the achievements of many students who stayed focussed and put their words into action throughout Term 1. We also reviewed student involvement in the community, commitment to activities, effort in classes, academic progress, examples of empathy and gratitude. We are very proud of the Year Group and their resilience throughout a very long and challenging term. During Term 2, Tutors will meet with each individual student to reflect, acknowledge growth and plan for the term ahead.

Community Focus

Thank you to Maxime Dupont and Georgina Joyce who came to the aid of a man who had collapsed near the bus stop on Military Road after school last term. They talked to the man to reassure him and called over Mr Gray to assist. Maxime sought our School Nurse, Ms Macken, while Georgina stayed to comfort the man who turned out to be a Redlander from the Class of 2007. Ms Scott who was also on the scene said, ‘it was a privilege to witness their efforts to care for the man, they were genuinely concerned and managed the situation well.’

Examination Illness and Misadventure

Any issues concerning illness or misadventure throughout the examination period should be directed to the appropriate Dean as soon as possible. This to ensure students meet IB and NESA requirements.

Year 11

Welcome back to Term 2! I hope all our students and their families had a relaxing holiday break.  I am very happy to see our students are well presented in their Winter uniform looking refreshed and reinvigorated. Our girls also seem to be enjoying the navy tights for the first time in their Secondary schooling.

This nine week term is a relatively short one but filled with various assessments, sport events and extra-curricular activities. During Pastoral Care time this week, students had the opportunity to reflect on their individual Approaches to Learning Reports from Term 1 and also underwent goal setting activities for Term 2.

As the Year Group continues to grow into more mature and independent young adults, I would like to challenge each of them to raise specific strategies after identifying key areas for improvement. If there are discrepancies between student’s self-grading and teacher grading, students are encouraged to contact their specific teacher for explanation and clarification. Hopefully, this approach will continually foster a positive thinking culture among Yr 11 students and will further develop learner autonomy, analytical thinking and increase effective communication from a Pastoral Care perspective.

Tanzania Trip Participant Trek Training Day

The Trek and Travel Day is an opportunity for the Tanzania trip participants to meet and work with their Antipodeans Leader for the first time. The students will be trained in leadership groups and travel around the city as if they were travelling in Tanzania. There will be all the protocols and procedures which will be in place when they visit in Tanzania. The team will have training around risk management and will begin a working relationship with their teachers and Antipodeans Leader. I would like to thank Ms Shorter and Mr Ellis in advance for accompanying students for this event and hope everyone will have a rewarding experience.

Yr 11 Red Shield Appeal

All students are invited to participate in another exciting Service opportunity – The Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal, which is an annual event supported by our Redlands Yr 11 students. The Door Knock Event will be held on Sunday 27 May. All participants will be gathering at school from 8am and then conducting the door knock around the streets near school in small groups of 3 – 4 students. The day will be concluded by a Sausage Sizzle back at the Senior Campus. Further information and details about the event will be announced next week during our Year Meeting.

Thank You

Earlier this week, Lachlan van der Pluijm, Chloe Woodward, Siddhant Saha, Kai Lin Tan and Josiah Tea offered their help and time to assist an after school event for the parents and community – Thinking Skills for Life. Their warm smiles and courteous manners certainly made a positive contribution to the success of the event.

Return to School – Uniforms

It seems the weather has cooled down just in time for our return to school in Winter uniform. Some girls’ skirt lengths need to be adjusted as they have grown over the last two terms. Tutors have made a note and will be in touch with families if uniforms need to be attended to. Please ensure that any items or adjustments are made by Week 2.

Arnhem Land Trip

We’ve heard amazing feedback from the Yr 10s who attended the Arnhem Land trip and look forward to hearing more about their stay in our upcoming Year Assembly.

Term 3 Pastoral Care Program

On Monday, our Tutors met with Yr 10 students to look over their Approach to Learning grades from both their teachers, and themselves, and set new academic and personal goals for Term 2. For the first few weeks of Tutor Time, our focus will be on Careers and Study Skills. The Yr 10 Half Yearly Examinations commence on Friday 18 May and a letter will be sent to parents with the Examination Timetable and all arrangements for students travelling to and from school. On Friday 25 May, following the examinations, Yr 10 students will participate in an Industry Day Excursion visiting several high profile corporate workplaces to learn more about the skills required in a working environment. Staffing Changes

It is with sadness that we say farewell to our Assistant Year Advisor Mr Ted Scott. Mr Scott has been a valued member of the Pastoral Leadership Team for the past five terms. In 2016, Mr Scott was the Tutor Teacher for Cowper Yellow and in 2017 accepted the role of Assistant Year Advisor. Mr Scott has been a valued colleague and friend. He has balanced his responsibilities as a teacher in the HSIE Faculty with his responsibilities for our Yr 9 students. I know that I speak on behalf of the Yr 9 students and the Yr 9 Tutors, when I say that he will be greatly missed. Mr Scott has accepted a teaching position at North Sydney Girls High School and we wish him every success for his new appointment which will begin in Week 3. An announcement of the new Assistant Year Advisor will be made in the coming weeks.

New Student

We warmly welcome new student Aaliya Naqvi to our Yr 9 group. I know that parents and students will make the Naqvi family welcome and that they will quickly become part of the fabric of our Redlands Community.

Yr 9 Camp

Yr 9 Camp is fast approaching. On Thursday during Period 4, students will have a final Camp Briefing. This will be facilitated by our external providers OEG. (The Outdoor Education Group). This will be an opportunity for students to ask any questions that they may have in relation to Camp next week.

The venue for the Curriculum Camp is at Wee Jasper, at the western foot of the Brindabella Ranges, which is 80km north west of Canberrra. Students will be engaged in hiking and canoeing activities, and sleeping under canvas each night. Students are in groups of approximately 15 students, accompanied by a Redlands staff member and a camp leader from OEG. Redlands have a long association with OEG and they are a highly professional organisation.

Buses will depart from Allister Street at the front gate of the Junior Campus and students must arrive no later than 6.30am on Monday 7 May. Please be advised that buses will not wait for any student who arrives late on that morning.

Buses will return to Military Road Cremorne at 3.20pm on Friday 11 May. Should parents wish to know the progress of the buses, our estimated arrival time will be updated on the Redlands Wet Weather Number: 9968 9899.

National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)

On Tuesday  15 May, Wednesday 16 May and Thursday 17 May,  students in Yrs 3, 5, 7 and 9 in all Australian Government, Catholic and Independent Schools will sit the annual National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). The NAPLAN examinations are designed to assess reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. Following the tests, all parents across Australia will receive results in a common reporting format.

All students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are expected to participate in NAPLAN testing but it is important for you and your child to know that NAPLAN is not a pass/fail test. It simply looks at what level students are achieving in literacy and numeracy against National Standards and compared with student peers throughout Australia. A letter to Parents (Years 3, 5, 7 and 9) from the Head of Teaching and Learning (P-12) will come home on Friday with further details. In addition, parents can access information on the National Assessment Program website.

Year 8

Welcome Back

I welcome back our Yr 8 students from their holidays and hope that they are returning refreshed and rejuvenated. A reminder that students are now in their Winter uniform, and that blazers are a mandatory part of the uniform during Terms 2-3.

Holiday Activities

A number of our students had a very busy break indeed, with students travelling on the Japan and China trips. I hope that these students had a wonderful experience and that this enriched their understanding of the culture and language of these countries. It was wonderful to see some photos and videos of Yr 8 students on these trips during our staff meeting at the beginning of this week.

Ella Delaney, Zac Nisbet and Ben Harrington spent time in the Hunter Valley over the holidays mentoring students from Scone Grammar School on sailing, rigging and racing. We thank these students for this service to their sport!

ANZAC Service

On Tuesday, the Secondary School had our annual ANZAC Service in Dunnet Hall. This was a lovely occasion of reflection and commemoration, and our guest speaker was a Yr 8 parent, Lieutenant Colonel Craig Delaney. Lieutenant Colonel Delaney spoke about his own experience as a soldier, and the way in which the values of the ANZACS, as well as the values of the Australian Defence Force more generally, are not only applicable to history and to the military, but to the everyday lives of our students. The values of loyalty, integrity, courage and teamwork are exactly the values Redlands tries to instill in our students, and they are as applicable now to students in class, on the sporting field, or at home, as they were for the ANZACs a century ago.

Yr 7 Pastoral Care Term 2

Welcome back to all Yr 7 students following the break. The focus for Pastoral Care in Term 2 is on developing strong personal habits. Students will reflect on progress in Term 1, meeting individually with their Tutor to discuss their Approach to Learning results and set personal goals for Term 2. Tutors will continue to assist with organisation (ie. use of Student Planners, lockers etc). Main events for Term 2 include NAPLAN testing, Athletics Carnival, Gala Arts and Semester 2 reports.

The goals of our program are to assist students with developing good personal habits which will establish strong foundations for their choices through high school and beyond. By the end of Term 2, students should be able to:

  1. Recognise how they can take responsibility for their choices and life.
  2. Define their personal mission and goals in life.
  3. Prioritise, and do the most important things first.
NAPLAN

NAPLAN takes place in Week 3. On Tuesday 15 May is Language Conventions and Writing. On Wednesday 16 May is Reading and on Thursday 17 May is Numeracy. The NAPLAN tests are designed to assess the skills of Australian students in literacy and numeracy. The specific purposes are:

  • to collect data from the population of Yrs 3, 5, 7 and 9 students for reporting to parents/carers and schools for systematic reporting
  • to accommodate the assessment of students against national minimum standards.

To participate fully and efficiently each student should bring the following equipment:

  • 2B or HB pencils – no mechanical pencils
  • An eraser
  • A sharpener
  • A calculator (for the Numeracy – Calculator allowed test)
  • A blue or black pen (for the Writing Task)

Information about the tests for parents and schools is available on the NAPLAN website.

Merits and Credit Points

Well done to the many Yr 7 students who received sporting Merits last term. Congratulations also to our many students who won a prize in our Star Awards draw during our final assembly in Term 1. A reminder that each Credit Point a student in Yr 7 receives equates to one entry in our Star Awards draw.

Achievements and Performances

Please notify your child’s Tutor, Ms Walker and me of any student achievements (academic/sporting/ performing arts etc) so that we are able to recognise them appropriately either in Note Day or our Year Assembly. If any student would like to perform a drama, debating, dance, musical item or speech at our fortnightly Year Assembly, they should contact me or Ms Walker. It is an excellent opportunity to build confidence and practise public performances.

Taldumande is a locally based youth crisis refuge that we have been working with to develop our understanding of youth homelessness. On Friday night this week, a small group of Redlands musicians will be performing at the Taldumande Gala Ball. Our musicians will be welcoming guests as they arrive to the event with some classical and jazz pieces. Additionally, the opening act for the evening will be an a cappella performance from our Jazz Choir. These students are generously giving up some of their Friday evening to help make this important fundraising event a success for Taldumande.

Smith Family Student2Student Reading

A training Session for Smith Family Student2Student Reading mentors was held this week. This is a much needed service offered to disadvantaged children across NSW. Redlands buddies are partnered with a young reader needing support and they meet virtually, twice a week for a short reading session. There are still opportunities for Redlands students in Yrs 9 – 11 to sign up to participate in this very valuable program. Past participants have discovered how rewarding it can be to help another.

Redlands Junior School Maths Club and Reading and Homework Club

Clubs are about to get underway. Both of these mentoring groups run throughout Terms 2 and 3 and involve Secondary students supporting a Junior School buddy every week on Wednesday afternoons. There are still places available for Secondary students in Yrs 9 – 11 to participate in the Reading and Homework Help Club.

Head of Junior School

It has been wonderful to welcome the students back for the start of Term 2 and I extend a warm welcome to every Junior School family, particularly our two new families.

While the students have been away this past fortnight, the School has remained a busy place with the major project being the complete re-carpeting of our Junior School Arnold Library and connected Learning Plus rooms. I acknowledge the tremendous efforts of our Facilities and Library teams to ensure that this significant development was completed in this timeframe, with the packing up and then re-shelving of c.35,000 books, a major task in itself! We then took delivery of a new suite of soft furniture for the Library, which has been delightful to see students and staff enjoying as both a learning and recreational space this week already.

In addition to this, our Visual Arts room upgrade has also taken place and the Campus gardens have been tended to with the Yr 4 and 5 eating areas having had artificial turf laid to allow students to sit there for lunch and at other times. We have also laid similar turf on the Yr 4 balconies which will allow the balconies to become extensions of their classroom learning spaces.

ANZAC Service

Last week, I was privileged to attend the poignant Mosman Dawn Service on ANZAC morning where Redlands Secondary students were invited to have speaking roles in the Service. It was also wonderful to see many of our families paying their respects and honouring our country’s servicemen.

This week, our term opened with our own ANZAC assembly as we remembered those who have served in conflict for others. We were delighted to welcome Lieutenant Colonel Craig Delaney ADF (retired), as our guest speaker and he spoke with great insight and connection to the students with a particular focus on some of the shared values of the Army and our own School Values.

Thinking Skills for Life Parent Symposium

The busy start to Term 2 continued on Tuesday evening as Redlands welcomed many parents to our inaugural Redlands Life-Ready Symposium with our guest speaker, Mark Church, co-author of Making Thinking Visible, part of the ongoing work of Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Mark and his colleague, Ron Ritchhart, have worked closely with us in helping guide Redlands over the last eighteen months towards building and nurturing a Culture of Thinking in our School environment, some of the learnings of which I have shared in previous Note Day editions.

As a School, Redlands aims to nurture a learning environment where thinking is a way of being and that students recognise that the active process of learning is a consequence of thinking and the two are as much a collective enterprise as they are individual endeavours. At Redlands, we also often reflect and analyse the dispositions that we hope will stay with our students long after they leave us also knowing that these cannot be taught in isolation; more that they have to be nurtured and grown over time. These habits will, in many ways, be of far greater benefit to our students than the content that is covered in their learning.

As parents, what could you do to also foster this mindset? The language that we use is an important factor and where home is using similar language to school, the potential for consolidation is increased significantly. One of the questions many teachers use to guide student thinking and enable evidence for their assertions is, “What makes you say that?” We also aim to use the word ‘learning’ instead of ‘work’ which can have more negative connotations attached to it. Giving students appropriate ‘wait’ or thinking time to respond to questions is also important as we all process information at differing speeds. Equally, evaluating our students not only by the answers they give but more by the questions they ask is becoming an increasingly significant aspect of our classrooms as we challenge our students to not only be problem solvers but problem finders too.

It was wonderful to see so many parents from Preschool – Yr 12 in the audience and I encourage all families to take a moment to also read pages 32 and 33 in the Student Planner, which also visually explains how we are creating a culture of thinking in our environment here. We look forward to continuing the conversation of this topic with families on this exciting learning journey for us all.

NSW Swimming Success

In the last couple of days of last term, Yr 6 student, Hannah Morton, competed with great determination and distinction again at the State Swimming Championships achieving gold medals in the freestyle with a personal best of 29.50 seconds and in the backstroke in a time of 33.65 seconds, which is a new NSW State record. Just to round things off, Hannah then picked up a silver medal in the 50m butterfly in a time of 31.93 seconds and now heads to the National Championships in July.

Brainstorm Productions

On Wednesday, our Junior School students enjoyed watching Buddies, a show focusing on social and emotional learning, in particular the skills of friendship, problem solving and self-management. Approved by the Office of the eSafety Commissioner, the performance also explored cyber safety and anti-bullying themes and was pitched at the students’ level and class teachers will follow up on aspects of the performance with their students to ensure that the messages help guide and shape their social and emotional learning development and personal values.

22nd Redlands Parents’ Art Prize and Cocktails Evening

Next Thursday 10 May, sees our annual Redlands Parents’ Art Prize and Cocktails Evening at the National Art School in Darlinghurst. This is an exclusive event for Redlands parents to view and experience the professional contemporary artworks with other Redlands parents over drinks and canapés and I look forward to enjoying the evening with many in our community.

With limited parking around the venue, it is possible to book return transport from the School and for more information and a short video, please visit our website. Please book here to join us for this event.

A Trek to Everest Base Camp

Whilst the majority of us used the break to rest and refresh, Alex Arnold (Yr 6) and Mrs Benneyworth took the opposite pathway and coincidentally both travelled to the same amazing destination of Everest Base Camp! At over 5,000 m altitude, the journey was both challenging and inspiring and this significant accomplishment is one that will also leave them a lifetime of memories. Well done to you both.

Walk Safely to School Day

The 19th annual Walk Safely to School Day initiative is on Friday 18 May. Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual, national event when all primary-aged children are encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a free community event seeking to promote road safety, health, public transport and the environment.

Students are encouraged to walk to school or as is more viable for many families, park further away from school and walk a short distance to school. Stickers can be collected from benches near the flagpole if you have walked to school, where some of our Yr 6 students will give them out.

National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)

On Tuesday  15 May, Wednesday 16 May and Thursday 17 May,  students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 in all Australian Government, Catholic and Independent Schools will sit the annual National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN).

Welcome Back

The beginning of a new term is a chance for students, staff and families to start fresh with enthusiasm and vitality after a restful break. The first morning saw the Piazza filled with excitement and chatter as students reunited after the holiday. Many were excited to share their holiday stories with their friends and teachers. In the first Assembly for the term, we welcomed our new students to the School and remembered ANZAC Day as a significant part of Australia’s history.  Students watched a clip to help understand the importance of this national day and its role in building peace in communities today. It was evident that many of the students already had a comprehensive understanding of the ANZAC’s and the reason we mark the 25 April as a day of remembrance.

I would like to extend a welcome to the families joining Redlands Preparatory this term and trust that your school journey will provide fulfilment and happiness as you explore our wonderful community.

Professional Learning

On the Monday before school began for Term 2, Redlands staff had the opportunity to learn together in various professional groups and consequently heard from guest speaker, Dr Helena Popovic. Preferring education over medication, Dr Popovic is an expert on brain function and, more specifically, neuroplasticity. Interestingly, the brain has the amazing ability to change its own structure, grow new cells and establish new pathways at ANY AGE! In the right environment, with practice, effort and encouragement any student can grasp new skills. She further reminded everyone about the importance of self-care and the impact nutrition has on one’s life.

Staff also welcomed back Mark Church from the Making Thinking Visible and Cultures of Thinking teams at Project Zero, a research group within the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Mark has been working with Redlands for some time, taking staff through various initiatives and principles relating to a Culture of Thinking. On this occasion, Mark facilitated a Learning Walk, where some Secondary staff toured through the Prep and Junior classrooms, identifying how the Cultural Forces and Visible Thinking Routines play a part in learning on the Junior Campus. This professional sharing of practice plays a fundamental role in staff development and this certainly rang true with the feedback received from the Secondary staff. Prep and Junior staff are looking forward to the reciprocated version of this in the latter half of the year, when they tour the Senior Campus. The evening session with Mark was devoted to the parent community, an inaugural event for the School, Thinking Skills for Life. He began the session asking parents what they dream of for their children when they become adults. Happiness, resilience, determination, life-readiness, and curiosity were some dispositions that were mentioned by parents. It was acknowledged that skills alone were not enough to succeed in the future workplace. The residuals of education are the social, work and thinking dispositions, they transcend the curriculum and form an integral part of the learning that Redlands is embedding into its culture.

Get Caught Reading Month

Did you know that May is Get Caught Reading Month? It’s such a fun concept! This initiative is a campaign to promote the excitement of reading books for all ages. As a Prep School we will be celebrating this in some small ways in the classroom. Teachers often remind their students that there are a lot of people who gain great pleasure from reading.

Mother’s Day Morning

The Junior Campus will be holding a Mother’s Day Celebration on Monday 14 May, beginning at 7.45am. This year our mothers will be spoiled with breakfast treats followed by an exciting morning of activities in the Kindergarten, Yr 1 and 2 classrooms. We look forward to sharing this special day with you.

Parking Reminder

For families new to the School, please be aware that there is No Parking outside of the Prep or Junior School buildings between 7.30-9.00am and 2.30-4.00pm. This zone must be kept clear to allow both car lines to operate efficiently. Junior School parents have also been asked to arrive closer to their 3.20pm end of school day or slightly after, as some arrive earlier and park in the No Parking zone.

There will be teachers on duty from 2.45pm daily to assist with the car line process and keep all members of the community safe.

Prep Clubs

Clubs begin on Wednesday 9 May and finish on Wednesday 20 June from 3-4pm.

All students whose parents completed the enrolment permission form in Term 1 for Clubs were placed in their choice of Clubs for the year. Parents were notified of Club placements for the year at the beginning of Term 1.

If your child’s schedule has changed and you are not going to be able to commit to your enrolled Club during any term of the year, please notify Miss Oxley as we have students on a wait list who would like to be considered, if any vacancies arise.

Collecting Charity

Last term, our Prep School charity raised $535 to buy toiletries for people experiencing homelessness. This term our charity focus is the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

“Being able to read opens so many doors. In very remote Indigenous communities, books are all too scarce and literacy levels are so much lower than anywhere else in Australia. The Indigenous Literacy Foundation’s mission is to make a difference to the lives of Indigenous families by not only gifting thousands of new culturally appropriate books – with a focus on early literacy and first language – but also by running programs to inspire the communities to tell and publish their own stories.”

You can read more about this organisation and what they do here. If you would like to contribute, we collect for charity every Monday during Assembly.

Redlands House/Transition Gold

Redlands House and Transition Gold

Welcome from Mrs Huon

Welcome back to Term 2! I hope you all had an enjoyable holiday break. To our new families commencing at Redlands House this term, welcome and we look forward to your involvement in the Preschool program. Please welcome the following students and their families to Redlands House:
Andre Cappadona – Orange Class Juniors, Philippa Dudley – Blue Class Juniors, Chloe Pickhaver – Blue Class Juniors, Kirav Raman – Blue Class Seniors, Richard Li – Yellow Class Seniors and Sienna Lepone – Yellow Class Seniors

If any questions or concerns arise this term, please feel free to contact me on chuon@redlands.nsw.edu.au or come and see me when you are next in the Preschool.

I look forward to an exciting journey of learning with the children in Term 2!

Mother’s Day Morning

Redlands House will be holding a Mother’s Day Celebration on Monday 14 May, beginning at 10.00am with classroom activities, followed by a shared morning tea outside in the playground. We look forward to sharing this morning with you and please feel free to bring a picnic rug or fold up chair for your comfort.

Transition 2019 Information Session

An information session will be held in the Transition Gold classroom, on the Prep Campus adjacent to the Canteen on Wednesday 9 May at 3pm. This session will be of interest for any parents considering the Transition class for 2019. If you are unsure of the details of the Transition Program, please talk to Mrs Huon.

Transition Uniform – OPTIONAL

We would like to offer the Transition students the opportunity to wear their sports uniform (yellow shirt and blue shorts, with tracksuit if cold) to school on any day. We understand that while they are excited to wear their grown-up uniform, the size can still be a little large for some and difficult to negotiate when going to the bathroom.

Allergy Awareness

Just a reminder to our families when packing food for your child(ren) that we are an ‘allergy aware Preschool’. We have a number of children enrolled who are anaphylactic to all types of nuts, egg and seafood. With regards to the egg allergies, egg can be an ingredient cooked into foods, but cannot be sent to Preschool boiled alone or included in a sandwich, wrap or similar. Please see your class teacher if you have any questions.

Holiday Surprise

Eloise Dagg, a Redlands House student, proudly presented the School with a beautiful painting on canvas, Pink, during the school holidays. A very talented young lady, Eloise has been drawing since she was one and painting on canvas since she was three years of age. When she was three and a half, she completed her first notable canvas of a rocket taking off into space. Already at this age she was demonstrating a deep understanding of patterns, symmetry, use of colour and purpose. Eloise’s obvious dedication and love of painting is evident to all. She paints at home using an easel, acrylic paints and a variety of brushes, scrapers and colour mixing plates, whilst listening to different genres of music, including classical. When she was four, her passion for art increased after a visit to the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

As the School continues its focus on a culture of thinking, Eloise’s artwork is an example of the importance of focussing on the learning and the process, not just the finished piece of work. Paying attention to your child’s learning passions outside of school is important and should be pursued. Role modelling your own interests, curiosity, reflection, learning and thinking is another significant way in which children can grow. Lev Vgotsky, a Russian psychologist, said “Children grow into the intellectual life around them”. A sincere thank you to Eloise who decided that her first artwork she gave away would be to the School. I am very grateful and proud to have it hanging in my office.

Secondary Sport

Redlands Rhino – Weekly Fixtures

From the Head of Sport

Over the recent holiday break, we conducted a Winter Sport pre-season camp for our highest-level representative teams across Football, Netball and Rugby at the NSW Sport and Recreation facility in Berry. This was a fantastic opportunity for our students and coaches in these teams to enhance the skills and team structures of play in an intensified live-in training environment. I was very impressed with all of our students who all pushed themselves throughout the four days physically and mentally, especially our Yr 12 students who completed all the trainings and up to or over six hours of study each day. Some highlights included the morning running sessions through the paddocks and hills of the property, the moment of quiet reflection on top of the hill at dawn on ANZAC Day and the fun interaction shared between our Sports staff and students. I would like to thank all of the coaches and staff who attended for the dedication and commitment to the Redlands Sports program.

Sailing

On the first weekend of the school holidays, Ben Harrington, Ella Delaney, Zac Nisbett, and Mia, Liam and Ethan McFarlane headed up to Scone for two days of Cadet Sailing experience. They were not sure what to expect when they got to Scone as they were sailing on three old restored boats on an unknown piece of water. On arrival in a strong 20 knot breeze on Lake Glenbawn, they were greeted by Mr Colin Selwood and Mr Paul Smart (Principal at Scone Grammar), a couple of other parents, and 13 keen Scone Grammar students. Most did not have much sailing knowledge, but they were eager to get on the water. The three skippers, Ben, Ella, and Zac, along with some of the Redlands parents, worked with the kids on rigging the boats and understanding their operation. The skippers and Colin then let the kids take turns crewing in the boats in fairly blustery conditions. The wind didn’t let up over the entire two days, which made for some exciting beginner sailing for the students from Scone.

It was a great opportunity for our students to meet like-minded individuals with a keen interest in Sailing in rural NSW.

Surf Life Saving

Congratulations to Olivia Donoghue (Yr 9) who competed in the National Surf Life Saving Championships during the holidays. Liv finished 15th overall in the open water swim in what were some tough conditions.

Winter Sport

Winter Sports are now in full swing. Students and parents are reminded that training schedules are available on Redlands Pulse. If students are going to be absent from any training sessions or Saturday fixtures, please let your respective Sports Administrators know, the earlier better. Injured students are still required to attend training to support and assist their team and coaches where possible. They are also encouraged to attend all home fixtures to support their team. It would be great to see as many students as possible out supporting out respective 1st teams.

Junior Sport

NSNA Netball

Our Netball teams have done a fantastic job of scrambling and filling all positions on the last day of last term. Thanks to everyone who played up and across or hung around to help another Redlands team. We were one of very few clubs who didn’t forfeit any matches on that last night. Moving forward, NSNA Round 3 is this Friday and it’s often this stage of the season where we really begin to see some leaps and bounds of improvement in our teamwork and passing. I can’t wait. All of our Round 3 fixtures are as per the NSNA draw except Redlands 12 whose opposition have forfeited.

IPSHA Winter Sports Draw

The Winter sports draw for Football, Rugby, AFL and Hockey is here. Teams are finalised and, along with a copy of the draw, has been emailed to all players. Matches start this weekend and it’s a big one at our home fields at Macquarie University with all of our Junior School Football teams and the reignited Rugby program playing there throughout the morning. The draw is also available for all Rugby, Rugby Sevens, AFL, Football and Hockey Teams on Redlands Pulse.

Cross Country Carnival

Students have been training hard in their PE classes for the Redlands annual Cross Country Carnival which takes place next Friday 11 May at Macquarie University Playing fields. This year’s Carnival will feature our regular age races, a 2km fun run and a host of relays in what has become a day very much looked forward to across the School. Students attend school at regular time and are then transported by bus to the course. Students may wear House colours to the event. Please complete the online permission for Friday and if any parents are interested in assisting with on course supervision please contact juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au. You can be guaranteed a comfortable spot, close to the action.

Paul Kelly Cup AFL

Finally, after two rainouts in Term 1 the Paul Kelly Cup will take place next Tuesday at ELS Hall North Ryde. Redlands is entering a record breaking six teams with over 80 students keen to attend. Three Boys teams and three Girls teams will have some fun, play 3-4 games of modified Australian Football and try to win their way through to the next round. Students should attend school at normal time in PE uniform, bring boots and mouthguard, sunscreen and food and water for the day. Online permission for this event needs to be completed before Tuesday.

CIS Tennis

Best of luck to Stella Simpson-Morgan who heads off to Albury next week to compete in the NSWPSSA Tennis Championships for CIS. We look forward to bringing you some tales of Stella’s progress in the Championships.

Holiday Sports Clinics

We had some great numbers and some serious talent on show throughout the last holiday break, with Football and Netball camps held on the Junior Campus. With over 25 students at each camp, skills rapidly improved and our coaches were really impressed at the approach of our kids, who showed real dedication and determination to develop their craft over the multi-day camps.

Music

Music Festival Season

As we approach the Winter season, students on the Junior Campus and Senior Campus will be honing their musical skills and preparing a wide range of repertoire in readiness for the Junior Music Festival (August), Senior Music Festival (June) and HICES Music Festival (August). We welcome the School community to be part of these wonderful concerts, so please place the dates into your diaries, as listed on Redlands Pulse

Senior Music Festival – Bach to the Beatles

Redlands has the pleasure in announcing the annual Senior Music Festival Bach to the Beatles, a concert showcasing the talents of various soloists, instrumental and choral ensembles. As a thematic feature of the 2018 Senior Music Festival, students have been exploring the melodious and harmonious music of The Beatles. With Popular Music of the 1960s representing new and exciting sounds, undoubtedly, The Beatles were innovators in changing the face of Rock Music, producing music that was not only influential within its industry but was also a cultural driving force for social change. As a traditional conclusion to the Festival, all students in the Music program will perform as part of the Yr 12 Finale in a massed performance, presenting various well-loved Beatles tunes through song and dance. Tickets go on sale this Monday 7 May (Week 2) through www.theconcourse.com.au

Anzac Day Service

In commemorating Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations, the Advanced Concert Band and Choir presented the music elements at the ANZAC Day Service on Tuesday 1 May. This Service was held in Dunnet Hall and featured a work titled Proud Echoes, composed and conducted by our Redlands Conductor, Mr Phillip Anderson. Written to commemorate the loss of HMAS PERTH in the Battle of Sunda Strait, 1942, this work featured the actual bugle that was dedicated to Able Seaman Jim Nelson, HMAS Perth’s first bugler. As part of his duties, while playing the Last Post and Reveille during thirteen sea burials of his shipmates after enemy attack in the Mediterranean, Jim Nelson recalls:

‘As the bodies were committed to the sea, I had to sound the Last Post and Reveille. When the Chaplain nodded to me to sound off I was overcome with emotion, my lips went dry and for a moment I could not raise a note. I closed my eyes and by mind transportation took myself away from the ship and played as if I were back in harbour at a routine Sunset. I played as I had never played before. Every feeling in my body went through that instrument. I made the strident bugle tones as mellow and sweet as I could and lost myself in the production. I am only nineteen years old!  What is expected of me? How much more can I give?’

The actual bugle dedicated to the life of Able Seaman Jim Nelson, who passed away in 1945, was borrowed from the Royal Australian Navy for this particular event and was played by Mr Jon Gray, making this a very special moment during the times of musical reflection. Thank you to all staff and students for their wonderful contributions to commence the school term and in honouring the lives of all Australian and New Zealand soldiers.

Senior Music Festival Auditions – Bach to the Beatles
