Service and Social Engagement

Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal

Bright and early on Sunday last weekend, over 90 Yr 11 students participated in the Red Shield Appeal Door Knock covering the area around our school. At the start of the morning we were joined by Mr Trent Zimmerman MP, Member for North Sydney. Seven of our Yr 12 students. ably led by Service Captains, Isabel Binnekamp and Lachlan van der Pluijm, managed the counting house processes at the conclusion of the day, reconciling receipts issued with donations collected. The total amount collected on behalf for the Salvation Army was an amazing $6,205.00.

Matthew Talbot Winter Donations Appeal – Socks Undies and Toiletries

As you may know, Redlands has a long association with the Matthew Talbot Hostel for homeless men in Woolloomooloo. Now that the cold weather has finally arrived in Sydney, please turn your thoughts to making a contribution of new socks, warm underwear and toiletries for our winter appeal. Picking up a few items in your normal weekly shop and bringing them into school will mean that the Hostel has a good supply of these items which are either sold in the small onsite store or are given out to the temporary residents in the Hostel. Last year we were able to contribute ten large boxes of donated items that were very much appreciated.

Travelling Overseas in the Holidays?

Please keep in mind that if you are travelling during the holidays and have an opportunity to pick up toiletries from the plane or hotels, please bring them in as we can pass these on to the Matthew Talbot Hostel as well.

Social Engagement Opportunity – Young Person’s Planning for the Planet

We hear so much press about the climate crisis and it can seem insurmountable but here is the chance for students to look at positive actions that need to be taken.

We have been offered an amazing opportunity to make a real and proactive contribution towards planning for a positive future for the planet. This project would involve a team of passionate Redlands students preparing a plan for a sustainable future for NSW. This plan would ultimately be part of a broader plan for Australia. The project is coordinated by Ian Chambers from ANU with program advisors from UTS, Curtin, UNSW, Questacon and UNESCO, to name a few. The resulting plan will be presented by students to the NSW and Federal Governments and then go on to be presented at a Young Person’s Plan for the Planet conference in Singapore at the end of this year.

This cocurricular project opportunity is particularly relevant to students studying Geography and Environmental Systems and Society as well as a wonderful Social Engagement/CAS opportunity.

It would also obviously be a tangible way to support any future applications to universities that are shifting their focus beyond the ATAR when offering places to their programs. The program will kick off in the coming weeks and will carry through to the end of this year.
