What Has Been Happening in the Junior Music Classroom This Term?

Meet Music Tutor – Mr Nick Russoniello

Mr Nick Russoniello, one of Australia’s most dynamic young artists, enjoys an exciting and varied performance career both in Australia and abroad. Nick has been the recipient of a number of major awards including the 2011 ABC Symphony Australia Young Performer of the Year and the 2013 Fine Music Kruger Scholarship. Nick has appeared as a soloist with the Adelaide, Queensland, Melbourne, Sydney Symphony Orchestras and The Metropolitan Orchestra.

Alongside his performance achievements, Nick’s original compositions for saxophone have been performed by saxophonists around the world. In 2019 Nick premiered his new compositions with The Golden Age Quartet, appearing as a soloist with the Fellows of The Sydney Symphony Orchestra and presenting his music at the Royal College of Music, London.

As part of the Yrs 4 and 5 Music Instrumental Program learning experiences this week, Mr Russoniello spoke with the students about the woodwind instrument family. He introduced the children to different reeds and mouthpieces used across various woodwind instruments and introduced students to the saxophone family, the Soprano, Alto, Tenor and the Baritone. Various sounds were explored on these saxophones, from traditional playing techniques to contemporary sounds such as beatboxing, multiphonics and slap tongue. Mr Russoniello finished his presentation by performing one of his own compositions titled Down On The Corner which was inspired by hip-hop dance style and rap, which included a loop station as part of this performance.

Thinking Routines in the Kindergarten Classroom

In Music lesson this term, Kindergarten students have discovered similarities and differences between two known songs, Bye-Lo and Seesaw. All classes used a Same and Different Thinking Routine to explore the songs, with responses being recorded on the poster in the Prep Music Room. Students used wonderful musical language including beat, rhythm, so and mi to describe the music.
