UNSW Girls Do Maths
Last term, a group of students participated in an all-day Girls Do the Maths event to explore careers in STEM and to be introduced to the UNSW campus and possible career paths. The following Yr 10 students participated in the day: Ahnu Guan, Daisy Thomas, Jasmine Black, Jocelyn Wang, Annie Zhang, Heidi Colleran, Scarlett Thorp, Celine Patel and Anneka Steele. See a student reflection of the day below:
The UNSW Girls in Maths day was an eye-opening experience that we had the privilege to enjoy. Being surrounded by so many other inspiring women allowed us to visualize a career in STEM. Throughout the day we were set three completely different problems, and with some help from the new girls we met on our table, we were able to solve these problems; however, our methods of solving these problems were lengthy and unique. After the explanation it was then explained further how all three problems were intertwined and each problem could be used to solve the other. We are grateful to have been seated at a table with four girls from a school in Cronulla as it allowed us to make new friends and share our strengths that all linked to the problems we were given. Another aspect of this day we thoroughly enjoyed was being given a tour around the UNSW campus. This gave us an insight into campus life and the wide variety of classes you can take in relation to your course of study. Overall, we were so lucky to have been given this opportunity and would highly recommend to the younger years.
