BurnBright Youth Mental Health Forum – Student Reflection

On Tuesday 5 November, Hunter Auld, Andrew Butler, Anna Ivanovic, Sophia Justice, Ross Psaroulis and Lauren Wong were given the opportunity to attend the BurnBright Youth Mental Health Forum. This event featured perspectives from the North Shore Member of Parliament – Felicity Wilson, as well as a panel of speakers in the youth space including Psychologists Mitch Wallis and Elizabeth Goh, Dr Suzy Green and Motivational Speaker, Matt Purcell. The speakers provided an insight into the many dimensions of youth mental health.

The day began with Mitch Wallis and Elizabeth Goh who shared their personal experiences with mental health issues and other stories, as well as providing strategies which young people could implement in their daily lives such as mindfulness, active listening and proactivity. One of the most profound takeaways was our role in helping others deal with their own internal struggles. Mitch Wallis placed particular emphasis on listening and letting people be heard instead of providing advice and suggestions. His perspective was to ask questions and empathise instead of proposing solutions.

During the last session of the day, students engaged in group sessions which involved each school group putting together a pitch/proposal for an activity to be implemented within their school. The Redlands group created a Peer Support proposal/initiative called The Movement for Mental Health Program which aimed to make students proactive when approaching Youth Mental Health issues. The program launch may consist of a mufti day which could occur during Term 1, 2020, with funds raised going to Headspace, as well as a once a week Pastoral activity undertaken by all Tutor Groups from all Year Groups, involving an anonymous Peak and Pit exercise which would involve students anonymously recording their highs and lows in a journal or on sticky notes which could then be discussed in small groups. By engaging in such initiatives, hopefully any stigma surrounding youth mental health might be removed and students would be encouraged to discuss their social and emotional problems.

A big thankyou to Ms Matthews and Mr Walker for giving us this opportunity.
