HICES Swimming Carnival

Our Redlands team took on the best of HICES in the pool last Wednesday and showed what a great fighting spirit our Swimming team has. Despite being newly upgraded to the highest division in HICES Swimming, our team members weren’t overawed and showed real tenacity and the joy of representing Redlands to finish a very credible fifth overall in Div 1. So many of our swimmers swam PBs, a great many in their first Redlands Swimming team. Luka Gordon and Lachlan Svensson led the way, swimming big programs and showing great resolve to place across the whole range of their events.

NSWCIS Red Award

2018 Sports Captain Jasmine Black was awarded with the coveted Red Award from NSWCIS. Reds are awarded to primary students who perform at an exceptional level at the SSA Championships (School Sport Australia) and there are generally only two of these prestigious awards presented per gender per sport in any year to students.

These were the words from the presenter to Jasmine in describing her recognition for the award:

At 2018 CIS Trails Jasmine stood out as capable and confident in goals –  making her an easy selection to the team. After a year’s experience, it was clear that Jasmine was a natural leader in this team. She was barking out instructions, encouraging her teammates and promoting solid play from the goal box.

At the PSSA Championships, Jasmine’s skill as a keeper was put to the test and she made some great saves throughout the tournament which kept the CIS team in the game. She displayed a cool, calm and collected nature as she played the ball forward and Jasmine was an amazing asset to the CIS team, a fact that did not escape the NSW PSSA selectors.

At the School Sport Australia Championships, Jasmine continued to perform well, capable of both reading and redirecting play from the goal and her ability to remain clear headed and calm as the last line of defence is impressive for someone so young. Jasmine took all advice on board and was always willing to learn and she only conceded three goals during the six day National Tournament, assisting her team to the silver medal. With glowing reports from the CIS and PSSA levels, there were indications that Jasmine has a future career in Football if she wishes to pursue it.

Serious praise from some elite level coaches for one of our great athletes of 2018.

IPSHA Sports

IPSHA matches continue this weekend. All matches, times and venues are as per the original draw.

Basketball

Yrs 5 and 6 basketballers continued their winning ways last week and even with a bye drawn for our A and B teams, the scrimmage match between the two squads was electric. Players very maturely self elected even teams on paper and played a really high level match under exact match conditions in Dunnet Hall to a nail-biting finish. Just three points in the final result, it could have gone either way and was indeed a great spectacle. Our C, D, E and F teams all had emphatic victories over St Aloysius and Sydney Grammar Edgecliff teams. The Redlands Junior School Basketball juggernaut rolls on.

Redlands Inaugural Sports Luncheon

Don’t forget to book a ticket for Redlands Inaugural Sports Luncheon, an event not to be missed on the Redlands calendar! The Luncheon will provide a great opportunity to celebrate the integral value of sport to the Redlands community and its students of the past, present and future. Sports education enables students to develop skills and behaviours that are essential for their future journey. The list of guests features  a range of Redlands greatest athletes including Karyn Gojnich (Davis), Class of 1978 (Olympic Sailor, Redlander and Redlands mother), Janusz Hooker, Class of 1987 (Olympic Rower), Lachlan Mackay, Class of 2000 (Rugby Wallaby and Brumby) and Holly Crawford, Class of 2001 (Olympic Snowboarder).

Winter Sport

Thanks to everyone for nominating their Winter Sports. Summer Sport still continues for a further two weeks. Winter Sport selections begin on 27 March.

Netball

Preliminary team information has been emailed to Netball players this week. We are still waiting on the final draw and may not have that until 27 March, with matches scheduled to start on 5 April.

Our Yr 4 teams will have a grading evening on 15 March from 4.30 -6.30pm, where they’ll play a series of brief modified games to give organisers an idea for grading.

NetSetGo and 10-12 yrs players are invited by NSNA to attend a clinic run by Premier League franchise North Shore United.

Equestrian

Ruby Holgate from Yr 6 will swap her basketball shoes for riding boots this weekend after being accepted as an entrant into the NSW Interschool Equestrian Competition. Ruby (pictured here in training) will compete in the EVA 60 Eventing, comprising Dressage, Show Jumping and Cross Country. Her nomination was accepted after fantastic results in the lead up competitions. I can’t wait to see more shots and hear further news.
