Sports Captains Up and Away
Stella Simpson Morgan and Lachlan Carmichael are both living up to their Sports Captain status this week representing NSWCIS at NSWPSSA Championships in Tennis and Boys Basketball respectively. Stella is representing in Inverell and Lachlan in Maitland. I look forward to bringing everyone news of their endeavours next week. In sad, but true news, both Stella and Lachie were disappointed to miss this weeks Cross Country Carnival and on prior form, were both a great chance to make the Redlands Cross Country team, but student athletes can’t always do everything on offer!
IPSHA Football (Soccer)
What a wonderful week it has been for Junior School Football. Whilst many other matches were rained off last weekend, our Yrs 3, 4 and 5 teams all enjoyed dry feet and the true bounce off the Junior Campus Oval even after Friday’s heavy rain.
After our Yr 3 teams set the tone for the day with some amazing play, well beyond their years Matthew McLellan (Yr 5) showed off his bravery and skill, pulling off a series of heart stopping saves in goal before trying his hand up front and nailing the go ahead goal in the first Yr 5 match. Max Taylor shone with two follow up goals.
Our Yr 6 teams ventured to Trinity and our B team fought hard for a well earned draw. The C team dominating and winning 6-1.
This weeks matches are all as per the original draw. Match times to be confirmed from that draw are:
5C – 8.00am at University Oval, Macquarie University Playing Fields, cnr Talavera and Culloden Roads, North Ryde
5B – 8.45am University Oval, Macquarie University Playing Fields, cnr Talavera and Culloden Roads, North Ryde
5A – 9.30am University Oval, Macquarie University Playing Fields, cnr Talavera and Culloden Roads, North Ryde
Our Yrs 5 and 6 teams are both fairly tight on playing numbers, partly a deliberate strategy to increase meaningful playing time and partly forced by the number of players we have. It’s really important to us that we don’t have players standing on the sidelines waiting for game time and I’d rather see players supporting teammates by turning up early and having an extra game before their scheduled match or sticking around to play a later match. Coaches will be asking for players to help – if you’re available it’ll be guaranteed extra playing time.
Rugby Sevens
Great wins from both teams set the season off on the right foot and there was some real excitement from coaches and spectators about the team play and commitment, especially from our younger lads. Matches for this week have been emailed to players.
Yrs 3/4: 8.20 vs Newington Field 4 then 8.40am vs Coogee Field 1
Yrs 5/6: 10.00am vs Coogee Field 4 then 10.20am vs St Pats Field 6. All matches are at Koola Park.
Rugby skills training will be on the Junior Campus Oval Friday from 7.15am.
IPSHA Hockey
Our Hockey girls (pictured at top) began their season last Saturday with a tough match and a narrow loss. The defensive effort by the team was fantastic and the team camaraderie was exceptional. Hockey at Redlands is in great hands with this bunch of committed and talented Hockey crazy kids coming through! The draw and team roster and details have been sent to all registered players.
AFL
Our AFL Boys went within a whisker of spoiling Barker’s first AFL home match on their main college Oval and showed some real commitment to their footy. In a seesawing match which twisted and turned until the last few minutes, first gamers Alex Ramsay and Flynn Evans Beard showed great endeavors whilst Captain Lachlan Carmichael nearly stole the show with late goals. Passion around Redlands and AFL Football is no more apparent than in our team coach Nic Hurrell, Redlander and current North Shore Bomber Premier Division player, who phones in to me after each quarter with an energetic and colourful explanation of the quarter’s play, before letting me listen from afar to his coach’s address to the team. I’d love some action shots from the AFL boys.
The draw for the AFL season is available on Redlands Pulse and has been emailed to players. AFL training will be on the Junior Campus Oval starting this Friday from 7.15am and is open to all interested in AFL Football.
Netball
There was a great turnout of nearly 50 students to training this Wednesday morning. Thank you for attending. Leonie Stewart is something of a coaching guru and her weekly Wednesday before school clinics are well worth it! Leonie is keen to pack as much time into the sessions as possible and her and the coaches will be starting their Wednesday session at 7.00am in Dunnet Hall NOT 7.15am. Please arrive at 7.00am to make the most of this wonderful opportunity to work with an iconic Netball coach.
Rain hampered Friday night Netball this week. Please remember the NSNA website gives the most up to the minute info regarding court status and is the best resource for competition info. Mrs Ellis filters information from the NSNA out as quickly as is possible, but the source may give more immediate information.
Winter Before School Training Schedule
For all trainings on the Junior Campus Oval, please use your own discretion in extreme rain and weather situations. Often parents and students will have left home to attend before we can make a realistic judgement on the weather. If there is no danger of lightning, nor heavy rain which would soak anyone training outdoors, our aim is to go ahead and run the session. Coaches and/or staff will be in attendance. It’s not always possible we can find an alternative training venue, but students will be supervised until school begins in this circumstance.
