Cross Country
It’s a long way to Orange and our Redlands team took the adventure in their stride last Thursday. Redlands best endurance runners took on 15 other HICES schools in a beautiful rural autumn setting at Orange Anglican Grammar School.
Our runners performed really well against a tough field and there we some really determined performances. Daniel and Jeffrey Benoleil ran in 2nd and 3rd place in the 10 Boys division, Landon Mansell 5th in 11 Boys and Krishna Gupta 10th in 12 Boys. They have all qualified to represent HICES at the NSWCIS Championships next month. Our team finished in 5th place in 1st Division overall in a blanket team finish. There were only 160 points difference between 1st place and 6th place in Division 1, so just a couple of higher placings and things could have turned around dramatically.
Charles Hargrave stood out with his wonderful show of sportsmanship, waiting at the finish line to shake the hand and congratulate every single of the 80 finishers in his 11 Boys race. Charles sets the standard for great sportsmanship.
Lachlan Carmichael, State Champion
Lachlan Carmichael is now a State Champion. His CISAFL team never headed into the NSWPSSA Championships going through the tournament undefeated having only four goals scored against them the entire tournament. Lachlan joins Oliver Garrett, Isaac Brooks and Gianmarco Pradel as NSWAFL Champions with CIS in what has been a significant turnaround in recent years. Previously Riverina and Mackillop regions held a 20 year stranglehold on PSSA AFL.
Lachlan played in every match, was rotated through midfield and the forward line, bobbing up to kick goals in every game and showing silky smooth skills and determined running. Lachlan was potentially a victim of the strength and dominance of his team, only narrowly missing NSW selection after what many observers noted as a dominant individual performance.
IPSHA Football
Only through my forgetfulness did Thomas Dewar miss out on a mention last week, despite nailing two spectacular goals in the match against Coogee. His two strikes were with pinpoint accuracy and serious power, I look forward to seeing more of the same.

Yr 3 Blue enjoyed the wider expanses of Queens Park last week and, despite creating a dozen great scoring chances, couldn’t nail the goal and went down 1-0 in a fantastic quality match.
Our Yr 5 teams are enjoying a run of Redlands Oval fixtures.
Our 6A team went down 2-1, but having the better of the play could have been five up at half time! 6 B and C teams both scrambled to have strong wins against well matched Sydney Grammar opposition. A particular thank you to the parents who jumped in and helped out when our Coach suffered a car breakdown on the way to the match last week. Much appreciated.
AFL
Girls AFL will be available for students from Yrs 5 and 6 during Term 3. As a trial sport, we’ll work really hard and be super adaptable to try and have as many players involved as possible. Girls interested in playing AFL matches on Saturday mornings in Term 3 should sign up in the Sports Office ASAP. Girls looking to make a head start on their skills for Term 3 are welcome to join the Friday morning skills sessions before school on the Oval.
Netball
Wednesday morning Netball sessions are run by Leonie Stewart. Leonie is something of a coaching guru and her weekly Wednesday before school clinics are well worth it! Leonie is keen to pack as much time into the sessions as possible and her and the coaches will be starting their Wednesday session at 7.00am in Dunnet Hall NOT 7.15am. Please arrive at 7.00am to make the most of this wonderful opportunity to work with an iconic Netball coach.
Winter Before School Training Schedule
For all trainings on the Junior School Oval, please use your own discretion in extreme rain and weather situations. Often parents and students will have left home to attend before we can make a realistic judgement on the weather. If there is no danger of lightning, nor heavy rain which would soak anyone training outdoors, our aim is to go ahead and run the session. Coaches and/or staff will be in attendance. It’s not always possible to find an alternative training venue, but students will be supervised until school begins in this circumstance.
