Debating

Well done to the FED 8B team and the ISDA Yr 10 team who won their Semi and Octo debates respectively.

Thank you very much to all the ISDA debaters who hosted the Octos last Friday. A special thank you to senior volunteers Geena Grant, Lili Price and Kaitlyn Jay who manned the reception desk. Lauren Zhang and Sophia Maxwell from Yr 8 went above and beyond what was required of them and chaired an additional senior debate and deserve special mention.

This week FED 8B and FED Yr 9 will debate in Semi Final 2 at MLC. The bus will leave at 3.45pm with Mr Colyer accompanying the students. Parents have been emailed details of the venue.

Redlands is hosting the FED Grand Final on Friday 1 June (next week). All FED debaters are expected to attend this day regardless of whether their team makes it that far. Students will be expected to watch/participate in the Grand Final debates and also help with setting up rooms, chairing, time keeping and helping visitors find their way around the school. Gala Arts participants are excused from this commitment. Only teams who will be debating will have a coaching session on the evening. Students will be emailed sign-in and sign-out times.

Another Mock Trial Win

Redlands had a narrow victory in Round 3 of the NSW Law Society Mock Trial competition on Monday. The team were acting as the defence in a criminal case of ‘Persons unlawfully in possession of property’, where the defendant (Isabel Binnekamp) was accused of knowingly using stolen items of clothing from one of her neighbours. The other witness in our case was the defendant’s other neighbour (Mackenzie Lofts) who believed that the defendant would never knowingly use stolen items. The Court Officer assisting the Magistrate was Perri Carmichael, and the barristers, Lindsay McNeil and Lachlan van der Pluijm, were instructed by their solicitor, Chloe Woodward. The next round will be an interesting civil trial regarding negligence.
