Issue 10 2020 - 02 Apr 2020

From the Principal

I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo. “So do I said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But it is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” J.R.R. Tolkein, The Fellowship of the Ring

This quote was recently shared with me and it resonated in terms of our current focus as a school community as well as the inherent hope it inspires.

Our staff have responded admirably to the challenge of quickly setting up remote learning programs and collaborating creatively to explore new ways of connecting and supporting our students and families.

I have enjoyed being involved in a range of settings; from observing Year 11 Design Technology students presenting their futuristic home designs set in 2070, to Tutor group discussions, meeting online with the Prefect body, to being invited to see the work of our Preschool students through Storypark. I have been impressed by the way that the students have made the most of the opportunities to continue their learning and engage with the curriculum through alternative methods.

I am also looking forward to next Wednesday’s virtual Easter Hat Parade in the Prep School and Redlands House, especially as the students are being encouraged to reuse and recycle items in their home in the creation of their hats. It will no doubt be a creative and colourful last day of term.

I appreciated the opportunity to join a number of the Secondary School parent Zoom sessions and look forward to the Junior Campus sessions planned for next week. Throughout the School we have been exploring ways to connect and it has been wonderful to see a wide range of cocurricular activities moving into the online space to enable students to continue with their programs.

I reiterate my thanks to all parents and carers for your ongoing support and understanding and for your most useful feedback, that has enabled us to continually strive to improve our programs in a time that has required us to be more adaptable and agile.

The most impressive aspect for me has been the constant care and concern expressed by our staff for the students. It is certainly not the same without the daily personal connection and the sounds of joy and laughter on the campuses; however, we have aimed to make it as positive a learning experience as possible.

It has been wonderful to witness the real sense of partnership in our community at this time. I especially thank the RPFA members and Parent Year Group Coordinators for continuing to build connections and foster relationships in our community, and for providing support to individual families.

I encourage all families to continue to provide your feedback in the short survey that will be sent to you tomorrow. This includes a question about any additional support you would like from either the School or the broader Redlands community.

Mr Stephen Webber

Reunion of Class of 1990 – Postponed but Celebrated

Due to the current situation, the 30 Year Reunion has been postponed. In the absence of this event, we would like to remind our community that in this period of early 1990’s Redlands saw the first cohort of IB students preparing for their final examinations in what was then, Year 13 (the year after HSC students had graduated).

The Junior School (previously Cremorne Girls High school) also opened to students, expanding the size of our School. We are grateful for the generosity of previous generations who supported the School to make this happen.

“It was exciting to be a student in Yr 12 at Redlands in 1990 when the Cremorne Campus was opened by the Premier of NSW. It was inspiring to learn alongside the first IB students as they undertook their HSC and IB at the same time and went on to complete Yr 13. We were blessed with wonderful teachers and school executive who led us well and inspired us long after graduation. Redlands was a vibrant and warm school community that I can see now as a parent of the school, continues to this day”. Annie Flynn (Taylor), School Captain 1990, current Redlands parent and a member of the Redlanders Committee

Remote Learning and Teaching

It was great to see many of you at our Parent Zoom meetings on Monday and Tuesday this week. We hope these webinars were useful for you to hear how we are approaching this move to a remote educational environment in the Secondary School. Recordings of these videos can be found on Redlands Pulse under the relevant Year Group and in each Year Advisor’s Note Day article this week. As stated in these meetings, we truly appreciate your feedback during this time as we continually review, assess and improve our approaches as we strive to deliver the best educational outcomes to our students. While we aimed to address as many of your questions as possible in the “chat room” of these webinars, if you have further questions or comments, we encourage you to continue to provide feedback through feedback@redlands.nsw.edu.au and to also regularly check the School’s COVID-19 Information Page for further updates.

As stated in these webinars, over the last few weeks we have undergone a transformation of how we are delivering our academic, Cocurricular and Pastoral programs in the Secondary School. And while remote learning will not be exactly the “same” as face to face learning, we are encouraged and excited to see how we are still able to deliver our high quality educational programs in new and, sometimes even, improved formats.

Some of the highlights I have observed over the past week are:

  • Teachers regularly getting in touch with me to share how a specific lesson or activity actually worked better when they transformed it into the remote learning environment using iLearn and/or Zoom.
  • How so many of our cocurricular activities, including Sports, Music, Drama and Dance, have quickly moved to online delivery so that students can continue to immerse themselves in these activities outside of the classroom – activities which bring them so much joy and fulfilment. (We are looking forward to trialling remote delivery of other clubs and activities, such as Debating, in the coming weeks.)
  • How we are finding different ways to provide pastoral care and support to our students during this time to keep them connected to school. (I would encourage students and parents to go to the recently published Counselling Space on iLearn which has a wealth of valuable resources.)
  • Students (and many teachers) getting in the spirit of International Day with their mufti day attire on Tuesday.
  • Personally, seeing how I can facilitate more timely and direct check-ins with students in my Yr 7 English class via individual or small group Zoom meetings and break out rooms.

As stated in the parent meetings earlier this week, we are continuing to review elements of our program such as the daily schedule, home learning, specific lesson delivery/structure, pastoral support programs and assessments, so that students get the most out of their remote learning. The Independent Learning Day on Wednesday was an example of how we are trialling different approaches based on staff, student and parent feedback, as well as research of other schools’ and school systems’ experiences and best practice, both in Australia and around the world. We encourage all students and parents to continue to provide further feedback in new surveys which will be sent around later in the week.

Below are some further reminders about how you can assist your son or daughter in this remote learning and teaching environment:

  • Use the tips from the Remote Learning Infographic which can be found on the Secondary School Page of Redlands Pulse to prepare and support students for remote learning.
  • Reinforce school and learning expectations at home with your child, in particular, our Responsible User Guidelines of technology. With greater usage of technology by students, it is more important now than ever that they are following these, and the School will take very seriously any breaches of these expectations. The Guidelines are:
    • It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure the online space is a safe place to learn and connect.
    • Students should not share their log in details, password or Zoom meeting ID with anyone.
    • Students should not enter classes that are not assigned to them.
    • If you have any concerns or questions about this, you can email your Tutor, Year Advisor, Dean of Students or iSupport.
    • As you are spending more time online, you should re-familiarise yourself with the Redlands ICT Responsible User Guidelines that can be found on page 26 in the Student Planner.
    • Any breaches of these rules are treated extremely seriously and the Dean of Students and Head of Secondary School will follow up with students and families of those involved.
    • Students are also encouraged to stand up and stretch in between classes and have a break from your screen whenever possible.
  • If you have any concerns about how your child is coping with the move to this remote learning environment, we would ask you in the first instance to make contact with a specific teacher if the concern is in a specific subject, or the Tutor if the concern is more holistic.
  • While I know many parents have enjoyed having a greater insight into their child’s learning over the past few weeks, we would ask parents to ensure they are not directly involving themselves in academic lessons. Parents should not be present in these lessons as we want to ensure a safe learning space for all students.

As stated in our parent meetings, we are so proud of how the students are handling this move to remote learning and teaching; however, we also cannot wait to see them in person on the Campus in (what we hope will be) the not so distant future.

Cross Country Carnival

As stated last week, while the Secondary School Cross Country Carnival had to be cancelled today, we are still encouraging students to participate remotely in our virtual Inter-House Cross Country Carnival. Not only is it a great way to stay active and fit during this time of physical distancing, but students can also earn points for their House. I have signed up myself and it has been great to read the various posts and see people submitting their runs to the Redlands page. (I have been sharing feedback from my runs with my dog, Leo, with the group!) Further information can be found on the Sport iLearn page and on Redlands Pulse.

Yr 11 Parent Teacher Night

Yesterday evening we held our regularly scheduled Yr 11 Parent/Teacher Night remotely via Zoom video conferences. We appreciate this was another significant change to our usual practice of parent/teacher meetings; however, we wanted to provide the opportunity for teachers, parents and students to engage in valuable conversations about student learning at this important juncture of Yr 11. We would encourage Yr 11 parents to send through any specific feedback on the evening via feedback@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Staffing Update

As we come to the end of the term, I wanted to update our community on a few staffing changes. As many of you are aware, Ms Kristy Walker has commenced her maternity leave towards the end of this term, and we thank Ms Sahya Saheki for covering her classes during these past few weeks. We are pleased to welcome Ms Ashleigh Johnson to cover Ms Kristy Walker’s maternity leave for the remainder of the year. Ms Johnson has five years’ experience teaching Dance to Secondary School students in the NSW system.

In addition, after 13 years as a valued History teacher, Tutor and Year Advisor, Ms Emma Bergin will leave us at the end of this term to take up a position as Subject Coordinator of History at Queenwood commencing in Term 2. We wish Ms Bergin all the best as she moves into this new leadership position. We are pleased to announce that Mr Luke Cantrill will be returning to Redlands to fill Ms Bergin’s position from the beginning of Term 2. Mr Cantrill is a familiar face to many Redlands students as he taught History in the Secondary School covering a leave position last year. Mr Cantrill has also taught History at a number of other independent schools in Sydney.

Easter is Cancelled

I got an email a couple of weeks ago confirming Easter is cancelled or at least your Easter Service is cancelled. Then one thing after the other was either cancelled or in short supply. I am sure you can relate. Thoughts of ‘we can do this’, ‘we are grateful’ to ‘this is hard’, ‘uncertainty is unsettling’ to ‘this too shall pass’ swirl in our minds. We acknowledge that people in our community are impacted to varying degrees at this time.

Whatever your current thinking and feelings are, some things are certain, some things do not change. Things are different this year but not that different.

The question remains can you really cancel Easter? The answer simply put is no. The Easter message of love, joy and hope is constant and relevant. Easter celebrates the death and resurrection of Jesus. It is the acknowledgement of the connection and peace with God that this sacrifice brings. Gratitude for this sacrifice while celebrated at Easter can be a daily exercise in thankfulness. Jesus who does not change offers peace, forgiveness, new beginnings, calm, guidance and direction.

As part of our Easter reflection as a community this year let us celebrate our connections and hope.

We celebrate the love of God and we also see the value in loving others. It has been wonderful to see people in our community support each other. Staff, students and families alike are keen to ‘let their light shine.’ Hopefully while some things we may choose to leave behind from this season, caring for each other deeply will not be one of them.

Heartwarming stories of connection have been seen all over the world – people supporting an older neighbour, music in Italian streets shared over balconies, international flags projected on Brazil’s Christ the Redeemer statue – in prayerful solidarity of the global pandemic or musicians using technology to put a new spin on an old classic hymn. Each person has their own tale to tell.

Like all departments at school, the Christian Studies Department has been looking at how we can connect and meet the needs of our students and community at this time. Learning has continued and we have been receiving creative work from Lego Last Supper creations, to Chapel songs with dancing and bubbles, to beautiful Bible covers designed, and questions engaged with genuine curiosity and thought. We look forward to continuing that connection in Term 2.

For those of you who want to ‘attend’ an Easter service but are not sure where to go please see the links below to our local Anglican churches. Most churches have some kind of online presence at this time.

Thank you to those parents who joined the Zoom Meeting on Monday evening. It was lovely to see your faces and read your comments as the session progressed. I would like to reiterate that I am here for your children at this uncertain time. If you would like Mr Walker, your child’s Tutor or myself to check in with your child, please do not hesitate to ask. As I mentioned briefly during the webinar, I will be working between home and school so email is the best initial contact method.

Below are two links that you might find useful to share with your child at this time.

The first link is from Glen Gerreyn, who facilitated the Day of Hope that our Yr 11s took so much away from. The article is titled How to Help Students Cope with Change and he addresses this through the following topics

  • Find your anchor
  • Fix your focus to cope with change
  • Look for opportunities to pivot or adapt

Pastoral Care Program

We are almost two weeks into remote learning. Now that students have had the opportunity to establish good habits at home, Tutor Time will become less about completing formal activities and more of an opportunity for students to interact with each other. Students will have the opportunity to check-in with their Tutor and chat with theTutor Group.

Tutor Time will continue to start at 10.30am via Zoom and will run for 20 minutes. However, students are welcome to stay with their group for the remaining 10 minutes.

  • Tutors will say hello to students each day. They may run some fun activities to allow interactions to take place between everyone in the Tutor Group.
  • Suggested activities will be provided. Tutor Groups can also come up with their own activities.
  • Chapel will be held each Friday. Everyone will attend their Tutor Group Zoom meeting when they will watch a message from our Secondary School Chaplain. Students can then opt to either complete Chapel reflection questions provided or step away from their screens prior to Period 3.

Thank you all for your feedback. We can assure you that all feedback is considered as we continue to navigate this new style of teaching and make adjustments to enhance our remote learning experience for students, parents and teachers.

Secondary School Counselling on iLearn

Parent Reading: Maintaining Parent Wellbeing

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has disrupted all of our lives. Parenting a teenager can be challenging at the best of times, but for some, this upheaval in our social, work and school life may make things even more difficult. While you’re trying to support your teen through all the changes, it’s easy to forget about yourself. However, by prioritising your own wellbeing, you’ll feel better and be more able to support your teen. ReachOut Parents offers some advice on how parents can maintain their own wellbeing during coronavirus.

This Week

It was wonderful to see so many parents take part in the Yr 8 Zoom parent meeting on Tuesday evening. A lot of positive and invaluable feedback has been shared for us to reflect on our program and make changes as we move forward. Thank you for all of your support from home and we have been truly impressed with the self-management of our students. We continue to look for ways for students to stay socially connected as we learn remotely and further information will come out to students through the Yr 8 Pastoral page and Tutor classes.

Also remember that the support services we have in place here at Redlands are detailed on page 12 of the Student Planner. Students can access their Tutors, Year Advisors, Dean of Students, Counsellors or Chaplain if they would like further support from school at this time. They can email the teachers directly, or wellbeing@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Yr 8 Pastoral Program Updates

The following information was sent to students this week as a quick reminder while learning from home.

Tutor Reminders

Zoom in at 10.30am through Tutor iLearn page Monday – Thursday
Zoom in at 10.30am through the Yr 8 Pastoral Page on Fridays
Tutor will end at 10.50am each day.

Wellness Reminders

Use the ten minutes between your lessons to quickly stand up, move around, stretch, get a glass of water, run to the restroom and re-set.

Use earphones to help focus and zone out other noise. Earphones also ensure your conversation is kept within the classroom.

Ensure you do something active each day for 20-30 minutes (this week join the Redlands Sports Department for the 5km Challenge with your Strava app).

Spend as much time as possible outside of lessons away from your screens. Call your buddy and have a phone conversation or interact with your family members.

Study Reminders

Set a timer for the start of each lesson to ensure you use your break fully and login at the start of your lessons.

Set out your clothing and your books for each day’s lessons the night before. That way, you just need to grab the piles and get started in the morning.

Make a “to do” list in your Student Planner so you don’t forget to complete or submit important items/tasks assigned to you.

SchoolTV

Special Reports from SchoolTV provides parents and caregivers with some guidelines on how best to navigate this time of transition with minimal disruption.

Online Study Skills

Please click on this link for tips from setting up your space at home for learning to templates for daily checklists and strategies for maintaining focus at home. This guide is being updated on a daily basis and is a great resource for students and parents. There is a lot of information out there about working from home, but it is often not tailored specifically to the needs of secondary students. You will also find links to lots of online learning resources as well as resources for stress management, such as this great video from Human Connections.

Remote Learning and Pastoral Care

As students continue to settle into remote learning, I thank you all for the support, patience and feedback (feedback@redlands.nsw.edu.au) you have provided.

On Redlands Pulse you will find an infographic providing not only some useful tips for students to assist with remote learning, but outlines the changed timetable to allow greater breaks built into the students day.

Our Yr 7 Pastoral Care program is continuing and will be an integral aspect of maintaining connections with the students. The final weeks of Term 1 will focus on:

  • Refining remote learning skills
  • Self-care when working remotely
  • Social connectedness and resilience through Tutor Group activities.

Our Pastoral sessions, have allowed students to provide a small insight into their life at home, sharing some of their favourite things. Tutor Groups have been introduced to their peers loved pets, favourite books, foods, and sporting memorabilia. We will continue in our theme of connectedness this week as students undertake a Photo Challenge whereby the focus will be things that make your life feel meaningful or full of purpose. Students will then present back to their Tutor Group what each photo represents and why is it meaningful to them.

Informal one-on-one sessions have begun whereby Year Advisors and Tutors will check in and assess the individual wellbeing of students. It is hoped that such sessions will connect students more with key adults through this period of time where uncertainty and anxiety may be evident. If you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Pastoral Support

Please remember that all of the usual support services are still available, although they may look a little different.  Tutors, Year Advisors, Counsellors, Dean of Students and the Chaplain are available as pastoral supports. Students can email these supports directly or through wellbeing@redlands.nsw.edu.au and staff will respond accordingly during school hours.

Our Counsellors are also currently developing a Pastoral Support iLearn page with a variety of different resources, which will be available next week. Parents are also welcome to email any of these supports if you are concerned about your son or daughter, or just need some advice abot how to support them.

Parent Zoom Meeting

We are providing this link to this week’s Yr 8 Parent Zoom Meeting due to some technical difficulties with recording the Yr 7 Meeting. The meeting content for both Year Groups is very similar. The meeting starts at timecode 06.37 and ends at timecode 35.00. The timecode can be found at the bottom left hand side of the video.

Chapel

This week was our first remote Chapel. As with other aspects of our school routine, Chapel will continue, albeit in a slightly different format. Each week our Chaplain will record a message for the students that they can access through the Chapel iLearn page. Students will be guided to this by their Tutor and are encouraged to participate in reflection activities after they have watched the video.

Virtual Cross Country

Please click here for details on an optional virtual Cross Country competition for students to compete in this week. Parents and carers are welcome to join in.

Vaccinations

Yr 7 vaccinations will be held now on 12 May if students return to school in Term 2. Parents should not take their children to a GP for these vaccinations if they intend to have them at School.

Head of Junior School

I hope that this message continues to find our community safe and well with increased measures now in place to protect our local and global community. There are some challenges that come with being at home on a more permanent basis, particularly where parents are working, but there may also be opportunities that have arisen out of this challenge. Each year, my family plays more board games over the Christmas holiday period than we do for the rest of the year and despite our best intentions, we never seem to find the time to continue this activity we all enjoy. This enforced quality time together has allowed us to continue this activity on a more regular basis and there has also been more baking than normal as my girls have sought to break up their daily routine at home. I’ve also enjoyed seeing them being more creative in both games that they are playing and also to simply while away the time. They have also found that, at times, it is fine to be bored, often the catylst for a spark of creativity.

Likewise, as my wife and I enjoyed the new-found experience of virtually catching up with friends last weekend via FaceTime, our children did likewise in another room and explored and creatively problem-solved ways in which they could play a range of games via a connection through a screen.

In this second week of remote and online learning, it has been great to see all of the Junior School classes now connecting via the live platform of Zoom enabling students to connect with both their teacher and each other. A number of specialist teachers, our Dean of Teaching and Learning, Mrs Smith, and I have also joined a number of these small group and class sessions and it has been great to see the way in which the children have adapted very quickly to this online learning space. These sessions will increase in frequency moving into next week and our survey at the end of the week will also provide us with additional feedback on how to maximise the best use of this technology looking into next term.

As well as being part of small group or whole class instructional sessions, it was wonderful for me to also be part of a Yr 6 group as we celebrated two students’ birthdays through Zoom, a new experience for Zoe Hicks and Isobel Campbell, but one that I know they enjoyed. It is just these types of new ways of creating lasting memories for special events that have forced us to look at creative ways of doing things which can only be a positive outcome.

I continue to thank the teachers for their reflective practice and openness to refinement and change to meet the needs of their students. We have spent a number of after-hours online meetings sharing practices as we seek to engage our students with their learning and create meaningful online but also offline activities for the students.

I also acknowledge and express my gratitude to all Redlands parents for your continued messages of support and helpful feedback and we appreciate your supportive role with your children now in their home learning environments.

Parent Webinars

Following on from similar sessions in the Secondary School, we look forward to hosting Zoom webinars next week for the Junior Campus which will be at the following dates and times:

Yrs 5 and 6: Monday 6 April at 5.00pm
Yrs 3 and 4: Monday 6 April at 5.30pm
Kindy – Yr 2: Tuesday 7 April at 5.00pm
Preschool: Tuesday 7 April at 5.30pm

Zoom invitations will be sent to families at the end of the week and each family is asked to only log on to one device to allow all families to have access with the fixed numbers permitted on Zoom.

These sessions will allow some of the Junior Campus leaders to connect with parents (something I have missed) and also share aspects of our remote teaching and learning and wellbeing.

Student Wellbeing Matters

The wellbeing of our students remains a priority for us and this week our students have been provided a Daily Wellbeing Grid suggesting a range of activities based on Five Ways To Wellbeing: Being Active, Keeping Connected, Learning Something New, Being Aware and Helping Others.

Students have been encouraged to choose an activity from the grid that they think will support their wellbeing and we hope that by prompting children to choose their preferred wellbeing activity, their sense of efficacy, mental-health agency and resourcefulness will be developed.

Do ask your child about these and some of the activities may need some guidance from parents which could lead to an enjoyable shared experience.

Parents can find a selection of wellbeing resources such as mindful colouring pages, mindfulness meditations and dance and exercise videos in our COVID-19 Parent Resources on Redlands Pulse.

We are very proud of our students’ transition to home learning over the first week. It’s been heartening to see their enthusiasm and capacity to adapt to the online learning environment.

However it is important to continue to maintain a healthy balance of screen time with other activities. Our children’s devices connect them to their learning, their teachers, their friends and extended family so it is understandable that screen time may have markedly increased for some families. Below are some parenting tips for setting some screen-time boundaries at home:

  • Create screen-free spaces and times at home. Help kids to take breaks from technology and model this yourself.
  • Engage your children in other activities such as helping you cook, household chores or playing a game.
  • Encourage your children to choose a screen free wellbeing activity from their grid.
  • Pause and talk. Have quality conversations in your family, focussing on feelings about being away from school, missing friends, or about worries or fears regarding COVID-19
  • Talk with your children to create a ‘screen-time plan’ outlining when and how technology will be used and setting time limits on specific apps, shows and games.
  • Ensure screens are switched off at least one hour before bedtime and not allowed in bedrooms.

An easy parenting strategy to further support positivity at home is to create a ‘Brag Book’ for each of your children. Purchase a special note book and each day write some positive observations, eg. great listening today, helped with packing up, shared a funny joke that made us smile. Finish the day by focusing on these positive affirmations at bedtime, re-read the ‘Brag Book’ and reinforce how much you notice and appreciate these behaviours.

With our April school holidays approaching, we will create some further resources for next week’s final Note Day of the term in our aim to support family wellbeing over the break, which for many will be very different to what you may have had planned.

Our Dean of Students, Ms Kourakis, our School Counsellors and our Chaplain, Ms McKenzie continue to be available if you would like further support.

Performing Arts

After getting our learning platform up and running, this week I spent time with our Performing Arts leaders across Music, Dance and Drama planning online versions of their programs. There will be a separate letter sent to Junior School families with details of this overview which will be fully operational from the start of Term 2.

School Assemblies

Assemblies without the students are clearly not as much fun but I hope that the satirical assembly that we filmed here last week which I uploaded to each class’ Google Classroom page brought a smile and a chuckle to them and I know to many of you. If you have not had a chance to view this, maybe ask your child to show it to you and it might be a fun shared experience together. Just between us, and assuming none of the students read Note Day (!), there will be another video for them (and you) to enjoy on Friday as an end-of-week treat!

Next week, I have organised two assemblies next Monday to gather students by Stages as we approach the end of another busy term.

Monday 6 April at 8.30am: Yrs 3 and 4 Assembly
Monday 6 April at 9.00am: Yrs 5 and 6 Assembly

Staying Connected as Parents

This week, I met with our Junior School Parent Group Coordinators, Jay Cunningham and Rebecca James, who had collated some feedback and questions through the class parent group. The role of our class parent group might look slightly different in the current climate but in some ways, the overarching goal to build connection and relationships within our community will never be as important. I was heartened to hear of stories of support for individual families and we were also mindful that many of our families are here from interstate or overseas and may have loved ones far away. Please don’t hesitate to contact your class parent if you need any support or information or simply someone to chat to; I know that the Redlands Parents and Friends Association and class parents will be only too happy to be there for you.

The Uniform Shop is closed to customers until further notice. Parents may continue to place orders online through Flexischools or via email to uniformorders@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Online Reading Resources

It was lovely to receive details from two of our parents that Audible has launched a new service through which the company will be providing free audiobooks for children and teens for the duration of the coronavirus. These audiobooks are available in six languages: English, Spanish, French, Italian, German and Japanese.

International Day Postponement

We have decided to postpone next week’s scheduled International Day and will look to find an alternative date when the students return to School.

Baby Ryan Coman

We were thrilled to hear of the safe arrival of baby Ryan Coman, a second child for Junior School teacher, Kristie Coman, who is on maternity leave this year. Kristie and Ryan are both happy and well and whilst it may be a while before they visit us, I know that Mrs Coman is looking forward to showing Ryan off to her former students and to colleagues.

They have also found that, at times, it is fine to be bored, often the catalyst for a spark of creativity.

Likewise, as my wife and I enjoyed the new-found experience of virtually catching up with friends last weekend via FaceTime, our children did likewise in another room and explored and creatively problem-solved ways in which they could play a range of games via a connection through a screen.

Remote and Online Learning Update – Zoom

In this second week of remote and online learning, all Prep School classes continue to support students and families in their learning and our next phase of Prep student and teacher engagement will see the introduction next week of Zoom as a live online classroom learning space for the class to connect. A separate letter will be sent explaining how this will work for families and students.

Zoom was introduced in the Junior School this week and we have had conversations between Prep and Junior School teachers on how best to utilise this platform for our youngest students for students to connect with both their teacher and each other.

Next Steps for Prep:

  • Monday – each class teacher will create schedules for their live sessions with their classes and provide a timetable overview for each class on Redlands Pulse and as an announcement to parents and to students in Seesaw.
  • Tuesday – each class teacher will host a live Zoom session to connect with students and start to discuss the guidelines of online video classrooms and let students see one another and help parents and students get acquainted with Zoom.
  • Wednesday – each class teacher will host another live Zoom for connection with the students before the holidays.

The pre-recorded video messages in the morning will continue to be about what they are to complete and instructions on how to do this.

Parent Webinars

Following on from similar sessions in the Secondary School, we look forward to hosting Zoom webinars next week for Prep which will be at the following dates and times:

Kindy – Yr 2: Tuesday 7 April at 5.00pm
Preschool: Tuesday 7 April at 5.30pm

Zoom invitations will be sent to families at the end of the week and each family is asked to only log on to one device to allow all families to have access with the fixed numbers permitted on Zoom.

These sessions will allow some of the Junior Campus leaders to connect with parents (something I have missed) and also share aspects of our remote teaching and learning and wellbeing.

Student Wellbeing Matters

The wellbeing of our students remains a priority for us and this week, our students have been provided a Daily Wellbeing Grid suggesting a range of activities based on Five Ways To Wellbeing: Being Active, Keeping Connected, Learning Something New, Being Aware and Helping Others.

Students have been encouraged to choose an activity from the grid that they think will support their wellbeing and we hope that by prompting children to choose their preferred wellbeing activity, their sense of efficacy, mental health agency and resourcefulness will be developed.

Do ask your child about these and some of the activities may need some guidance from parents which could lead to an enjoyable shared experience.

Parents can find a selection of wellbeing resources such as mindful colouring pages, mindfulness meditations and dance and exercise videos on our COVID-19 Parent Resources information page on Redlands Pulse.

  • Ensure screens are switched off at least one hour before bedtimeand not allowed in bedrooms.

An easy parenting strategy to further support positivity at home is to create a Brag Book for each of your children. Purchase a special note book and each day write some positive observations, eg. great listening today, helped with packing up, shared a funny joke that made us smile. Easter Hat Parade – It’s On!

Look out for communication and information from your child’s class teacher about the traditional Easter Hat parade which will be on the last day of this term, next Wednesday 7 April. Teachers are encouraging students to look to reuse and recycle things in your own home and there is definitely no need to go out to purchase anything! Likewise, we understand that you may not have anything to hand so students could wear any hat or draw an Easter picture. The plan would be for students to share these via Zoom in a live classroom catch up next week and separate information will be sent about this.

Staying Connected as Parents

This week, I met with our Prep School Parent Group Coordinators, Bree Stevens and Lucienne Willis, who had collated some feedback and questions through the class parent group. A Message from Mrs Huon

Thinking of the children at this time and the impact that the media and social isolation will have on them. It is interesting to consider their perspective on this, what do they understand, what will they remember about this time in their lives?

One of the Juniors coughed into her elbow in class one morning at the beginning of term, before turning to her teachers and laughing “Don’t worry, it’s not Coronavirus”. They are listening and absorbing information all the time. Most children’s memories of childhood are dominated strongly by recollections of holidays often due to the social nature of holidays and the time they get to spend with family and friends.

The location, the country, the money spent on holidays is inconsequential to children. They remember holidays because they have their parents and other family members’ complete attention with no one rushing off to work, scrambling to get things done, trying to get children to and from activities while cooking dinner and maintaining the status quo.

I do hope that the Preschool children will also look back on this time and remember quality family time, games around the table, books being read, kicking a ball in the backyard and long walks as a family.

The teachers are missing children, parents, siblings and families. We do hope that children and families still feel connected and are enjoying the resources and activities that are being uploaded onto Storypark for you.

We would again like to thank all of the families for their ongoing support at this time. If you have any suggestions for activities or information please don’t hesitate to let us know. We are loving the feedback and videos of the children; it is also a great way for the children to see their classmates and stay connected. Please contact your class teacher should you have any issues, or need some extra support.

Sports Update

Unfortunately due to COVID-19, it has been confirmed that no competitive Sports fixtures will take place during Term 2. Our sporting associations and governing bodies will continue to review the situation and provide updates when sporting competitions will commence again. It is expected that any return to competition will have to be staged and allow for a grace period for schools and clubs to trial and train students adequately for any season.

A decision will be handed down by Snow Australia on the regional, state and National Interschools Snowsports competition on 21 April. After which we will confirm the details of our Snowsports program for 2020.

We are constantly reviewing the situation and will continue to provide a range of alternative online and digital sports programs to ensure students remain engaged in the Redlands sporting community and learning experiences it provides. I would like to thank the work of our staff and coaches in being resilient and flexible during this time.

Run With It!

School Cross Country races are almost as old as time. From whence schools began we can all remember that idea of getting marshalled at a start with an unknown number of your peers and bolting off at the sound of a gun. If you were anything like me, you would tend to sprint the first 100m on pure adrenalin before realising that you have gravely underestimated the distance of the run.

However, it has been an uphill battle to get large numbers of adolescents to willingly embrace the concept of a maximal effort run, knowing the physical pain and exertion that would be required. Many parents can probably still recall their experience of compulsory running at school, but few do so with unbridled enthusiasm.

It is possible to judge the athletic culture of a school from its annual Cross Country event. Schools tend to experiment with different formats to find the right fit that might suit the school’s culture and eliminate at least some of the accompanying angst. Shorter courses with varying point score systems are all done to sweeten the deal for students. With all major school events, it is a fine line between a higher participated event and a pantomime.

It is ironic that running has become extremely popular in the general community. Park runs, running apps and charity runs have all created a strong culture of recreational running in Australian society. So much so that, along with walking, it has become the most hightly participated physical activity as reported in the Aus Sport data (2019). So, it can’t be that running is obsolete in the 21st century. These activities attract a full range of abilities and ages from young and old and beginner to advanced.

Why is it difficult to build this culture of running? Perhaps it is necessary to look beyond the Cross Country event and examine the place of running within education. We should consider how running is creatively taught, used and a level of appreciation is built around it. Running is one of the most basic primal human movements we can engage in and teaching our students to appreciate this is where the sweet spot lies. In a world of instant gratification and ever increasing complexity, perhaps it is time we embrace the simple and the basic. If this is done, the trepidation of running can give way to a wider level of enthusiasm. The challenge is to promote the concept that running can be for everyone. Within that, racing can be for a few.

As we deliver a 2020 virtual Cross Country Carnival this week, students should be reminded that at this time more than ever, focusing on what we have and what we can do is more important than what we don’t have and what we can’t do. We have two legs, a heart and a set of lungs. Use them and appreciate what your own body can achieve. We are all born to run!

The Carnival is a 5km competition through Strava where students can log a 5km run/jog/walk to receive House points. Students (or parents) can complete the run in between Wednesday 1 April and Sunday 5 April. Click here for instructions on how to take part in the virtual Cross Country Carnival.

Secondary School Sport iLearn

A reminder that students can all access recorded sport specific fitness sessions (done through Zoom) on Ilearn. These are accompanied by hard copies of the fitness sessions if students wish to follow via a paper copy. Our coaching staff have also created a range of videos on necessary skills and drills for sports that students can practice in the comfort of their backyards or at a local park. Students and parents are encouraged to look through this page to see the range of physical activities and sports students can complete at home.

Redlands Sport Podcast

Starting next week we will have a weekly Redlands Sports podcast where we will interview a range of people from within the Redlands School community as well as professional athletes. The podcast will look into what lessons and experiences those individuals have got out of sport in the past, present and future. I will be co-hosting the podcast with a range of Sports staff and our Yr 12 Sports Captains.

Physical Challenge of the Week (by Ms Seebohm)

The first weekly challenge is to spin a ball on your finger for 15 seconds (or as long as you can). Send through your videos to sports@redlands.nsw.edu.au The winner will have their video featured on the iLearn page under the weekly challenges tab.

Mindfulness Activity of the Week (by Mr Gooding)

A square breath is a breath that is even on all sides, and it can be useful as a mindfulness exercise for both students and parents alike. Here’s what to do:

  1. Breathe in to the count of four.
  2. Hold the breath for four seconds.
  3. Breathe out to the count of four.
  4. Wait for four seconds before taking in your next breath.

To keep on track, draw a square in the air with your finger, taking four seconds on each side.

Breathing is the centre point for all human functions. It can calm us, relax our muscles, increase our brain function and reduce stress instantaneously. Its power should not be underestimated.

Swimming

Unfortunately with the current sporting climate, CIS have cancelled all their events until the beginning of June, which means they have cancelled the CIS Swimming Championships. ISA have however released a merit team for the CIS Championships, congratulations to the following swimmers who have been named in this merit team:

  • Olivia Donoghue (Yr 11)
  • Xander Halfen (Yr 8)
  • Chloe Jennings (Yr 8)
  • Erik Scott (Yr 10)
  • Samuel Virtue (Yr 10)
  • Ruby Voyce (Yr 8)

Rugby

This Friday morning Redlands Rugby will host another online fitness session. The session will start at 7.00am with students logging in via Zoom by 6.50am. Click this link or access the Zoom Meeting via iLearn.

Parents and siblings are all encouraged to attend what will be a fast paced and fun session to start the day off on a great note. The session will only need a towel and a water bottle with later sessions bringing in the use of a Rugby ball.

We will also announce the winner of our Figure 8 Challenge which can be found by all students from any sport via iLearn. Click here

Please note if any students need to borrow a Rugby ball for home, we are still handing them out from the Sports Department located in the Fitness Centre.

Staying Fit and Healthy at Home

I hope you are all well and staying as active as possible given the circumstances. It has been great to hear feedback from families who have been trying the routines below and the short videos that have been coming in have been great. In terms of video selection for general fitness, I try to select those videos that are most suitable to our students and families, that are to the point (less talk and product promotion) and those that have clear instructions and presentations.

Over the weekend I tried a few with my family to pass away the time and have added some new ones relating to agility and cones (which can be substituted with any object). We are also working on filming some more game-type drills and I have asked other teachers to contribute with exercise or healthy snack ideas. Stay tuned!

Our Captains’ Blog is up and running, made by our students for our students. There will be more contributions in the coming days so please visit it. One of our Sports Captains, Stella Cunningham, has posted some great core exercises understanding that we may be less active and sitting more than normal in our current lives.

Empowering Students through Online Music Learning

At this time when everyone around the world is interacting through online forums and potentially may be experiencing the challenges of internet speed and connectivity within their own homes, we considered the following cartoon might add some ‘musical’ humour towards the end of our learning and working week.

In continuing to venture through technology supported teaching environments this past week, it is clear that remote educational experiences in Music have progressed into a range of innovative and creative platforms in supporting student learning.

The Music staff having been sharing ideas and strategies on how best to engage our students through virtual classrooms and weekly rehearsals, with the main objective to connect technology and music by providing face-to-face tutorials where students can interact with their teachers and classmates. This learning has been supported by uploaded teaching and learning materials that allow students to work independently by referring to a range of interactive videos, useful online resources and rehearsal audio tracks.

It is true to say that technology has transformed the way we create music and continues to open up a whole new world to musicians. Evidently, latency is our biggest hurdle and the intentional goal, in creating invaluable support materials, has been the focus of the Music Department this past week. All Music teachers and tutors have worked together collaboratively in developing exceptional video tutorials and rehearsal audio tracks for supporting student learning in Curriculum, Extra Subjects and Cocurricular Music programs.

Our biggest technological struggle to overcome in music making, especially in real-time internet jam sessions and rehearsals, is that latency is different for each individual. The time it takes to move data from one place (or musician) to another varies for each individual and is an evident dilemma in the creative space for musicians. When students enter this environment for the first time, it requires a huge adjustment. We have been so encouraged by the students embracing this new learning experience and everyone has shown so much resilience in adapting to this new environment. While real-time online collaboration isn’t a substitute for practising together in person, these online practice sessions, discussions and support materials are certainly benefiting all our musicians. For now, the important element is connection and support as all students work independently on their music in preparation for the time when we all return to a real-world rehearsal.

In further developing our online instruction for the Secondary Music Ensemble program, reinventing our delivery into a virtual rehearsal environment has been one of our focus aspects this week. The various ensembles on iLearn which all students can now access are shown at the top. We will soon be releasing our new Contemporary Music page for the Rock Bands and Sound Engineering programs.
