Issue 11 2024 Term 1 Week 11 - 11 Apr 2024

From the Principal

On Tuesday we held International Day, and it is always one of my favourite days on the Redlands calendar as we recognise and celebrate the over 50 nationalities that comprise our student body. Diversity and inclusivity are two key tenets of our School’s Mission and International Day helps to further highlight these.

As an Irish-American, I appreciate the importance of cultural diversity and every year on International Day this is brought home for me, either walking under the dozens of different flags hanging above Liggins Quad on the Senior Campus or seeing the often colourful cultural attire of students on the Junior Campus.

At Redlands I believe we are both an international school for Australian students and an Australian school for international students and having a diversity of backgrounds, cultures and perspectives strengthens all of us.

Despite the far-reaching impacts of globalisation which can immediately bring the world into the palm of our hand, unfortunately, we are also increasingly retreating into our isolated bubbles of information and echo chambers of ideas where we can easily not hear nor see differences. International Day reminds us that it is important to keep hearing, seeing and valuing our differences.

This year I was not on campus for International Day as I was attending an educational conference. However, one of the sessions from my conference on Tuesday focused on the increasing importance of “cultural intelligence” in the workplace and the need for schools to prepare our future employees and industry leaders to understand, remain adaptable to and thrive in differing cultural environments.

With this in mind, while historically schools have focused on IQ – intelligence quotient, and more recently they have also focused on EQ – emotional quotient (emotional intelligence), a future focus should be on developing students’ CQ – cultural quotient (cultural intelligence) to best ensure students are truly life ready for this world.

International Day illustrates one example of how we are already developing our students’ “CQ” at Redlands.

Reflecting back on Term 1, it has been a great start to the year, with a vast array of events and activities which have allowed students to shine in so many different ways. One of my personal highlights was when a fellow principal who was visiting the School a few weeks ago remarked to me when walking around the Senior Campus, “it really seems like a happy school”. I was chuffed to hear this reflection as it aligns with my regular observations this term, as well.

Last Friday evening, we were delighted to welcome over 250 Alumni for the All Years Alumni Reunion to celebrate our 140 Year anniversary, along with the milestone reunions for the Classes of 1984, 1994, 1999, 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019.  As I said in my address: The heart and soul of Redlands remains the same…the culture that you helped to cultivate and grow continues to stay strong here today and this can be seen in this short video.

Thank you to the Redlanders Alumni Association President Natalie Davies, RL 1987, and Alumni and Community Coordinator Kim Flatman, RL 1991, for bringing our Alumni community together for this wonderful celebration. You can read more about the evening in the Foundation section of Note Day.

I hope all students have a wonderful break, and I look forward to seeing them return back to campus refreshed and ready for Term 2 on Tuesday 30 April.

Secondary Sport

Accountability in team sports is crucial as it fosters trust, cohesion, and ultimately, success. As Michael Jordan famously said, “Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships.” When each player takes responsibility for their actions and performance, the entire team benefits. This accountability extends beyond the field or court; it encompasses preparation, discipline, and commitment to the team’s goals.

A team player embodies characteristics such as selflessness, dedication, and resilience. Accountability inspires greatness, pushing individuals to strive for excellence not just for themselves but for the entire team.

Our coaches play a pivotal role in fostering a culture of accountability within their teams. Here are several strategies they can employ:

  • Set clear expectations: Establish clear standards of behaviour, performance and conduct from the outset. Ensure that every team member understands their role and responsibilities within the team.
  • Lead by example: Coaches must model the behaviour they expect from their players. Demonstrating accountability in their own actions and decisions sets a powerful example for the team to follow.
  • Provide feedback: Regular feedback, both positive and constructive, helps players understand where they stand and how they can improve. Encourage open communication and dialogue between coaches and players to address any issues or concerns.
  • Encourage ownership: Empower players to take ownership of their actions and performance. Encourage them to set personal goals and hold themselves accountable for achieving them.
  • Foster teamwork: Emphasise the importance of teamwork and collaboration. Encourage players to support and hold each other accountable, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared responsibility.
  • Establish consequences: Clearly communicate the consequences of not meeting expectations or failing to uphold team standards. Consistently enforce these consequences to reinforce accountability.
  • Celebrate success: Acknowledge and celebrate individual and team achievements. Positive reinforcement reinforces accountability and motivates players to continue striving for excellence.

By implementing these strategies, coaches can create a culture of accountability that empowers players to take ownership of their actions and performance, ultimately leading to greater success on and off the field

“Don’t measure yourself by what you have accomplished, but by what you should have accomplished with your ability.”

John Wooden

General Sport Information

Fixtures

  • All student training and fixture details will be available to families under My Schedule on Redlands Pulse. Additionally, the weekly Fixtures (The Redlands Rhino) can be found on the Secondary School Sport page on Redlands Pulse from Wednesday each week. Please ensure you check Redlands Pulse Friday afternoon to ensure you have the latest fixture information.

Uniform

  • The Redlands sports uniform should be worn to all trainings and matches (students are not permitted to wear any non-Redlands branded clothing). In the event of inclement weather students should wear their Redlands fleece or sports tracksuit.
  • Students must wear trainer style sneakers that are preferably white with non-marking soles. It is part of our shared responsibility to ensure that students wear footwear that aligns with the activity to be undertaken. High top sneakers, Vans, Converse etc. are not appropriate for School Sport.

Saturday Sport Absences

  • Parents are required to log an absence via Clipboard prior to missing any training session.
  • Any student unable to attend a Saturday fixture due to illness, is required to submit a Medical Certificate to their Sports administrator by the Monday morning following the missed fixture.
  • Injured students are required to attend all training sessions and Saturday fixtures.
  • Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards and result in school disciplinary action.
  • Please refer to the Student Planner 2024 for full details on requirements for participating in a Representative Sport.
  • Bus Transport
    • When travelling on Redlands transport the Redlands school rules are in place and students should be always upholding the values of the school:
  • Have good behaviour, safe behaviour and appropriate language at all times.
  • Follow the driver (and supervising staff) instructions at all times.
  • Obey the transport rules and regulations at all times (seat belts must be worn at all times).
  • Leave the bus how they found it (no rubbish, no mess).

Students who fail to meet the standards of the above will face school disciplinary action.

Wet Weather

  • We have been lucky enough to have a relatively dry winter and to start the summer season, we use a number of fields that are multi-purpose and all weather.
  • Unless communicated differently or in the morning of the session (via Redlands Pulse & Clipboard), all training sessions are to be deemed ‘on’.
  • Students should bring with them a change of Redlands Sport Uniform (Thursdays only) or their school uniform (Tuesday) if there are light showers during training.

Community Update

It was a pleasure to welcome our Alumni community of Redlanders back to School late last week where School memories and reconnections were shared by those attending this all alumni event celebrating the School’s 140th year of operation.

Within the celebration, Redlander Jane Bianchini (RL 1990) received her 2023 Redlander Alumni Award.  Jane was unable to attend the ceremony last year and was delighted to accept the award in person at this event. The Redlander Alumni Awards recognise and celebrate significant local and global achievements of the alumni community over many years, and across a number of fields of endeavour.  Jane has held senior executive and Board positions across both large public and small private companies, leading high performing successful organisations, recruiting technology and sales professionals across Asia Pacific. Jane created a world first, diversity, equity and Inclusion platform within her business that leap-frogged all of her global competitors, resulting in her securing many notable clients including NBC Universal globally, NZ Police, L’Oréal, Australian Prime Minister’s Office and Cabinet and Allianz, to name a few.

Our alumni can be found locally and globally and we continue to ensure the important connections with our community are nurtured and developed through Redlands dedicated alumni engagement program that includes interstate and international reunions and networking opportunities along with other special events and a quarterly newsletter. We greatly value the relationships we have with our Alumni and our aim is to support a lifelong connection to the School.  For more information and photos from our All Alumni Reunions, check out the Foundation section in today’s Note Day.

Our Junior School Captains have had an extremely busy term and this will continue into the holidays in support of the Wayside Chapel. Wayside Chapel, like many charitable organisations, seek donations from those that are able to assist in supporting those in need. Our Junior School Captains seek our support in the donation of single use toiletries (shampoo, body wash, toothbrushes and toothpaste, soap, etc) which are provided to people who visit the Wayside Chapel to have showers, brush their teeth and get changed into some clean clothes. With many of our families on the move this term break, we are asking you to consider collecting these items where possible in your travels. Collected items can be left with the Reception teams at the Prep and Junior Schools at the beginning of Term 2.  Thank you for your consideration and support of our Junior School Captains.

With the end of another term in sight, the Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA), Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) and FoGs continue to actively bring our various groups together both socially and operationally. A number of end of term and term break events still remain in the calendar and these can be found here.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

The Community Engagement team wish you a happy, healthy and peaceful term break with your family.

All Alumni 140 Year Celebration

Even the torrential rain and stormy winds could not keep our community away from the All Alumni 140 Year Celebration which took place on last Friday evening in Redlands Hall.  We were thrilled to meet with almost 250 guests across seven milestone reunions (Classes of 1984, 1994, 1999, 2004, 2009, 2014, and 2019) and Redlanders from other year groups ranging from 1962 to the most recent graduates.

Guest enjoyed listening to the Redlander Jazz Band (Tamis Hunter, Zac Nesbit and Austin Stapleton all Redlanders from the Class of 2022) and the historical display showcasing rich history including an evolution of school uniform prepared by Archives team Marguerite Gillezeau and Romy Oesterheld,

Special thanks to the Redlanders Alumni Association Committee Members including President and current parent Natalie Davies RL 1987, Alumni Award Recipient and Past Parent Jane Bianchini RL 1990 and Kim Flatman, Redlands Alumni and Community Coordinator.

Alumni Update: Finn Cottee Redlander 2015

Enormous thanks to Finn Cottee RL 2015 who came back and presented to Year 11 and 12 students interested in Engineering on the role of AI and his career as a product manager with Medtronic, a ground breaking health care technology firm. Finn’s work focuses on Neurovascular devices for stroke and aneurysms.

He talked about how he came to study Engineering, various pathways and what students can expect at university should they decide they would like to pursue tertiary studies in this this field. He appreciated the flexibility in his first year and learnt about various fields and then decided where to focus.

Finn holds a Bachelor of Engineering Honours (Biomedical Engineering) and Mechanical Engineering from the University of Sydney.

Redlands Parents and Friends

Term 1 is a wrap! Hope you all have your holiday fun – and survival plans – sorted. If you have time over the next two weeks to do some planning, mark your calendars with the many Term 2 events already locked in. Find them listed below.

With colder weather already creeping in, the Second Hand Uniform Sale this Friday morning is a fantastic opportunity to grab some extra jumpers and fleeces.

When: Friday 12 April, 8am-10.30am.

Where: RPFA Unit, 1 Monford Place, Cremorne (just around the corner from the Uniform Shop).

Our Second Hand Uniform Sales provide great value for families and also give each of us an opportunity to contribute to the clear benefits of recycling. We sell hundreds of perfectly good clothes that may otherwise end up being wasted and thrown out, eventually into landfill. The Second Hand Uniform Sales are a great way to make the most of what the world has already produced, help your wallet and do an extra little bit for sustainability as well. As always, funds raised are contributed towards the means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund.

With ANZAC Day falling at the end of our school holiday break (25 April) we would like to take this opportunity to share a heartfelt thank you to all current serving members, veterans and Defence families across our community for their service and sacrifice. Lest We Forget.

Safe travels and happy days everyone!

To bring this amazing occasion to life, we are calling on as many in our community as possible to volunteer. Please let us know if you would like to be involved on the organising committee. Contact us!

Book Club

The Redlands Book Club is a group of Redlands parents – past and present – who share a love of reading. New members are always welcome! The Book Club meets twice each school term to discuss a book, rotating among members’ homes. Occasionally, outings are also organised to events, movies or shows that are tied in with books, including annual attendance at the Sydney Writer’s festival in May. If you would like to join Book Club, or simply want to know more, please contact Monica or Sabiha.

Behind the Scenes with the RPFA: Meet your Class Parents

A wonderful group of volunteers, Class Parents are in place from Redlands House all the way up to Yr 12. Their efforts in welcoming new parents, organising teacher celebrations and facilitating class social events go a long way in maintaining the connected and engaged school community we enjoy here at Redlands.

Check back here each week to meet 2024 Class Parents and be inspired for how you can get involved!

CP Five

The Basics

Name: Karalee Fielding

Role/Class: 3WONDERFUL Class Parent

Kiddos:  Harper (boy) Year 6, Leopold (boy) Year 3, Ella (girl) Year 1

If you could choose a RPFA theme song (or super hero), what would be the title name?

What’s the name of the Circus theme song? 🙂 That would be it.

Why did you decide to become a Class Parent, and what do you love most about it?

Mayumi and Jen are fairly persuasive… haha. In reality, I find being a Class Parent one of the most practical and wonderful ways to not only get to know your child’s teacher, but to get to know their friends and the families represented in that Year Group.  We started at Redlands during the pandemic and it took me a long time to find ‘my people’ given there was hardly any ‘in person’ interaction. You know, the other parents you can count on for a last minute carline pick up, or reminder about mufti day. It was invaluable when I did. So, I’d love to be that for other people!

What advice would you give to a parent or carer looking to get more involved in the School?

Tell your Class Parent! Let them know you will make yourself available for the next excursion, or in class helping role. The library is always looking for volunteers, there are books to be covered, pencils to be sharpened – grab a friend and let your teacher know you’ve got an hour to pitch in! Also – try to come to one of the events put on by parents during the term. Don’t be intimidated if you don’t know anyone – there will always be a friendly face!

If you could trade places with your children for a day, what would you most want to experience?

Ooh.. where to begin? I’d love to sit in on Mrs Mac’s famous reading hour, hear one of Mr Holden’s assembly talks, or attend chapel. Also, the Wednesday afternoon sport options are certainly more exciting than when I was growing up… surfing, sailing and paddle boarding!? Our kids are so lucky.

Do you have pictures of parent / family get-togethers you want to share?

Please send them to RPFA Note Day.

Head of Secondary School

As we conclude the term, I offer thanks to the entire community for such a joyful and productive term. Whilst it has been a marathon of a term, the optimism and energy of the students, staff and parents has been sustaining and created an authentic sense of belonging across the Senior Campus. A few highlights of the term for me have been the students’ diligent application to learning, reflected in the enhanced use of the Roseby Library as a study space from 3.30-7.00pm, the Year 12 Study Centre which is seeing approximately 80 students each afternoon and the students who have made a commitment to themselves and their learning via membership of the Illuminate Scholars program.

Illuminate Scholars Program

Our Illuminate Scholars Program has been going from strength to strength. The following video provides an overview of the benefits of the program and introduces you to one of our two Illuminate Learning Coordinators, Grace Bracks, Class of 2020, and some of the Academic Coaches.

Bookings are now open for Term 2, and you can book either a Day Pass or Term Pass for your child/ren via the QR codes at the end of the video or via the links below.

Moonbah Program

Another rewarding highlight for me this term has been witnessing the development of the Moonbah Program for Year 9 students in 2025. The Community of Design presented the draft program to the Community of Engagement on Monday afternoon, seeking feedback on the core curriculum pillars across Service Learning, Environmental Learning, Social and Emotional Learning and First Nations Learning. See below our Secondary School Academic Staff in deep discussion.

Early next term we look forward to running a week-long pilot of our Moonbah Program with a group of Year 8 students and teachers. More exciting updates to come in Term 2!

Learning About Learning

Our Secondary School Dean of Studies (7-10), Ms Anna Rolon, has been immersing herself in the diverse and enriching learning experiences across the campus over the past few weeks. She has been joining Faculty Meetings and hearing from subject teachers and coordinators about how they design and develop a range of learning experiences for Stage 4 and 5 students. She has also been shadowing classes across the campus, with a special focus this week on 9R, spending time with this group of students in several of their core classes.

Ms Rolon described how wonderful it was to witness such a dynamic and diverse range of learning happening for 9R. Students had a lot of fun experimenting with fractured sonnets in Ms Peschardt’s English class; participated in informative and mature discussions around consent education in Ms Berkeley’s PDHPE class and learnt many interesting facts and applied critical thinking skills around Communist China in Mr Skinner’s History class. Whilst the learning and the range of activities were interesting and varied, the real highlight was the brilliant students of 9R! Their enthusiasm, maturity, and eagerness to dive into learning was on full display as they inclusively welcomed Ms Rolon into their lessons across the course of this week. Mr Rolon was pleased to issue a number of Recognition of Growth RADS for their efforts.  As we move into another rich term of learning after the holidays, Ms Rolon looks forward to shadowing more Stage 4 and 5 classes and sharing her experiences with the community.

The Ethics Centre Writing Competition

Congratulations to Year 11 student Sophie Yu, who won a Highly Commended award (13-17 years) in The Ethics Centre’s inaugural Young Writers’ Competition. Introduced to the competition in the Term 4 2023 Christian Studies program, Sophie submitted her essay “I changed my mind about prisons,” and received praise and recognition from the judges for making a thought-provoking case for restorative justice. Drawing on research of best practice in the Norwegian justice system, Sophie presented as evidence-based argument for more humane methods of rehabilitation and community integration. Thank you to our hardworking Christian Studies staff – Ms Philips, Ms Tymoszuk and Ms Wilson – as well as Dr Poon (High Potential Learning Coordinator, 7-12), for supporting Sophie and all Year 10 students in Christian Studies lessons to compose their essays. Please click here to read Sophie’s submission. Looking ahead, we encourage all students to consider entering these upcoming writing competitions:

The Nan Manefield Young Writers’ Award – deadline: 14 April 2024

The Whitlam Institute What Matters? Competition (fiction, non-fiction, prose or poetry) – deadline: 17 May 2024

Mosman Youth Awards in Literature (prose and poetry) – deadline: 31 May 2024

2024 North Sydney Council Community Award

Last year a group of students started a club to visit the Bougainvillea Retirement Village during lunchtimes to interact with the residents.

The Bougainvillea Retirement Village has nominated these students for the North Sydney Community Award in the ‘Next Generation’ category for the work they did last year.

The award ceremony is taking place during the School Holidays on Friday 19 April – I am excited to be accompanying the students and quietly hoping their efforts are recognised.

ISA Parent Survey – Please Contribute

As part of the ISA (Independent Sporting Association) Strategic Review of Sport, the ISA has engaged an independent consultant to prepare a survey covering themes such as parent satisfaction, expectations, and sentiment toward various elements of ISA, with key demographic questions also included. Secondary School students are also being surveyed. The parent survey takes 5-10 minutes to complete and all responses are anonymous. Parent and carer feedback is valued by the ISA and will be used to guide ISA into the future. Here is the survey link. Please note the survey will close at 4pm tomorrow, Friday 12 April.

Relationships Workshops 2024

This year, the team from In Your Skin will be visiting students from Year 7 to Year 12, presenting and hosting workshops on the topics of relationships and sexuality. These workshops are designed to be engaging and supportive, assisting young people in developing healthy relationship skills. Students are encouraged to actively reflect on their relationship values and expectations, fostering a healthy and realistic sense of self and others.

In May, students from Year 8, 10 and 12 will participate in a half-day workshop facilitated by the In Your Skin team along with Redlands staff, including PDHPE staff, Pastoral staff, and Tutors. Students from Year 7, 9 and 11 will attend a 1-hour presentation delivered by the wonderful Dr Tessa Opie.

Each year group will cover the topic of consent in formats appropriate to their age and stage of development. Additionally, other key topics will be addressed:

  • Stage 4: Words & language, sexual activity & the law
  • Stage 5:  The media, communication & pornography
  • Stage 6: Intimacy and relationships, relationship values & sexual rights

The programs and principles of sexuality and sexual health education at Redlands reflect the UNESCO International Technical Guidance. This guidance identifies key topics and learning objectives that are integrated into the Redlands’ curricula and can assist parents in guiding conversations at home with their teenagers. Resources from Raising Children Network and Reach Out Parents also offer a range of useful age-appropriate articles on discussing healthy relationships and sexuality with your teen.

Rest and Renew

On Friday we will be holding three special end of term assemblies for students across Stage 4, 5 and 6. We look forward to formally farewelling them for the holiday period, sharing the achievements of Term 1, and offering reminders of the best ways to rest and renew over the break. The formal uniform, including ties for boys, is required for tomorrow’s assemblies. I do hope all members of the Secondary School community have an opportunity to reflect and connect over the next two weeks.

We look forward to students returning to school at the start of Term 2 on Tuesday 30 April. Please note that blazers are mandatory during Terms 2 and 3.

Chaplains

Gratitude Gallery

At the close of term one it is always good to pause and reflect before we head our separate ways for a well earned rest and recharge.

We have attached a few photos highlighting some of our journey this term. We have been grateful for our inaugural Community Prayer Service and Easter Service. We are also grateful for staff reflection times and  opportunities like Pancake Day, Valentines Day, Harmony Day and Lent to celebrate and reflect as a community.

Our P -12 Chapels have focussed on the theme of Love. We considered what Love is and how we can build loving communities and relationships. The theme connected easily with our Easter Services as we celebrated God’s gift of love and hope. Student involvement has been key this term with many student led chapels. We are grateful for everyone and their willingness to share in Chapel.

Many opportunities to share and learn together.

Thoughts and prayers for a fabulous holiday.
Kind regards

Embroidery of Pockets – Term 1 2024 Update

With the introduction of the new uniform, we are currently reviewing our policy for Pockets, Half and Full Colours. Updated guidance will be issued early next term, which will outline the opportunities for embroidery on blazers along with updated criteria providing for greater transparency, equity and clarity.

This will not affect the current Year 12 students, who will be issued with their final set of awards for Summer Sport, Winter Sport and Cocurricular activities in Term 2, for embroidery over the mid-year holidays. This will be the last chance for Year 12s to have blazers embroidered and they will be able to request past awards for inclusion.  Look out for further information next term.

Languages

Tuesday of this week witnessed an inspiring celebration of diversity and unity during Redland’s Annual International Day event. During the stage-led assembly, students took the lead, crafting a captivating video that beautifully encapsulated our school’s deep appreciation for languages and global connectivity. Throughout the video presentation, both students and staff enthusiastically shared their personal language-learning journeys, highlighting our shared commitment to fostering mutual global cooperation and understanding.

The day itself was filled with cultural immersion and linguistic exploration, offering students a range of engaging activities. From a Chinese incursion, Spanish Luchadores mask making and Frida Kahlo flower making, French Francophone Flag craft, to sampling Japanese, Chinese, and French cuisines at food stalls, alongside the classic Aussie sausage sizzle, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

Notably, the event also served a noble cause, with charity contributions surpassing $2500. These funds will be directed towards supporting UNICEF’s initiatives for the Children of Gaza, reflecting our school’s commitment to making a positive impact on a global scale.

International Day not only demonstrated our school’s dedication to celebrating cultural diversity but also emphasized the importance of unity in building a more compassionate and interconnected world. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed, echoing our ongoing commitment to embracing diversity within Redlands and beyond.

Term Break Study Options and Advice

Over this last week, both IB and HSC Core Sessions have focused on study plans for the upcoming break. It is advised for all Yr 12 students to plan their break with structured study time, exercise, family time and rest. Planning to follow the school schedule from home is a beneficial way to begin this study structure and ensuring there is a clear delineation between structured and unstructured time each day is essential to remaining focused, motivated and prepared for the upcoming Term 2.

University and Careers Update

Continue to encourage your teen to make an appointment with our University and Careers Advisors who are scheduling back-to-back meetings with students to organise their Yr 12 Career Plan. This plan can include a wide range of paths after graduation and students are encouraged to engage with this plan and use it as a working document to best support them.

Also, regularly check the University and Careers Page in Pulse. A news article with up-to-date information will be posted weekly.

Artist of the Moment: Emilie Leroux

This month, Emilie Leroux was acknowledged by the Art Department and Arts Captains for her exceptional artwork and her contribution to the Arts community at Redlands. Oftentimes, you can find Emilie on Level 1 of the Redlands Learning Hub either at lunch or after school completing a project, engaging with an art piece or working with her peers and teachers. Emilie was asked a few questions to highlight her relationship with Art:

Why do you love art?

I’ve always done it. I wasn’t great at the start but it was something I did as I was learning English and then it grew on me.

What was your first experience with art?

I borrowed a book from the library on how to draw while I was waiting around for something in primary school. Then I started drawing step by step, following the instructions in the book.

What artwork are you most proud of?

The Wolf I created for my brother. It’s usually in his room and we had to borrow it for this display. He goes to a martial arts dojo and it’s called the White Wolf Dojo. I’m pretty proud of this piece.

Where do you hope to be with your art in the future?

I don’t really know. I just know that I want to keep doing it at least a little bit no matter what I decide to do later on.

Student Congratulations

Congratulations to Isaac Brooks. He went to Adelaide this week to compete in the Australian Track & Field Championships on 11-12 April.

Congratulations to Xander Halfen as he is on the Gold Coast this week competing in the Nationals Swimming Championships.

Congratulations to the four Yr 12 students who competed in the Australian Linguistics and Computational Olympiad (OzCLO) Competition last month. This group of students prepared over a few months and worked tirelessly for two hours on competition day. Well done to Krishan Price, Ahnu Guan, Sholto Mirrlees-Black and Johnny Wang for earning Gold in Round 1 of the Competition.

End of Term

As we approach the end of Term 1, I want to extend my congratulations to Yr 10 for a wonderful term. It’s been busy, exciting, and challenging, and I’ve been impressed with their efforts across various dimensions of school life. This term, Yr 10 has successfully managed the increasing demands of their Stage 5 academics, applications for Winter School, a plethora of cocurricular activities and excellent sports achievements. Please encourage your young person to use the holidays as a time to recharge, reconnect, and consider their study habits in preparation for the Term 2 examinations.

Year 9

End of Term

I want to congratulate and thank Yr 9 for a wonderful term. I have been impressed with their efforts across several different dimensions of school life this term. As I believe Note Day each week highlights, the sheer breadth of cocurricular activities Year 9 take part in, with many also having additional musical, dance or sporting commitments externally is quite something to behold. Adding the increasing academic demands of Stage 5, and building the skills to navigate and manage greater workload, it’s no wonder that many students look like they need a break to rest and recharge their batteries.

I wish you all a safe and restful two weeks.

Reminder’s About the Start of Term 2

Students are reminded that full winter uniform is required, especially as we have an ANZAC Day service first day back.

Subject Focus – English

This week in the English classroom, Year 9 moved onto a new unit on Sonnets after wrapping up their study of the indigenous dystopian novel, Interrogation of Ashala Wolf. The sonnets unit is designed as a prelude to looking at Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in Term 2.

9O moved out to the Fahl Garden to prepare a dramatic reading of Petrarch’s Sonnet CIV, exploring the shift in tone between the octet and the sestet. Half the class were assigned the octet, whilst the other half were assigned the sestet and students found a new-found appreciation for Petrarch’s sonnet form as they battled it out poetry slam style in the Fahl.

Meanwhile, 9Y explored the enduring value of the sonnet form by finding modern-day songs about the universal theme of the pain of love. Results saw Taylor Swift and Bruno Mars being dubbed modern-day versions of Francesco Petrarch, with a surprising number of similarities between the artists’ compositions.

It was fantastic to see the students engaging with literature in dynamic and creative ways and the English Department looks forward to diving into Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet with similar enthusiasm next term!

Year 9 Learning

This week the Dean of Studies (7-10), Anna Rolon, joined 9R in several of their core classes. It was wonderful to see such a dynamic and diverse range of learning happening. Much fun was had with fractured sonnets in Ms Peschardt’s English class, students participated in informative and mature discussions around consent in Ms Berkeley’s PDHPE class and learnt many interesting facts and applied critical thinking skills around Communist China in Mr Skinner’s History class. Year 8

The End of an Epic Term

After a marathon eleven weeks, including a raft of assessments, a shift from Summer to Winter Sport, a brief Easter respite and then a shifting of clocks forwards one hour, the Term 1 finish line is finally in sight! It has definitely been a busy start to the year and I am proud of how well our cohort has navigated the challenges faced in their first term of Year 8.

Amidst the helter-skelter, there have been some wonderful moments where our Year 8 cohort’s spirit and connection to our Redlands Values have really stood out this term, including the Swimming Carnival, Year 8
Camp, the Legally Blonde musical and the Cross Country Carnival, just to name a few! There has been an evident sense of compassion and support for each other across the term, and a real dedication to achieving their best in academic and cocurricular pursuits. The Tutors and I have been really pleased to see some wonderful growth in our young students since their Yr 7 days.

Tuesday was a great example of some of these elements on display, as the School celebrated International Day. Priding itself on our diverse student body and internationally minded educational practices, International Day is always a day of great significance for our school. It provides a unique opportunity for us to explore and value the diverse cultures, traditions and perspectives that exist within our School. Led by our wonderful Languages Department teachers, the International Day activities help students to appreciate and respect the richness of human diversity, developing empathy, tolerance and global awareness – essential qualities in today’s interconnected world. And, it is also a great opportunity to share the wonderful cuisines that stem from our rich international cultures and this was certainly an opportunity Yr 8 availed themselves of! A huge thank you to all the staff and students who were involved in coordinating the day and making it such an enjoyable one.

Exploring Relationships

This week, in Tutor Time, our wonderful Tutors have been supporting our Yr 8 students in navigating the sometimes tricky topic of relationships, including helping them to understand the importance of respectful connections with others, appreciating the significance of consent and considering the needs of those with whom they connect. The program, coordinated by In Your Skin culminates in a relationships day next term, where students are given an opportunity to engage in workshops where they will talk through relationships in a supportive space, giving them important skills and understanding for navigating their relationships with others.

These conversations require students to show maturity and respect to others around them and it has been pleasing to see our Yr 8s embrace the opportunity to discuss such topics in their Tutor groups.

Have a Wonderful Holiday Break

Ms Wang and I want to wish everyone a wonderful holiday break. Hopefully, it gives our students time to relax, recharge and reconnect with family and friends. We look forward to seeing everyone back, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for Term 2!

Year 7

International Day

International Day is a special occasion that holds immense significance for our children’s education and understanding of the world. It provides a unique opportunity for us to explore diverse cultures, traditions, and perspectives. By participating in International Day activities, students learn to appreciate and respect the richness of human diversity. They develop empathy, tolerance and global awareness, essential qualities in today’s interconnected world. Through celebrating this day, we can instill the values of inclusivity, kindness and acceptance of others, regardless of their background or nationality. It’s a wonderful occasion for families to come together, share experiences, and reinforce the importance of embracing cultural diversity.

Thank you to our incredible Language Teachers who organised these wonderful celebrations.

Here are some photos of our Redlands International Day Events.

Year 7 Library

Our Mobile Library is coming along nicely and we can’t wait to start our reading journey with Yr 7 Students. All students are encouraged to find a book, either from our Library or from home. Reading is especially important for Yr 7 students as it not only strengthens their comprehension abilities but also expands vocabulary, critical thinking skills and overall academic success. The holidays provides the perfect opportunity to take some time out to enjoy reading a new book.

A huge thank you to our Library Team for their wonderful selection of books and their continued support of our Yr 7 students.

Public speaking has a positive impact on students, as it boosts their confidence, refines their communication skills, and instills a sense of empowerment and self-assurance. We are very proud of these students and looking forward to seeing where these skills take them in the future.

Year 7 Day of AI – Friday 10 May

We are excited to announce an innovative opportunity for our Year 7 students to participate in the Day of Artificial Intelligence (Day of AI) event.

The Day of AI event is a globally recognised interactive teaching and learning experience designed to empower students to develop an understanding of concepts associated with AI systems and develop a deeper understanding of its potential impact on society and reflect on ethical considerations.

At Redlands, we believe in fostering a culture of adaptability, creativity, and collaboration. By integrating programs like the Day of AI into our curriculum, we are ensuring that our students are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in an ever-changing world. This experience will not only enhance their technological capabilities but also improve their ability to think critically, collaborate in teams, and communicate effectively.

Participation in the Day of AI event is not only an opportunity for our students to engage with technological innovation, but also a chance for them to take a supported risk, explore new ideas and develop their voices as contributors to our global community.

The program will run for two days, with the first day (Friday 10 May) dedicated to interactive learning experiences for the entire cohort. On the second day (Monday 13 May), students will have the option to participate in a time-boxed competition where they will work in teams to develop innovative ideas for using AI to tackle sustainability and climate change.

We encourage you to support your child’s participation in this enriching experience and look forward to seeing the creativity and innovation that they bring to the Day of AI event.

We would like to wish all our Yr 7 families a safe and restful break and we look forward to Term 2 together.

International Day

Thank you to everyone who assisted the school community in celebrating International Day on Tuesday, especially to parents who gave up valuable time to share their cultural backgrounds and experiences. Redlands is indeed fortunate to be culturally diverse in its demographic make-up and International Day is a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge this. It also serves as an important reminder that in a world where differences often divide, it’s crucial to recognise and celebrate the uniqueness everyone brings to our community. As a diverse school by nature, we have both the opportunity and responsibility to foster an inclusive environment, where everyone feels valued, respected and empowered to contribute their individual talents and perspectives.

Children’s Opera

Many congratulations to the members of Redlands Junior Choir who performed superbly well in Musgrove Opera’s excellent production of Mulga Bill’s Bicycle at The Concourse Concert Hall in Chatswood on Tuesday evening. The students were a credit to the School and their families and clearly relished the opportunity to sing with a professional cast and choirs from other schools. I applaud our students and music team for their huge efforts and hard work over many weeks in preparing for this special event.

Wayside collection: – A Message from the Junior School Captains

This year as School Captains and a Year 6 cohort, we want to help Wayside Chapel. Wayside needs donations of money and goods. As well as money, Wayside needs donations of single use toiletries which are provided for people who come in to have showers, brush their teeth and get changed into some clean clothes. We would like to gather single-use toiletries for Wayside Chapel. Given the school holidays are approaching, we thought this would be a perfect time to ask students and their families to collect these items from hotels and aeroplanes, if they are going away during the school holidays; please keep an eye out for these items on the list on the below flyer.  When you come back to school, there will be a large bucket that you can place the toiletries in so that we can pass this on to Wayside Chapel.

A reminder all Junior Campus students will be having a Mufti Day the first Friday back at school on May 3. Donations are to be handed in to class teachers. To help Wayside make a positive difference in the lives of people who are experiencing homelessness in Sydney, we aim to raise the most funds that any school has ever raised for Wayside Chapel in a year.

Thank you for your support.

Amelie and Pax,

Head of Preparatory School

As first term draws to a close, it’s a time for reflection on the journey we’ve undertaken together as a school community. We’ve witnessed growth and transformation in our students, both academically and personally. From the eager anticipation of the first day to the quiet confidence of today, we’ve seen resilience in the face of challenges and determination to succeed. As we pause for a while, I hope you find some precious time to reflect with your child about their favourite moments this term, times when they felt they learnt something new as well as perhaps times when things didn’t go to plan, and they had to face a challenge.

I have really enjoyed this term with your children. Each day they bring the staff and I such joy with their smiles, stories, their fearless play and with the kindness they show in developing friendships. They are such unique little people with hearts of gold. I wish you all a lovely two-week break and look forward to opening that door up again on Day 1 of Term 2 on Tuesday 30 April.

Week 1, Term 2 Note Day will contain specific term events but please refer to the calendar found on Pulse for any specific dates.

Celebrating our Diversity

International Day

Prep School was buzzing with excitement on Tuesday as we celebrated Redlands International Day.

I must admit this is one of my favourite days on our school calendar. It brings joy to our community and there is nothing better than observing the rainbow of colours, national costumes and ways that our students choose to represent a country they identify with. With over 50 nationalities on campus, it was a day filled with pride and with lots of sharing opportunities. We had so much fun guessing which countries were represented as students walked in the reception! Prep students were very lucky as there were many visiting parents and friends who shared traditions, stories, pictures, music, dance and so much more. Thank you to you all.

A big thank you to the incredible generosity of many of our families who made and shared delicious treats at lunchtime with the children, such a special way to learn about and taste new and exciting things.

To have such diversity in a school and to be able to share the message of everyone belongs is a gift that we all should never take for granted. The benefits of diversity in early years at school is such an important part of a young child’s life as the exposure to diverse backgrounds, cultures and perspectives fosters empathy and understanding, nurturing a sense of inclusivity and respect for others. This rich tapestry of experiences enriches our Redlands classroom discussions, offering a breadth of viewpoints that stimulate critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Again, a big thank you to everyone who helped us celebrate International Day.

Athletics Prep

For the last four Wednesdays, 148 students have participated in the Athletics Prep sessions at Rotary Park Athletics track. Every student pushed themselves, competing in as many events as they could with their coach. Credit goes to all the students, coaches, and staff they were engaged, enthusiastic and supportive of each other. Please enjoy the short video we have put together.

Winter Sport Trials

Well done to all our students who attended the second of two compulsory trials for our Term 2 Winter Representative Sport Programs. We had now uploaded the teams on the Redlands App. From Term 2 Week 1 your child will start in their allocated team based on these trials. The Team Lists are live and are subject to changes mid-week. Parents and or carers are asked to check these team lists prior to the weekend to ensure you know what game your child is required to attend.

2024 Term 2 Team list

Cross Country Carnival

The Cross Country Carnival which will take place on Tuesday 14 May for all Junior School students. The carnival will be held at St Leonard’s Park, North Sydney.

Each student will complete the course twice (two laps) to achieve 2.4km total distance.

Our aim is for this to be a fun experience for everyone on the day but also provide a great experience and challenge for those aiming to progress to HICES and CIS where the courses present many different challenges.

Upon arrival at the venues students in each grade will be divided into two groups (Boys Championship Race and a Girls Championship Race) which will run as separate events.

After the event the result will be sorted into age groups with the top 5 runners in boys and the top 5 runners in girls in each age group will make up the Redlands team that will participate at the HICES Carnival on the 21 May.

Please refer to our Cross Country Carnival page on Pulse for all information relating to our 2nd major carnival this year.

Junior School Athletics Carnival – Field Events Trials

As previously advertised, in preparation for our Athletics Carnival students will be completing a unit of Athletics in their PE classes in Term 2 which will cover High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put and Discus. Representative Sports- Saturday Morning Match Wear

Just a reminder for all families who represent Redlands in Saturday sport only Redlands Sports Uniforms and match day kit is to be worn. Each family should own either a school tracksuit and or a fleece that they can wear over the top of their playing kit if they are cold. If your child feels the cold they may play in their fleece if their match allows it.

Any incorrect item will now be confiscated as all students have received the same message.

Wednesday Sport Inability to Train

If your child has an injury that prevents them from training, please send through an email to Junior Sport juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au requesting they ‘sit out’ of training for that particular session. We can then forward this to the relevant external coaching staff. Where applicable please include when they can return to normal training, so coaches are aware of this. That way coaching staff are aware of an injury that prevents them from participating at the venue but also allows us to be aware of periods where they are medically required to ‘sit out’.

Representative Sport Student Absence

If students are absent on match day, parents are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.

2024 Redlands School Play: Away by Michael Gow

Shakespeare Under the Stars

In case you missed it, please enjoy these images and a couple of reflections from two of our Year 10 Drama Students following last week’s delightful, Shakespeare Under the Stars event.

Reflections

The Redlands Shakespeare Under the Stars in Liggins Quad was a new experience and an exciting task for Year 10 Drama students. Working on Shakespeare was a challenge for many of us, but with lots of preparation, collaboration and help from the amazing Drama staff, it came together better than we could have imagined. Performing in such a large outdoor space such as the Liggins Quad was a new and challenging experience for many of us, but ultimately, we found that the stage space allowed us to put on an amazing show that was enjoyed by all.

Tessa Griffith

The 2024 Shakespeare Festival was my and many of my peers’ first Drama performance. There were mixed emotions towards it. Some excited, some terrified, some unphased, but we all put our best foot forward and managed to produce an amazing and unique night. We all really enjoyed getting to play around with the space provided in Liggins Quad and it was very interesting to see how different groups used the different levels of the R block in their own ways.

It was an amazing (and a little terrifying) experience for all of us that allowed us to really step beyond our comfort zone. I can’t wait to see what other performances Redlands Drama has in store for us.

Music

The Music Department’s final week for Term 1 saw exciting events and concerts happening across all three sections of the School. From the Yr 2 Strings Open Lesson, Assemblies, Battle of the Bands, Opera Performances Excursions, Variety Shows – there is always someone making and sharing their music in our great School!

Year 2 Strings Open Lesson

Congratulations to all Year 2 students on their wonderful performances for parents this week! Students proudly demonstrated their learning from Term 1, particularly open string songs – both singing and playing pizzicato. We can’t wait to see the progress Year 2 will make in Term 2, and parents can keep an eye out on Seesaw for the Term 2 learning slides after the holidays.

Battle of the Bands

On Monday night, a packed house witnessed an epic Battle of the Bands across three age divisions.  Our guest judge and industry specialist Carlos ‘C Major’ was impressed by the talent and dedication that shone from the Junior Guest acts through to the oldest division. Yr 11 student Aneke Golowenko took out the overall winner’s trophy, and we congratulate all the winners listed below for their successes.  Thanks once again to Mr Xu and our Music Tutors for their great work with the Redlands Rock Band program.

Junior Choir – Musgrove Opera Performance

Congratulations to all of Junior Choir! Your fantastic performance as part of the Musgrove Opera’s Mulga Bill’s Bicycle was a wonderful opportunity for all 119 students involved. Mr Holden and Ms Partington especially loved watching Junior Choir sing their favourite song “I am a Duck”, which they also sang as an encore for the audience. Well done Junior Choir, and a big thank you to Mrs Roberts and other Music staff for helping make it all happen!

What a fantastic way to end the term with our annual Redlands highlight variety show – Red Factor!
