Snowsports Omission

We apologise for an omission in the Snowsports results at the Cocurricular assembly held last week. We would like to formally congratulate the following students who placed 3rd in the Div 2 Snowboard (Alpine) at the Australian Interschool’s Snowsports Championships in Mt Buller: Callie Forest, Lucy Roberts and Mia Kloiser-Jones. A fantastic achievement by this team of students.

Athletics

The Redlands Track and Field team had a successful meet at the competitive CIS Athletics Carnival on Tuesday at SOPAC. Below are some highlights from the meet:

  • Special mention to Alex York who placed 1st in the 16 years Long Jump (5.50m) and 3rd in the 200m (26.12) and 2nd in the High Jump (1.55m). Alex unfortunately tore her hammy in the 100m, 10m into the race so she was unable to complete her High Jump. Unfortunately she will not be able to compete at the NSW All Schools this weekend.
  • Our Senior Boys Yr 12 Relay team (Wilf McKie, Ellis Teudt, Cameron Pascoe, Antonio Bonandi Penna Coelho) won their final in 44.41 – a second quicker than what they ran at the ISA.
  • Jonah Koppers had another nail biting race to finish in 1st place in the 800m (2:05). Jonah snatched the win in the last 3m of the race!
  • Henry Charles placed 3rd in the Javelin, throwing 34.23 m which was a fantastic effort considering Henry only took up Javelin at the beginning of the season.
  • Harry Knight finished in 2nd place (18.88s) in the 100m Hurdles.

Full individual results and who is competing at the NSW All Schools this week at SOPAC can be found on Redlands Pulse

Basketball

Congratulations to our teams who played against St Andrew’s Cathedral School last Saturday. The day started with our 1sts Girls, and despite not having played together yet, the team showed great cohesion. The game ended in a massive win over the SACS 1sts Girls. The 1sts Boys were up next, with the game being a close contest in the first half. Starting the second half the boys gained a steady lead for the remainder of the game. The 15A Boys showed that they are a very talented team, dominating the game at both ends of the floor and coming away with an easy win. Our 14A boys were undermanned for their first game but despite losing the match to a very strong SACS side, they have shown some great signs for the upcoming season. The 13A boys are showing the future of Redlands Basketball is very bright, with some spectacular team work and exciting passages of play, it was great to watch. A successful day, showing it should be a very exciting season for Redlands Basketball.

We will be offering a Basketball skills session in the holidays on Tuesday 8 October in Dunnet Hall. Please click here to register:

Rowing

Last weekend saw our Friends of Rowing host the 2019-2020 Season Launch BBQ and Boat Naming Ceremony, where our program was able to acknowledge some key individuals who have played significant roles within our program through the naming of two new single sculls and new coxed quad after our outgoing 2018-2019 Rowing Captains and the School’s Principal, Dr Peter Lennox.

Zoe Kimber Yr 12 (Single Scull): Zoe first joined the Rowing program as a Yr 8 student late in 2015, however she did not return the following season. Looking for something to challenge herself again, she returned as a senior student in late 2017 where she climbed the ranks to be selected in the Senior Girls 1st boat in the final crew selections that season, winning a Bronze medal at the 2018 NSW State Championships. The following season, Zoe was elected by her peers to be the 2018-2019 Girls Captain of Boats.

Alec Price Yr 12 (Single Scull): Alec has been part of the Rowing program since he took part in the Yr 6 Learn to Row in the Junior School. Always one to push himself to his limits, Alec was selected into the 1st crew at every year level throughout his five seasons within the Rowing program on the Senior Campus. His most notable result was a bronze medal at the 2018 Australian Rowing Championships as part of the Senior Boys 1st Quad. The following season Alec was elected by his peers to be the 2018-2019 Boys Captain of Boats.

Dr Peter Lennox (Coxed Quad): An educator for 42 years, serving as Principal for 28 years, 12 of which as Principal here at Redlands, Dr Lennox and his leadership need no introduction. In 2007 when the Redlands Rowing facility, shared with University of NSW, was burnt to the ground in an arson attack, Dr Lennox played a key role in securing a new home for Redlands Rowing at Mosman Rowing Club, thus ensuring the programs future.

A huge thank you to the Friends of Rowing and the large number of volunteers who helped put on this event.

Next week we move into the optional school holiday training sessions. Families are asked to grant permission via Redlands Pulse for the individual sessions that each student is planning to attend. The goal of these sessions for our Juniors is to improve their skills to a point where we can quickly transition from learning to row into actually training for the first regatta of the season. For our Seniors it is about making sure there is continuity with their training loads, ensuring that they are far more resilient to injury and can withstand greater training loads throughout the season.

Lastly, a reminder that training schedules, regatta dates and other key info are all available on Redlands Pulse, particularly so within the Preliminary Information documents.
