From The Principal

Welcome to our new Online Note Day.

It has been developed following extensive design development and user consultation, including valuable feedback from parents to improve our communications between school and home.

Features of this new format include:

  • Easy access and reading of Note Day on a range of devices, including mobile phones
  • The ability for parents to customise Note Day to show the sections most relevant to their children’s section of the School

Online Note Day will be published in the same location each week if parents would like to bookmark this on their phone or web browser.

We will be surveying parents next term to ensure that Online Note Day continues to provide relevant information in an easily accessible, mobile-friendly format.

We hope you enjoy Online Note Day!

This week the ABC Radio website featured a wonderful article on piano tutor Frida Kotlyar, who inspired generations of Redlands students for 29 years. You can read more about Frida’s history here

I am very much looking forward to attending the opening night of our Secondary School Musical Return to the Forbidden Planet this evening. Following the advice of our Drama department, I will be fastening my seat belt, setting my ray gun to stun and getting ready for a cosmic adventure of meteoric proportions!  Featuring over 100 students on stage and behind the scenes, the Musical is on at The Concourse, Chatswood for the next three nights and the few tickets still available can be booked here.

Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize

Many pieces from this year’s exhibition have already been purchased by various art collectors as the show includes many well known artists. You can learn more about the winners and the Prize’s history on our website. Redlands students, particularly those studying Visual Arts as an elective, will be taken to the exhibition with their teachers.

Please join us for the private viewing of the 22nd Redlands Art Prize at the Parents’ Art Appreciation & Cocktails on Thursday 10 May at 6.30pm at NAS, Darlinghurst. This is a great opportunity to meet other Redlands parents and staff and learn about the collection. Tickets are available HERE

For the last year’s photo collection from the event, please visit here.

Why Annual Giving Matters?

Your generosity enables the School to accelerate the development of improved facilities that will contribute to enhancing the learning environment for current and future students. We are fortunate at Redlands to have a community with a strong tradition of generously giving back to the School. It is through the contributions of previous families that current students are able to enjoy today’s facilities and resources such as the Peter Cornish Building, 2002 (Junior Campus) and the Roseby Science Building/Liggins Atrium, 2007 (Senior Campus).

What Difference Can You Make?

Donations of any size, small or large, are highly appreciated as tuition fees cover the running costs of the School only. Capital works are financed by bank loans, reserves and donations. Donations to the Building Fund are tax deductible and will be dedicated to the final stage of the development of New Learning Hub, which is due to open in mid-2019. We are still seeking donations for final fitouts as well as some specific equipment for Design & Technology and Visual Arts, including 3D printers and laser cutters which will be located at the ground level of the New Learning Hub. If you wish to contribute to the final stage of the development and make a tax deductible donation to the Building Fund, please visit here or you can make your donation with your fee statement.

Winter Uniform

Students are reminded that Winter uniform including blazers will be required from the start of Term 2. We are open every weekday except Tuesdays from 8am-4pm and Thursdays until 6pm, so why not beat the rush and come and visit us soon!

Blazers

Blazers requiring embroidery will need to be at the Uniform Shop before 3.30pm on Friday 13 April. As usual, we will have parents collecting blazers outside the Hall following the final assembly on the last day of Term. Cocurricular Assembly

Last Thursday 5 April, we had our Term 1 Cocurricular Assembly where we gathered as a Secondary School to celebrate various cocurricular achievements in Term 1, as well as look forward to upcoming events. Our Sports Captains, Jemma and Zachary, gave a review of the Summer Sports season and we acknowledged various individual award winners, as well as a number of ISA Champion teams. We were also able to present some of our 1sts Winter Sports teams before they commence their upcoming seasons. Our Arts Captains, Charlotte and Marvin, shared their excitement for the upcoming Musical, Return to the Forbidden Planet, which opens tonight, as well as the Battle of the Bands next Monday evening, before Poppi and Alisha entertained the audience with a wonderful rendition of Fields of Gold. Our Dance Captain, Samantha Menzel, shared a video of our dancers in some of their recent rehearsals and our Service Captains, Hugh and Nono, spoke about some of the recent Service learning initiatives at school.

We were also very privileged to have Redlander and Winter Olympic Games silver medalist, Jarryd Hughes, return to the School as our guest speaker for the assembly. In a question and answer session with our Captain of Snowboarding, Tim Goerner, Jarryd reflected on his time at Redlands and the journey he has taken, including some of the adversities he has had to overcome, which has recently culminated in a silver medal at the Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang.

Our many and varied cocurricular activities give students an opportunity to discover and pursue their various passions and truly let their lights shine in so many different ways and it was wonderful to bring the whole school together to acknowledge and celebrate these various pursuits.

International Day

Next Tuesday 10 April, we will be celebrating International Day in the Secondary School. This day is an opportunity to celebrate the many different heritages and rich diversity which make Redlands such a special school. There will be a special assembly on Tuesday and a number of events and activities throughout the day including an Aboriginal incursion, French and Japanese cooking, Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Chinese painting, Japanese fan design, Spanish salsa dancing and much more. Students in Yrs 7-9 are also completing activities in Tutor groups over the next two weeks on the United Nations’ Declaration of Human Rights. There will be an international themed mufti day with each House representing different nations and colours: Dumolo – Japan (red and white); McDouall – Spain and Ancient Rome (red and yellow); Roseby – China (Red); and Cowper – France (Red, White and Blue). There will be a gold coin donation for the mufti day and all money raised will go to UNICEF’s “Change for Good” campaign, delivering life-saving health care, clean water and education to children wherever the need is greatest in more than 190 countries world-wide.

Musical Return to the Forbidden Planet

Well over 100 students and staff have been excitedly preparing this week for our Secondary School Musical, Return to the Forbidden Planet, which opens tonight and continues Friday and Saturday evenings at The Concourse in Chatswood. The performing and creative arts continues to flourish at Redlands and I wish everyone involved in the Musical all the best over the coming days. There are still a few tickets available and they can be booked here.

Battle of the Bands

Our budding rock stars have made it through auditions and are ready to blow the roof off Redlands Hall in our annual Battle of the Bands on Monday evening. Students from Yrs 5-12 will be performing and I can’t wait to see and hear our talented contemporary musicians on the stage.

Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony

Congratulations to Yr 10 student, Ruel Van Dijk, for his amazing performance of Golden Years to conclude the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony last night. The rest of the world got to see a glimpse of the amazing talent we have been so fortunate to appreciate at Redlands.

Parent Volunteers Needed

We need new members to add to our friendly team of volunteers who assist Redlands students in Yrs 7-12 with exams and assessments throughout the year. We welcome Prep, Junior and Secondary School parents, grandparents, friends and Redlanders. Our volunteers respect confidentiality, are reliable and punctual, patient and relaxed. Legible handwriting is a bonus. If this describes you too, come and join our team! You can choose the exams and assessments for the subjects and years in which you are interested to suit your schedule. No subject specific knowledge is required, you are simply there to read and/or write what the student dictates, and to regulate the time. Bad spelling? No problem – spelling is ignored when there’s a writer. Illegible handwriting? You could be a reader (no writing required) or supervise time for a student or a small group. With your help a student can achieve his or her potential, you will see the kind of exams set across a range of subjects at the various stages of Secondary School, and you will gain another perspective of Redlands. Our students are very appreciative of the support they are given. Our next information session will be held on Monday 9 April. If you would be interested in finding out more about helping with exams, please contact Saralie Pincini or on 9968 9854.

Study Skills: Dr Prue Salter

Should you listen to music when studying? In an ideal world we would probably say no to music while doing schoolwork except classical baroque/instrumental music which actually can help your memory by getting the brain into a relaxed state. But a good compromise is as follows: If the work is not very difficult, and fairly routine, then you can have whatever music you like on. It will make you feel relaxed, it will make you feel like the time is going faster and help you stick to completing the work you need to do. But if the work requires higher order thinking skills, ie. studying for a test, trying to understand something difficult, doing an essay plan, trying to learn or remember anything – then switch the music off. Otherwise it will end up taking you much longer to complete the task and to retain what you are learning (even though you are convinced it is not affecting you!). Just get in the habit of stopping and asking yourself each time before you start work whether it is the type of work that requires you to really focus and concentrate and if it is – switch the music off for a while. The same approach goes for doing work in front of the TV. You might also like to visit the Dealing with Distractions unit for some more ideas and in particular blocking software for technology distractions.

Training for Assessments

One of our Yr 12 mothers has generously offered her expertise after completing a Bachelor of Health Science in Nutritional Medicine. Unfortunately she has been forced to remain anonymous in order to maintain her son’s street cred, but we are very grateful to her for providing the latest research-based approaches to staying centred, healthy and focussed as we prepare and train for the Half Yearly Examinations in just over a month.

  • GREEN THERAPY – mood elevator, de-stressor
Since the body is ready for action under stress (fight or flight response), exercise can have a positive effect on hormones, reduce stress and improve stamina, all vital while studying.
  • MEDITATE – de-stressor, calming
Clinical studies show significant improvement on perceived stress and improves mood so check out free guided mediation app Headspace – categorised for better sleep, feeling less stressed, finding calm, being more focused and managing anxiety. Find the one that best suits you.
  • AVOID STIMULANTS – calming
Caffeine found in coffee and Red Bull makes stressful times worse as it overworks our already busy nervous system, so replace with water, milk, herbal teas, cacao or dark chocolate. Give a turmeric or a chia latte a go – not only nutritious but delicious.
  • TAKE A BREAK – recharge
A break from studying whether it is 5 minutes, 20 minutes or an hour will help you re-focus. Try stretching, take 5 big deep breaths, go outside, eat nutritious food, drink a big glass of water.
  • 5 BIG DEEP BREATHS – calming, recharge
Very easy to do and instantly calming when feeling overwhelmed. Try doing this every time you have a break from sitting down. Get up, have a big stretch and then take 5 big breaths in from your nose and out from your mouth.
  • SLEEP – restore and recharge
8 hours of sleep is considered “normal” so try and get adequate sleep. You will feel better and have improved cognition to deal with the next day.
  • ASK FOR HELP – another perspective
Talk to an adult you know can help or guide you. Mum or Dad, an older sibling, your favourite teacher. Talking to someone will give you another perspective and make a stressful situation less stressful.
  • ENJOY A BATH – to relax
Add magnesium rich Epsom bath salts into the bath water to relax sore muscles.

Nutrition for Examination Preparation

With exams around the corner stress levels may be elevated so nourishing the body with food, rich in specific nutrients utilised during periods of stress is another way to be prepared. A well-balanced diet is a great way to start so try including food from the groups listed below on a daily basis.

VITAMIN Crequirements increase when our body is under stress.
Foods high in Vitamin C include:

  • Broccoli, tomato, capsicum
  • Oranges, strawberries, watermelon, Kiwi fruit
  • If eating fruit at school is too messy, eat when you get home or with your breakfast.
  • Increase tomato intake by choosing tomato-based pastas.

B VITAMINS – assist the body in utilising fuel from food and demand increases when our body is under stress.
Foods high in B vitamins include:

  • Wholegrains which include wholemeal or multi grain bread, wholemeal pasta, brown rice, wholegrain crackers, oats
  • Weetbix, oats, Sultana Bran or Mini Wheats are a better breakfast choice. Chop up a banana or add some berries for added nutrition.
  • Try brown rice sushi instead of white rice sushi.
  • Swap white crackers to whole wheat crackers.

PROTEIN consumed from food is broken down into amino acids. Specific amino acids are the starting block for chemical messengers that regulate sleep, stress, appetite and metabolic rate.
Foods high in protein include:

  • Lean beef, lamb, pork, chicken, turkey, tuna, salmon
  • Eggs
  • Milk, yoghurt, cheese
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Tofu
  • Edamame beans
  • Lentils, chickpeas, pinto beans, kidney beans
  • A good quality protein powder is ok during periods of stress as it is easily digested. Only once a day added to a smoothie. Great as a quick breakfast or snack during the day.
  • Try dips made out of legumes e.g. humus with wholegrain crackers or vegetables.
  • Include edamame beans and tofu when eating Japanese food.
  • Bare Blends have a great range of protein powders.

MAGNESIUM is necessary for energy production.
Foods high in magnesium include:

  • Almonds, legumes, wholegrains, darky leafy vegetables (spinach, rocket, kale), seafood, dark chocolate (85%)
  • Dark chocolate coated almonds are great way to increase magnesium.
  • Try Kale chips instead of potato chips.
  • Enjoy a green leafy salad with every dinner.

Approaches to Learning

During Tutor Time this week, students were given time to complete their own rating for Approaches to Learning Term 1 for each subject in three separate criteria: Behaviour, Diligence and Engagement. This is not dependent on academic results, but more focuses on individual student’s attitude and work ethics. Just as echoed in the famous quote, “Continuous effort – not strength or intelligence – is the key to unlocking our potential”.

Battle of the Bands

On Monday 9 April some of our talented Yr 11 musicians will be performing in the Battle of the Bands at 6pm in Redlands Hall. Please come along for a fantastic night of entertainment and also support our Yr 11 Cambodian Service trip fundraising.

Approaches to Learning

Approaches to Learning gives an indication of student Diligence, Engagement and Behaviour based on teacher observations and student reflections. Using a set criteria, Approaches to Learning is completed at the end of each term. For parents, data is included in the Semester 1 and 2 Report. Students also meet with their Tutor at the start of each new term to discuss results using data to help shape goals. On Tuesday this week, Yr 7 met to discuss the process and started entering their reflections. Students must complete their Approaches to Learning by Friday 6 April. To complete their Approaches to Learning:

Junior School Staffing News

Looking forward to Term 2, I share some staffing news for the Junior School community, parts of which have already been shared with parents of classes concerned.

We are delighted to have appointed Mrs Stacey Clarkson as Mrs Mieke Johnson’s maternity leave replacement. A Bachelor of Education graduate from Massey University in New Zealand, Mrs Clarkson taught in primary schools in New Zealand for a number of years before moving to the UK, where she taught from 2010 to 2017 at Donhead Preparatory School, a K-6 Independent School in London. At Donhead, Mrs Clarkson taught in both Yrs 5 and 6 and also held the leadership position of Assistant Head Teacher for her last five years there. She has recently relocated to Sydney with her husband and young daughter and is very excited to continue her teaching career at Redlands.

With Mrs Catriona Ling taking Long Service Leave in Term 2, we welcome Mrs Fiona Rugg to take on her Numeracy Enrichment teaching role. Fiona is an experienced teacher with particular expertise in Gifted Education and also has a passion for STEAM education. Mrs Rugg spent time teaching alongside Mrs Ling this morning and will do so again next week as part of her handover process and getting to know the students in her classes.

Mr Bill Baugh is also taking Long Service Leave in Term 2 and we welcome back the familiar face of former Junior School teacher, Emily Darcy, to take up this part time role for Term 2. Emily is already working one day a week in the Prep School as their Numeracy Enrichment teacher and spent time with Mr Baugh and his students as part of their handover.

Our e-Learning Coordinator, Ms Jeanine Kobylinski tendered her resignation as she takes up a permanent position at another school. We are currently reviewing how we can support the needs of this role in this interim period ahead of Mrs Winrow’s planned return from maternity leave later this year to this role.

I also draw your attention to share that Ms Helen Louridas, our Ballet and Dance Administrator, leaves Redlands at the end of this term. Mrs. Louridas will be a familiar face to many on this Campus and we wish her well in her future endeavours.

The Significance of Sleep in Learning

There are many contributing factors in enabling our students to be at their receptive best as learners, a number of which we have a direct ability to affect. One that falls slightly out of our remit (apart from perhaps being on camp!) is the relationship of sleep to productive learning. This has been widely researched and there is recognition that the quantity and quality of sleep can have a profound impact on learning and memory. As you would imagine, a student who comes to school tired generally cannot focus as attentively in class or be in a position to actively engage in learning or receive information. Consequently, learning can become an inefficient process for them. This is certainly something we see from time to time in our classes and hence, I hope that you find some of the information below valuable, just as I did for my own children and myself.

I read an article which highlighted the role of sleep on our overall health and wellbeing and also analysed a study from the National Sleep Foundation in the United States, which has slightly revised the amount of sleep everyone needs.

The research now has a minimum and maximum range, and a recommended section for optimal health which can be used as a good rule of thumb. One of the new things introduced is the “may be appropriate” range, which acknowledges that individuals do vary in their sleep needs. Another big change they made was to recommend more hours of sleep for babies, children and teenagers, with recommendations as below:

Category Age Range New Recommended Hours/Day Previous Recommended Hours/Day
Newborns 0-3 months Sleep range narrowed to 14-17 hours previously it was 12-18
Infants 4-11 months Sleep range widened to 12-15 hours previously it was 14-15
Toddlers 1-2 yrs Sleep range widened to 11-14 hours previously it was 12-14
Preschoolers 3-5 yrs Sleep range widened to 10-13 hours previously it was 11-13
School age children 6-13 yrs Sleep range widened to 9-11 hours previously it was 10-11
Teenagers 14-17 yrs Sleep range widened to 8-10 hours previously it was 8.5-9.5
Young adults 18-25 yrs Sleep range is 7-9 hours new age category
Adults 26-64 yrs Sleep range did not change; remains 7-9 hours remains 7-9 hours
Older adults 65+ yrs Sleep range is 7-8 hours new age category

While their sleep table above is a good overview, the research also talks about the importance of lifestyle factors which may be impacting your sleep. Some of the factors they suggest would support a good night’s sleep include:

  1. Having some sort of routine before you go to bed every night so your body understands that the series of activities leads to sleep
  2. Avoiding screen time which acts as a stimulant before bed
  3. Not to have mobile phones and/or computers in your bedroom
  4. Avoiding food for two hours before bed time
  5. Making sure your bedroom is dark enough, comfortable and the right temperature

I hope this summary provides some thought for you and your family and if it helps you get your child to bed at an appropriate time and away from a screen, please do use my name and reference this article!

Redlands International Day – Wednesday 11 April

As per the Junior School calendar, our Junior Campus will celebrate International Day on Wednesday 11 April in the final week of term. This will be a time for the community to join together to celebrate both our rich, cultural diversity and international awareness. The event aligns with similar events in Early Childhood but will run a day after the Secondary School event of a similar theme.

Year Groups will also be incorporating international perspectives in curriculum lessons and teachers will also be contacting parents who may be able to share their knowledge and experiences through a range of activities.

As always, I am sure that the school will be awash with vibrant colour as we celebrate the day with students encouraged to wear national costume or colours from any chosen country on this day.

Mother’s Day Classic 2018

There are 38 day to go until the Mother’s Day Classic on Sunday 13 May.  Team Redlands currently stands at 30 registrations so we have a long way to go to match last year’s team of 111 runners and walkers. This is a wonderful family oriented event with categories for serious runners through to fun runners of all ages. Proceeds raised from this event are donated to Breast Cancer Research. Redlands pink caps and a new pink Team Redlands tshirt will be available from the Uniform Shop by the end of April.

Register your interest in joining the Redlands Team You will need to complete the registration process nearly all they way to payment before you can select to join the Redlands team.

Tuesday Clubs

Please be reminded that there are no Tuesday clubs in the first and final weeks of any term, the cocurricular clubs run by class teachers. Hence, the clubs will resume in Week 2 of Term 2, that date being Tuesday 8 May.

Our next information session will be held during the last week of term. If you would be interested in finding out more about helping with exams, please contact Saralie Pincini or on 9968 9854.

Magic Sight Words Program

Sight word recognition fosters self-confidence and fluency in reading. This confidence will help your child to persevere through the challenges of reading, as well as fuel their desire to continue reading. This year, Prep students have commenced the Magic Sight Words Program as part of their Home Learning. Information about the program was sent home with students at the beginning of the year and can be found in the front pages of their Sight Word book.  Magic Words are the 300 most common words in English and are the most important words when learning to read. The primary focus of the Magic Sight Word Program is to support recognition and practice of high frequency words in a variety of contexts. It is a differentiated program, catering to individual needs and one where students progress at their own pace. It is possible for many children in one class to be on several, different levels. Additionally, sight words are explicitly taught as part of literacy and once a week, each student will read list words with their teacher. When the teacher is comfortable with their proficiency, students will be given the next list of words to acquire. There is no rush for your child to complete the Magic Sight Word Program.  Proceeding from one list to another is not a competition, nor is it expected to be a demanding experience. All students will progress from one list to another at different rates and it is important to recognise this. In fact, it is more beneficial to take the time to review words, not only reading, but also writing and playing games with them too. More of these activities can be found in the children’s Sight Word books. The goal is for recognition of sight words in different contexts, such as in home-reading books, in environmental print or in library books. It has been delightful to see the children embrace this Program as they enthusiastically read their new-found knowledge of words with their teacher. Staff have been overjoyed with the children’s eagerness to read their lists and some even asking their teacher daily if they can practice together!  As parents, your participation in the Program is significant and I would like to thank you for helping to make this an enjoyable and collaborative learning journey for the children.

Easter Service and Hat Parade

It was a beautiful, sunny day last Thursday when the Preschool and Prep enjoyed their Easter Hat Parade which followed the Junior Campus Easter Service. At our Service this year we focused on the one word that encapsulates the Easter message – #love. As a community we contemplated the love that God demonstrates for all people and the celebration of all that Jesus did for humanity when the first Easter was considered. We were led through music and readings and encouraged to bring actions of love and gratitude into our own thinking.

The Prep students and families led the way with demonstrating the Easter message of love by their generous support of Wesley Missions Edward Eagar Lodge, a Crisis Accommodation service for people experiencing homelessness. Ms McKenzie delivered the gifts on Easter Sunday and reported that all of the people who received the gifts were touched and humbled by the sweetness and kindness of the gifts, and most especially the thoughtful cards. A special thank you to Ms McKenzie, the students, families and staff who helped us to remember this important time for our school community. We hope the message of love will continue to encourage us as the year progresses.

Easter Hat Parade

On Thursday 29 March Redlands House joined the Preparatory School to take part in the Easter Hat Parade. Wearing our colourful hats, the Senior and Transition class students marched their way around the oval to some Easter music. Ballet and Dance

End of Year Redlands Ballet Concert

We are very excited to announce that this year’s Ballet presented by Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy is The Nutcracker!

A classical ballet in two acts, originally choreographed by Lev Ivanov, libretto by Marius Petipa, after E.T.A. Hoffman and music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the ballet premiered in 1892 in St Petersburg. This fairy tale ballet was first seen in the west in London during 1934, although did not begin to achieve its great popularity until the mid 1950s. Thanks to a supremely melodic score, together with a celebration of childhood imagination, the magical world of The Nutcracker remains a ballet chosen as a first one for children.

Secondary Sport

From the Head of Secondary School Sport

2018 Commonwealth Games

This week represents the start of the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The Commonwealth Games represent an opportunity to reflect on the power of sport within society. The Games are underpinned by the unique relationships which bring together a third of the world’s population through the transformative and connecting power of sport.

The games are a reflection of the Commonwealth itself – a voluntary association of 71 nations and territories – and its commitment to human rights, democracy and the rule of law. The interesting note about the Commonwealth Games is the simultaneous commitment to diversity and equality within the competition.  Some of the world’s largest and smallest countries, from India, with over 1.2 billion people to Nauru with a population of 10,000 are represented. It also one of the only competitions in the world where para-athletes are fully integrated within the competition. The 2018 Games are also significant being the first time that both male and female athletes have parity on the level of medals and competitions available to both genders with 133 Women’s events, 133 Men’s events and 9 Mixed/Open events. It also has 50% of technical official roles being held by women and 50% by men.

These sorts of events in history provide a very poignant reminder of sport being more than just winning or losing. Sport becomes a vehicle for human and social development. A much higher goal than just a results sheet or scoreboard. I encourage our students to take time to watch some of the Games and see the power and purpose of sport not just from an individual’s perspective, but the perspective as a global citizen.

Commonwealth Games Vision

Building peaceful, sustainable and prosperous communities globally, by inspiring Commonwealth Athletes to drive the impact and ambition of all Commonwealth Citizens through sport.

Cross Country

Information regarding the upcoming Cross Country season will be available on Redlands Pulse next week.

Diving

Best of luck to Toby Griffiths (Yr 9) who will be competing at the NSWCIS Diving Championships on Thursday 5 April.

Football

On Tuesday 27 March, the Redlands Football Boys sent a squad of 16 to the Shore playing fields for their first trial game of the pre-season. The first half was played with a lot of determination, keeping a high and intense press on the Shore midfield and back line. Despite the extreme hot weather, the boys persisted in pushing forward but in doing so, ultimately opened up the field in our defensive half. Shore were strongest in their offense, which didn’t match our weakness in defence, which ultimately after much patience from Shore, resulted in us conceding a goal. This however worked well in our favour – our morale rose as we wished to pursue the negative goal deficit. This was a good sign to see as, despite knowing the strength of our opposition, we were able to keep up the pressure and not lose sight of the game. It was a good first effort from the boys and with more games coming up before term ends, it will be good to see the squad develop, bond and yield positive results.

Indoor Hockey

Unfortunately, our Junior B and Senior B teams lost their Semi Finals last week. Both teams played really strong games against Ascham, and showed great improvement throughout the season.

Netball

The NSNA Netball season begins this weekend. Fixtures are available on Redlands Pulse under the Redlands Rhino tab.

Redlands Friends of Netball will be having their first meeting on Tuesday 8 May at 6.00pm (room L1.3). If you are interested in being part of the Friends of Netball please email Karen Kerr

On Tuesday afternoon our Inter A and 1st VII Netball teams took on Loreto Kirribilli in some trial matches. The Inter A team were up against some strong opposition and, given this was their first match together, held together really well. It was a great first match for the Inter As with a lot of potential for the season ahead. The 1st VII girls had a very tightly contested match. Redlands went into the first break two goals behind and the next two quarters seemingly went goal for goal, with great passages of play from both teams. This match was going down to the wire with scores tied at 28. Unfortunately Loreto took the match 31-29. The 1st VII will now face The Armidale School on Friday 13 April at 3.45pm in Dunnet Hall.

Swimming

Good luck to Jodie Ah Chong, Jasmine Chubb, Jemma Donoghue, Olivia Donoghue, Laura Holtheuer, Sophie McGrath, Ella Palmet, Sean Russell and Samuel Virtue who will be competing at the NSWCIS Swimming Championships on Wednesday 4 April and Thursday 5 April.
