International Women’s Day Celebration at Parliament House

On Thursday 7 March, we had the pleasure of attending the NSW Young Women’s Leadership Seminar for Yr 11 students at Parliament House. The day consisted of presentations from women in leadership positions within Parliament House as well as an insight into the buildings and day to day life for women in Parliament. From this experience we learnt a lot about the importance of women in the workplace and their role as our representatives. The seminar focused on holistic equality, and the speakers stressed the importance of change achieved by both men and women. Madison O’Grady, the keynote speaker of the day at the age of only 21, is an influential figure for mental health activism for women and young adults, running her own organisation High Tide. The most significant ideas that she shared was to make connections early and stay true to your personal authenticity. Later in the day, after exploring the Chambers of Parliament, we heard from two female members of the Legislative Council, the Honourable Courtney Huossos from the Labour Party, and Cate Faehrmann from the Greens. In these presentations, both women stressed the importance of healthy competition and sticking true to your moral compass. The day wrapped up with talks from Parliament House’s female executives, including the Head of IT Helpdesk, Executive Chef and Head of Construction and Engineering, who shared their journeys reaching prominent leadership roles in predominantly male workplaces. Overall, the day was an amazing experience that we are very grateful for. Special thanks to Ms Wilson for attending and facilitating this unique experience, and also to Mr Atkins for arranging it. Without them this day would not have been as special. Madeleine Howard and Phoebe Rathbone
