Issue 11 2021 - 22 Apr 2021

From the Principal

I trust that you and your family enjoyed some time together during Easter and the holiday break. As usual, our Facilities team were hard at work on several projects around the School. Grounds improvements were made on both the Junior and Senior Campuses, which have softened these areas and two additional changerooms have been refurbished on the Senior Campus, which will soon be utilised by the students.

The staff started the term with a highly engaging and interactive professional development session on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), which was led by our Deans of Students, Katie-Louise Clinton (P-6) and Marita Jansons (7-12). As part of our strategic focus on SEL from P-12, staff enjoyed presentations from CASEL Senior Staff Advisor, Dr Pamela Randall-Garner, via Zoom from the USA, along with past School Captain, Billy Gleeson, and video interviews with current students regarding what teachers do that makes a difference to their wellbeing, connection and sense of belonging. Subject Coordinator of Dance, Katharine Boase, somehow managed to convince the entire Academic staff to do a joint dance routine, which was an experience I will long remember. New talent was certainly discovered!

Secondary School students started the term with a very moving ANZAC Day assembly, with special guests, The Rev Tim St Quintin (Board Director and Rector of St Peter’s Anglican Church), Major Hayley Hummerston (past Redlands parent) and Major Jean-Marc Grant (2002 School Captain and past Redlanders President) each providing students with insight and context as to the significance of ANZAC Day. It was wonderful to have so many students involved and speeches by Jamison Houchell and Lucy Horton articulated how young people can meaningfully connect with the ANZAC story. I was most impressed by the conduct of our students and their respect and engagement with this important assembly.

A reminder that Dr Tessa Opie will soon be visiting the School to support us in the review and development of our Sex Education programs. As outlined in my previous letter, Dr Opie will present a parent workshop on Monday 10 May, from 7.00 to 8.30pm, which will be held in Redlands Hall. This presentation will mainly be aimed at parents of students in Years 6-12; however, all parents are welcome to attend. A future workshop will focus on parents of younger children. A letter with further details, including a link to a very short survey, will soon be sent to all parents. We are very much looking forward to working in partnership with Dr Opie.

This is Redlands

Welcome back. The School has quickly sprung back to life with a number of significant student and community events taking place as this week has unfolded.

Earlier this week I was delighted to attend the Redlands Annual General Meeting where our Chair of the School Board, Principal and Chief Financial Officer presented a positive and engaging account of our progress, achievements and accounts through the challenges of a pandemic year. It was lovely to chat with the wide variety of passionate Redlands Directors and Members who were in attendance.

It was also a pleasure to welcome parents of some of our youngest students into the Preparatory School this week as their children make the important transition from Redlands House. This event provided parents with the opportunity to meet and chat with our Principal and Head of Preparatory School, along with connecting with the key staff who will be guiding, challenging and supporting their children’s education.

ANZAC Day was commemorated earlier in the week with a moving Secondary School Assembly that featured first hand experiences of those in the service of our country along with some personal and equally impassioned student reflections. Redlander parent, Major Hayley Hummerston, Redlander Major Jean March Grant and Redlands Director and former army officer, Reverend Timothy St Quintin each recounted their personal experiences of active duty and what ANZAC Day means to them. On this day we gave thanks to the many men and women who gave their lives, along with those that have served and are still serving in times of both peace and conflict.

These events provide a mere snapshot of the wide variety of opportunities our community has to engage with our School and we look forward to welcoming more of our community back onto the Campus as Term 2 unfolds. Thank you to those parents that I met at each of these events for sharing your time and feedback with me.

Redlands is a school in the Anglican tradition that seeks to give students the opportunity to understand the Christian faith in a relevant and accessible way.  The Redlands Parents’ Prayer Group provides our current parent community with the opportunity to come together in prayer. The Group is now meeting in Week 4 of each Term in the David Armstrong Room at St Peter’s Church (with parking located on Waters Rd), with the next gathering scheduled for Thursday 13 May from 8.00-9.00pm sharp. Please contact Sally Swan (mum to Annabelle Yr 12 and Adelaide Yr 7) at swanlsally@gmail.com for further information.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

A very warm welcome to Term 2! I hope all our families had a relaxing Easter break and managed to enjoy this beautiful sunny autumn weather.

I enjoyed a few days away with the family in Port Stephens which we like for its fabulous coastline, excellent kayaking and fishing conditions. I have also taken up a running challenge in the preparation for the upcoming Mother’s Day Classic. It has always been a very popular event in our service and community calendar.

If you wish to be part of the Redlands Mother’s Day Classic team, please register yourself / your family here.

Second Hand Uniform Sale

Our second hand uniform sales have become increasingly popular, so we are going to do more of them! They provide great value for families and also give each of us an opportunity to contribute to the clear benefits of recycling. We sell 100s of perfectly good clothes that may otherwise end up being wasted and thrown out, eventually into landfill. The second hand uniform sales is a great way to make the most of what the world has already produced, help your wallet and do an extra little bit for sustainability as well.

The RPFA will now offer an online uniform sale every term under the following structure:

  • Week 2 and 3: Accept donations; please donate clean current uniform in excellent condition. Deliver them on a coat hangar (or hang them on the ones available) to the Uniform Shop during this two week period every term. Please note NO polo shirts, due to the new uniform designs being implemented.
  • Week 5: Email sent on Monday to everyone to announce the online sale is open for business for five days and will close at 4.00pm Friday.
  • Week 6: Collect sales from Uniform Shop during their office hours.

As always, funds raised are contributed towards the means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund

For Term 2, the dates are:

  • Donations to Uniform Shop: Monday 26 April through to Friday 7 May.
  • Email to announce the sale is open: Monday 17 May.
  • Close of Sale Friday 21 May
  • Collect sales from the Uniform Shop: Monday 24 May 9.00am to Friday 28 May 4.00pm (Uniform Shop hours apply).

There will also be a second hand sale of snow sports gear on Sunday 2 May. Click here for more information.

Welcome back to Term 2! I hope that you and your family were able to enjoy the holiday period, and spend some time resting and renewing.

Learning

This week Yr 12 have approached their examinations with good humour and positivity. I reminded them recently to be kind to themselves and remember that they are only partway into their Yr 12 journey. They still have a long way to go, and a lot more learning to do. Feeling unprepared or ‘not ready’ is pretty normal at this stage in the journey and framing the examination experience as a time of personal learning is the best approach. The personal learning that takes place during an examination block is about self, about study habits, and about what works and what doesn’t. Indeed, this kind of personal learning mindset can be applied at any age or stage and is the best way to view a challenging period.

Last week during the holidays, many Yr 12 students took the opportunity to attend course workshops, seek assistance from their teachers, and use the Learning Hub to study. Students converged on Level 2 and 3 of the Learning Hub, camped out in particular rooms and took full advantage of the whiteboards and writeable desks and walls. They worked independently to represent their understanding visually on whatever they could write on (most surfaces!) and also in groups, teaching each other, by way of explaining, elaborating and questioning. We also had clusters of Drama students collaborating on group work together and then attending subject-specific workshops in the latter half of the week. The Textiles students told me that their two days with Ms Alan in the first week of the holiday proved worthwhile and enabled them to focus on some of their other subjects in the second week. Overall, Yr 12 used their study time judiciously and still managed to make time for regular breaks, to buy sushi rolls/Chargrill Charlie’s and feel the sun on their faces in the Fahl Garden.

During the holidays, I was able to spend time with some Yr 12 students talking about ways to deepen their learning and enhance their study via targeted strategies. We spent time considering the different types of independent learning – how weekend or holiday study can be more intensive than weekday study, when it’s often enough just to spend a few hours in the evening getting organised, making lists, prioritising and engaging in basic revision. We explored the difference between spaced and mass practice, rehearsal, and transformation – that is, converting in-class study notes into new forms and then back again, via a cyclical process of refinement and elaboration, in order to encode and embed learning so that we can move from simple retrieval of knowledge to transferral of skills and understanding. Many Yr 12 students are already confidently practising study strategies which enable them to transfer their learning, such as testing an essay thesis against a new question or engaging in timed-conditions practice. Over the coming months, we will support them to introduce desirable difficulties such as changing their learning environment and study strategies so they can really test whether their learning has deepened. A real positive that emerged from my conversations with the students was their self-awareness and relationship skills. They felt more than able to approach their teachers for support and extension and were continuing to take advantage of getting up early in the mornings (thank you early morning Sport) to study and make the most of the day.

Student Planners

One really great aspect of Yr 12 study that the younger years can learn from is their effective use of Study schedules and planners which backward map the revision they need to engage in, prior to a test or assessment. This term at Redlands the teaching staff will be insisting that students in Yrs 7-11 more regularly and effectively use their Student Planner. The Planner should be an important tool for all students, and one they carry with them to all lessons. Despite their expertise in the digital space, traditional forms of notation are still important and a balance is necessary. Effective students use both paper and digital tools to manage their learning, shifting between the two. The Redlands staff appreciate your interest in your child’s Student Planner – students should be recording all assessments, events and activities here. They should also be detailing their planning of study and revision, even if it only represents a snapshot of a much more detailed version which is on their laptop or stuck to their bedroom wall. If your son or daughter needs support with something like this, their Tutor is the first person they should speak to. You can also email the Year Advisor for support.

Participating

Our Monday ANZAC Day Assembly was a wonderful community event in celebration of the ANZAC spirit and legacy. Not only were we treated to some beautiful music by way of talented singers and the Advanced Concert Band, we were privileged to hear inspiring reflections, thoughtful prayers and touching stories from students, staff and invited guests. The Program for the assembly can be found here.

Yr 10 students Lucy Horton and Jamison Houchell spoke personally and powerfully. They effectively worked together to deliver a message that was both relatable and inspiring to the students and staff. You can read their speech here. If you have time, I strongly encourage you to read their speech, and learn about Jamison’s relatives and the impact of war on their lives, and Lucy’s insights into the psychological toll on veterans and how we can embody the ANZAC spirit into our lives.

It was also lovely to enable so many of our students, from Yrs 7 to 11, to take part in the ANZAC Assembly, which they did with pride and respect. I hope you enjoy the photos.

Performing

Over the holidays Yr 10 student Emma Mahon achieved a fantastic result in the Australian Track and Field Championships 5000m race. She came 4th, which is an exceptional result as she made a significant accomplishment. In Mr Walker’s words, ‘To run under 18 minutes is flying and to run a 64 second PB is impressive!’ A big congratulations to Emma!

Change Rooms

Over the holiday period, our Facilities team led the refurbishment of two spaces, which have been converted into Change Rooms. The Girls’ Change Room is located inside the Gym and the Boys’ Change Room is located near the Top Court. We are currently finalising the Terms of Use for these Change Rooms and next week, the PDHPE teachers will induct the students into their use. These Change Rooms do not have bathroom facilities but they do provide a private, safe and warm space for the students to change into, or out of, their PE uniform. And just in time for Winter!

Chaplain

ANZAC Day is this weekend and the students in the Secondary School had a reflective and interesting service this week for that occasion. There were several speakers and this allowed us to explore many aspects of the remembrance, giving us a rich tapestry to which to connect.

This Sunday is a good time to reflect as a family on the security and peace we have as a result of the self-sacrificing service of the Armed Forces. Perhaps to attend a dawn service, or gather on your driveway at dawn with a candle, or have a meal together and take some time to talk about the ANZAC tradition.

I was particularly interested in the significance of the playing of Rouse (Reveille) in a memorial or funeral context. Usually used to announce the commencement of the day’s duties, playing this for the dead seems strange. It was a military testament to the hope of the resurrection of those of faith, it is a note of hope.

Hope in the context of armed conflict, death and disaster is so important. There is the hope of a new day and beginning without conflict, healing for the land, resuming normal life as the light at the end of the tunnel. The hope we have as we enjoy our beautiful country. The hope of the freedoms won for us. Hope of a better and brighter future in the place where hate and greed is gone, humanity is healed of its fatal flaws and there is no more tears, sadness or death. This is what the resurrection hope is and was secured for those who trust in Jesus on that Sunday morning two thousand years ago when Jesus rose from the dead.

Redlands Parents’ Prayer Meeting

A number of parents have wanted to participate in morning prayer meetings but have found that demands of work have made this difficult. This term instead of the meetings during the day, a group of parents have organised a meeting in Week 4 on Thursday 13 May in the evening. It is a wonderful thing to support the school community through prayer.

Thursday night 13 May
8.00-9.00pm (Week 4 of each term)

Welcome Back to Term 2

I hope you all had a restful time over Easter and managed to spend some quality family time together during the school holidays. It was lovely to see all of Yr 11s smiling faces early Tuesday morning. Most were looking very smart but some boys required haircuts and have been asked to do so as soon as possible. Some girls’ skirts were too short and they have been asked to rectify this as soon as they can. Term 2 is shorter than last term, at nine weeks long, but I am sure it will be equally packed full of study and cocurricular activities. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me, Jess Howard, or your child’s Tutor should you have any questions or concerns.

Driving to and From School

As many of Yr 11 will be getting their P Plates in the coming months, it is important that once they receive their licence, they complete a ‘Student application to drive to and from school’ form. This form enables those who wish to drive to and from school the ability to do so. Without having handed in this form, students are not permitted to drive themselves to school. This form must be signed by parents and have a copy of the student’s licence attached before being signed by either Ms Mountain or Ms Howard, and Ms Van de Peer. Additionally, if a student wishes to be a passenger in a vehicle of another Redlands student, they must have completed a ‘Student application form to be a passenger in a vehicle driven by another Redlands student’.

Both these forms can be found on the Yr 11 Pastoral Page under Important Year 11 Information or students can pick one up from Mrs Coutts from the Secondary School Office.

ANZAC Assembly

We began this week with an ANZAC Assembly and it was great to be able to meet as a whole school in Dunnet Hall for the first time since early last year, due to COVID-19 restrictions. Yr 12 is currently on an assessment block so Yr 11 was the senior Year Group sitting on seats and being actively involved in the assembly. In particular, it was wonderful to see the following students playing a role in this solemn and powerful event:

Readings by Sophie Kennedy and Mia Kloiser-Jones
Prayers by Vincas Lapinskas and Omar Rihani
Ode of Remembrance by Lucinda Bentley
The Last Post played by Charlotte Harman

Singing led by Eden Borrie, Mia Kloiser-Jones, Omar Rihani and Callum Wardman-Browne.

Studying

All students in the next two weeks will be completing Termly Study Planners with their Tutors and also setting goals based on last term’s effort grades and academic achievements. Please have a conversation with your child as to what this involves and contact their Tutor if you have any questions regarding these areas. This Termly Study Planner is something they have been completing at the start of each term and they should be using it when planning upcoming assessments as well as topics and times for studying each week.

Welcome Back!

I hope you and your family all had a relaxing holiday. The term has started strongly with excellent representation of Yr 10 at the Anzac Day Assembly. Lucy Horton and Jamison Houchell both spoke at the Anzac Assembly and reflected upon what Anzac Day meant for them. They spoke with genuine passion and authenticity with Jamison talking about his Grandma’s Great Uncles – Ernest and Horace – and their involvement in World War 1 and Lucy talking about how we, as individuals, can broaden our scope in thinking of the challenges faced by present and emerging veterans, and how we can respond as a community by seeing ANZAC values for their eternity. Extracts from their speeches are highlighted under Student Achievements.

Academic Assessment Services Testing

On 29 April, Yr 10 students will sit a half day of testing provided by Academic Assessment Services from 8.30am-12.00pm. As independent consultants, they specialise in the assessment and analysis of educational performance and progress. Their team of professionals includes measurement and curriculum experts, education experts and teachers who will provide guidance in the development of strategic action plans for each student. Parents will also be posted a copy of the results. If your child misses the assessment, catch ups will be offered on 6 May at 8.30am.

Winter School Uniform

Just a friendly reminder that all students are to wear their winter school uniform this term, including blazers to and from school. The Redlands woolen school jumpers can be worn underneath blazers as an extra layer of warmth.

Arnhem Land Trip Sign Up

Just a friendly reminder that there is still time to register for the Arnhem Land Trip: ‘Midawarr’, which will occur during the July holidays. (25 June-3 July).

Following on from last year’s culturally immersive ‘Midawarr’ Redlands incursion, the Midawarr trip is a complete cultural immersion, which will involve Yr 10 participants travelling to NE Arnhem Land for a unique Yolŋu experience. Conducted in partnership with remote communities on traditional land, Midawarr participants are taken on a journey that provides first-hand knowledge of what it’s like to connect to Country and see the world through the eyes and hearts of Yolŋu.

The booking form along with further information about the trip including a draft itinerary can be located here.

Once the booking form is complete, please sign and email to info@culturecollege.org.

Student Achievements

Below are extracts from Lucy Horton and Jamison Houchell’s moving Anzac Day speeches which they both read together at the Anzac Day Assembly. Congratulations again to both students for the time they took throughout the holidays to construct their speeches and their meaningful words which brought to light their personal connection to Anzac Day. Both Lucy and James spoke with such confidence, poise and passion.

Lucy Horton

“I connect with ANZAC as a 21st century listener and learner. While I haven’t experienced war, I do have an interest in Veterans’ Affairs, and believe that it is our common humanity that helps us empathise with soldiers like Horace and Ernest, and commits us to supporting other veterans like them today.

So, how can we connect with ANZAC? One thing we can all do is try to uncover a personal connection, whether it is family or a cause to be passionate about, and take the time to really investigate it; we can ask questions and listen to loved ones and to veterans as they share their memories, knowledge and experiences.

The more we know about a particle’s position in the past, the harder it is to track its momentum presently.

We can’t propel the ANZAC story into the future without knowing the historical trajectory it’s been on. Just as we can’t see the full dimension of the Battle of Fromelles without looking at its consequence here and now. So look. Look and listen.

We can watch it as it travels. We can fuel it.”

Jamison Houchell

Listening to my grandma talk about Horace and Ernest made me realise a few things about service. Firstly, that those who fight in war are more than a statistic. A lot of the time we focus on the sheer scale of events through numbers and facts, but lose sight of the people behind them; the heroes of ANZAC were real men like Horace and Ernest who had their own hopes, dreams and flaws.

Secondly, I learned that service leaves a mark; it has a ripple effect not only on those who serve, but also on their loved ones and the communities that support them. Horace and Ernest’s family were devastated to lose one of their beloved sons to war, as well as another who went missing and was never to be heard from again.

Well done Jamison and Lucy!

Anzac Day Flag Bearers

Well done to Oliver Kesby, James Whelan and Mark Danse for being excellent Flag Bearers at the Anzac Day Assembly. They assisted with the opening of the assembly, walking with special guests and Executive to and from the stage.

Success for Ellie

Ellie Trueman competed at the Regional Academy Hockey Games last weekend. Her Sydney Metro Academy Hockey Team played incredibly well and came home with the Gold medal. Congrats Ellie!

Term 1 Wrap-Up and Looking Ahead to Term 2

Welcome back! I am hoping everyone had a restful and full-filling break with family and friends. The energy across campus is inspiring as students returned this week already full of new ideas and sharing ways to make this term even more memorable.

Last term ended with the End of Term 1 Assembly. This assembly showcased an impressive collection of presentations from students in Yrs 7-9 sharing their perspectives on social awareness, inclusion and continuing to #choose to challenge in support of International Women’s Day.

We were very proud to have Ahnu Guan, Sholto-Mirrlees-Black, Charli Waterland and Annie Zhang share the work they started last year with the Sexism Project and demonstrate ways all students can continue to challenge what is right and how all small steps we take on a daily basis help change a culture.

This term, Yr 9 will continue to look outward while building further social awareness. Students will be researching a topic of their choice and sharing their own voices for what they believe is important. Students interested in Service opportunities have also started speaking up with project ideas to support this work. Please encourage your teenagers to actively engage in these opportunities every other Wednesday during Tutor. Stay tuned as the term unfolds.

Assessment Calendar

Please encourage your teenager to have a copy of this term’s Assessment Calendar printed and in plain sight during Home Learning. It is linked for parents in Redlands Pulse and for students in the iLearn Pastoral Page – Key Information.

Inter-House Debating

Cowper took on McDouall on Wednesday and Roseby takes on Dumolo on Thursday this week in the new tradition of Yr 9 Inter-House Debating. This cohort is full of enthusiastic and talented debaters who have returned to participate in this year’s event. However, it is incredible to see the new talent who have stepped out of their comfort zones and challenged themselves to engage in a new experience this year. Each team consists of three debaters, one support person and additional participants to chair the event and time-keep.  The two winning Houses will debate in a final round this Friday with the entire cohort watching and supporting. A wrap-up of the event will be shared in next week’s Note Day.

Dumolo: Johann Cheah, Conor Petersen, Sophia Rolon, Anneka Steele and Annie Zhang

Roseby: William Andrew, Flynn Kieran, Jack Petering, Krishan Price, Daisy Thomas and Scarlett Thorp

Cowper: Josephine Bannon, Emilie Leroux, River Stefanovic, Jocelyn Wang and Charlotte Waterland

McDouall: James Bardwell, Marcus Cooper-Hor, Jack Keogh, Sholto Mirrlees-Black and Kabir Yohannan

Interschool Chess Competition

Redlands is entering its first team in an Interschool Chess Competition and it is a Yr 9 and 10 team. Well done to these students for their interest in starting a new event at Redlands and their contribution to the program. We wish them all the best in their upcoming competitions. Yr 9 students involved include William Andrews, Mischa Barac and Thomas Jackson.

Yr 7-12 Photo Competition Winner: Christo Shacklock

This photo represents, to me, Multiculturalism in Australia because it represents flags from countries that represent people who call Australia home. I have placed the Australian flag in the middle as a symbol of unity for all these other flags and nations they represent. I have closely placed Great Britain to the Australian flag at the centre of Australia as a sign of Australia’s and my heritage, with the Greek flag close by. Flags are a symbol of national identity and Australia’s identity is to be inclusive of all people, races and nations. This photo represents that “We are one but we are many” as the song goes.

  • Fleeces are part of the sport uniform and are not to be worn in lieu of a jumper or blazer. Similarly, they are not to be worn to or from school.

Pastoral

Self-management is a skill that many of our students are developing. We’re aware that students who can effectively self-manage are able to manage their emotions, thoughts and behaviours effectively in different situations and to achieve goals and aspirations. This includes the capacities to delay gratification, manage stress, and feel motivation and agency to accomplish personal/collective goals. Developed self-management can also significantly influence responsible decision making.

Effective goal setting is a key strategy in aiding the development of self-management. We’re aware that for some, goal setting can be tokenistic. Subsequently, we want to increase Tutor/student engagement with academic and personal goal setting. This week, Tutors will be working with Yr 8 to set Term 2 goals, with the aim of:

  • Establishing and working towards the achievement of positive and realistic goals (both short and long term).
  • Develop a plan and action steps with reasonable timeframes for completion.
  • Analyse how current decisions may impact goal achievement.
  • Monitor and sustain progress toward goal achievement, using motivational strategies and celebrating successes.

Year 7

Welcome Back

A warm welcome back to all parents and students. We hope that all students had a restful and enjoyable break. It was a busy Term 1 and I think the cohort navigated it really well. It is important for our Yr 7 students to plan ahead for their assessments and use the Student Planner to write down home learning daily. Being organised is key when it comes to juggling school life.

Meet and Greet

Ms Willis and I are looking forward to seeing you (in person) next Tuesday 27 April at 4.00pm, Fahl Garden. This event provides a fantastic opportunity for parents and teachers to meet each other and also allows you to mingle and connect with other Yr 7 parents too.

Lockers

There are a number of students who do not currently have a lock on their locker. All students are required to make this a priority by the end of Week 2.

JUNIOR SCHOOL UPCOMING EVENTS

It has been invigorating to feel the energy of the students’ return this week for the start of Term 2 and prior to this on Monday, we welcomed all of our staff back for a day of professional learning. These days are of great importance and value to our staff and one of the areas of focus for our teaching staff on Monday was student Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), coordinated by our Deans of Students, Ms Katie-Louise Clinton (Junior) and Ms Marita Jansons (Secondary). This session opened with a guest speaker, Ms Pamela Randall-Garner, from the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) who joined us from the US via Zoom.

The SEL competencies of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationships skills and responsible decision making are embedded in our student wellbeing framework and connected to this, we enjoyed hearing from some of our current students via a pre-recorded video on this topic as well as hearing in person from the 2015 School Captain and Dux of HSC, Billy Gleeson. Billy captivated the staff audience with his poignant reflections on the influence staff had had on him during his time here enabling him to foster a growth mindset and challenging him to be open to new experiences. A highly accomplished all-rounder, the SEL competencies were now life skills he practises every day and have enabled him to thrive in a range of areas in his life.

With restrictions eased, we look forward to returning to hosting parent seminars through the year with SEL being one that we will share in more detail with parents.

Yr 6 Camp

Next week sees the first of our 2021 Junior School camps set off as Yr 6 head down to Canberra. The children and staff are excited about the week and I am looking forward to spending time with them too, just as I will visit every Year Group on their respective camps in the first semester. I will send parents an email update from Canberra to give you a sense of how the trip is faring and we will endeavour to put some photos up in the Yr 6 section of Redlands Pulse during the week. These special opportunities for teachers and students to observe and interact with one another in an environment outside of the classroom often builds a platform for developing increased connections upon returning to School, not to mention fostering potential new student friendships along the way. I am sure that the trip will provide some wonderful opportunities and memories for students and staff alike and I will also share my observations and experiences through Note Day.

Winter Uniform

Thank you to families for supporting the School’s requirements for Winter School uniform.

Student voice is valued in our School and through our Student Council suggestion box, a number of students have asked if shorts could be worn instead of trousers as is the case in the Prep School, which I am happy to support.

Redlands Arts Luncheon

We are delighted to host the Redlands Arts Luncheon on Wednesday 26 May at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, Kirribilli in celebration of the long history of Creative Arts education at Redlands that includes Visual Arts, Drama, Music, Dance and Design & Technology. This Luncheon is open to all Redlands parents and the wider community and provides a lovely opportunity to once again gather face-to-face as a community in celebration of the Creative Arts at our School.

The Redlands Arts Luncheon is sold out and we are taking any additional bookings on a waiting list.

The online auction with some incredible prizes such as holiday houses, degustation vouchers, wellbeing experiences and many more to support the Belinda Oxley Scholarship, will be launched on 13 May and accessible to all members of our community.

Connection with our Older Community

In Term 1 the charity nominated by the Yr 2 students for the K-2 Prep students was to provide creative items eg. bookmarks, letters, poems, origami to the residents of the Bougainvillea Retirement Village located in Neutral Bay. The students did an amazing job in providing such wonderful and carefully written material. The residents really enjoyed selecting their bookmark and origami and reading the variety of letters. This term we will continue to work on items for this centre but this time focusing on the particular text types being taught in class to make books for the Bougainvillea community. Thank you to the families who assisted their child in completing any of the Home Learning tasks around this charity initiative, it was very much appreciated.

Cross-generational connections are an important and exciting connection to make. I am so thrilled at the level of enthusiasm as well as kindness that our Prep learners shared last term.

From the Lucy Hill Library

We are excited to welcome families back into the Lucy Hill Library to select books for your children. The opening hours for parent borrowing are:

Mornings: Monday – Friday: 8.00 – 8.20am

Afternoons: Monday – Thursday: 3.00 – 3.30pm

Our Librarian, Mrs Victoria Roberts outlines below what the vision for our Prep Library is this term, as well as outlining our Parent Resource books. Happy reading!

Premier’s Reading Challenge

There is still time for your child/ren to participate in this year’s Premier’s Reading Challenge. They have until August to read 30 books. If they read a book a night, they will be finished in a month! Your child does not have to do the reading for themselves, you can read to them or share the reading.

Each child has a sticker in the back of their Student Planner that tells you their User Name and Password so that you can enter the reading record online at the PRC website. When you open the PRC page click on Logon in the left hand box and you will see where to enter these. This will take you to your child’s Student Reading Record. When you have added 30 titles it will say Congratulations and you will not be able to enter anymore.

There are hundreds of books labelled for this challenge. There are stories, information books, biographies, toon books, so you should be able to find books that satisfy both your child’s and your own reading tastes.

Recreational Reading

Library borrowing is all about recreational reading and students self-selecting material of interest to them. It is important that they can choose books for themselves and that is why we say to parents let your child choose some of the books and you choose some too. In this way you see what they are interested in and like, but you also get to broaden your child’s choices with the books you choose. We want your children to develop a love of reading and to find joy, comfort and laughter in the pages of books. We also like to encourage wide reading, because as with food, a varied book diet is the best. Not every book you take home will be a huge success. It is good to see what doesn’t work and to take risks with choices. Students need to know that it is okay to bring a book back and get something different. They also need to borrow things that they cannot read independently and know that you will read it with them. Peers may have read it or been talking about it and they want to see what it is about. The more you read aloud ‘great books’ (such as fairy tales, myths, biographies, realistic fiction, poetry, etc) the more they will crave returning to those enriching books that you share together. These books will mean your child’s vocabulary will grow and their knowledge of book language or story grammar will be extended.

Children’s author, Anna Dewdney spoke at the Fostering Lifelong Learners Conference in Cambridge, Massachusetts where she said:

“…when you read with a child, you are doing so much more than teaching him to read or instilling in her a love of language. You are doing a much more powerful thing, and it is something that we are losing, as a culture. By reading with a child, you are teaching that child to be human. When you open a book, and share your voice and imagination with a child, that child learns to see the world through someone else’s eyes. I will go further and say that that child learns to feel the world more deeply, and the child becomes more aware of himself and others in a way that he simply cannot experience except in your lap, or in your classroom, or in your reading circle.

When we read books with children, we share other worlds, yes, but more importantly, we share ourselves. Reading with children makes an intimate, human connection that teaches that child what it means to be alive as one of many live beings on the planet. We are teaching empathy. We are naming feelings, expressing experience, and demonstrating love and understanding…all in a safe environment. When we read a book with children, then children – no matter how stressed, no matter how challenged – are drawn out of themselves to bond with other human beings, and to see and feel the experiences of others. I believe it is that moment that makes us human. In this sense, reading makes us human.”

She doesn’t say that it is an easy job, but that it is extremely worthwhile and that it will set our children on the path to becoming confident, empathic human beings.

Multi-Cultural Reading

As part of the curriculum we include multi-cultural perspectives. Our very well-stocked Library has a myriad of books to support the Aboriginal and Asian perspectives of the NSW Curriculum, as well as those of other countries and cultures.

This term the Library is going on safari in Africa. On display, you will find books about the people and animals that live there. There are stories about children such as Handa and Jamela, stories about animals such as the wonderful tales by Mwenye Hadithi and the Tinga Tinga Tales, there are folktales explaining why animals behave in certain ways eg. Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears and How the Leopard Got His Claws. There are biographies on famous Nobel Prize winning, African people such as Nelson Mandela and Wangari Maathai, as well as enterprising children such as 14 year old William Kamkwamba who harnessed the wind to make power for his village and Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah who cycled hundreds of kilometres across Ghana with only one strong leg.

So this term, we are encouraging students to read a book about a character who does not look like them or live like them and read a book about a place that you they don’t know much about.

Parent Reference Section

There is a specific Parent Reference section of the Library which may be of interest. You are very welcome to borrow these books, dip in, take what you want at this point in time and come back later and revisit it if you need to.

JUNIOR SPORT Redlands Pulse

Welcome back to Term 2, we hope you and your family enjoyed the holidays. We have our final major Carnival this term – Cross Country and another term filled with our regular Sports program. We have emailed you a letter to provide you with a picture of the overall landscape of the term. Please take the time to read through this information which will assist you and your child in your return to school sport this term.

And in what we have become accustomed to in this current climate, ‘If in Doubt, Sit it Out’ – any student, coach, official or parent who has any cold or flu like symptoms or has knowingly been in recent close contact with a person displaying said symptoms are advised not to attend their Wednesday and/or Saturday morning fixture.

Parent Information Booklets

For all Sports information regarding what sports we offer when, how to navigate our documents, as well as information on Uniforms and Carnivals please refer to our Parent Information Booklets on Redlands Pulse.

Cross Country Carnival

As previously advertised the Junior School Cross Country Carnival will take place on Thursday 13 May at the Cammeray Golf Course. All students in Yrs 3-6 will be involved in some capacity. We will be running a staggered format, similar to last year, where each Year Group will be transported separately to the course and compete either in the Championship Run or the Fun Run, both the same course and the same distance. To determine which event they will run in, students will complete the Beep Test in their PE lesson during the first few weeks of term to qualify for the Championship Run at the Carnival. For more information about this and what qualifying levels are for each Year Group, please refer to the Cross Country Carnival Redlands Pulse page.

Wednesday Sport

Normal Wednesday Winter Sport recommenced this week. If you need a reminder as to what your child has selected for their Winter Sport choice as well as team selections, please refer to the Term 2 Winter Sport lists. These sports will continue until the last week of term, Wednesday 16 June. For timings and venues for all Wednesday sport, please refer to the Winter Sport Training Schedule. Key Dates and Calendar

On the Junior Sport Redlands Pulse page, we display upcoming Key Dates for each term. This has been updated for Term 2. Below that on the Redlands Pulse page, we also have a Sports Calendar that has a more comprehensive view of Sport for this term.

Representative Sport Team Lists

For weekly team selections please refer to the Term 2 Winter Sport team lists. These will be updated on Redlands Pulse following each fixture. Please remember that our Redlands Representative teams are fluid, meaning teams may change week to week depending on three main criteria: Ability, Attendance and Attitude. Any team movements will be discussed with your child by their coach.

Representative Sport Absences

If your child is unable to attend a training session or Saturday fixture, please complete our Sports Absence form located on Redlands Pulse. This will allow Sports Department staff and coaches to view prior and post fixtures and allow for another student to be contacted to fill in to make up numbers. As mentioned above, unexplained absences will affect your child’s gradings. As Representative Sport is not compulsory at Redlands, we expect all students who have committed to a team, commit to each game and training session for the duration of the season.

Draw

The Term 2 draw is now available. You can view it here and save to your phone/device. As it is live and subject to change, please do not print off the draw. We recommend checking back each Friday evening to ensure you have the correct time and venue for the following morning. There may be occasions where host schools change a time or location midweek and when this occurs the draw will be updated. For Rugby families your fixtures are released by IPSHA (Sporting Association that we belong to) on Thursday each week so your times and opposition will remain blank until then.

The Power of Music: To Feel, Heal, and Connect

Welcome back to another term of exciting music learning opportunities at Redlands, where our students learn together and build new connections and relationships. The Music Department values respect, growth, aspiration and courage, and these focuses underpin all that we work towards across the Curriculum, Cocurricular and Extra Subjects Music programs.

Across Term 1, students have participated in goal-setting activities and completing reflections from both individual and ensemble contexts, in supporting their various learning experiences across all programs. The way that we operate as educators in the Music Department, is based around a mission statement that is committed to guiding, supporting and mentoring all our learners.

As part of this process, the department launched a Yrs 7-11 mentoring program last term, designed to support our youngest and newest students who participate in music making at Redlands. At its heart, this program is part of our goal in establishing connections and relationships between our students.

Mission Statement

“Our community of Music educators, has a culture of high expectations with active learners. We foster curious, creative and reflective thinkers in a caring, safe and engaging environment, to make meaningful contributions to our 21st century world.”

Winter Music Festivals

As we approach the Winter Music Festival season, the Music Ensembles program across the Junior and Senior Campuses, will continue exploring and extending their musical skills in preparation for a variety of concerts throughout May and July. Staff and students are already well-underway in preparing a wide range of repertoire in readiness for the Senior Music Festival (Friday 28 May) and the Junior Music Festival (Thursday 29 July). The Department would like to welcome the school community to be part of these festive concerts.

Senior Music FestivalA Night at the Movies

The Senior Music Festival, A Night at the Movies, is a concert celebrating the vibrant Music Ensembles program of the Secondary School and this year will be dedicated in honour of Tomomi Takahashi, a Redlands Music tutor, who sadly lost her battle with cancer last year.

Tomomi will always be remembered as a key member of the Music team, and an exceptional musician who made a significant contribution to the life of our School, matched with an everlasting impact on the lives of the students she mentored and the staff she worked alongside.

A number of musical tributes in honour of Tomomi will form part of this concert, and we invite the Music community to be part of this event, in recognising how our lives can be shaped and impacted through the power of music.

While celebrating the wonderful life of Tomomi, we are so thrilled to be recognising the achievements of our Redlands Music students, who after over a year in reduced ensemble arrangements, have shown resilience and courage as learners, committing themselves to perfecting their skills event though in different settings. The 2021 Senior Music Festival will be a true testament to the dedication and perseverance of all our musicians throughout the pandemic, as they present an inspiring evening of music-making.

This exciting event in the school calendar will present a wide range of classical and contemporary repertoire, with the thematic feature of the concert exploring music from well-loved films. Traditionally, in concluding the Festival, students from the Music program participate as part of the Yr 12 Finale, in an exciting performance presented through song and dance. This year, graduating students, choral members and a rock ensemble will be performing a medley from Mamma Mia: The Movie, with hit tunes from ABBA. The Music Department anticipates a sensational concert showcasing the talents of its Redlands musicians.

Anzac Day Celebrations

The Music Department would like to acknowledge the musical contributions of the Advanced Concert Band and Advanced Choir musicians at the Secondary School ANZAC Day Service on Tuesday 20 April in Dunnet Hall. In honouring the members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, Redlands remembered all soldiers who served our countries, through reflection and commemoration of those ‘who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations’ and ‘the contribution and suffering of all those who have served’.

These musicians led the official music (National Anthem and the School Hymn), while the Advanced Concert Band presented selections from Williams’ English Folk Suite, conducted by Mr Mathew Owen. Thanks is also extended to Charlotte Harman who played the Last Post on the trumpet brilliantly and with much confidence.

Senior Campus Ensemble Rehearsal Attendance

Students are reminded about the importance of regular attendance to all Music Ensemble rehearsals and in meeting goals set at the start of the year in reaching a high standard of performance excellence. Morning rehearsals commence 7.15am and students should be moving to rehearsal rooms by 7.10am. Absence due to camp and/or illness will be the only acceptable reason for non-attendance. It is essential that you contact seniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au if you are unable to attend any rehearsals.

Junior Campus Ensemble Rehearsal Attendance

A reminder that punctual attendance at all ensembles is an expectation of all students enrolled in cocurricular ensembles. Prep Ensembles commence at 7.45am, with supervision from 7.35am and Junior School Ensembles commence at 7.15am with supervision from 7.05am. The exception to these times includes Junior Voices, Guitar Ensemble and Jazz Band which all commence promptly at 7.30am. Attendance is integral as all ensembles have begun rehearsing for upcoming events.
