Interesting Article of the Week

This Friday 8 March is International Women’s Day 2019, celebrating the achievements of women and raising awareness about the inequality that exists between men and women across the world. This topic is particularly relevant for Yr 9 currently, as they are learning about gender inequality as their social awareness topic this term.

Being the mother of a teenage girl, as well as two teenage boys, gender equality is something that I truly hope will become the norm over the lifetime of my children, as I’m sure we all do. As Yr 9 are discovering this term, there is undeniable inequality that exists between men and women, and our young people have the ability to make changes to the world.

Cyber Bullying

Some of you may have heard of a concerning latest craze called the ‘Momo Challenge’. It is apparently a form of cyberbullying prevalent on platforms such as WhatsApp and YouTube through which children receive anonymous threatening messages, tied to pictures of ‘Momo’. Please be aware of this and perhaps have a conversation with your child to ensure they stay safe.

Mother’s Day Classic

A reminder to sign up for Sunday 13 May, the Mother’s Day Classic 5km run. More details are available on the Note Day Service page. I will be registering to run in the race and would love some company on the day! So please join me and other parents/teachers from Redlands for this worthwhile cause.

Public Speaking

Lunch and Learn – Free public speaking workshops in school: Masters Academy is running one more free lunch time session on Public Speaking (with nibbles provided) for students in L.1.4 on Thursday 14 March. Anyone is welcome. Please ask your son or daughter to drop in.

International Women’s Day and Dinner Opportunity

This Friday we will be having a whole school assembly on International Women’s Day, where a guest speaker from the organisation Room to Read Girls Education Program in Nepal will be presenting. As Yr 9 are currently learning about gender inequality, we are lucky enough to have two student places at a dinner in Sydney on Thursday 14 March. Please ask to see your child’s email from me for further details. Click here if you wish to know more about this organisation.

Pastoral Care Program

This week students have been looking at cyber bullying: what it looks like and what their response should be to it as a victim, a perpetrator and a bystander.

Social Awareness Program

This week students are creating a presentation regarding their chosen organisation on gender inequality, which will take a few weeks to complete.
