From the Principal

One of the hallmarks of a Redlands education is the wide range of opportunities offered to develop well-rounded students and this past week has seen some wonderful achievements by our students in a number of academic and cocurricular areas.

Last Thursday afternoon I very much enjoyed the Junior Music Festival, Music through the Decades, and was struck yet again by the delight, enthusiasm and burgeoning musical skills of our students who performed with confidence and evident joy on the Dunnet Hall stage, as the cover of this week’s Note Day illustrates.

On the Service front, last Friday we supported Jeans for Genes right across the School, with valuable funds raised for the Children’s Medical Research Institute. Friday night saw seven of our eight Debating teams win their debates against Monte in the SDN competition and I congratulate the teams on their achievements.

Over the weekend six of our Dance groups competed in eight categories in the Sydney Eisteddfod and DanceLife Unite Competition. Special congratulations to the Senior Ballet Performance Group which placed 2nd in the Sydney Eisteddfod, the Senior Contemporary Performance Group which placed 2nd in DanceLife Unite and Highly Commended in the Sydney Eisteddfod, and Redlands 1 (Dance as a Contemporary Sport) which achieved Highly Commended in the Sydney Eisteddfod. Well done to the other Dance groups who also performed at these events.

On the slopes of Perisher last weekend, George Murphy (Yr 10) won the Junior Moguls Series (8-19 Years), the largest Junior Moguls competition in Australia; and Sienna Wessels (Yr 8) placed 1st and 3rd in the Snowboard Futures Boarder Cross event at Mt Hotham. Well done to George and Sienna! This weekend our Sports teams contest their final ISA rounds before the Finals series and I wish them all the very best.

I sincerely thank all of the teachers, tutors, coaches, other staff members and parents who have supported our students in these wide-ranging achievements.

New Learning Hub Update

I am delighted to report that the concrete pour for Level 3 has now been completed and today, the first pour for the base of the large landscaped area which will link the New Learning Hub with the John Roberts Centre has been finished. The concrete pour for Levels 4 and 5 are scheduled to be completed this term with work to the external facade due to commence at the start of Term 4.

Reflection

Yesterday I was saddened to hear of the death of Toni Morrison, the first African-American woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. Like many other readers, Morrison’s novels moved me with their linguistic eloquence, emotional rawness and gripping reality. Former American President Barak Obama described her as a “national treasure… who reaches us deeply, using a tone that is lyrical, precise, distinct and inclusive. She believes that language arcs to the place where meaning might lie. And the rest of us are lucky to be along for the ride.”

In reading and listening to some of obituaries for Morrison, I was particularly struck by a quote of hers in response to a question about her confidence. She stated, “I was always gallant because I was always very comfortable with my flaws and very comfortable with my gifts”. To be as equally comfortable with our flaws as we are with our gifts is an eloquent way to describe one of the mindsets we continually aim to develop within our students across their various pursuits at Redlands.

Technology Addiction and Sleep – Wednesday 14 August 6.00-7.30pm

Good sleep is crucial to health and wellbeing. The use of digital devices, especially before bedtime, can have a major impact on sleep quality. Child psychiatrist Dr Philip Tam and sleep expert Lisa Maltman will discuss how to help your child create good sleep habits and avoid the pitfalls of too much technology. Dr Philip Tam is an award-winning child psychiatrist, researcher and pioneer in internet-related psychological disorders and video-game addictions. He will examine how to address these often-challenging problems in young people. Lisa Maltman is the founder of The Sleep Connection, established to meet the growing need to educate students, teachers and parents in schools on the importance of sleep health, and works closely with the Woolcock Medical Institute in Sydney, a body world-renowned in the area of sleep research. We are pleased to have Dr Philip Tam and Lisa Maltman present on these important topics on Wednesday 14 August from 6.00-7.30pm in Redlands Hall. All Secondary School parents are invited to attend. No RSVP is necessary.

Jeans for Genes Mufti Day

Last Friday was our Jeans for Genes mufti day where we raised money for the Children’s Medical Research Institute. This year we raised over $1600 for this worthy cause.

A Night to Delight

Last Friday evening was a wonderful night of entertainment and culinary delights spanning our different languages of Spanish, French, Chinese, Japanese and Latin at Redlands. Yr 8 Language classes performed on the night (along with a Chinese dragon dance performance) while some of our Yr 7 Language students were waiters and waitresses for the evening and the Yr 10 Language students developed the hotly contested Cultural Quiz. Some of the Yr 11 students who will be part of the Service learning trip to Cambodia later in the year also provided assistance throughout the evening and raised funds for their upcoming trip. I would like to thank the Language teachers for their efforts and organisation for this wonderful evening.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).

Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:

  • year of schooling
  • category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
  • level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.

This information assists schools to:

  • formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
  • consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
  • develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal (https://www.nccd.edu.au).

If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact Mrs Lisa Ole (Coordinator of Learning Support K-12) lole@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Chaplain

Experts in a field are always fascinating to listen to as they have so much passion, knowledge and experience seeing complexities that the person on the street may not even perceive. A group of Yrs 9, 10 and 11 students attended a Master Class on Tuesday with a History expert, Dr John Dickson, talking on the historical Jesus. He has PhD in History from Macquarie University, is an Honorary Fellow of the Department of Ancient History (Macquarie) and teaches at the University of Sydney. It was fascinating to hear him outline key research papers by secular researchers that acknowledge and embrace the New Testament as a reliable historical source with exceptional pedigree. He explained that there is not one professor of Ancient History or the Classics worldwide who doubt that Jesus existed. He also outlined key archaeological finds, especially in the last ten years, which confirm the accounts of the Gospels.

The students had an opportunity to ask questions and consider the historical Jesus and the implications this has for faith today.

All too often in popular media we hear claims and counter-claims with little erudite study to validate those claims. Yet they are repeated and loudly proclaimed so that soon they become accepted as true and yet may have not have a  basis in good research. It was a valuable opportunity to hear an expert who supported his claims with solid historical findings.

This is what makes Christianity unique, we base our claims and faith for the future, not on myth, or conjecture but on the solid historical reality of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Students and teachers alike returned assured of this historical basis for the Christian faith and enthused to continue their own investigations into the person of Jesus.

Parents who Pray

A small but dedicated group of parents gather to pray for our school community, teachers, Executive and students. If you are interested in joining us, our next meeting is on Wednesday 14 August in B.1.1 beginning at 8.30am and finishing by 9.15am.

Library

Book Week is on 17-23 August – the theme is Reading is my Secret Power.

In the Roseby Library, we have displays of short listed books in the Picture Book category, Information Book category and of course, the Older Readers category. The books are a wonderful range with something to delight every reader. The stand-outs in the Picture Book category are Cicada by Shaun Tan and Mediterranean by Armin Greder. In the Information Book Category, Make Believe about M.C. Escher is a stunning exploration of his mathematical art. The six Older Readers books are all quite different. Suspense, verse novel, road trip, teen angst and the totally unable to be categorised Lenny’s Book of Everything. Every single one a great read.  Come up, browse the displays, and borrow.

As part of our Book Week celebrations, the popular author Jack Heath will be visiting the Secondary School on 9 August. He will be speaking to Yrs 7  and 8 in the Roseby Library. Jack is the bestselling author of more than 29 action-packed books. His latest series Liars (Book 1 Truth App) has as its hero, Jarli. Jack wrote his first novel in high school and became a published author while he was still a teenager. His work has been translated into several languages and shortlisted for many awards. He is an entertaining and inspirational speaker. He will share his passion for books, writing them, reading them and, of course, talking about them. Now for a piece of trivia – he has changed his ringtone to a cough so he does not have to turn his phone off when he goes to the movies.

2020 Travel Opportunities for Yr 11

This week we held a parent and student session to introduce the trips available for Yr 11 students in 2020.

Throughout Secondary School, Redlands students have an opportunity to participate in a range of travel experiences that provide opportunities to develop an appreciation for the world around them, have opportunities to make positive contributions through learning about and from others, as well as making first hand connections between theoretical learning and real world application. These programs enable students to participate in projects that are identified by local communities, learning alongside local people.

In 2020 Yr 11 students will be able to choose between our annual trip to Cambodia to continue our support of M’Lop Tapang and experience the exhilarating culture of this tumultuous country. Or they could undertake an ecologically focussed and student centred expedition to Costa Rica. Both of these experiences provide challenge and adventure.

Stay tuned for further information about the other exciting travel programs happening in 2020 for Yr 9 and 10 students to consider later in the year.

Our 2019 students travelling to Fiji in the next school holidays have also met this week to reflect on their planning, anticipate and prepare for the trip and consider our expectations around responsible travel.

Jeans for Genes Day

Thank you to all of the students in both the Junior and Secondary Schools who wore denim in support of the Children’s Medical Research Institute We raised over $1700 to support their ongoing research programs.

Change Makers

Yr 11 students have been meeting on a regular basis to explore some of the challenging and topical social issues. We have developed a method of exploring these issues from a wide range of stakeholder perspectives, trying to delve into the ideas and develop our own individual position so that we can engage in the social debate. Our current issue under examination is Climate Change and we will be exploring, economic, scientific, social and community perspectives over the coming weeks.

Young People’s Plan for the Planet (ANU)

This is another Cocurricular group meeting on a weekly basis, ably led by two of our Service and Environment Prefects, Lachlan van der Plijm and Ben Piro. This group of Yr 10 and 11 students are examining how NSW measures up against the UN Sustainable Development Goals and considering what actions our State Government could take to ensure a sustainable future. We are collaborating with other student teams around the country.

Winter School

It has been a busy and adventure packed week at Winter School. The Campus now well and truly feels like home:

The scenery and animals around here are awesome. I’ve been watching the kangaroos. We also saw an echidna right outside our dorm!” Amelie Heard.

It has been really fun living in a community and spending time with everyone. I really enjoy having dinner with everyone in the hall.” Jacob Gold.

Staff have already commented on the fantastic and positive attitudes of the students.

In the first full week of the program, students were kept busy with two complete days of classes then three days of skiing in the morning and academic classes in the afternoon. Despite the busy schedule and rules, students are already noticing differences between classes here in the residential setting and classes in Sydney.

“There’s strict rules but it’s way more chilled than school in Sydney.” Grace Matthews.

On Thursday afternoon students explored Jindabyne and stocked up on snacks for the mountain. A full day of skiing and snowboarding was had on Saturday. Many have already improved in their skiing and snowboarding skills, exploring greater parts of Thredbo than ever before.

My instructor Sam took my group everywhere on the mountain!”  Madeleine Wilson.

Saturday was also the first time students were able to free ski with their friends in their small groups with a number of check-ins throughout the day.

Despite the energy spent on snow, it was soon replaced by s’mores galore during Saturday’s bonfire night. There’s also been lots of cake to celebrate the birthdays of three students this week. On Sunday students and staff enjoyed a much-needed sleep-in and then filled the seats at Jindabyne cinema for a screening of The Lion King . Sunday night was the Winter School Trivia Night where everyone’s brains were tested and challenged with sports, music, maths and all sorts of general trivia.

With an expected dump of snow this weekend, we’re looking forward to some more great experiences on the mountain.

Sleeping Tip of the Week

Bed is for sleep, not screens. Computers, phones and TV can disrupt your sleep. Your mind needs to associate being in bed with sleeping rather than watching TV or using your computer. Don’t stay in bed if you’re wide awake.

Driving to School

All students who are driving to and from school, are required to complete the Student Application to Drive To and From School form.

Any student who is travelling as a passenger in a vehicle driven to and from school by a Redlands student is also required to complete the Student Application to be a Passenger Form.

These forms are located in the Secondary School Office. Both forms will need to be signed off by the respective parents/carers, the driving student, the student passenger and Year Advisor with a copy of their licence before being handed in to the Secondary School Office.

Jeans for Genes Day

Ms Abe’s Tutor Group 10MG is to be commended for their enthusiastic support for Jeans for Genes Day.  They ably assisted students in Yr 3, who raised $670.00 through a Bake Sale at the Junior School. In the space of 15 minutes, all baked sale goods were sold out!

Reflection

“Jeans for Genes Day is a national fundraiser where people are encouraged to wear jeans to raise money and awareness for genetic disorders. As a part of this fundraiser, our Tutor Group, 10MG, visited the Junior Campus at recess to sell baked goods and snacks. Overall, there was great enthusiasm from everyone who participated as we rushed to serve the mob of Junior School students. We would like to thank all students and teachers from both campuses who brought in cupcakes, cookies, brownies and other snacks, as well as everyone who sold goods on the day. We would also like to congratulate the children who donated more than they needed to and continued to support the charity after we had sold out. Overall, we managed to raise a huge grand total for the Children’s Medical Research Institute: $670.40! It was such a fulfilling experience to give back to people in need and we hope that great outcomes in research can come out of the money we raised.” Josh Colleran and Theo Mirrlees-Black

August Study Skills Tip: The Importance of Quality Sleep for Students

Sleep is crucial not just for physical and mental wellbeing but for the consolidation of learning, and to ensure you perform in all your endeavours in peak condition. The absolute last resort should be to sacrifice sleep time in order to get things done.

How much sleep is right for you? This is tricky as everyone is different. Some lucky people need only six hours a night, most people need about eight hours and some people need ten hours!

Two ways to tell if you are getting enough sleep:

How quickly do you fall asleep at night? If you fall asleep instantly that can be a sign you are not getting enough sleep, it should take 10-15 minutes to fall asleep.

How do you feel when you wake up in the morning? If you feel tired and sluggish then that can also be a sign that you need to get to bed earlier.

Improving the Quality of Your Sleep:

  • Organise as much as you can at night to minimise what you have to do in the morning (eg. organise your clothes for the next day, pack your bag).
  • Try and have half hour to an hour before you go to bed without computers, TV, phone or any electronic devices or homework or chatting to friends. If you can’t do that, at least put the devices on night mode or turn the brightness down.
  • Set up a relaxing wind-down routine for before you go to bed. Do this same routine every night (eg. warm shower, reading, listening to quiet music) so your brain associates these activities with bed time and sleep.
  • A drop in body temperature near bed time triggers the sense that is time to go to sleep. So after a warm bath or hot shower, cool yourself down. It is also better at night to be cool rather than overheated.
  • When you lie in bed, start at your feet and mentally imagine relaxing each muscle as you slowly work your way up the body. Most people do not make it up to their head before they fall asleep!
  • In the morning open the curtains wide or go out into the sun and get lots of light to help wake your brain. Being exposed to lots of natural light during the day will also help the body produce the melatonin at the right time for a good sleep cycle.
  • A healthy breakfast will help to kick-start your body clock for the day.

Interesting Article of the Week

please read

The Kids Helpline website is a useful resource for both teenagers and parents, and this week I have attached an article from it regarding a topic that the students are covering in the Pastoral Care program. It concerns something, as parents, we are often confronted with when our child asks if they can attend an upcoming party. The article suggests a few simple choices that can keep teenagers in control so they don’t get in over their head.

Pastoral Care Program

This week students are learning about how they can stay save at parties by planning ahead before they go out with their friends. They will be learning how to recognise warning signs when someone is intoxicated and using the mnemonic ACTION, which stands for Altered conscious state, Continuous vomiting, Temperature changes; too hot, very cold, Irregular breathing, Odd behaviour, Not sure?.

Social Awareness Program

Students have begun watching a documentary which follows the lives of families who have been impacted by the war in Syria.

Visual Arts

To Elective students and all Yr 9 students with an interest in Visual Arts:
Visual Arts Extra Subjects run every school day (excluding Thursday) and is a great way to develop and expand artmaking skills and understanding. Extra Subject classes employ a studio approach to artmaking with students studying under the guidance of skilled media specific artists. A studio approach to extra subject classes ensures individual guidance whilst allowing for extensive and rigorous engagement with media.

National Science Week

The Science Department is celebrating National Science Week next week with a range of activities on offer to inspire curiosity and learning in students. Yr 9 students will be involved in the following:

Tutor Group Trivia Quiz – how much does each Tutor Group know about the landing on the moon and exploration of space?

Breakfast with a Scientist – Wednesday 14 August 7.45-10.10am (light breakfast provided). We have eight parent scientists (Weather Derivatives, Health Economist, Mathematician, Environmental Scientist, Pharmacist, Patent Attorney, Chiropractor and General Practitioner) coming to talk about their careers, what it involves, the interesting bits, the challenges and how they got there.

Science Fun in the Quad at lunchtime on Tuesday 13 August – Experience the wonder and magic of Science with fun hands-on experiments and amazing demonstrations from egg drops and spinning cups full of water to optical illusions and giant elephant toothpaste.

Paper Plane Competition on Friday 16 August at lunchtime in Redlands Hall – do you have what it takes to soar with the best? Can you throw a paper plane 20 metres or keep it aloft for 6 seconds? Planes must be made of one sheet of standard A4 paper with no cuts or additions.

I hope you have a wonderful week.

Pastoral Care – Resilience

In Pastoral Care, students are currently focusing on emotional awareness and self-regulation as an essential skill in building resilience. Emotional awareness and self-regulation is the ability to identify emotional experiences and to control emotional responses to external events. This will help young people to know:

  • being resilient is not about keeping things inside, but expressing how they feel and moving forward
  • expressing and understanding their own emotions is a key ingredient to resilience
  • recording how they feel in different situations can assist in keeping a check on your emotions and assist in developing the skills on how to move forward.
Summer Sport Registration

Students are required to compete their Summer Sport registration on iLearn. If your child is yet to do so, please make this a priority. Every student must complete the iLearn registration form. Details were sent to student emails via the Sports Department and are available on our Pastoral Care iLearn Page under Announcements.

Parent Teacher Interviews

We hope that you and your child found the Parent Teacher Interviews a valuable experience in assisting learning. Should subject specific questions arise, please contact Subject teachers or Subject Coordinators.

Term 3 Pastoral Care: Overcoming Setbacks and Working through Challenges

This term, our Pastoral Program focuses on self-reflection for behaviour management utilising the flowchart What happened? What did you think about it? How did you feel about it? How did you behave?.

We will continue to touch on digital citizenship, summarising notes and study skills with help from Dr Prue Salter’s Study Skills website and we will begin to focus specifically on the first three habits from 7 Habits of  Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey.

The Importance of Quality Sleep for Students – Dr Prue Salter

Head of Junior School

UPCOMING EVENTS

Please note that all Upcoming Events for the Junior School are now on their own Note Day article/page.

This Head of Junior School page will consist of general information from the Head of Junior School.

A Night to Remember!

What a wonderful showcase of musical talent and education we were treated to last Thursday night at the 2019 Junior Music Festival: Music Through the Decades

As I shared in my closing remarks, it was an absolute privilege for me to have the opportunity to acknowledge our talented staff and students and I know my sentiments were shared by everyone in attendance. Just as we challenge students to improve each year, every year I wonder how we can improve on the previous one and every year we do! Thank you also to parents who have shared similar thoughts with our Music staff and me.

There were so many teachers, tutors and support staff that came together with such collaboration to enable an event of this magnitude and I particularly acknowledge our Music team led brilliantly by Mrs Hilary Luck.

The joy and energy that emitted from the stage was palpable and I was also moved by the quality of both performance and song choices as the audience travelled back in time through the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.

This event is also one that allows every single student to perform on stage at least twice and this in itself, is significant and very special and amazingly, a number of our new students who just started in Term 3 were up on stage!

All in all, a truly memorable night; thank you for the music, Junior School.

Junior School House Athletics Carnival

Yesterday, bathed in stunning sunshine, the Olympic Athletics Training Stadium at Homebush was again the scene for a magnificent Junior School Athletics Carnival. As set out in assembly this week and by Mr Carter before the first event, the focus was on participation, enjoyment and sportsmanship and this was clearly evident throughout the day. Coupled with this, there were some wonderful personal bests achieved by most students.

Similar to our Junior Music Festival, this is an event that involves every single one of our Junior School students which is very important to us. Alongside this, the efforts and collaboration of teachers, coaches and medical staff enabled the event to run so well and with such high levels of student engagement. On behalf of the students, my sincere thanks are extended to our Sports Department of Mr Adrian Carter and Mrs Sarah Ellis, who led much of the pre-Carnival preparation and oversaw the day’s events.

Jeans for Genes Day

Last Friday, the School took to casual clothes in support of the annual Jeans for Genes day. On this day, Class 3L also hosted a bake sale to raise further funds for this particular charity that is poignant for two of their classmates. The bake sale raised a staggering $670.40 and the gold coin collection raised $600, providing a very healthy $1,270.40 to support the Children’s Medical Research Institute. Thank you to everyone for their monetary and culinary contributions, particularly the students and families of Class 3L.

Operation Christmas Child

At the very start of this year, I was approached with a charitable idea by Yr 4 student, Alexis Mar. Operation Christmas Child is run by Samaritans Purse, a not for profit organisation providing emergency relief and development assistance to suffering people around the world.

Operation Christmas Child is a project run every year where gift-filled shoe boxes are sent to children in poverty around the world. The shoe box the child receives is likely to be the only gift in their lifetime. Within each shoebox is:

  • Something to wear;
  • Something for school;
  • Something to play with;
  • Something for hygiene, and
  • Something to love.

Over the past four years, Alexis has been helping to change to lives of children in need by packing gift filled shoeboxes that are distributed around the world. She started doing this in 2015, after a conversation with her mum about how fortunate she was compared to so many other children her age across the globe and that Christmas, Alexis packed 24 boxes to be sent to children in need. Not satisfied with that, the following year, Alexis wrote a proposal to her mum’s employers asking if they would support a cupcake fundraiser. With their help, Alexis managed to pack 124 boxes. In 2017, Alexis ran her own cupcake fundraiser again and called upon friends and family. She also asked her friends to pack a shoe box to celebrate her birthday instead of giving her a present. Together they managed to pack 226 boxes! And so, to 2018, Alexis ran another cupcake fundraiser again, called upon the employees at her mum’s work and managed to pack 301 boxes! Her goal this year is to provide 350 shoe boxes and she is hoping the students, staff and families of Redlands can come together and support her, in order to reach this goal and help her change the lives of children in need.

Alexis shared that in her six years at Redlands, she has learnt the importance of our School Values, with Compassion being one that she feels great connection. Alexa’s empathy and drive was both inspiring and humbling and I hope that many us will help her achieve this target.

Look out for additional information in the coming weeks as we aim to have these boxes packed and ready by the end of Term 3.

Athletics Carnival

Last Wednesday a group of very excited Yr 2 students attended the Junior School Athletics Carnival at the Sydney International Athletics Stadium to compete in the 8yr Age Division, on what was a glorious Winter’s day. Congratulations to Julieta Ambrogio, Juliette Cortes, Sylvia Dagg, John Grinham, Charlie Hutchings, Bennett Kaye, Mila Lipscomb, Lily Maxwell, Amelia Russo, Aidan Schlederer, Emma Shoosmith, Anna Slack, Grayson Sloot and Kyler Simpson. A very special mention to Juliette Cortes who was overall Age Champion on the day, Emma Shoosmith and Aidan Schlederer were Runner Up Champions. Thank you to Coach Carter, the Junior School and HPE staff who supported the Yr 2 students and helped deliver an exceptional carnival.

Jeans for Genes

It was wonderful to see everyone in their jeans and denim last Friday helping support Jeans for Genes Day. Thank you to all the students and families who donated so generously to this cause and helped us raise $1048. As an exceptional gesture of generosity, Ella-Rose Young (One Green) donated a cloth bag full of coins and notes that she has been collecting since she was four years old. When I asked Ella-Rose whether she would like to think about keeping some of the money to buy something for herself, she said she had a room full of toys and didn’t need anymore. This message of contribution, empathy and compassion is a permeating theme in Ms Angus’ classroom, and I thank her for highlighting these life-long skills that are also present in our school values. Genes for Jeans will be joining the Prep School for Assembly on 19 August and making a special presentation to Ella-Rose for her generosity and kind spirit.

A Life Cycle

On Monday, Yr 2 students were very excited to find incubators containing eggs in their classrooms. Over the coming weeks students will be able to observe the growth and development of the chicks as they move through the different stages of the early part of their life cycle. This wonderful opportunity for an interactive approach to learning, helps students consolidate the Fur and Feathers Unit of Inquiry for Science.

“Today at lunchtime, Ms Cooper came out and told us to come inside because one of our chicks was about to hatch. We all were so egg-sited, we gathered around the incubator and watched the egg hatch. Now it is fully out but very eggs-hausted. The chick is very cute and chattery.” By Molly Crompton

Security Reminder

If you are on the School premises between 8.20am and 2.45pm and have received permission from the School, could you please enter through the Prep Reception only and collect a Visitor’s Badge. Throughout the day, if you would like to drop off any school items for your child, please do so at the Prep Reception, where staff will make sure it is delivered. This also applies, if you are collecting your child for an external appointment or if they are unwell. Arriving to school after 8.20am and taking your child into class or to the Library is not permitted and is a disruption to students and staff who have already begun morning preparations. If you arrive after 8.20am, Mrs Hunt or Mrs Rosling will gladly sign students into school, stamp their Student Planner with time of arrival and escort them to their class. Your cooperation is sincerely appreciated in this matter.

Seniors Integrating Technology

In ICT classes, Seniors are exploring how to use an existing picture to remix and create art with digital tools. Students are using an iPad and photo app to take a photograph and then editing tools to remix the image to create a new piece of art. After taking a photo of their hands, this becomes the canvas. They then edit this photo and use the drawing and mark up tools to reimage the hand as an artwork.

A suitable app for young learners to create art on the iPads is Sketches. It has options for creating art from an existing picture or photo and also for free drawing/painting/calligraphy. More information about this fascinating app can be found here.

Football

Round 9 was a great day for both our 1sts teams, with a 4-3 win over St Spyridon for the Boys and a 2-1 win over Oakhill for the Girls. Our 14A Boys are playing some impressive football as they prepare for the finals, with a 1-0 over St Spyridon. The 2nds Boys had a fantastic 3-0 win over SACS. The Inter A Girls played well in a 3-0 win over Central Coast. Best of luck to all teams this Saturday in Round 10, the final round of the regular season. We ask that all players arrive early or stay after their games this weekend to cheer on our 1sts Boys and Girls and 2nds Boys, as for some of these players it will be their last Home game for Redlands. We have a number of teams looking to secure their spot in the Semi Finals this weekend in what should be an exciting weekend of Redlands Football.

The End of Season Football Presentation will be held on Friday 6 September at Dee Why RSL.

Hockey

Last weekend saw our Girls 1sts have another tough loss. Despite some great attacking opportunities, and even a few short corners, we were unlucky to not score. We put up a competitive game against Barker and the girls should be proud of how they played.

The Girls 2nds played a solid game to come away with a 3-0 win against BMGS. The first half was not our best hockey but the girls were able to go into half time with some clear goals to improve on for the remainder of the game.

The Girls 3rds team had a fantastic 5-0 win against BMGS. They played with intent and purpose. A phenomenal amount of team work went into our five goals throughout the course of the game.

Hockey Presentation

Hockey students and families are invited to attend the 2019 Hockey Presentation lunch on Saturday 24 August from 12.30-2.00pm in the Top Quad, Senior Campus. The meal is a BBQ buffet plus dessert and costs $25pp (students and families, billed to the school). Students are to wear their Sports uniform.

Book here

RSVP essential by Monday 19 August, 5.00pm.

Netball

We are coming into the last round of the ISA Competition this weekend, with a number of teams looking to cement their positions for the finals beginning next week. Our 1sts, 4ths and Inter As have locked themselves into the Final series for next week, but will be looking for strong games this weekend to build momentum. Our 3rds are needing a victory against Barker 7 on Saturday in order to take 4th spot in their division. The ISA teams have played some great netball over the season, with some teams playing their best games over the weekend. Despite the score line, our Inter B team and our Senior 5ths had shown some great improvements, continuing to play the game in great spirits with smiles on their faces until the final quarter ended.

ISA training reminder: those teams who have made it through to the ISA Finals will continue to train on Tuesday and Thursday. Those teams who do not make the finals will only train on Thursdays until Week 6 when the summer season begins.

Our NSNA teams are continuing to show real  improvements with a number of teams looking for wins in the last two rounds in order to make the Finals. This will make for some exciting games to finish the competition.

The Redlands Netball Presentation Dinner will be held on Thursday 12 September at Norths Leagues Club. The Trybooking link for tickets will be available shortly.

Rugby

For our last Home round we hosted divisional rival Redfield, a school that has for a long while held over us in wins and losses.

Our 13s started off the day looking to gain some redemption from their heavy Round 2 loss to Redfield. Our 13s did not disappoint, hitting the opposition hard in defence and driving them back numerous times. This positive attitude allowed them to hit the score first. The game ultimately went against Redlands but the improvement as a group was there to see.

Our 14s came out swinging. In a back and forth match where tries were coming from all corners of the park, it looked like it was anyone’s game. Redlands needed to break the rhythm of the opposition, make their hits in defence knowing how it would lead to their attack. Redlands had the win 39-36.

Our 16s looked to put a lacklustre season behind them and really show what they can achieve. The game started brilliantly as Redfield could not put up with how physical Redlands was in defence. The match ended in a brilliant win for Redlands, against a team topping the competition ladder.

Our 1st XV received a lesson in our match, if you have no possession you cannot score. Redfield controlled the ball completely in the second half and even with incredible defensive efforts, we couldn’t get ourselves back in the game. Look to see our 1st XV aim up, with our side coming up against Redfield in the ISA Semi Final, a chance to put two disappointing games behind us and show our true colours.

Tennis

Round 9 of the ISA Tennis competition saw all six Redlands teams play the formidable Oakhill College. With most teams needing a win to stay in the running for a finals berth, the challenge was set. Our 1sts led the charge playing smart tennis to win the crucial points. Sebastian stepped up to play in the number one spot this week and played an outstanding singles match to walk away with a 6-0 win against the ISA number 2 player. A great team effort led the Firsts to a close but well-deserved win. All six of our ISA Tennis teams played confident tennis demonstrating great teamwork and communication winning nearly all of the doubles. A fantastic round of Tennis, testament to the time and effort students and coaches put into training each week.

The NSTA Winter Tennis season completed its final round on Saturday. The finals draw is available on Redlands Pulse – Rhino. All teams will play one last time for the season in either a playoff match or the final. Congratulations to the Blue team – Henry Charles, Bennett Evans, Xander Halfen and Thomas Jackson; the Green team – Alex Arnold, Jess Coleman, Zac Creighton and Abhi Singh for making the Yr 7 and 8 final; the Turquoise team – Edward Bush, Jett Miller, Danver Zhao, and the Lilac team – Aiden Allen, Jules Dickinson, Toby Page and Charlie Payne, for making the Yr 9-12 Final. Best of luck to all teams. Thank you to the parent helpers for assisting with umpiring.

Athletics Carnival

Glorious weather and the very impressive Sydney Olympic Park track played host to the Junior School Athletics Carnival  yesterday. With such great weather it was tough to keep the Carnival to time with so many students eagerly participating in the range of events on offer. Cowper again managed to stave off the other Houses in a closely fought battle with Dumolo, the big improvers, jumping into second place.

Age Champions and Runners Up and the Redlands Athletics team for HICES Carnival will be named in a short Assembly on Friday.

Many thanks to the fabulous Junior School staff who put in such a dedicated effort in creating a really fun filled and encouraging day for all students.

Term 4 Summer Sport Choices

Thanks to everyone who have put their summer choices in already. Some of the more popular sports have already filled their quota. Sports are limited in numbers primarily for safety and availability of equipment by our suppliers. We do our best to have everyone involved in a sport they are keen on, so if you’ve missed out on your first choice, do let us know on juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au and we’ll place you on a wait list.

AFL

AFL Girls are fired up and ready to go for their first round of matches this Saturday at Moore Park West.

Our Yr 5/6 boys will be looking to turn the tables on St Pats in their final round on 10 August.

The Yr 3/4 team will be involved in the AFL Spring Challenge, a series of Friday night matches with eight games over four weeks starting on 6 September. Yrs 3 and 4 boys interested in playing in Friday games should come and speak to Mr Carter in the Sports Office.

Rugby

Our Sevens Boys continue to turn up the heat on their opponents. This week in their final round of games, they’ll be taking on the toughest sevens teams in two matches across the morning. Wallaby Legend David Campese will be along at the Sevens to offer some tips and insights.

Yr 5/6 v Barker on Field 3 at 10.00am then v Newington Lindfield at 10.20am
Yr 3/4 v Knox Black on Field 6 at 8.40am then Newington Lindfield on Field 1 at 9.20am.

Football

This weekend sees the final round of matches for IPSHA Football. Having the Redlands Oval this year has enabled our first on-venue hosting for Football ever, so we welcome any parent feedback.

Our Yr 6 teams are being hosted by Mosman Prep as per the original draw with C team drawn as a bye. As we’ve played the whole season a squad, with players playing up and down across the grades, any players from the C team who are free and available are encouraged to attend the B match at 8.00am. Mosman Prep will be providing players and spectators with bacon and egg rolls and baked goods as a celebration of their Winter season. The A match is at 9.00am.

All other matches are as per the original draw.

Winter Before School Training Schedule

The Term 3 sporting calendar, showing all training, matches and events is available on Redlands Pulse.

For all trainings on the Junior School Oval, please use your own discretion in extreme rain and weather situations. Often parents and students will have left home to attend before we can make a realistic judgement on the weather. If there is no danger of lightning, nor heavy rain which would soak anyone training outdoors, our aim is to go ahead and run the session. Coaches and/or staff will be in attendance. It’s not always possible to find an alternative training venue, but students will be supervised until school begins in this circumstance.

Junior Music Festival

Music Through the Decades

Following an outstanding concert last Thursday evening, we would like to take the time to reflect on the exceptional achievements by students and staff who presented the annual Redlands Junior Music Festival, eloquently hosted by Junior School Arts Captains Daniel Koppers and Charlee Kwintner.

The students’ performances were exceptional, and included sophisticated Chamber Music repertoire through to energised and heart-felt whole school singing. The Finale to the concert, Thank You for The Music, certainly echoed the sentiments of lyrics through the children’s evident love of singing and music-making. Under the direction of Mrs Hilary Luck, the Junior Campus Music team created an outstanding concert that displayed evident growth in student skills and highlighted musical excellence across all Year Groups and Music Ensembles.

In recognising behind the scenes work, we acknowledge the important role that the Administrative team, Facilities team, Audio Visual team and Stage Management played in the organisation and delivery of such a streamlined and quality production. At the ‘heart’ of the Festival, so many wonderfully creative moments of music-making were captured, and the opportunities shaped by Music teachers, Ensemble Conductors and Music tutors alike, certainly provided a platform for students to develop their musicality, while sharing new and extended choral and instrumental skills with the wider School community.

We extend our thanks to our team of dedicated Junior School Music teachers, Ms Stephanie McInnes, Ms Danielle Vita and Mrs Susan-Gai Anderson for their guidance and creation of memorable curriculum performances linked to the students’ exploration of Music Through the Decades. We would also like to acknowledge the superb administrative support by Mrs Jacqueline McGlade in overseeing so many variable and logistics in administering a large-scale event.

In representing the diverse range of Music specialist skills across the department, we are fortunate to work alongside exceptional tutors who play lead roles as Conductors, musicians and Ensemble Assistants. These staff members include Mr Pete Atkins, Mrs Anne-Marie Braid, Mr James Clanfield, Mr Cameron Harker, Ms Annette Houghton, Mr Zi-Hao Li, Mr Nathan Milliner, Mrs Amy Richardson, Mr Nathaniel Smith, Mrs Mar’yana Sywak, Mr David Wooltorton and Mr Jason Xu, all supported by Stage Manager Ms Katie Paul and the Redlands Production team directed by Mr Harald Hummerston. We also would like to acknowledge the support of our AV team led by Mr Janis Auzins, in overseeing sound, lighting and the innovative addition of visuals that captured the performances live on stage.

Lastly, we would like to extended our thanks to the Head of Junior School, Mr Ari Guha, for his ongoing support of the Junior Campus Music program and encouraging all students’ musical endeavours, supported by dedicated Junior School teachers and the key role they play in supporting their classes for performance.

This celebration dinner includes a wide variety of entertainment and performances, culminating with achievement awards that are presented to students who have demonstrated leadership skills, musical excellence, service and overall dedication to the Music program. Auditions for Extensions Program (Week 4)

Extension Chamber Music, Jazz Vocal Ensemble and Stage Band

With the start of new repertoire in preparation for upcoming Term 4 events, the Extension Music program has opened enrolments for students interested in joining ensembles to further extend their music skills. Selection for participation in these ensembles is dependent on participation in CORE ensembles and in meeting the requirements of the audition process. Application forms can be found on Redlands Pulse or collected from Music Reception. Auditions will be held in Week 4.

Instrumental Competition Auditions (Week 8)

Please note: Entries are ONLY accepted when accompaniment scores are submitted to Music Reception at the time of the application submission.

The audition process will require students to demonstrate advanced technical skills, personal expression and understanding of style. For the audition, students will only need to present one work. A second contrasting piece will need to be considered at the time of the audition and discussed with the audition panel. This piece will not be required to be presented at the time of the audition but will need to be prepared and presented in advance of the Competition if the candidate is selected as a finalist.

Music Ensemble Rehearsals

All Cocurricular Ensembles will be rehearsing in Weeks 1-5 for Small Ensembles and will be preparing repertoire for consideration and selection of performers at the annual Music Awards Dinner on Friday 23 August (Week 5). Students will receive the opportunity to work with Music specialists in developing skills for performance in small ensembles.

Redlands Composition Competition

Thank you to all the students who submitted entries for the 2019 Music Composition Competition. Over the next fortnight, the adjudication panel will be determining which students are selected to move into the recording process.
