Year 5 Interschool STEM Challenge Day

At the very end of last term, STEM fever was high as an excited team of Yr 5 Redlands students attended an Interschool STEM Team Challenge Day at Loreto Kirribilli, with our eLearning Coordinator Ms Anagnostu. Our students worked in mixed school teams with students from Loreto and St Aloysius under tight time deadlines to create, test and present solutions to STEM-related challenges with Drones and Spheros. With a short time to meet their team mates, build rapport and work out a strategy, students utilised computational and design thinking, creative problem solving and most importantly drew on their communication and collaboration skill sets. Students completed a Drone flying and coding challenge, as well as designing and building a Sphero maze game challenge with Kinazium. Congratulations to our team of Yolanda Bai, Owen Beck, Tara Clarke, Elsa Griffiths, Jenna Forrest, Sasha Gordon, Henry Hughes, Feargal Lambert, Ekam Sethi, Daisy Nassar and Bear Whitelaw, who proudly represented Redlands.

Important Campus Access Notice: Murdoch Street Gate

With a safety lens around the Murdoch Street access to the Junior Campus, the usage of the Murdoch Street pedestrian gate has been recently reviewed with the aim of ensuring greater student safety and campus security.

In response to this review, the following changes to usage of the Murdoch Street pedestrian gate are being trialled for the remainder of Term 4 from today:

Monday – Friday (Term time only)

6.00 am

Gate opened for student arrival access

9.00 am

Gate closed for the school day

2.30 pm

Gate opened for student collection and departure

4.00 pm

Gate closed for the day

Saturday & Sunday

Gate closed all day

School holidays

A gate closer has been installed to ensure that the gate cannot be accidentally left open during the day and there is a sign in place advising our community that when the gate is closed, access to the Junior Campus is via the Junior School or Prep Receptions on Allister Street. A reminder too that all visitors must sign in at Junior or Prep Receptions when entering the campus for an extended period of time (not for drop off or collection).

Surf Education

Next week sees the commencement of our annual Surf Education program for all students in Yrs 3-6, again utilising the expertise of Surf Life Saving School Australia and their qualified team of SLSSA instructors. The two-session program for each year group at Freshwater Beach will focus on fitness, beach games, surfboard skills, surf safety, ocean conditions, rips, tides, currents and the overall education on the dangers of swimming and surfing in the ocean. The older students will also be instructed in basic board and swimming rescue.

A reminder below of the dates and further detailed information was sent last term and permission requested. The letter is also on Pulse for reference.
