‘Connect and Grow’ Prep Camp Activities Week

13–17 September

We are very excited to be launching our inaugural Prep ‘Connect and Grow’ Camp activities week. The timetable of planned events are listed below and this year we are thrilled to have our Yrs 1 and 2 cohorts included in the Redlands OEG program. Hopefully all Yrs 1 and 2 families have received the medical form from OEG and read the details within.

Kindergarten permission forms will be sent at the end of this week.

Throughout the week the children will be participating in a camp day/days, indigenous focus activities and rotational grade activities that all involve fun activities with a theme of connection and relationship building.

The students will be asked closer to the dates to bring certain ‘camping’ items in to use in their activities. These will include a sleeping bag, a stuffed toy and a special game they like to play. PE uniforms will be worn on grade camp days. For the other days students will have the option of wearing mufti or their PE uniforms. A hat will need to be worn each day.

Any after school activities will still take place and drop off and pick up times will also remain unchanged.

Lunch orders won’t be available on your child’s camp day but will be available throughout the rest of the week.

A further detailed letter outlining specifics of what to bring on certain days will come from your class teachers next week. As each of the camp days are run by OEG and their staff along with our own Redlands teachers present as supervisors, we do not require any additional parent helpers.

We hope you are just as excited as we are for week.

Book Week

A message from Mrs Roberts

Book Week 2022 ended on a high note on Tuesday with a visit from author Kate Simpson. Kate is an engineer who likes to include science concepts in her picture books, which provided a good follow on from our STEAM week. She spoke to the students about her book Ouch! which is a book focuses on gravity and forces. The Yr 1 students listened very attentively and had some wonderful questions they wanted answers to, but all grades were respectful, engaged and enthusiastic and they made Kate’s visit very memorable.

Here are some lovely reflections from 1 Blue students after the session with Kate.

She only likes to write not draw. Other people draw for her. Chase Bateman

I learnt that there’s no gravity in outer space. Charlie Chen

I learnt that if you drop a whole bottle full of water and one with a little bit, they land at the same time. Isabel Collet

I learnt how they drink water without gravity. Tom Fletcher

I learnt that the air can hold very light things in it. Gordon Hoang

I learnt that Kate Simpson used to be an engineer. Thor Kazimierczuk

I noticed that the feather fell slower than a heavy bottle. Archie Trautwein

Last week we had a Zoom session with an author illustrator, Andy Geppert who lives in Brisbane. His first book Backyard Birdies is very popular because the students like his sense of humour and the fact that he combines an information book with humorous content. His new book, Backyard Buddies came into the bookshops recently and he talked about this book with the students. He drew pictures that were initiated by ideas from the students and made them laugh.

The dress up parade on Friday for the grandparents also enabled the students to make connections with people they admire or occupations they aspire to. Madame Merlot came as Coco Chanel, Miss Knox as David Attenborough, Miss Angus and Mrs Guha were both Jane Goodall. Miss Cooper excelled as the Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama. What wonderful people for our students to know about!

Most of the biographies are now back in the library so if you were looking for a specific one and couldn’t find them, come into the library again soon. Of course, every week at Redlands is Book Week, as our students have many opportunities to read and be read to and they have a wonderful library full of resources for them, but it always fun to have a book extravaganza for a week!

A big thank you to  Mrs Roberts for all her hard work to make the week such a success.

Redlands Spring Fair Postponed

After close consultation with our partners and suppliers, and with the safety and wellbeing of our community as our highest priority, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the 2022 Spring Fair due to the inclement weather forecast for Saturday.

Thank you to our dedicated and passionate volunteers and staff for your efforts in preparation of the Spring Fair. We are genuinely disappointed that we are unable to host this much loved and highly anticipated community event this Saturday.

We are currently liaising with our partners and suppliers and will be back in touch next week with further and updated details. Should you have any questions in relation to the postponement of the Spring Fair in the interim then please contact us at feedback@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Spring Fair Colouring Competition

Well done to the tens of students who entered in the Spring Fair Colouring Competition. After careful deliberation, the following winners were selected and these students were announced at recess this morning.
