Two Latin students from the Class of 2018, Liam Woolsey and John Economides (Dux of IB), volunteered last week to help Latin students of all Year Groups mark the Ides of March, the anniversary of Julius Caesar’s assassination. Their visit was a suggestion from the boys themselves and reflects the enthusiasm and generous collegiality of our Latin student community. John and Liam taught lessons on Latin love poetry using the SmartPanel to point out grammar, context and rhetorical techniques. They answered students’ questions on university life and shared their study tips with Yrs 11 and 12. All Year Groups gathered along with Languages Coordinator, John Holden, for a party at lunchtime with food, games and some spontaneous, competitive grammar table reciting. Students were also able to each take home a donated antique Latin book. These copies of Caesar, Ovid, Horace and Virgil date from 1890 to 1960, many annotated with the cursive handwriting of previous generations of Latin students. It was heartwarming to see the excitement of our junior Latin students enjoying these artefacts and attempting to translate very advanced Latin.
