ySafe CyberSafety Workshop Presented by Dave Smith

This week, Yr 10 were very fortunate to engage in the ySafe CyberSafety Workshop presented by Dave Smith focusing in Cyberbullying, Nudes and the Law and Respectful Relationships as well as a short summary on gaming. While students are familiar with these topics, Dave presented facts, scenarios and advice that caught the attention of all students as they listened attentively throughout the workshop.

As we are currently focused on Healthy Relationships in Tutor, these topics have been woven into many discussions from PDHPE last year, Tutor this year and each day in the playground.

A few takeaways from the workshop include:

  • Use the #probs acronym for assessing potential cyberbullying – Perception, Reach, Outcome and Better Solution
  • Practice diffusing situations to avoid the “joke to drama”
  • Common etiquette practiced in the classroom, in the playground and in friendship groups also applies online
  • Sexting or sending nudes is considered a federal crime under the age of 18
  • Sending non-censual images or forwarding images sent to you can result in fines and possible jail time
  • 27% of young adults send nudes and 12% forward them without consent
  • What to do if someone is cyberbullying you or coercing you to send a nude or inappropriate images?

Please see the Redlands Online Safety Hub for more information and resources. Parents have access to this informative website.  Thank you for your support in speaking with students at home about these important topics.
