From the Principal

School Musical

Last Friday night I very much enjoyed the School Musical, Return to the Forbidden Planet. Our talented cast gave a superb performance and the musical accompaniment, mostly comprised of our very able students and conducted by our equally talented Mr Jonathan Gray, was outstanding. Those on stage, in the pit and working behind the scenes in production, hair and make-up, film and puppeteering truly transported us to the intergalactic world. Congratulations and thank you to all the students for their extremely professional performance, to our Coordinator of Theatre and Drama Mrs Joy Daley and her team and to the many other  staff and parents who helped stage such an entertaining show.

International Day

One of the hallmarks of a Redlands education is the cultural diversity at our School and this week it was wonderful to celebrate International Day on both campuses. The Senior Campus saw a special Prefect-led International Day Assembly, then Years 7 and 8 participated in an Aboriginal incursion  and classes in Chinese painting, Kung Fu and Tai Chi, French cooking and craft, Japanese fan design and cooking, Spanish salsa dancing and an Ancient Roman cultural activity.

The Junior Campus was awash with students in colourful dress, wearing either national costumes or national colours from all around the world.  In the Junior School, parents shared their international backgrounds and experiences and curriculum lessons had an international perspective, while Preparatory School students were treated to a performance from Indigenous storyteller, Matthew Doyle, and Redlands House students enjoyed a range of international activities and experiences.

Thank you to all of the staff and parents involved in staging this special day in the Redlands calendar.

Science and IST Success

I wish to congratulate Year 9 students Theo Mirrlees-Black and Harrison Winton who both performed exceptionally well in the University of Sydney’s Gifted and Talented Science Discovery Program Qualifying Examination, placing in the top 5% of the 1500 students from around Australia who sat the exam. As a result of their achievements, they have been invited to participate in the Gifted and Talented Discovery Program in the July school holidays. Congratulations Theo and Harrison!

Congratulations also to the 16 Year 10 students who achieved a perfect score in Grok Learning’s 2018 Web Design Competition, a coding competition which teaches students how to design their own websites. The students competed for five weeks alongside over 6,000 students from across Australia and the world. Eight of these students have chosen to participate in the next challenge, the Intermediate Level Web Design tournament.

CIS Swimming Success

Congratulations to Laura Holtheuer (Yr 12), Jemma Donoghue (Yr 12), Sean Russell (Yr 12), Jodie Ah Chong (Yr 12), Jasmine Chubb (Yr 11), Olivia Donoghue (Yr 9), Samuel Virtue (Yr 8), Ella Palmet (Yr 8) and Sophie McGrath (Yr 7), who between them achieved 12 Top 10 places at the NSW CIS Swimming Championships at the end of last week. I especially congratulate the Open Girls 4 x 50m Freestyle Relay team who placed 4th and the Open Girls 4 x 50m Medley Relay team who placed 6th. More details about their achievements can be found in the Sports section of this week’s Note Day.

Happy Holidays

I wish all students, parents and staff a restful break over the school holiday period and look forward to welcoming students back to school on Tuesday 1 May.

Term 1 Wrap

It has certainly been an action-packed week which has concluded an action-packed term.

It was wonderful to see so many students from Yrs 7-12 involved in the School Musical, Return to the Forbidden Planet, last week. While I congratulate all of the students who shone on the stage, I would like to make a special mention to the large number of students who were involved in the crew, worked backstage or were in the orchestra. It is very special to see so many students leading these production areas of a school musical and while they might not be “in the bright lights”, their contributions are truly appreciated. I would also like to thank the many staff members and parents who have given so much of their time and effort in making this year’s Musical such a success.

On Monday night our contemporary music scene burst into life with the Battle of the Bands. Students from Yrs 5-12 performed a variety of numbers, displaying their talent and passion on the stage. We look forward to hearing the Intermediate Band Section Winner (Lifeless) and the Unplugged Section Winner (Ella Burgess – Yr 10) perform at Friday’s assembly.

On Tuesday we celebrated International Day with a special assembly, various activities and fundraising efforts. We raised over $500 from the international themed mufti day with the proceeds going to UNICEF’s Change for Good campaign, delivering life-saving health care, clean water and education to children wherever the need is greatest in more than 190 countries worldwide. Some of the other events and activities on the day included an Aboriginal incursion, French and Japanese cooking, Tai Chi, Chinese painting, Japanese fan design and Spanish salsa dancing. Students in Yrs 7-9 also completed activities in Tutor groups over the past two weeks on the United Nations’ Declaration of Human Rights. Walking through the Liggins Courtyard surrounded by students in international dress with a multitude of different countries’ flags hanging overhead, I was reminded that we are truly an “international school for Australian students, and an Australian school for international students”.  A special thank you to the Languages Department for all of their efforts and organisation of the day.

Yes, it certainly has been a busy week to conclude an enriching and fulfilling term. I continue to be impressed by the passion and commitment of our students and they have certainly earned a relaxing break. A reminder that students will need to be in Winter uniform from the beginning of Term 2 and are required to wear blazers to and from school throughout Terms 2 and 3. I wish Yr 12s all the best on their Half Yearly Examinations which will take place over the first two weeks of next term and look forward to seeing the rest of the students back at school, refreshed and rejuvenated, on Tuesday 1 May for the beginning of Term 2.

Term 2 Staffing Updates

I would like to inform you of some staffing updates for Term 2. Ms Kim Hurley will be returning to the Science Department after her Long Service Leave and we thank Ms Eliza Peirce for covering these classes in Term 1. Ms Karen Martin will be taking Long Service Leave in Term 2. Ms Katharine Boase will be acting Subject Coordinator during Ms Martin’s absence and Ms Angelique Mavromatis will be joining the Dance department as a teacher. Ms Mavromatis has experience teaching Dance at Davidson High School and has previously been involved with our Dance Academy. Ms Jaimee Kennedy will be going on maternity leave at the end of Term 1. To cover her Sports Administration duties, Ms Kate Seebohm will be moving from part time to full time and Mr James Petering and Mr Jack Gooding will be taking on additional Sports Administration duties.

Reports

Term 1 Approaches to Learning Reports will be available at the end of the term for all students in Yrs 7-12. This report will be the same as the Approaches to Learning Reports which were instituted last year for students in Yrs 7-10. The aim of these reports is to bring parents in to conversations which have already been happening for the past few years between students, teachers and Tutors in tracking students’ effort. Parents will see both student self-reflection and teacher feedback on Engagement, Diligence and Behaviour. There will be no marks, teacher feedback on outcomes, teacher comments or Tutor comments on these reports as these will constitute reports later in the year. More information can be found on the cover pages of this upcoming report.

Congratulations

We want to congratulate Yr 9 students, Theo Mirrless-Black and Harrison Winton, for performing exceptionally well in the Gifted and Talented Discovery Program and Examination. Over 1500 students across Australia in Yrs 8 and 9 sat the examination and both Theo and Harrison placed in the top 5% earning them an opportunity to participate in the Gifted and Talented Discovery Program at Sydney University. Congratulations, Theo and Harrison!

ANZAC Day

Redlands will be participating in the Mosman RSL ANZAC Dawn Service at Georges Heights commencing at 5.30am on 25 April. Two of our senior Prefects will be reciting readings and laying a wreath during the ceremony in commemoration of this solemn day. All members of the community are invited to join us at this dawn service. (Parking is available at Georges Heights, entering from Middle Head Road up Suakin Drive or Best Avenue.)

Secondary School Girls’ Pants (Trousers) Trial

As part of ongoing consultation with students and parents regarding the School uniform, we are trialling Secondary Girls’ Pants (Trousers) this winter, Terms 2 and 3. There are samples at the Uniform Shop.

We will be sending an email to Secondary School students and parents to express their interest in being part of the Girls pants trial by Friday 4 May.

Uniform Shop

Students are reminded that Winter uniform including blazers will be required from the start of Term 2. The Uniform Shop is now fully stocked for all Year Groups and would like to remind parents to check their children’s uniform in case they have outgrown or were new to Redlands in 2018. We are open every weekday except Tuesdays from 8am – 4pm and Thursdays until 6pm.

Blazers requiring embroidery will need to be at the Uniform Shop before 3.30pm on Friday 13 April. As usual, we will have parents collecting blazers outside the Hall following the final assembly on the last day of Term.  Please ensure all blazers are clearly named so they can be dry cleaned before being sent for embroidery.

Holiday opening hours and bookings at the end of Term 1 are 9am – 3pm on Monday 16 April, Thursday 26 April, Friday 27 April and Monday 30 April.   If you wish to come to the Uniform Shop during the holidays, please make an online appointment by clicking here. We will also open the first day of Term 2, Tuesday 1 May at 8am.

International Day

Redlands is a unique community with a wonderful international flavour with many of our students having lived overseas. This generation with the internet, media and travel are very much global citizens. As we celebrate International Day, it is exciting to discover students’ backgrounds and interests.

In Chapel, we have been celebrating with an international focus as well. In the weeks after Jesus resurrection, he tells his disciples that they are not to stay cocooned in their own culture, language and homes but to broaden their perspectives and go to peoples of all nations with the good news about Jesus. The death and resurrection of Jesus was always intended to impact peoples of every nation, language and background. The church has always been a family including people from diverse ethnicity. Christians look forward to a heaven with people of every language, culture, tribe and nation. A place of diversity unified in the God who loves variety.

This is the dream our students all have, that is to live in peace and harmony that celebrates our cultures not ignore our differences. Yet we see that this dream is hard to achieve. Differences in worldview, language and culture can lead to unintended conflict or misunderstandings. In Christ, we have a strength and love to bring differences together and we know that Jesus promised that one day we will see this dream a reality.

Parents who Pray

The dates for these meetings are Fridays 18 May, 15 June, 17 August, 14 September, 26 October, 23 November. All begin at 8.30am. Let me know if you are interested but are unable to attend.

Debating

Congratulations to students in the FED Yr 7B, Yr 8A, Yr 8B, Yr 9 and Senior B teams who all won their debates against Tara last Friday. A special thank you to all the ISDA debaters who replaced students who were in the Musical.

We will resume Debating with Round 7 of ISDA and FED on Friday 4 May (Week 1 of next term).

Yr 9 Camp in Term 2 Week 2

Please note that, as happens every year, students are required to debate on the Friday after they return from Camp. Usually parents from the Year Group coordinate with the students and bring their uniforms. They are permitted to be at the venues in time for prep and do not need to be coached that day. The buses will leave Redlands at 3.45pm but parents are permitted to bring the students directly to the venue. Please advise me in advance if you will be doing this.

Have a lovely break and congratulations on all the quality Debating this term.

Cambodia Service Fundraising

Monday night was the annual Battle of the Bands event in Redlands Hall. It was an amazing night with many great performances. This was the first fundraising activity for all of the students who will be travelling to Cambodia at the end of the year. There were lots of cakes and other baked goods on sale and the Sausage Sizzle was well attended. In total the team raised $3000. These funds are whole group contributions and from here, students will set out to meet their personal fundraising target. All fundraising will be split between the Service project they undertake during their trip and a donation to M’Lop Tapang, who we have a long standing relationship with.

Tanzania Service Fundraising

This Tuesday was International Day and the students traveling to Tanzania organised a successful Sausage Sizzle and cake stall which added to the lunchtime buzz in the Liggins Quad. Students are also personally undertaking fundraising to meet their targets. Some students have already exceed this target and are to be congratulated. All of the funds raised will be used by the students on the Service projects they undertake during their trip in July. $1270 was raised.

Pastoral Care

This week in Tutor Time, students wrote letters of thanks to teachers who they felt went above and beyond to support their studies and wellbeing this term. I had the privilege of delivering these letters and it was a great reminder of the vast array of exceptional teachers we have on staff at Redlands. It was also pleasing to see that amid the tail end of a marathon term, students were still keen and able to take a moment to express gratitude. This is a positive mindset to be in as they enter the holidays. It is important that students view the holidays as a time of consolidation and preparation. As no academic content is being added to their plates, they can review, refine and refer to their study guides for the upcoming Half Yearly Examinations in the first two weeks of next term.

Training for the Half Yearly Examinations

Below are some reminders for parents to pass on throughout the next four weeks to assist and support students with their independent consolidation and preparation at home.

The Pomodoro Technique

This technique can increase in motivation and productivity. It is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. The technique uses a timer to break down work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks. These intervals are named pomodoros, the plural in English of the Italian word pomodoro (tomato), after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer that Cirillo used as a university student. The technique has been widely popularised by dozens of apps and websites providing timers and instructions. Closely related to concepts such as timeboxing and iterative and incremental development used in software design, the method has been adopted in pair programming contexts. It is essentially interval training for your brain which can increase endurance and focus also.

Recommended Hours of Study: Dr Prue Salter

The recommended amount of regular study for senior students, is about 2-3 hours per day and probably about 6 hours on the weekend. In the last two weeks before examinations, students will want to increase this amount slightly, both during the week and on weekends. In the holidays we would expect that weekly personal study hours may increase slightly more as more time through the day becomes available. Of course, these are just suggested guidelines. Some people will do more, some will do less. This is just to give you a ballpark figure of what students on average would be doing.

Feeding the Brain

Nourishing the brain is another advantage entering exam time preparation. A nourished brain will increase learning capability, increase memory, decrease fatigue and maintain mood.

Eat Breakfast Breaking the overnight ‘fast’ provides glucose which is the brains major energy source.

Clinical studies show energy intake at breakfast was associated with lower fatigue, higher overall mood, increased alertness. If you are not a ‘breakfast person’ try eating something – a piece of fruit, a slice of toast with avocado, a small tub of yoghurt. Then eat well at recess. For example, a wholemeal roll with chicken, cheese and salad.

Stay Hydrated Even mild dehydration can interfere with concentration, alertness and memory. Aiming towards two litres of water per day will keep you well hydrated. Start the morning with a big glass of water and then again during breaks at school, during sport, when you get home and after dinner. Herbal teas are included in water quantity.

Eat Low GI CarbsGlucose is the brain’s major energy source so refuelling on good carbohydrates keeps the brain functioning optimally. Low GI food releases energy slower and maintains glucose levels while high GI food releases energy quicker. While high GI food works well pre-exercise, when preparing for exams low GI food not only provides a steady glucose flow to the brain, its slow release manages hunger pains. A recent clinical study saw people who ate a low GI breakfast felt more alert, less nervous and less hungry. Swap high GI food to low GI food.

Eat Protein Daily Protein provides amino acids, the building blocks vital for the synthesis of brain chemicals required for learning, mood and memory. Include food in the list below in each meal. Foods high in protein include lean beef, lamb, pork, chicken, turkey, tuna, salmon, eggs, milk, yoghurt, cheese, sunflower seeds, tofu, edamame beans, lentils, chickpeas, pinto beans, kidney beans.

Replenish Key Nutrients for the Brain –  The brain requires specific nutrients to stay healthy. Omega 3 group (EPA/DHA) – cannot be made in the body and must be supplied through food. The critical role of the Omega 3 group involves optimising the structure and function of each cell and found in abundance in the brain. Food high in omega 3 include salmon, sardines, tuna, mackerel, walnuts – a recent clinical study saw increased inferential reasoning in young adults, chia seeds – sprinkle on cereal, as a chia pudding served with berries and yoghurt or add to a smoothie, vitamin D – a recent clinical study saw improved visual memory in people with adequate amounts of vitamin D. Another study reported adequate levels of vitamin D as important for higher levels of cognitive functioning. Best source of vitamin D is responsible daily exposure to the sun. Food sources include veal, beef, egg yolks, liver, salmon and sardines.

Year 8

General

We have reached the end of a long, exciting and challenging term. I congratulate Yr 8 students on completing the term with a positive attitude, a skip in their step, and seemingly far less exhaustion than one might expect!

With camp, the Musical, International Day, swimming carnival, extra-curricular activities, representative sport and a host of other activities and commitments, we have managed to squeeze a great deal into the first term of the year. I wish all Yr 8 students and their families a restful and rejuvenating holiday, and look forward to seeing them next term for another busy, exciting and challenging 9 weeks!

International Day

On Tuesday, Redlands celebrated International Day. In Tutor period, students have completed an activity on the UN Declaration of Human Rights, and on International Day students enjoyed an international-themed assembly and incursion, in which they learned about Australian Aboriginal culture, and a number of other activities. In addition, we had some some students in amazing international dress! A special congratulations to Amelie Heard and Callum Wardman-Browne for taking out the costume competition for Yr 8!

News
  • Thank you to all Tutors and Ms Abigail Walker for their support throughout Term 1.
  • It is important that students clear and clean their lockers before the end of term.
  • Winter Uniform is to be worn from the start of Term 2. Details can be found in the Student Planner.
  • This term we have sadly said farewell to Kiara van Graan, Samantha Rietbroke and Marley Mendoza (all have moved overseas). We wish them and their families the best of luck on their new adventures.
  • All students have received their School Photo packs. If you missed your order or you are wanting to order more photos, students can collect their personal order information from the Year Advisors Office in A Block (Secondary School Office).
End of Term 1

Ms Walker, Tutors and I congratulate all students (parents too) for making it through their first term of Secondary School! There have been new friendships, changed friendships, laughter and sometimes tears as students have tackled the challenges of Secondary School and the vast change to their routine. All students should be proud of their efforts and we hope they thoroughly enjoy a much-needed rest over the holidays. The next two weeks will provide a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the successes and challenges of Term 1, considering how students can adapt their habits and continue developing their organisation, social and study skills learnt in in their first 11 weeks of their high school journey. Useful resources:

International Day

Tuesday was a resounding success and it was fantastic to see so many Yr 7s making the effort to wear costume. Notable mention goes to William Byron’s French attire, Douglas Mantell’s Scottish wig and hat, Alex Scotting’s Japanese judo gear, and Cleophe Eliatamby who won best costume in Yr 7. The International Day Prefect’s Assembly was entertaining and informative – Oliver Kesby won the Secondary School Commonwealth Games True/False competition. Last Friday, students completed an activity on the Declaration of Human Rights during Pastoral Care.

Musical

I was completely overwhelmed by the commitment and unprecedented involvement of Yr 7 in the 2018 musical Return to the Forbidden Planet. Students sang, danced and acted their way through the rock songs of the 1960s seeing the audience clapping and bopping along. Congratulations to Lucy Horton for being the recipient of the 2018 Yr 7 Stanislavski Award.

Battle of the Bands

Well done to Sam Chubb, Joseph Irvine, Oliver Wood, Holly Gallagher, Ophelia Jackson, Sophia Leon-Searle and Tom Wang of Yr 7 who completed in Battle of the Bands on Monday night. Holly, Ophelia, Sophia and Tom won their division performing The Pretender by The Foo Fighters.

Theatresports

It was a joy to join all players at the Theatresports Competition on Tuesday night as the Technique Judge. I was blown away by the standard of performance from all students. Jess Marshall, Sienna Wessels, Issy Treloar, Catarina Croll, Bella Zeppel, Holly Gallagher, Claudia Lalich and Fraya Gait represented Yr 7. Stand out moment from Yr 7 was Bella Zeppel beating up a lion who stole her hamburger in the game Death in a Minute

Head of Junior School

Redlands Musical

Like many in our Redlands community, it was a pleasure for me to attend last week’s Secondary School Musical, Return to the Forbidden Planet. Whether on stage, backstage or in the Music pit, the collaborative experience of being part of a production of this magnitude will leave long-lasting memories for the students involved, many of whom I remember fondly from their time with us in the Junior School. I am sure that the many Junior School students in attendance may also have been inspired to be part of future musicals too and congratulations to Mrs Daley and her team of staff, parent and student helpers and supporters on delivering a wonderful show.

International Day

Our School’s diversity was on display this week as School celebrated our annual International Day amidst a sea of colour as students dressed up in either national costume or national colours. It was also wonderful to see many parents in school sharing their international backgrounds and experiences, which added significantly to the richness of the day. Year Groups also enjoyed incorporated international perspectives in curriculum lessons.

Battle of the Bands Rock Group

On Monday night, our four Junior School rock bands joined counterparts in the Secondary School to take part in the annual Battle of the Bands event with proceeds going towards the School’s Cambodia Service trip later in the year. Despite one or two nerves, Coordinator of Music, Mr Kuilenburg, shared how impressive the groups were and how supported they were by friends, family and Secondary students too.

Chess Team

On Wednesday, our Chess team enjoyed a splendid day of competition this week against ten other Schools in a competition hosted by Abbotsleigh Girls School. Overall, the team placed a very creditable 3rd place in a strong field with Isaac Brooks placing 1st from our Redlands players. Particular mention to our Captains, Conor Petersen and Will Andrew, who led our teams with great responsibility and Mrs Wiebe also commented on how wonderful ambassadors of the School they team were.

Girls’ Winter School Uniform – Pants (Trousers) Trial

As we move into Winter uniform from Term 2, which includes School blazers, I am pleased to share that Redlands will be trialling an option for Junior and Secondary School girls to wear dark navy pants in the Winter uniform.

This Winter’s trial will be used in order to develop the final Redlands pants style and can be viewed at the School Uniform Shop, opening hours are in the section below.

A separate communication from the Deputy Principal, Ms McGarry, will be sent to all families before the end of term to gauge interest and once we have finalised the number of students to trial the pant styles, the Uniform Shop will order them.

Time for a Rest

As always, Term 1 has been an important starting point for the students in a new school year and it has been immensely heartening to see much challenge in learning, growth and progress amongst the students in a range of different areas of school life. Time for reflection is important and I do encourage you to talk to your child about what it is they have felt most proud of this term or what has challenged them. If appropriate, do provide this feedback to their teachers too.

A hallmark of any good school is its busyness in many areas and no one could ever say that Redlands did not meet this measure. Hence, it is also important for students and teachers to rest too in this upcoming fortnight break, particularly in this longer-than-normal term of eleven weeks.

I wish everyone a restful break and safe travels, where taken, and we look forward to welcoming the students back in Winter uniform on Tuesday 1 May.

Sydney Swans AFL

Yrs 1 and 2 had a wonderful time last Friday when representatives from the Sydney Swans came to Redlands to take students through some AFL drills. All students enjoyed their session and we look forward to welcoming them back next year for some more fun.

Yr 1 Camp Out

One of my favourite events on the Prep School calendar is the Yr 1 Camp Out. This is not because I am an avid camper or enjoy sleeping at school, it is because of the joy that comes from watching the interactions between the children and their parent, grandparent or other family member. The weather was glorious and all campers enthusiastically participated in a series of activities that were designed to improve wellbeing, resilience and strengthen family bonds. These included music and games, story and memory sharing, acknowledging children for their strengths and qualities, and sharing meals. Thanks must go to Ms Finlayson, the Yr 1 team, Prep Administration, Facilities team, Junior Canteen and Prep staff for their wonderful organisation and assistance to make this event possible. To the parents and carers who attended the event, thank you for your support and for giving your children memories that will last forever.

“On Friday, we had Camp Out. I came with my dad. I played with Enrico, Charlotte and Sash, then Charlotte and I went to our tent. We were so surprised when we saw it and went inside and it felt like we were inside a gigantic castle. Then Zara, Charlotte and I ate a whole packet of chocolate fingers, they were so delicious. After that we made a circle outside and played some games. We played birdie in the nest, it was so much fun. Later we went and made a card for our grown up and they made one for us. I really liked what my dad said about me. We then went to Dunnet Hall and played tunnel ball. I have never played it before. This was the best Camp Out ever, it was so much fun”. Florence Chalmers, One Silver

Yr 2 Curriculum Strings

Monday afternoon provided a wonderful performance opportunity for the Yr 2 cohort as they all performed at Strings in the Piazza. It was a joyous affair enjoyed immensely by all performers and audience members alike. We would like to thank the students for putting in so much hard work, specialist Music tutors, class teachers and the parents for their support. A special mention must go out to the Advanced String Ensemble who led the finale, Oh When the Saints, supported by a rousing Parent Chorus. The Music Department extends particular thanks to MIC of Strings; Mr Michael Warby, for his management and overseeing of this extension instrumental program.

School Musical – Return to the Forbidden Planet

Last Thursday, I attended opening night of the School’s performance of Return to The Forbidden Planet.  Secondary students acted, danced and sang their way through a musical that has been compared to William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, with characters, plot and certain analogues found in the play. With memorable music favourites including Great Balls of Fire, Good Vibrations and Teenager in Love, the more mature audience members were tapping their feet and singing along! Congratulations to the Drama, Music and Dance Departments for giving the community another remarkable example of the talent of both staff and students at Redlands.

International Day

Thank you to all those who participated in International Day. The colourful array of costumes from all around the world was just beautiful and showed the diversity of culture we are so fortunate to have at Redlands. The Prep students enjoyed the performance of Indigenous Storyteller Matthew Doyle.

Happy Holidays

It has been an industrious and happy first term for the students of Prep. What a delight it has been to watch the deep learning and growth in abilities of the students in only 11 weeks of school. I have valued all your feedback and ongoing support, and further encourage you to continue the open communication between staff and school, as we work in partnership for the positive outcomes of the students. Musical- Return to the Forbidden Planet

Congratulations to all the students who were part of the wonderful success of this year’s spectacular Musical Return to the Forbidden Planet. Whether the students were on stage, under the stage, side of stage or working with puppets, they gave their very best, learning many new skills and making many strong friendships across Year Groups. These wonderful experiences could not have taken place without the support and assistance of so many people which enabled our Redlands stars to create a dazzling galaxy.

Mrs Daley and the Musical staff team would like to thank the parents, especially Melissa Fleming and Elena Burchett, who contributed in so many ways through this project with the Friends of Drama parent team of volunteers. More photos can be found on Redlands Pulse.

Battle of the Bands (Cambodia Fundraiser)

Battle of the Bands is a fundraising event that showcases the contemporary elements of the Redlands Music program and provides emerging young artists with the opportunity to perform in a live context. In support of the Redlands Rock Program Yrs 5-12, this competition is designed for students to extend their performance abilities in small ensemble contexts. As a fundraising opportunity, this concert connects the wider school community and supports the Redlands Service program where students have the opportunity to experience the culture of Cambodia first-hand. Our outstanding hosts for the evening were Stella Everett (Captain of Choirs), Michelle Li (Captain of Strings), Marvin Ma (Captain of Bands) and James Nemec (Captain of Small Ensembles). Photos can be found on Redlands Pulse.

This year’s competition was adjudicated by Ms Emily Hanks, a Soul, Pop, R&B, Funk, Blues and Jazz specialist. Awarded a Bachelor of Music Performance through the Australian Institute of Music, Ms Hanks has graced the stage of many prestigious Sydney performance venues, including appearances at the Thredbo Jazz Festival, SoulFest and the Office Earth Hour with Peter Garrett.

The Music Department would like to acknowledge the contributions of Ms Arienne Brodie (MIC Performance) and Rock Band Specialists Mr Ross Ferraro, Mr Diego Idarrago Mr Nathaniel Smith and Mr David Wooltorton for mentoring and supporting finalists in this competition. From a technical perspective, thanks to Mr Janis Auzins, Ms Alex James and Tom Wightwick in delivering spectacular sound and lighting. We are grateful for the wonderful administrative support provided by Ms Pip Tame and our facilities teams led by Mrs Liz Loveridge and Mr Rod Loveridge.

In managing the logistics of this popular school community event, we would like to acknowledge the Cambodia staff team led by Mr Nick Walker, Ms Kria Coleman, Ms Paula Reinhold, Mr Michael Warrell and various student volunteers who managed ticket sales, event promotion and the overseeing of fundraising stalls. Altogether, the 2018 Cambodia team raised over $3000 with the funds set aside to improve the quality of life of disadvantaged children and their families in Cambodia.

Junior and Senior Piano Competition – entries close Wednesday 9 May

Auditions dates are on Redlands Pulse. Audition forms can be collected from the Music offices or downloaded from Redlands Pulse. The audition process will require students to demonstrate advanced technical skills, personal expression and understanding of style. It is expected that students present works demonstrating a high standard of musical competency. Please note only one piece is required for the audition with the second contrasting piece listed on the application form.

Senior Campus
Senior Music FestivalBach to the Beatles

Auditions are open to Yr 11 and 12 students who participate in both Academic Music classes and the Cocurricular Music Ensembles program. The 2018 Senior Music Festival will be presenting a diverse range of repertoire including Johann Sebastian Bach’s Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring and a wide selection of music from The Beatles, while exploring various styles of music from Chamber through to Contemporary Music. While students will have the opportunity to present repertoire from their Higher School Certificate or International Baccalaureate Performance portfolio, there may also be the opportunity to be considered for various solo opportunities that feature within larger ensemble works. Audition Forms and Information Packs will be available from Senior Music Reception from Wednesday 11 April (Week 11).

Ensemble Attendance

Students are reminded about the importance of regular attendance to all Music Ensemble rehearsals and in meeting goals set at the start of the year in reaching a high standard of performance excellence. Morning rehearsals commence at 7.15am and students should be moving to rehearsal rooms by 7.10am. Absence due to camp and/or illness will be the only accepted reason for non-attendance. It is essential that you contact seniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au if you are unable to attend any rehearsals.

Music Instrument Lockers

Due to major works being completed in the Music Centre over the coming holiday period, all students are required to empty their Music Locker on the Senior Campus by 4.00pm on Friday 13 April.

Junior Campus
Junior Voices Chapel Performance

Last week, Junior Voices were invited to perform at the Yrs 9-10 Secondary School Easter Reflection Service. Performing a piece titled Celebrate the Empty Tomb, the students incorporated the playing of hand bells as instrumental accompaniment to their singing. Their presentation was highly polished and demonstrated excellent choral singing skills. The Secondary School Chaplin, Mrs Bronwyn Lihou, commented “the students sang beautifully and were delightful and it was evident that Secondary School students certainly engaged with the performance and were very appreciative of this musical item”.

Yr 2 Curriculum Strings

Monday afternoon provided a wonderful performance opportunity for the Yr 2 cohort as they all performed at Strings in the PiazzaIt was a joyous affair enjoyed immensely by all performers and audience members alike. We would like to thank the students for putting in so much hard work, specialist Music tutors, class teachers and the parents for their support. The Music Department extends particular thanks to MIC of Strings Mr Michael Warby for his management and overseeing of this extension instrumental program.

As we near the end of term, there are many further opportunities to consider in extending student learning on their string instrument. Private instrumental lessons provide children with the opportunity to progress their technical skills with the challenges in playing solo repertoire. Private Music Tuition also provides students with the opportunity to enrol into various Instrumental Ensembles. Students having private lessons and performing with the Yr 2 Advanced Ensemble are encouraged to join Preparatory Strings which rehearses on Monday mornings from 7.45-8.15am in the Prep Music Room. If you have any queries about the string program please contact Junior Music.

Secondary Sport

From the Head of Sport: What is failure in sport?

I think it is natural for a young athlete to experience the fear of failing in sport, after all, sports are usually held in a public areas with spectators full of parents, peers and friends. Results are often publicised and displayed for many to see, analyse and comment. Combine this with open public practices and training sessions. Sport is an activity where your effort, and your outcomes from that effort are visible for all to see.

However, how do we define “failure” in sport? And what does this mean to you?

Many see failure as an ‘uncomfortable’ word and closely associate it with losing or achieving a lower place than a previous year. These measurements of success or failure do not take into account the growth and development of a young athletes are generally based on external factors such as other competitors.

To me, the true definition of failure in sport is ‘not fulfilling your potential’.

A great quote by author Daniel H. Pink reflects this sentiment, “The greater risk is to fear failure more than mediocrity for yourself. To give up through fear of failure on being the best you can possibly be in your chosen pursuits.“

To know what your best is, to know how to improve your best and to continue to learn how to improve your best, is a true description of success.

This learning process is observable in the way many athletes approach their training.  There is a willing attitude and drive to perfect their abilities. If results, games or times are not as the athlete had hoped, a thinking process immediately begins. The best example of this pattern of thinking is seen in para-athletes, where traditional techniques of a sport or skill may not be appropriate for the individual’s particular learning environment.

Athletes must be able to find a solution to their problems, and come to know how they can improve in the best way forward. If they cannot find an answer or solution, then they should start questioning the coach … relentlessly.

Athletes have a drive to invest effort in order to improve over and over. These are great qualities to have and can be developed through sport and applied to many other life skills.

Being a school based athlete is the perfect time and place to adopt this approach of learning and development. Perceived “failures” are important ingredients to growth.

Sport is not a level playing field and sometimes athletes may feel they are the best they can be and still lose the competition. However, the lessons learnt through self-exploration are more valuable than the medal or a ribbon.

“Success is not built on success. It’s built on failure. It’s built on frustration. Sometimes it’s built on catastrophe.”  Sumner Redstone.

Football

On Saturday , the Boys Football program travelled to Chevalier College for their gala day with a number of other travelling teams. The First XI had their first game against Redfield during the heat of the day and with only 11 players. The first game started with high hopes and good spirits and by the end of the game, we had secured our first win of the season, 2-0. Our second game was against Blue Mountains who were our opponents in the ISA Grand Final last year. The game was long and tiring for us all and ended in a stalemate of 0-0.

Hockey

The 1st XI and 2nd XI Hockey teams played a trial game against Barker College on Saturday. The 1sts played against a very strong Barker team, and despite going down in a loss, it was a well fought game by the girls. The 2nds had a great win over Barker College in what was a great team effort. It was a fantastic opportunity for the girls to play together before the start of the season next term. Congratulations to both teams.

Netball

The NSNA season began on Saturday. It was great to get the games underway in what was some hot conditions down at Willoughby Leisure Centre. A big thank you to Isobel Moseley (Yr 8) and Charlotte Harman (Yr 8) who helped out with the NSNA 9 Gold team on the weekend after their own game!

Redlands Friends of Netball will be having their first meeting on Tuesday 8 May at 6.00pm (room L1.3). If you are interested in being part of the Friends of Netball please email Karen Kerr redlandsfon@gmail.com.

Best of luck to Jemma Donoghue (Yr 12) who will spend the first week of the holidays in Adelaide with the NSW U17 Netball team for the National Netball Championships. A fantastic effort to make the team and we look forward to hearing how she goes in Adelaide.

Rugby

On the weekend the Redlands Open Squad travelled to Bowral to take on Chevalier College and also Daramalan across two trial matches in what would be their first match contact for the preseason. In the first game against a strong touring side from Canberra, the Redlands squad did not disappoint showing all the structures that we have brought in over these last few weeks as the moved the ball quickly and effectively to win comfortably 4-0. Against a strong Chevalier side, some poor discipline and rushed decisions allowed Chevalier to have too much possession across the trial match with the Redlands squad suffering a loss 4-1. Ultimately, coming out of a trial weekend with the final score across the two games of 5-4, is a win for Redlands. The noticeable difference between the two squads across each game also was encouraging, seeing certain boys stamp their authority over the game almost demanding a starting 1st XV jersey. A great weekend for Redlands.
