Coppélia

Giuseppina Bozzacchi as Swanilda in Saint-Leon/Delibes (Paris 1870)

Former student Lia Pipolo as Coppélia (2014)

This year’s End of Year Ballet will be Coppélia: The Girl with the Porcelain Eyes – created by French choreographer Arthur Saint-Léon and based on the story by E.T.A Hoffmann.

It marries ballet and storytelling to create one of the greatest comic ballets and best-loved classical works in the ballet repertory.

Set in Germany, it tells the story of Swanilda and her fiancée, a young man called Franz, who falls in love with Dr Coppélius’ clockwork doll called Coppélia. Swanilda disguises herself as the doll and fools Dr Coppélius into believing Coppélia has come alive.

Coppélia is remarkable for its perennial appeal, incorporating elements of both Romanticism and Classicism to create a production spectacle, embodying romance, magic and the celebration of life.
