Year 12
Life Beyond School Workshops – Insurance and Car Maintenance
The transition from Yr 12 to post-secondary education or work is an important journey in the life of every student. It is both an ending and a beginning. Preparation for this transition while in school is one of the major focuses in our Yr 12 Pastoral Care program this year. To enrich students’ toolboxes, several life skills workshops/seminars have been organised in the hope of giving them the best place for achieving their goals. Some of the workshops include financial literacy, information on renting and basic car maintenance knowledge. We encourage the cohort to “hang in there”, particularly when they feel overwhelmed, soon there will be the light at the end of the tunnel.
Last Friday, Tasman Forest gave a “which is which” automobile presentation to Cowper Blue Tutor Group by using Ms Shorter’s car. For many of them, it was the first time they were properly acquainted with an automobile, such as identifying the major components in a car and learning how these parts operate. All participants, including the staff, were so impressed by Tasman’s extensive knowledge of cars. His enthusiasm reminded me of the quote “pursue your passion, and everything else will fall into place”. Well done, Tas! I would also like to thank Ms Shorter for lending her car for this event. The other Tutor Groups will take turns in this session with Tasman later this term.
Earlier this week, Ms Coleman gave a talk on Insurance. She presented several types of insurance with close relevance to students’ life beyond school, covering travelling to schoolies, being a young driver and protecting home contents or personal belongings. Thank you Ms Coleman for volunteering your time for this presentation and your care for our Year Group.
Lunchtime Study Room T1 and T2
Since last term, two classrooms have been offered exclusively to Yr 12 students for a study space during lunch times. T1 is used for individual silent work, T2 for collaborative study. Students can have lunch while catching up with work, either independently or through peer discussion. We encourage more students to use these two rooms to contribute to their ongoing learning and time management. Students are also reminded to maintain the tidiness of the classrooms.
Gala Arts
Ms Shorter and I would like to wish every Yr 12 student involved in Gala Arts the best of luck. We are very much looking forward to Friday night, especially the Yr 12 Showcase.
ANSTO Visit
Last Friday, Yr 12 Physics students visited the ANSTO, the only nuclear reactor in Australia. As a research reactor, ANSTO carries out world-leading nuclear and accelerator Physics research, as well as providing products for industry and medicine. Students had a tour of the whole facility, including the OPAL reactor and the recently opened ANSTO Nuclear Medicine facility (ANM).
When in full production, the ANM will produce 25% of the global supply of Molybdenum-99, used in diagnostic nuclear medicine procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of heart, lung and muscular skeletal conditions, as well as a variety of cancers.
ANSTO is a great example of a research facility working in partnership with industry as well as carrying out fundamental research, highlighting the importance of science investment to the Australian economy as well as its place on the world stage.
