Issue 11 2022 Term 2 Week 1 - 28 Apr 2022

From The Principal

I trust that you and your family enjoyed some time together during Easter and the holiday break and I extend a very warm welcome to new families joining Redlands. As usual, our Facilities team were hard at work on several projects around the School. One key project that has commenced is the modular classroom development on Winnie St, which will provide an additional six classrooms for the Senior Campus and additional flexibility in timetabling. This project will be completed during 2022.

The start of term has certainly been an emotional one personally, with the announcement from the Chair of Board that I will be finishing at Redlands at the end of this year. As you can imagine this decision was a most difficult one. Redlands is an incredible school, with highly dedicated and professional staff, dynamic and inspiring students and a supportive, involved and thoughtful parent body. The School is in a very strong position and the future is very exciting. The Board provide excellent governance, which has been crucial during the global pandemic and I am most fortunate to work with a wonderful and highly respected Executive team. The pandemic has caused many of us to stop and reflect, and being on the opposite side of the country to our son and daughters has been challenging and it is for this reason that we will return to Western Australia. I look forward to sharing all of the fantastic events with the community this year and know that Redlands will continue to go from strength to strength.

Secondary School students started the term with a very moving ANZAC Day assembly, with special guests, The Rev Tim St Quintin (Board Director and Rector of St Peter’s Anglican Church), Lieutenant William Samios (2016 Alumni) and Major Jean Marc Grant (2002 School Captain and past Redlanders President) each providing students with insight and context as to the significance of ANZAC Day. It was wonderful to have so many students involved and speeches by Olivia Salmond and Celine Patel articulated how young people can meaningfully connect with the ANZAC story. I was most impressed by the conduct of our students and their respect and engagement with this important assembly.

We are pleased that Dr Tessa Opie will once again be visiting the School this term as part of our partnership in the review and ongoing development of our Relationships and Sexuality Education programs. Further details will be forthcoming regarding workshops that will run for students on the Junior and Senior campuses.

Photo Caption: We were proud to commemorate those who have served our country at our Secondary School ANZAC Service yesterday, with guest speakers Lieutenant William Samios (2016), Major Jean-Marc-Grant (2002), and Rev Timothy St Quintin, Deputy Command Chaplain, 2nd Division.

Head of Secondary School

The first day back for Term 2 was one of commemoration and community. The Secondary School gathered for the Anzac Assembly in Dunnet Hall. A range of Yr 10 and 11 students were directly involved in the assembly, whilst many others, from across Yr 7 to 12, participated in the Advanced Concert Band. We were all privileged to be able to engage with a performance item called The Light Eternal (composed by James Swearingen) and conducted by Mr Mathew Owen. The Light Eternal is a ‘programmatic’ piece, written to honour the legacy of four naval chaplains on the USS Dorchester, docked off the coast of Greenland during WWII. The ship was attacked by a German U-boat. In a tale of heroism and sacrifice, the piece tells the story of the chaplains on board who bravely gave up their life jackets so that others aboard might survive. The Band was outstanding. Our young musicians brought to life the story of the naval chaplains in a moving and compelling performance.

Reflections and stories complemented the musical items, offered by visiting guest speakers and Redlands students. Students and staff were once more engaged by Reverend Timothy St Quintin from St Peter’s Anglican Church, Cremorne welcomed back Major Jean Marc Grant (Redlands 2002) and were inspired by the words of Lieutenant William Samios (2016).

William Samios graduated from ADFA in 2019 and obtained a BSc in Mathematics and Computer Science through the UNSW Canberra Campus. In 2020 he Graduated from Royal Military College – Duntroon, and was Awarded first choice of corps and became a Signals Officer. William has an enormous amount of passion for what he does, and follows a strong legacy as both his grandfathers were also in the military – one fought in Vietnam and the other in WW2. William was in Cowper House, played Basketball and Football and has fond memories of his time at Redlands. William shared three key learnings with the students.

  1. Things rarely go as planned, but that isn’t a bad thing – rather it defines your adaptability and resilience.
  2. You cannot overcome life’s challenges alone and the mates that help you along the way are your mates forever.
  3. Being a good leader means never asking people to do something you are not willing to do yourself.

For William Anzac Day is about reflection and the comfort of knowing he can call Australia his home. He concluded his message to the students with the following inspirational words, ‘It is intensely human to fail, all you have to decide is whether you’ll stay down when you do, or if you’ll pick yourself up and crack on afterwards’.

Yr 10 students Olivia Salmond & Celine Patel also shared their own reflections for our Anzac assembly. The girls anchored their reflection in the life and service of Lieutenant Colonel Vivian Bullwinkel who was an inspiring leader, a heroic woman and a proud nurse. She served with the Australian Army and was the sole survivor of the 1942 Banka Island massacre. This horrific event saw Vivian and 20 of her nursing colleagues forced into the sea and shot at by soldiers. To survive, Vivian feigned death after being struck by a bullet. Finding her way to the shore, Bullwinkel came across a wounded British soldier. Together, they fled to the jungle for 12 days while Vivian, although injured herself, cared for him before he passed away. After eventually surrendering to the Japanese, she endured three years of hardship as a prisoner of war and nursed others through disease and malnutrition before her release. With her tremendous endurance and ingenuity, she embodied the Anzac spirit during the war. However, Vivian Bullwinkel did more than just survive. She expressed remarkable traits and values, portraying everything about the Anzacs that we commemorate on this day beyond 1945, after all the guns had fallen silent. After the war, she co-founded the Australian Nurses Memorial Centre in Melbourne which honours all nurses from World War II who lost their lives and serves for the welfare and advancement of the nursing profession to this day.

Below are some photos of the students who supported the Anzac assembly this year.

Sailing Youth Championships

During the school holidays, Yr 12 student Benjamin Harrington (29ers) and Yr 10 student Ali Braden (Laser 4.7) competed in the Victorian Youth Champs in Williamstown.  This particular regatta was being used as the selection event for the Australian Youth Team being sent to the World Youth Championships in July, so was attended by all of the best sailors in the country. Ben and his skipper Tom spent the first week training, and then racing in the regatta over the Easter weekend.  The conditions were fickle as they always are in the Port of Melbourne, with winds so light some days that racing was not possible, followed by 25 knot winds and massive swells.  They finished 6th in the youth teams out of a fleet of 36, with a best finish of 1st.  Sailing in some very challenging conditions, Ali Braden scored 3 top 10 race finishes, leaving her in 11th place at the end of racing. Her fleet, ILCA 4’s consisted of 4 fellow world championship campaigners and 1 previous world champion. In a fleet of 25, 11th is an impressive result, leaving room for improvement yet signs of success throughout difficult, physically and mentally challenging conditions.

Community Update

Welcome back. The School has quickly sprung back to life with a number of significant student and community events taking place as this week has unfolded.

Earlier this week I was I was delighted to attend the Annual General Meeting of Redlands where our Chair of the School Board, Principal and Chief Financial Officer presented a positive and engaging account of our progress, achievements and accounts through the challenges of another pandemic ravaged year. It was lovely to chat with the wide variety of passionate Redlands Directors and Members who were in attendance.

ANZAC Day was commemorated earlier in the week with a moving Senior School Assembly that featured first hand experiences of those in the service of our country along with some personal and equally impassioned student reflections. Redlanders Major Jean-Marc Grant (Class of 2002) and Lt William Samios (Class of 2016) and Redlands Director and former army officer, Reverend Timothy St Quintin each recounted their personal experiences of active duty and what ANZAC Day means to them.

Yr 10 students Celine Patel and Olivia Salmond provided an inspiring historical reflection during the service, highlighting the remarkable story of Lt Colonel Vivian Bullwinkel MBE AO. Lt Colonel Bullwinkel enlisted in the Australian Army Nursing Service in 1941 and while sailing out of Singapore to escape the imminent Japanese Army invasion with 65 other nurses, the boat they were travelling in was sunk. Lt Colonel Bullwinkel was the only female survivor of the massacre at Banka Island where 21 members of the Australian Army Nursing Service and other survivors of the sinking ship were shot by the Japanese Army. She escaped into the Indonesian jungle where she remained for 12 days before being captured and interned in a local prisoner of war camp where she remained for three and half years. Vivian retired from the Army in 1947 and became Director of Nursing at the Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital in Melbourne. She devoted herself to the nursing profession and to honouring those killed on Bangka Island, raising funds for a nurses’ memorial and serving on numerous committees, including a period as a member of the Council of the Australian War Memorial, and later president of the Australian College of Nursing.  A truly inspiring Australian.

We give thanks to the many men and women who gave their lives, along with those that have served, like Lt Colonel Bullwinkel, and those who are still serving, in times of both peace and conflict.

A reminder that we seek parents and carers in our community who have a passion for, and significant experience in, driving sustainability outcomes.  At Redlands, we have a strategic commitment to sustainably managing the facilities and grounds of the School whilst continually engaging our students and the wider community in this endeavour. Commencing in Term 2 2022, a Sustainability Community Advisory Group will be formed to provide guidance and support to the Sustainability Working Group in the development of a School Environmental Management Plan and contribute to ongoing and future sustainability initiatives at Redlands. For more information on the Sustainability Community Advisory Group or to register your interest in joining click here or email us at sustainability@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

The support from our community for the Redlands Science and Innovation Luncheon event has been terrific. Tickets are still available and are on sale here. Proceeds from this event will be dedicated to the Dr Sue Morey AM Scholarship. Those unable to attend can still support the event through a number of different channels that include the purchase of raffle tickets, bidding on auction items or just by making a donation. For more information on the Science and Innovation Luncheon, along with our special guest panellists, please visit our Foundation page.

These events provide a mere snapshot of the wide variety of opportunities our community has to engage with our School and we look forward to welcoming more of our community back on to the campus as Term 2 unfolds.  Thank you to those parents that I met this week for sharing your time and feedback with me.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Lieutenant William Samios

Message from William

I first heard of the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) in Year 11 when the Redlands Career Advisor took a group of students to Canberra to look at opportunities in the Australian Defence Force (ADF). I had found that whenever I was exposed to the military, I felt an urge to join. After discussing it with a friend, I decided to apply that night. I’ve always been comfortable with taking risks and see myself as a bit adventurous. Above all else, I wanted a challenging and unique career.

Joining the military had rarely crossed my mind let alone that of my peers. I was one of the first Redlands students to have joined in several years and it left me feeling a little daunted. For those that are unsure about joining, you join the Army to do something that matters, that has value, not just to Australia but to other people’s lives. And I love what I do.

ADFA is a unique place. The academy itself is a military institution, charged with developing future officers for the ADF. Concurrent to military training, all cadets and midshipmen study a degree through UNSW. Lecture groups are much smaller than at other university campuses – the average class size was about 15 students for a lecture in my third year.

Unlike traditional universities, there are not as many holidays. That’s not to say there are none, just fewer. Instead, trainees undergo their service-specific training, myself being an Army trainee that was mostly comprised of field activities. Time management was challenging, you are expected to conduct your military training and university studies simultaneously. A roll call is conducted every lesson, so there is no skipping class. The normal aspects of military life such as room inspections, physical training and an overarching expectation of how you hold yourself are all-encompassing.

There are two major benefits of this arrangement: personal growth and setting yourself up for success in life. In terms of personal growth, you are constantly pushed outside your comfort zone and a high degree of resilience is demanded from you – everything is intentionally challenging. The rationale is that you graduate as a well-rounded, professional and resilient individual. As far as setting yourself up for life, you undertake a fully funded tertiary degree and are on a salary from the time you begin.  When you leave, you are a fully commissioned military officer, with a tertiary degree from a respected academic institution.

In terms of what I studied, I started out doing an Electrical Engineering degree. Whilst I performed well in the theory components, I struggled with practicals and labs. I changed my degree to a BSc in Mathematics and Computer Science after about 6 months. A message for current students is that there are opportunities to change degrees and switch courses after you commence university. There is no shame in changing what you started off doing.

After graduation from ADFA, I started at the Royal Military College – Duntroon. This is where Army Officers are made. All graduates of the college receive their commission from the Governor-General, giving lawful authority for them to command soldiers. It is a difficult course that demands a lot from you, though the juice is worth the squeeze. I am extremely proud of graduating from Duntroon as this experience taught me more about myself than anything I’d ever done. After finishing in 2020, based on my performance and preferences, I received my first choice of corps and became a Signals Officer.

Debating News

Heats for the two inter-school competitions that run in Semester 1, the Independent Schools Debating Association (ISDA) and Friday Evening Debating (FED), will be completed this week. Although Debating started over Zoom at the start of the year, it has been a pleasure to enjoy some face-to-face debating in recent weeks, with parents coming to watch.

With the heats over, it is a great opportunity to say a massive congratulations to all those who have participated in both these competitions. All of our sixteen teams have at least one win, with a number of teams having won several rounds in the preliminary debates. A special mention goes to FED 8As who have won all but one debate thus far!

Next week we will find out which ISDA and FED teams have progressed to the elimination rounds.

Please contact Mrs Beggs, Debating Co-ordinator at r.beggs@redlands.nsw.edu.au or Benedict Adamson, Debating Captain, if you are not already a Debater but would like to become involved – and keep an eye out for information about House Debating in Terms 2 and 3.

Year 12

Yr 12 are currently on exams this week.

Year 11

Welcome Back!

Dear Yr 11 parents and carers, I hope you and your families had a restful and relaxing Easter break. This term, our Pastoral focus will be on Authentic Leadership: Using our Influence to Serve Others. Authentic Leadership encourages Year 11 students to use their influence to serve others not just within the school community, but also in their broader lives. Building on earlier Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), in which they have identified their own values and character strengths, students will be encouraged to consider how they can use these values, beliefs and behaviours to model good leadership. Links will be explored between the notion of ‘servant leadership’ and Year 11’s important Service initiatives, ranging from fundraising for Cambodia’s M’Lop Tapang organisation, to participating in the Matthew Talbot breakfast service that takes place locally. This topic will stimulate important learning, discussion and reflection as Yr 11 prepare to apply for school leadership positions in coming months.

Below are the key dates for Term 2:

Week 1

27 April – First Day Back / Senior School Anzac Assembly

Yr 11 Student Conferences

Week 2

Senior School Anzac Assembly

On  Wednesday the 27 April, the Senior School gathered to pay their respect for the ANZACS. Well done to the following students who did a magnificent job assisting with the assembly:

  • Charlotte Scamps
  • Jacob Rieser
  • Oliver Talbot
  • Sam Chubb
  • Joe Griffiths
  • Jamie Dawson Damer

Yr 11 Student Conferences

If parents, carers and students were unable to meet with a teacher on Wednesday evening, please contact the class teacher directly via email to organise a meeting over the phone. From the general student feedback, the Student Conferences were constructive and helpful; particularly with providing information for key focus areas in the lead up to Term 2 assessments.

Day of Hope – Tuesday, Week 2

In Week 2, on 10 May, Year 11 will be participating in the Day of Hope, presented by former Young Australian of the Year (Qld, Community Service) and popular High School Speaker Glen Gerreyn, Day of Hope gives teenagers the foundations they need to build a hope-filled future. This powerful presentation helps students understand the effects that external influences and their own self-belief has on their decisions. As Glen shares his story and his message, the young people in the audience learn to recognise negativity, step away from it and start making choices that allow them to tap into their talents and start to shine. They leave with a refreshed energy for life and a renewed understanding of their limitless potential.

There are three modules in this seminar:

Module 1 – The Power of Purpose

During this session, students are reminded that motivation is only part of the equation. Before they take action, they need a clear vision for the future. Once they can see what lies ahead and how exciting it will be, they are inspired to take massive and decisive action towards their goals.

Module 2 – Jail Break

This session plays an essential role in re-empowering youth by breaking the cycle of apathy many teenage students find themselves trapped in. Glen’s personable style and relatable messages help them understand how to start building resilience and feel more hopeful about the future.

Module 3 – Unstoppable

The final, inspiring module in this high school motivational seminar teaches the power of setting ‘moonshot’ goals (as defined by Google), to help solve large scale problems.

This personal development session helps students of all backgrounds. After hearing the incredible moonshot goals of companies and people around the world, plus Glen’s own bold plans to make an impact, students are armed with the courage and hope they need to face challenges, pick themselves up and keep going.

Welcome Back to Term 2

Yesterday morning started off with the Anzac Day Assembly where students were able to take a moment, reflect on the meaning of the day, hear important messages from several speakers, including a Redlands alumni and their Yr 10 peers. Musical performances by the Advanced Concert Band were exceptional and enjoyed by all.

Several Yr 10 students also volunteered to contribute to the service in various ways from being flag bearers, to reading a prayer to sharing their personal reflections. Thank you to the following students for stepping up as leaders and being vulnerable in expressing reflection and  emotion for this important day: Tara Gold, Antonia Morgan, Heidi Colleran, Ethan Beggs, Eva Osborn, Noah Berbic, Sophia Rolon, Ashley Stapleton, Anneka Steele and Conor Petersen.

Yr 10 Subject Selection

This term, Yr 10 will engage in a series of opportunities designed to support them to select their senior pathway. A schedule has been developed to generate interest and deepen understanding of the various options available in the senior years. Yr 10 students will learn from the experiences of key staff members, professionals, senior students and alumni. They will engage in self-assessment, explore what the data reveals about their interests and potential, consider future careers and participate in a face-to-face chat with a member of the Secondary School Leadership Team. Parents will be involved at key points so that students are supported to reflect at the different stages of the subject selection journey and ultimately choose their pathway, HSC or IB, and the subject disciplines they wish to study, through a process of disciplined discernment.  A separate communication to Year 10 parents and students will be forthcoming and contain Course Handbooks and the Subject Selection Schedule.

Students engaged in their first presentation for Subjection Selection today during Tutor.  Mrs. Gemma Van de Peer and Mrs. Anna Rolon introduced the process, introduced key people and shared important upcoming dates and events.  Students were also asked to complete a survey regarding their current thoughts on subject selection by Monday morning at 9am.  All resources from today’s meeting will be sent through to students in the iLearn Yr 10 Pastoral Page as students remain at the centre of this process and in control this process.

Yr 10 Vaccinations 2022

Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.

The following vaccine will be offered for Yr 10 students: Meningococcal ACWY vaccine on 26 May, 2022.

Parent Information Kits that include an information sheet, consent form and privacy statement will be handed to students in Week 2 to bring home to parents/guardians. To consent to the vaccination of their child, parents/guardians are advised to:

  • read all the information provided
  • complete the consent form, including signing their name next to the vaccine/s they would like their child to receive
  • return the completed consent form before Friday 13 May. Students are to drop off the consent forms to the Student Services Office.

Parents please ensure;

  • your child eats breakfast on the day of the school vaccination clinic
  • your child brings a mask to wear whilst in the clinic
  • your child does not attend school if they are unwell or if they have any symptoms of COVID

Absent students

Please note that, to improve vaccination completion, students will be offered a catch-up vaccination at a subsequent clinic. They do not need to go to their GP for the missed vaccine.

Parents/guardians who do not wish their child to receive the vaccination should return the uncompleted consent form.

A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic as a physical card. Details about vaccinations given at school will also be uploaded to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) to support complete vaccination histories. Parents can obtain this through the myGov website or the Express Plus Medicare Mobile app. (Anyone aged 14 years or older has to get their own statement.)

On 5 May, Year 10 Students will sit a half day of testing provided by Academic Assessment Services from 8.20am – 12.00pm. Head of Junior School

It has been wonderful to feel the energy of the students’ return to school this week and we look forward to a positive and purposeful term ahead. I hope that families have had some time to read through the extensive ‘Term 2 Welcome letter’ sent on Tuesday which sets the scene for the term ahead.

Yr 6 Camp (2-6 May)

We are looking forward to our Year 6 cohort enjoying their first camp since Year 3 next week in Canberra, which balances some wonderful outdoor educational experiences with civics education aligned with the year group’s current studies on democracy and government.

Yr 6 families should have received a detailed second letter on Wednesday outlining our planning and updated COVID protocols and I look forward to joining the group for two days during their time away.

All information can also be found on the Year 6 page of Redlands Pulse and via this link to the OEG and Redlands website (Password: Shine).

Weddings

Over the break, we were thrilled for two of our Junior School teachers, Melanie Cleary and Alix Smith, who married their respective fiancés. The students were delighted to also see these photos in our first assembly this week and I know that you will join me in wishing them all the very best in this next chapter in their lives.

Remote Learning Update

With the revised guidelines, students who are household contacts will be permitted to be in school after returning daily negative RATs and should wear a mask.

As has always been the case, if students are unwell and recovering from COVID, they are not expected to be learning and need to focus their energies on getting well.

However, as we have seen, where students are isolating and have been asymptomatic or have very mild symptoms and hence able to learn, class teachers will provide learning tasks for the few days as required and may include learning from specialist or Learning Plus teachers too.

First day back smiles are always the best aren’t they! It is only when I am standing outside the Prep Reception during first day back mornings of any term, that it makes me realise how much I miss our students during the holidays.

Our new students settled quickly as did Mrs Thomson on 1Red. Students have grown, lost teeth, had haircuts and in general, looked very smart as they walked through the door.

A sense of school pride is so important at Redlands, and I strongly encourage all our families to ensure that children have the correct uniform on when they are entering the school. This also means shirts tucked in and blazers on this term please. Today I did have to remind quite a few students that their black sandshoes are not part of the Redlands winter uniform. Students can wear sandshoes on sport days only. Please refer to the uniform policy found in the student diary for more information.

Helping those in need in Lismore

This term the PCG in partnership with K-2 classes will launch, “Light for Lismore.”

This service project will support The Northern River Children’s Services (NCRS), a not for profit organisation that is responsible for providing day care to over 2000 children in flood-impacted areas. This organisation is supported by the Commonwealth Department of Education and parent fees.

To help those in need, our students will create boxes filled with donated school and art supplies to replenish materials lost during the floods. Students will also make cards for families that are going through the heartbreaking process of rebuilding their lives.  This project will provide our children with a hands-on experience to make each box with love and care and remind our neighbours in Lismore, they are cared for and not forgotten. We encourage families to embrace this opportunity to teach our children about the misfortunes of others and how to act with purpose in the community by shining your light on those in need. More details will be forthcoming in next week’s Note Day.

The Camp is an incredible way to build as a squad and prepare our structures for what will be a fantastic, young 1stXV side. I could not be more excited to see how this group develops over the course of the weekend and look forward to sending through a full update in next weeks Note Day.

Whilst our Seniors are away, our Under 13s, Under 14s and our Under 15s will have a ‘Contact Focused Session’ held at Macquarie Sporting Fields. This session will start promptly at 8:00am and will conclude by 9:30am. This will be a brilliant opportunity for all of our Juniors / Inters to really learn and prepare their bodies for the contact nature of Redlands Rugby.

Please make sure to keep note of any field changes or Wet Weather arrangements.

General Sport Information

Wet Weather

If training is cancelled due to wet weather, a notification will be posted on the Redlands Sport Twitter page (@RedlandsSport) in addition, an email will be sent out to both students and parents. This includes morning & afternoon training along with weekend fixtures.

Fixtures

A friendly reminder that the weekly Fixtures (The Redlands Rhino) can be found on the Secondary School Sport page on Redlands Pulse from Wednesday each week. Please ensure you check this on Friday each week to ensure you have the most up to date fixture information.

Uniform

The Redlands sports uniform should be worn to all trainings and matches (students are not permitted to wear any non-Redlands branded clothing). In the event of inclement weather students should wear their Redlands fleece or sports tracksuit.

Game time and arrival times

Students should arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of their scheduled fixture on Saturday (unless directed otherwise). Please ensure you know where you are playing and the likelihood of traffic on Saturday mornings to allow adequate time.

Attendance at Sport

Can we please draw your attention to the following communication process regarding absence from sport:

  1. Parents are required to send an email to the appropriate Sports administrator prior to missing any training session asking for them to be excused
  2. Any student unable to attend a Saturday fixture due to illness, is required to submit a Medical Certificate to their Sports administrator by the Monday morning following the missed fixture
  3. Injured students are required to attend all training sessions and Saturday fixtures
  4. Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards & result in school disciplinary action

Please note that the first unexplained absence will result in a lunchtime detention with further unexplained absences escalating to a Friday afternoon Detention. Please refer to the Student Planner 2022 for full details on requirements for participating in a Representative Sport.

Junior Sport

Welcome to Term 2. We hope you and your family enjoyed the holidays. We have our second major Carnival this term – Swimming on Wednesday 15 June as well as our regular Sports Program. As has  previously been the case, the information that was emailed to all families on Monday this week was put together to provide you with a picture of the overall landscape of the Term. Please take the time to read through that email which will assist you and your child in your return to school sport. For those of you with children involved in our Representative Sports program there is some more detailed information in this email.

Similar to last year, we will be asking students to continue to practise good hygiene at all times and to use the hand sanitisers available here at school before and after sport training and matches. Students will also be reminded not to share their water bottles, towels etc. And in what we have become accustomed to in this current climate ‘If in Doubt, Sit it Out’ – any student, coach, official or parent who has any cold or flu like symptoms are advised not to attend their Wednesday and or Saturday morning fixtures.

Redlands Pulse

Music

ANZAC Service – Musical Tribute

Our Advanced Concert Band, featured soloists and conductors brought fitting tribute within our ANZAC service yesterday. The Last Post and Reveille were rendered by trumpeters Charlotte Harman (Yr 12) and Will Howard (Yr 10) while members of our Conducting enrichment stream Lachlan Scott (Yr 11) and Jamison Houchell (Yr 11) thoughtfully conducted the official music sung by Sholto Mirrlees-Black (Yr 10), Halcyon Hunt (Yr 10) and Aneke Golowenko (Yr 9).

35 accomplished members of our Advanced Concert Band brought their finest efforts in tribute to the ANZACs.  The success of an ensemble is determined by its parts, and the evident commitment to musical excellence was very moving. The Advanced Concert Band’s offering of The Light Eternal (Swearingen) enriched our school’s reflection time greatly and we are thankful for what they afforded us through their offering.

That’s a wrap! Red Factor 2022

Jumping back to the last day of term, Junior Campus wrapped up Term One on a joyous high note with our annual variety show, Red Factor. These student-directed performances were filled once again with wild contrast that thrilled and delighted. Congratulations and thanks to all participants for sharing your wonderful talents with us!

The perpetual Trophies have been polished and shined and Dr Eskenazi will be sending them home with deserving finalists!   Click below to reserve your free tickets to join us in the Edwards Auditorium in support of our talented pianists. Both events will start at 4pm.

Studio Concerts – Weeks 5-6 (Jr) & Weeks 7-8 (Sr)

Did you know that around 450 private vocal and instrumental lessons take place each school week during the day? We are very proud of the opportunities available to our Redlanders and of the team of 25 specialists who work with us to support this exciting learning. In addition to these lessons, we seek to provide performance opportunities through events, optional exams and elective classes across the year. Our Studio Concert Series each semester provides an informal and relaxed opportunity for our developing musicians to share their progress with a supportive audience of family and friends. We look forward to confirming days and times in the weeks ahead, and to throwing our doors wide open to those who would like to join us for this wonderful tradition of lunchtime concerts.

Senior Music Festival – Friday 17 June 2022 6pm

While Junior Music Festival is shaping up for our Junior Campus, our flagship Music event on the Senior Campus, the Senior Music Festival is to be held at the Concourse Theatre in Chatswood. Just 7 weeks away, ‘THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME’ theme is proving such fun to program and rehearse, and we promise a memorable show you won’t want to miss! Not just for parents of students in the cocurricular program, this night of nights is for Redlanders and music-lovers of all ages in our community.  Ticketing opens next week!

In Summary?

We look forward to a spectacular Term 2 and having you with us for the ride!

Remember to check the Pulse MUSIC EVENTS page, to ensure our flagship events and extra rehearsals are all on the family calendar.

See you soon,
