Year 9

Important Events

Monday 14 July: Yr 9 into Yr 10 Information Night

Yr 9 Parent Teacher Evening

Thank you to all of your time dedicated to the Parent Teacher Evenings this week. Students were reminded prior to the evening that while this is a fantastic opportunity for teachers and parents to connect and discuss specific feedback regarding academics, it is ultimately the student’s responsibility to make changes and turn the feedback into action.

Cowper Yellow Tutor – Best Wishes to Mr Luke Cantrill

Luke joined Cowper Yellow during Quarantine last year and met his Tutor class via Zoom. Several Yr 9 students have had the honour of working with him in Tutor and/or through History class. His students quickly grew fond of his teaching style as well as his care and support for his students. Luke is moving to Canada during this term break and he will be sorely missed. We wish him all the best and prepare to welcome a new Tutor to the Yr 9 cohort next term.

Congratulations and Celebrations

Alissandra Braden sailed 3 days last weekend at the Sailing East Coast Championship. She earned 5th place and was 1st Female Skipper. Congratulations to Alissandra for her exceptional performance last weekend, all while injured to boot.

Grace Durrant is congratulated and wished all the best for being selected to compete in the Surfing NSW State Championships in July. Good luck, Grace!

Jess Van Extel is congratulated and wished all the best for being selected to compete in the Hockey NSW State Championships this month. Good luck, Jess!

NSW CIS Cross Country Carnival

Congratulations to all students who competed in the NSW CIS Cross Country Carnival this month. Coach Nick Walker reported that the conditions were tough. Students were running in 5 degree weather and rain which made the course muddy and slippery. Congratulations to all students for their performance. Special recognition goes to the following Yr 9 students:

Boys 15Y 4k – Isaac Brooks 14th (14:52), Charlie Parker 36th, Gianmarco Pradel 38th

Girls 15Y 4k – Eva Osborne 43rd

Languages Project Winners

Last week at assembly, the Language Research Project winners were presented with their certificates. The awards were for best demonstration of cultural awareness, most creative and best use of technology, as voted by students’ peers and teachers. Well done to all students for the positive, collaborative and reflective approach they demonstrated in their projects and special congratulations to the winning students on their achievements.

Preparing Academically for Term 3

During this term break, it is a fantastic opportunity for students to revisit their Assessment Calendar linked in Redlands Pulse. Next term, students do have assessments spread throughout the term and several assignments will begin to compound if not planned in advance. Students will have the opportunity to map out their term with their Tutors and Tutor Group in Term 3 Week 1. However, additional time noting due dates, backwards planning and revisiting how to chunk larger assignments is recommended. Please see Dr. Prue Salter’s advice by encouraging your teen to work through the modules: Managing your Workload and Assignment Skills.

ICAS Science

The 2021 International Competition and Assessment for Schools (ICAS) in Science will take place on Monday 23 August in school. This competition is undertaken by over 400,000 students across Australia and the region and is a rigorous test of scientific thinking. Participation in the competition provides our students with excellent examination practice and an opportunity to see how they fare in competition with students of their own age from across the country. Students who are interested in Science can use the test to assess areas of strength and weakness. Success at the test is a way of demonstrating aptitude when applying for Science related opportunities in and out of school.

Entry for students in Yrs 7-10 is voluntary. Please complete the form here Registration for ICAS before Monday 26 July if you would like them to take part. (Please note earlier registration date.) A fee of $16 will be charged to your account if you wish your child to participate. More information about  ICAS can be found here.
