Head of Sport

It is with pleasure we formally welcome Ms Renae Camino to Redlands, to the appointment of Director of Coaching: Basketball.

Many students and parents already know Renae from her previous work at the School as a casual Basketball coach. Renae was an AIS graduate and represented Australia in Basketball at both Junior and Senior levels. She played in the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) from 2004 to 2014 and was drafted into the WNBA, as well as winning the WNBL Rookie of the Year in 2004 and MVP in the 2007/08 season.

Renae has represented Australia at both the World Championships and the FIBA Oceania Championship for Women. Just this week, she was selected into the Australian Women’s 3 v 3 team to compete at the World Championships in China. With an extensive coaching background and having worked with State Development coaches across multiple age groups, divisions and teams, Renae was also part of the coaching team for the NSW Metro U18s Basketball team at the recent National tournament held in Bendigo.

Renae is married to Tom Garlepp (Sydney Kings player) and is the mother of two sons Max and Hunter. Just recently, she has stepped back on to the court to play with the Norths Basketball Association in their ABA Waratah Championship Women’s League, proving motherhood is no barrier, as she is currently the top scorer in the league.

Renae has worked at Redlands in a casual coaching capacity for several years with success across multiple age groups and we look forward to having her on board in a permanent role to develop the Basketball program at Redlands into the future. As an excellent coach and role model for all our students, we warmly welcome her to the Sports department.

The Importance of the Coach

The coach to athlete relationship is the single most important aspect for the learning and development of our students within all Sports programs at Redlands.

We currently employ over 100 casual coaches across our sports. Our coaches represent the single most important resource within the Redlands sporting program. The recruitment and professional learning of our coaching staff is a key strategic goal that our Sports program at Redlands continually strives to achieve and the newly appointed Directors of Coaching across our major sports programs are a critical component of building this capacity. If our coaches can continue to instill in our students a ‘love and passion’ of sport and a willingness to learn new skills, then Redlands Sport will enhance the education of all its students both present and into the future.

Athletics

Athletics training will begin on Friday 1 June from 3.30 – 5.00pm and will take place at Balmoral Oval in partnership with the Mosman Athletics Club. If you are interested in participating in these trainings please see Mr Ellis in the Sports Office to register your interest. More information can be found on Redlands Pulse Athletics

Cross Country

A sunny Saturday and another Cross Country Carnival to run in to help improve the racing skills of students in the lead up to the ISA Carnival next week. Saturday saw three Redlands students compete in the Scots invitational Cross Country Carnival held at North Ryde Common. In the 4km event, about 160 boys and a few girls including Redlands students, Emma Mahon and Saskia Jane, tackled the hilly technical course. In a very competitive field Emma ran a strong race to finish 23rd overall and was the first female and first ISA competitor across the line. Saskia also ran well to finish 67th, beating over half of the male competitors. The second event of the day was the 6km event. Redlands had Ben Kittle representing the School at this distance. Ben had a great run and was able to improve his placing from last week, finishing 72nd from a very strong field of 170 competitors. Ben was the first ISA male across the line. Congratulations to all three students for competing and representing Redlands at the Cross Country Carnival.

Football

In Round 3 many of our Redlands teams travelled to play St Spyridon. We came away with mixed results for both our boys and girls. A special mention to the 13A Boys who had a very convincing 4-0 win. A great effort from the 1st XI Girls Football against Barker. Barker started the game strongly and had led 2-0 at half time. Our girls presented a united front and showed that they can play and compete with the top teams in the competition. Despite the final score being 3-1 to Barker, our girls definitely showed what they are capable of.

Round 4 will be an exciting round with all of our teams playing at Macquarie University. Our boys teams will have some tough fixtures against St Pius, with a few of our teams looking for their first win of the season. The girls will play against Central Coast and Oakhill and are hoping to continue their success so far this season.

Please ensure you check Redlands Rhino carefully on Redlands Pulse as there have been a number of changes to the Football fixture for this week.

Netball

Some strong performances from our ISA Junior A and B Netball teams have seen them jump to the top of the leaderboards in their respective divisions, It is great to watch the girls play with a sense of no fear! This week the Junior As travel with the 1st VII and the Inter A teams to take on Chevalier College, and the Junior B team take on Oxley College. It will be some tight fixtures across the grades! Be sure to rug up with clothes and blankets as it can get very cold in Bowral.

We have had some great results in the NSNA competition with our Yr 7 teams showing some strong performances in the opening rounds. All three teams now sit inside the top four and are all looking very impressive throughout their fixtures.

A reminder about our open Netball skills sessions on Thursday mornings in Dunnet Hall (7.00 – 8.00am). These are open to all Secondary School Netball players and are a great way to get some extra skills sessions in.

Rugby

The Under 14s travelled to Bathurst over the weekend and looking to follow up their impressive win against BMGS the week before, they did not disappoint. The 14s put on a fantastic display of controlled attacking Rugby and some brilliant effort in defence to eventually win the game with a comfortable 58-10 score line. There were some amazing individual efforts throughout the entire game with Cristian Hill, Hunter Auld and Fynn Leach running from all corners of the park. The best aspect of this game was, despite some individual efforts, the win was off the back of an all-out team effort. Harrison Fung had a blinder at halfback along with Hugh Sellars, who was brilliant through the backline with some great carries and huge hits in defence. The highlight of the match has to go to Jack Baker who made a great run through the defence, stopped on a dime with some amazing footwork and then burrowed through the last defender for a fantastic try. It was an incredible match and thank you to all of the parents who unfortunately had to witness me jumping up and down the side line with the other coaches – fantastic rugby to watch.

Tennis

What a fantastic weekend for Redlands Tennis with all our teams recording wins. Our 1sts played really well and dominated St Andrew’s (6-2) at Moore Park. The 2nds had another convincing performance and were able to comfortably beat St Andrew’s (6-2). The 3rds produced some excellent tennis to secure an impressive victory (6-2). The 4ths were too strong for their St Andrew’s opponents at Cammeray (6-2). Well done to all players. Please make sure you check the coming weekend’s fixtures.
