Year 10
NSW School Vaccination Program 2019
Each year NSW Health works with schools to offer the vaccines recommended for adolescents by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). On Wednesday 12 June, the Yr 10 Meningococcal ACWY single dose vaccine will be offered. Parent Information Kits have been handed to students and we ask that you read all the information provided, complete the immunisation consent form and return the completed form to your child’s Tutor before Monday 3 June. If your child has received any vaccines in the past 12 months, please include a copy of the vaccination record attached to the immunisation consent form, as a separate sheet or as an email to smatthews@redlands.nsw.edu.au. This could be a report from your GP, or a letter from you including the name of the vaccine and the date given. Further information about the Meningococcal AWCY vaccine is available here.
Yr 10 Examinations
Students are to be commended for their behaviour and engagement during last week’s examination period. Yr 10 students applied themselves well and completed their exams with a sound and focused attitude. Furthermore, it was pleasing to note that students heeded instruction and went directly home at lunchtime to study. We were pleased that students rose to the School’s expectations and weren’t seen congregating around Cremorne post their exams. I would like to extend sincere thanks to our Tutors as they have worked tirelessly with students in past weeks to assist them to develop sound attitudes to study as well as assisting students to hone their examination technique. Lastly, much thanks must go to you, the parents, for your care and encouragement of your sons and daughters. We are grateful for your continued support.
Post Examination Wash-Up
As teachers and parents we all share high expectations for our Yr 10 students. Although high achievement may be front and centre in the minds of many parents, I would ask that during the coming days as results are returned to students we all endeavor to take a balanced view. It is inevitable that students may perform better in some subjects than in others. We encourage students to celebrate their achievements, acknowledge where perhaps more revision may have been needed and to remember that giving of one’s best is the most important takeaway from this formal examination period. I would ask that you encourage your sons and daughters to take balanced view of their results and implement suggestions from their teachers in relation to examination feedback. Both Mr Walker and I have encouraged students to remember that they are to ‘run their own race’ and not to compare their results with others. We encourage students to focus on incremental improvement, no matter how small, from one semester to another, as the cumulative effect will pay significant dividends in the long run.
Yr 10 Industry Day
A special thanks to Ms Simone Salier for her wonderful organisation of the Yr 10 Industry Day on Friday 24 May. On Monday morning students were still abuzz with news from the day and the general consensus was that students found it a thoroughly worthwhile experience. Well done to Julian Falcomata who won a cash prize for a photograph he took at Canon on the day. Mr Walker and I accompanied 22 students to Westpac at Barangaroo. Students toured the Barangaroo Tower to view the agile workspaces and gain an understanding of the environmental credentials of the building. Our students were able to understand the breadth of job options available at such a large bank through their experiences on the day. Students visited Financial Markets where they learned about FX and bond trading and were lucky enough to view the trading floor. In addition, they spoke with private bankers at Westpac Private Wealth and were treated to a superb hot meal at lunchtime.
Yr 10 Drama
Mr Walker and I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to view the Yr 10 Drama Assessment performances on Monday and Tuesday nights this week. The standard was exceptionally high and students are to be commended for their confident and accomplished performances.
