“What we measure shapes what we collectively strive to pursue — and what we pursue determines what we measure”. Stiglitz-Sen-Fitoussi
As summer sport comes to a close and winter sports begin, it is important we take this time to reflect on the improvements our students have made. At Redlands, continual monitoring and reviewing of our Sports programs is essential to the development of our students. But first and foremost we must be sure that what we are reviewing is pertinent to the outcomes and goals we want for our students within Sport.
Too often we can get caught in the trap of only measuring our success from our competition results. Whilst this is always a reliable and quantifiable indicator of improvement, it is not the only thing that we should be measuring. Within youth sport, and most notably within Redlands Sport, we must be stay focused on the development of life skills achieved by students from one season to the next. Improvements in things such as:
- Mental toughness
- Resilience
- Communication skills
- Teamwork
These are often far more important learning outcomes than just the scoreboard results, yet we often overlook them when we are measuring our success.
One of the best ways of measuring this is seeing how students respond in different situations and environments. I often refer to these situations in sport as the perfect “learning opportunities” for our students. Examples of these learning opportunities include a physically demanding Rowing ergometre training, a Swimming race involving a 0.02s difference between 1st and 2nd, a Touch Football player’s mental approach before a final or how a Basketballer communicates with team members after a heavy loss.
How our students conduct themselves in these moments will often provide coaches or staff with the most valuable insight into the success of our Sports programs at Redlands and the education of the students within them.
It is finding out how we can measure these in an accurate and reliable manner and then communicate it to our community that is important. Currently we use a variety of surveys to gain insight into these types of skills but in the future, a formal style of reporting may be available for students and coaches.
Please note a full run down of the ISA Swimming Carnival held on Wednesday at SOPAC will be provided in next week’s newsletter.
Redlands Inaugural Sports Luncheon
In 2019 we are proud to be celebrating 120 years of Sport at Redlands. In honour of this occasion we will be hosting a Redlands Sports Luncheon at Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. The lunch will include a panel of four Redlanders across the years who have represented their country or played sport professionally who will reflect on the influence sport has had on their lives and what it means to them today. The panel will be hosted by the Head of Secondary School, Mr Sean Corcoran and Head of Junior School, Mr Ari Guha. This will be a fantastic event for the Redlands community to come together and share stories and experiences in sport in a social setting. Be sure to book a ticket with a group of fellow parents from within the Redlands community. An event not to be missed!
Basketball
Congratulations to all the teams who competed in the Basketball Finals over the weekend. Of the 11 teams that we had in the Finals, five teams came away as the Championship team for their respective division. The Junior A and Junior B Girls started the day off well for Redlands. The Junior B Girls got off to a flying start and a great lead which saw them dominating at both ends of the floor for the entire game. The Junior A Girls were trading baskets with Chevalier for the majority of the first half. It wasn’t until mid-way through the second half that they were able to get away and win the game comfortably in the end. The Open B Girls played a great game. They knew they were up against a tough opponent in Central Coast and spent most of the first half with an even score line. The game was close all through the second half and as soon as one team got a lead, the other team would match their efforts to tie the game back up. Two last minute baskets saw our team win the game by four points in what was a great way to finish a great season. Going into the game undefeated, the 14D Boys were confident but knew they couldn’t be complacent. It was a low scoring first half for both sides, but in the second half Redlands really found their stride and finished the game with a great win. The 17B Boys knew it would be a tough game against an undefeated St Augustine’s team but went into the game well prepared and managed to beat the top team in the Final.
Well done to the Inter A Girls, 14B Boys, 15B Boys, 17C Boys, Open B Boys and Open C Boys for your efforts in the Final. All teams should be very proud of their efforts and achievements over the course of the season.
Thank you to all players and parents for your support in what has been another great year for Redlands Basketball. We look forward to celebrating with the Basketball community at the dinner tonight.
Football
Thank you to all players for their efforts in the Football trials this week. Please note there are trials this Saturday 16 March. The schedule for these trials is available on Redlands Pulse. We hope you are looking forward to the 2019 Redlands Football season.
Hockey
On Tuesday 12 March, Freya Gait (Yr 8), Eloise Trueman (Yr 8) and Sophie McMillan (Yr 9) attended the ISA 16 Years and Under Hockey trials out at Moorebank Hockey Fields in what was a tough day (heat and competition wise), the girls were put through their paces. Congratulations to Sophie who was selected to compete at the CIS 16 Years and Under competition in a few weeks. Eloise was also selected as a shadow player.
Indoor Hockey
The Indoor Hockey team had a tight victory over Queenwood last Friday evening. The team has really started to find some form with their combinations and were victorious in a tough 7-6 score line.
Netball
On Wednesday 12 March our newly selected Yr 5A Netball team and our Firsts VII team participated in a Netball training session with Megan Anderson. This session was predominately used as a professional development opportunity for all of our coaches across the Junior and Secondary School, and our Yr 5 and Firsts teams were asked to attend as our player demonstrators.
Megan is currently the Netball Coaching Director at NSNA as well as a former Australian player, former Swifts coach, former Australian Fast 5 coach and is still a specialist coach for the Diamonds.
Megan offered invaluable instructions and knowledge in the fundamental skill aspect of Netball including footwork, basic defence position, attacking drives and passing. Megan tailored her sessions to suit the age group and demonstrate the different coaching methods and techniques used for players of different ages and abilities. Megan imparted this knowledge on to all of our coaches so that they can better assist their team in improving throughout the season. All of our Netball players involved thoroughly enjoyed themselves and learnt a lot from Megan to kickstart their Netball season.
Thank you to all of the Yr 5A players who attended the session to help our coaches, improving their knowledge and coaching methods: Julia Cooper-Hor, Kira Delaney, Milayna Guha, Chloe Hitchens, Mia Kwintner, Lexi Rowe, Zoe Twining and Ellie Yates and our Firsts, Olivia Donoghue, Maddy Hampton-Vickers, Sarah Kinghorn, Phoebe Rathbone, Allegra Richardson, Taylor Robinson, Lulu Simpson, Emma Sutton and Ashlee Wilks.
Please see below for optional Netball activities over the next few weeks and in the upcoming April holidays:
Red Robin Umpire Clinic – NSNA 23 or 24 March
This Clinic is held by NSNA for New Umpires from Yrs 7 – 9 (must be 12 years as of 31/12/2019.) Umpiring is a great skill to have and can also hugely benefit the player in the skills and game awareness. Any players who are doing Duke of Edinburgh should consider doing umpiring as their New Skill as well as any other player who has an interest in the more technical aspects of the Sport.
Any players who completes the Red Robin Umpire Clinic, as well as the online Theory Examination, will be given plenty of opportunity to practise their umpiring on Friday nights with the Junior School games or Saturday mornings with the Secondary School games. All student umpires will be paired with a qualified Umpire mentor to help them develop their confidence and umpiring skills.
If your daughter is interested in taking the first step to becoming an umpire, please register her through the NSNA website for either the Saturday afternoon (23/3/19) or Sunday afternoon 1.00pm – 4.00pm (24/3/19). Session will be held at Bicentennial Reserve Netball courts, Willoughby.
If your daughter completes the course and the Online Theory exam, please ask her to see Mr Ellis in the Sports Office to discuss umpiring opportunities for the season. Players can umpire before and after their Saturday games or on Friday nights for Redlands.
Yrs 7 – 12 Holidays Training – Open to all Players in Yrs 7 – 12
In Week 1 of the April holidays, we will be offering Netball training to develop individual skills and game awareness on Monday 15, Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 April from 8.00 – 10.00am in Dunnet Hall.
These sessions will offer coaching in specialist positions including defence, centre court and shooting as well as fitness and agility. Players need to register for these training sessions by Friday 29 March so that player to coach ratios can be organised.
Please see this link to the Holiday Training registrations – if your daughter(s) would like to attend please register her no later than Friday 29 March.
A friendly reminder that the first round of the NSNA games will be held on 6 April and Round 2 will be held on the first Saturday of the April holidays, 13 April. Please organise any holiday departures to leave after your daughter’s Netball match on Saturday 13 April.
