Year 11

This Monday saw a number of Yr 11 students assisting in the Secondary School Transition Session for Year 6 students and parents. A big thank you goes to Jemma Davies and Alex Gibbs, who were on the panel with the Heads of Junior School and  Secondary School, as two former Junior School students participating in a Q&A session regarding their experiences at Redlands, and to all Yr 11 students who helped with the tour of the School for Year 6 parents.

NSW Teams Racing States Regatta Review by Alex Gibbs

Last weekend, a group of Redlands sailors participated in the NSW State Regatta for teams racing at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. We sailed extremely well over the three days, with minimal previous training. Versing a number of interstate teams, our team came 6th overall out of 24 teams, with Redlands being ranked as the 1st coeducational school. After a weekend of shifty winds, we qualified for the Finals in a heated race against Scots. Our team worked collaboratively with members from last year in school sailing to combine skills. Periods of strong and light winds made for challenging conditions, but we remained adaptive throughout Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It has been such a rewarding experience for us – Alex, Henry, Gianni, Jameson, Katina, Ollie and Will. Following on from the regatta, we await the announcement of the teams that will qualify for the Nationals.

Netball Review by Julia Saunders

Last week my team and I played our first actual Netball game for the ISA competition. It was a really challenging but fun game against the Barker 2nds and we were really proud to secure a win for the first game! My team and I have been training very hard since the holidays with multiple skill-based trainings and fitness sessions each week and we were very happy that our hard work paid off in our game. Given that most of our team hadn’t played together before or at least for several years I was extremely proud of how well everyone played! From the defensive end to the midcourt and to the shooters, everyone put in so much effort and kept both the team’s morale and spirits high.

Playing sport and especially Netball in my final years at school continue to have such a positive impact on my social, mental, and physical wellbeing. At the end of the day after hours of studying in a classroom, training with your friends is such an enjoyable way to take a break from my studies and to have fun with my friends, while getting some exercise. I have met some of my closest friends while playing sports not only from my own year group but with players from other year groups as well. I can’t wait to see where the rest of this season takes us, and I am excited to continue playing Netball throughout my final two years.

Have a great week!
