Issue 10 2019 - 04 Apr 2019

From the Principal

This year’s musical production, Strictly Ballroom – The Musical, saw a stellar performance from our 120 Secondary School students both on stage and behind the scenes at The Concourse, Chatswood at the end of last week. I attended the final performance on Saturday night and very much enjoyed the magnificent music, exuberant dancing and the fine acting which was both dramatic and comedic. I sincerely congratulate all students involved in the production for giving it their very best, both at the performances and in the many rehearsals during this term. Thank you to Producer and co-Director Joy Daley, our Coordinator of Drama and Theatre, to co-Director Alyssha Clarke, one of our Drama teachers, to the many other Theatre and Music teachers and tutors involved in the production including Katharine Boase, Jon Grey, Marita Jansons, Andy Kent, Esther Lamb, Lauren O’Neill, Kristen Privett, Sarah Sparke, and to Friends of Drama for their exceptional efforts with the costuming.

This week saw International Day celebrated on the Senior Campus. Year 7-10 students participated in a variety of internationally themed activities to celebrate our diverse international community, including Chinese painting and kite design, Japanese cooking and fan design, French craft and cooking, Spanish salsa dancing and a cultural activity from Ancient Rome. I thank our Languages Department for planning and organising these special activities for Years 7-10.

Our guest speaker at our Secondary School International Day Assembly was Redlander Maartje Drok, a member of the Class of 2008. Maartje came with her parents to Sydney, where she completed her final year of schooling at Redlands. She then returned to the Netherlands to study International Communications and Media. During that course she did an exchange year in Istanbul University. An internship at RaboDirect in its Sydney office gave her a chance to return to Sydney and work in Digital Marketing. After further travels and work overseas, she has returned to Sydney where she now works as a Salesforce Consultant for AFDigital. She is a truly international young woman.

We look forward to celebrating International Day on the Junior Campus next Wednesday.

Student Safety

We were reminded this week of the importance of safe behaviours, following a couple of reported separate incidents where students in Sydney were approached by a stranger, causing the student to fear for their safety.

It is a timely reminder for families to regularly discuss appropriate, protective behaviours with your child/ren – and what actions they can take to keep themselves safe (in an age-appropriate way).

A good approach is Yell – Run – Tell:

Yell: Make a big noise, to alert anyone around that this is a situation that doesn’t feel safe

Run: Immediately do whatever can be done to extract yourself from that unsafe situation

Tell: As soon as you can, tell a responsible trusted adult what has happened

Teaching protective behaviours or ‘Stranger Danger’ is a delicate balance of raising awareness without causing unnecessary alarm. Of course, while children should be told that the majority of adults are caring, loving and responsible, ‘Stranger Danger’ is an important and small part of teaching them protective behaviours: to be safe, to be aware of predatory strangers, and to be self-protective. They should also adopt the same principles in an online environment.

What to tell your child about a stranger:

  • Tell your child not to listen to or be near a stranger – rather to move away or back inside.
  • Tell your child to never ever go with a stranger – no matter what the stranger says.
  • Tell your child that strangers may make up sad stories, like looking for a lost pet, needing help with a sick child, or needing directions – but you still should not go with them.
  • Tell your child that a stranger should never be believed, no matter what they say.
  • Tell your child that strangers may offer treats, gifts or lollies for ‘helping’ – but you should never take them.
  • Tell your child that you will never send a stranger to collect them. Make a list of the only known people, you would send to pick them up.
  • Tell your child to go immediately back inside and ask someone they know if unsure.

RPFA Second Hand Uniform Sales

Thank you to the RPFA Committee and all the parent volunteers who are involved in organising the second hand uniform sale that is taking place on Sunday 7 April, from 9.00-11.00am on the Junior Campus. Without your support and dedication, this event, which is beneficial to many of our families, would not be possible.

The proceeds from this sale will be contributed to the Redlands Scholarship Fund, an endowment fund for a means-tested Scholarship. Our Principal, Dr Lennox, launched it in 2010 with the vision of providing opportunities for exceptionally talented students who have the potential to make a strong contribution to both Redlands and our society, as well as enhancing the diversity of our student body.

Due to the generosity of the Redlands community, we currently have two means-tested scholarships in the Secondary School.

Celebration of the Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize and Artist in Residence Program

This year we are delighted to announce that Cameron Robbins will conduct our Redlands Konica Minolta Artist in Residence Program taking place at the School from 6 to 17 May. The RKMAP Collection will be displayed during this event.

Spotlight on the Artist

Cameron is a well regarded contemporary artist based in Melbourne. His installations reflect a deep interest in the elements, and the resulting work seeks to make tangible the underlying structures and rhythms of natural forces. Cameron has worked extensively in Australia, most recently at MONA, creating a site responsive artwork that is currently on permanent exhibition. Having worked with many schools, Cameron is very interested in education and children having access to first hand experiences of working with an artist. He will work with Redlands students and staff in creating a site responsive artwork, connecting with the natural conditions and the built landscape, including the current redevelopment on the Senior Campus.

This program would not be possible without a generous support of our partners and sponsors. We would like to thank our main partner, Konica Minolta, for their very generous ongoing support. In addition, we would also like to acknowledge our Gold and Silver sponsors and other supporters for their support.

International Day

The Secondary School proudly celebrated International Day on Tuesday, raising $590 for the UNICEF Change for Good charity. Not only did students dress in their national heritage or House allocated dress, but there were also a number of activities for students to partake in such as Spanish salsa dancing, Chinese kite design and Japanese fan design, to name a few. In addition, all Yr 7 students were treated to the Taiko drumming ensemble and were able to have a go on the Taiko drums themselves.

At our International Day assembly, we were honoured to invite back Redlander Maartje Drok, (Class of 2008) (pictured below with our Coordinator of Languages, John Holden) , who spoke to the students about her experiences as an international student at Redlands and the various experiences she has had studying and working around the world since she graduated from Redlands.

Below is an excerpt from my speech to the students at our assembly, in which I highlighted the importance of International Day at Redlands.

“Today is a special and important day in our school calendar. While we enjoy seeing the rich pageantry of colours, flags and clothing, while we savour the delectable culinary treats and while we appreciate different cultural expressions through dance, music and art, I believe International Day has a far greater significance than these enjoyable events we see on the surface.

You see today, we also and more importantly recognise and celebrate the rich diversity of cultures, backgrounds and nationalities that form the Redlands community. Approximately 20% of us sitting in the gym today come from an international or expat background. Our varied experiences, our different worldviews and our international mindedness enrich each other and strengthen our community.

Our strength is our diversity.

Today I am wearing a tie given to me by the principal of Tupou College in Tonga. Like many of you who have been on exchanges or Service Learning trips overseas, I was very fortunate to spend a month living and working with Tupou staff and students at their school in Tonga. I was accepted into their community and grew and learnt much from this experience. I know many of you have similarly been enriched by diverse human connections made during exchanges or Service Learning trips to Tanzania, Cambodia, China, Japan, Fiji, New Caledonia, New Zealand or other countries.

But, sadly, just over two weeks ago, in the terror attacks in Christchurch, we saw the ugly side of humanity. We saw a horrific act of hatred born out of ignorance and fear. Ignorance of others and fear of difference that led to blind hatred and callous evil.

However, out of my own mixture of shock, grief, anger and frustration in response to the events in Christchurch, an overriding emotion of hope has begun to develop. It is a hope that comes from interacting with you, the community of students and staff at Redlands, a community comprised of a rich tapestry of nations, ethnicities and religions.

Instead of fear and ignorance and hate, I see how we illustrate genuine respect and empathy and love for each other in our daily interactions.

Our strength is our diversity.”

Theatresports

It was great to see so many teams of students from different Year Groups competing in our Theatresports competition on Tuesday evening. I commend all students who had the courage to partake in the improvisational comedy games throughout the evening. I would like to congratulate the Sleepy Senior team who woke up in time to win the Senior Competition, and the Mafia team who took out the Intermediate Competition. (Although there might be a further investigation to ensure no bribery or intimidation of the judges took place.) Also, congratulations to Fraser Clarke (Yr 12) who won the Magic Senior Moment on the night, and Callum Wardman-Browne (Yr 12) who won the Magic Intermediate Moment.

Musical: Strictly Ballroom

I would like to acknowledge all of the parents, staff and students who were involved in the amazing production of the musical, Strictly Ballroom, last Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. From the props, to the costumes, to the set, to the lighting, to the makeup (and hair!), to the music, to the acting, to the singing and, of course, to the dancing, it was a production of the highest calibre.

While I congratulate all of the students who shone on the stage, I would like to make a special mention of the large number of students who were involved in the crew, worked backstage or were in the orchestra pit. It was amazing to see so many students leading these production areas of a school musical and while they might not be “in the bright lights”, their contributions are truly appreciated. I would also like to thank the many staff members and parents who have given so much of their time and effort in making this year’s musical such a success.

Thank you for thoroughly entertaining us – love was certainly in the air as we loved the show!

Service and Social Engagement

Are you Travelling in the Coming School Holidays?

During your travels, we would be grateful if you could collect hotel or airline toiletries as we will be having collection points in the Junior and Secondary School offices for donations in the first few weeks of Term 2. These items will be donated to Every Little Bit Helps who provide toiletries to men and womens’ shelters, people experiencing domestic violence as well as refugee centres.

Battle of the Bands Friday 5 April

This is a fun event on the Redlands calendar showcasing the amazing talent of many Redlands students from both the Junior and Secondary Schools. Again this year, the students travelling to Cambodia will be selling tickets at school during lunch time and also on the night. Adult tickets $10 and student tickets $5. The Cambodia team will also be organising the refreshments before the event and during the interval. Lots of Redlands talent will be on display. No need to organise dinner on this night, as we have it covered.

Easter Donations – Wesley Edward Eagar Lodge

We are seeking Easter Egg donations from Yr 7 students for the community who make use of the Edward Edgar Lodge. This was the first residential facility in Sydney to offer accommodation for both homeless men and women.

Wesley Mission’s motto is to “do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can”. So, we can think of no better way to show the spirit of Easter from our Redlands community this year by sharing in the joy of giving to those struggling with homelessness.

Students in all other years are also encouraged to bring in donations to the Secondary School Office.

Mother’s Day Classic Reminder – 38 days to go

Redlands registrations stand at 67 runners or walkers so far, spread the word and get your friends to sign up with us. On Sunday 13 May, come and run or walk then have a brunch with family to celebrate finishing and contributing to cancer research. Over recent years Team Redlands has slipped on the leaderboard of competing schools so our honour is at stake! This is a wonderful family-oriented event with categories for serious runners through to fun runners of all ages. Proceeds raised from this event are donated to Breast Cancer Research.

Don’t forget to purchase your Redlands pink caps and a pink Team Redlands supporter t-shirt from the Uniform Shop, all profits going to the MDC. All Redlands winter sports teams are also encouraged to incorporate this event as part of their training and team building.

Register your interest in joining the Redlands Team here. You will need to complete the registration process nearly all they way to the payment stage before you can select to join the Redlands team (password = Shine).

Wayside Chapel Visit

On Monday 15 April, during the school holidays, a group of 16 Yr 11 students will be visiting Wayside Chapel in Potts Point to learn about the work they do to provide those in our community who are sleeping rough with a safe space and amenities such as showers and emergency clothing, as well as information and referral services within the inner city.

Junior School Reading and Maths Mentoring

This week saw the final mentor training session for our Secondary student volunteers who will be committing their time after school every Wednesday throughout Terms 2 and 3. In these workshops, students have spent some time developing a deeper appreciation of the role they will perform working one to one with a buddy from the Junior School. This is a considerable responsibility and, without their involvement, these programs would not be able to run.

Uniform Shop

The Uniform Shop will open during the school holidays on Monday 15 April, Friday 26 April and Monday 29 April 8.00am – 4.00pm.

Appointments are essential and can booked online using this link.

Students are reminded that blazers requiring embroidery must be delivered to the Uniform Shop by 3.30pm on Friday 12 April. Students may drop their blazer and certificates to parents waiting in the Liggins Quad and these will be taken to the Uniform Shop ready to be dry cleaned before they are sent for embroidery.

International Day

On Tuesday International Day was held to celebrate the wide cultural diversity at Redlands and our students’ role as global citizens. A big thank you to the Prefects who organised another well-received whole School Assembly. This provided an opportunity to broaden students’ horizons by learning more about their contemporaries’ cultures, while forming a greater understanding of their own place in the wider community. It was also a great pleasure to see many Yr 12s dressing in national costumes, colours and sports kits.

Stress Management From a Mindfulness Approach

On Monday during the Year Meeting, we were delighted to have our guest speaker, Ms Glenda Gow, speaking to Yr 12s on how to manage stress with a perspective of mindfulness. Ms Gow is an experienced body psychotherapist, who has over 20 years experience in the health and lifestyle area as a conference presenter and workshop facilitator. Students are reminded to do a regular check with themselves by asking questions, such as “How present am I?” or “How full is my bucket today?”. This would help to bring their awareness to making good choices for self-care if their bucket is nearly full – stress overload. They were also offered with some small yet practical strategies, including taking “brain breaks”, staying hydrated, maintaining soft knees for connections with being grounded (like a tree), as well as practising deep breaths.

Battle of the Bands

Good luck to all Yr 12s, who will compete at the Battle of the Bands this Friday night at Redlands Hall. It will provide a fun and exciting opportunity for all members of our school to celebrate the achievements of our contemporary musicians and show off their hard work and talent. Please come along and cheer them on.

Musical – Strictly Ballroom

Wow, wow, wow! Ms Wilson and I attended opening night last Thursday evening and were blown away by the glitz and glamour of Strictly Ballroom. With so much hairspray and glitter it was a fantastic spectacle. From those students who helped behind the scenes with make-up and production, to those in the band providing the beautiful music, and to those on stage who showcased their inner Aussie dancer, we were treated to something wonderful. Thank you to all the parents involved for all your efforts behind the scenes helping with costumes, set design and much more.

Congratulations to all the Yr 11 students involved – Aidan Allen, Tasman Banks, Lauren Burke, Matisse Coletran, Lara Dempsey, Cara Eccleston, Greta Feldmann, Sophie Gautheron, Leilani Heath, Flynn Henry, Yuanqui He, Jasmine Hill, Aymon Holth, Madeleine Howard, Poppy Krueger, Aleisha Lawrence, Apsara Lindeman, Isabella Nicoletti, Saskia Northam, Faith Oosthuizen, Tobias Page, Charlie Payne, Noah Pincini, Frank Reid, Miranda Renwick, Inez Smith, Vivienne Spicer, Domenica Stuart, Aysha Swanson, Alannah Walton, Laura Whelan, Thomas Wightwick, Ashlee Wilks, Yuma Yasumura and Danielle Youie

Nepal Trip

Aymon Holth and Laura Whelan, along with ten teenagers from around Australia and the UK, are heading to Nepal in the upcoming school holidays on a youth summit. They will be trekking to 4500 metres in the Himalayas as well as spending a week helping to physically participate in the building expansion of a school in Bardia in Western Nepal. In the school there are currently only four computers and 550 students. We are seeking donations of any working laptops and/or small easily transportable desktops (such as Mac minis). They can be either Apple or Windows PC computers. They need to be operational and cleaned of any data, with the appropriate power source. If you have a spare computer that you are able to donate, please bring it to school and leave with Mr Atkins, Aymon Holth or Laura Whelan. They are also seeking donations of reading glasses. If you would like to read more about the project, click here. Students Achievements

Congratulations to Sebastian Dobson, Stuart Crick and Lachlan Forsyth-Smith for their achievements in the Northern Suburbs Tennis Association (NSTA) Summer Competition. Sebastian was the Division 1 winner, Stuart and Lachlan were the Division 5 runners up.

In Rowing, Alex Holtheuer and Alex Verschoor participated in the Australian Rowing Championships in the A Final, U17 Double and came 5th place. This was an outstanding achievement in very strong field of competition, and the boys rowed a PB time of 7:10.

Redlands Musical Strictly Ballroom

Congratulations to all the students involved in our Redlands Musical Strictly Ballroom. Students are to be commended for their considerable commitment as they worked diligently over a long period to put together this very professional series of performances. We acknowledge our Yr 10 students who played vital roles as actors, production specialists, make-up artists and musicians. Amazing work, very well done. Students were: Felix Abrahams, Piper Allen, Madison Bennett, Carmen Brisson, Olivia Donoghue, Yelena Ganter, Maddison Hunt, Sophia Justice, Theo Mirrlees-Black, Kira Prado, Bethany Richardson, Annabelle Swan and Andrew Verschoor.

International Day

Our Yr 10 students enjoyed the buzz around Campus on Tuesday when Redlands celebrated International Day. Students were engaged in various cultural activities including Chinese Landscape Painting with Mr Yuncken and Ms Wang, Japanese Cooking with Ms Abe and Ms Major, Ancient Roman Cultural Activity with Ms Borthwick and Mr Ockenden as well as French Craft with Ms Barbeau, Mr Scott and Ms Lihou. The highlight of the day was our whole school International Day Assembly where guest speaker Maartje Drok addressed the school. Ms Drok is a Redlander (Class 2008) and Dutch national, who is now working in the IT field in Sydney. She was a compelling speaker and certainly lived the adage of ‘seizing all of life’s opportunities’. Her global experience included a University Exchange at Istanbul University and time spent living in Poland, The Netherlands and Australia.

Pastoral Care

We have spent much time this term encouraging students to put their best foot forward. This began with a focus on goal setting at the beginning of term and has continued with Careers Investigations and encouraging students to develop their global awareness and sense of community through our Tutor programming. It must be acknowledged, that while our Yr 10 students are growing up and seeking to assert their independence, we do still need to remind students of their responsibilities. This has included speaking with our Yr 10 students at our Year Assembly about the importance of always interacting politely and respectfully with teachers and each other. Students are expected to be well presented for class, with all their materials and to be ready to engage at full capacity with their learning. Students are at the point in their learning journey where their relationships with their teachers are very important. As students move into their senior years at school, classes become smaller and the academic demands increase. It must be said too, that we are fortunate to have Tutor teachers in the Yr 10 team who regularly go above and beyond for our students and who remain steadfastly committed to supporting our students’ wellbeing and academic development. Please continue to encourage your child to maintain an open dialogue with their Tutor teachers as these teachers will be pivotal in helping them to navigate the challenges when they arise.

Interesting Article of the Week

Please read

Next week we are off to Camp in Kangaroo Valley with the organisation OEG.

I am aware that some students are feeling a bit nervous about the week but I am confident they will return on Friday with many happy stories to tell, having increased their resilience, independence, teamwork skills and self esteem. I am also confident that they will have developed new friendships that will last throughout and beyond their time at Redlands. Over the years I have sent my own children to Camp, often hearing complaints and tears as I have dropped them off at the school bus. However, they have always returned with a smile on their faces and a sense of achievement that has improved their self esteem.

Camp

Buses will leave the Junior Campus at 7.00am sharp on Monday, so please ensure your child is at the Junior School Oval at 6.30am, as the Camp leaders will need to check everyone is present and make sure everyone is on the correct bus.

Year 8

News
  • International Day was another resounding celebration of the diverse international culture at Redlands. Well done to Phoebe Barnett, Camille Ghenzer and Jacob Reiser for their fantastic national costumes.
  • The 2019 Redlands Musical was fantastic. Congratulations to all Yr 8 performers and crew. Thank you to all who attended and supported this wonderful show.
  • Best of luck to all Yr 8 Battle of the Bands performers. Battle of the Bands will be held in Redlands Hall from 6.00pm on Friday 5 April. All proceeds go towards the 2019 Cambodia Service trip. See the Music section of Note Day for more information.
  • Theatresports: congratulations to Tobias Bowgerald, Phoebe Cunningham, Lucy Horton, Claudia Larsen, Jessica Marshall and Issy Treloar for their comic performances in the annual Theatresports competition on Tuesday night.
  • Thank you to our Yr 8 students (pictured) who assisted in planning our student led Year Assembly last Friday. The assembly focused on risk taking. Well done to all students who actively demonstrated practicing ‘safe risks’ by performing at this assembly. Performers included the intermediate Jazz Band (led by Joe Irvine), Sabrina Blasco (violin) and a drama performance by Tobias Bowgerald, Nicholas Fitzhenry, Joshua Miller and Oliver Noakes.
Yr 8 Camp

Camp information will be distributed in the coming days. There is a short turn around with Camp administration. Carefully familiarise yourself with information and double check that you have met all requirements as there is NO flexibility with deadlines and administrative requirements. You can assist by checking your child’s information on Redlands Pulse is correct and up-to-date, making any necessary changes. Yr 8 Camp is in Week 2 of Term 2 and will be held 5-6 hours north of Sydney. Similar to Yr 7, the Camp is a combination of cabin and tent accommodation throughout the week (two nights of each). More detailed information will be contained in the letter coming home shortly. Thank you for your assistance.

Lost Bags

There are a number of bags going walk-about. This usually means that someone has accidentally picked up the wrong bag; or, the bag has been placed on the ground, has become a trip hazard and has been moved to a safer location. Whilst lost bags are frustrating, there are a number of things students can do to minimise misplacement:

  • Always leave their bag above or in their locker.
  • Avoid leaving their bag in a high traffic area (outside of the toilets/Canteen).
  • If they collect the wrong bag, return the bag to where they found it; or, the Secondary School Office.
  • Do not leave their bag on the floor in hallways/walkways.
  • When removing their bag from the top of lockers and another bag falls, replace both bags.

If a student’s bag goes missing, the best way to locate the bag is:

  • To wait for a few minutes at the end of the school day
  • Go for a walk through the school and look for the bag (after school there will be less people and less bags, making the process of finding the bag easier)
  • To ask some friends to help.

Year 7

A job well done to our incredibly talented Yr 7 students who worked endless hours and shared their many abilities in the musical production of Strictly Ballroom. Congratulations on an incredible run of three solid shows and a standing ovation each night! We had 17 Yr 7 students involved in the musical, including: Daniel Casimaty, Marcus Cooper-Hor, Matilda Crewes, Olivia Everingham, Tara Gold, Lauren Hill,  Hallie Hunt, Scarlett Ilic, Hannah Jones-Way, Sarah McLaren, Sholto-Mirrlees-Black, Zara Naismith, Emma Noes, Mikaela Sanger Larsson, Ashley Stapleton, Anneka Steele and James Stuart.

The showcase of talent continued on Tuesday throughout our International Day as all Yr 7 students enthusiastically drummed along with the Japanese Taiko drumming group TaikOz. All students rotated through an incredible set of drumming beats experiencing the drums themselves and participating in the audience with vocals and hand movements. Later in the day, students continued to learn and share their talents with cooking French, Japanese and Chinese inspired cuisine, creating crafts from various countries and even learning how to Salsa partner dance.

We were delighted to welcome Dr Prue Salter to Redlands this past Tuesday evening to share her Yr 7 Study Skills Presentation. We had a strong turnout from Yr 7 students and parents and we appreciate your time and attention in supporting your children in developing these study skills early on to best prepare them for success this year and throughout Secondary School. We will continue to spotlight various tips from Prue throughout this year during Tutor class.

A message from Prue –

This week Dr Prue Salter from Enhanced Learning Educational Services (www.enhanced-learning.net) ran a study skills evening with Yr 7 parents and students. The evening helped families assess what changes could be made to help students work towards achieving their personal best in an efficient and effective way. Students examined their home study environment, the way they organise and manage their resources, how to work effectively at home and deal with distractions, how to manage the workload in high school, and the steps to studying in high school: making study notes, learning the notes by testing yourself and doing as much practise as possible. Parents are encouraged to review the handout from the session with students and discuss the main areas identified where changes need to be made.  Parents can also find extra study skills tips on the following website: http://studyskillstoptipsparents.com/. All secondary students at our school also have access to a great study skills website to help students develop their skills. Go to www.studyskillshandbook.com.au and enter the username: redlands and the password: 68results and start improving your results today!

The following is extracted from Regulation of Motivation: Evaluating an Underemphasized Aspect of Self-Regulated Learning by C. Wolters. (Educational Psychologist, 2003, 38(4), pp.189-205).

  1. Rewards: Many students set rewards for themselves “I’ll read this section then I can eat this sandwich”. Some students use the opposite, punishments; they create consequences for themselves where they will deprive themselves if they do not do the work.
  2. Self-Praise: Some students find that recognising their progress to themselves and praising themselves for their efforts creates a more positive mental environment and encourages them to keep going. Comments such as “Well done, you’ve solved yet another problem” can help create mental stamina.
  3. Goal-Oriented Self-Talk: Students who think about why they are studying or what possible future outcomes could be from putting in effort can also strengthen the effect of these thoughts by making sub-vocal statements while they are engaged in an academic activity. When faced with an urge to stop working they may focus on the thought of getting better marks, or getting into a particular course at uni or even the satisfaction of learning a new skill or developing self-discipline.
  4. Interest Enhancement: This involves looking for ways to make the task to be completed more interesting or enjoyable. Even making slight modifications to make something less boring or repetitive. One student found that by writing notes in a different style it made the activity more inspiring.
This Week in Tutor
  • Peer Support visited our Tutor groups last Friday for a discussion around planning, being responsible and preparing for assessments.
  • Students revisited the organisation skills shared by Prue Salter starting with a focus on the Student Planner.
  • Students participated in an International Flag Quiz in preparation for International Day and the winners were Ben Barwise, Krishan Price, Christo Shacklock and Jack Stevens.
  • The Credit Point Challenge continues this week and winners will be announced in Week 11.
Announcements and Upcoming Events
  • In preparation for English Term 2, students should read David Almond’s novel, Skellig, during the upcoming holidays so they can benefit from re-reading sections of it in class when teachers begin the formal close study of it next term.
  • To help reduce the weight of backpacks, students are encouraged to go to their lockers after Period 2, 4 and 6. They are encouraged to determine what needs to go home at those times to avoid the mad rush at the end of the day and then resort to taking more items than necessary home with them. Students will most likely be using the electronic version of textbooks at home and keeping their hard copy at school to use in classes.
  • Yr 7 will be participating in a Burn Bright Incursion: Recipe for Success on Monday 8 April 2019.  This will be an all- day event with activities and discussions around motivation, friendships and more. Burn Bright is an amazing program and we are very fortunate they will be working with our students this term.
  • Learning Management Alerts on Fridays. These emails are sent to parents and students to identify any outstanding work that may be completed over the weekend to help students stay on top of their learning. These alerts are issued after a discussion and reminder from the classroom teacher has already been attempted. These are initiated by the classroom teachers yet sent through the Year Advisor. Please contact the issuing teacher for any subjects specific clarification.
  • This term, we are pleased to announce that the Stanton Library’s Nan Manefield Young Writer’s Award is accepting poetry or short story submissions from entrants aged 11-18 years. Prizes total over $2000 and all placed entrants receive an invitation to a writing masterclass; submissions close 5pm Friday 12 April. Also, the Mosman Youth Awards in Literature are accepting short story and poetry submissions from Yrs K-12, with cash prizes totalling more than $2000 to be won; entries close Friday 31 May. These are fantastic opportunities for our students to be recognised and celebrated for their creative writing. For any questions about how to enter, please contact the English Department.
  • Yr 7 Parent Drinks: Book here.

Strictly Ballroom – The Musical

Like many in our Redlands community, my family and I thoroughly enjoyed last week’s Secondary School Musical, Strictly Ballroom, which stirred many emotions and drew a standing ovation at the end.

Whether on stage performing, backstage as part of the production crew, or playing with great poise and collaboration in the Music pit, the experience of being part of a production of this magnitude will leave long-lasting memories for the 120 students from Yrs 7-12 involved, many of whom I remember fondly from their time with us in the Junior School.

I know from speaking to a number of school students I saw there that they have been inspired to audition for future musicals and I extend my congratulations to Mrs Daley and her team of staff, parent and student helpers and supporters on delivering a spectacular show.

Staffing News

We are delighted to welcome Mrs Sarah Ellis next week as our full time Junior School Sports Administrator, whilst Mrs Michael is on maternity leave. Mrs Ellis is a highly experienced Sports Administrator and has recently moved to Sydney having worked at Newcastle Grammar School for the last seven years. Mrs Ellis will be contactable via the juuniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au Sports email address or on 9908 6454. Mrs Ellis and Mrs Michaels will work alongside each other next week as part of the handover process.

Next term, we also welcome Mr Brad Hemopo as Ms Longworth’s PDHPE maternity leave cover teacher. Mr Hemopo has taught in both New Zealand and Australia and has been working as a casual teacher at Redlands over the last few months. Mr Hemopo and Ms Longworth will work alongside each other for the first week of Term 2 as part of the handover process and Ms Longworth will complete reporting information for her students for Term 1.

Please join me in welcoming Mrs Ellis and Mr Hemopo as we simultaneously wish Mrs Michael and Ms Longworth all the very best ahead of the impending arrivals of both of their second child.

We also wish Mr Peter Latimer all the best ahead of his impending wedding to his partner, Shaun. As Class 3L parents are already aware, Mr Latimer is away next week for his wedding and we wish them both a lifetime of happiness and cherished memories and look forward to welcoming Mr Latimer back for the start of Term 2.

International Day – Wednesday 10 April (Week 11)

As mentioned last week, our Junior Campus will celebrate International Day next Wednesday 10 April in the final week of term. This will be a time for our community to join together to celebrate both our rich cultural diversity and international awareness. The event aligns with similar events in Early Childhood and Year Groups will also be incorporating international perspectives in curriculum lessons. Teachers will be contacting parents who may be able to share their knowledge and experiences through a range of activities.

As always, I am sure that the School will be awash with vibrant colour as we celebrate the day with students encouraged to wear national costume or colours from any chosen country on this day with a reminder that enclosed shoes and sun-safe clothes should be worn.

Easter Service

Next Friday 12 April, parents and families are cordially invited to join us in Dunnet Hall for our annual Junior Campus Easter Service. The Service will begin at 9.45am and is always a special opportunity for us to come together as a community to give thanks for the term and to celebrate Easter. The two hour parking zone comes into effect at 9.00am but please allow time for parking as Allister Street may be busy.

Battle of the Bands Rock Group

Tomorrow night, our Junior School rock bands will join counterparts in the Secondary School to take part in the annual Battle of the Bands event with proceeds going towards the School’s Cambodia Service trip later in the year. I have heard them rehearsing and they are sounding fantastic and I know that the crowd will enjoy them kick off the show at 6.00pm tomorrow night! Best of luck to Joshua Colpani, Federico Gazzilli, Aneke Golowenko, Krishna Gupta, Jasper Houchell, Alexandra Jones, Conrad Matic, Hannah Scott, Max Taylor, Juliet Treloar and Callum Zhu.

Kindergarten Open Morning and STEAM Day

The Preparatory School were delighted to host a morning for prospective Kindergarten students and their families last Wednesday. After an information session in the Lucy Hill Library, a very enthusiastic group of Yr 2 and Yr 6 students toured families throughout the Prep School. Our tour guides were the highlight of the morning, proudly showing off their school and authentically sharing insights into Redlands school life with the families. Thank you to Yr 2 students: Azina Guido Bulnes, Caden Lang, Clara Ratcliffe, Jonah Krallis, Sophia Moriarty, Henry Hitchens, Daisy Nassar, Tadhg Lavan, and Yr 6 students: Lachlan Svensson, Angus McInnes, Tabitha Galvin, Alexandra To, Rose Connell, Alicia Green, Thomas Dewar and Alessandro Scali.

This day coincided with the STEAM morning where Kindergarten had opportunities to investigate Squishy Circuits, discuss the workings of their brains, create a magical garden on their iPads and program Ozobots to follow a sequence of coloured lines. Thank you to Shireen Winrow and Argiro Anagnostu, both in the eLearning department, for their skillful leadership of activities throughout the morning and providing students with a memorable and creative experience.

Baby News

Congratulations to Emily Darcy and her husband who welcomed their daughter, Olivia Rose Darcy on 28 March.

Easter Parade and Walk Throughs

On Friday 12 April at 11.30am, Prep classrooms will be open for viewing for parents and caregivers to see some of the wonderful learning that has been taking place already this year. Your children can show you their journals, discuss the displays on classroom walls and guide you through the different learning spaces in the rooms. After this, at approximately 12.00pm, Prep will be holding their annual Easter Hat Parade and parents are very welcome to come and watch the classes. If you wish to participate, we ask that parents create Easter hats with their child at home, prior to this event. The hats can be brought to school on the day and stored in the classroom.

If parents wish to take their child home at the conclusion of the Parade, please inform your class teacher via the Student Planner or Prep Reception in writing. If you are leaving school after the Parade, please collect your child from their classroom and make sure you see the teacher first.

As a reminder to our community, although children giving each other chocolate eggs at school is a lovely idea, we ask that no chocolate eggs or sweets be brought to school. This is to ensure the health and safety of all our students and avoid the sadness associated with missing out or losing a gift. In lieu, hand-made cards would be welcomed.

Junior Campus Easter Service from the Junior Campus Chaplain

“We love because He first loved us” 1 John 4:19

Redlands will be holding the annual Junior Campus Easter Service on Friday 12 April. Parents and family are warmly invited to attend our K-6 Service, beginning at 9.45am. This is a special opportunity for us to come together as a community to give thanks for the term and to celebrate Easter. In the Service, we will reflect as a community on God’s great love for people. One way we can reflect on this love is to find ways within our day to day to share love with others. Thank you so much to those families who have donated eggs to share with people experiencing homelessness in Sydney this Easter. It is not too late to be involved if you wish with the last day for egg donations on Wednesday April 10. On Easter Sunday, the children’s gift bags will be delivered to Edward Eager lodge a homeless hostel in the city.

Our weekly Preparatory Assembly charity funds will go towards purchasing toiletries as a more practical gift for the men and women of the Lodge.

Winter Uniform

As we come towards the end of this term, I would like to remind all Early Childhood families of the Winter uniform expectations for Term 2. Library Books

It is once again time to collect all Library books for the term. It has been a wonderful term of borrowing with many students and parents taking up their Premier’s Reading Challenge by borrowing multiple books to read. Could all Library books be returned to the Library by Monday 8 April, regardless of your specific class Library day. Parents are very welcome to borrow for the holiday period to continue those important daily, reading habits.

Strings Performance

We are delighted to invite parents of Yr 2 students to Dunnet Hall on Monday 8 April for a Strings performance. This concert will provide an opportunity for the students to showcase their learning this term. The performance will commence at 2.30pm and will run for approximately ten minutes. All parents of Yr 2 students are invited to celebrate in their child’s achievement of Curriculum Strings. Please could I remind families that no stilettos are to be worn in Dunnet Hall.

Redlands House/Transition Gold

Music Concert

Last week, Redlands House Seniors and Transition Gold students enjoyed a wonderful performance from Jam on Toast. Jamie from Jam on Toast, performed a non-stop, interactive live musical journey that had the children and staff dancing, singing and laughing. Students already have a connection with Jamie’s music through their weekly Music lessons where his songs are built into the repertoire of music. Jamie clearly loves sharing his love of music with the children, he had the ability to hold their attention and involve them in the enjoyable journey exploring music from around the world. Performances such as this provide our children abundant learning opportunities and assist in developing a sense of community.

Weekly Results

Football

Please refer to Redlands Pulse – Football for the most up to date Football information for the season. The 2019 Football Handbook contains information regarding selection policy, key dates, wet weather procedures, and the 2019 training schedule.

On Saturday 30 March our Boys A Football teams travelled to Redfield to participate in their Gala Day. A great start to the day saw the 13A Boys finish with a convincing win. The 14A Boys had a much closer game, but played well and managed to end the game with a 2-1 win. The Redfield 15As were a very strong side, our boys competed hard but Redfield had the edge at the final whistle. Redlands 16As played a fantastic game and came away with a very strong win, and the 1sts Boys fought hard, but unfortunately Redfield were too strong on the day. It was a great day for Boys Football and our teams showed some promising signs for the upcoming season.

The Chevalier Gala Day will not be going ahead for Football this year, however, please see the training schedule for this Saturday 6 April below. All sessions will be held at the Redlands Junior School Oval.

8.00 – 9.00am: Junior A/Inter A Girls Training
9.00 – 10.00am: 1sts/2nds Girls Training
10.00 – 11.00am: 16A Boys Training
11.00am – 12.00pm: 1sts Boys Training

Please continue to make Redlands Pulse your first point of contact for all things Football for the 2019 Winter Season.

Indoor Hockey

Our Indoor Hockey team had a great 6-5 win over Queenwood. This has shot the girls into the Grand Final this week against Ascham. The girls have had a great season so far and we wish them all the best in their Grand Final on Friday at Marie Bashir Gym.

Netball

NSNA Netball begins this weekend Saturday 5 April. Parents and players are asked to check Redlands Pulse for their game times and a gentle reminder that parking at Willoughby can be difficult at the best of times, so please allow for extra travel time.

Additional skill development training will run for Yrs 7-12 on Wednesday mornings in Lang Gym from 7.00 – 8.00am, this is a great session and is open for all players.

All players are reminded to come to all training prepared with correct uniform, Netball appropriate shoes and also water bottles to each training.

The training schedule can be found on Redlands Pulse – Netball. This will remain in place for the 2019 Winter Sport season. A reminder that both trainings are compulsory for all players and take precedent over any extra curricular activities. For those sessions off site on Tuesday, training will finish at 5.00pm and return to school by 5.30pm. Those off site on Thursday training will finish at 4.00pm and return to school by 4.30pm. If you would like your daughter to have permission to leave from an offsite training venue (Willoughby or Crow’s Nest Rooftop), please email Mr Cameron Ellis.

Musical

Congratulations to all the students who were part of the brilliant success of this year’s dazzling Musical Strictly Ballroom the Musical. Over 130 members of the Redlands student community from Yrs 7 to 12 were involved performing to three amazing performances. Whether the students were on stage, under the stage, side of stage or working with puppets, they gave their very best, learning many new skills and making many strong friendships across Year Groups. These wonderful experiences could not have taken place without the support and assistance of so many people which enabled our Redlands stars to let their light shine.

Mrs Daley and the Musical staff team would like to thank the parents, especially our departing Yr 12 parents for all their support over many years. We would also like to acknowledge the co-Chairs of Friends of Drama, Tracy Everingham, Melissa Fleming and Elena Burchett who contributed in so many ways through this project with the Friends of Drama parent team of volunteers.
