Navigating My Online and Offline Worlds

Our pastoral program this term continues to focus on navigating the challenges of having both an online and offline world. We have taken a two-fold approach of asking students to consider how they are presenting themselves and their digital persona, as well as providing students with the opportunity to investigate some of the potentially harmful behaviours that they may come into contact with.

This week in Tutor, students were asked to examine the website of the eSafety Commisioner and investigate some of the current issues and behaviours that they need to be aware of when engaging online and the strategies that can be used to protect against these. 

Some of the current issues that students investigated in Tutor this week include:

• Online Hate: Online hate can be defined as any hateful posts about a person or group based on their race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability or gender.
• Disturbing Content: Coming across something you’d rather not see when you’re online. It can include content that’s disturbing or distressing because it shows a seriously violent or offensive event. You can do something about it.
• Trolling: Trolling is when someone posts or comments online to deliberately upset others. 

It is always worth reminding ourselves of the need to be vigilant online and it was good to hear the discussion had this week about these issues.

Book Week

This week, the Redlands Library team is celebrating Australian School Library Day, a significant event across Australian schools. Conveniently, it is wedged within Book Week, which celebrates the love of reading. Therefore, the entire week will be all about promoting the incredible resources that school libraries like our offer, highlighting the importance of qualified library staff and the impact libraries have on the school community at large. All week, students have been taking part in the festivities and sharing in the joy of literature within Roseby Library as well as some of their timetabled classes.
