Service and Social Engagement
Mother’s Day Classic
This weekend will see the running/walking of the Mother’s Day Classic. As of today, we have a very credible 117 registered Redlands participants. There is still time to register here. You will need to complete the registration process nearly all the way to the payment stage before you can select to join the Redlands team (password = Shine).
Don’t forget to purchase your Redlands pink caps and a pink Team Redlands supporter tshirt from the Uniform Shop, all profits going to the MDC.
The RPFA will have a tent at the Start/Finish area in the Domain for you to congregate and leave valuables while you participate. We look forward to seeing you there.
Engaging with our Environment
This week we had the good fortune of hosting a talk from a team of marine scientists, passionate researchers and communicators sharing with us some of their work from research expeditions to Antarctica. The team, including Dr Jimmy White, Expedition Leader for National Geographic Expeditions along with Paul North, the International Outreach Director for the educational non-profit Meet the Ocean and his team. They talked with students and teachers about the future opportunities for our students to apply what they are learning in a wide range of subjects in order to make a positive contribution to redressing the environment impacts from climate change. Students had an opportunity to ask first hand about how these scientists careers had evolved and were impressed by the very different pathway they had followed.
Social Engagement and Service Trips
There are opportunities coming up this term for students to actively engage with social issues and make a service contribution. Our students travelling to Peru are now in the final stages of their preparations. They will be having meetings to finalise their packing and last minute organisation in the coming weeks and we are looking forward to hearing about what they have seen and learnt on their return.
Our Yr 9 students are in the early stages of their learning and planning for their trip to Fiji. This week they met to discuss their fundraising plans and reflect on the history of Fiji.
Similarly, this week also saw the second meeting of the Yr 11 students preparing for their end of year trip to Cambodia. They were also focused on exploring the complex history of Cambodia, both ancient and modern, in preparation for seeing how it has shaped the country they will visit.
