Cybersafety Education

In the last week, Junior School students, staff and parents have been involved in current Cybersafety education sessions with our partners, ySafe and the feedback from ySafe and stakeholders involved continues to be very positive.

Our longstanding connection with ySafe, industry leaders in this important ever-changing landscape, has allowed us to continue to review and refine the educational experiences for our students, in particular, to ensure that these sessions are both relevant and impactful.

Redlands is one of the first schools in Australia to participate in some of these latest sessions and our staff and students’ feedback was also extremely valuable in further shaping programs to provide powerful learning experiences for other students across Australia.

As I mentioned in the parent session, I also encourage every parent to explore Redlands Cybersafety Hub which was set up last year with ySafe and is a treasure-trove of valuable information. I can assure you that you will not be disappointed.

Yr 6 Excursion to Chinatown

Yr 6 went on an excursion on Monday to Chinatown because we are studying Asian Countries for our Units of Inquiry. When we arrived at Darling Harbour, we were greeted by our tour guides. My group went to the Chinese Gardens of Friendship which is a very sacred, quiet and spiritual place. Each turn was like a maze and it had no windows because they wanted to keep all the bad spirits out and the good spirits in. Next, we headed to Chinatown, which felt a bit deserted because of Covid. We walked through the streets and smelt the delicious food. The ranger told us to count all the dragons that we could see and if we got the correct number then we would have a prize (no one got close – there were over 200!). We then went to the old trading hall to see the ghost of Mr Wong, a person who worked there but died because he fell down the elevator shaft. It’s believed that he is real and touches to warn you about the elevator shaft. After we had lunch then we made dragons for dragon dancing which was really fun. Overall, this trip was really fun and interesting. I learnt a lot of new things and this excursion has just earned the spot of one of my best excursions ever.

On Monday, Yr Six went on an amazing excursion to the Chinese Friendship Gardens, located in Sydney City. We learned about the importance of Chinese culture, linking back to Yr Six’s studies on Asian countries. It was an informative trip, filled with lots of fun and learning. The Chinese Friendship Gardens were isolated from the rest of the city, encapsulating within it the true beauty and nature of the gardens. It is a place to truly relax and listen to the serene sounds of rivers rushing and giant koi fish jumping. The whole experience made everyone feel at ease from the rest of the world, and it was the time we needed and thoroughly enjoyed. Chinatown was extremely exciting to see, as many students had never been previously. It seemed that there were ceremonious dragon heads everywhere, maybe because there were 263, to be exact. All of the classes loved trying to point out all of the hidden dragons, aiming to find them all. The street’s decoration transported us to China, it felt that real. In a nutshell, Yr Six had the time of our lives in their recent excursion the Chinatown and the Friendship Gardens. The rangers that were partnered with Redlands told us many wonderful facts, and the Redlands staff made the trip so easy. In closing, the adventure was a magical occurrence that I was so honoured to be a part of.
