Yr 10 Sleepout

Redlands Sleepout preparations are underway. Students will be sleeping out on Thursday 28 June at school. Like the CEO version, the Redlands Sleepout is an opportunity for students to better understand the realities of homelessness by experiencing it, if only overnight. We will be sleeping under the Gym and having a soup kitchen dinner. We have arranged a number of guest speakers for the evening who can offer valuable insights into homelessness and specifically some of the challenges associated with youth homelessness. The following morning students will be actively participating in a range of follow-on activities. The empathy students can gain from the Sleepout experience will hopefully be matched by their engagement in a series of action and reflection sessions at School during the morning after the Sleepout.

There is a fundraising element to this event. We will be fundraising in Tutor Groups for either Taldumande Youth Services who support vulnerable children, young people and their families through crisis response, residential care and specialised casework. We will also be supporting Orange Sky Laundry, a world-first, free mobile laundry service for people experiencing homelessness. Each student in Yr 10 is encouraged to seek personal sponsorship of at least $25.00 as part of this initiative. Collectively we hope each Tutor Group will strive to exceed a combined target of $500.00.

Yr 8 SIMS Visit

Yr 8 will be visiting the Sydney Institute of Marine Science tomorrow. They will be exploring the impact we have on our local marine environment and putting into practice things they have covered in Geography and Science so far this year. It is important that they come dressed in their PE uniform, preferably wearing their tracksuit pants and warm fleece, as we will be outside for much of the day. Students will also need to bring their recess and lunch as we will not have access to the shops for the day.

Matthew Talbot Winter Donations

Winter is upon us and this is an especially challenging time for people who are homeless. Please consider making some donations to the Winter Appeal for the Matthew Talbot Hostel. Redlands has had a long association with Matthew Talbot, with our Yr 11 students and volunteer teachers attending on Monday morning every week of the year to serve breakfast. At this time of the year and again at Christmas, we seek donations of new socks and underwear, basic toiletry items such as toothpaste and toothbrushes, soap, hand sanitiser, shampoo and second hand bath towels in good condition.

Donations can be brought to school any day from now until Week 2 next term. Every Tutor Group will have a box for collections. We hope to be able to fill 48 boxes in the Secondary School.
